Hesperidin from Orange Peel as a Promising Skincare Bioactive: An Overview

The pursuit for better skin health, driven by collective and individual perceptions, has led to the demand for sustainable skincare products. Environmental factors and lifestyle choices can accelerate skin aging, causing issues like inflammation, wrinkles, elasticity loss, hyperpigmentation, and dryness. The skincare industry is innovating to meet consumers' requests for cleaner and natural options. Simultaneously, environmental issues concerning waste generation have been leading to sustainable strategies based on the circular economy. A noteworthy solution consists of citrus by-product valorization, as such by-products can be used as a source of bioactive molecules. Citrus processing, particularly, generates substantial waste amounts (around 50% of the whole fruit), causing unprecedented environmental burdens. Hesperidin, a flavonoid abundant in orange peels, is considered to hold immense potential for clean skin health product applications due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic properties. This review explores hesperidin extraction and purification methodologies as well as key skincare application areas: (i) antiaging and skin barrier enhancement, (ii) UV radiation-induced damage, (iii) hyperpigmentation and depigmentation conditions, (iv) wound healing, and (v) skin cancer and other cutaneous diseases. This work's novelty lies in the comprehensive coverage of hesperidin's promising skincare applications while also demonstrating its potential as a sustainable ingredient from a circular economy approach.

Biodegradable nano-reinforced packaging with improved functionality to extend the freshness and longevity of Plums Oemleria cerasiformis

Food packaging reinforced with Zn-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with enhanced prerequisite film-forming and biodegradable traits was prepared to augment fresh food storage. Pure and tailored metal (Zinc, Copper, and Selenium) doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and analyzed through multiple characterization techniques (optical spectra, XRD patterns (X-Ray Diffraction), Dynamic Light Scattering, and Scanning Electron Microscopy). The synthesized nanoparticles were tested for their Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations, antimicrobial potential against common lethal food pathogens, and cytotoxicity. Compared to Cu- and Se-doped nanoparticles, Zn-doped TiO2 nanoparticles displayed the most potent antimicrobial activity with insignificant cytotoxicity and were incorporated into the food packaging materials. The developed nano-reinforced food packaging efficaciously augmented the freshness of plums (Oemleria cerasiformis) for 16 days (42 ± 2 °C). The physicomechanical characterization of the nano-reinforced packaging establishes its utility in food packaging applications. The developed biodegradable packaging undergoes complete decomposition within 12 days of storage in natural soil.

Interactions between tea polyphenols and nutrients in food

Tea polyphenols (TPs) are important secondary metabolites in tea and are active in the food and drug industry because of their rich biological activities. In diet and food production, TPs are often in contact with other food nutrients, affecting their respective physicochemical properties and functional activity. Therefore, the interaction between TPs and food nutrients is a very important topic. In this review, we describe the interactions between TPs and food nutrients such as proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids, highlight the forms of their interactions, and discuss the changes in structure, function, and activity resulting from their interactions.

Preparation and physicochemical properties characterization of hesperetin-grafted pectin conjugate

Different ratios of hesperetin (HT) were successfully grafted onto pectin from basic water (PB) molecules via free radical-induced reaction. The structure of PB-HT conjugates was characterized by ultraviolet spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Results indicated that HT was successfully grafted onto pectin molecules, and PB-HT-0.5 showed the highest HT content (103.18 ± 2.76 mg/g). Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that HT crystals showed good thermal resistance and could improve the thermal stability of PB-HT conjugates. Additionally, PB-HT conjugates showed good cytocompatibility and blood compatibility. This study provides a novel and efficient method to synthesize hesperetin-grafted pectin conjugate, which showed potential application in the fields of functional foods in the future.

