Abstract
Excess utilization of plant protein sources in animal feed has been found to adversely affect the antioxidant properties and immunity of animals. While the role of gut microbes in plant protein-induced inflammation has been identified in various models, the specific mechanisms regulating gut microbes in crustaceans remain unclear. Accordingly, this study was designed to investigate the effects of replacing fishmeal with soybean meal (SM) on the hepatopancreas antioxidant and immune capacities, and gut microbial functions of crayfish, as well as the potential microbial regulatory mechanisms. 750 crayfish (4.00 g) were randomly divided into five groups: SS0, SS25, SS50, SS75, and SS100, and fed diets with different levels of soybean meal substituted for fishmeal for six weeks. High SM supplementation proved detrimental to maintaining hepatopancreas health, as indicated by an increase in hemolymph MDA content, GPT, and GOT activities, the observed rupture of hepatopancreas cell basement membranes, along with the decreased number of hepatopancreatic F cells. Moreover, crayfish subjected to high SM diets experienced obvious inflammation in hepatopancreas, together with up-regulated mRNA expression levels of nfkb, alf, and tlr (p<0.05), whereas the lzm mRNA expression level exhibited the highest value in the SS25 group. Furthermore, hepatopancreas antioxidant properties highly attenuated by the level of dietary SM substitution levels, as evidenced by the observed increase in MDA content (p<0.05), decrease in GSH content (p<0.05), and inhabitation of SOD, CAT, GPx, and GST activities (p<0.05), along with down-regulated hepatopancreas cat, gpx, gst, and mmnsod mRNA expression levels via inhibiting nrf2/keap1 pathway. Functional genes contributing to metabolism identified that high SM diets feeding significantly activated lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, revealing gut dysfunction acted as the cause of inflammation. The global microbial co-occurrence network further indicated that the microbes contributing more to serum indicators and immunity were in module eigengene 17 (ME17). A structural equation model revealed that the genes related to alf directly drove the serum enzyme activities through microbes in ME17, with OTU399 and OTU533 identified as major biomarkers and classified into Proteobacteria that secrete endotoxins. To conclude, SM could replace 25 % of fishmeal in crayfish diets without negatively affecting immunity, and antioxidant capacity. Excessive SM levels contributed to gut dysfunction and weakened the innate immune system of crayfish.

Abstract
The primary objective of this research was to investigate the effects of fermented Auricularia cornea var. Li./blueberry (FACB) on the gut microbiota of these super-large mouse models. The study, found that the groups who were given different amounts of FACB saw a significant reduction in their triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. There was a noteworthy increase in the ranks of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (P < 0.05). Furthermore, it was noted that FACB influenced the gut microbiota of the obese rats, improving in both the variety and quantity of short-chain fatty acids present in their intestines. This research provided the inaugural evidence of FACB's potential as an effective anti-obesity agent in a high-fat diet model, implying it could serve as a preventive measure against obesity.

Abstract
As a medicinal and edible plant, Chinese yam (CY) can promote the enrichment of intestinal probiotics. Mucilage polysaccharides, diosgenin and taxifolin are the dominant components of CY. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the impact of Chinese yam on gut microbiome structure and metabolism is attributable to its components. In the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and colon fermentation system, the changes in gut microbiota composition and function were determined by 16S rRNA sequencing, and the levels of bacterial metabolites including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and indole-like metabolites were detected by gas chromatography and an enzyme-linked immunoassay. The results show that CY, mucilage polysaccharides, diosgenin and taxifolin could increase the microbial diversity index. Furthermore, probiotics including Lactobacillus and Bacteroides were significantly increased, while harmful bacteria such as Escherichia and Proteus declined. CY could increase the production of SCFAs including acetic acid and butyric acid. Of note, CY and diosgenin displayed similar impacts on enhancing the abundance of Clostridium and promoting the production of indole-3-lactic acid and lactic acid. These findings provide evidence supporting Chinese yam as a natural food to regulate intestinal health. Diosgenin as a component of CY contributes mostly to the impact on regulating intestinal flora.

Abstract
This study examined the impact of dietary limonene treatment on the growth performance, immune response, and disease resistance of common carp, Cyprinus carpio. The fish were fed with either a control diet (CTL; no limonene supplementation) or four experimental diets containing 50 (50 L), 100 (100 L), 200 (200 L), and 400 (400 L) mg/kg limonene over a 70-day period, followed by Aeromonas hydrophila challenge. The 200 L treatment resulted in a significant decrease in FCR compared to the CTL treatment. The highest post-challenge mortality was associated with the CTL treatment (62.7%), while the 200 L treatment had the lowest mortality (30.7%). Before the challenge, dietary limonene significantly increased humoral and skin mucosal immune parameters compared to the CTL treatment. The highest leukocyte, lymphocyte counts, skin mucosal protease activity, and intestinal lactic acid bacteria were observed in the 200 L treatment before the challenge. The highest plasma lysozyme activity was observed in the 400 L treatment, whereas the highest skin mucosal lysozyme and peroxidase activities were observed in the 100 L and 200 L treatments before the challenge. There were no significant differences in the blood neutrophil, monocyte, and eosinophil counts, humoral alternative complement activity, skin mucosal alkaline phosphatase activity, and the intestinal total viable bacteria among the treatments before the challenge. After the challenge, the 200 L treatment exhibited the highest leukocyte, neutrophil, and monocyte count, skin mucosal immune parameters, and intestinal lactic acid bacteria, whereas the highest blood eosinophil count was observed in the 100 L, 200 L, and 400 L treatments. At this time, the lowest blood lymphocyte counts were observed in the 100 L and 200 L, but the lowest intestinal total viable bacteria were observed in the 100 L, 200 L, and 400 L treatments. Based on these findings, dietary limonene at 200 mg/kg is ideal for common carp to promote feed efficiency, innate immunity boosting, and resistance against A. hydrophila.

