Abstract
It has been shown that increased concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) in the soil are harmful to plant growth. However, the sensitivity of different wheat cultivars to nano-ZnO stress is still unclear. To detect the physiological response process of wheat varieties with different tolerance to nano-ZnO stress, four wheat cultivars (viz., cv. TS1, ZM18, JM22, and LM6) with different responses to nano-ZnO stress were selected, depending on previous nano-ZnO stress trials with 120 wheat cultivars in China. The results found that nano-ZnO exposure reduced chlorophyll concentrations and photosynthetic electron transport efficiency, along with the depressed carbohydrate metabolism enzyme activities, and limited plant growth. Meanwhile, the genotypic variation in photosynthetic carbon assimilation under nano-ZnO stress was found in wheat plants. Wheat cv. JM22 and LM6 possessed relatively lower Zn concentrations and higher leaf nitrogen per area, less reductions in their net photosynthetic rate, a maximum quantum yield of the PS II (Fv/Fm), electron transport flux per cross-section (ETo/CSm), trapped energy flux per cross-section (TRo/CSm), and total soluble sugar and sucrose concentrations under nano-ZnO stress, showing a better tolerance to nano-ZnO stress than wheat cv. TS1 and ZM18. In addition, the chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters Fv/Fm, ETo/CSm, and TRo/CSm could be used to rapidly screen wheat varieties resistant to nano-ZnO stress. The results here provide a new approach for solving the issues of crop yield decline in regions polluted by heavy metal nanoparticles and promoting the sustainable utilization of farmland with heavy metal pollution.

Abstract
Biodegradable gelatin (G) food packaging films are in increasing demand as the substitution of petroleum-based preservative materials. However, G packaging films universally suffer from weak hydrophobicity in practical applications. Constructing a hydrophobic micro/nanocoating with low surface energy is an effective countermeasure. However, the poor compatibility with the hydrophilic G substrate often leads to the weak interfacial adhesion and poor durability of the hydrophobic coating. To overcome this obstacle, we used (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) as an interfacial bridging agent to prepare a highly hydrophobic, versatile G nanocomposite film. Specifically, tannic acid (TA)-modified nanohydroxyapatite (n-HA) particles (THA) were introduced in G matrix (G-THA) to improve the mechanical properties. Micro/nanostructure with low surface energy composed of nanozinc oxide (Nano-ZnO)/APS/stearic acid (SA) (NAS) was constructed on the surface of G-THA film (G-THA/NAS) through one-step spray treatment. Consequently, as-prepared G-THA/NAS film presented excellent mechanics (tensile strength: 7.6 MPa, elongation at break: 292.7%), water resistance ability (water contact angle: 150.4°), high UV-shielding (0% transmittance at 200 nm), degradability (100% degradation rate after buried in the natural soil for 15 days), antioxidant (78.8% of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity), and antimicrobial (inhibition zone against Escherichia coli: 15.0 mm and Staphylococcus aureus: 16.5 mm) properties. It should be emphasized that the bridging function of APS significantly improves the interfacial adhesion ability of the NAS coating with more than 95% remaining area after the cross-cut adhesion test. Meanwhile, the G-THA/NAS film could maintain stable and long-lasting hydrophobic surfaces against UV radiation, high temperature, and abrasion. Based on these multifunctional properties, the G-THA/NAS film was successfully applied as a liquid packaging material. To sum up, we provide a feasible and effective method to prepare high-performance green packaging films.

Abstract
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most valuable horticulture crops, consumed in both its raw and processed forms. To increase yield and efficiency, conventional and organic fertilizers are utilized in modern agriculture. Traditional fertilizers increase crop yield but are harmful to the environment. These circumstances motivate the pursuit of an alternate solution. The purpose of this research was to investigate how the application of nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) combined with conventional fertilizer influence tomato plants' development, including the antioxidant potential of cultivated plants. Three factors such as different types of cultivars, dosage of applied nano-ZnO solution and the method of nanoparticles application were implemented. Multiple analysis of selected antioxidants content and their activities such as malondialdehyde (MDA), flavonoids, polyphenols, ascorbic acid, peroxidase (POX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) or catalase (CAT) were analyzed. The obtained data exhibited that all examined parameters were strongly dependent on three implemented factors: concentration of nano-ZnO suspension, the type of cultivated tomato and the method of nanoparticles application. For instance, the accumulation of MDA in cultivated plants was different among plants under nanoparticles treatment, but in one specific case (Malinowy Bossman cultivar treated with 50 mg/L nano-ZnO suspension) the content of this marker was decreased by 34% in comparison to the corresponding control. Nevertheless, the results presented in this study showed that the usage of certain doses of nano-ZnO suspension may increase the antioxidant potential of tomato plants.

