Modification of different molecular weights of chitosan by p-Coumaric acid: Preparation, characterization and effect of molecular weight on its water solubility and antioxidant property

A transparent p-coumaric acid-grafted-chitosan coating with antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifogging properties for fruit packaging applications

The study aimed to develop a novel, transparent and non-toxic coating with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antifogging properties. The p-coumaric acid-grafted chitosan (CS-PCA) was synthesized via a carbodiimide coupling reaction and then characterized. The CS-PCA coatings were further prepared using the casting method. The CS-PCA coatings obtained exhibited excellent transparency, UV-light barrier ability, and antifogging properties, as confirmed by spectroscopy and antifogging tests. The CS-PCA coatings showed stronger antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea compared to CS. The multifunctional coatings were further coated on the polyethylene cling film and their effectiveness was confirmed through a strawberry preservation test. The decay of the strawberries was reduced by CS-PCA coated film at room temperature.

Ionic liquids functionalized chitosan: An effective, rapid and green adsorbent for gold recovery

Thiosulfate has been considered as a more environmentally-friendly alternative to cyanide salts for the extraction of gold from gold ores and the development of affordable, green and efficient adsorbents for the isolation of gold-thiosulfate complex (Au(S2O3)23-) from the leaching solution remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, chitosan, a natural macromolecule, was selected as a carrier and chemically modified with ionic liquids. The ionic liquids modified chitosan showed greater adsorption capacity towards Au(S2O3)23- compared with pristine chitosan. The adsorption of Au(S2O3)23- on ionic liquid modified chitosan followed Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic models, involving an anion-exchange mechanism with liquid film diffusion as the rate-limiting step. The chitosan modified with butylimidazolium-based ionic liquid had an adsorption capacity of 5.0 mg g-1 for gold (10 mg L-1 of gold, pH 6, 2 g L-1 of adsorbent dosage), outperforming other reported adsorbents. The ionic liquid modified chitosan showed a high adsorption efficiency of up to 96.7 % for Au(S2O3)23- in an actual thiosulfate leaching solution with a desorption efficiency of 98.4 %, suggesting that the ionic liquid modified chitosan has the potential to be a eco-friendly, biocompatible and effective adsorbent for the recovery of Au(S2O3)23-.

Hydroxyl group-induced enhancement of antioxidant activity of resveratrol over pterostilbene by binding to lactoferrin

The reduced antioxidant capacity of trans-resveratrol (Res) than the second generation of Res, namely pterostilbene (Pte), severely prohibits its in-depth intriguing radical-scavenging applications in food formulations. Herein, a unique chemical structure-dependent strategy was proposed to specifically enhance the radical scavenging activity of Res over Pte, relying on the two more hydroxyl groups on the A-benzene ring of Res, thus facilitating its binding with lactoferrin (LF) to form stable complexes through more hydrogen bonds. We prepared LF-Res and LF-Pte complexes, revealed their binding mechanisms by multispectral analysis and molecular docking/dynamics simulations, further evaluated their antioxidant properties via ABTS and DPPH assays and a model of inhibiting apple browning, eventually elucidated their structure-binding-property relationships. This contribution offers a new approach to restore the antioxidant capability of Res, also paves the way to precisely regulate the fascinating bioactivities of hydrophobic compounds by protein-binding in a chemical structure-, especially hydroxyl group-dependent manner.

Physicochemical Properties of Inorganic and Hybrid Hydroxyapatite-Based Granules Modified with Citric Acid or Polyethylene Glycol

This study delves into the physicochemical properties of inorganic hydroxyapatite (HAp) and hybrid hydroxyapatite-chitosan (HAp-CTS) granules, also gold-enriched, which can be used as aggregates in biomicroconcrete-type materials. The impact of granules' surface modifications with citric acid (CA) or polyethylene glycol (PEG) was assessed. Citric acid modification induced increased specific surface area and porosity in inorganic granules, contrasting with reduced parameters in hybrid granules. PEG modification resulted in a slight increase in specific surface area for inorganic granules and a substantial rise for hybrid granules with gold nanoparticles. Varied effects on open porosity were observed based on granule type. Microstructural analysis revealed increased roughness for inorganic granules post CA modification, while hybrid granules exhibited smoother surfaces. Novel biomicroconcretes, based on α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) calcium phosphate cement and developed granules as aggregates within, were evaluated for compressive strength. Compressive strength assessments showcased significant enhancement with PEG modification, emphasizing its positive impact. Citric acid modification demonstrated variable effects, depending on granule composition. The incorporation of gold nanoparticles further enriched the multifaceted approach to enhancing calcium phosphate-based biomaterials for potential biomedical applications. This study demonstrates the pivotal role of surface modifications in tailoring the physicochemical properties of granules, paving the way for advanced biomicroconcretes with improved compressive strength for diverse biomedical applications.

