Appraisal of pollution of potentially toxic elements in different soils collected around the industrial area

Spatial distribution characteristics and risk assessment of soil heavy metal pollution around typical coal gangue hill located in Fengfeng Mining area

The pollution of heavy metals in soil caused by exposed coal gangue and its prevention and control has become a hot issue restricting the green mining of coal in China. Nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI), potential ecological risk index (RI) and human health risk assessment model were used to evaluate the pollution and risk of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, As, Pb) in the soil around the typical coal gangue hill in Fengfeng mining area of China. The results show that: firstly, the accumulation of coal gangue leads to the enrichment of four heavy metals in the surrounding shallow soil, and NIPI and RI were 1.0-4.4 and 21.63-91.28, respectively. The comprehensive pollution level of heavy metals in soil reached the warning line and above, and the potential ecological risk level reached slightly and above. When the horizontal distance exceeded 300 m, 300 m and 200 m, respectively, the influence of coal gangue hill on the heavy metal content in shallow soil, the comprehensive pollution level of heavy metals and the potential ecological risk level basically disappeared. In addition, based on the potential ecological risk assessment results and main risk factors, the ecological risk configuration of the study area was divided into five categories: "strong ecological risk + As," "intermediate ecological risk + As + Cu," "intermediate ecological risk + As + Cu or Pb," "minor ecological risk + As + Cu" and "minor ecological risk + As + Cu or Pb." The hazard index (HI) and total carcinogenic risk (TCR) of shallow soil polluted by heavy metals in the study area were 0.24-1.07 and 0.41 × 10-4-1.78 × 10-4, respectively, which posed non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to children, but the risks were controllable. This study will help to take strategic measures to accurately control and repair the heavy metal pollution in the soil around the coal gangue hill and provide a scientific basis for solving the safe use of agricultural land and realizing the construction of ecological civilization.

Assessment of soil heavy metal pollution and associated ecological risk of agriculture dominated mid-channel bars in a subtropical river basin

The elevated concentrations of heavy metals in soil considerably threaten ecological and human health. To this end, the present study assesses metals pollution and its threat to ecology from the mid-channel bar's (char) agricultural soil in the Damodar River basin, India. For this, the contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (I_geo), pollution index, and ecological risk index (RI) were measured on 60 soil samples at 30 stations (2 from each station, i.e., surface and sub-surface) in different parts of the mid-channel bar. The CF and EF indicate that both levels of char soil have low contamination and hence portray a higher potential for future enrichment by heavy metals. Moreover, I_geo portrays that soil samples are uncontaminated to moderately contaminated. Further, pollution indices indicate that all the samples (both levels) are unpolluted with a mean of 0.062 for surface soils and 0.048 for sub-surface soils. Both levels of the char have a low potentiality for ecological risk with an average RI of 0.20 for the surface soils and 0.19 for the sub-surface soils. Moreover, Technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) indicates that the sub-surface soils have lower pollution than the surface soils. The geostatistical modeling reveals that the simple kriging technique was estimated as the most appropriate interpolation model. The present investigation exhibits that reduced heavy metal pollution is due to the sandy nature of soils and frequent flooding. However, the limited pollution is revealed due to the intensive agricultural practices on riverine chars. Therefore, this would be helpful to regional planners, agricultural engineers, and stakeholders in a basin area.

Soil Amendments and Foliar Melatonin Reduced Pb Uptake, and Oxidative Stress, and Improved Spinach Quality in Pb-Contaminated Soil

Amending Pb-affected soil with biochar (BH) and magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKC) reduces Pb uptake in plants. Moreover, foliar applications of melatonin and proline are also known to reduce plant oxidative stress and Pb uptake. However, little is known about combining both techniques, i.e., adding a combo immobilizing dose (CIA = mixture of BH and MKC at 50:50 ratio) in Pb-polluted soil and foliar application of proline and melatonin for reducing Pb uptake and oxidative stress in spinach. Control, proline, melatonin, CIA, CIA+proline, and CIA+melatonin were the treatments utilized in this pot study to see their effects on reducing plant oxidative stress, Pb uptake, and improving spinach quality in Pb-polluted soil. Moreover, Pb bioavailability, enzymatic activities, and numbers of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes in the soil were also evaluated. The effect of CIA on reducing Pb in the soil-plant system and improving soil enzymes and microbial numbers was more pronounced than melatonin alone. The most effective treatment was CIA+melatonin reducing Pb availability in soil (77%), shoots (95%), and roots (84%), alleviating oxidative stress, and improving plant biomass (98%) and nutrients. Soil enzymatic activities and the number of microorganisms in the rhizosphere were also highest with CIA+melatonin. Results highlight the significance of CIA+melatonin, as an inexpensive approach, in remediating Pb-polluted soil and improving spinach quality. However, further research is needed to understand the significance of CIA+melatonin on different crops and various soil Pb concentrations before employing this technique commercially in agriculture and environment sectors.

