Abstract
The role of Aeromonas spp. in gastroenteritis is controversial due to varied clinical presentations and variable prevalence in asymptomatic. This study, conducted in Northern Israel, aimed to compare positivity rate and demographic characteristics of patients with Aeromonas-associated gastroenteritis (AAG) to asymptomatic, and examine the role of Aeromonas in AAG by comparing clinical and epidemiological characteristics between AAG and Campylobacter-associated gastroenteritis (CAG) patients. Results showed that 4.24%-4.81% of AAG patients had Aeromonas spp. in stools as a sole pathogen in 2020-2022, compared to 4.9% of asymptomatic. Analysis of 243 CAG patients versus 70 AAG patients revealed significantly less diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and muscle pain in AAG patients. Multivariate analysis identified higher Ct values, recent restaurant dining, and prolonged diarrhea as predictive factors for AAG versus CAG. In conclusion, similar positivity rates of Aeromonas spp. in symptomatic and asymptomatic making the distinction between true pathogen versus commensal bacteria difficult, unlike CAG.

Abstract
Campylobacter is a common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. This report presents a rare case of a 44-year-old female who developed a caecum perforation following an initial diagnosis of Campylobacter jejuni infection. The patient initially presented with several episodes of diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Initial investigations confirmed an uncomplicated C. jejuni infection, which was treated with antibiotics and supportive measures. Despite treatment, the patient's symptoms persisted and worsened, and caecum perforation was confirmed on the abdomen and pelvis computed tomography. The patient underwent an emergency right hemicolectomy with an end ileostomy and was discharged home on postoperative day 14 after she made a full recovery. Healthcare professionals should be vigilant for possible severe complications in patients with C. jejuni infection. Frequent abdominal examinations with radiological investigations should be considered when symptoms are worsening to promptly identify any potentially life-threatening complications similar to those in the presenting case.

Abstract
Salmonellosis, caused by Salmonella species, is one of the most common foodborne illnesses worldwide with an estimated 93.8 million cases and about 155,00 fatalities. In both industrialized and developing nations, Salmonellosis has been reported to be one of the most prevalent foodborne zoonoses and is linked with arrays of illness syndromes such as acute and chronic enteritis, and septicaemia. The two major and most common Salmonella species implicated in both warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals are Salmonella bongori and Salmonella enterica. To date, more than 2400 S. enterica serovars which affect both humans and animals have been identified. Salmonella is further classified into serotypes based on three primary antigenic determinants: somatic (O), flagella (H), and capsular (K). The capacity of nearly all Salmonella species to infect, multiply, and survive in human host cells with the aid of their pathogenic and virulence arsenals makes them deadly and important public health pathogens. Primarily, food-producing animals such as poultry, swine, cattle, and their products have been identified as important sources of salmonellosis. Additionally, raw fruits and vegetables are among other food types that have been linked to the spread of Salmonella spp. Based on the clinical manifestation of human salmonellosis, Salmonella strains can be categorized as either non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) and typhoidal Salmonella. The detection of aseptically collected Salmonella in necropsies, environmental samples, feedstuffs, rectal swabs, and food products serves as the basis for diagnosis. In developing nations, typhoid fever due to Salmonella Typhi typically results in the death of 5%-30% of those affected. The World Health Organization (WHO) calculated that there are between 16 and 17 million typhoid cases worldwide each year, with scaring 600,000 deaths as a result. The contagiousness of a Salmonella outbreak depends on the bacterial strain, serovar, growth environment, and host susceptibility. Risk factors for Salmonella infection include a variety of foods; for example, contaminated chicken, beef, and pork. Globally, there is a growing incidence and emergence of life-threatening clinical cases, especially due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella spp, including strains exhibiting resistance to important antimicrobials such as beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, and third-generation cephalosporins. In extreme cases, especially in situations involving very difficult-to-treat strains, death usually results. The severity of the infections resulting from Salmonella pathogens is dependent on the serovar type, host susceptibility, the type of bacterial strains, and growth environment. This review therefore aims to detail the nomenclature, etiology, history, pathogenesis, reservoir, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, epidemiology, transmission, risk factors, antimicrobial resistance, public health importance, economic impact, treatment, and control of salmonellosis.

