Abstract
The intestinal microbiota interacts with the host and plays an important role in the immune response, digestive physiology, and regulation of body functions. In addition, it is also well documented that the intestinal microbiota of aquatic animals are closely related to their growth rate. However, whether it resulted in different sizes of crayfish in the rice-crayfish coculture model remained vague. Here, we analyzed the intestinal microbiota characteristics of crayfish of three sizes in the same typical rice-crayfish coculture field by high-throughput sequencing technology combined with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and enzyme activity, investigating the relationship between intestinal microbiota in crayfish and water and sediments. The results showed that the dominant intestinal microbiota of crayfish was significantly different between the large size group (BS), normal size group (NS), and small size group (SS), where Bacteroides and Candidatus_Bacilloplasma contributed to the growth of crayfish by facilitating food digestion through cellulolysis, which might be one of the potential factors affecting the difference in sizes. Follow-up experiments confirmed that the activity of lipase (LPS) and protease was higher in BS, and the relative expression of development-related genes, including alpha-amylase (α-AMY), myocyte-specific enhancer factor 2a (MEF2a), glutathione reductase (GR), chitinase (CHI), and ecdysone receptor (EcR), in BS was significantly higher than that in SS. These findings revealed the intestinal microbiota characteristics of crayfish of different sizes and their potential impact on growth, which is valuable for managing and manipulating the intestinal microbiota in crayfish to achieve high productivity in practice. Abstract
Studies have shown that high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) processing and chlorogenic acid (CA) treatment can effectively reduce food allergenicity. We hypothesize that these novel processing techniques can help tackle crayfish allergy and examined the impact and mechanism of HHP (300 MPa, 15 min) and CA (CA:tropomyosin = 1:4000, 15 min) on the allergenicity of crayfish tropomyosin. Our results revealed that CA, rather than HHP, effectively reduced tropomyosin's allergenicity, as evident in the alleviation of allergic symptoms in a food allergy mouse model. Spectroscopy and molecular docking analyses demonstrated that CA could reduce the allergenicity of tropomyosin by covalent or non-covalent binding, altering its secondary structure (2.1 % decrease in α-helix; 1.9 % increase in β-fold) and masking tropomyosin's linear epitopes. Moreover, CA-treated tropomyosin potentially induced milder allergic reactions by up-regulating TLR8. While our results supported the efficacy of CA in alleviating crayfish allergy, further exploration is needed to determine clinical effectiveness.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the influences of gamma-poly glutamic acid (γ-PGA) (1, 2, 3, and 4 %) to see which could outperform conventional cryoprotectant mixture (4 % sorbitol + 4 % sucrose) on cooked crayfish properties, such as physicochemical, textural qualities, oxidation reaction, water distributions, and microstructure integrity, during different freeze-thaw cycles. Crayfish quality characteristics improved significantly as γ-PGA concentration increased compared to control samples.Adding γ-PGA 4 % reduced the carbonyl content from 4.20 to 3.00 nmol/ mg protein during fluctuation-1 (F1), and from 4.15 to 2.80 nmol/ mg protein during fluctuation-2 (F2) compared to control samples. Furthermore, it increased the total sulfhydryl content from 4.15 and 4.76 to 6.19 and 6.47 mol/105 g protein during F1 and F2 and after five freeze-thaw cycles (FTC). This suggests that this concentration was more effective at controlling protein changes than other concentrations. γ-PGA generally enhanced the water-holding capacity by preventing protein denaturation and limiting ice crystal recrystallization. As a result, microstructure stability was evident, texture degradation was avoided, and the crayfish's color was preserved.

Abstract
Imidacloprid enters the water environment through rainfall and causes harm to aquatic crustaceans. However, the potential chronic toxicity mechanism of imidacloprid in crayfish has not been comprehensively studied. In this study, red claw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) were exposed to 11.76, 35.27, or 88.17 μg/L imidacloprid for 30 days, and changes in the physiology and biochemistry, gut microbiota, and transcriptome of C. quadricarinatus and the interaction between imidacloprid, gut microbiota, and genes were studied. Imidacloprid induced oxidative stress and decreased growth performance in crayfish. Imidacloprid exposure caused hepatopancreas damage and decreased serum immune enzyme activity. Hepatopancreatic and plasma acetylcholine decreased significantly in the 88.17 μg/L group. Imidacloprid reduced the diversity of the intestinal flora, increased the abundance of harmful flora, and disrupted the microbiota function. Transcriptomic analysis showed that the number of up-and-down-regulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) increased significantly with increasing concentrations of imidacloprid. DEG enrichment analyses indicated that imidacloprid inhibits neurotransmitter transduction and immune responses and disrupts energy metabolic processes. Crayfish could alleviate imidacloprid stress by regulating antioxidant and detoxification-related genes. A high correlation was revealed between GST, HSPA1s, and HSP90 and the composition of gut microorganisms in crayfish under imidacloprid stress. This study highlights the negative effects and provides detailed sequencing data from transcriptome and gut microbiota to enhance our understanding of the molecular toxicity of imidacloprid in crustaceans.

Abstract
Iron is a common and essential element for maintaining life in bacteria, plants and animals and is found in soil, fresh waters and marine waters; however, over exposure is toxic to organisms. Iron is used in electron transport complexes within mitochondria as well as a co-factor in many essential proteins. It is also established that iron accumulation in the central nervous system in mammals is associated with various neurological disorders. Ample studies have investigated the long-term effects of iron overload in the nervous system. However, its acute effects in nervous tissue and additional organ systems warrant further studies. This study investigates the effects of iron overload on development, behavior, survival, cardiac function, and glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the Drosophila melanogaster. Additionally, physiological responses in crayfish were examined following Fe3+ exposure. Fe3+ reduced neuronal excitability in proprioceptive neurons in a crayfish model. Thus, Fe3+ may block stretch activated channels (SACs) as well as voltage-gated Na+ channels. Exposure also rapidly reduces synaptic transmission but does not block ionotropic glutamatergic receptors, suggesting a blockage of pre-synaptic voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in both crustacean and Drosophila models. The effects are partly reversible with acute exposure, indicating the cells are not rapidly damaged. This study is relevant in demonstrating the effects of Fe3+ on various physiological functions in different organisms in order to further understand the acute and long-term consequences of overload.

Abstract
Crayfish rely on their chemosensory system for many essential behaviours including finding food, finding mates, and to recognize individuals. Copper can impair chemosensation in crayfish at low concentrations; however, it is not clear if the effect is ameliorated once copper is removed. To better understand the effect of and recovery from copper exposure in crayfish, we exposed Northern clearwater crayfish (Faxonius propinquus) to 31.3 [Formula: see text] copper for 24 h and measured the response of the crayfish to a food cue. The crayfish were then placed into clean water to depurate for an 24 h. The results demonstrated that the crayfish did not respond to a food cue if they had been exposed to copper, but showed a full response after a 24 h recovery period without copper. Higher concentrations of copper have shown a much longer-term effect in rusty crayfish (Faxonius rustics), indicating there is a concentration where the copper is causing longer-term damage instead of just impairing chemosensation. These results highlight the fact that even though contaminants like copper can have profound effects at low concentrations, by removing the contaminants the effect can be ameliorated.