Electrochemiluminescence Sensor Based on CTS-MoS2 and AB@CTS with Functionalized Luminol for Detection of Malathion Pesticide Residues

The accumulation of pesticide residues poses a significant threat to the health of people and the surrounding ecological systems. However, traditional methods are not only costly but require expertise in analysis. An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor was developed using chitosan and molybdenum disulfide (CTS-MoS2), along with acetylene black (AB@CTS) for the rapid detection of malathion residues. Due to the weak interaction force, simple composite may lead to uneven dispersion; MoS2 and AB were dissolved in CTS solution, respectively, and utilized the biocompatibility of CTS to interact with each other on the electrode. The MoS2 nanosheets provided a large specific surface area, enhancing the utilization rate of catalytic materials, while AB exhibited excellent conductivity. Additionally, the dendritic polylysine (PLL) contained numerous amino groups to load abundant luminol to catalyze hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). The proposed ECL aptasensor obtained a low detection limit of 2.75 × 10-3 ng/mL (S/N = 3) with a good detection range from 1.0 × 10-2 ng/mL to 1.0 × 103 ng/mL, demonstrating excellent specificity, repeatability, and stability. Moreover, the ECL aptasensor was successfully applied for detecting malathion pesticide residues in authentic samples with recovery rates ranging from 94.21% to 99.63% (RSD < 2.52%). This work offers valuable insights for advancing ECL sensor technology in future applications.

Strategies for the Preparation of Chitosan Derivatives for Antimicrobial, Drug Delivery, and Agricultural Applications: A Review

Chitosan has received much attention for its role in designing and developing novel derivatives as well as its applications across a broad spectrum of biological and physiological activities, owing to its desirable characteristics such as being biodegradable, being a biopolymer, and its overall eco-friendliness. The main objective of this review is to explore the recent chemical modifications of chitosan that have been achieved through various synthetic methods. These chitosan derivatives are categorized based on their synthetic pathways or the presence of common functional groups, which include alkylated, acylated, Schiff base, quaternary ammonia, guanidine, and heterocyclic rings. We have also described the recent applications of chitosan and its derivatives, along with nanomaterials, their mechanisms, and prospective challenges, especially in areas such as antimicrobial activities, targeted drug delivery for various diseases, and plant agricultural domains. The accumulation of these recent findings has the potential to offer insight not only into innovative approaches for the preparation of chitosan derivatives but also into their diverse applications. These insights may spark novel ideas for drug development or drug carriers, particularly in the antimicrobial, medicinal, and plant agricultural fields.

Advances in preparation, biomedical, and pharmaceutical applications of chitosan-based gold, silver, and magnetic nanoparticles: A review

During the last decades, the ever-increasing incidence of various diseases, like cancer, has led to a high rate of death worldwide. On the other hand, conventional modalities (such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy) have not indicated enough efficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Thus, potential novel approaches should be taken into consideration to pave the way for the suppression of diseases. Among novel approaches, biomaterials, like chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs, N-acetyl-glucosamine and D-glucosamine), have been approved by the FDA for some efficient pharmaceutical applications. These NPs owing to their physicochemical properties, modification with different molecules, biocompatibility, serum stability, less immune response, suitable pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, etc. have received deep attention among researchers and clinicians. More importantly, the impact of CS polysaccharide in the synthesis, preparation, and delivery of metallic NPs (like gold, silver, and magnetic NPs), and combination of CS with these metallic NPs can further facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Metallic NPs possess some features, like converting NIR photon energy into thermal energy and anti-microorganism capability, and can be a potential candidate for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in combination with CS NPs. These combined NPs would be efficient pharmaceuticals in the future.