Abstract
What is already known on this topic? Foodborne diseases present a substantial global health risk. Traditional diagnostic methods have constraints, but advancements in molecular techniques, like quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), provide a hopeful solution. What is added by this report? We examined 1,011 stool samples from individuals suspected of foodborne illnesses. Our analysis indicated a significant presence of Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella enterica, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), and adenovirus. Notably, co-infections were identified in 71.22% of the samples. What are the implications for public health practice? The data emphasize a notable prevalence of co-infections, highlighting the complexity of foodborne illnesses. This study underscores the significance of utilizing contemporary diagnostic methods in densely populated urban areas such as Beijing Municipality.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) against SARS-CoV-2 on bacterial gastroenteritis illnesses (BGIs), including Campylobacter spp., Aeromonas spp., Salmonella spp., Shigella spp./enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC), and Yersinia enterocolitica, in outpatients, inpatients, and emergency departments (ED). Data of patients from a health care area in Madrid (Spain) with diarrhea and positive-real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were collected. The periods analyzed were prepandemic (P0, April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020), first (P1, April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021), and second (P2, April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022) pandemic years. We compared the prevalence, median age, patient profile, and absolute incidence (AI) per 100,000 population during the study periods using Fisher's test (p < 0.05). One thousand eighty-one (13.9%, [95% confidence interval, CI: 13.1-14.6]) of the 7793 patients tested during P0, 777 (13.3%, [95% CI: 12.4-14.2]) of the 5850 tested during P1, and 945 (12.4%, [95% CI: 11.7-13.2]) of the 7606 patients tested were positive for some BGIs. The global prevalence showed a decreasing trend that was statistically significant in P2. During P1, there was an increase in BGIs in the ED with a decrease of median age (p > 0.05). However, during P2, the prevalence for outpatients increased (p < 0.05). The individual prevalence analysis over the three periods remained homogeneous for most of the BGIs (p > 0.05). The AI of most BGIs showed a decreasing trend at P1 and P2 with respect to P0 (p > 0.05). However, Shigella spp./EIEC was the only BGI with a decrease in prevalence, and AI showed statistically significant variation in P1 and P2 (p < 0.05). The prevalence and AI for BGIs mostly showed a slight decrease during the first 2 pandemic years compared with the prepandemic may be explained by the greater impact of foodborne transmission on BGIs. The significant decrease in Shigella spp./EIEC illnesses could explain the mainly person-to-person transmission and the reduction of bacterial load in fomites for NPIs. Abstract
Aeromonas species can cause acute gastroenteritis but are much less commonly observed in the hospital setting than other bacteria. Most cases of Aeromonas hydrophila gastroenteritis reported in the literature have occurred in pediatric, elderly, and/or immunocompromised patients. We present a case of subacute watery diarrhea due to A. hydrophila infection in an otherwise healthy 48-year-old female patient with prior abdominal surgeries and recent hospitalization for a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) for which she received antibiotics. The patient presented with 10 days of increasingly frequent non-bloody, watery, foul-smelling diarrhea as well as decreased oral intake, cramping bilateral upper abdominal pain, chills, and malaise. Initial diagnoses considered included Clostridioides difficile in the setting of CAUTI and antibiotic use, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, dumping syndrome related to bariatric surgery, and malabsorption. A computed tomography scan of her abdomen/pelvis, admission labs, and flexible sigmoidoscopy showed no relevant findings. Stool cultures eventually returned positive for A. hydrophila. The case is an uncommon presentation of Aeromonas infection that could be easily missed while other diagnoses are pursued. Early treatment of Aeromonas infection can be crucial in preventing advanced forms of disease such as septicemia and necrotizing fasciitis.

Abstract
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) are common causes of infectious diarrhea among young children of low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) and travelers to these regions. Despite their significant contributions to the morbidity and mortality associated with childhood and traveler's diarrhea, no licensed vaccines are available. Current vaccine strategies may benefit from the inclusion of additional conserved antigens, which may contribute to broader coverage and enhanced efficacy, given their key roles in facilitating intestinal colonization and effective enterotoxin delivery. EatA and EtpA are widely conserved in diverse populations of ETEC, but their immunogenicity has only been studied in controlled human infection models and a population of children in Bangladesh. Here, we compared serologic responses to EatA, EtpA and heat-labile toxin in populations from endemic regions including Haitian children and subjects residing in Egypt, Cameroon, and Peru to US children and adults where ETEC infections are sporadic. We observed elevated IgG and IgA responses in individuals from endemic regions to each of the antigens studied. In a cohort of Haitian children, we observed increased immune responses following exposure to each of the profiled antigens. These findings reflect the wide distribution of ETEC infections across multiple endemic regions and support further evaluation of EatA and EtpA as candidate ETEC vaccine antigens.