Abstract
The immunomodulatory roles of Chinese herbal Medicine (CHM) in aquatic animals have been well-recorded. However, how CHM impacts the intestinal microbiota and serum metabolism is not fully understood. In this study, the effects of different additive levels of CHM on the growth performance, immunity, intestinal flora and serum metabolism of hybrid grouper (♀Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × ♂Epinephelus lanceolatu) were investigated. The addition of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% Chinese herbal medicine compound to feed could significantly improve the weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR) and survival rate (SR) of grouper, reduced feed coefficient, while had no significant difference on morphometric parameter. The most significant improvement for the parameters above was observed in 1.5% group. Different addition levels of CHM could also significantly enhance the activities of ACP, AKP, SOD, CAT and LZM in serum. Accordingly, the supplementation of CHM significantly induced up-regulation of immune genes such as IL-8, IL-1β, TNF-α, Nrf2, Lzm in the liver, spleen and head kidney of grouper, improved the resistance of grouper to V. harveyi as well. The intestinal flora analysis showed that at the phylum level, the main dominant species of intestinal microorganisms were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Actinobacteriota, Gemmatimonadota, Desulfobacterota, Fusobacteriota and Myxococcota. At the genus level, the high abundance was Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Bacteroides, Escherichia, Romboutsia, Sphingomonas and Muribaculaceae. The abundance of probiotics (such as Lachnospiraceae, Lactobacillaceae, Streptococcaceae, etc) in CHM-supplement groups were higher (highest in 1.5% group) compared with control group. Moreover, a total of 11 common differential metabolic pathways were screened by LC-MS metabolism analysis of serum, they were Neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, Purine metabolism, Linoleic acid, Glycerophospholipid metabolism, Taurine and hypotaurine metabolism, Arginine and proline metabolism, ABC transporters, Aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, Arachidonic acid metabolism, Drug metabolism-cytochrome P450, alpha-Linolenic acid metabolism. Also, three common differential metabolites (PI(20:4(5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z)/18:1(11Z)), PC(20:3(8Z,11Z,14Z)/22:1(13Z)), PC(22:0/20:4(5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z)) associated with intestinal health, growth and disease resistance was found. These data will contributes to a comprehensive understand for the regulatory roles of CHM on fish, which is also beneficial for the disease control and sustainable development of aquaculture.

Abstract
Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita Thunb. cv. Tiegun), a type of homologous medicinal plant, mainly grows in sandy soil (SCY) and loessial soil (LCY). However, the effects of the soil on the metabolites in SCY and LCY remain unclear. Herein, this study aims to comprehensively elucidate the metabolites in SCY and LCY. A UPLC-MS/MS-based, widely targeted metabolomics approach was adapted to compare the chemical composition of SCY and LCY. A total of 988 metabolites were detected, including 443 primary metabolites, 510 secondary metabolites, and 35 other compounds. Notably, 177 differential metabolites (classified into 12 categories) were identified between SCY and LCY; among them, 85.9% (152 differential metabolites) were upregulated in LCY. LCY significantly increased the contents of primary metabolites such as 38 lipids and 6 nucleotides and derivatives, as well as some secondary metabolites such as 36 flavonoids, 28 phenolic acids, 13 alkaloids, and 6 tannins. The results indicate that loessial soil can improve the nutritional and medicinal value of D. opposita.

Abstract
Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) is ubiquitous in aquatic environment, but its effect on intestinal health of fish has yet not been investigated. In the present study, the AB strain zebrafish embryos were exposed to environmentally realistic concentrations (0, 30, 300, and 3000 ng·L-1) of TDCIPP for 90 days, after which the fish growth and physiological activities were evaluated, and the intestinal microbes were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. Our results manifested that the body length and body weight were significantly reduced in the female zebrafish but not in males. Further analyses revealed that TDCIPP resulted in notable histological injury of intestine, which was accompanied by impairment of epithelial barrier integrity (decreased tight junction protein 2), inflammation responses (increased interleukin 1β), and disruption of neurotransmission (increased serotonin) in female intestine. Male intestines maintained intact intestinal structure, and the remarkably increased activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) might protect the male zebrafish from inflammation and intestinal damage. Furthermore, 16S rRNA sequencing analysis showed that TDCIPP significantly altered the microbial communities in the intestine in a gender-specific manner, with a remarkable increase in alpha diversity of the gut microbiome in male zebrafish, which might be another mechanism for male fish to protect their intestines from damage by TDCIPP. Correlation analysis revealed that abnormal abundances of pathogenic bacteria (Chryseobacterium, Enterococcus, and Legionella) might be partially responsible for the impaired epithelial barrier integrity and inhibition in female zebrafish growth. Taken together, our study for the first time demonstrates the high susceptibility of intestinal health and gut microbiota of zebrafish to TDCIPP, especially for female zebrafish, which could be partially responsible for the female-biased growth inhibition.