Effect of thymol on properties of bionanocomposites from poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene succinate)/nanofibrillated cellulose for food packaging application

The present study developed the formulation of active bionanocomposites films endowed with the abilities of high biodegradability and antimicrobials for active packaging applications. The aim of this work was to prepare poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene succinate) (PLA/PBS) blended films reinforced with different concentrations of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and 9 % of thymol essential oil (EO) using the casting method. The active films were further evaluated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); as well as mechanical, physical, water vapour permeability (WVP), thermal analysis (TGA), biodegradation, morphological, and antimicrobial (% reduction of bacteria) testing. The tensile strength (TS) of PLA/PBS blend films increased by 12 % with the incorporation of 2 wt% of NFC. The PLA/PBS/NFC with 9 % thymol EO has a good water barrier performance with its tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus was 13.2 MPa, 13.1 %, and 513 MPa respectively. The presence of NFC promoted the disintegration of PLA/PBS films by 70.5 %. These films promoted the antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The study demonstrates that the developed films improved the qualities of chicken fillets and have great potential to be used as active bionanocomposites in food packaging applications.

Polyhydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV) with Phenolic Acids for Active Food Packaging

PHBV films incorporating 3, 6 and 9% ferulic acid (FA) or p-coumaric acid (PCA) were obtained by melt blending and compression moulding. The films' microstructures and thermal behaviours were analysed as well as their mechanical, optical and barrier properties. The overall and specific migration of the materials in different food simulants was also characterised. FA was homogeneously mixed with the polymer, whereas PCA was mainly dispersed as fine particles in the PHBV matrices due to its higher melting point. These structural features promoted differences in the physical properties of the films depending on the compound concentration. As the concentration of both compounds rose, the barrier capacity of the films to oxygen, and to a lesser extent water vapour, was enhanced. While FA promoted the extensibility of the films, 9% PCA enhanced their brittleness. Both compounds affected the crystallisation pattern of the polymer, promoting smaller crystalline formations and a slight decrease in crystallinity. Although the overall migration of every film formulation was lower than the overall migration limit (OML), the release of active compounds was dependent on the food simulant; almost total release was noted in ethanol containing simulants but was more limited in aqueous systems. Therefore, these films could be used as food contact materials, contributing to extending the food's shelf life.

Free Radical-Mediated Grafting of Natural Polysaccharides Such as Chitosan, Starch, Inulin, and Pectin with Some Polyphenols: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Bioactivities, and Applications-A Review

Polyphenols and polysaccharides are very important natural products with special physicochemical properties and extensive biological activities. Recently, polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates have been synthesized to overcome the limitations of polysaccharides and broaden their application range. Grafted copolymers are produced through chemical coupling, enzyme-mediated, and free radical-mediated methods, among which the free radical-induced grafting reaction is the most cost-effective, ecofriendly, safe, and plausible approach. Here, we review the grafting reactions of polysaccharides mediated by free radicals with various bioactive polyphenols, such as gallic acid (GA), ferulic acid (FA), and catechins. A detailed introduction of the methods and their mechanisms for free radical-mediated grafting is given. Structural characterization methods of the graft products, including thin-layer chromatography (TLC), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are introduced. Furthermore, the biological properties of polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates are also presented, including antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and neuroprotection activities, etc. Moreover, the potential applications of polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates are described. Finally, the challenges and research prospects of graft products are summarized.

Preparation and characterization of antibacterial, antioxidant, and biocompatible p-coumaric acid modified quaternized chitosan nanoparticles

To fabricate multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) based on chitosan (CS) derivative, we first prepared quaternized CS (2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride CS, HTCC) via a one-step approach, then synthesized p-coumaric acid (p-CA) modified HTCC (HTCC-CA) for the first time through amide reaction, and finally fabricated a series of NPs (HTCC-CA NPs) using HTCC-CAs with different substitution degrees and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) by ionic gelation. Newly-prepared HTCC and HTCC-CAs were characterized by FT-IR, ¹H NMR, elemental analysis (EA), full-wavelength UV scanning, silver nitrate titration, and Folin-Ciocalteu methods. DLS and TEM results demonstrated that three selected HTCC-CA NPs had moderate size (< 350 nm), good dispersion (PDI < 0.4), and positive zeta potential (11-20 mV). The HTCC-CA NPs had high antibacterial activity against six bacterial strains, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were almost the same as the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values (250-1000 μg/mL). Also, the HTCC-CA NPs had good antioxidation (radical scavenging ratio > 65 %) and low cytotoxicity (relative cell viability >80 %) to the tested cells. Totally, HTCC-CA NPs with high antibacterial activity, great antioxidation, and low cytotoxicity might serve as new biomedical materials for promoting skin wound healing.

