Abstract
In this study, we examined the impact of geniposide on the innate immunity of the mud crab Scylla paramamosain, specifically in relation to WSSV infection. Through the use of in vitro cell culture experiments, we assessed the effects of geniposide on various parameters of hemocyte activity in S. paramamosain. Our findings revealed that high doses of geniposide inhibited hemocyte growth, with an optimal dose of 100 mg/kg determined. Additionally, we observed that geniposide increased the total hemocyte counts in S. paramamosain following WSSV infection. Geniposide also enhanced the enzymatic activities in hemolymph following treatment. The enzymes affected by geniposide encompassed ACP (acid phosphatase), POD (phenol oxidase catalase), PO (phenoloxidase), SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), and LZM (lysozyme). Furthermore, the activities of ACP, POD, PO, and LZM were also observed to increase subsequent to infection with WSSV. Notably, geniposide was found to enhance the phagocytosis of V. alginolyticus within the hemocytes. Geniposide can reduce hemocyte apoptosis rates after treatment, as well as hemocytes infected with WSSV. Furthermore, geniposide treatment significantly up-regulated the expression level of Myosin, but expression levels of Astakine, C-type lectin (CTL), STAT, JAK, proPO, minichromosome maintenance protein (MCM7), caspase-3 and crustin were down-regulated in the hemocytes. Additionally, geniposide treatment inhibited WSSV replication in hemocytes of S. paramamosain, and enhanced the survival rates of mud crabs following WSSV infection. These experimental results provide evidence that geniposide can improve the immune response by regulating humoral immunity and cellular immunity, and enhance pathogen resistance in S. paramamosain.

Abstract
Sargassum fusiforme has a wide range of active constituents (such as polysaccharides, sterols, polyphenols, terpenes, amino acids, trace elements, etc.) and is an economically important brown algae with a long history. In recent years, S. fusiforme has been intensively studied and has attracted wide attention in the fields of agriculture, environment, medicine, and functional food. In this review, we reviewed the current research status of S. fusiforme at home and abroad over the past decade by searching Web of science, Google Scholar, and other databases, and structurally analyzed the active components of S. fusiforme, and on this basis, we focused on summarizing the cutting-edge research and scientific issues on the role of various active substances in S. fusiforme in exerting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, antiviral antibacterial, and anticoagulant effects. The mechanisms by which different substances exert active effects were further summarized by exploring different experimental models and are shown visually. It provides a reference to promote further development and comprehensive utilization of S. fusiforme resources.

Abstract
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with a molecular formula C15H10O7. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-apoptotic effects in animals. We used red claw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) infected with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) to investigate quercetin's effects on innate immunity of crustaceans. Quercetin supplementation significantly reduced the mortality of crayfish caused by WSSV infection and the number of VP28 copies in WSSV-infected crayfish. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that dietary quercetin supplementation increased the expression of immune-related genes, like JAK, STAT and ALF. Quercetin supplementation affected the activity of six immune-related enzymes and increased the total number of hemocytes in crayfish. It also significantly reduced the rate of hemocyte apoptosis in both WSSV-infected and uninfected crayfish. These results demonstrate the potential for commercial use of quercetin for the prevention of WSSV disease in crustaceans.

Abstract
In this study, we extracted the polysaccharides from Hizikia fusiforme (HFPs) and evaluated their effects on the immune response of the mud crab Scylla paramamosain. Compositional analysis revealed that HFPs were composed mainly of mannuronic acid (49.05%) and fucose (22.29%) as sulfated polysaccharides, and the sugar chain structure was β-type. These results indicated that HFPs have potential antioxidant and immunostimulation activity in vivo or in vitro assays. Through this research, we found that HFPs inhibited viral replication in white spot syndrome virus (WSSV)-infected crabs and promoted phagocytosis of Vibrio alginolyticus by hemocytes. Quantitative PCR results showed that HFPs up-regulated the expression levels of astakine, crustin, myosin, MCM7, STAT, TLR, JAK, CAP, and p53 in crab hemocytes. HFPs also promoted the activities of superoxide dismutase and acid phosphatase and the hemolymph antioxidant activities of crabs. HFPs maintained peroxidase activity after WSSV challenge, thereby providing protection against oxidative damage caused by the virus. HFPs also promoted apoptosis of hemocytes after WSSV infection. In addition, HFPs significantly enhanced the survival rate of WSSV-infected crabs. All results confirmed that HFPs improved the innate immunity of S. paramamosain by enhancing the expression of antimicrobial peptides, antioxidant enzyme activity, phagocytosis, and apoptosis. Therefore, HFPs have potential for use as therapeutic or preventive agents to regulate the innate immunity of mud crabs and protect them against microbial infection.