Abstract
Disease outbreaks in crustacean aquaculture caused by opportunistic and obligate pathogens cause severe economic losses to the industry. Antibiotics are frequently used as prophylactic treatments worldwide, although its overuse and misuse has led to microbial resistance, which has driven the search for novel molecules with immunostimulant and antibacterial activities. Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) and double-stranded (ds)RNAs constitute promising immunostimulants in the fight against infectious diseases in aquaculture. Scientists have made significant progress in testing these molecules in aquatic organisms as potential candidates for replacing conventional antibiotics. However, most studies have been conducted in teleost fish, thus little is known about the immunostimulatory effects in crustaceans, especially in freshwater crayfishes. Consequently, in the present work, we evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of the AMP Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Polypeptide (PACAP) and high molecular weight (HMW) Poly (I:C) in the northern clearwater crayfish Orconectes propinquus. Two bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effects of different doses of PACAP and Poly (I:C) HMW, different administration routes, as well as the effects of the combined treatment on the crayfish immune system. Results showed the immunostimulatory role of PACAP and Poly (I:C) HMW with effects depending on the dose, the site of injection and the treatment assessed. These findings offer new insights into the crayfish immune system and contribute to the development of effective broad-spectrum immune therapies in aquaculture.

Abstract
Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), a novel class of persistent pollutants, are widely distributed in the environment, and their potential health risks have garnered significant global attention in recent years. Crayfish is a popular freshwater crustacean product in China primarily sourced from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The purpose of this study was to investigate the exposure levels of OPFRs in crayfish, assess the health and safety risks associated with crayfish consumption, and explore the bioaccumulation of OPFRs in environmental water and sediment on crayfish. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was employed to analyze 7 common OPFRs in 106 crayfish samples and 76 environmental samples. The results revealed that OPFRs were detected at a high frequency of 100 % in crayfish, with tripropyl phosphate (TPP) being the predominant pollutant found in edible portions while also exhibiting secondary contamination within the crayfish food chain. Monte Carlo modeling combined with @risk risk assessment software demonstrated that TPP present in crayfish muscles had the most substantial impact on health effects, however, overall OPFR exposure did not pose significant risks to human health. Furthermore, analysis of OPFRs bioenrichment ability indicated that crayfish predominantly accumulated these compounds within their edible parts from surrounding environmental water sources, particularly highlighting TPP's potential for bioaccumulation.

Abstract
Red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkia) is an exposed species to heavy metals due to their lifestyle of direct contact with sediments. Based on the complete crayfish industry, we focus on the presence of heavy metals in crayfish from different circulation links, which provides a new idea for the investigation of heavy metals in food. To analyze the exposure levels of heavy metals in crayfish during aquaculture and circulation, the five elements (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr, Cu) in crayfish from 126 sampling sites were investigated. Cultured environmental samples were collected for Spearman correlation analysis. Monte Carlo simulation was used to analyze the uncertain health risks of heavy metals in crayfish. The results indicated that the average heavy metal concentrations in crayfish were all below the limit threshold values. The hepatopancreas was the main target organ for heavy metal accumulation (Cd: 0.3132 mg/kg; Pb: 0.0258 mg/kg; Hg: 0.0072 mg/kg; Cr: 0.1720 mg/kg; Cu: 10.6816 mg/kg). The positive correlation of heavy metal content between crayfish and sediments was not significant under the crayfish-rice coculture model. The 95th HI values for adults and children ranged from 0.022 to 0.042 and 0.071 to 0.137, well below 1, indicating that heavy metals do not pose a noncarcinogenic risk to humans. The potential carcinogenic risk of Cd and Cr in crayfish should be taken seriously, as the 95th CR values for children have reached 4.299 × 10-5 and 6.509 × 10-5, respectively.

Abstract
Peroxinectin, which has both peroxidase and cell adhesion activities, is crucial for invertebrate innate immune responses. In this study, we first cloned the full-length cDNA of Procambarus clarkii Peroxinectin (denoted as Pc-Px) and evaluated its immune roles. The Pc-Px cDNA had 2460 base pairs (bp) and 819 amino acid residues, including peroxidase domain and a putative integrin-binding motif. Pc-Px tissue expression was found to be ubiquitous in all examined tissues under normal physiological conditions. Pc-Px mRNA levels were highest in hemocytes, followed by gills and heart, and were lowest in the gut. The LPS, PGN, and Poly I:C treatment significantly up-regulated the transcript level of Pc-Px gene, but the expression trends were different after the microbials component treatments. Pc-Px knockdown using double-stranded RNA altered the transcription profiles of various immune-related genes in hepatopancreas of P. clarkii. Taken together, Pc-Px is an important component of immune system that likely to modulate immune function of P. clarkii via regulating immune-associated genes.

Abstract
The freshwater crayfish, Procambarus clarkii is an excellent aquatic animal model that is highly adaptable and tolerant. P. clarkii is widely used as a toxicity model to study various pharmaceutical exposure. This animal model has complex behavioral traits and is considered sensitive to environmental changes, making it an excellent candidate to study psychoactive drugs based on a behavioral approach. However, up to now, most behavioral studies on crayfish use manual observation and scoring that require panelists. In this study, we aim to develop an automation pipeline to analyze crayfish behavior automatically. We use a deep-learning approach to label body parts in multiple crayfish, and based on the trajectory results, the intra- or inter-individual crayfish were calculated. Reliable and fast results of several behavior endpoints in multiple crayfish were retrieved. We then validated the detection performance of numerous crayfish in specific gender groups (male-male and female-female). Based on the result, the male crayfish displayed significantly higher aggression than females. We also tested the antidepressant exposure on this animal model to evaluate the psychoactive effects of this drug. As male crayfish display more distinct agonistic behavior than females, we exposed them to sertraline (SRT) 1 ppb for 7 and 14 days. It was revealed that sertraline was able to alter several behavioral endpoints in crayfish. Significant increases in extend claw ratio, total distance moved, average speed, and rapid movement were displayed in sertraline-exposed crayfish but decreased interaction time and longest interaction time. In addition, SRT 14 days exposure could atler the aggressiveness and bold behavior In the present method, DeepLabCut (DLC) has been utilized to analyze the locomotion behavior of multiple crayfish. This established method provides rapid and accurate ecotoxicity measurements using freshwater crayfish, which beneficient and applicable for environmental research.

Abstract
The narrow-clawed crayfish is a crayfish species that was accidentally introduced into the ecosystem of Lake Sevan in the 1980s. Soon it became one of the most preferred fisheries in the lake and an important link in the food chain by successfully replacing the endemic fish subspecies Sevan khramicarp (Capoeta sevangi, De Filippi, 1865) in the chain of detritivores. However, recently, the stock declines dramatically, associated with two main threats: the impact of burn-spot disease and an increase in fishing pressure on its population. To estimate the state of population under multiple stress conditions, we investigated the dynamics of stock, the size/age and sex structure, the fecundity, and the health status of the population. A comparative analysis of oxidative stress biomarkers (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase activities and reduced glutathione, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance contents) showed significant differences between healthy and infected individuals. Another indirect effect of the disease, which probably leads to a decrease in the stock, was an increase in the proportion of immature females. Also, we observed some decrease in the infection rate along with the decline in the density of crayfish. However, stock reduction and some changes in the population may also be caused by a strong bloom of cyanobacteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biodiversity is generally reduced when non-native species invade an ecosystem. Invasive crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, populate California freshwater streams, and in the Santa Monica Mountains (Los Angeles, USA), their introduction has led to trophic cascades due to omnivorous feeding behavior and a rapid rate of population growth. The native California newt, Taricha torosa, possesses a neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX), that affects freshwater animal behavior. Given P. clarkii has a limited evolutionary history with TTX, we hypothesized that TTX may affect crayfish feeding behaviors. To determine if TTX affects P. clarkii behavior, we measured cumulative movement and various feeding behaviors of P. clarkii exposed to (i) waterborne, ecologically realistic concentrations of TTX (~ 3.0 × 10- 8 moles/L), (ii) an anuran chemical cue to account for intraguild cues, or (iii) a T. torosa chemical cue with quantitated TTX in it (~ 6.2 × 10- 8 moles/L). RESULTS We found that the presence of TTX in any form significantly reduced crayfish movement and decreased the amount of food consumed over time. Crayfish responses to the anuran treatment did not significantly differ from controls. CONCLUSION Our laboratory results show that naturally occurring neurotoxin from native California newts limits invasive crayfish foraging and feeding rates, which may play a role in preserving local stream ecosystems by limiting invasive crayfish behaviors that are detrimental to biodiversity.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between clawless body mass (CBM) and total mercury concentration (THg) in male and female crayfish captured from three different sites in the Columbia River Basin: the Spokane River, Boise River and Hangman Creek. It was found that the allometric relationships for THg in male and female crayfish did not differ from one another at any of the three locations (Spokane River: ANCOVA, F1,49 = 0.001, p = 0.63; Hangman Creek: ANCOVA, F1,73 = 0.007, p = 0.93; Boise River: ANCOVA, F1,38 = 0.02, p = 0.88. Furthermore, the slopes of the CBM and THg regression lines were not significantly different from one site to the next (ANCOVA, F2,166 = 1.5 p = 0.24), despite considerable differences in mean mass-adjusted THg across locations (Spokane River: 26.8 ± 2.6; Hangman Creek: 75.2 ± 2.1; Boise River: 99.0 ± 2.9). For signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) from the Columbia River Basin, size and sex standardization can be accomplished with a single linear relationship.