Reasons, Form of Ingestion and Side Effects Associated with Consumption of Amanita muscaria

In recent months, there has been a new trend involving the consumption of Amanita muscaria. The aim of this article was to investigate the reasons for consumption, the form taken and the adverse symptoms that were indicated by those consuming Amanita muscaria. After analysing 5600 comments, 684 people were included in the study, who, in social media groups such as Facebook, stated the purpose of consuming the mushroom (n = 250), the form of mushroom they were taking (n = 198) or the adverse symptoms they experienced (n = 236). The gender of the subjects differentiated the parameters analysed. In the study group of women, the main purpose of consuming Amanita muscaria was to reduce pain, as well as to reduce skin problems, while in men it was mainly to relieve stress, reduce the severity of depressive symptoms and reduce insomnia (p < 0.001). With regard to the form of mushroom ingested, tincture was predominant in the women's study group, while dried was predominant in the men (p < 0.001). In terms of side effects, women reported primarily headaches, while men reported nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and drowsiness (p < 0.001). Advanced research on Amanita muscaria should be carried out to make the community aware of the toxicity of this fungus.

Environmental and health impacts assessment of long-term naturally-weathered municipal solid waste incineration ashes deposited in soil-old burden in Bratislava city, Slovakia

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) is an effective method for reducing the volume/mass of waste. However, MSWI ashes contain high concentrations of many substances, including trace metal (loid)s, that could be released into the environment and contaminate soils and groundwater. In this study, attention was focused on the site near the municipal solid waste incinerator where MSWI ashes are deposited on the surface without any control. Here, combined results (chemical and mineralogical analyses, leaching tests, speciation modelling, groundwater chemistry and human health risk assessment) are presented to assess the impact of MSWI ash on the surrounding environment. The mineralogy of ∼forty years old MSWI ash was diverse, and quartz, calcite, mullite, apatite, hematite, goethite, amorphous glasses and several Cu-bearing minerals (e.g. malachite, brochantite) were commonly detected. In general, the total concentrations of metal (loid)s in MSWI ashes were high, following the order: Zn (6731 mg/kg) > Ba (1969 mg/kg) ≈ Mn (1824 mg/kg) > Cu (1697 mg/kg) > Pb (1453 mg/kg) > Cr (247 mg/kg) > Ni (132 mg/kg) > Sb (59.4 mg/kg) > As (22.9 mg/kg) ≈ Cd (20.6 mg/kg). Cadmium, Cr, Cu, Pb, Sb and Zn exceeded the indication or even intervention criteria for industrial soils defined by the Slovak legislation. Batch leaching experiments with diluted citric and oxalic acids that simulate the leaching of chemical elements under rhizosphere conditions documented low dissolved fractions of metals (0.00-2.48%) in MSWI ash samples, showing their high geochemical stability. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were below the threshold values of 1.0 and 1 × 10^-6, respectively, with soil ingestion being the most important exposure route for workers. The groundwater chemistry was unaffected by deposited MSWI ashes. This study may be useful in determining the environmental risks of trace metal (loid)s in weathered MSWI ashes that are loosely deposited on the soil surface.

Identifying contamination of heavy metals in soils of Peruvian Amazon plain: use of multivariate statistical techniques

The Peruvian Amazon plain has abundant natural resources and is home to great biodiversity, which makes it an area with high economic potential. However, the use of its resources through various activities has contributed to the release of heavy metals (HMs) into its soils, generating severe pollution problems which have mainly affected the health of local populations and their ecosystems. Currently, there are no comprehensive studies that have identified the specific sources of contamination by HMs in the soils of this part of the Peruvian territory. In this sense, this research aims to identify the possible sources of contamination by HMs in the soils of the Peruvian Amazon plain to focus efforts on the establishment of adequate measures for the protection of the health of people and the ecosystem. In the present study, samples of topsoils (0-20 cm depth) and subsoils (100-150 cm depth) were collected for the analysis of 11 HMs (Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, Be, and Hg) in 48 sites located in four regions of the Peruvian Amazon plain (Loreto, Amazonas, San Martín, and Ucayali), over the year 2019. The enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index were applied to assess contamination levels of HMs. The results indicated that topsoils and subsoils presented a greater enrichment by the elements Be and Pb, and were classified as moderately contaminated. Likewise, the integral analysis of these indexes together with principal component analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, correlation analysis, and coefficient of variation allowed the identification of potential sources of contamination by HMs. As a result, Fe, Co, Zn, Ni, V, and Cr were associated with natural or lithogenic sources (parent material, crude oil deposits, and organic matter decomposition). Hg was attributed to anthropogenic sources (illegal gold mining, atmospheric deposition, and vehicle emissions). Be, Pb, Cu, and Mn originated from natural sources (parent material, crude oil deposits, decomposition of organic matter, and forest fires) and anthropogenic (areas degraded by solid waste, illegal gold mining, agriculture, and hydrocarbons). These findings provide essential information to establish regulations and prevent and control HM contamination in soils of the Peruvian Amazon plain.