Abstract
Nano-ZnO has a large specific surface area, small particle size, and strong polarity and can be used as an additive to modify the base asphalt. In this paper, the compatibility mechanism between nano-ZnO modifier and asphalt is analyzed. Solubility parameters, interaction energNano-ZnO and mean square displacement of nano-ZnO in matrix asphalt were calculated at different temperatures to study the compatibility of the nano-ZnO modifier and the matrix asphalt. The radial distribution functions and radii of gyration of the asphalt's four components under the action of the nano-ZnO additive were calculated to investigate the effect of nano-ZnO on the molecular structure of the asphalt. The results show that the best compatibility between nano-ZnO and matrix asphalt is observed at 150 °C, especially when the nano-ZnO particle size was 6 Å. The particle sizes of nano-ZnO have little effect on the temperature at which the nano-ZnO-modified asphalt achieved its highest structural stability. Around 150 °C, the nano-ZnO-modified asphalt system with different particle sizes exhibit the highest stability and best compatibility. The addition of nano-ZnO improves the compactness of the asphalt structure and makes the asphalt more stable.

Abstract
The effects of dietary supplementation with two particle sizes of nano zinc oxide (ZnO) on growth performance, immune function, intestinal morphology, and the gut microbiome were determined in a 42-day broiler chicken feeding experiment. A total of 75 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were randomized and divided into three groups with five replicates of five chicks each, including the conventional ZnO group (NC), the nano-ZnO group with an average particle size of 82 nm (ZNPL), and the nano-ZnO group with an average particle size of 21 nm (ZNPS). Each group was supplemented with 40 mg/kg of ZnO or nano-ZnO. Our results revealed that birds in the ZNPS group had a higher average daily gain and a lower feed-to-gain ratio than those in the NC group. ZNPS significantly increased the thymus index and spleen index, as well as the levels of serum metallothionein (MT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and lysozyme (LZM). The ZNPS treatments reduced interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels and increased IL-2 and interferon (IFN)-γ levels compared to that in the NC group. Additionally, compared with the birds in the NC group, those in the nano-ZnO group had a higher villus height to crypt depth ratio of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Bacteroides increased in the ZNPS group at the genus level. Further, unidentified_Lachnospiraceae, Blautia, Lachnoclostridium, unidentified_Erysipelotrichaceae, and Intestinimonas were significantly increased in the ZNPL group. In conclusion, nano-ZnO improved the growth performance, promoted the development of immune organs, increased nonspecific immunity, improved the villus height to crypt depth ratio of the small intestine, and enriched the abundance of beneficial bacteria. Notably, the smaller particle size (21 nm) of nano-ZnO exhibited a more potent effect.

Abstract
The agriculture sector faces numerous problems. One of the beforementioned problems relates to the proper crop plants’ fertilization. The conventional bulk fertilizers are becoming less effective and have a negative impact on the environment. Nanomaterials such as zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are widely used in various sectors such as medicine or electronics. Several studies indicate that nano-ZnO may likewise be considered as a potential nanofertilizer. In present research, an attempt was made to study the influence of two different sized ZnO NPs (<50 nm and <100 nm) on the seed germination of chosen tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivars. The seeds of three cherry tomato cultivars were placed on a Petri dish with the NPs suspensions (0, 50, 150, and 250 mg/L) in order to examine the influence on germination parameters at a certain size of NPs and at a chosen concentration. In addition, within this study, we verified that the implicated conditions have the exact impact on all three cultivars. The obtained results indicate that all the factors affect the seed sprouting, however, this process mainly depends on the type of tomato cultivar and the size of the used nanoparticles. The parameter of the germination percentage (GP) was the only of the assumed factors that did not influence it significantly. Nevertheless, the values of other examined parameters such as the MGT, GRI, CVG, or VI depend strongly on all assumed features including the type of chosen cultivar. The obtained results vary significantly between all cultivars which indicates that the plants from the same family may require different conditions for optimal growth. In this research the <50 nm ZnO nanoparticles had more beneficial influence on sprouting parameters then parallelly used <100 nm ZnO nanoparticles.