Abstract
Objective To estimate gastroenteritis disease and its etiological agents in children under the age of 5 years living in South Africa. Methods A mini literature review of pertinent articles published in ScienceDirect, PubMed, GoogleScholar, and Scopus was conducted using search terms: "Gastroenteritis in children," "Gastroenteritis in the world," Gastroenteritis in South Africa," "Prevalence of gastroenteritis," "Epidemiological surveillance of gastroenteritis in the world," and "Causes of gastroenteritis". Results A total of 174 published articles were included in this mini review. In the last 20 years, the mortality rate resulting from diarrhea in children under the age of 5 years has declined and this is influenced by improved hygiene practices, awareness programs, an improved water and sanitation supply, and the availability of vaccines. More modern genomic amplification techniques were used to re-analyze stool specimens collected from children in eight low-resource settings in Asia, South America, and Africa reported improved sensitivity of pathogen detection to about 65%, that viruses were the main etiological agents in patients with diarrhea aged from 0 to 11 months but that Shigella, followed by sapovirus and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli had a high incidence in children aged 12-24 months. In addition, co-infections were noted in nearly 10% of diarrhea cases, with rotavirus and Shigella being the main co-infecting agents together with adenovirus, enteropathogenic E. coli, Clostridium jejuni, or Clostridium coli. Conclusions This mini review outlines the epidemiology and trends relating to parasitic, viral, and bacterial agents responsible for gastroenteritis in children in South Africa. An increase in sequence-independent diagnostic approaches will improve the identification of pathogens to resolve undiagnosed cases of gastroenteritis. Emerging state and national surveillance systems should focus on improving the identification of gastrointestinal pathogens in children and the development of further vaccines against gastrointestinal pathogens.

Abstract
Introduction. The different pathotypes of Escherichia coli can produce a large number of human diseases. Surveillance is complex since their differentiation is not easy. In particular, the detection of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) serotype O157 : H7 consists of stool culture of a diarrhoeal sample on enriched and/or selective media and identification of presumptive colonies and confirmation, which require a certain level of training and are time-consuming and expensive.Hypothesis. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a quick and easy way to obtain the protein spectrum of a microorganism, identify the genus and species, and detect potential biomarker peaks of certain characteristics.Aim. To verify the usefulness of MALDI-TOF MS to rapidly identify and differentiate STEC O157 : H7 from other E. coli pathotypes.Methodology. The direct method was employed, and the information obtained using Microflex LT platform-based analysis from 60 clinical isolates (training set) was used to detect differences between the peptide fingerprints of STEC O157 : H7 and other E. coli strains. The protein profiles detected laid the foundations for the development and evaluation of machine learning predictive models in this study.Results. The detection of potential biomarkers in combination with machine learning predictive models in a new set of 142 samples, called 'test set', achieved 99.3 % (141/142) correct classification, allowing us to distinguish between the isolates of STEC O157 : H7 and the other E. coli group. Great similarity was also observed with respect to this last group and the Shigella species when applying the potential biomarkers algorithm, allowing differentiation from STEC O157 : H7Conclusion. Given that STEC O157 : H7 is the main causal agent of haemolytic uremic syndrome, and based on the performance values obtained in the present study (sensitivity=98.5 % and specificity=100.0 %), the implementation of this technique provides a proof of principle for MALDI-TOF MS and machine learning to identify biomarkers to rapidly screen or confirm STEC O157 : H7 versus other diarrhoeagenic E. coli in the future.

Abstract
Introduction Lactobacilli are avid producers of antimicrobial compounds responsible for their adaptation and survival in microbe-rich matrices. The bactericidal or bacteriostatic ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can be exploited for the identification of novel antimicrobial compounds to be incorporated in functional foodstuffs or pharmaceutical supplements. In this study, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus L33, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum L125 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei SP5, previously isolated form fermented products, were examined, against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis and Escherichia coli. Methods The ability of viable cells to inhibit pathogen colonization on HT-29 cell monolayers, as well as their co-aggregation capacity, were examined utilizing the competitive exclusion assay. The antimicrobial activity of cell-free culture supernatants (CFCS) was determined against planktonic cells and biofilms, using microbiological assays, confocal microscopy, and gene expression analysis of biofilm formation-related genes. Furthermore, in vitro analysis was supplemented with in silico prediction of bacteriocin clusters and of other loci involved in antimicrobial activity. Results The three lactobacilli were able to limit the viability of planktonic cells of S. aureus and E. coli in suspension. Greater inhibition of biofilm formation was recorded after co-incubation of S. enterica with the CFCS of Lc. paracasei SP5. Predictions based on sequence revealed the ability of strains to produce single or two-peptide Class II bacteriocins, presenting sequence and structural conservation with functional bacteriocins. Discussion The efficiency of the potentially probiotic bacteria to elicit antimicrobial effects presented a strain- and pathogen-specific pattern. Future studies, utilizing multi-omic approaches, will focus on the structural and functional characterization of molecules involved in the recorded phenotypes.

