Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a causative factor associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Over the past few decades, extensive research has been carried out on the relationship between the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio of ingested lipids and the progression of atherosclerosis. However, there are still many uncertainties regarding the precise nature of this relationship, which has led to challenges in providing sound dietary advice to the general public. There is therefore a pressing need to review our current understanding of the relationship between the dietary n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio and atherosclerosis, and to summarize the underlying factors contributing to the current uncertainties. Initially, this article reviews the association between the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio and CVDs in different countries. A summary of the current understanding of the molecular mechanisms of n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio on atherosclerosis is then given, including inflammatory responses, lipid metabolism, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol oxidation, and vascular function. Possible reasons behind the current controversies on the relationship between the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio and atherosclerosis are then provided, including the precise molecular structures of the fatty acids, diet-gene interactions, the role of fat-soluble phytochemicals, and the impact of other nutritional factors. An important objective of this article is to highlight areas where further research is needed to clarify the role of n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio on atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Dietary fish oil (FO) replacement has led to an inflammatory response in fish species. This study aimed to identify immune-related proteins in the liver tissue of fish fed a FO-based or soybean oil (SO)-based diet. By conducting proteomics and phosphoproteomics analyses, a total of 1601 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and 460 differentially abundant phosphorylated proteins (DAPs) were identified, respectively. Enrichment analysis revealed immune-related proteins involved in bacterial infection, pathogen identification, cytokine production, and cell chemotaxis. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway exhibited significant alterations in both protein and phosphorylation levels, with several hub DEPs and DAPs associated with MAPK pathway and leukocyte transendothelial migration being notable. In vitro experiments indicated that linolenic acid (LNA), derived from SO, inhibited the expression of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), but increased the expression of signaling proteins linked to nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and MAPK pathways. Transwell assays indicated that treatment of liver cells with LNA promoted macrophage migration. Collectively, the results showed that the SO-based diet upregulated the expression of NF-κB signaling-related proteins and activated the MAPK pathway, promoting immune cell migration. These findings provide novel insights for developing effective solutions to alleviate health problems caused by dietary high levels of SO inclusion.

Abstract
Marine fish larvae often experience high mortality unrelated to predation during early life stages, and farmed ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) is no exception. Knowing when the adaptive immune system is developed and fully functional, and how nutrition may modulate these processes is therefore of importance to establish effective prophylactic measures and will also extend the relatively limited knowledge on the immune system in lower vertebrates. The thymus anlage of ballan wrasse was found to be histologically visible for the first time at larval stage 3 (20-30 days post hatch, dph) and becomes lymphoid at stage 5 (50-60 dph) correlating with an increase of T-cell marker transcripts. At this stage, a clear zonation into a RAG1+ cortex and a RAG1- CD3ϵ+ medulla was distinguished, indicating that T-cell maturation processes in ballan wrasse are similar to other teleosts. The higher abundance of CD4-1+ compared to CD8β+ cells in the thymus together with the apparent lack of CD8β+ cells in gill, gut, and pharynx, where CD4-1+ cells were identified, indicates that helper T-cells have a more prominent role during larval development compared to cytotoxic T-cells. As ballan wrasse lacks a stomach but has an exceptionally high IgM expression in the hindgut, we hypothesize that helper T-cells are crucial for activation and recruitment of IgM+ B-cells and possibly other leukocytes to the gut during early development. Nutritional factors such as DHA/EPA, Zn and Se may lead to an earlier expression of certain T-cell markers as well as a larger size of the thymus, indicating an earlier onset of adaptive immunity. Including live feeds that supplies the larva with higher amounts of these nutrients can therefore be beneficial for ballan wrasse farming.