Abstract
Natural plant polysaccharide as immune modulator is considered an effective strategy for healthy aquaculture to reduce medicine treatment. Salvia miltiorrhiza polysaccharides (SMP) had applications to regulate immune activity and enhance antioxidant in vertebrates, but the potential function has been rarely reported in crustaceans. In this study, the immunological effects of SMP on hemocytes of Procambarus clarkii were analyzed. Results showed that total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), phenoloxidase (PO) activity and respiratory burst were up-regulated after SMP treatment. After high-throughput sequencing, 2170 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) including 1294 up-regulated and 876 down-regulated genes were identified. KEGG function enrichment analysis indicated that DEGs are involved in crustaceans cellular immune-related signaling pathways, including lysosome, phagosome and endocytosis. Transcriptome mining and qRT-PCR showed that SMP up-regulated humoral immunity factors gene expression. Diets supplemented with 0.8% SMP significantly up-regulated the total number of hemocytes (THC), T-SOD and PO activity, improved the survival of crayfish after Citrobacter freundii infection. This study suggested that SMP could improve the cellular and humoral immunity of P. clarkii. Furthermore, this finding supplied a molecular foundation for further comprehending the immunopotentiator effects of plant polysaccharides in crustaceans.

Abstract
The study was conducted to evaluate the extruded and pelleting feed production on growth performance, intestinal histology and microbiome analysis of juvenile red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. Crayfish were fed either pelleted or extruded feeds that were made using the same formula. Crayfish fed extruded feed had a lower feed conversion ratio, as well as significantly higher levels of trypsin and amylase (p < 0.05) than those fed pelleted feed. However, other growth indices and the activity of lipase were not significantly influenced by the feed processing technique (p > 0.05). In comparison with the pelleted feed group, the lamina propria thickness of crayfish fed extruded feed was significantly lower (p < 0.05). Additionally, the abundance of intestinal microbiota in the extruded feed group was higher than that in the pelleted feed group. The dominant phyla in the intestine of both groups were Proteobacteria, Tenericutes, and Firmicutes, and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria in the extruded feed group was significantly higher than that in the pelleted feed group (p < 0.05). These results revealed that P. clarkii fed extruded feed had higher feed utilization and better intestinal health.

Abstract
Coumarin is a natural compound from plants with the molecular formula C9H6O2. Cherax quadricarinatus (red claw crayfish) is an aquaculture species exhibiting high economic efficiency and quality that is mainly distributed and cultivated in the southeast provinces in China. In order to identify an effective herbal immunopotentiator against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection, this study examined the effect of coumarin as a feed additive in protecting C. quadricarinatus against WSSV infection. The expression of immune-related genes and WSSV copies were analyzed by Q-PCR. Challenge experiments were conducted to analyze the survival rate and determine the optimal concentration of coumarin. The Phenoloxidase activity (PO), Acid phosphatase (ACP) and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) activity and lysozyme activity were also analyzed. Total hemocyte count (THC) and apoptosis rate were determined by flow cytometry. The WSSV challenge results showed that 40 mg/kg coumarin reduced the mortality of C. quadricarinatus and delayed the WSSV infection process. Further investigation showed that coumarin treatment had a positive effect on the important immunity-related parameters THC, ACP activity, SOD activity, LZM and PO activity. Coumarin up-regulated the expression of proPO, JAK, STAT, ALF, Hsp70 and down-regulated the expression of caspase at the mRNA level. After WSSV infection, the hemocyte apoptosis rate was lower in the 40 mg/kg coumarin + WSSV group compared with the WSSV only group. These data illustrate that coumarin enhances innate immunity in C. quadricarinatus and exhibits a protective effect against WSSV infection by reducing the number of WSSV copies and slowing the process of infection, which provides a potential theoretical basis for studies of coumarin as a new aquatic feed additive in crustacean aquaculture.

Abstract
Aquaculture offers a promising source of economic and healthy protein for human consumption, which can improve wellbeing. Viral diseases are the most serious type of diseases affecting aquatic animals and a major obstacle to the development of the aquaculture industry. In the background of antibiotic-free farming, the development and application of antibiotic alternatives has become one of the most important issues in aquaculture. In recent years, many medicinal plants and their active pharmaceutical ingredients have been found to be effective in the treatment and prevention of viral diseases in aquatic animals. Compared with chemical drugs and antibiotics, medicinal plants have fewer side-effects, produce little drug resistance, and exhibit low toxicity to the water environment. Most medicinal plants can effectively improve the growth performance of aquatic animals; thus, they are becoming increasingly valued and widely used in aquaculture. The present review summarizes the promising antiviral activities of medicinal plants and their active pharmaceutical ingredients against aquatic viruses. Furthermore, it also explains their possible mechanisms of action and possible implications in the prevention or treatment of viral diseases in aquaculture. This article could lay the foundation for the future development of harmless drugs for the prevention and control of viral disease outbreaks in aquaculture.

Abstract
In recent years, the use of natural products with immune-stimulating and antimicrobial properties has attracted increasing attention in aquaculture researches. In our study, the effect of diet supplemented with quercetin, a flavonoid commonly found in some types of plants substance on the innate immune response and disease resistance in crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is reported. It was found that dietary 40 mg/kg quercetin significantly reduced the mortality of crayfish and WSSV copy number after WSSV challenge. Dietary quercetin increased catalase (CAT), and lysozyme (LZM) activity in crayfish. Dietary quercetin increased the expression of NF-κB, anti-lipopolysaccharide factor (ALF) and toll-like receptor (TLR) genes in crayfish. The apoptosis rate of hemocyte was increased by quercetin supplement in crayfish. Our results suggest that dietary quercetin may affect the innate immunity of crayfish and protect crayfish from WSSV infection.
