Abstract
Backgroud Erigeron floribundus is a herbaceous plant used in traditional Cameroonian medicine to treat diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic properties of the aqueous extract of E. floribundus leaves (AEEF) in diabetic rats. Methods Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg) in normal rats fasted for 16 h. Subsequently, 30 diabetic male rats were divided into groups and treated orally for 21 days with distilled water (10 mL/kg), glibenclamide (3 mg/kg) and AEEF (300, 400, and 500 mg/kg). Body weight, food and water intake, blood glucose, insulin levels, lipid and oxidative profiles, as well as some markers of liver and kidney function were assessed. Histological sections of the rats' pancreas were taken. Results AEEF and glibenclamide significantly increased (p < 0.001) body weight and decreased food and water intake in rats. A decrease in blood glucose (p < 0.001) and an increase in insulin levels (p < 0.001) were observed in the AEEF and glibenclamide groups. AEEF caused a significant (p < 0.001) decrease in the levels of total cholesterol, LDL-c, triglycérides and coronary risk index (CRI), accompanied by a significant (p < 0.001) increase in HDL levels and HOMA-β in rats. AEEF showed an improvement (p < 0.001) in CAT and SOD activity and GSH levels accompanied by a significant decrease (p < 0.001) in malondialdehyde levels. In addition, ALAT and ASAT activity, urea and creatinine levels were significantly reduced (p < 0.001) after treatment with AEEF and glibenclamide. The extract also improved the size of Langerhans Islets in the pancreas of diabetic rats. Conclusion AEEF contains several bioactive compounds conferring antidiabetic, anti-dyslipidemic and antioxidant properties, thus justifying its therapeutic use in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Opuntia speciesis used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes mellitus (DM). Polysaccharide is one of the main components of Opuntia. Opuntia polysaccharide (OPS) is a kind of natural active macromolecular substance, numerous animal experiments have been conducted to treat DM, however, its protective effect and mechanism in animal models of DM has not been clarified. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of OPS on DM through a stematic review and meta-analysis of animal models, and whether its improves blood glucose (BG) levels, body weight (BW), food intake, water intake, and lipid levels, and to summarize the potential mechanism of OPS in the treatment of DM. MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched relevant Chinese and English databases from the date of construction to March 2022, including PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedicine Literature Database (CBM), Chinese Science and Technology Periodicals Database (VIP), Wanfang Database. 16 studies were included for meta-analysis. RESULTS The results showed that compared with the model group, the OPS significantly improved BG, BW, food intake, water intake, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Meta-regression and subgroup analysis showed that intervention dose, animal species, duration and modeling method may be the source of the heterogeneity. There was no statistical difference between the positive control group and the OPS treatment group in improving BW, food intake, water intake, TC, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C. CONCLUSIONS OPS can effectively improve the symptoms of hyperglycemia, polydipsia, polyphagia, low body weight, and dyslipidemia in DM animals. The possible protective mechanisms of OPS on DM animals are immune regulation, repair of damaged pancreatic β cells, and inhibition of oxidative stress and cell apoptosis.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a novel biscuit by supplementing cladode flour (CF) into whole-wheat flour (WWF) at different proportions 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%. Proximate analysis revealed that CF had a high amount of ash (11.9%) and dietary fiber (41.04%). Major minerals determined by ICP-MS were calcium (4.47 g/100 g); potassium (1.25 g/100 g); magnesium (1.46 g/100 g); and trace elements such as zinc (1.77 mg/100 g), copper (0.95 mg/100 g), and selenium (148.5 μg/100 g). The analysis of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity showed high values (649.88 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100 g; 399.16 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/100 g; and 72.37%, respectively). HPLC was used to identify four phenolic acids (gallic, ferulic, syringic, and caffeic acids) and only one flavonoid (rutin) in cladode flour. Biscuit hardness, L∗, and a∗ color values decreased corresponding to the incorporation level of CF. Sensory evaluation showed that the substitution level (up to 25%) is ideal to prepare an acceptable bio-biscuit. Cladode flour could be very useful for the food industry as a source of bioactive compounds with technological potential and nutritional and antioxidant properties.