Abstract
Nanofertilizers effectively deliver the micronutrients besides reducing the phytotoxicity and environmental damage associated with chemical fertilizers. Zinc, an essential micronutrient, is significant for chloroplast development, activation of certain enzymes, and primary metabolism. Nano zinc oxide (ZnO) is the most widely used zinc nanoparticle. Concerns regarding the toxicity of conventional physical and chemical methods of synthesizing the nanoparticles have generated the need for a green approach. It involves the biogenic synthesis of metallic nanoparticles using plants and microorganisms. Microbe-mediated biogenic synthesis of metallic nanoparticles is a bottom-up approach in which the functional biomolecules of microbial supernatant reduce the metal ions into its nanoparticles. This review discusses the biological synthesis of nano-ZnO from microorganisms and related aspects such as the mechanism of synthesis, factors affecting the same, methods of application, along with their role in conferring drought stress tolerance to the plants and challenges involved in their large-scale synthesis and applications.

Abstract
Nano-sized zinc oxide (nano-ZnO) affects lipid deposition, but its absorption patterns and mechanisms affecting lipid metabolism are still unclear. This study was undertaken to investigate the molecular mechanism of nano-ZnO absorption and its effects on lipid metabolism in the intestinal tissues of a widely distributed freshwater teleost yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. We found that 100 mg/kg dietary nano-ZnO (H-Zn group) significantly increased intestinal Zn contents. The zip6 and zip10 mRNA expression levels were higher in the H-Zn group than those in the control (0 mg/kg nano-ZnO), and zip4 mRNA abundances were higher in the control than those in the L-Zn (50 mg/kg nano-ZnO) and H-Zn groups. Eps15, dynamin1, dynamin2, caveolin1, and caveolin2 mRNA expression levels tended to reduce with dietary nano-ZnO addition. Dietary nano-ZnO increased triglyceride (TG) content and the activities of the lipogenic enzymes glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), and isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), upregulated the mRNA abundances of lipogenic genes 6pgd, fatty acid synthase (fas), and sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (srebp1), and reduced the mRNA expression of farnesoid X receptor (fxr) and small heterodimer partner (shp). The SHP protein level in the H-Zn group was lower than that in the control and the L-Zn group markedly. Our in vitro study indicated that the intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) absorbed nano-ZnO via endocytosis, and nano-Zn-induced TG deposition and lipogenesis were partially attributable to the endocytosis of nano-ZnO in IECs. Mechanistically, nano-ZnO-induced TG deposition was closely related to the metal responsive transcription factor 1 (MTF-1)-SHP pathway. Thus, for the first time, we found that the lipogenesis effects of nano-ZnO probably depended on the key gene shp, which is potentially regulated by MTF1 and/or FXR. This novel signaling pathway of MTF-1 through SHP may be relevant to explain the toxic effects and lipotoxicity ascribed to dietary nano-ZnO addition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our living environment is being increasingly polluted by petroleum-based plastics and there is an increasing demand for biodegradable food packaging. In this study, the effect of various ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) treatments (0, 200 and 400 MPa) on the microstructure and thermal, barrier and mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/ZnO nanocomposite films was studied. RESULTS The film-forming solution was processed using UHP technology. The crystallinity, strength and stiffness of the composite film after UHP treatment increased. In addition, barrier property analysis showed that the UHP treatment significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability (WVP) coefficient of the PLA/ZnO nanocomposite film. Furthermore, the WVP value of the film treated at 400 MPa (50 g kg-1 nano-ZnO content) was the lowest and reduced by 47.3% compared with that of pure PLA film. The improvement in these properties might be due to the interaction between nano-ZnO and PLA matrix promoted by UHP treatment. CONCLUSIONS Therefore, the application of UHP technology on the film-forming solution could improve the crystallinity and functional properties of the nanocomposite film, and has great potential in the production of food packaging films with ideal functions. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to overcome drawbacks of the inhomogeneous dispersion and facile agglomeration of nano-ZnO/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) composite hydrogels (nano-ZnO/PNIPAm composite hydrogels) during synthesis and improve the anti-mold property of the nano-ZnO/PNIPAm composite hydrogels. Here, nano-ZnO/PNIPAm composite hydrogels were prepared by the radical polymerization method. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the effects of different dispersants on the particle sizes, dispersions, and phase transition characteristics of the nano-ZnO/PNIPAm composite hydrogels. The anti-mold properties of nano-ZnO/PNIPAm composite hydrogels were studied. Results revealed that the nano-ZnO/PNIPAm composite hydrogel prepared by the addition of nano-ZnO dispersion liquid exhibited the smallest particle size, the most homogeneous dispersion, and the highest stability. The addition of the dispersant did not change the phase transition characteristics of nano-ZnO/PNIPAm, and the nano-ZnO/PNIPAm composite hydrogels (Pf) exhibited good anti-mold properties to the bamboo mold.