Versatile functionalization of pectic conjugate: From design to biomedical applications

Pectin exists extensively in nature and has attracted much attention in biological applications for its unique chemical and physical characteristics. Functionalized pectin, especially pectic conjugates, has given many possibilities for pectin to improve its properties and bioactivity as well as to deliver active molecules. To better exploit this strategy of pectic functionalization, this review presents in detail the structural modifications of pectin, different synthetic methods, and design strategies of pectic conjugates involving both traditional chemical and "green" approaches. Here, the research ideas and applications of pectic prodrugs as well as the development of preparation based on pectic conjugates are reviewed, with emphasis on crosslinking systems of functionalized pectin and nanosystems based on self-assembly techniques. We hope this review will provide comprehensive and valuable information for the functionalization and systematization of the pectic conjugate from synthesis to application.

Effect of Biotic Elicitors on the Growth, Antioxidant Activity and Metabolites Accumulation in In Vitro Propagated Shoots of Pueraria tuberosa

Pueraria tuberosa contains a wide range of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, alkaloids, and phytosterols, which make it valuable to the pharmaceutical and food industries. Elicitor compounds trigger the defense mechanisms in plants and are widely used to increase the yield of bioactive molecules in in vitro cultures. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of biotic elicitors such as yeast extract (YE), pectin (PEC), and alginate (ALG) on growth, antioxidant activity, and metabolite accumulation in in vitro propagated shoots of P. tuberosa. The elicitors applied to shoot cultures of P. tuberosa significantly increased biomass (shoot number, fresh weight, and dry weight), and metabolites such as protein, carbohydrates, chlorophyll, total phenol (TP), and total flavonoid (TF) contents, as well as antioxidant activity compared to untreated control. Biomass, TP, and TF contents, as well as antioxidant activity, were most significant in cultures treated with 100 mg/L PEC. In contrast, chlorophyll, protein, and carbohydrate increased most in cultures treated with 200 mg/L ALG. Application of 100 mg/L of PEC led to the accumulation of high amounts of isoflavonoids including puerarin (220.69 μg/g), daidzin (2935.55 μg/g), genistin (5612 μg/g), daidzein (479.81 μg/g), and biochanin-A (111.511 μg/g) as analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total isoflavonoids content of 100 mg/L PEC treated shoots was obtained as 9359.56 μg/g, 1.68-fold higher than in vitro propagated shoots without elicitors (5573.13 μg/g) and 2.77-fold higher than shoots of the mother plant (3380.17 μg/g). The elicitor concentrations were optimized as 200 mg/L YE, 100 mg/L PEC, and 200 mg/L ALG. Overall, this study showed that the application of different biotic elicitors resulted in better growth, antioxidant activity, and accumulation of metabolites in P. tuberosa, which could lead to obtaining phytopharmaceutical advantages in the future.

Polyphenol-Dietary Fiber Conjugates from Fruits and Vegetables: Nature and Biological Fate in a Food and Nutrition Perspective

In the past few years, numerous studies have investigated the correlation between polyphenol intake and the prevention of several chronic diseases. Research regarding the global biological fate and bioactivity has been directed to extractable polyphenols that can be found in aqueous-organic extracts, obtained from plant-derived foods. Nevertheless, significant amounts of non-extractable polyphenols, closely associated with the plant cell wall matrix (namely with dietary fibers), are also delivered during digestion, although they are ignored in biological, nutritional, and epidemiological studies. These conjugates have gained the spotlight because they may exert their bioactivities for much longer than extractable polyphenols. Additionally, from a technological food perspective, polyphenols combined with dietary fibers have become increasingly interesting as they could be useful for the food industry to enhance technological functionalities. Non-extractable polyphenols include low molecular weight compounds such as phenolic acids and high molecular weight polymeric compounds such as proanthocyanidins and hydrolysable tannins. Studies concerning these conjugates are scarce, and usually refer to the compositional analysis of individual components rather than to the whole fraction. In this context, the knowledge and exploitation of non-extractable polyphenol-dietary fiber conjugates will be the focus of this review, aiming to access their potential nutritional and biological effect, together with their functional properties.

