Coordination of 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2 H-benzimidazole-2-selone to zinc and cadmium: Monotonic and non-monotonic bond length variations for [H(sebenzim Me)] 2MCl 2 complexes (M = Zn, Cd, Hg). Abstract
The reactions of 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-selone, H(sebenzimMe), towards the zinc and cadmium halides, MX2 (M = Zn, Cd; X = Cl, Br, I), afford the adducts, [H(sebenzimMe)]2MX2, which have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The halide ligands of each of these complexes participate in hydrogen bonding interactions with the imidazole N-H moieties, although the nature of the interactions depends on the halide. Specifically, the chloride and bromide derivatives, [H(sebenzimMe)]2ZnX2 and [H(sebenzimMe)]2CdX2 (X = Cl, Br), exhibit two intramolecular N-H•••X interactions, whereas the iodide derivatives, [H(sebenzimMe)]2ZnI2 and [H(sebenzimMe)]2CdI2, exhibit only one intramolecular N-H•••I interaction. Comparison of the M-Se and M-Cl bond lengths of the chloride series, [H(sebenzimMe)]2MCl2 (M = Zn, Cd, Hg), indicates that while the average M-Cl bond lengths progressively increase as the metal becomes heavier, the variation in M-Se bond length exhibits a non-monotonic trend, with the Cd-Se bond being the longest. These different trends provide an interesting subtlety concerned with use of covalent radii in predicting bond length differences. In addition to tetrahedral [H(sebenzimMe)]2CdCl2, [H(sebenzimMe)]3,CdCl2•[H(sebenzim)Me]4CdCl2, which features both five-coordinate and six-coordinate coordinate centers, has also been structurally characterized. Finally, the reaction between CdI2 and H(sebenzimMe) at elevated temperatures affords the 1-methylbenzimidazole complex, [H(sebenzimMe)]-[H(benzimMe)]CdI2, a transformation that is associated with cleavage of the C-Se bond.

Abstract
A perylene derivative, namely N,N'-bis(2(trimethylammonium iodide)ethylene)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide (TAIPDI) forms nanoscale columnar stacks in water that have been characterized by using optical absorption and emission measurements, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This behaviour was compared with that of unstacked TAIPDI in methanol. Assembly formation between the one-dimensional TAIPDI stacks and zinc phthalocyanine tetrasulphonic groups (ZnPcS4) via strong π-π and ionic interactions has been described in an aqueous medium. The formation constant of the supramolecular dyad has been determined as 2.94 × 104 M-1 from both the absorption and fluorescence measurements. Upon addition of ZnPcS4, the fluorescence quenching of the singlet-excited state of TAIPDI was observed because of the electron transfer process from ZnPcS4 to TAIPDI via the singlet-excited states of ZnPcS4 and TAIPDI entities. The electrochemical studies supported the electron transfer pathways via the singlet states of ZnPcS4 and TAIPDI. The thermodynamic parameters of the supramolecular complex have been determined from stopped-flow measurements. The interaction between ZnPcS4 and TAIPDI occurs in two steps, where the rate constant of the second step with TAIPDI (207 ± 8 M-1 s-1) is much slower than the first one (3515 ± 101 M-1 s-1). Activation parameters for the complex formation (ΔH# = 76 ± 11 kJ mol-1 and ΔS# = 83 ± 37 J K-1 mol-1, and ΔH# = 221 ± 15 kJ mol-1 and ΔS# = 540 ± 50 J K-1 mol-1) were determined from variable temperature studies for the first and second steps, respectively. The significantly positive ΔS# values found for both steps of the interaction reactions are consistent with a dissociative mechanism.

Abstract
The tris(2-mercaptoimidazolyl)hydroborato ligand, [TmBut ], has been used to investigate the exchange of alkyl and sulfur donor ligands between the Group 12 metals, Zn, Cd and Hg. For example, [TmBut ]2Zn reacts with Me2Zn to yield [TmBut ]ZnMe, while [TmBut ]CdMe is obtained readily upon reaction of [TmBut ]2Cd with Me2Cd. Ligand exchange is also observed between different metal centers. For example, [TmBut ]CdMe reacts with Me2Zn to afford [TmBut ]ZnMe and Me2Cd. Likewise, [TmBut ]HgMe reacts with Me2Zn to afford [TmBut ]ZnMe and Me2Hg. However, whereas the [TmBut ] ligand transfers from mercury to zinc in the methyl system, [TmBut ]HgMe/Me2Zn, transfer of the [TmBut ] ligand from zinc to mercury is observed upon treatment of [TmBut ]2Zn with HgI2 to afford [TmBut ]HgI and [TmBut ]ZnI. These observations demonstrate that the phenomenological preference for the [TmBut ] ligand to bind one metal rather than another is strongly influenced by the nature of the co-ligands.