Abstract
Crayfishes are among the most widely introduced freshwater taxa and can have extensive ecological impacts. Knowledge of the parasites crayfish harbor is limited, yet co-invasion of parasites is a significant risk associated with invasions. In this study, we describe a novel microsporidium, Cambaraspora faxoni n. sp. (Glugeida: Tuzetiidae), from two crayfish hosts in the Midwest USA, Faxonius virilis and Faxonius rusticus. We also expand the known host range of Cambaraspora floridanus to include Procambarus spiculifer. Cambaraspora faxoni infects muscle and heart tissue of F. rusticus and develops within a sporophorous vesicle. The mature spore measures 3.22 ± 0.14 μm in length and 1.45 ± 0.13 μm in width, with 8-9 turns of the polar filament. SSU sequencing indicates the isolates from F. virilis and F. rusticus were identical (100%) and 93.49% similar to C. floridanus, supporting the erection of a new species within the Cambaraspora genus. The novel parasite was discovered within the native range of F. rusticus (Ohio, USA) and within a native congeneric (F. virilis) in the invasive range of F. rusticus (Wisconsin, USA). Faxonius virilis is invasive in other regions. This new parasite could have been introduced to Wisconsin with F. rusticus or it may be a generalist species with a broad distribution. In either case, this parasite infects two crayfish species that have been widely introduced to new drainages throughout North America and could have future effects on invasion dynamics or impacts.

Abstract
Doxycycline is an important medicine in aquaculture for treating fish diseases. However, its excess use causes residue exceeding to threaten human health. So, this study aimed to estimate a reliable withdrawal time (WT) of doxycycline (DC) in crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) based on statistical approaches and conduct a risk assessment for human health in the natural environment. Samples were collected at predetermined time points and determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. A novel statistical method was used to process the data of residue concentration. The homogeneity and linearity of the regressed line of data were evaluated by Bartlett's, Cochran's, and F tests. Outliers were excluded by establishing the standardized residual versus their cumulative frequency distribution on a normal probability scale. The calculated WT was 43 days in muscle of crayfish based on China and European stipulations. After 43 days, estimated daily intakes of DC were ranged from 0.022 to 0.052 µg/kg/d. Hazard Quotients were ranged from 0.007 to 0.014, which were far less than 1. These results indicated that established WT could avoid health risks for humans resulting from DC's residue in crayfish.

Abstract
The intestine-associated microbiota in crustaceans are considered a key element for maintaining homeostasis and health within the organisms. Recently, efforts have been made to characterize bacterial communities of freshwater crustaceans, including crayfish, and their interplay with the host's physiology and the aquatic environments. As a result, it has become evident that crayfish intestinal microbial communities display high plasticity, which is strongly influenced by both the diet, especially in aquaculture, and the environment. Moreover, studies regarding the characterization and distribution of the microbiota along the gut portions led to the discovery of bacteria with probiotic potential. The addition of these microorganisms to their food has shown a limited positive correlation with the growth and development of crayfish freshwater species. Finally, there is evidence that infections, particularly those from viral etiology, lead to low diversity and abundance of the intestinal microbial communities. In the present article, we have reviewed data on the crayfish' intestinal microbiota, highlighting the most frequently observed taxa and emphasizing the dominance of phylum within this community. In addition, we have also searched for evidence of microbiome manipulation and its potential impact on productive parameters, and discussed the role of the microbiome in the regulation of diseases presentation, and environmental perturbations.

Abstract
Contaminant concentrations often presented left censorship that below the limit of detection (LOD), which may contain true zero values because of no residue. In this study, we analyzed the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr) in 391 crayfish samples collected from 24 provinces of China, modelled the concentrations with two different models in a Bayesian framework, and evaluated health risk by estimating the target hazard quotient (THQ). The highest concentration was associated with Cr in Northwest China (0.1753 ± 0.1520 mg/kg w. w.), and the minimum concentration was Cd in Southwest China (0.0052 ± 0.0144 mg/kg w. w.), all heavy metal concentrations were below their safety limits. The posterior means of not detect rates P0 of Pb, Cd, Hg, As, and Cr obtained with two models were both nearly equal to the observed not detect rates (51.15%, 36.83%, 27.37%, 64.71%, and 43.73%, respectively). The posterior probabilistic density lines for Pb, Hg, and Cd concentrations obtained with two models were similar, and fitted the empirical distributions well. The posterior density lines of THQs showed that the non-carcinogenic risk of As and Hg were significant high. Moreover, Bayesian approach presented a better understanding of the percentage of population exposed to potential risk.

Abstract
Primary burrowing crayfishes face high extinction risk, but are challenging to study, manage, and conserve due to their difficult-to-sample habitat (i.e., terrestrial burrows) and low population densities. We apply here a variety of methods to characterize the distribution, habitat associations, and conservation status of the Boston Mountains Crayfish Cambarus causeyi (Reimer, 1966), an endemic burrowing crayfish found only in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, United States. We used species distribution modeling (SDM) on historic occurrence records to characterize the distribution and macro-scale habitat associations of this species. We then ground-truthed SDM predictions with conventional sampling, modeled fine-scale habitat associations with generalized linear models (GLM), and lastly developed and tested an environmental DNA (eDNA) assay for this species in comparison to conventional sampling. This represents, to our knowledge, the first successful eDNA assay for a terrestrial burrowing crayfish. Our MaxEnt-derived SDM found a strong effect of average annual precipitation on the historic distribution of C. causeyi, which occurred most frequently at locations with moderately high average annual precipitation (140-150 cm/yr) within our study region. Cambarus causeyi was difficult to detect by conventional sampling in 2019 and 2020, found at only 9 of 51 sites (17.6%) sampled by searching for and manually excavating crayfish burrows. Surprisingly, habitat suitability predicted from our MaxEnt models was not associated with contemporary C. causeyi occurrences per GLMs. Instead, C. causeyi presence was negatively associated with both sandy soils and the presence of other burrowing crayfish species. Poor SDM performance in this instance was likely caused by the omission of high resolution fine-scale habitat data (e.g., soils) and biotic interactions from MaxEnt models. Finally, our eDNA assay detected C. causeyi from six of 25 sites (24.0%) sampled in 2020, out-performing conventional surveys by burrow excavation for this species. Given the difficulty of studying primary burrowing crayfishes and their high conservation need, we propose that eDNA may become an increasingly important monitoring tool for C. causeyi and similar species.