Effects of in vitro digestion and fecal fermentation on physico-chemical properties and metabolic behavior of polysaccharides from Clitocybe squamulosa

The aim of this study was to establish a human digestion model in vitro to explore the degradation characteristics of a novel high-purity polysaccharide from Clitocybe squamulosa (CSFP2). The results showed that the content of reducing sugars (C_R ) of CSFP2 increased from 0.13 to 0.23 mg/mL, the molecular weight (Mw) of CSFP2 decreased significantly during the saliva-gastrointestinal digestion. The constituent monosaccharides of CSFP2, including galactose, glucose, and mannose, were stable during in vitro digestion, but their molar ratios were changed from 0.023: 0.737: 0.234 to 0.496: 0.478: 0.027. The surface of CSFP2 changes from a rough flaky structure to a scattered flocculent or rod-shaped structure after the gastrointestinal digestion. However, the apparent viscosity of CSFP2 was overall stable during in vitro digestion. Moreover, CSFP2 still maintains its strong antioxidant capacity after saliva-gastrointestinal digestion. The results showed that CSFP2 can be partially decomposed during digestion. Meanwhile, some physico-chemical properties of the fermentation broth containing CSFP2 changed significantly after gut microbiota fermentation. For example, the pH value (from 8.46 to 4.72) decreased significantly (p < 0.05) after 48 h of fermentation. the OD ₆₀₀ value increased first and then decreased (from 2.00 to 2.68 to 1.32) during 48-h fermentation. In addition, CSFP2 could also increase the amounts of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) (from 5.5 to 37.15 mmol/L) during fermentation (in particular, acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid). Furthermore, the relative abundances of Bacteriodes, Bifidobacterium, Catenibacterium, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, Megasphaera, Prevotella, Megamonas, and Lactobacillus at genus level were markedly increased with the intervention of CSFP2. These results provided a theoretical basis for the further development of functional foods related to CSFP2.

Two Natural Flavonoid Substituted Polysaccharides from Tamarix chinensis: Structural Characterization and Anticomplement Activities

Two novel natural flavonoid substituted polysaccharides (MBAP-1 and MBAP-2) were obtained from Tamarix chinensis Lour. and characterized by HPGPC, methylation, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-IT-MSⁿ), and NMR analysis. The results showed that MBAP-1 was a homogenous heteropolysaccharide with a backbone of 4)-β-d-Glcp-(1→ and →3,4,6)-β-d-Glcp-(1→. MBAP-2 was also a homogenous polysaccharide which possessed a backbone of →3)-α-d-Glcp-(1→, →4)-β-d-Glcp-(1→ and →3,4)-β-d-Glcp-2-OMe-(1→. Both the two polysaccharides were substituted by quercetin and exhibited anticomplement activities in vitro. However, MBAP-1 (CH₅₀: 0.075 ± 0.004 mg/mL) was more potent than MBAP-2 (CH₅₀: 0.249 ± 0.006 mg/mL) and its reduced product, MBAP-1R (CH₅₀: 0.207 ± 0.008 mg/mL), indicating that multiple monosaccharides and uronic acids might contribute to the anticomplement activity of the flavonoid substituted polysaccharides of T. chinensis. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of MBAP-1 was also more potent than that of MBAP-2. In conclusion, these two flavonoid substituted polysaccharides from T. chinensis were found to be potential oxidant and complement inhibitors.

Effect of pectin on the properties of nanoemulsions stabilized by sodium caseinate at neutral pH

The effect of different concentrations of low methoxyl pectin (LMP) on lipid oxidation and physical stability of sodium caseinate (CAS) stabilized nanoemulsions under neutral pH was investigated. The addition of pectin at low concentration (≤ 0.10 wt%) had no significant effect on the average size of nanoemulsions, but a slight size increase and phase separation were observed at higher concentrations of pectin (≥ 0.25 wt%). This result suggests that LMP can not adsorb at the oil/water interfacial CAS membrane at neutral pH. However, in the presence of LMP, the physical stability of nanoemulsions against high salt concentrations and freeze-thaw cycles was significantly enhanced. Moreover, nanoemulsions containing pectin have a better ability to inhibit lipid and protein oxidation than nanoemulsions without pectin after 3 weeks, and the lowest lipid hydroperoxide content was observed for nanoemulsions containing 0.25 wt% pectin.