Recent Application Prospects of Chitosan Based Composites for the Metal Contaminants Wastewater Treatment

Heavy metals, known for their toxic nature and ability to accumulate and magnify in the food chain, are a major environmental concern. The use of environmentally friendly adsorbents, such as chitosan (CS)—a biodegradable cationic polysaccharide, has gained attention for removing heavy metals from water. This review discusses the physicochemical properties of CS and its composites and nanocomposites and their potential application in wastewater treatment.

Incorporating Portulaca oleracea extract endows the chitosan-starch film with antioxidant capacity for chilled meat preservation

This study aimed to investigate the application potential of Portulaca oleracea extract (POE) in active packaging for the preservation of chilled meat. First, the antioxidant capacity and active ingredients of POE were systematically studied. The results demonstrated that POE has excellent antioxidant capacity and contains abundant antioxidant compounds. Subsequently, antioxidant-active packaging films based on chitosan and starch containing different concentrations of POE (CS/POE films) were successfully developed. The main physicochemical and mechanical properties of the CS/POE films were characterized and evaluated. The CS/POE films exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity and can significantly reduce lipid oxidation in meat. Compared with polyethylene film, the CS/POE films-treated meats had better preservation effects and longer shelf-life. These findings suggested that CS/POE film has the potential to become a good alternative to conventional plastics in food packaging. In conclusion, Portulaca oleracea extract is an excellent natural antioxidant with great potential in active packaging for chilled meat preservation.

Engineering chitosan into fully bio-sourced, water-soluble and enhanced antibacterial poly(aprotic/protic ionic liquid)s packaging membrane

The design and facile preparation of water-soluble and eco-friendly polymer packaging membrane materials is a fascinating research topic, particularly in terms of the increasing concerns on potential microplastics pollution in ecosystem. In this study, taking advantages of the structural features of chitosan (CS) and betaine hydrochloride (BHC), fully bio-sourced and water-soluble poly(aprotic/protic ionic liquid)s (PAPILs) were successfully designed and prepared through the reaction of the amino groups in CS and carboxyl groups in BHC. The structure and thermo-properties of the PAPILs were elucidated by a series of characteristic methods. The rheological properties of the PAPILs aqueous solutions were also investigated. Moreover, water-soluble PAPILs membrane with a smooth surface morphology and a tensile strength of 62.9 MPa was successfully prepared. The PAPILs membrane also exhibited satisfactory biocompatibility, excellent antibacterial activities and high oxygen barrier property. Together with these outstanding material performance and functionality, as a "proof of concept", the potential use of the PAPILs membrane as water-soluble packaging material for laundry detergent capsule and pesticide was preliminarily demonstrated. These findings provide significant insights for the design of sustainable and functional packaging materials by using natural resources.

Improving the physicochemical stability of Pickering emulsion stabilized by glycosylated whey protein isolate/cyanidin-3-glucoside to deliver curcumin

Protein-polysaccharide-polyphenol delivery systems function as a promising tool to deliver bioactive ingredients aiming to improve their solubility and bioavailability. In this study, whey protein isolate (WPI), short-chain inulin (SCI), and cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) were first used to stabilize Pickering emulsions. The physicochemical properties and stability of curcumin encapsulated or not in Pickering emulsions were explored. Results showed that glycosylation and C3G reduced surface and interfacial tension on protein surfaces and inhibited the aggregation of emulsion droplets, thereby reducing the emulsion's particle size. WPI-SCI/C3G stabilized Pickering emulsion had the best stability. The CLSM results showed that the WPI-SCI and WPI-SCI/C3G stabilized emulsions were uniformly dispersed, suggesting that glycosylation and the interaction between protein and C3G enhanced the adsorption capacity of the interfacial protein and improved the stability of the Pickering emulsion. The retention rates of curcumin-loaded WPI-SCI- (67.34 %) and WPI-SCI/C3G- (77.07 %) stabilized Pickering emulsions on day 8 of storage were higher than those in WPI- (33.97 %) and WPI/C3G- (37.02 %) stabilized emulsions, and the degradation half-life was also extended from 7 days to >15 days. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the application of WPI Pickering emulsion and indicate a useful means for the delivery of bioactive components.