Abstract
A series of copper(ii) complexes, viz. [Tp(MeMe)Cu(Cl)(H2O)] (), [Tp(MeMe)Cu(OAc)(H2O)] (), [Tp(MeMe)Cu(NO3)] () and [Tp(MeMe)Cu(ClO4)] () containing tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate (KTp(MeMe)), have been synthesized and fully characterized. The substitution reaction of with thiourea was studied under pseudo-first-order conditions as a function of concentration, temperature and pressure in methanol and acetonitrile as solvents. Two reaction steps that both depended on the nucleophile concentration were observed for both solvents. Substitution of coordinated methanol is about 40 times faster than the substitution of chloride. In acetonitrile, the rate constant for the displacement of coordinated acetonitrile was more than 20 times faster than the substitution of chloride. The reported activation parameters indicate that both reaction steps follow a dissociative mechanism in both solvents. On going from methanol to acetonitrile, the rate constant for the displacement of the solvent becomes more than 200 times faster due to the more labile acetonitrile, but the substitution mechanism remained to have a dissociative character. The antioxidant activities of were evaluated for superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione-s-transferase (GST0 and glutathione reduced (GSH-Rd) activity. and were found to show (p < 0.05) the highest antioxidant activity in comparison to and , which can be ascribed to the geometric configuration as well as the nature of the co-ligand. showed catechol oxidase activity with turnover numbers of 20 min(-1) and a coordination affinity for 3,5-DTBC of K1, = 31 mM(-1). K1 is rather large and seems to be typical for faster biomimetic models, and also for the enzyme itself (25 mM(-1)). The reaction rate depended linearly on the complex concentration, indicating a first-order dependence on the catalyst concentration.

Abstract
Multinuclear ((1)H, (77)Se, and (199)Hg) NMR spectroscopy demonstrates that 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-selone, H(sebenzim(Me)), a structural analogue of the selenoamino acid, selenoneine, binds rapidly and reversibly to the mercury centers of HgX2 (X = Cl, Br, I), while X-ray diffraction studies provide evidence for the existence of adducts of composition [H(sebenzim(Me))]xHgX2 (X = Cl, x = 2, 3, 4; X = I, x = 2) in the solid state. H(sebenzim(Me)) also reacts with methylmercury halides, but the reaction is accompanied by elimination of methane resulting from protolytic cleavage of the Hg-C bond, an observation that is of relevance to the report that selenoneine demethylates CysHgMe, thereby providing a mechanism for mercury detoxification. Interestingly, the structures of [H(sebenzim(Me))]xHgX2 exhibit a variety of different hydrogen bonding patterns resulting from the ability of the N-H groups to form hydrogen bonds with chlorine, iodine, and selenium.

Abstract
The 1-arylimidazole-2-thiones, (HmimAr) [Ar = 3,4,5-C6H2(OMe)3, 2,4-C6H3(NO2)(OMe), 2,4,6-C6H2Cl3 and 3,5-C6H3(CF3)2], which feature electronically diverse substituents, may be obtained via acid-catalyzed ring closure of the corresponding N,N'-aryldiethoxyethylthiourea derivatives, ArN(H)C(S)N(H)CH2CH(OEt)2, (H2detuAr), which in turn are obtained via treatment of aminoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal, H2NCH2CH(OEt)2, with the respective arylisothiocyanates (ArNCS). The molecular structures of all of the above N,N'-aryldiethoxyethylthioureas and 1-arylimidazole-2-thiones have been determined by X-ray diffraction, thereby demonstrating that the substituents have a profound effect on the crystal structures. For example, each of the N,N'-aryldiethoxyethylthiourea derivatives adopts a different hydrogen bonding pattern. Specifically, the hydrogen-bonding network in (i) H2detuArCl3 consists of chains of 9-membered rings, with an [ [Formula: see text](9)] motif, that feature one N-H ⋯ O and one N-H ⋯ S interaction, (ii) H2detuArOMe,NO2 consists of chains of 6-membered rings, with an [ [Formula: see text](6)] motif, that feature two head-to-tail N-H ⋯ S interactions, (iii) H2detuAr(CF3)2 consists of a dimer that features two pairs of N-H ⋯ O interactions, of which each pair is a component of an 8-membered ring with an [ [Formula: see text](8)] motif, and (iv) H2detuAr(OMe)3 consists of a chain of head-to-head dimeric rings with a basic [ [Formula: see text](16)] motif, a notable feature of which is that sulfur does not play a role as a hydrogen bond acceptor. Each of the 1-arylimidazole-2-thiones exists as a "head-to-head" hydrogen-bonded dimer in the solid state, with an [ [Formula: see text](8)] motif. However, while the hydrogen-bonded motifs for HmimArCl3 and HmimAr(OMe)3 are planar, those for HmimAr(CF3)2 and HmimArOMe,NO2 are extremely puckered, with fold angles of 24.2° (mean value) and 45.7°, respectively.