Exploring the Potential Pharmacological Mechanism of Hesperidin and Glucosyl Hesperidin against COVID-19 Based on Bioinformatics Analyses and Antiviral Assays

The development of anti-COVID-19 drugs has become the top priority since the outbreak of the epidemic, and Traditional Chinese medicine plays an important role in reducing mortality. Here, hesperidin and its glycosylation product, glucosyl hesperidin were selected to determine their antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 due to their structural specificity as reported. To be specific, their binding ability with ACE2, M, S, RBD and N proteins were verified with both in silico and wet lab methods, i.e., molecular docking and binding affinity tests, including biolayer interferometry assay (BLI) and isothermal titration calorimetry assay (ITC). Moreover, systematic pharmacological analysis was conducted to reveal their pharmacological mechanism in treating COVID-19. Finally, their antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 was determined in vitro in a biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratory. The results demonstrated their outstanding binding affinity with ACE2, M, S and RBD proteins, while showed barely unobserved binding with N protein, indicating their key roles in influencing the invasion and early replication phase of SARS-CoV-2. In addition, both hesperidin and glucosyl hesperidin were shown to have a great impact on immune, inflammation and virus infection induced by COVID-19 according to the systematic pharmacological analysis. Moreover, the IC50s of hesperidin and glucosyl hesperidin against SARS-CoV-2 were further determined (51.5 [Formula: see text]M and 5.5 mM, respectively) with cell-based in vitro assay, suggesting their great anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity. All in all, present research was the first to verify the binding ability of hesperidin and glucosyl hesperidin with SARS-CoV-2 proteins with both in silico and wet-lab methods and proposed the possibility of applying hesperidin and glucosyl hesperidin to treat COVID-19.

Polyphenol-Polysaccharide Complex: Preparation, Characterization and Potential Utilization in Food and Health

Polysaccharides and polyphenols coexist in many plant-based food products. Polyphenol-polysaccharide interactions may affect the physicochemical, functional, and physiological properties, such as digestibility, bioavailability, and stability, of plant-based foods. In this review, the interactions (physically or covalently linked) between the selected polysaccharides and polyphenols are summarized. The preparation and structural characterization of the polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates, their structural-interaction relationships, and the effects of the interactions on functional and physiological properties of the polyphenol and polysaccharide molecules are reviewed. Moreover, potential applications of polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates are discussed. This review aids in a comprehensive understanding of the synthetic strategy, beneficial bioactivity, and potential application of polyphenol-polysaccharide complexes. Pectin in biomedical and drug delivery applications: A review

Natural macromolecules have attracted increasing attention due to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, and biodegradability. Pectin is one of the few polysaccharides with biomedical activity, consequently a candidate in biomedical and drug delivery Applications. Rhamnogalacturonan-II, a smaller component in pectin, plays a major role in biomedical activities. The ubiquitous presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in pectin contribute to their hydrophilicity and, hence, to the favorable biocompatibility, low toxicity, and biodegradability. However, pure pectin-based materials present undesirable swelling and corrosion properties. The hydrophilic groups, via coordination, electrophilic addition, esterification, transesterification reactions, can contribute to pectin's physicochemical properties. Here the properties, extraction, and modification of pectin, which are fundamental to biomedical and drug delivery applications, are reviewed. Moreover, the synthesis, properties, and performance of pectin-based hybrid materials, composite materials, and emulsions are elaborated. The comprehensive review presented here can provide valuable information on pectin and its biomedical and drug delivery applications.