Abstract
The enrichment and health risk assessment of trace elements in crayfish on a national scale are significant for food safety due to the rapidly expanding crayfish consumption in China. In the present study, 4709 samples were extracted from databases to explore the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of trace elements in crayfish. Due to the variance in the background value of trace elements, the level of trace elements varies by region. Additionally, levels of As and Cr in crayfish increased with the promotion of intensive rice-crayfish coculture in China. Health risk assessment results revealed that trace elements may cause non-carcinogenic risk for crayfish consumption for adults and children from the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the main risk was from As and Hg. The cancer risk values of As for children and adults in Zhejiang, Anhui, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Shandong provinces were above the allowable value. There is concern about the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk of consuming crayfish containing trace elements in some areas in China. Therefore, the results can serve as a critical reference for policy purposes in China. In addition, it is recommended that further research and assessment on crayfish consumption are required.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a novel class of emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) owing to their environmental persistence and bioaccumulation. Red swamp crayfish is a major source of exposure to PFASs, while the dietary intake of PFASs from crayfish is still unclear. We investigated the concentrations of PFASs in 130 batches of crayfish and 100 environmental samples from Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River Delta. Seven Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), 3 Perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs), and 6:2 Cl-PFESA were analyzed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Meanwhile, PFASs exposure levels were examined concretely in four tissues of crayfish and different circulation links. The average daily intake (ADI) risk model was used to evaluate the human health risk of consuming crayfish and suggested that the risk of PFASs exposure is at a low level.

Abstract
The bacterial storage compound poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a potential bio-control agent in aquaculture. It has been reported that PHB benefit to the survival and growth, and improve their immunity of aquatic animals. However, the cellular and molecular regulation mechanisms of PHB in immunity process remain unclear. This study investigated the immune mechanism of hemocytes regulated by Halomonas-PHB (PHB-HM) and PHB monomer 3-HB. Red claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus was used as the experimental animal in cytological study. Fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry (FCM) analysis indicated that PHB-HM labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) could be engulfed by granulocytes (Gs) and semi-granulocytes (SGs) upon in vitro incubation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) further showed the ongoing degradation of PHB granules inside Gs and SGs after the injection of PHB-HM into crayfish sinus, but phagocytosis of PHB-HM by hyalinocyte (H) was not observed. Therefore, Gs and SGs are considered the main effector cells of cellular immunity induced by PHB-HM, and SGs likely played a particular important role in this process. To study the biosafety and molecular mechanism of PHB monomer 3-HB, hemocyte viability and expression of the related genes were determined after being exposed to 0-1 mg/mL of 3-HB, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) was used as the pathogenic bacterium. The results confirmed that 3-HB had no toxic effect on hemocytes by means of cell viability assay, and supplementation with 1 mg/mL of 3-HB suppressed the growth rate of VP in TSB medium. Moreover, injection of 3-HB into the blood sinus of crayfish remarkably improved the phagocytic rate of Gs and SGs on VP. Furthermore, transcriptome assay was designed to illuminate the molecular mechanism of 3-HB regulation using red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii as experimental animals. RNA-seq analysis and qRT-PCR verification revealed that the microtubule and cytoskeleton-related genes were high expressed 3 h after 3-HB injection, indicating both genes might involve in building up the innate immunity. In summary, bacterial storage PHB could be phagocytosed by main effector blood cells and likely to be degraded within the cells. 3-HB helped the crayfish resistant to pathogens through improving phagocytosis, suppressing the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and increasing the expression of microtubule-related genes. The findings in this work provide cytological and molecular evidence which will facilitate the application of PHB and 3-HB as immune-control agents in farming of aquatic animals.

Abstract
To improve the quality of cooked and frozen crayfish after repeated freeze-thaw cycles, the effects of alginate oligosaccharide (1 %, w/v) with ultrasound-assisted (40 W, 3 min) soaking (AUS) on the physicochemical properties were investigated. The AUS samples improved water-holding capacity with 19.47 % higher than the untreated samples. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance confirmed that mobile water (T22) in the samples after 5 times of freeze-thaw cycles was reduced by 13.02 % and 29.34 % with AUS and without treatment, correspondingly; and with AUS and without treatment, average size of the ice crystals was around 90.26 μm2 and 113.73 μm2, and average diameter of the ice crystals was 5.83 μm and 8.14 μm, respectively; furthermore, it enhanced the solubility and zeta potential, lowered the surface hydrophobicity, reduced the particle size, and maintained the secondary and tertiary structures of myofibrillar protein (MP) after repeated freeze-thawing. Gel electrophoresis revealed that the AUS treatment mitigated the denaturation of MPs. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the AUS treatment preserved the structure of the tissue. These findings demonstrated that the AUS treatment could enhance the water retention and physicochemical properties of protein within aquatic meat products during temperature fluctuations..

Abstract
Crayfish is one of the most important freshwater aquaculture species in China. The potential risks of crayfish consumption caused by environmental microplastic pollution have attracted much attention. In this study, a total of 72 crayfish samples were exposed to the microplastic concentrations of 1 mg/L, 3 mg/L, and 9 mg/L for 7, 14, and 28 days, and microplastic contamination levels in crayfish were then explored by laser confocal micro-Raman (LCM-Raman) imaging and scanning electron microscope (SEM). LCM-Raman imaging showed better performance in microplastics identification. Besides, the average percentage of the contaminated area in visualized LCM-Raman images was used to quantitatively assess contamination levels. Following 28 days of exposure to 9 mg/L microplastics, microplastic accumulation reached about 13,000 particles per crayfish. The results confirmed that LCM-Raman imaging combined with image processing technology could be used to construct a high-performance analytical strategy for the assessment of microplastic contamination in crayfish.

Abstract
Glycerol monolaurate (GML), one of the medium-chain fatty acid esters, is often used as an emulsifier or preservative. Its biological functions include antibacterial and antiviral activities. In this study, we examined the effects of dietary GML on the resistance of the red claw crayfish to WSSV infection. Crayfish fed with 4 g/kg GML showed higher survival rate and lower WSSV copy numbers than the control after WSSV infection. A RT-qPCR analysis showed that GML supplementation enhanced the expression of immune-related genes, especially JAK and caspase. Our data indicate that GML affects the immune parameters of crayfish, including the total hemocyte counts and phenoloxidase, acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, lysozyme, and peroxidase activities. After treatment with GML, the apoptosis of hemocytes increased significantly in both WSSV-infected and uninfected crayfish. In summary, GML reduced the mortality of WSSV-infected crayfish, perhaps by modulating the innate immunity of the crayfish. Our study shows that GML can be used to induce the innate immunity and enhance the immune protection of the red claw crayfish against WSSV infection, either therapeutically or as a preventive measure.