Abstract
Chinese yam (Dioscorea polystachya Turczaninow) by-product produced in the water extraction process is commonly directly discarded resulting in a waste of resources and environmental pollution. However, the value of Chinese yam by-product which still contains effective ingredients is far from being fully realized; hence, it has the potential to be a safe and effective feed additive in aquaculture. To investigate the impacts of Chinese yam by-product on growth performance, antioxidant ability, histomorphology, and intestinal microbiota of Micropterus salmoides, juvenile fish (initial weight 13.16 ± 0.05 g) were fed diets supplemented with 0% (control), 0.1% (S1), 0.4% (S2), and 1.6% (S3) of Chinese yam by-product for 60 days. The results showed that no significant difference was found in weight gain, specific growth rate, and survival among all the experimental groups (P > 0.05). Feed conversion ratios of the S1 and S3 groups were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). SOD activity of the S3 group and GSH contents of Chinese yam by-product groups were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). MDA levels of the S2 and S3 groups were significantly lower than those in the control group and the S1 group (P < 0.05). Besides, Chinese yam by-product could protect liver and intestine health, as well as increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria and decrease the abundance of potential pathogens. This study suggests that Chinese yam by-product has the potential to be used as a functional feed additive in aquaculture, providing a reference for efficient recovery and utilization of by-products from plant sources during processing and culturing high-quality aquatic products.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influences of Chinese yam polysaccharide (CYP) dietary supplementation on the composition of intramuscular fat (IMF) and fatty acids (FA) in thigh and breast muscles of broilers. Three hundred and sixty healthy one-day-old broilers (the breed of Crossbred chicken is named 817) with gender-balanced and similar body weight (39 ± 1 g) were randomly allocated into four groups (control, CYP1, CYP2, and CYP3 groups). Broilers in the control group were only fed a basal diet, and broilers in CYP1 group were fed the same diets further supplemented with 250 mg/kg CYP, the CYP2 group was fed the same diets further supplemented with 500 mg/kg CYP, and the CYP3 group was fed the same diets further supplemented with 1000 mg/kg CYP, respectively. Each group consisted of three replicates and each replicate consisted of 30 birds. The feeding days were 48 days. The results observed that the CYP2 group (500 mg/kg) can up-regulate the mRNA expression levels of β-catenin in thigh muscle compared to the control group. At the same time, all CYP groups (CYP1, CYP2, and CYP3 groups) can up-regulate mRNA expression of Wnt1 and β-catenin in breast muscle, while mRNA expression of PPARγ and C/EBPα in breast and thigh muscles could be down-regulated (p < 0.05). In summary, 500 mg/kg of CYP dietary supplementation can reduce IMF content and improve the FAs composition, enhancing the nutritional value of chicken meat.

Abstract
Dioscorea opposite waste (DOW) has been shown to improve the gastrointestinal microbiome, antioxidation capacity, and immune activity, indicating it is a potential feed resource to improve the physiological health and rumen function of weaned lambs. In the present study, the responses of rumen microbiome to DOW supplementation in diet were profiled using metagenome sequencing. In addition, the potential of DOW to regulate plasma parameters in weaned lambs and its possible mechanisms were investigated. Sixty healthy male small tail Han lambs (22.68 ± 2.56 kg) were selected and equally assigned to four dietary treatments: (1) DOW-free diet (CON), (2) addition of 10% DOW diet (DOW1), (3) addition of 15% DOW diet (DOW2), and (4) addition of 20% DOW diet (DOW3). Experimental lambs were fed a corresponding diet for 62 days. Rumen microbiome and plasma parameters were determined at the end of the experiment. The results showed that dietary supplementation with DOW linearly increased the concentration of aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, Immunoglobulin A, Immunoglobulin M, Immunoglobulin G, Glutathione peroxidase, Superoxide dismutase, and total antioxidant capacity in the plasma of weaned lambs, but an opposite trend was observed in Interleukin-1β, Interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and Malondialdehyde between the DOW-supplemented group and the CON group. Sequencing of rumen metagenome revealed that dietary supplementation with 20% DOW significantly affected the microbial composition and function and increased the richness and diversity of rumen microbiota and relative abundance of phylum Verrucomicrobia, Planctomycetes, Fibrobacteres, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria and species Ruminococcaceae_bacterium, Clostridiales_bacterium_NK3B98, Clostridiales_bacterium, and Clostridia_bacterium. It was concluded that supplementing the weaned lamb’s ration with DOW increased the immune response and antioxidant capacity in a dose-dependent manner. Meanwhile, dietary supplementation with 20% DOW modulated the composition of rumen microbiome function by increasing Ruminococcaceae_bacterium and Clostridiales_bacterium with improving the polysaccharide hydrolase activity in the rumen.