Abstract
Background:Nopal (Opuntia spp.) is by excellence the most utilized cactus in human and animal nutrition. It is also a very noble plant; its main physicochemical, nutritional and nutraceutical characteristics allow the use of nopal in diverse food applications. Special focus has been given over the past decades in the use of Opuntia for the treatment of metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is predominantly related to Diabetes Mellitus. In this sense, the prevalence of MetS is increasing at a worldwide level. This in turn has led to a notorious demand for natural and nutraceutical food sources.Methods:The objective of this work was to summarize the main contributions in the field of Opuntia spp. research highlighting the potential use of nopal fruits or cladodes in MetS treatment, providing the reader with historical and novel information in this field. Nevertheless, the present work is not a meta-analysis. We included mainly information from recognized scientific databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar. No homeopathic based studies were included since they lack scientific validation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that fairly categorizes the majority of the information in this field into subsections, which can be of interest for the reader, such as the effect of nopal against cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity among others.Conclusion:Nopal constitutes one of the most studied members of the Cactaceae family; its potential effects on human health have been described since ancient times, mostly through traditional medicine. The present work highlights the importance of this plant in the treatment of MetS related maladies and points out the importance of elucidating new compounds and their validation for the interactions of nutraceutical compounds which could be related to MetS.

Abstract
Diabetes is a serious condition that is linked to the development of oxidative stress causing among many other effects, kidney failure and pancreatic disorders. However, traditional plant-based remedies can be considered an alternative to diabetes healing. In this context, this study was oriented towards evaluating the protective effect of the flowers of Opuntia microdasys Lehm. collected in Tunisia at a biochemical and histological level on kidneys and pancreas of a type 2 diabetic rats. Renal and pancreatic toxicities were induced in diabetic male Wistar rats by fructose alloxan. Diabetic rats were treated with an extract obtained from flowers collected at post-flowering stage (OFP) (100 and 200 mg kg-1 bw) and metformin (100 mg kg-1 bw) for 28 days. Oral administration of OFP at 200 mg kg-1 bw showed significant reduction of the uric acid, urea, creatinine, amylase, lipase, and glycated hemoglobin (HbAlc). The levels of SOD, CAT, and GPx were increased, while protein carbonyls and lipid peroxidation TBARS levels were reduced in the kidney and pancreas. The altered kidney and pancreas histology were restored in rats treated with OFP. Thus, the present study demonstrated that OFP has antihyperglycemic activity in fructose-alloxan-induced diabetic rats.

Abstract
Opuntia species are utilized as local medicinal interventions for chronic diseases and as food sources mainly because they possess nutritional properties and biological activities. The Opuntia plant is distributed worldwide and has great economic potential. Differences in Opuntia species phytochemical composition exist between wild and domesticated species, and within species. Opuntia aerial and underground parts exhibit beneficial properties due to their phenolic content, other antioxidants (for example ascorbate), pigments (carotenoids, betalains), and other unidentified components. This work comprehensively reviews the phytochemical composition of the different aerial and underground plant parts of Opuntia species. The applications of Opuntia compounds and their biological activities are also discussed. Other topical aspects covered include Opuntia spp. taurine composition, Opuntia side effects, Opuntia by-products valorisation and the role of Opuntia spp. in tackling antimicrobial resistance. Although biological activities have been extensively researched, much less information is available on reaction mechanisms, herbal mixtures toxicology and commercialisation prospects - aspects which should be considered for future research in this area.

Abstract
CONTEXT Diabetic liver injury is a serious diabetic complication. The alterations of intestinal microbiota play an important role in induction and promotion of liver injury progression. Physalis alkekengi L. var. francheti (Mast.) Makino (Solanaceae) has been used as a water decoction for treating diabetes. OBJECTIVE To study the effects of a polysaccharide (PPSB) from Physalis alkekengi var. francheti on liver injury and intestinal microflora in type-2 diabetic mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Streptozotocin (160 mg/kg) was injected i.p. for 3 days to build model. The diabetic mice were randomly divided into four groups together with control group (10 mice in each group). The doses of PPSB were 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. After 5 weeks administration, level of blood glucose, ALT and AST were measured. Alterations of intestinal microflora, and protein expression of TGF-β1, TNF-α and DCN were detected. RESULTS Level of blood glucose decreased from (25.38 ± 2.21) mmol/L to (18.01 ± 2.53) mmol/L, ALT and AST decreased to (24.67 ± 4.86) U/L and (30.84 ± 7.50) U/L in PPSB-H group. Lactobacillus, Clostridium butyricum, and Bacteroides increased remarkably with increasing concentration of PPSB, but Enterobacter was inhibited. The relative expression of TGF-β1 and TNF-α decreased to (0.70 ± 0.17) and (0.39 ± 0.06), and the expression of DCN increased to (0.65 ± 0.13). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Probiotics have been promoted by PPSB, and protein expressions have been modulated in the progression of liver injury. PPSB could be used as a natural agent for treating diabetic liver injury and intestinal microflora imbalance.