Abstract
Crayfish is a very popular aquatic food in many countries, and enrofloxacin (ENR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) was the most frequently detected in aquatic products. However, limited information is available on the residue characterization, biotransformation rate and withdrawal period (WT) of ENR and CIP in crayfish and health risk via consumption of ENR and CIP remained crayfish. Herein, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to study residue depletion, biotransformation, ingestion risk, and WT of ENR and its predominate metabolite CIP in crayfish following different routes with repeated doses. The results showed that the elimination half-life (T1/2) of target compounds in crayfish were all in order of hepatopancreas > muscle > gill, and the order of T1/2 in different crayfish tissues were intramuscular (IM) route > oral (PO) treatment > immersion (IMMR) administration. The biotransformation rates from ENR to CIP varied from 0.75% to 3.45% in crayfish tissues following different exposure routes. The high dietary risk (RQ > 1) consuming muscle and hepatopancreas of ENR and CIP remained crayfish occurred at early after different administrations. WT is the key to control the drug residue risk, and the longest WT of marker residue of ENR in crayfish was calculated to be 51 d (1275 °C-day).

Abstract
Perchlorate and chlorate are both strong oxidants and thyroid toxicants that are widely distributed in soil, water and human foods. The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a common aquatic organism that is popular in Chinese culinary dishes. Dietary intake is the main route of human exposure to perchlorate and chlorate, though the health risks of crayfish consumption are unknown. Thus, this study investigated the quantities of perchlorate and chlorate in red swap crayfish from sampling sites in five provinces located near the Yangtze River in China, along with the associated health risks of consuming this species. Perchlorate was detected in 55.6-100 % of crayfish samples in each sampling location, and chlorate was found in 100 % of samples cross all sites. Concentrations of perchlorate in crayfish from upstream provinces (Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi) were higher than those from downstream provinces (Anhui and Jiangsu). Perchlorate and chlorate concentrations were positively correlated in crayfish, suggesting that chlorate may be a degradation byproduct of perchlorate. The quantities of both pollutants in hepatopancreas tissue were higher than in muscle tissues (p < 0.05), such that we do not recommend ingesting crayfish hepatopancreas. Hazard quotient (HQ) values for chlorate in crayfish were <1 across all provinces, suggesting no potential health risk of chlorate exposure through crayfish consumption. However, perchlorate concentrations in crayfish from the Jiangxi province had an associated HQ value >1, suggesting potential risks for human health. These results will be useful in informing mitigation measures aimed at reducing perchlorate exposure associated with crayfish consumption.

Abstract
The impact of dam reservoirs on river ecosystems is one of the current major issues in hydrobiology. In addition to the impact on native biodiversity, impoundments may facilitate biological invasions. A successful invasion is presumably related to the individual life history and resource allocation strategy in expanding populations. We tested whether reservoirs affect the body condition of invasive Faxonius limosus in upland streams. We found positive allometry of growth in females but more frequent isometric growth in males, and the form factor a3.0 was significantly higher in males than in females within populations. Fulton's condition factor (K) was calculated for standard carapace lengths of 20 mm (juvenile) and 40 mm (adult). Both mean KCL 20 and KCL 40 were higher in males than in females. Positive allometry of growth in females resulted in a larger mean KCL 40 than KCL 20. The majority of the mean K obtained in reservoirs was similar or lower than the respective condition in streams. The condition of adult females was higher in streams in comparison to reservoirs. The obtained results are in contrast to the hypothesis that reservoirs positively affect individual body conditions and show that these man-made lakes do not provide more favourable habitat conditions for F. limosus than those in the natural aquatic environments of an upland landscape. An advantageous effect of the presence of reservoirs on invasion spread may be possible in more ecologically harsh landscapes, especially in colder climatic zones. Our study is the first to investigate the relationship of the body condition of F. limosus in two contrasting habitats.

Abstract
With the wide use of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) in various industrial and commercial applications, they inevitably enter the aquatic environment. However, their behavior in the aquatic environment and potential toxicity to aquatic organisms remain little known. In this study, we investigated the behavior of CuNPs in freshwater, as well as the toxicity and bioaccumulation of CuNPs and copper sulfate (CuSO4), used as a positive control for copper ions toxicity, in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). The results showed that CuNPs released copper ions into freshwater and aggregated rapidly in freshwater, and their release of copper ions and aggregation slowed down at a higher concentration of CuNPs. The calculated 72-h LC50 values for crayfish were 1.18 and 0.54 mg/L for CuNPs and CuSO4, respectively. Cu accumulation in the gill and hepatopancreas from CuSO4 treatments was significantly higher than that from CuNPs, and the highest Cu bioaccumulation level in crayfish was found in the gill, followed by hepatopancreas and muscle with the exposure of copper. The activities of the antioxidative enzymes in the crayfish significantly decreased after exposure to CuNPs for 48 h, compared to the control (without CuNPs or CuSO4). Histological examination revealed that there was no significant alteration of hepatopancreas in the crayfish exposed to CuNPs. Meanwhile, the growth of crayfish was not significantly inhibited by CuNPs. These results suggested that CuNPs exposure can induce oxidative stress in the crayfish, gill is the main tissue for their accumulation, and their toxicity is mainly caused by the released copper ions.

Abstract
The ability of an animal to survive prolonged periods of oxygen deprivation is a critical area of study, both in terms of its importance to better understanding the physiology of these incredible animals and to its potential applicability to medical fields. The freshwater crayfish, Faxonius virilis, is one such animal capable of resisting anoxia, but it remains understudied and much of the metabolic mechanisms underlying this anoxia tolerance remain largely unprofiled. This study examines the activity and regulation of apoptosis and autophagy in F. virilis in response to 20-h anoxia. Apoptosis signaling was assessed through pro- and anti-apoptosis targets, whereas autophagy was assessed via expression response of multiple autophagy proteins. An anoxia-triggered, tissue-specific result arose, potentially based on the importance of individual organ integrity through hypometabolism. Tail muscle, which showed increased expression profiles of all three target groups, contrasted with hepatopancreas, which appeared to not be susceptible to either apoptotic or autophagic signaling during anoxia. This is likely due to the importance of the hepatopancreas, given that apoptosis or autophagy of this organ at any significant level could be fatal to the organism. The data provides a comprehensive overview of the responses and integration of multiple stress-responsive signaling pathways in F. virilis that provide a novel contribution to our understanding of pro-survival mechanisms supporting invertebrate anoxia resistance.

Abstract
Microplastics have become a worldwide pollutant, widely discovered in soil, air and aquatic environment. Microplastics have been found in habitats where crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) cultivated, but the impact of microplastics on crayfish remains unclear. In this study, after 21-day dietary exposure, polyethylene (PE) particles were found to accumulate in intestine, hepatopancreas, gills and hemolymph of crayfish. Furthermore, PE particles can still be detected in these tissues after a 7-day depuration in clean water. PE retained in these tissues caused oxidative stress responses, as indicated by the change of oxidative-stress-related index, such as the increase of H2O2 level and SOD activity. PE exposure also caused hemocytic encapsulation in crayfish hepatopancreas and increase of mucus secretion in intestine. Moreover, PE exposure affected the microbiota balance in crayfish, by reducing the total microbiota abundance and altering the proportions of many bacterial families. Interestingly, results showed that PE exposure led to of lower numbers of hemocytes and declination of phenoloxidase activity. Finally, PE exposure induced the expression of immune-related genes, including transcription factors and antimicrobial peptides. Taken these together, we conclude that PE microplastics exert considerable toxic effects on crayfish and are a potential threat to crayfish aquaculture and consumption. This study provides basic toxicological data toward quantifying and illuminating the impact of PE microplastics on freshwater animals.

