Abstract
Anthropogenic environmental pollutants affect many physiological, biochemical, and endocrine actions as reproduction, metabolism, immunity, behavior and as such can interfere with any aspect of hormone action. Microbiota and their genes, microbiome, a large body of microorganisms, first of all bacteria and co-existing in the host´s gut, are now believed to be autonomous endocrine organ, participating at overall endocrine, neuroendocrine and immunoendocrine regulations. While an extensive literature is available on the physiological and pathological aspects of both players, information about their mutual relationships is scarce. In the review we attempted to show various examples where both, endocrine disruptors and microbiota are meeting and can act cooperatively or in opposition and to show the mechanism, if known, staying behind these actions.

Abstract
The hazardous effects of herbicides are well known; however, their effects on the reproductive system remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated the anti-proliferative effects of dinitramine (DN) on immature murine testicular cell lines (Leydig and Sertoli cells) mediated via endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced calcium dysregulation in the cytosol and mitochondria. The results demonstrated that the viability and proliferation of DN-treated TM3 and TM4 cells decreased significantly, even in the spheroid state. DN induced the apoptosis of TM3 and TM4 cells and decreased the expression of genes related to cell cycle progression. Treatment with DN increased the cytosolic and intramitochondrial levels of calcium by activating ER stress signals. DN activated the Erk/P38/Jnk Mapk pathway and inactivated the Pi3k/Akt pathway in murine testicular cells. Co-treatment with 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2-APB) mitigated DN-induced calcium upregulation in both testicular cell lines. Although 2-APB did not antagonize the anti-proliferative effect of DN in TM3 cells, treatment with 2-APB and 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid restored the proliferation of DN-treated TM4 cells.

Abstract
Photoperiod is an environmental signal that controls physiology and behavior of all organisms. Bank voles, which are seasonal breeders, are stimulated to reproduce by the long photoperiod associated with spring and summer. To date, physiology of bank vole spermatozoa has not been explored, although they constitute an interesting model for examining the relationship between photoperiod and xenoestrogen on spermatozoa function. In an attempt to evaluate the acute effect of 4-tert-octylphenol (OP) an in vitro system was used. Spermatozoa isolated from the cauda epididymidies of long-day (LD; 18 h light: 6 h darkness) and short-day (SD; 6 h light: 18 h darkness) bank voles were treated with two OP concentrations (10(-4) M and 10(-8)M, respectively). OP-treated spermatozoa were used for the examination of motility parameters (computer-assisted semen analyzer CEROS), acrosome integrity (Commassie blue staining), cAMP production (immunoenzymatic assay) and cell viability (flow-cytometry analysis). The study revealed the photoperiod-dependent effect of short OP-treatment on motility parameters of vole spermatozoa. In LD spermatozoa, an increase of velocities: (curvilinear velocity [VCL], average path velocity [VAP] straight line velocity [VSL]) and head activity (amplitude of the lateral head displacement, [ALH]) was found. Interestingly, in SD spermatozoa opposite effect on VCL, VAP, VSL and ALH was observed, however only after treatment with 10(-4)M OP. The dose-dependent influence of OP upon acrosome integrity, as well as cAMP levels, in relation to the reproductive status of voles was observed. Moreover, OP exposure affected spermatozoa morphology rather than spermatozoa viability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Several studies have reported a time-related decline in semen quality. In this context, 101,404 spermograms-spermocytograms performed in a single andrology laboratory from January 2000 to December 2009 were investigated retrospectively. Variations of sperm parameters were analyzed over the years. PATIENTS AND METHODS For each semen sample, age at semen collection, duration of sexual abstinence, volume of seminal fluid, pH, concentration of spermatozoa, percentages of overall motile and progressive motile sperm, percentage of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa (according to David's classification) and amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) were analyzed. For each parameter, the mean value per year was determined. To examine trends over time the statistical tests used were analyses of variance and correlation studies. RESULTS Data showed an increasing age of patients from 36.5 years in 2000 to 37.2 years in 2009. The semen concentration was 63.5 millions/mL in 2000 and 63.6 millions/mL in 2009 with a slight fall from 2001 to 2008. The vitality continuously increased from 67.8% in 2000 to 73.5% in 2009 as well as the overall motility (from 37.7% to 39.2%) and the progressive motility (from 34.6% to 36.2%). The percentage of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa continuously increased from 64.5% to 84.2% (r=0.43, P<0.001). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Contrary to a variety of works, our very large study of semen analysis did not show a real decline in semen WHO parameters during a 10-year period, except for the percentage of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa, which dramatically increased over the years.