Abstract
CONTEXT Diabetes is a serious endocrine and metabolic disorder. Food supplements attract people's attention in mitigating health problems from the aspect of gastrointestinal microflora. Maydis stigma (Zea mays subsp. mays L. [Poaceae]), has been used as water decoction for treating diabetes in folk medicine. It has great potential, and feasibly a stable form of Maydis stigma commercial products could be developed to fulfil the health food market. OBJECTIVE To study the effects of Maydis stigma polysaccharide (MSP) on the intestinal microflora in type-2 diabetes (T2D). MATERIALS AND METHODS MSP was fractioned from Maydis stigma by distilled water, purified by DEAE-52 Cellulose chromatography and Sephadex G-200 gel column. Streptozotocin (160 mg/kg) was intraperitoneal injected for 3 days to build model. The diabetic mice were randomly divided into five groups together with control group (10 mice in each group). The doses of MSP were 400, 600 and 800 mg/kg, respectively. After 5 weeks of administration, antidiabetic effects and intestinal microflora balance restoring activities were evaluated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. RESULTS Blood glucose levels of MSP-treated groups showed extremely significant hypoglycemic effects (p < 0.01), body weight increased showed extremely significant (p < 0.01) differences. Bacteroides, Lactobacillus and Prevotella were dominant organisms in the intestinal tract. The quality and quantity of Lactobacillus and Bacteroides genus increased remarkably with increasing concentration of MSP. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Experimental results of this study suggest that MSP has the significant potential to be used as a natural agent for treating T2D and restoring the intestinal microflora balance.

Abstract
In this study, a novel water-soluble polysaccharide fraction with molecular weight of 6479.1kDa was isolated from the fruits of Opuntia dillenii Haw., which consisted of rhamnose, xylose, mannose and glucose in the molar ratio of 14.99:1.14:1.00:6.47. The protective effect of O. dillenii Haw. fruits polysaccharide (ODFP) against oxidative damage in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats was investigated. The results showed that oral administration of ODFP significantly decreased food intake, water intake, urine production, organ weights and blood glucose level, and increased body weight in STZ-induced diabetic rats. ODFP also significantly increased the activities of SOD, GPx and CAT, and decreased malondialdehyde level in serum, liver, kidney, and pancreas in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Moreover, histopathological examination showed that ODFP could markedly improve the structure integrity of pancreatic islet tissue in STZ-induced diabetic rats. These results suggest that ODFP have hypoglycemic and antioxidant properties and can protect rats from STZ-induced oxidative damage.

Abstract
Opuntia ficus-indica, commonly referred to as prickly pear or nopal cactus, is a dicotyledonous angiosperm plant. It belongs to the Cactaceae family and is characterized by its remarkable adaptation to arid and semi-arid climates in tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. In the last decade, compelling evidence for the nutritional and health benefit potential of this cactus has been provided by academic scientists and private companies. Notably, its rich composition in polyphenols, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids and amino acids has been highlighted through the use of a large panel of extraction methods. The identified natural cactus compounds and derivatives were shown to be endowed with biologically relevant activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antimicrobial and neuroprotective properties. The present review is aimed at stressing the major classes of cactus components and their medical interest through emphasis on some of their biological effects, particularly those having the most promising expected health benefit and therapeutic impacts.

Abstract
Nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica) cladodes are recommended for their therapeutic properties; their maturity stage may affect their biological properties. Cladodes of three maturity stages, from the same crop and location, were dehydrated and evaluated for some of their physicochemical and nutritional characteristics and antidiabetic properties. The flours of small and medium cladodes (SCF and MCF, respectively) had higher contents of dietary fiber, water absorption, swelling, and viscosity compared to those of the large cladode flour (LCF). Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, treated with MCF and SCF (doses of 50 mg/kg body weight), showed reduction of postprandial blood glucose on 46.0 and 23.6%, respectively (p < 0.05), in relation to the control; and LCF had no significant effect. In vitro, glucose diffusion tests showed similar ranking by the two former samples, whereas the latter was close to the control. Cladode maturity stages showed different fiber content and produced suspensions with differences in viscosity, which may affect in vitro and in vivo glucose responses.

