Abstract
This is the first study to explore the positive effects of ginseng stem and leaf saponins (GSLS) on antioxidant capability, immunity, and disease resistance of crucian carp. Seven hundred fifty crucian carps (initial body weight: 25 ± 0.15 g (mean ± SE)) were randomly allocated into five groups with three replicates each; five diets supplemented with the final concentration of 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 g/kg GSLS were fed to crucian carp for 5 weeks. The results demonstrated that, at a concentration of 8 g/kg, the contents of IgM, C4, SOD, GSH-Px, and the activity of AKP in serum of crucian carp gradually increased at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days, and the expression of immune-relative cytokine genes (TNF-α, IL-10, IFN-γ) in the liver, spleen, and the intestinal tract also had a significant up-regulation (P < 0.05), and which were significant difference compared with control (P < 0.05). The above results demonstrated that dietary GSLS showed enhancement effects on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capability, and innate immune response of crucian carp. The feed of 8 g/kg GSLS for 1 week could improve the survival rate 44% more than the control group when crucian carp infected Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila). In conclusion, the addition of GSLS at a concentration of 8 g/kg in the diet improve immune-related enzyme activity better, immune-relative cytokine expression, and disease resistance.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the combined effects of sulfated β-Glucan from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (sGSC) on growth performance, antioxidant ability, nonspecific immunity, and intestinal flora of the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Four experimental diets (sGSC25, sGSC50, sGSC100 and sGSC200) with different levels of sGSC (0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% in diet, respectively) were fed to juvenile crayfish (average weight: 2.5 ± 0.5 g) for 8 weeks. The control diet was given with 2000 mg/kg GSC (GSC200 group). The based control diet was given without sGSC or GSC (blank group). Each group had 3 parallel test pools, 20 crayfish were reared in each pool. At the end of the growth trial, adding dietary 0.025%-0.1% sGSC could significantly improve the growth performance, antioxidant capacity and immunity of crayfish. Compared with GSC, sGSC had a better effect at lower concentration. Higher concentration of sGSC (>0.1%) would cause some side effects. sGSC also could improve the structure of the intestinal flora and optimize the function of the flora. sGSC would increase the abundances of probiotics such as Hafnia and Acinetobacter, and decreases the abundances of maleficent bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae. Higher concentration of sGSC (>0.1%) would increase the abundance of Aeromonas. To conclude, 0.025%-0.1% sGSC can be used as a supplement in crayfish feed to increase growth, immunity, and antioxidant capacity and improve the structure of intestinal flora. These results provided a theoretical basis for the application of sGSC instead of GSC in crayfish breeding. It will be necessary to further study the optimal concentration of sGSC in feed additives in different growth stages of crayfish in the future.

Effect of β-Glucan Supplementation on Growth Performance and Intestinal Epithelium Functions in Weaned Pigs Challenged by Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. Abstract
Background: To examine the effect of β-glucan (BGL) supplementation on growth performance and intestinal epithelium functions in weaned pigs upon Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) challenge. Methods: Thirty-two weaned pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) were assigned into four groups. Pigs fed with a basal diet or basal diet containing 500 mg/kg BGL were orally infused with ETEC or culture medium. Results: Results showed BGL tended to increase the average daily gain (ADG) in ETEC-challenged pigs (0.05 < p < 0.1). Dietary BGL supplementation had no significant influence on nutrient digestibility (p > 0.05). However, BGL improved the serum concentrations of immunoglobulin (Ig) A and IgG, and was beneficial to relieve the increasement of the concentrations of inflammatory cytokines such as the TNF-α and IL-6 upon ETEC-challenge (p < 0.05). Interestingly, BGL significantly increased the duodenal, jejunal and ileal villus height, and increased the jejunal ratio of villus height to crypt depth (V/C) upon ETEC challenge (p < 0.05). BGL also increased the activities of mucosal, sucrase and maltase in the ETEC-challenged pigs (p < 0.05). Moreover, BGL elevated the abundance of Lactobacillus and the concentration of propanoic acid in colon in the ETEC-challenged pigs (p < 0.05). Importantly, BGL elevated the expression levels of zonula occludins-1 (ZO-1) and mucin-2 (MUC-2) in the small intestinal mucosa upon ETEC challenge (p < 0.05). BGL also upregulated the expressions of functional genes such as the claudin-1, cationic amino acid transporter-1 (CAT-1), LAT-1, L amino acid transporter-1 (LAT1), fatty acid transport proteins (FATP1), FATP4, and sodium/glucose cotransporter-1 (SGLT-1) in the duodenum, and the occludin-1 and CAT-1 in the jejunum upon ETEC challenge (p < 0.05). Conclusions: These results suggested that BGL can attenuate intestinal damage in weaned pigs upon ETEC challenge, which was connected with the suppressed secretion of inflammatory cytokines and enhanced serum immunoglobulins, as well as improved intestinal epithelium functions and microbiota.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of dietary supplementation of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) + β-glucan (Immunogen®) was investigated on growth performance, body composition, gut microflora, innate immune responses and gene expression of some proinflammatory cytokines in shabout (Tor grypus). Shabout fingerlings (35 ± 1.2 g) were fed with basal diet (control) or basal diet supplemented with Immunogen® at 0.5, 1 and 1.5% of feed for 90 days. According to the results, growth parameters were significantly improved in fish fed with prebiotic (1 and 1.5%) for 90 days (p < 0.05). The carcass protein content was significantly higher in fish nourished by prebiotic at 1.5% of feed for 90 days compared to fish received the basal diet (p < 0.05). Feeding with various levels of Immunogen® resulted in the significant promotion of the population of intestinal Lactobacillus spp. in the prebiotic-treated groups relative to the control group (p < 0.05). Serum total globulin was significantly higher in all prebiotic groups relative to the control group at day 60. Serum bactericidal and lysozyme activities were significantly (p < 0.05) elevated after feeding with dietary prebiotic at all intervals (days 30, 60 and 90). However, the highest serum bactericidal activities were recorded in fish fed with Immunogen® at 1.5% of diet (p < 0.05). The transcription levels of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin 8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were significantly increased in the head kidney of fish treated with dietary prebiotic at all intervals. The results show that dietary supplementation with Immunogen®, particularly at the level of 1.5%, can positively alter growth parameters, carcass protein, intestinal microflora and immune responses of shabout.