Molecular interaction between pectin and catechin/procyanidin in simulative juice model: Insights from spectroscopic, morphology, and antioxidant activity

The interactions between polysaccharides and phenolics in foods affect their physicochemical properties and bioactivity. Pectin and catechin/procyanidin present in plants ubiquitously and attracting more attentions for the potential health benefits. This work investigates the interactions between high methoxyl pectin and catechin/procyanidin in a simulative juice model using multiple microscopic and spectroscopic approaches and their influences on the antioxidant activity of phenolics were evaluated in the Caco-2 cells model. The results showed that pectin with either of phenolic compunds exhibited lower transmittance, zeta potential, viscosity, and larger particle size than it alone. The morphology of pectin complexes with either of phenolics under experimental conditions (pH = 3.5) was observed. The ΔH° (-6.821 kJ mol^-1 ) and ΔS° (6.357×10^-2  kJ mol^-1 ) indicated that pectin interacts with procyanidin via electrostatic interaction, whereas hydrophobic interaction was the dominant drive force between pectin and catechin (ΔH° = 1.422 kJ mol^-1 ; ΔS° = 13.048 × 10^-2  kJ mol^-1 ). The antioxidant activities of catechin/procyanidin decreased while binding with pectin based on indexes of glutathione peroxidase, total superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, and malondialdehyde. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The findings of this work indicated that the physicochemical property of pectin and the antioxidant activity of catechin/procyanidin were influenced by the interactions between pectin and catechin/procyanidin in a simulative food system. This study provides insights into the molecular interactions between pectin and phenolics in a simulative food system.

Catechin-grafted arabinoxylan conjugate: Preparation, structural characterization and property investigation

In this study, a high molecular weight arabinoxylan (AX, Mw: 694 kDa) from wheat bran was alkaline extracted and covalently linked with Catechin (CA) by free radical catalytic reaction. Comparing to AX, arabinoxylan-catechin (AX-CA) conjugates demonstrated an extra UV-vis absorption peak at 274 nm, a new FT-IR absorption band at 1516 cm^-1 and new proton signals at 6.5-7.5 ppm, which all confirmed the covalently linked structure. Grafting CA onto AX not only decreased the molecular weight, thermal stability and apparent viscosity of AX, but also enhanced its inhibition effects on starch digestibility in vitro. The in vitro fermentation test with pig feces showed that the degradation & utilization rate of AX, the total short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) and acetic acid levels produced all were significantly delayed after grafting. This study provided a novel approach to synthesize AX-CA conjugates that could be a novel dietary fiber of enhanced functional/bioactive properties using in the fields of functional foods and medicine.

Highly efficient synthesis and characterization of starch aldehyde-catechin conjugate with potent antioxidant activity

In this study, cassava starch aldehyde was functionalized with catechin through acid catalyzed condensation reaction. The structural characterization, stability and antioxidant activity of starch aldehyde-catechin conjugates were investigated. Thin layer chromatography revealed the conjugates did not contain free catechin. UV-vis spectra of the conjugates exhibited an absorption band at 280 nm, attributing to the B-ring of catechin moiety. Fourier-transform infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated the conjugation occurred between the H-6/H-8 of catechin A-ring and the aldehyde groups of starch aldehyde. X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that the conjugates had an amorphous structure. Scanning electron microscopy showed the conjugates were fragmentary slices with rough surfaces. Notably, the conjugates were more stable than catechin in phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.4). In addition, the conjugates could not be digested in simulated saliva, gastric and small intestinal juices. The reducing power and free radical scavenging activity of starch aldehyde were remarkably elevated by conjugating with catechin. Meanwhile, the conjugates were non-cytotoxic to RAW264.7 mouse macrophage cells and possessed higher resistant starch contents than starch. Our results suggest starch aldehyde-catechin conjugates can be used as antioxidants in food industry.

Insight into anti-oxidative carbohydrate polymers from medicinal plants: Structure-activity relationships, mechanism of actions and interactions with bovine serum albumin

Recently, research associated with natural anti-oxidants leads to the chemical characterization of many compounds possessing strong anti-oxidant activity. Among these anti-oxidants, naturally occurring carbohydrate polymers containing pectic arabinogalactans esterified with phenolic acids in monomeric and dimeric forms are noteworthy. The presence of highly branched arabinogalactan type II side chains and sugar linked phenolic acid residues have been resolved as important parameters. The anti-oxidant activity of these compounds depend on their ability to convert free radicals into stable by-products and themselves oxidized to more stable and less reactive resonance stabilized radicals. Moreover, these carbohydrate polymers form water soluble stable complexes with protein. Such findings support their applications in a diversity of fields including food industry and pharmacy. This review highlights experimental evidences supporting that the carbohydrate polymers containing phenolic polysaccharides may become promising drug candidate for the prevention of aging and age related diseases.