Abstract
Vaccinium bracteatum Thunb. (VBT) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The anti-diabetic activity of VBT leaves' polysaccharide (VBTLP) is studied in this paper. The results indicated VBTLP had a dose-dependent decrease on the blood glucose (BG) level, and the time effect of VBTLP on BG level was also significant. The insulin level of high dose group (HDG) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of model control (MC) group. Compared to MC, HDG and lose dose group (LDG) had significantly lower (p<0.05) TC and LDL-C levels, however, TG and HDL-C levels are similar. Compared to non-diabetic control (NC), HDG and LDG had similar plasma lipid levels except for higher LDL-C level. Although body weights of LDG and HDG were significant lower (p<0.05) than that of NC from week 2 to week 6, they were similar to that of PC. The results indicate VBTLP possesses a potential hypoglycemic effect in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the most effective hypoglycemic component of polysaccharides from Opuntia dillenii Haw. by preliminary screening and to specifically study the antidiabetic effects of O. dillenii polysaccharide (ODP)-Ia in mice with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. Three kinds of ODPs - ODP-Ia, ODP-Ib, and ODP-II' - were isolated by using an ultrasonic extraction method and diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-Sepharose fast-flow column chromatography. The mice were administered ODPs for 3 weeks. Gavage administration of ODP-Ia significantly decreased (P<0.05) their intake of food and water; the fasting levels of blood glucose (BG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), plasma urea nitrogen (PUN), and malondialdehyde (MDA); and the activity of glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase). In contrast, it significantly increased (P<0.05) the body weights, hepatic glycogen (HG) levels, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, and the hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in diabetic mice. However, ODP-Ia did not significantly increase insulin levels in the mice with STZ-induced diabetes. We propose that ODP-Ia exerts its antihyperglycemic effect by protecting the liver from peroxidation damage and by maintaining tissue function, thereby improving the sensitivity and response of target cells in diabetic mice to insulin.

Abstract
Dioscorea is a traditional medicinal food in Asia. This study investigated the anti-insulin resistance of dioscorea polysaccharide (DPS) in inflammatory factor (tumor necrosis factor-α; TNF-α) induced mouse normal liver FL83B cells. Insulin resistance was induced by treating cells with TNF-α (20 ng/mL) for 5 h; subsequently, the medium was replaced with insulin and DPS for 60 min of incubation (model 1; alleviating group). In addition, cells were cotreated with TNF-α and DPS for 5 h in model 2 (preventing group). DPS effectively increased glucose uptake and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) expression of insulin-resistant cells. Furthermore, DPS stimulated insulin receptor substrate (IRS) tyrosyl phosphorylation and increased p-Akt level to alleviate insulin resistance in models 1 and 2. Finally, the possible mechanism of DPS promoting insulin sensitivity in TNF-α-induced FL83B cells was investigated in this study. DPS may attenuate c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and insulin resistance caused by TNF-α induction; therefore, DPS also elevated the levels of p-IRS(Tyr) and p-Akt(Ser) to improve insulin sensitivity in the TNF-α-induced FL83B cells.

Abstract
Three new compounds, 1-3, and 20 known compounds were isolated from the AcOEt and BuOH extract of edible Opuntia Milpa Alta. The petroleum ether extract was examined by GC and MS. A total of 26 compounds were identified, representing 95.6% of the total extract, phytosterol (36.03%) being the most abundant component, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (18.57%) represented the second largest group, followed by phytol (12.28%), palmitic acid, palmitate (13.54%), vitamin E (4.51%), and other compounds (7.47%). The effects of various extracts from edible Opuntia Milpa Alta (petroleum ether extract, AcOEt extract, BuOH extract, aqueous extract, H₂O parts) and the positive control (received dimethylbiguanide) were tested on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. The results indicated that all the treatment groups could significantly decrease blood glucose levels in STZ-induced diabetic mice compared to the model control group (P<0.01), except the aqueous extract group (P<0.05). Especially, the petroleum ether extract group and the positive control group showed remarkable decrease of blood glucose levels. Taken together, the results indicate that the petroleum ether extract is the major hypoglycemic part in edible Opuntia Milpa Alta, which may be developed to a potential natural hypoglycemic functional ingredient.