Chitin and Chitosan as Polymers of the Future-Obtaining, Modification, Life Cycle Assessment and Main Directions of Application

Natural polymers are very widespread in the world, which is why it is so important to know about the possibilities of their use. Chitin is the second most abundant reproducible natural polymer in nature; however, it is insoluble in water and basic solvents. Chitin is an unused waste of the food industry, for which there are possibilities of secondary management. The research led to obtaining a soluble, environmentally friendly form of chitin, which has found potential applications in the many fields, e.g., medicine, cosmetics, food and textile industries, agriculture, etc. The deacetylated form of chitin, which is chitosan, has a number of beneficial properties and wide possibilities of modification. Modification possibilities mean that we can obtain chitosan with the desired functional properties, facilitating, for example, the processing of this polymer and expanding the possibilities of its application, also as biomimetic materials. The review contains a rich description of the possibilities of modifying chitin and chitosan and the main directions of their application, and life cycle assessment (LCA)-from the source of the polymer through production materials to various applications with the reduction of waste.

Chitosan/graphene oxide hybrid hydrogel electrode with porous network boosting ultrahigh energy density flexible supercapacitor

To overcome the low energy density and poor conductivity of conventional electrode materials for building supercapacitor, herein, a hybrid hydrogel prepared from compositing bio-based chitosan with holey graphene oxide by microwave-assisted hydrothermal is proposed. This binary hydrogel is endowed with heteroatomic functional groups and conductive porous network by chemical pretreatments, where amides and carboxyl groups are introduced during the acylation modification of chitosan to enable it soluble in water for sufficient reaction, while the oxidation etching for graphene oxide in the defect area by H₂O₂ facilitates in-plane nanopores network to provide abundant active surface and short ion diffusion pathway. Benefited from the high conductivity and flexibility, this hydrogel present promising performance when used as additive-free electrode in a three-electrode, with a high specific capacitance of 377 F/g at 5 A/g. The rich nitrogen and oxygen groups on surface of the hydrogel contribute to high capacitance directly, while the in-plane nanopores and hierarchically porous network benefit to promote their wettability, accelerate the charge transfer and enhance their charge storage ability. When the hydrogel composite is adopted into a flexible solid-state supercapacitor employing lignin hydrogel electrolyte, it unfolds a specific capacitance of 210 F/g at 0.5 A/g, with an ultrahigh energy density of 31 Wh/kg at the power density of 150 W/kg. The solid-state supercapacitor exhibits promising potential in applications such as signal sensor and portable energy storage.

Properties of plant-derived soluble dietary fibers for fiber-enriched foods: A comparative evaluation

Plant-derived soluble dietary fibers (SDF) have many important physiological functions and the applications of SDF vary based on their properties, which are worth further investigating for fiber-enriched food production. In this study, SDF derived from konjac, apple, chicory, flaxseed, orange, psyllium seed, soybean and oat were purified, and their structural, physicochemical and functional properties were systematically evaluated. Monosaccharide composition analysis showed that these SDF belonged to heteropolysaccharides, of which konjac, psyllium seed, apple, soybean and oat SDF were glucomannan, arabinoxylan, pectin, arabinogalactan and glucan, respectively. The molecular weight of konjac glucomannan (KGM, 5.22 × 10⁶ Da) was the highest, and inulin, soybean arabinogalactan (SA) and oat glucan (OG) had higher water solubility. Moreover, KGM, apple pectin (AP), flaxseed SDF (FS) and psyllium seed arabinoxylan (PA) exhibited better water-holding capacity, swelling capacity, emulsifying activity and stability. Rheological studies and texture profile analysis suggested that KGM had the best viscosity and gelation ability. In addition, AP and orange SDF (OS) showed better α-amylase inhibitory activity, while OS and KGM had higher pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity. Also, KGM and FS displayed fine cholesterol absorption capacity. To summary, these functional properties illustrated the feasibility of SDF to regulate blood sugar and blood lipid levels.

Regeneration Approach to Enhance the Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Activities of Chitosan for Biomedical Applications

Owing to its biodegradability, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility, chitosan (Cs) is a ubiquitous biopolymer. However, applications of Cs are limited owing to the existence of strong inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds within its network. To address this issue, we regenerated medium-molecular-weight Cs to enhance the physico-chemical and functional properties using a cationic approach. Accordingly, alkaline modification was employed to introduce an additional positive charge to the amine functional groups of Cs and moderately disintegrate the inter- and intra-hydrogen bonds. The chemical structure of Cs and regenerated chitosan (RCs) was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared and ¹H-NMR spectroscopy. RCs showed higher zeta potential value compared to Cs. Additionally, using X-ray diffraction, RCs exhibited low crystallinity, which can be attributed to the repulsive force caused by the positive surface charge and the destruction of hydrogen bonds. The RCs exhibited stronger antioxidant activity than Cs. Furthermore, the minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) of RCs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were reduced by almost four times compared with those of Cs. The superior functional properties of RCs can be attributed to the formation of a polycationic structure after alkaline modification. Thus, RCs can be introduced as potent agents for various biomedical purposes.