Abstract
Clothianidin, a neonicotinoid insecticide that binds to arthropod nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, is widely used to protect plants against a wide variety of agricultural pests. Little is known about how this insecticide affects non-target invertebrate species in aquatic environments. In this study, we explored the effects of aqueous exposures of clothianidin on locomotion, chemosensory-based responses, and agonistic encounters of rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus). Clothianidin exposures at a concentration of 1.0 μg/L (i.e., 1.0 ppb) did not alter initiations and retreats, but did increase the amount of time the crayfish interacted per interaction. In a subsequent food cue experiment with crayfish exposed to clothianidin concentrations of 0.4 μg/L and 1.0 μg/L, the test organisms demonstrated chemosensory dysfunction, but no decrease in locomotory movement. As chemosensation is essential for recognizing previous rivals in crayfish, the loss of this sense likely resulted in the exposed crayfish being unable to detect cues used to recognize a previous competitor. An inability to recognize a previous competitor (and who won or lost the previous interaction) could result in crayfish spending more time fighting and less time on foraging and reproduction. This study demonstrates that exposures of crayfish to clothianidin at concentrations found in the environment affects the behavioural ecology of these aquatic invertebrates.

Abstract
Developing biodegradable active films has been a promising green approach to overcoming global concerns over the environmental pollution and human health caused by plastic utilization. This study aimed to develop active films based on chitosan (CS), produced from waste crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) shells enriched with bioactive extract (5-20%) of propolis (PS) and to characterize its properties, envisaging food packaging applications. The chromatographic profile of PS extract confirmed its richness, with 41 phenolic compounds. With increasing extract addition to the chitosan, the thickness of the films increased from 61.7 to 71.7 μm, causing a reduction in the light transmission rate, along with a greenish colour shift. The interactions between PS extract and CS was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, at the same time that the microstructural integrity of the films was checked on the scanning electron microscopy micrographs. The findings also showed that addition of PS enhanced the films thermal stability and mechanical properties e.g., tensile modulus, yield strength, and stress at break. Besides, it improved the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Overall, CS-based composite films seem a promising green alternative to petroleum-based synthetic plastics allowing to extend the shelf life of food products due to their eco-friendly nature.

Abstract
Procambarus clarkii is an important freshwater cultured crayfish in China. With the gradual development of its aquaculture industry, research on white spot disease, which is harmful to healthy culture of P. clarkii, increases gradually. The prophenoloxidase (proPO) system is an important part of crayfish's innate immunity and plays a role in virus resistance. In this study, based on the early discovery of three SNP sites in the intron of proPO gene, the linkage disequilibrium and haplotype were analyzed for the SNPs, and it was found that there was a strong linkage disequilibrium relationship among them. Through the analysis on association between the haplotypes and genotype of each SNP site with the WSSV-resistant traits, the detection of the SNP_7081 genotype was considered as the most convenient and efficient way for WSSV-resistant group selection. Furtherly, the high-resolution melting curve (HRM), which is a rapid and economic genotyping method, was chosen to establish for SNP_7081 site genotyping. The 68 bp target fragment with 27.94% GC content was amplified and melting curve analysis were performed. However, the appearance of false negatives which led to unable automatically grouped although the melting curves of genotypes CC, C>T and T>C were obviously different, and could be treated as standard to manually genotype the samples with an accuracy rate of 97.61%. The low GC content which correlated with the Tm value, was confirmed as the reason for the false negatives by the assay about the recombinant plasmid PMD18-T-SNP_7081 constructed with 45.24% GC content. Eventually, the adaptor primers were used to increase the GC content of the target fragment, and a modified HRM method for genotyping SNP_7081 site that could group automatically was established, which could provide a new insight for the HRM method to genotype SNPs.

Abstract
Organisms have the ability to adapt their behavior and physiology in response to seasonal changes in their habitat's environments. Although it is known that a specific light wavelength affects growth and reproduction in various animal taxa, its effect on sexual and seasonal differences in year-round breeding animals remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that a blue light stimulus promotes or suppresses larval growth in the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkia depending on the season. During the spawning season (natural growing period), blue light irradiation accelerates female growth faster than in males, but suppresses growth in both females and males in the overwintering season. Moreover, these seasonal plastic effects of blue light show apparent sexual differences, with female juveniles exhibiting the greatest sensitivity. Our findings provide an opportunity to research how the red swamp crayfish can adapt to various habitable niches from the point of view of light color perception, and can be applied for the development of a more effective aquaculture system, not only for crayfish, but also for other commercially available decapod crustaceans using a specific light environment.

Abstract
Morphological and molecular analyses were carried out to determine the causative agent of black gill disease in narrow-clawed crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus specimens collected from 6 lakes (Taşkısığı, Beyşehir, Karaidemir, Karataş, Manyas, and Gölhisar) in Turkey. Fungi were isolated from the tissues of crayfish displaying putative black gill disease symptoms. Morphological evaluation was conducted, and the isolates were determined to be similar to Fusarium oxysporum. Subsequent molecular cloning of the ITS region of nrDNA by PCR confirmed species identification; DNA sequences from all 6 isolates were 99% similar to those of F. oxysporum. An experimental infection trial was conducted in triplicate using 1 of the 6 isolates to fulfill Koch's postulates. Three groups of crayfish were used: (1) wounded and contaminated (WC), (2) wounded and not contaminated (WNC), and (3) non-wounded and contaminated (NWC). On Day 3, one individual died in the WC group. Throughout the total 74 d monitoring period, no other mortality was recorded. On Day 14, all crayfish in the WC group showed blackened gills, whereas all crayfish in the NWC displayed partial blackening and all crayfish in the WNC group displayed normal gill coloration. F. oxysporum was re-isolated in pure culture from the WC and NWC groups; thus, the disease was confirmed. Our results indicated that F. oxysporum causes black gill disease in P. leptodactylus crayfish. Moreover, we demonstrated that F. oxysporum can also infect non-wounded crayfish.

Abstract
Procambarus clarkii (crayfish) accumulates a high concentration of Arsenic (As) from the aquatic environment and causes considerable human health risks. In this study, Limosilactobacillus fermentum GR-3 strain was isolated from "Jiangshui" and applied for As(III) adsorption and antioxidant abilities. Strain GR-3 removed 50.67% of 50 mg/L As(III) and exhibited the high antioxidant potential of DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) (87.63%) and hydroxyl radical (74.51%) scavenging rate in vitro. P. clarkii was feed with strain GR-3, the results showed that As(III) concentration reduced, and residual level in hepatopancreas was decreased by 36%, compared to As(III)-exposed group (control). Gut microbial sequencing showed that strain GR-3 restores gut microbiota dysbiosis caused by As(III) exposure. Further application in the field scale was performed and revealed a decrease in As(III) accumulation and increasing 50% aquaculture production of the total output. In summary, feed-additive probiotic is recommended as a novel strategy to minimize aquaculture foods toxicity and safe human health.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn2+ as MnSO4 &/or MnCl2) is a common and essential element for maintaining life in plants and animals and is found in soil, fresh waters and marine waters; however, over exposure is toxic to organisms. MnSO4 is added to soil for agricultural purposes and people are exposed to Mn2+ in the mining industry. Hypermanganesemia in mammals is associated with neurological issues mimicking Parkinson's disease (PD) and appears to target dopaminergic neural circuits. However, it also seems that hypermanganesemia can affect many aspects of health besides dopaminergic synapses. We examined the effect on development, behavior, survival, cardiac function, and glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the Drosophila melanogaster. In addition, we examined the effect of Mn2+ on a sensory proprioceptive organ and nerve conduction in a marine crustacean and synaptic transmission at glutamatergic neuromuscular junctions of freshwater crayfish. A dose-response effect of higher Mn2+ retards development, survival and cardiac function in larval Drosophila and survival in larvae and adults. MnSO4 as well as MnCl2 blocks stretch activated responses in primary proprioceptive neurons in a dose-response manner. Mn2+ blocks glutamatergic synaptic transmission in Drosophila as well as crayfish via presynaptic action. This study is relevant in demonstrating the effects of Mn2+ on various physiological functions in order to learn more about acute and long-term consequences Mn2+ exposure.