Million tonnes of agricultural waste are generated annually worldwide. Agricultural wastes possess similar profiles to the main products but are lower in quality. Managing these agricultural wastes is costly and requires strict regulation to minimise environmental stress. Thus, these by-products could be repurposed for industrial use, such as alternative resources for aquafeed to reduce reliance on fish meal and soybean meal, fertilisers to enrich medium for growing live feed, antimicrobial agents, and immunostimulatory enhancers. Furthermore, utilising agricultural wastes and other products can help mitigate the existing environmental and economic dilemmas. Therefore, transforming these agricultural wastes into valuable products helps sustain the agricultural industry, minimises environmental impacts, and benefits industry players. Aquaculture is an important sector to supply affordable protein sources for billions worldwide. Thus, it is essential to explore inexpensive and sustainable resources to enhance aquaculture production and minimise environmental and public health impacts. Additionally, researchers and farmers need to understand the elements involved in new product development, particularly the production of novel innovations, to provide the highest quality products for consumers. In summary, agriculture waste is a valuable resource for the aquafeed industry that depends on several factors: formulation, costing, supply, feed treatment and nutritional value.

Abstract
In this study, the Chinese yam peel polysaccharide (CYPP) was obtained under the extraction conditions optimized by the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Further biological properties of CYPP-1 purified from CYPP were also determined. The results indicated that the optimum extraction conditions were an extraction temperature of 90.5°C, a liquid-solid ratio of 28.0 ml/g, and an extraction time of 2.94 h, along with a yield of 8.81 ± 1.48%. CYPP-1 was identified as a kind of heteropolysaccharide mostly composed of glucose and galactose (59.4:1.0). The molecular weights were two main parts of 50.5 kDa (54.77%) and 4.4 kDa (21.02%), and the triple-helix conformation was not formed in CYPP-1. Besides, CYPP-1 showed good biological properties including in vitro antioxidant activity and immunomodulatory function on RAW264.7 cells, as well as favorable hypoglycemic effect. Overall, the high-value utilization of CYPP-1 reveals a broad application prospect in the industrial production of functional foods and pharmaceuticals. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Yam peel, which is discarded in large quantities during postharvest processing, results in the production of tremendous by-products and is a great waste of resources. In this study, the yield of water-soluble polysaccharide from yam peel reached 8.81 ± 1.48%. Besides, the purified CYPP-1 exhibited excellent antioxidant activity, favorable immunomodulatory function, and hypoglycemic effect. The high productivity and bioactive effects are both great merits for Chinese yam peel polysaccharide as a promising candidate for foods and medicines industrial production.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of mango peel powder (MGPP) on growth, innate immunity, and immune-antioxidant related gene expression of Nile tilapia reared under biofloc system. Three hundred Nile tilapia (average weight 14.78 ± 0.05 g) were distributed into 15 fiber tanks (300 L per tank) assigned to five treatments in triplication. Fish were fed basal diet containing different levels MGPP as follows: 0 (MGPP0: control), 6.25 (MGPP 6.25), 12.5 (MGPP 12.25), 25 (MGPP 25), and 50 (MGPP 50) g kg-1 diet for 8 weeks. Specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain (WG), final weight (FW), feed conversion ratio (FCR), skin mucus of lysozyme (SMLA), and peroxidase activities (SMPA), serum of lysozyme (SL) and peroxidase (SP) were measured every for weeks; while immune-antioxidant-related gene expressions were determined after 8 weeks post-feeding. The results indicated that MGPP 25 diet resulted in higher SGR, WG, FW, and FCR but no significant differences among treatments were noticed. In terms of immune responses, lysozyme and peroxidase activities in mucus and serum were significantly higher in MGPP 12.5 and MGPP 25 diets against the control. Similarly, significant up-regulation of IL-1 and IL-8 gene expressions was observed in fish fed MGPP 25 against the control. However, no significant differences in LBP, GSTa, GPX, and GSR among treatments were observed. Overall, dietary inclusion of MGPP 25 significantly enhanced immune response and immune related gene expressions but not growth performance and antioxidant gene expressions. The results implied that MGPP can be potentially used as an immunostimulants in Nile tilapia culture.