Abstract
There is now strong evidence to support the interest in using lactic acid bacteria (LAB)in particular, strains of lactococci and lactobacilli, as well as bifidobacteria, for the development of new live vectors for human and animal health purposes. LAB are Gram-positive bacteria that have been used for millennia in the production of fermented foods. In addition, numerous studies have shown that genetically modified LAB and bifodobacteria can induce a systemic and mucosal immune response against certain antigens when administered mucosally. They are therefore good candidates for the development of new mucosal delivery strategies and are attractive alternatives to vaccines based on attenuated pathogenic bacteria whose use presents health risks. This article reviews the most recent research and advances in the use of LAB and bifidobacteria as live delivery vectors for human and animal health.

Abstract
Several honeybee products are known for their functional properties, including important antioxidant and antimicrobial actions. The present study examines the antioxidant activity (AA), total polyphenolic content (TPC), and antibacterial action of honey and propolis samples collected from the Greek island of Samothrace, which were applied in vitro either individually or in combination in selected concentrations. To accomplish this, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and the Folin-Ciocalteu assays were employed to determine the AA and TPC, respectively, while the antibacterial action was investigated against each one of four important pathogenic bacterial species causing foodborne diseases (i.e., Salmonella enterica, Yersinia enterocolitica, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes) using the agar well diffusion assay. Compared to honey, propolis presented significantly higher AA and TPC, while its combined application with honey (at ratios of 1:1, 3:1, and 1:3) did not increase these values. Concerning the antibacterial action, Y. enterocolitica was proven to be the most resistant of all the tested bacteria, with none of the samples being able to inhibit its growth. S. enterica was susceptible only to the honey samples, whereas L. monocytogenes only to the propolis samples. The growth of S. aureus was inhibited by both honey and propolis, with honey samples presenting significantly higher efficacy than those of propolis. Νo synergism in the antibacterial actions was observed against any of the tested pathogens. Results obtained increase our knowledge of some of the medicinal properties of honey and propolis and may contribute to their further exploitation for health promotion and/or food-related applications (e.g., as preservatives to delay the growth of pathogenic bacteria).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diarrhea is a common symptom among liver transplant (LT) recipients and can result in significant morbidity. The utility of PCR-based multiplex gastrointestinal (GI) pathogen panels in this population is unknown. METHODS We assessed incidence, predictors, and outcomes of GI PCR positivity among inpatients who underwent stool pathogen testing with the FilmArray multiplex GI PCR panel at our institution within 1 year following LT from April 2015 to December 2019. RESULTS 112 patients were identified. 14 (12.5%) had a positive PCR for any pathogen. Escherichia coli (n = 9) and Norovirus (n = 5) were the most common pathogens detected. Recipients with a positive PCR were significantly further from LT (median 74.5 vs 15.5 days, p < 0.01) and tested earlier during hospitalization (median 1.0 vs 9.0 days, p < 0.01). C. difficile was positive in 20.0% of patients with a positive PCR and 11.4% with a negative PCR. CMV viremia was observed in 11.6% of patients, all in the negative PCR group. Following a positive PCR, patients were more likely to have a change in antimicrobial regimen (71.4% vs 28.6%, p = 0.02), a shorter length of stay (median 7.5 vs. 17.5 days, p < 0.01), and a trend toward lower rates of readmission and colonoscopy within 30 days. CONCLUSIONS In hospitalized LT recipients with diarrhea, GI PCR pathogen identification was associated with the use of targeted antimicrobial therapy and a shorter length of stay. Abstract
The genus Aeromonas comprises more than 30 Gram-negative bacterial species and naturally inhabitants from aquatic environments. These microorganisms, commonly regarded as pathogens of fish and several other animals, have been gaining prominence on medical trial due to its ability to colonize and infect human beings. Besides water, Aeromonas are widely spreaded on most varied sources like soil, vegetables, and food; Although its opportunistic nature, they are able to cause infections on immunocompromised or immunocompetent patients. Aeromonas species regarded as potential human pathogens are usually A. hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. veronii biovar sobria. The main clinical manifestations are gastrointestinal tract disorders, wound, and soft tissue infections, as well as septicemia. Regarding to antibiotic responses, the bacteria present a diversified susceptibility profile and show inherence resistance to ampicillin. Aeromonas, as an ascending genus in microbiology, has been carefully studied aiming comprehension and development of methods for detection and medical intervention of infectious processes, not fully elucidated in medicine. This review focuses on current clinical knowledge related to human health disorders caused by Aeromonas to contribute on development of efficient approaches able to recognize and impair the pathological processes.