Abstract
Inclusion of new environmental toxicants increase with the amount of plant ingredients substituting marine proteins and oils in feed for farmed Atlantic salmon (Salma salar). Agricultural pesticides like chlorpyrifos-methyl, present in commercial salmon feeds, may affect salmon immune and detoxification responses. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), surrounding the net pens, grazing on feces and uneaten pellets may be affected accordingly. The aim of this study was to analyze transcription responses in Atlantic cod head kidney tissue and isolated leukocytes following dietary chlorpyrifos-methyl inclusions and possible interactions with proinflammatory signals. Head kidney tissues and leukocytes were isolated from cod fed diets contaminated with chlorpyrifos-methyl (0.5 mg/kg, 2.4 mg/kg, 23.2 mg/kg) for 30 days. The isolated leukocytes were further challenged with bacteria (lipopolysaccharide (LPS), virus (polyinosinic acid:polycytidylic acid (PIC) mimic and l-arginine, an immuno-modulating amino acid, in vitro. The LPS-induced transcription of the interleukin genes il-1β, il-6, il-8 increased in leukocytes isolated from cod fed chlorpyrifos-methyl 23.2 mg/kg, compared to cod fed the control diet, indicating increased inflammation. Transcriptional levels of carnitine palmitoyl transferase (cpt1a), aryl hydrogen receptor (ahr) and catalase (cat) were all reduced by dietary inclusions of chlorpyrifos-methyl in the leukocytes. The findings suggests that dietary chlorpyrifos-methyl exposure impair inflammation, detoxification and redox signaling in cod leukocytes.

Abstract
This study sought to investigate whether a "natural diet" (mimicking the fatty acid composition of freshwater aquatic insects eaten by salmon parr) during the freshwater (FW) life stage of pre-smolt Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) affected red blood cells and gill fatty acid composition as well as eicosanoid metabolism in gill during smolting at different temperatures. Before being transferred to seawater (SW), salmon parr were fed with a modified (MO) diet containing vegetable oils (rapeseed, palm, and linseed oils) supplemented with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) to completely replace the fish oil (FO). Fatty acid composition in red blood cells and gill tissues was determined before SW transfer and six weeks after. Additionally, the expression of genes associated with eicosanoid metabolism and Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity in salmon gill was examined at different temperatures before SW transfer and 24 h after. The results showed the changes in fatty acid composition, including sum monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), ARA, EPA, and sum n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6 PUFA) in both red blood cells and gill tissues at the FW stage were consistent with the fatty acid profiles of the supplied MO and FO fish diets; however sum EPA and DHA composition exhibited opposite trends to those of the FO diet. The proportion of ARA, EPA, and n-6 PUFA increased, whereas sum MUFAs and DHA decreased in the red blood cells and gill tissues of MO-fed fish compared to those fed with the FO diet at FW stage. Additionally, 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (Flap) expression was downregulated in MO-fed fish prior to SW transfer. During the process of SW transfer at different temperatures, the MO diet remarkably suppressed NKAα1a expression in MO-fed fish both at 12 and 16 °C. The MO diet also upregulated phospholipase A2 group IV (PLA2g4) expression in gills at 8, 12, and 16 °C, but suppressed phospholipase A2 group VI (PLA2g6) expression in gills at 12 °C compared to FO-fed fish at 12 °C and MO-fed fish at 8 °C. The MO diet also upregulated Cyclooxygenase 2 (Cox-2) expression at 8 °C compared to FO-fed fish and increased Arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (5-Lox) expression in MO-fed fish at 16 °C compared to both FO-fed fish at 16 °C and MO-fed fish at 8 °C. Our study also determined that both SW transfer water temperatures and diets during the FW period jointly influenced the mRNA expression of PLA2g4, PLA2g6, and Lpl, whereas 5-Lox was more sensitive to dietary changes. In conclusion, the MO diet affected the fatty acid composition in gill and in red blood cells. When transferred to SW, dietary ARA supplementation could promote the bioavailability for eicosanoid synthesis in gill mainly via PLA2g4 activation, and potentially inhibit the stress and inflammatory response caused by different water temperatures through dietary EPA supplementation.