Abstract
The rice-fish system (RFS), a traditional coculture farming model, was selected as a "globally important agricultural heritage system." Host-associated microbiota play important roles in development, metabolism, physiology, and immune function. However, studies on the gut microbiota of aquatic animals in the RFS are scarce, especially the lack of baseline knowledge of the dynamics of gut microbial communities in rice fish during different developmental stages. In this study, we characterized the microbial composition, community structure, and functions of several sympatric aquatic animals (common carp (Cyprinus carpio), crucian carp (Carassius carassius), and black-spotted frogs (Pelophylax nigromaculatus)), and the environment (water) in the RFS using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Moreover, we investigated stage-specific signatures in the gut microbiota of common carp throughout the three developmental stages (juvenile, sub-adult, and adult). Our results indicated that the Fusobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes were dominant gut microbial phyla in rice fish. The differences in gut microbial compositions and community structure between the three aquatic species were observed. Although no significant differences in alpha diversity were observed across the three developmental stages, the microbial composition and community structure varied with development in common carp in the RFS, with an increase in the relative abundance of Firmicutes in sub-adults and a shift in the functional features of the community. This study sheds light on the gut microbiota of aquatic animals in the RFS. It deepens our understanding of the dynamics of gut microflora during common carp development, which may help improve aquaculture strategies in the RFS.

Abstract
The appropriate domestic cooking methods can retain and protect the biological properties of foods well. Thus, the objective of this study was to unravel the effect of different cooking methods on the microbiota modulatory properties of yam and their non-starch polysaccharides by an in vitro simulated digestion and fermentation model. The results showed that different cooking processes led to different changes in polysaccharide content. The polysaccharide content of yam increased by 21.3~108.2% or decreased by 12.0% compared with that of raw yam. Additionally, the soluble polysaccharides contents in all cooked yam samples significantly increased by 16.85~119.97% after in vitro digestion. The regulation of whole-yam digesta on gut microbiota was partly related with yam polysaccharides. Both yam and yam polysaccharide fermentation appeared to promote beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria, Bacteroides spp. and Megasphaera and suppressed bacterial pathogens such as Ruminococcusforques and Escherichia-Shigella. Household cooking significantly influenced the prebiotic performances of yam and yam polysaccharides by changing the heat-sensitive microbial substrates and their physiology properties. According to our results, normal-pressure steaming and normal-pressure boiling processes can retain the microbiota modulatory effects of Chinese yam.

Abstract
Huge amounts of non-edible by-products could be generated from fruit industrial processes. They consist mainly of peels together with low amounts of pulp and seeds. These by-products pose an environmental hazard due to soil, air, and water pollution. Moreover, treating these by-products is very expensive and under strict governmental regulations. Nevertheless, they are an excellent source of bioactive constituents, such as phenols, flavonoids, terpenes, and glucans. Based on their constituents, these by-products can significantly enhance the antioxidant defense, immune response, and modulation of gut microbiota and host resistance against various diseases. Therefore, sustainable valorization of fruits by-products can efficiently obtain value-added products that improve the well-being of organisms and reduce environmental stress, in addition to earning an additional industrial income. Since aquaculture is a vital economic sector, there is urgent to look for inexpensive natural food additives that improve health and maintain high nutritional quality for farming organisms without harming the environment and human health. Therefore, using fruit wastes as feed additives represents a striking alternative for fruitful aquaculture. In order to make use of these value-added products, it is a dire need to determine their biological effects on aquaculture organisms by understanding their mechanism of action. In this context, this review will holistically address a comprehensive focus on utilizing fruits by-products and their immunostimulant and antioxidative action.

Abstract
Numerous studies on the bioavailability of graphene-based nanomaterials relate to the water-only exposure route. However, the sediment exposure route should be the most important pathway for benthic organisms to ingest graphene, while to date little work on the bioavailability of graphene in benthic organisms has been explored. In this study, with the help of carbon-14-labeled few-layer graphene (14C-FLG), we quantificationally compared the bioaccumulation, biodistribution, and elimination kinetics of 14C-FLG in loaches via waterborne and sediment exposures. After 72 h of exposure, the accumulated 14C-FLG in loaches exposed via waterborne was 14.28 μg/g (dry mass), which was 3.18 times higher than that (4.49 μg/g) exposed via sediment. The biodistribution results showed that, compared to waterborne exposure, sediment exposure remarkably facilitated the transport of 14C-FLG from the gut into the liver, which made it difficult to be excreted. Although 14C-FLG did not cause significant hepatotoxicity, the disruption of intestinal microbiota homeostasis, immune response, and several key metabolic pathways in the gut were observed, which may be due to the majority of 14C-FLG being accumulated in the gut. Overall, this study reveals the different bioavailabilities of graphene in loaches via waterborne and sediment exposures, which is helpful in predicting its bioaccumulation capability and trophic transfer ability.

Abstract
Fish, including hybrid species, are essential components of aquaculture, and the gut microbiome plays a vital role in fish growth, behavior, digestion, and immune health. The gut microbiome can be affected by various internal and/or external factors, such as host development, diet, and environment. We reviewed the effects of diet and dietary supplements on intestinal microorganisms in hybrid fish and the difference in the gut microbiome between the hybrid and their hybrids that originate. Then, we summarized the role of the gut microbiome in the speciation and ecological invasion of hybrid fish. Finally, we discussed possible future studies on the gut microbiome in hybrid fish, including the potential interaction with environmental microbiomes, the effects of the gut microbiome on population expansion, and fish conservation and management.