Abstract
Different levels of mannan oligosaccharides (MOs) (100, 300 and 500 mg kg-1) were incorporated into a basal diet to formulate three diets, which were used to test the growth performance and innate immunity of loaches. The basal diet without any MOs served as the control. Loaches fed with MO-containing diets for 70 days showed a higher specific growth rate, condition factor, survival rate, intestine weight index, intestine length index, intestine Lactobacillus population, intestine Bifidobacterium population, phenoloxidase activity, superoxide dismutase activity, glutathione peroxidase activity, acid phosphatase activity, alkaline phosphatase activity, lysozyme level, complement 3 and resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila than the loaches in the control group. The feed conversion ratio, intestine Escherichia coli population, malondialdehyde level, aspartate aminotransferase level and alanine aminotransferase level showed an opposite trend. The optimal dose of dietary MOs required for the maximum growth of loaches was 300 mg kg-1. Results indicated that dietary MOs promoted the growth performance and innate immunity of loaches and could be used as a dietary supplement for loaches.

Abstract
Aeromonas veronii is a major pathogenic bacterium in humans and animals. When it causes outbreaks, there are enormous economic losses to the aquaculture industry. An effective live attenuated vaccine strain, ΔhisJ, was obtained in our previous studies by gene knockout in Aeromonas veronii TH0426 using the suicide vector pRE112. Here, we evaluated whether the live attenuated vaccine ΔhisJ was suitable for prevention of Aeromonas veronii infection by injection and immersion in loaches. Compared with that of the TH0426 wild-type strain, the virulence of the live vaccine was significantly weakened. Vaccine safety assessment results also indicated that 1 × 107 CFU/mL live vaccine was safe and did not induce clinical symptoms or obvious pathological changes. Additionally, after challenging loaches with Aeromonas veronii TH0426, the relative percent survival of the IN3 injection group was 65.66%, and that of the IM group was 50.78%. Our data show that the live attenuated vaccine ΔhisJ can improve the immune protection rate of loaches. Furthermore, increased enzyme activity parameters (SOD, LZM, ACP, and AKP) in the skin mucus, increased enzyme activity parameters (SOD, LZM, ACP, AKP, and GPx) in the serum, increased specific IgM antibodies and cytokine IL-1β contents in the serum, and increased cytokine (IL-15, pIgR, IL-1β, and TNF-α) expression in the liver and spleen were observed. These data are the first to indicate that the live attenuated vaccine ΔhisJ is suitable for the development of a safe and effective vaccine against Aeromonas veronii infection in loach aquaculture.

Abstract
An 8-week trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary β-glucan supplement (0, 0.01%, 0.02%, or 0.04%) on growth and health of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei at low salinity of 3 practical salinity unit (psu). The L. vannamei fed 0.02% and 0.04% β-glucan gained more weight and showed higher activities of protease, amylase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase in the intestine than in the control (0% β-glucan). The L. vannamei fed 0.04% β-glucan had a higher condition factor than those fed the control diet. Amylase activity in the hepatopancreas of L. vannamei fed 0.02% β-glucan was higher than those fed the control diet. Dietary β-glucan supplement increased the mRNA expressions of Toll-like receptor, myostatin, immune deficiency or heat shock protein 70, but decreased the mRNA expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α and C-type lectin 3 in both hepatopancreas and intestine. The response of intestine microbiota in L. vannamei fed 0.04% β-glucan was further compared to the control. The 0.04% β-glucan supplement reduced richness and diversity of the intestinal microbial community as indicated by the low values of Chao1 estimator, ACE estimator, Simpson index and Shannon diversity index. Abundances of Bacillus, Chitinibacter, Geobacillus and Vibrio in the intestine increased, while Flavobacterium, Microbacterium and Mycobacterium decreased significantly in L. vannamei fed 0.04% β-glucan compared to the control. This study indicates that dietary β-glucan supplement at 0.02%-0.04% can significantly improve digestibility, antioxidant capacity and immunity in L. vannamei, and thus improve growth performance and survival at low salinity. These beneficial effects of β-glucan probably are related to the dominance of probiotics over potential pathogens in the intestine.