Abstract
Because of their applications in large numbers of products, Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) will inevitably enter into the environment. Nano-ZnO released into the environment will be present in a complex matrix which can cause various chemical and physical transformations and modulate the biological reactivity of these particles. Due to their rapid growth and small size, Lemna minor is recommended by OECD for toxicological testing. Here, we tested how nano-ZnO reactivity is modulated by the suite of macro- and micronutrients that are present in Lemna minor growth media. Specifically, we measured ex situ Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) formation by nano-ZnO, and subsequent in planta toxicity. The data show how orthophosphate can modulate both ex situ ROS formation, and in planta toxicity. This has ramifications for phytotoxicity testing, which is commonly performed under controlled conditions and on media containing orthophosphate.

Abstract
To investigate the inhomogeneous distribution of electric fields in insulating equipment and components, five nonlinear-conductance composite materials based on epoxy resin (EP) (nano-SiC/EP, nano-ZnO/EP, micro-ZnO/EP, nano-SiC/ZnO/EP, and nano-micro-SiC/ZnO/EP), were prepared using nano-SiC, nano-ZnO, and micro-ZnO particles as fillers. The mass fractions of the inorganic fillers were 1, 3, and 5 wt%, respectively. The direct current (DC) voltage characteristics of the composites showed that the electrical conductivities and nonlinear coefficients of the composites utilizing single-filler types increased with increasing inorganic filler content. Under the same conditions, the conductivity and nonlinear coefficient of SiC/EP were both larger than those of the nano-ZnO/EP and micro-ZnO/EP. However, the nonlinear coefficient of the composites was significantly affected by the simultaneous addition of the two inorganic fillers, micro-ZnO and nano-SiC. When the content ratio of micro-ZnO to nano-SiC was 2:3, the nonlinear coefficient of the composite reached a maximum value of 3.506, significantly higher than those of the other samples. Compared with the nano-SiC/EP, micro-ZnO/EP and nano-ZnO/EP composites with 5 wt% inorganic filler, the nonlinear coefficient of the two-filler composite was greater by a factor of 0.82, 2.48, and 5.01, respectively.