Abstract
Temperature changes have a great impact on fish feeding, intestinal microorganisms, metabolism, and immune function. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective methods to enhance the survival rates and growth of fish under water temperature changes. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are promising immunostimulatory feed additive, as demonstrated by their beneficial effects in several fish species. This study investigated the short-term effects of dietary LAB on intestinal microbiota composition and immune responses of crucian carp (Carassius auratus) when water temperature decreased from 30 ± 1°C to 18 ± 1°C. Lactococcus (L.) lactis 1,209 and L. lactis 1,242 with potential probiotics isolated from the intestine of Qinghai naked carp (Gymnocypris przewalskii) were selected as feed additives for the crucian carp feeding experiment. A total of 225 commercially available healthy crucian carp (250 ± 10 g) of similar age were kept in 30°C water for a week and then immediately transferred to 18 ± 1°C water, assigned to three dietary treatments for a 16-day feeding trial randomly: (1) HC, diets without additives (the control group); (2) HT, diets with 106 CFU/ml L. lactis 1,209; and (3) HL, with 106 CFU/ml L. lactis 1,242. Each group was set up with 3 replicates and each with 25 fish. The results showed that the mortality rate of crucian carp in HC, HT, and HL group was 50, 27, and 33%, respectively. High-throughput sequencing results displayed that the composition of the intestinal microorganism varied dynamically in response to different treatments and water temperature decrease. Among them, compared with the HC group, a higher abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, and a lower of Actinobacteria appeared in HT and HL. The cytokines heat shock protein 70 (HSP-70) in crucian carp intestinal tract significantly decreased when water temperature decreased (p < 0.05).

Abstract
The gastrointestinal immune system plays an important role in immune homeostasis regulation. It regulates the symbiotic host-microbiome interactions by training and developing the host's innate and adaptive immunity. This interaction plays a vital role in host defence mechanisms and at the same time, balancing the endogenous perturbations of the host immune homeostasis. The fish gastrointestinal immune system is armed with intricate diffused gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALTs) that establish tolerance toward the enormous commensal gut microbiome while preserving immune responses against the intrusion of enteric pathogens. A comprehensive understanding of the intestinal immune system is a prerequisite for developing an oral vaccine and immunostimulants in aquaculture, particularly in cultured fish species. In this review, we outline the remarkable features of gut immunity and the essential components of gut-associated lymphoid tissue. The mechanistic principles underlying the antigen absorption and uptake through the intestinal epithelial, and the subsequent immune activation through a series of molecular events are reviewed. The emphasis is on the significance of gut immunity in oral administration of immunoprophylactics, and the different potential adjuvants that circumvent intestinal immune tolerance. Comprehension of the intestinal immune system is pivotal for developing effective fish vaccines that can be delivered orally, which is less labour-intensive and could improve fish health and facilitate disease management in the aquaculture industry.

Abstract
Plant extracts were considered as natural resources to alleviate weaning stress in pig production. A 28-day study (Phase 1: d 0-14 and Phase 2: d 15-28) was conducted to investigate the effects of compound of hawthorn and yam extracts on growth performance, intestinal health, and immune function in weaned pigs. A total of 144 weaned pigs with average body weight (BW) of 7.89 ± 1.09 kg were assigned to three treatments with six replicates pens by BW and sex. Dietary treatments included negative control (NC), corn-soybean meal basal diet; positive control (PC), NC + 0.08% enzyme preparations and 0.3% acidifiers; and CHY, NC + 0.3% compound of hawthorn and yam extracts. Compared with NC-fed pigs, pigs fed CHY had greater (p < 0.05) growth performance in Phase 1. The CHY-fed pigs had greater (p < 0.05) activities of duodenal lipase, trypsin, and greater (p < 0.05) serum concentrations of total antioxidant capacity and glutathione peroxidase. The CHY-fed pigs had improved (p < 0.05) jejunal morphology and greater (p < 0.05) ileac valeric acid and colonic propionic acid, isobutyric acid concentrations than NC- and PC-fed pigs. In conclusion, CHY can improve growth performance and is a promising additive in weaned pig diets.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary supplementation Curcuma longa hydrolate on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared in a recirculation system. Hemato-immunological parameters, growth performance, nitrogen and phosphorus retention, as well as body composition and its interaction with the intestinal microbiota, were studied. Nile tilapia fingerlings (120) were distributed randomly in 8 polyethylene tanks (40 L). The experimental units were divided into two treatments, in quadruplicate: commercial diet supplemented with 2.5% of C. longa hydrolate and commercial diet without supplementation (control). After 45 days, the treatment supplemented hydrolate showed higher survival than the control group, 95.25% and 82.22%, receptively. In the blood profile, fish supplemented with hydrolate had a higher count of total leukocytes and neutrophils, as well as mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, than control group. The hydrolate group showed a substantial increase in the relative abundance of Cetobacterium and Romboutsia, as well as lower diversity in gut microbiota. The dietary addition of C. longa hydrolate for Nile tilapia seems to have a beneficial effect on gut microbiota, in addition to a likely positive effect on the physiological performance of Nile tilapia by maintaining intestinal homeostasis and promoting survival in reared conditions.