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to investigate how freshwater diets impact on immunity in Atlantic salmon smolts in freshwater, during transfer to seawater and in post smolts during the seawater stage with and without pancreas disease (PD) infection. Three specific freshwater diets were prepared: (i) A diet similar in composition to commercial salmon freshwater diets (Standard diet); (ii) A diet composed of vegetable oils (rapeseed, palm and linseed oils) mimicking the fat composition in aquatic insects - the natural diet of wild salmon in freshwater (Fatty acid diet); (iii) A diet enriched with possible immune modulating amino acids including dl-methionine, l-lysine, l-threonine and taurine (Amino acid diet). After seawater transfer, all fish were fed the same commercial diet. Head kidneys were extracted, and their leukocytes isolated from smolts right before transfer to seawater, from post smolts one and six weeks after transfer to seawater, and from post smolts in seawater after 8 weeks of ongoing PD infection. In addition, to provoke bacterial or virus induced inflammation in vitro, the individual leukocyte suspension from all fish were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or polyinosinic acid: polycytidylic acid (PIC). The transfer of smolts from fresh-to seawater changed the transcription of several types of genes. Particularly in isolates from fish fed the Standard or Fatty acid diet in freshwater, overall gene transcription (IL-1β, CD83, INF-γ, cox2, cd36, MGAT2, catalase) declined. However, the Amino acid diet stimulated the LPS induced gene transcription of IL-1β, CD83, Cox2, and INF-γ at this stage. In freshwater smolts, PIC stimulated leukocytes showed higher transcription level of Mx and viperin in the Fatty acid and Amino acid diet groups compared to the Standard diet group. In seawater post smolts, Mx and viperin responded similarly to PIC challenge in all diet groups. Furthermore, leukocytes isolated from PD infected fish, continued responding to PIC, regardless of freshwater diet.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of dietary level and ratio of n-6/n-3 fatty acids (FA) on growth, disease progression and expression of immune and inflammatory markers in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) following challenge with Paramoeba perurans. Fish (80 g) were fed four different diets with different ratios of n-6/n-3 FA; at 1.3, 2.4 and 6.0 and one diet with ratio of 1.3 combined with a higher level of n-3 FA and n-6 FA. The diet with the n-6/n-3 FA ratio of 6.0 was included to ensure potential n-6 FA effects were revealed, while the three other diets were more commercially relevant n-6/n-3 FA ratios and levels. After a pre-feeding period of 3 months, fish from each diet regime were challenged with a standardized laboratory challenge using a clonal culture of P. perurans at the concentration of 1,000 cells L−1. The subsequent development of the disease was monitored (by gross gill score), and sampling conducted before challenge and at weekly sampling points for 5 weeks post-challenge. Challenge with P. perurans did not have a significant impact on the growth of the fish during the challenge period, but fish given the feed with the highest n-6/n-3 FA ratio had reduced growth compared to the other groups. Total gill score for all surfaces showed a significant increase with time, reaching a maximum at 21 days post-challenge and declined thereafter, irrespective of diet groups. Challenge with P. perurans influenced the mRNA expression of examined genes involved in immune and inflammatory response (TNF-α, iNOS, IL4-13b, GATA-3, IL-1β, p53, COX2 and PGE2-EP4), but diet did not influence the gene expression. In conclusion, an increase in dietary n-6/n-3 FA ratio influenced the growth of Atlantic salmon challenged with P. perurans; however, it did not alter the mRNA expression of immune genes or progression of the disease.