Review of Evidence Available on Hesperidin-Rich Products as Potential Tools against COVID-19 and Hydrodynamic Cavitation-Based Extraction as a Method of Increasing Their Production

Based on recent computational and experimental studies, hesperidin, a bioactive flavonoid abundant in citrus peel, stands out for its high binding affinity to the main cellular receptors of SARS-CoV-2, outperforming drugs already recommended for clinical trials. Thus, it is very promising for prophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19, along with other coexistent flavonoids such as naringin, which could help restraining the proinflammatory overreaction of the immune system. Controlled hydrodynamic cavitation processes showed the highest speed, effectiveness and efficiency in the integral and green aqueous extraction of flavonoids, essential oils and pectin from citrus peel waste. After freeze-drying, the extracted pectin showed high quality and excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activities, attributed to flavonoids and essential oils adsorbed and concentrated on its surface. This study reviews the recent evidence about hesperidin as a promising molecule, and proposes a feasible and affordable process based on hydrodynamic cavitation for the integral aqueous extraction of citrus peel waste resulting in hesperidin-rich products, either aqueous extracts or pectin tablets. The uptake of this process on a relevant scale is urged, in order to achieve large-scale production and distribution of hesperidin-rich products. Meanwhile, experimental and clinical studies could determine the effective doses either for therapeutic and preventive purposes.

A Novel Pectic Polysaccharide of Jujube Pomace: Structural Analysis and Intracellular Antioxidant Activities

After extraction from jujube pomace and purification by two columns (DEAE-Sepharose Fast Flow and Sepharcyl S-300), the structure of SAZMP4 was investigated by HPGPC, GC, FI-IR, GC-MS, NMR, SEM, and AFM. Analysis determined that SAZMP4 (Mw = 28.94 kDa) was a pectic polysaccharide mainly containing 1,4-linked GalA (93.48%) with side chains of 1,2,4-linked Rha and 1,3,5-linked Ara and terminals of 1-linked Rha and 1-linked Ara, which might be the homogalacturonan (HG) type with side chains of the RG-I type, corresponding to the results of NMR. In AFM and SEM images, self-assembly and aggregation of SAZMP4 were respectively observed indicating its structural features. The antioxidant activity of SAZMP4 against H₂O₂-induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells was determined by activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, indicating SAZMP4 can be a natural antioxidant. Also, a better water retention capacity and thermal stability of SAZMP4 was observed based on DSC analysis, which could be applied in food industry as an additive.

Effect of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles on The Physicochemical Properties of Pectin Packaging Material for Strawberry Wrapping

Citrus peel pectin was used to prepare films (cast with or without glycerol) containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Nanoparticles reduced significantly the particle size, and had no effect on the Zeta potential of pectin solutions. Mechanical characterization demonstrates that pectin+nanoparticles containing films slightly increased tensile strength and significantly decreased the Young's modulus in comparison to films made only of pectin. However, elongation at the break increased in the pectin+nanoparticles films cast in the presence of glycerol, while both Young's modulus and tensile strength were reduced. Moreover, nanoparticles were able to reduce the barrier properties of pectin films prepared with or without glycerol, whereas positively affected the thermal stability of pectin films and the seal strength. The 0.6% pectin films reinforced or not with 3% nanoparticles in the presence of 30% glycerol were used to wrap strawberries in order to extend the fruit's shelf-life, over a period of eighty days, by improving their physicochemical properties.