Abstract
Gut-associated microbiota in crustaceans are recognized as a key element for maintaining homeostasis and health in the animal. Since the richness of these microbial communities is strongly influenced by the local environment, especially in aquatic organisms, it is important to address to what extent environmental variations can affect these communities. In the present study, we used high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing technology to study the composition of gut-associated microbiota of the crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus after exposure to environmentally-relevant concentrations of an antibiotic, namely sulfamethoxazole. Also, we examined if alterations of microbiota caused by environmentally-relevant concentrations of this antibiotic affected the host susceptibility to bacterial diseases, including Vibrio species. As a result, we found high individual variability of bacterial abundance and composition in the intestinal microbiome of crayfish, in both antibiotic-exposed and antibiotic-free crayfish. However, an increase of chitinolytic bacteria including Vibrio spp. was detected in some animals exposed to the antibiotic. Moreover, when crayfish susceptibility to bacterial infections was tested, the antibiotic-exposed crayfish survived longer than the control crayfish group. This study represents the first approach for investigating the interplay between crayfish and intestinal bacteria during antibiotic-pollution scenarios. Results herein should be considered by scientists before planning experiments under laboratory conditions, especially to study environmental effects on aquatic animals' intestinal health and immune status.

Abstract
In recent years, the use of natural products with immune-stimulating and antimicrobial properties has attracted increasing attention in aquaculture researches. In our study, the effect of diet supplemented with quercetin, a flavonoid commonly found in some types of plants substance on the innate immune response and disease resistance in crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is reported. It was found that dietary 40 mg/kg quercetin significantly reduced the mortality of crayfish and WSSV copy number after WSSV challenge. Dietary quercetin increased catalase (CAT), and lysozyme (LZM) activity in crayfish. Dietary quercetin increased the expression of NF-κB, anti-lipopolysaccharide factor (ALF) and toll-like receptor (TLR) genes in crayfish. The apoptosis rate of hemocyte was increased by quercetin supplement in crayfish. Our results suggest that dietary quercetin may affect the innate immunity of crayfish and protect crayfish from WSSV infection.

Abstract
Paragonimiasis is an important foodborne parasitic disease. Over 50 species of Paragonimus have been reported worldwide, and China has the widest distribution and largest number of species. The detection of Paragonimus metacercariae from second intermediate hosts has been reported in 22 provinces and municipalities. The most frequently reported species are P. westermani, P. skrjabini, P. heterotremus and Euparagonimus cenocopiosus. In this review, we collected and reviewed relevant reports on the detection of Paragonimus metacercariae in second intermediate hosts from 1937 to 2020 from all areas of China. We provide an updated and current summary of Paragonimus species and their hosts in China. Data on the geographical range, species distribution, and second intermediate host species of Paragonimus were extracted. ArcGIS10.2 software was used to generate distribution maps of Paragonimus for four time periods: 1937-1990, 1991-2005, 2006-2020 and 1937-2020. We analyzed the geographic and spatiotemporal dynamics of Paragonimus prevalence in natural foci and provided a basis for further research and paragonimiasis prevention strategies in China.

Abstract
In species whose social structure includes dominance relationships, individuals are likely to engage in frequent agonistic interactions with conspecifics, and these interactions can have substantial effects on participants. For example, 'winner' and 'loser' effects, whereby winning or losing a contest increases the probability of winning or losing subsequent encounters, have been described in many species. However, a smaller body of research has shown that winning or losing a contest can lead to additional behavioral changes that affect other domains of an individual's social experiences. Here, we report on an experiment designed to evaluate the effects of prior contests on subsequent mating interactions in the crayfish (Faxonius virilis). We presented males with mating opportunities either immediately following or 7 days after a contest with a conspecific male. We predicted that winners would be more likely to mate than losers, because of either or both winner/loser effects and differences in male competitiveness. We found that, when presented with a mating opportunity immediately following a contest, winning males were more likely to mate than were losing males. We also found that these differences had eroded within 7 days, such that there was no significant difference in the proportions of winners and losers that mated after that period. We concluded that the changes in mating behavior that we observed immediately after a contest were likely due to relatively short-term winner and loser effects, rather than any differences in the males' competitiveness, which would presumably be of longer duration.

Abstract
With a Nearctic distribution, the family Cambaridae harbors a high species richness in Mexico, which is also evident along the Pánuco River catchment. A series of surveys carried on in five populations from the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in the State of Querétaro resulted in localizing a putative new species for science. A molecular phylogenetic study and species delimitation analyses including all the known Procambarus species from the Pánuco River catchment were conducted based on three mitochondrial genes (16S rDNA, 12S rDNA, and COI; 2,462 bp in total). Phylogeny recovered all species as monophyletic, including the populations under study. All delimitation results based on barcoding, ABGD, GMYC, bPTP, and gonopod differentiation agree in the recognition of a new taxon, to which the name Procambarusxihuisp. nov. is given, and its diagnosis and description are provided. The new species can be distinguished from the remaining species in the genus, among other characters, by a unique configuration of the terminal elements of the first pleopod of form I male, which includes a central projection lamellate, hood-like, forming a concave blade-like structure mesially directed, as well as a caudal process crest-like, mesiodistally directed, forming a lateral side of the concavity.

Abstract
Arsenic (As) causes cancer and non-cancer health effects in humans. Previous research revealed As concentrations over 200 μg g-1 in lake sediments in the south-central Puget Sound region affected by the former ASARCO copper smelter in Ruston, WA, and significant bioaccumulation of As in plankton in shallow lakes. Enhanced uptake occurs during summertime stratification and near-bottom anoxia when As is mobilized from sediments. Periodic mixing events in shallow lakes allow dissolved As to mix into oxygenated waters and littoral zones where biota reside. We quantify As concentrations and associated health risks in human-consumed tissues of sunfish [pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus)], crayfish [signal (Pacifastacus leniusculus) and red swamp (Procambarus clarkii)], and snails [Chinese mystery (Bellamya chinensis)] from lakes representing a gradient of As contamination and differing mixing regimes. In three shallow lakes with a range of arsenic in profundal sediments (20 to 206 μg As g-1), mean arsenic concentrations ranged from 2.9 to 46.4 μg g-1 in snails, 2.6 to 13.9 μg g-1 in crayfish, and 0.07 to 0.61 μg g-1 in sunfish. Comparatively, organisms in the deep, contaminated lake (208 μg g-1 in profundal sediments) averaged 11.8 μg g-1 in snails and 0.06 μg g-1 in sunfish. Using inorganic As concentrations, we calculated that consuming aquatic species from the most As-contaminated shallow lake resulted in 4-10 times greater health risks compared to the deep lake with the same arsenic concentrations in profundal sediments. We show that dynamics in shallow, polymictic lakes can result in greater As bioavailability compared to deeper, seasonally stratified lakes. Arsenic in oxygenated waters and littoral sediments was more indicative of exposure to aquatic species than profundal sediments, and therefore we recommend that sampling methods focus on these shallow zones to better indicate the potential for uptake into organisms and human health risk.