Abstract
The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is an economically important fish, both in aquaculture and in the wild. In vertebrates, macrophages are some of the first cell types to respond to pathogen infection and disease. While macrophage biology has been characterized in mammals, less is known in fish. Our previous work identified changes in the morphology, phagocytic ability, and miRNA profile of Atlantic salmon adherent head kidney leukocytes (HKLs) from predominantly “monocyte-like” at Day 1 of in vitro culture to predominantly “macrophage-like” at Day 5 of culture. Therefore, to further characterize these two cell populations, we examined the mRNA transcriptome profile in Day 1 and Day 5 HKLs using a 44K oligonucleotide microarray. Large changes in the transcriptome were revealed, including changes in the expression of macrophage and immune-related transcripts (e.g. csf1r, arg1, tnfa, mx2), lipid-related transcripts (e.g. fasn, dhcr7, fabp6), and transcription factors involved in macrophage differentiation and function (e.g. klf2, klf9, irf7, irf8, stat1). The in silico target prediction analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using miRNAs known to change expression in Day 5 HKLs, followed by gene pathway enrichment analysis, supported that these miRNAs may be involved in macrophage maturation by targeting specific DEGs. Elucidating how immune cells, such as macrophages, develop and function is a key step in understanding the Atlantic salmon immune system. Overall, the results indicate that, without the addition of exogenous factors, the adherent HKL cell population differentiates in vitro to become macrophage-like.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The effect of diet on immune responses is an area of intense investigation. Dietary lipids have been shown to differently influence and fine-tune the reactivity of immune cell subsets, thus potentially affecting clinical outcomes. Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma face malnutrition, due to swallowing impairment related to the tumor site or to treatment sequalae, and may need supplemental parenteral nutrition (SPN) in addition to oral feeding when enteral nutrition is not feasible. Additionally, immune depression is a well-known complication in these patients. Parenteral nutrition (PN) bags contain amino acids, minerals, electrolytes and mostly lipids that provide calories in a concentrated form and are enriched with essential fatty acids. The aim of this study was to investigate multiple parameters of the immune responses in a cohort of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma undergoing supplemental PN with bags enriched in ω-3 or ω-9 and ω-6 fatty acids. METHODS To our knowledge, this was the first exploratory study to investigate the effects of two different PN lipid emulsions on specific immune cells function of patients with advanced head and neck squamous carcinoma. ω-3-enriched fish-oil-based- and ω-6- and ω-9-enriched olive-oil-basedSPN was administered to two groups of patients for 1 wk in the context of an observational multicentric study. Polychromatic flow cytometry was used to investigate multiple subsets of leukocytes, with a special focus on cellular populations endowed with antitumor activity. RESULTS Patients treated with olive-oil-based PN showed an increase in the function of the innate (natural killer cells and monocytes) and adaptive (both CD4 and CD8 cells) arms of the immune response. CONCLUSION An increase in the function of the innate and adaptive arms of the immune response may favor antitumoral responses.

Abstract
The interaction of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (EPA+DHA) levels with omega-6 to omega-3 ratios (ω6:ω3), and their impact on head kidney lipid metabolism in farmed fish, are not fully elucidated. We investigated the influence of five plant-based diets (12-week exposure) with varying EPA+DHA levels (0.3, 1.0, or 1.4%) and ω6:ω3 (high ω6, high ω3, or balanced) on tissue lipid composition, and transcript expression of genes involved in fatty acid and eicosanoid metabolism in Atlantic salmon head kidney. Tissue fatty acid composition was reflective of the diet with respect to C18 PUFA and MUFA levels (% of total FA), and ω6:ω3 (0.5–1.5). Fish fed 0.3% EPA+DHA with high ω6 (0.3% EPA+DHA↑ω6) had the highest increase in proportions (1.7–2.3-fold) and in concentrations (1.4-1.8-fold) of arachidonic acid (ARA). EPA showed the greatest decrease in proportion and in concentration (by ~½) in the 0.3% EPA+DHA↑ω6 fed fish compared to the other treatments. However, no differences were observed in EPA proportions among salmon fed the high ω3 (0.3 and 1.0% EPA+DHA) and balanced (1.4% EPA+DHA) diets, and DHA proportions were similar among all treatments. Further, the transcript expression of elovl5a was lowest in the 0.3% EPA+DHA↑ω6 fed fish, and correlated positively with 20:3ω3, 20:4ω3 and EPA:ARA in the head kidney. This indicates that high dietary 18:3ω3 promoted the synthesis of ω3 LC-PUFA. Dietary EPA+DHA levels had a positive impact on elovl5a, fadsd5 and srebp1 expression, and these transcripts positively correlated with tissue ΣMUFA. This supported the hypothesis that LC-PUFA synthesis is positively influenced by tissue MUFA levels in Atlantic salmon. The expression of pparaa was higher in the 0.3% EPA+DHA↑ω6 compared to the 0.3% EPA+DHA↑ω3 fed fish. Finally, significant correlations between head kidney fatty acid composition and the expression of eicosanoid synthesis-related transcripts (i.e., 5loxa, 5loxb, cox1, cox2, ptges2, ptges3, and pgds) illustrated the constitutive relationships among fatty acids and eicosanoid metabolism in salmon.