Abstract
Antibiotics are emerging pollutants in our environment. These treatments have been widely used for their low cost, convenient use, and prominent effects. However, the prolonged or excessive use of such drugs can cause toxicity in aquatic organisms. These effects include genotoxicity, metabolic alteration, delayed development and decreased immunity, which carry further risks for ecological systems. In the present study, juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to norfloxacin (NOR) for 42 days, with NOR concentrations ranging from 100 ng/L to 1 mg/L, to assess the effects of environmental concentrations of antibiotics, to investigate the effects of NOR on intestinal morphology, enzymatic activity, and transcriptomic levels of RNA in fish, as well as a risk assessment on human health was carried out. The results demonstrated that oxidative stress was induced, the barrier function of the intestine was damaged, and changes occurred in the expression of immune-related genes in fish chronically exposed to antibiotics. Moreover, NOR could affect the regulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Thus, environmental concentrations of antibiotics can influence the intestinal health of fish and potentially posing health risks to humans.

Abstract
Intensive aquaculture often results in immunosuppression in fish, which may cause a series of diseases. In this study, to investigate the immunosuppressive mechanisms in fish, tilapia were intrapleural injected cyclophosphamide (CTX) at the doses of 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg·kg-1 to induce immunosuppression. We determined the viability of immune cells, the content of lysozyme (LZM) and immunoglobulin M (IgM), the levels of nitric oxide (NO) and antioxidant parameters. Meanwhile, the mRNA levels of complement C3 (c3), igm and the genes associated with the TLR-NF-κB signaling pathway in the head kidney (HK) and spleen were also determined. The results showed that CTX had a significant cytotoxic effect on peripheral blood leukocytes, HK macrophages and spleen cells in a dose-dependent manner. The protein and mRNA levels of C3 and IgM were down-regulated with the increase of CTX concentrations in serum, HK and/or spleen. The NO and LZM contents decreased significantly in HK and spleen after CTX treatments with 75 and 100 mg·kg-1. CTX treatments with 50, 75 and/or 100 mg·kg-1 markedly decreased the antioxidant ability and enhanced lipid peroxidation in HK and spleen. Furthermore, qPCR data showed that CTX treatments with 50-100 mg·kg-1 clearly down-regulated the mRNA levels of tlr2, myd88, irak1, traf6, nfκb1, nfκb2, il-6, il-10 and tnf-α in the HK and/or spleen. Overall results suggested that CTX treatment had a cytotoxic effect on immune cells, induced lipid peroxidation, decreased the antioxidant capacity and inhibited immune function. The immunosuppressive mechanisms of CTX may be associated with the TLR-NF-κB signaling pathway.

Abstract
Ocean acidification and microplastic pollution is a global environmental threat, this research evaluated the effects of ocean acidification and microplastics on mussel digestive tract microbial community. The 16S rRNA gene was sequenced to characterize the flora. Species diversity in the samples was assessed by clustering valid tags on 97% similarity. Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the three most abundant genera in the four groups, with Bacteroidetes showing the highest diversity. However, no differences in flora structure were evident under various treatments. Phylogenetic relationship analysis revealed Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes had the highest OTU diversity. The weighted UniFrac distance, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) cluster tree and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) evaluation results for all samples also showed that changes in pH and microplastics concentration did not significantly affect the microbial community structure in the mussel digestive tract. The results presented the no significant effects of ocean acidification and microplastics intake on mussel intestinal diversity.

Abstract
Modified Renshen Wumei decoction (MRWD), a famous traditional Chinese medicine, is widely used for treating persistent diarrhea. However, as the mechanism by which MRWD regulates diarrhea remains unknown, we examined the protective effects of MRWD on intestinal barrier integrity in a diarrhea model. In total, 48 male rats were randomly distributed to four treatment groups: the blank group (CK group), model group (MC group), Medilac-Vita group (MV group) and Chinese herb group (MRWD group). After a 21-day experiment, serum and colon samples were assessed. The diarrhea index, pathological examination findings and change in D-lactate and diamine oxidase (DAO) contents illustrated that the induction of diarrhea caused intestinal injury, which was ameliorated by MV and MRWD infusion. Metabolomics analysis identified several metabolites in the serum. Some critical metabolites, such as phosphoric acid, taurine, cortisone, leukotriene B4 and calcitriol, were found to be significantly elevated by MRWD infusion. Importantly, these differences correlated with mineral absorption and metabolism and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) pathways. Moreover, it significantly increased the expression levels of TLR4, MyD88 and p-NF-κB p65 proteins and the contents of IL-1 and TNF-α, while the expression levels of occludin, claudin-1 and ZO-1 proteins decreased. These deleterious effects were significantly alleviated by MV and MRWD infusion. Our findings indicate that MRWD infusion helps alleviate diarrhea, possibly by maintaining electrolyte homeostasis, improving the intestinal barrier integrity, and inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB axis.