Chitosan-Coated Polymeric Silver and Gold Nanoparticles: Biosynthesis, Characterization and Potential Antibacterial Applications: A Review

Biosynthesized metal nanoparticles, especially silver and gold nanoparticles, and their conjugates with biopolymers have immense potential in various fields of science due to their enormous applications, including biomedical applications. Polymeric nanoparticles are particles of small sizes from 1 nm to 1000 nm. Among different polymeric nanoparticles, chitosan-coated silver and gold nanoparticles have gained significant interest from researchers due to their various biomedical applications, such as anti-cancer, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory technologies, as well as targeted drug delivery, etc. Multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria have become a serious threat to public health day by day. Novel, effective, and safe antibacterial agents are required to control these multidrug-resistant pathogenic microorganisms. Chitosan-coated silver and gold nanoparticles could be effective and safe agents for controlling these pathogens. It is proven that both chitosan and silver or gold nanoparticles have strong antibacterial activity. By the conjugation of biopolymer chitosan with silver or gold nanoparticles, the stability and antibacterial efficacy against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria will be increased significantly, as well as their toxicity in humans being decreased. In recent years, chitosan-coated silver and gold nanoparticles have been increasingly investigated due to their potential applications in nanomedicine. This review discusses the biologically facile, rapid, and ecofriendly synthesis of chitosan-coated silver and gold nanoparticles; their characterization; and potential antibacterial applications against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria.

Bioactivity and Component Analysis of Water Extract of Sophora japonica against Hyperuricemia by Inhibiting Xanthine Oxidase Activity

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a metabolic condition caused by excessive production or low excretion of uric acid (UA) in the body. Xanthine oxidase (XOD) is the key enzyme in the process of metabolism purines to generate UA. In this study, the in vitro inhibitory effect of water extract of the flower bud of Sophora japonica (WESJ) on XOD was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. A mice model of HUA was constructed to explore the effect of WESJ on UA levels and the mechanism of action on renal function. Based on Box-Behnken design, the optimal extraction process of WESJ was determined to extract Sophora japonica twice with 8 times of water, 0.5 h each time. Pharmacological results showed that low, medium, and high doses of WESJ (200, 400, 600 mg/kg) could significantly reduce serum UA level, inhibit the activity of XOD in blood and liver, and have a protective effect on kidney damage caused by high UA. Through UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS analysis, 214 compounds were identified in WESJ, including flavonoids, polyphenols, triterpenoids, organic acids, and others. The rat serum of WESJ was analyzed, and 23 prototype components entering the blood were identified, including 15 flavonoids and polyphenols, which may be the main bioactive components. In conclusion, flavonoids and polyphenols in WESJ may reduce the level of UA and alleviate kidney damage by inhibiting the activity of XOD. WESJ is expected to be used as a plant-based food and dietary supplement for the treatment of HUA.

Phenolic Compounds in Active Packaging and Edible Films/Coatings: Natural Bioactive Molecules and Novel Packaging Ingredients

In recent years, changing lifestyles and food consumption patterns have driven demands for high-quality, ready-to-eat food products that are fresh, clean, minimally processed, and have extended shelf lives. This demand sparked research into the creation of novel tools and ingredients for modern packaging systems. The use of phenolic-compound-based active-packaging and edible films/coatings with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities is an innovative approach that has gained widespread attention worldwide. As phenolic compounds are natural bioactive molecules that are present in a wide range of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, oils, spices, tea, chocolate, and wine, as well as agricultural waste and industrial byproducts, their utilization in the development of packaging materials can lead to improvements in the oxidative status and antimicrobial properties of food products. This paper reviews recent trends in the use of phenolic compounds as potential ingredients in food packaging, particularly for the development of phenolic compounds-based active packaging and edible films. Moreover, the applications and modes-of-action of phenolic compounds as well as their advantages, limitations, and challenges are discussed to highlight their novelty and efficacy in enhancing the quality and shelf life of food products.