Abstract
For the very first time, the nutritional and physicochemical properties of the oil extracted from hackberry Celtis australis fruit were investigated with the aim of possible applications of such wild fruit oil. The physicochemical properties such as peroxide value, acidity, saponification, iodine value and total fat content of the extracted oil were examined extensively. The obtained results showed that peroxide value, acidity, saponification, iodine value and total fat content of the extracted oil were found to be 4.9 meq O2/kg fat, 0.9 mg KOH/g fat, 193.6 mg KOH/g fat, 141.52 mg I2/g fat and ~5%, respectively. The predominant fatty acid found in this wild fruit is linoleic acid which was calculated to be 73.38%±1.24. In addition, gamma-tocopherol (87%) and β-sitosterol (81.2%±1.08) were the major tocopherol and sterol compositions found in Celtis australis seed oil. Moreover, equivalent carbon number (ECN) analysis has indicated that the three linoleic acids are the main composition of the triacylglycerols extracted from Celtis australis. Also, the high value of omega 6 and β-sitosterol make this oil applicable in cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
The aim was to study the effect of resveratrol on the interplay of inflammatory signals using three different cell models; a metabolic organ (liver), an endocrine organ (visceral adipose tissue, VAT) and an immune organ (head kidney leukocytes, HKL) following lipopolysaccharide challenge (LPS). Atlantic salmon HKL, liver cells and VAT were isolated from the same fish (n = 5). Each cell type was cultured either as mono-cultures, as co-cultures between HKL-liver cells, liver cells-VAT and HKL-VAT. Triple -cultures included all three tissues. In all cultures of HKL, LPS induced transcription of IL-1β, cox2, tnfα, IL-12, ccattβ and Ahr were significantly inhibited by resveratrol (100, 200 μM). Likewise, in all cultures of liver cells, the LPS induced expression of IL-1β was inhibited by resveratrol (100 and 200 μM). HKL, both mono-cultures and triple-cultures and VAT cocultured with liver cells, showed LPS induced cox2 transcription that was inhibited by resveratrol (100 and 200 μM). In contrast, VAT cultured as triple cultures, resveratrol 200 μM particularly, in the presence of LPS, seemed to increase the expression of IL-1β and ccattβ. Resveratrol did not significantly affect lox5 expression in any culture. HKL and VAT are the main producers of PGE2 in response to inflammatory stimuli. VAT showed high endogenous production of eicosanoids, particularly LTB4 and LTB5. Resveratrol inhibited bot LPS induced and endogenous eicosanoid production. Possible targets of resveratrol, Sirt1 and pAMPK were affected differently in the different cells and tissue studied.

Abstract
With the fast growth of today's aquaculture industry, the demand for aquafeeds is expanding dramatically. Insects, which are part of the natural diet of salmonids, could represent a sustainable ingredient for aquaculture feed. The aim of the current study was to test how a partial or total replacement of dietary fishmeal with insect meal affect gene responses involved in inflammation, the eicosanoid pathway and stress response in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in isolated head kidney leukocytes after exposure to bacterial or viral mimic. Insect meal (IM) was produced from black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) larvae. Seawater Atlantic salmon were fed three different diets for 8 weeks; a control diet (IM0, protein from fishmeal and plant based ingredients (25:75) and lipid from fish oil and vegetable oil (33:66); and two insect-meal containing diets, IM66 and IM100, where 66 and 100% of the fishmeal protein was replaced with IM, respectively. Leukocytes were isolated from the head kidney of fish (n = 6) from each of the three dietary groups. Isolated leukocytes were seeded into culture wells and added either a bacterial mimic (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) or a viral mimic (polyinosinic acid: polycytidylic acid, poly I: C) to induce an inflammatory response. Controls (Ctl) without LPS and poly I: C were included. The transcription of interleukins IL-1β, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α were elevated in LPS treated leukocytes isolated from salmon fed the three dietary groups (IM0, IM66 and IM100). The inflammatory-related gene expression in head kidney cells were, however, not affected by the pre-fed substitution of fish meal with IM in the diet of salmon. Gene transcriptions of PTGDS and PTGES were neither affected by LPS, poly I: C or the experimental diets fed prior to cell isolation, while salmon fed with IM showed a lower expression of LOX5. The gene expression of TLR22 and C/EBP-β were down-regulated by the LPS treatment in the cells isolated from salmon fed insect-based diets (IM66 and IM100) compared to fish fed the IM0. Similarly, the leukocytes challenged with LPS and isolated from fish fed with IM66 and IM100 down-regulated the expression of Mn-SOD, GPx1, HSP27 and HSP70 compared to salmon fed IM0. In general, these results suggested that replacement of fishmeal with IM in the diets of Atlantic salmon had no effect on the transcription of pro-inflammatory genes in the head kidney cells. There was, however, an effect of dietary IM on the transcription of antioxidant and stress related genes in the leukocytes.