Spatial distribution and potential ecological risk of metal(loid)s in cultivated land from Xianjia Town in Fujian, Southeast China

Metal(loid)s in cultivated land become an important issue with respect to human health and food security. However, it remains challenging to identify metal(loid) pollution characteristics due to varying environmental settings at the local scale. In this study, the geographic information system and categorical regression model were applied to analyze the spatial distribution and influencing factors of metal(loid)s in cultivated land using 90 sampling sites in Xianjia Town, Southeast China. The pollution levels and ecological risks of five metal(loid)s-Cd, Pb, Cr, Hg, and As-were further investigated using the single pollution index (PI), Nemerow comprehensive pollution index (PN), and potential ecological risk index (RI). The results indicate that the cultivated soils were affected by Cd and Pb pollution, with 3.06 and 6.30 times higher average concentrations than the soil environment background values (SEBV) of Fujian Province, respectively. Based on the CATREG model, crop type had a great impact on Pb and Hg contents. Cr contents were higher in rice fields, while Hg and As concentrations were higher in turmeric fields. Cr and Hg contents under five crop types did not exceed the SEBV of Fujian Province. The average Pb contents in rice fields were 1.25 and the Cd contents in vegetable fields 1.09 times higher than the average value in sampled soils. According to the RI, 63.66% of the sampling points were at medium to high risk. These findings enhance our understanding of the metal(loid)s pollution characteristics and their ecological risks in cultivated land at the local scale.

Factors conditioning soil PTE contents and the associated health risk in an area with mixed land use

The study of soil chemical composition and geochemical characterization is of great concern. In 2020, a soil survey of the Ararat region (Armenia) was conducted to study the contents of soil elements (Cr, V, Ti, As, Zn, Cu, Co, Fe, Mn, Ba, Pb, Mo, Ca, and K), identify pollution sources and factors conditioning their spatial distribution patterns, and assess the health risk associated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs). The combined application of compositional data analysis and geospatial mapping allowed to reveal three subsamples with unique chemical signatures. Group I included soils in which Fe, Co, Ti, Mn, V, Ba, Pb, and Zn had mainly a natural origin. Soils of Group II are localized in heavily urbanized and industrialized parts of the region, and their spatial distribution is in line with relatively high contents of Cu and partially As, Cr, and K. The spatial distribution of Group III coincides with positions of soils with relatively high contents of Ca and is in line with the geological features and the locations of stone quarries. The human health risk assessment showed that As contents pose a mono-elemental noncarcinogenic health risk to children in two sites (near the Gold Factory and Tigranashen village), whereas a multi-elemental health risk to children was identified on almost the entire region's territory. Moreover, the comparatively high level of As risk was identified in Group III and linked to the travertine quarries exploitation. The results of this study indicated the need for additional in-depth studies targeting As contents and its unrevealed features linked to the travertine quarries exploitation.

Evaluation of heavy metal contamination in copper mine tailing soils of Kitwe and Mufulira, Zambia, for reclamation prospects

Understanding the level of heavy metal contamination coupled with the assessment of environmental and human risks associated with mine waste dumpsites is an important step to initiating efficient measures for mine wasteland restoration, stabilization, and bioremediation. In the present study, concentration of the heavy metals; Copper (Cu), Cobalt (Co), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb), Manganese (Mn), and Zinc (Zn) in soil from mine waste dumpsites around Kitwe (Sites: TD25 and TD26) and Mufulira (Site: TD10), Zambia, was assessed to determine the level of contamination, ecological risks, and progress made in reclamation. The mine waste dumpsites in the two towns are located in the vicinity of residential areas. Therefore, there is need to provide information for optimization of protocols for post-mining landscape in Zambia and elsewhere to limit soil, river, and groundwater contamination and to accelerate the restoration process . Mean values for soil pH, electrical conductivity, and organic matter varied between 5.9-8.4, 2534.8-538.6 μS/cm, and 0.90-2.75%, respectively. The mean concentrations of heavy metals of TD25, TD26, and TD10 decreased in order of Fe > Cu > Co > Mn > Pb > Zn across all sites. However, the order of overall degree of heavy metal contamination computed using control soil as a baseline in TD25, TD26, and TD10 was Cu > Co > Fe > Pb > Mn > Zn. The pollution load index was 0.355 at TD25, 0.329 at TD26, and 0.189 at TD10, indicating high soil pollution at TD25 and TD26. The Potential Ecological Risk Index for all heavy metals tested at TD25, TD26, and TD10 showed low ecological risk in the vicinity of the studied dumpsites. Furthermore, the present study also showed that the polluted soils around smelter sites and mine waste dumpsites are susceptible to dispersion by wind and water. Additionally, results from TD10 revealed that the initiated remediation of the tailings dam was somewhat successful. Finally, this study provided an updated status regarding the accumulation of heavy metals in mine waste dumpsites of Kitwe and Mufulira, Zambia and baseline information necessary to enhance post-mining landscape reclamation.