Abstract
Estrogenic hormones and organic ultraviolet-filters (UV-filters) have attracted increased attention as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) due to their potent estrogenicity and widespread occurrence in the environment. This study investigated the accumulation of three estrogenic hormones and five UV-filters in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Exposure experiments were conducted for 42 days with a mixture of EDCs at two environmentally-relevant design concentrations (i.e., 500 and 5000 ng L-1). The aqueous-phase EDC concentrations decreased over time and were re-established every two days. Within 14 days of exposure, the five UV-filters were measured at 2.2 to 265 ng g-1 (dry weight) in crayfish tail tissue. Only one estrogenic hormone, 17β-estradiol, was detected in the crayfish at 10.4-13.5 ng g-1. No apparent changes were observed for EDC concentrations in the tail tissue over the next four weeks of exposure. The apparent bioaccumulation factors for the EDCs ranged from 23 L (kg tail tissue, dry weight)-1 for 4-methylbenzylidene camphor to 1050 L (kg tail tissue, dry weight)-1 for 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate. EDC input was stopped after 42 days, and the more hydrophobic UV-filters (i.e., octocrylene, 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate, homosalate) were found to be persistent throughout a 14-d elimination period. A lyticase-assisted yeast estrogen screen demonstrated that the residual estrogenic activity of water samples aligned with (or was lower than) predictions from targeted chemical analysis. These results suggest that the transformation products did not contribute significant estrogenicity, although further analysis of endocrine disruption outcomes in crayfish is recommended.

Abstract
Innate immunity in arthropods is achieved largely through melanization which is in turn the result of the prophenoloxidase (ProPO) activation cascade; a series of biochemical reactions triggered by the immune identification of pathogen-recognition proteins (PRPs). Within this activation cascade, inactive proPO is cleaved to form the reactive enzyme phenoloxidase (PO). Methods of detecting PO are used to assess an arthropod's ability to respond to immune challenges. These detection assays have been described for some arthropods, especially those of commercial value, but none are available for Euastacus, a genus within the superfamily Parastacoidea. This study is the first step in developing a standardized protocol for the detection and quantification of PO activity in wild or captive Murray crayfish Euastacus armatus. Hemolymph extracts from 49 crayfish were assessed for PO activity using an assay measuring the conversion of l-dopa (3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine) into dopachrome. Short periods (up to 15 min) out of water did not cause any measurable change in PO activity. Phenoloxidase activity was detected in captive (n = 24, stressed) and wild (n = 25, healthy) crayfish with captive crayfish showing lower levels of PO possibly indicating immunosuppression. The proven protocol is the first of its kind to propose a standardized methodology for the detection and quantification of PO activity in Murray crayfish hemolymph as a means of determining stress.

Abstract
Organosilicon has been widely used in various fields of industry and agriculture due to its excellent properties, such as high and low temperature resistance, flame retardant, insulation, radiation resistance and physiological inertia. However, organosilicon toxicity in aquatic animals is seldom known. In this research, two typical silicone or silane coupling agents (KH-560 (3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) and KH-570 (3-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane)) were used in a hydroponic experiment to evaluate the effects on survival rate, antioxidant response and gene expression in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Crayfishes were grown in black aquaculture boxes containing different concentrations (0, 10, 100 and 1000 mg L-1) of KH-560 and KH-570 for 72 h, and then crayfish samples were harvested and separated into tissues of carapace, gill and muscle for analysis. The results showed that silicone significantly increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in muscle by 17%-38% except for the treatment of 100 mg L-1 KH-570, and reduced the survival rate of crayfish. Additionally, silicone KH-570 increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) by 15%-31%, 17%-35%, and 9%-46%, as well as the contents of ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) by 19%-31%, and 23%-29% respectively, in muscle tissue, and similar results occurred in KH-560. In the carapace, however, SOD activity was significantly decreased at high concentrations level of both silicone treatments. Moreover, silicon (Si) content was higher in the abdominal muscle of crayfish after silicone treatment. Assay of gene expression showed an obvious increasing expression of antioxidant related genes (Sod1, Sod2, Cat1, Cat2, and Pod1, Pod2) under silicone stress. The above results suggested that silicone caused an obvious stress response in crayfish in both biochemical and molecular levels.

Abstract
Electroretinography (ERG) is a foundational method for assessing visual system physiology, but accurate ERG can be time- and labor-intensive, often involving manual adjustment of the wavelength and intensity of light stimuli and real-time comparison of physiological responses to inform those adjustments. Furthermore, current approaches to ERG often require expertise beyond that necessary for the electrophysiological preparation itself. To improve both the efficiency and accessibility of ERG, we designed an automated system for stimulus presentation and data acquisition. Here, we test this novel system's ability to accurately assess spectral sensitivity in the well-characterized visual system of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii using three approaches: the first, based on response magnitude, maximizes efficiency; the second is a well-established method we use to further validate our efficient approach's accuracy. Third, we explore the potential benefits of extensible automation using a method assessing the interplay between temporal acuity and spectral sensitivity. Using our system, we are able to acquire accurate results in ERG experiments quickly (testing the entire visible spectrum in 8 min, 30 s using our response magnitude approach). Moreover, data collected via all three methods yielded results consistent with each other and previous work on P. clarkii.

Abstract
Maduramicin, an extensively used anticoccidial drug, has been introduced into environment due to poorly absorbed in the intestine of broiler chicken. To understand the potential ecological toxicity of maduramicin on aquatic organisms, acute and subacute toxicity, hemolymph biochemistry, histopathology and the expressions of drug metabolism and stress response genes of crayfish (Procambius clarkii) were investigated in this study. For the first time, the 96 h median lethal concentration (LC50) of maduramicin on crayfish was 67.03 mgL-1 with a 95% confidence interval (54.06-81.32 mgL-1). Then, the crayfish were exposed to 0.7 mgL-1 (1/100 LC50), 3.5 mgL-1 (1/20 LC50) and 7.0 mgL-1 (1/10 LC50) maduramicin for 28 days. Maduramicin significantly altered biochemical parameters including AST, ALT, CK, LDH and ALP of hemolymph in crayfish at several time points. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) of crayfish gills, hepatopancreas and abdominal muscle were significantly decreased or elevated by different concentrations of maduramicin treatment at varying time points. Furthermore, histopathological damage of crayfish gills, hepatopancreas and abdominal muscle were observed in a concentration-dependent manner. The expressions of metabolic and stress response genes (CYP450, GST, COX1, COX2, HSP70 and MT) in hepatopancreas of crayfish were significantly up-regulated by maduramicin (7.0 mgL-1) treatment for 8 h to 7 d, and returned to normal levels after the removal of maduramicin for 3-7 days. In conclusion, our findings demonstrated that environmental exposure of maduramicin threaten to the health of crayfish living in the areas nearby livestock farms or pharmaceutical factory. Crayfish exhibited resistance to the stress of maduramicin via activating drug metabolite and detoxification pathways.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to isolate and identify the causative agent of burn spot disease syndrome from crayfish populations within Turkish water bodies. Crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus samples were captured from Bayramşah Reservoir, Karaidemir Reservoir and Keban Reservoir (Turkey). Fungi samples were taken from symptomatic crayfish and cultured in potato dextrose agar, and DNAs were extracted. Species-specific PCR primers (FAF1 and FAR) were used in order to amplify the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of fungal DNA. Sequences obtained from the amplified regions were analyzed using GenBank and identified. As a result, a molecular diagnosis of the fungi samples was made, and the pathogen was identified as Fusarium avenaceum. In addition, a challenge test with healthy crayfish was conducted to evaluate the pathogenicity of the fungi. F. avenaceum was reisolated from experimentally infested individuals, and thusly we confirmed the disease. It was concluded that F. avenaceum causes burn spot disease syndrome in P. leptodactylus.