Abstract
A pivotal matter to aquaculture is the sourcing of sustainable resources as ingredients to aquafeeds. Levels of plant delivered oils as source of fatty acids (FA) in aquafeeds have reached around 70% resulting in reduced levels of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA), such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), in salmon fillet composition. EPA and DHA can modulate inflammation and immune response, so it is crucial to understand how fish immune response is affected by low LC n-3 PUFA diet and if this diet can have a detrimental effect on vaccine response. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) can produce EPA/DHA from α-linolenic acid (ALA) and this endogenous capacity can be explored to develop families with higher tolerance to low LC n-3 PUFA diets. Here we analyze innate and adaptive immune response in Atlantic salmon to a commercial vaccine after being fed low levels of EPA and DHA, and we also compare three strains of salmon selected by their endogenous capacity of synthesizing LC- n-3 PUFA. A total of 2,890 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified (p-value adjusted < 0.1) when comparing vaccinated fish against control non-vaccinated. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG analysis with 442 up/downregulated genes revealed that most DEGs were both related to immune response as well as part of important immune related pathways, as "Toll-like receptor" and "Cytokine-Cytokine interaction". Adaptive response was also addressed by measuring antigen specific IgM, and titers were significantly higher than in the pre-immune fish at 62 days post-immunization. However, diet and strain had no/little effect on vaccine-specific IgM or innate immune responses. Atlantic salmon therefore display robustness in its response to vaccination even when feed low levels of LC n-3 PUFA.

Abstract
Little is known about how variation in omega-6 to omega-3 (ω6:ω3) fatty acid (FA) ratios affects lipid metabolism and eicosanoid synthesis in salmon, and the potential underlying molecular mechanisms. The current study examined the impact of five plant-based diets (12-week exposure) with varying ω6:ω3 (0.3-2.7) on the growth, tissue lipid composition (muscle and liver), and hepatic transcript expression of lipid metabolism and eicosanoid synthesis-related genes in Atlantic salmon. Growth performance and organ indices were not affected by dietary ω6:ω3. The liver and muscle FA composition was highly reflective of the diet (ω6:ω3 of 0.2-0.8 and 0.3-1.9, respectively) and suggested elongation and desaturation of the ω3 and ω6 precursors 18:3ω3 and 18:2ω6. Furthermore, proportions of ω6 and ω3 PUFA in both tissues showed significant positive correlations with dietary inclusion (% of diet) of soy and linseed oils, respectively. Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) further demonstrated that liver long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) synthesis (specifically 20:5ω3 and 20:4ω6) was largely driven by dietary 18:3ω3 and 18:2ω6, even when 20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3 were supplied at levels above minimum requirements. In addition, significant positive and negative correlations were identified between the transcript expression of LC-PUFA synthesis-related genes and liver ω6 and ω3 LC-PUFA, respectively, further supporting FA biosynthesis. Liver ω3 LC-PUFA also correlated negatively with the eicosanoid synthesis-related transcripts pgds and cox1. This is the first study to use CSIA, hepatic transcriptome, and tissue lipid composition analyses concurrently to demonstrate the impact of plant-based diets with varying ω6:ω3 on farmed Atlantic salmon.