Structural characteristics, rheological properties, and biological activities of polysaccharides from different cultivars of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) collected in China

In order to well understand the physicochemical characteristics and biological activities of polysaccharides (OPPs) from different cultivars of okra collected in China, the chemical characteristics, rheological properties, antioxidant activities, in vitro binding properties, and in vitro inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase of polysaccharides from five representative okra cultivars, including 'Lvjian', 'Kalong8', 'Shuiguo', 'Taiwanwufu', and 'Kalong3', were investigated and compared. Results showed that the constituent monosaccharides of OPPs were similar, which composed of rhamnose, galacturonic acid, galactose, and arabinose. However, their weight-average molecular weights varied from 2.76 × 10³ to 4.20 × 10³ kDa, and from 0.11 × 10³ to 0.90 × 10³ kDa, respectively. The uronic acids and degrees of esterification of OPPs ranged from 39.32% to 61.68%, and from 21.66% to 30.02%, respectively. OPPs exhibited typical shear-thinning behavior and viscoelastic properties. Furthermore, OPPs exhibited remarkable antioxidant activities, in vitro binding capacities, and inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase, which might be attributed to their relatively high content of uronic acids, high degrees of esterification, and high molecular weights. Results are helpful for better understanding of the physicochemical structures and bioactivities of OPPs, and OPPs had good application prospects as functional food ingredients for industrial applications.

Biological Activity and Pharmacological Application of Pectic Polysaccharides: A Review

Pectin is a polymer with a core of alternating α-1,4-linked d-galacturonic acid and α-1,2-l-rhamnose units, as well as a variety of neutral sugars such as arabinose, galactose, and lesser amounts of other sugars. Currently, native pectins have been compared to modified ones due to the development of natural medicines and health products. In this review, the results of a study of the bioactivity of pectic polysaccharides, including its various pharmacological applications, such as its immunoregulatory, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antibacterial, antioxidant and antitumor activities, have been summarized. The potential of pectins to contribute to the enhancement of drug delivery systems has been observed.

Effect of edible pectin-fish gelatin films containing the olive antioxidants hydroxytyrosol and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol on beef meat during refrigerated storage

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the addition of two antioxidants naturally present in olives, hydroxytyrosol (HT) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG), to a pectin-fish gelatin edible film on the preservation of raw beef meat during refrigerated storage. A new composite film that included beeswax was also prepared, resulting in a reduction in the film's oxygen permeability. Results showed that the meat samples wrapped with film containing antioxidants reduced the formation of oxidation products in the form of thiobarbituric acid reaction substances (TBARS) compared with control film without antioxidants. HT added at 0.5% to the film with beeswax suppressed the lipid oxidation of beef meat during 7 days of storage at 4 °C, possibly by the combined effect of acting as an oxygen barrier and the specific antioxidant activity. The interference of plasticizer agents (glycerol and sorbitol) incorporated to the film on the TBARS method was showed for the first time.

Recent advances in flavonoid-grafted polysaccharides: Synthesis, structural characterization, bioactivities and potential applications

Plant derived flavonoids have been demonstrated to possess many valuable biological functions. In recent years, flavonoids have been successfully conjugated with polysaccharides through different graft copolymerization methods including chemical coupling, enzyme catalysis, free radical mediated grafting, and acid catalyzed condensation reactions. The successful grafting of flavonoids onto polysaccharides can be confirmed by several instrumental methods. The conjugation of flavonoids can significantly improve the antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumor, hepatoprotective and enzyme inhibition properties of polysaccharides. Moreover, the applications of polysaccharides in food and pharmaceutical industries can be greatly broadened by grafting with flavonoids. Flavonoid-grafted polysaccharides can be developed as films for active packaging, hydrogels for controlled drug release, micelles for oral drug delivery, and emulsions for nutraceutical delivery. In general, the bioactivities and applications of conjugates are closely related to the type of flavonoid grafted, the grafting method used as well as the grafting efficiency. Recent advances in the synthesis, structural characterization, bioactivities and potential applications of flavonoid-grafted polysaccharides are summarized in this review.