Abstract
Two new dithiolate copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes with the ligand tert-butyl N-(2-mercaptoethyl)-carbamate (Boc-SH) were prepared. Their structures were established to be [(Boc-S)2M], where M=Cu (1) and Ni (2) by using elemental analysis, thermal analysis, molar conductivity, FT-IR, Raman, UV/VIS, and ESR as well as EI-mass spectroscopic methods. The X-ray structure of the ligand Boc-SH was also determined. Spectral data showed that the carbamate ligand act as anioinic bidentate through one immine nitrogen and one thiolate sulfur donor atoms. The spectral techniques suggest that both complexes appear to have square planar geometries. The very low electrical conductance of the two complexes supports their neutral nature. The redox behaviors of the obtained complexes were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The monomeric nature of both complexes was assessed from their magnetic susceptibility values. The thermoanalytical data evidence that complex (2) is stable up to 165°C and undergo complete decomposition, resulting in NiO as a residual product. The TEM image of the obtained oxide residue showed its nanosize cluster, suggesting that complex (2) may be used as a precursor for the formation of nanooxide. The methylation reactions of the two dithiolate complexes (1) and (2) with methyl iodide appear to occur intramolecularly at the metal(II)-bound dithiolates, forming the metal(II)-bound dithioether complexes [M(Boc-SCH3)2]I2 with clean second-order constants of 7.95×10(-2) and 10.59×10(-2) M(-1) s(-1), respectively.

Abstract
The addition of flexible scorpionate ligand, [mpBm]⁻{i.e. HB(mt)2(mp), where mt = methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole and mp = 2-mercaptopyridine} to group eleven centres is reported for the first time. The coordination of this hybrid ligand to copper(I) and silver(I) centres in the presence of triphenylphosphine and trialkylphosphine co-ligands has been investigated. The trialkylphosphines coordinates to both copper and silver centres while the less basic triarylphosphine only successfully coordinates to the copper centre. Structural characterisation of [Cu{HB(mt)₂(mp)}(PPh₃)], [Cu{HB(mt)₂(mp)}(PCy₃)] and [Ag{HB(mt)₂(mp)}(PCy₃)] confirm κ³-SSH coordination modes for ligand where one of the mt 'arms' and the mp 'arm' of the scorpionate ligand are coordinated to the metal centre. The second mt 'arm' remains uncoordinated in all three complexes. A comparison has been made with the parent sulfur based scorpionate ligand, [Tm]⁻{HB(mt)₃}.

Abstract
2-Seleno-1-methylbenzimidazole, H(sebenzimMe), can be synthesized from 1-methylbenzimidazole by sequential treatment with (i) BunLi, (ii) elemental selenium and (iii) HCl(aq). This method is also applicable to the synthesis of 2-seleno-1-t-butylbenzimidazole, H(sebenzimBut ). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopic data demonstrate that H(sebenzimMe) and H(sebenzimBut ) exist as the selone rather than the selenol tautomers, which is in accord with the results of density functional theory (B3LYP) calculations. The data also indicate that the selone is best represented as a C+-Se- zwitterion rather than as a C=Se doubly bonded species. Aerobic oxidation of H(sebenzimMe) and H(sebenzimBut ) in the presence of Et3N yields the diselenides, (sebenzimMe)2 and (sebenzimBut )2. In addition, H(sebenzimMe) reacts with HgCl2 to give [H(sebenzimMe)]2HgCl2, the first structurally characterized example of a 2-seleno-1-alkylimidazole mercury complex.

Abstract
The alkylation reactions of soft scorpionates are reported. The hydrotris(S-alkyl-methimazolyl)borate dications (alkyl = methyl, allyl, benzyl), which were prepared by the reaction of Tm(Me) anion and primary alkyl halides, have been isolated and structurally characterised. The reaction is, however, not universally successful. DFT analysis of these alkylation reactions (C=S versus B-H alkylation) indicates that the observed outcome is driven by kinetic factors. Extending the study to incorporate alternative imine thiones (mercaptobenzothiazole, bz; thiazoline, tz) led to the structural characterisation of di[aquo-μ-aquohydrotris(mercaptobenzothiazolyl)boratosodium], which contains sodium atoms in the κ(3)-S,S,S coordination mode. Alkylation of Na[Tbz] and Na[tzTtz] leads to decomposition resulting in the formation of the simple S-alkylated heterocycles. The analysis of the species involved in these reactions shows an inherent weakness in the B-N bond in soft scorpionates, which has implications for their use in more advanced chemistry.