Abstract
A thin film of polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) has good flexibility and simple preparation process. More importantly, compared with PVDF, its piezoelectric β-phase can be easily formed without mechanical stretching. However, its piezoelectricity is relatively lower. Therefore, at present, PVDF-TrFE is always compounded with other kinds of piezoelectric materials to solve this problem. The effect of nano-ZnO doping amount on the sensing characteristics of the piezoelectric films was studied. PVDF-TrFE/nano-ZnO films with different nano-ZnO contents were prepared by spin coating process and packaged. The dispersion of nano-ZnO dopants and the crystallinity of β-phase in piezoelectric films with different nano-ZnO contents were observed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and the piezoelectric strain constants and dielectric constants were measured, respectively. The effect of different nano-ZnO contents on the output performance of the piezoelectric sensor was obtained by a series of impact experiments. The results show that the piezoelectric strain constant and dielectric constant can be increased by doping nano-ZnO in PVDF-TrFE. Moreover, the doping amount of nano-ZnO in PVDF-TrFE is of great significance for improving the piezoelectric properties of PVDF-TrFE/nano-ZnO thin films. Among the prepared piezoelectric films, the output voltage of PVDF-TrFE/nano-ZnO piezoelectric sensor with 7.5% nano-ZnO doping amount is about 5.5 times that of pure PVDF-TrFE. Thus, the optimal range of the doping amount for nano-ZnO is about 4⁻10%.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) was employed for the preparation of GO-zinc oxide (ZnO). The hydroxyl group on the surface was exploited to trigger the l-lactide ring-opening polymerization. A composite material with poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) chains grafted to the GO-ZnO surface, GO-ZnO-PLLA, was prepared. The results demonstrated that the employed method allowed one-step, rapid grafting of PLLA to the GO-ZnO surface. The chemical structure of the GO surface was altered by improved dispersion of GO-ZnO in organic solvents, thus enhancing the GO-ZnO dispersion in the PLLA matrix and the interface bonding with PLLA. Subsequently, composite films, GO-ZnO-PLLA and GO-ZnO-PLLA/PLLA, were prepared. The changes in interface properties and mechanical properties were studied. Furthermore, the antibacterial performance of nano-ZnO was investigated.

Abstract
A novel nanopackaging film was synthesized by incorporating ZnO nanoparticles into a poly-lactic acid (PLA) matrix, and its effect on the quality of fresh-cut apple during the period of preservation was investigated at 4 ± 1 °C for 14 days. Six wt % cinnamaldehyde was added into the nano-blend film. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed a rougher cross-section of the nano-blend films and an X-ray diffraction (XRD) was carried out to determine the structure of the ZnO nanoparticles. Compared to the pure PLA film, the nano-blend film had a higher water vapor permeability (WVP) and lower oxygen permeability. With the increase of the nanoparticles (NPs) in the PLA, the elongation at break (ε) and elastic modulus (EM) increased, while tensile strength (TS) decreased. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) presented a relatively good thermostability. Most importantly, the physical and biochemical properties of the fresh-cut apple were also measured, such as weight loss, firmness, polyphenol oxidase (PPO), total phenolic content, browning index (BI), sensory quality, and microbiological level. The results indicated that nano-blend packaging films had the highest weight loss at the end of storage compared to the pure PLA film; however, nanopackaging provided a better retention of firmness, total phenolic countent, color, and sensory quality. It also had a remarkable inhibition on the growth of microorganisms. Therefore, Nano-ZnO active packaging could be used to improve the shelf-life of fresh-cut produce.

Abstract
Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and ZnO nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) are widely distributed in the environment. However, the potential toxicity of co-exposure to PFOS and nano-ZnO remains to be fully elucidated. The test investigated the effects of co-exposure to PFOS and nano-ZnO on the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in zebrafish. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to a combination of PFOS (0.2, 0.4, 0.8mg/L) and nano-ZnO (50mg/L) from their early stages of life (0-14days). The whole-body content of TH and the expression of genes and proteins related to the HPT axis were analyzed. The co-exposure decreased the body length and increased the malformation rates compared with exposure to PFOS alone. Co-exposure also increased the triiodothyronine (T3) levels, whereas the thyroxine (T4) content remained unchanged. Compared with the exposure to PFOS alone, exposure to both PFOS (0.8mg/L) and nano-ZnO (50mg/L) significantly up-regulated the expression of corticotropin-releasing factor, sodium/iodidesymporter, iodothyronine deiodinases and thyroid receptors and significantly down-regulated the expression of thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroglobulin (TG), transthyretin (TTR) and thyroid receptors. The protein expression levels of TG and TTR were also significantly down-regulated in the co-exposure groups. In addition, the expression of the thyroid peroxidase gene was unchanged in all groups. The results demonstrated that PFOS and nano-ZnO co-exposure could cause more serious thyroid-disrupting effects in zebrafish than exposure to PFOS alone. Our results also provide insight into the mechanism of disruption of the thyroid status by PFOS and nano-ZnO.