Abstract
Aquatic animals can be influenced by exposure to microplastics (MPs), but little is known about their recovery capacity following MPs excretion. Here, common carp were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of MPs for 30 days and followed by MPs excretion for another 30 days. Growth, isotopic and elemental compositions and intestinal microbiota were investigated. We found that fish growth was not influenced by exposed to MPs but was significantly reduced following MPs excretion, indicating a delayed effect on growth. MPs intake and excretion, however, had no obvious effects on isotopic and elemental compositions. MPs altered the community structure and composition of intestinal microbiota and might reduce functional diversity. After MPs excretion, interestingly, bacterial community structures of MPs treatments were grouped together with the control, suggesting the general resilience of fish intestinal microbiota. Nevertheless, high abundance of pathogenic Shewanella, Plesiomonas and Flavobacterium was observed in MPs treatments but did not affect the functional potential of intestinal microbiota. The results of this study provide new information for the application of adverse outcome pathway (AOP) in MPs, suggesting the necessity of paying attention to recovery assay following MPs intake in the development of AOP frameworks.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are commonly known as "green" solvents and have been widely used in various fields. However, the ecotoxicity of ILs in aquatic environment has received considerable attention from scientific researchers. This study investigated the toxic effects of different concentrations of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C8mim][PF6]) (0, 1.35, 2.70 and 5.40 mg/L) on intestinal physical barrier, immunological barrier, and intestinal microbiome in common carp on days 30 and 60. The results showed that ([C8mim][PF6]) exposure could reduce the intestinal villus height, decrease the mRNA expression of tight junction genes (occludin, claudin-2 and zonula occludens-1), and increase the levels of D-lactic and diamine oxidase, and reduce acid phosphatase and lysozyme activities, complement 3 and 4 contents, and anti-inflammatory cytokine TGF-β protein level, while increase pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β protein levels in common carp. Moreover, ([C8mim][PF6]) exposure was also found to significantly reduce gut microbial diversity and alter microbial community structure in common carp. Collectively, our study highlighted that exposure to ([C8mim][PF6]) could disrupt intestinal physical barrier, impair immunological barrier and alter intestinal microbiome in common carp, suggesting that ILs exert a negative effect on fish intestinal health status and may pose serious health risks in fish. The results of this study may be helpful to illuminate the toxicity mechanisms of the ILs on fish.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION The diversification of food crops can improve our diets and address the effects of climate change, and in this context the orphan crop Chinese yam shows significant potential as a functional food. As the effects of climate change become increasingly visible even in temperate regions, there is an urgent need to diversify our crops in order to address hunger and malnutrition. This has led to the re-evaluation of neglected species such as Chinese yam (Dioscorea polystachya Turcz.), which has been cultivated for centuries in East Asia as a food crop and as a widely-used ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. The tubers are rich in nutrients, but also contain bioactive metabolites such as resistant starches, steroidal sapogenins (like diosgenin), the storage protein dioscorin, and mucilage polysaccharides. These health-promoting products can help to prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and disorders of the gut microbiome. Whereas most edible yams are tropical species, Chinese yam could be cultivated widely in Europe and other temperate regions to take advantage of its nutritional and bioactive properties. However, this is a laborious process and agronomic knowledge is fragmented. The underground tubers contain most of the starch, but are vulnerable to breaking and thus difficult to harvest. Breeding to improve tuber shape is complex given the dioecious nature of the species, the mostly vegetative reproduction via bulbils, and the presence of more than 100 chromosomes. Protocols have yet to be established for in vitro cultivation and genetic transformation, which limits the scope of research. This article summarizes the sparse research landscape and evaluates the nutritional and medical applications of Chinese yam. By highlighting the potential of Chinese yam tubers, we aim to encourage the adoption of this orphan crop as a novel functional food.

Abstract
Ziziphus Jujuba cv. Pozao has been consumed as a traditional fruit with regional characteristics in China for a long time; however, fewer studies on polysaccharides from Ziziphus Jujuba cv. Pozao (JP) have been documented. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of oral administration of JP on cyclophosphamide-induced ICR mice for 28 days. The results showed that oral administration of JP could significantly improve the lymphocyte proliferation in the spleen and decrease the proportion of CD3+ and CD4+ and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ in cyclophosphamide-induced mice in a dose-dependent manner. JP treatment also increased the levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IFN-γ, and TNF-α in serum and the intestine, and the improvement effects were proportional to the dose of JP. Similarly, JP significantly increased the levels of IgA and SIgA, as well as the expressions of Claudin-1 and Occludin in the intestine. Particularly, the expressions of Claudin-1 and Occludin were the best in the M-JP group. Furthermore, JP positively regulated the gut microbiota as indicated by the enriched microbiota diversity. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes was significantly decreased by JP, while that of Bacteroidetes was increased by JP treatment. More importantly, the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes was significantly increased. And a high dose of JP is the most effective. At the genus level, the abundances of the Bacteroidales-S24-7-group, Lachnospiraceae, Alloprevotella, Alistipes and Bacteroides were increased by JP treatment. These results provided evidence for the regulating effect of JP on the peripheral immunity and intestinal barrier function in cyclophosphamide-induced hypoimmune mice.