Abstract
UNLABELLED RéSUMé: OBJECTIFS : La majorité des études effectuées au cours des dernières décennies ont mis en évidence une augmentation du nombre de cas de cryptorchidie et d'hypospadias entre 1970 et 1990. De plus, l'importante variabilité géographique de ces anomalies est bien décrite. Cette étude vise à mesurer la prévalence à la naissance de la cryptorchidie et de l'hypospadias au Québec, à vérifier si ces anomalies sont en augmentation et à en évaluer la répartition interrégionale. MéTHODE :: Une étude épidémiologique descriptive a été réalisée à partir du nombre de garçons de cinq ans et moins hospitalisés pour une cryptorchidie ou un hypospadias au Québec de 1989 à 2004 selon les données du fichier administratif d'hospitalisation MED-ÉCHO. Les données sur les naissances provenaient de l'Institut de la statistique du Québec. RéSULTATS :: La prévalence annuelle moyenne pour 1000 naissances vivantes de sexe masculin est de 19,1 (IC à 95 % : 18,8-19,4) pour la cryptorchidie et 11,4 (IC à 95 % 11,1-11,6) pour l'hypospadias au Québec. Au cours de la période étudiée, la prévalence de cryptorchidie a légèrement diminué, alors que celle de l'hypospadias est demeurée stable. Comparativement à la province du Québec, des régions présentent une prévalence significativement différente de cryptorchidie et/ou d'hypospadias. . CONCLUSION : Au Québec, la prévalence de cryptorchidie est en légère diminution alors que celle de l'hypospadias est stable. Des variations régionales significatives sont observables. D'autres études sont nécessaires afin d'évaluer l'hypothèse d'un lien avec les contaminants environnementaux en émergence. L'implantation d'un système de surveillance des anomalies congénitales permettrait une représentation plus valide de la situation.

Abstract
In the early 1990s different studies highlighted the relationship between pharmaceuticals, human health and the environment. Among the emerging contaminants, antibiotics are obviously of high concern, because of their potential for inducing antibiotic resistance. In addition, natural and synthetic hormones are relevant because of their potential endocrine-disrupting effects on wildlife. This investigation focuses on the analysis of four classes of veterinary and human pharmaceuticals (sulfonamides, tetracyclines, analgesics and hormones) in surface water and wastewater in Luxembourg. The selected eleven pharmaceuticals include four sulfonamides (sulfathiazole, sulfamethoxazole, sulfadimethoxine and sulfamethazine), two tetracyclines (tetracycline and oxytetracycline), two analgesics (ibuprofen and diclofenac), and three hormones (2 naturals, estrone and beta-estradiol, and a synthetic one, 17-alpha-ethinyl estradiol). The most innovative parts of this study are the simultaneous extraction of the above-mentioned pharmaceuticals as well as tracking their behaviour during flood events in a small river catchment. The method includes pre-concentration by solid phase extraction using Oasis HLB (Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance) which gave superior results compared to Chromabond C-18EC, Chromabond(R) EASY and Bond Elut PLEXA cartridges, also evaluated in this investigation. The analysis of the investigated pharmaceutical compounds is carried out by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The limits of quantification were 1 ng L(-1), except for beta-estradiol (2 ng L(-1)) and 17-alpha-ethinyl estradiol (6 ng L(-1)). Recovery rates range from 70 to 94%, with relative standard deviations between 4 and 19%. Application of this method to river concentration and flood events revealed high concentrations of ibuprofen (10-4000 ng L(-1)), with highest levels during flood events, while concentrations of estrogens (1-240 ng L(-1)) and sulfonamides (1-20 ng L(-1)) were comparatively low.

Abstract
Reproductive pathology in the male represents about 20% of infertility cases. Male infertility may be attributed to a number of causes, including genetic and congenital abnormalities, infection, multisystemic diseases, varicocele, and others; however, a significant number of cases are idiopathic. Global declines in semen quality were suggested to be associated with enhanced exposure to environmental chemicals that act as endocrine disrupters as a result of our increased use of pesticides, plastics, and other anthropogenic materials. A significant body of toxicology data based upon laboratory and wildlife animals studies suggests that exposure to certain endocrine disrupters is associated with reproductive toxicity, including (1) abnormalities of the male reproductive tract (cryptorchidism, hypospadias), (2) reduced semen quality, and (3) impaired fertility in the adult. There is, however, a relative paucity of studies designed to measure exposure to endocrine disrupters on semen quality parameters (sperm concentration, motility, morphology). An overview of the human semen quality literature is presented that examines the role of endocrine disrupters including organochlorines (OC), dioxins, phthalates, phytoestrogens, and chemical mixtures (pesticides and tobacco smoke).