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Porous Chitosan/Gelatin/Polycaprolactone Bone Scaffold Prepared by Microwave Foaming Method

Bone tissue may suffer from bone injury and bone defects due to accidents or diseases. Since the demand for autologous bone and allograft tissue far exceeds the supply, bone scaffolds have taken the lead. The use of bone scaffolds is one of the measures to help heal or regenerate bone tissue. Therefore, a new bone scaffold was proposed in this study, which has a simpler preparation process and stronger performance. This study proposes bone scaffolds with an attempt to use polymers that are synthesized separately with three types of minerals as the filler using the microwave foaming method as follows. A 0.1 wt% of montmorillonite (MMT), zinc oxide (ZnO), or titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is added to chitosan (CS)/gelatin mixtures, respectively, after which sodium bicarbonate is added as a foaming agent, thereby forming porous gels. The polymer synthesized from three minerals was used as filler. The following microwave foaming method was adopted: 0.1 wt% MMT, ZnO, or TiO₂ was added to the CS/gelatin mixture, and then sodium bicarbonate was added as a foaming agent to form a porous gel. Next, porous gels and polycaprolactone were combined in a self-made mold in order to form bone scaffolds. A stereo microscope is used to observe the morphology of bone scaffolds, after which the pore size analysis, pore connectivity, swell property, porosity, and compressive strength are tested, examining the effects of the mineral type on bone scaffolds. The test results indicate that with MMT being the filler and sodium bicarbonate being the foaming agent, the resulting bone scaffolds yield a porous structure with a pore size between 120 μm and 370 μm. Besides, the incorporation of polycaprolactone also provides samples of 1MCG-P, 2MCG-P, and 5MCG-P with a certain compressive strength of 150–170 MPa. To sum up, the test results substantiate that a combination of the microwave foaming method and MMT generates a porous structure for bone scaffolds (1MCG-P, 2MCG-P, and 5MCG-P), involving a porosity of 38%, an inter-connected porous structure, and the compressive strength that exceeds 150 MPa.

Preparation of l-Arginine Schiff Bases Modified Chitosan Derivatives and Their Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Properties

We successfully prepared a series of l-arginine Schiff bases acylated chitosan derivatives, aiming to improve the antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity of chitosan by introducing a furan ring, pyridine ring, and l-arginine structure. The accuracy of the structures of ten compounds was characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR. In terms of DPPH radical scavenging activity, except for compound CR3PCA, the scavenging rate of other compounds was higher than chitosan, especially CRCF and CRBF had strong scavenging abilities. At the same time, in the superoxide-radical scavenging activity assay, CRCF, CRBF, CR3PCA, CR2C3PCA, and CR2B3PCA were comparable to positive control at 1.60 mg/mL. Simultaneously, CRFF, CRCF, and CRBF had a certain inhibitory effect on Botrytis cinerea. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of CRFF, CRCF, and CR3PCA on Staphylococcus aureus was very well, close to the positive control at 1.00 mg/mL. CRCF and CR2B3PCA showed better inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli than other compounds. The MTT assay was used to determine the cytotoxicity of the chitosan derivatives, which proved their safety to fibroblast cells. In summary, the study indicated that some of these compounds have the potential for further development and utilization in the preparation of antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.

Chitosan–Hydroxycinnamic Acids Conjugates: Emerging Biomaterials with Rising Applications in Biomedicine

Over the past thirty years, research has shown the huge potential of chitosan in biomedical applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering and regeneration, cancer therapy, and antimicrobial treatments, among others. One of the major advantages of this interesting polysaccharide is its modifiability, which facilitates its use in tailor-made applications. In this way, the molecular structure of chitosan has been conjugated with multiple molecules to modify its mechanical, biological, or chemical properties. Here, we review the conjugation of chitosan with some bioactive molecules: hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs); since these derivatives have been probed to enhance some of the biological effects of chitosan and to fine-tune its characteristics for its application in the biomedical field. First, the main characteristics of chitosan and HCAs are presented; then, the currently employed conjugation strategies between chitosan and HCAs are described; and, finally, the studied biomedical applications of these derivatives are discussed to present their limitations and advantages, which could lead to proximal therapeutic uses.

In-vitro and in-vivo evaluation of biocompatible polymeric microgels for pH- driven delivery of Ketorolac tromethamine

The aim of the current study was to prepare glutamic acid crosslinked poly(itaconic acid/methacrylic acid) microgels for pH-responsive delivery of ketorolac tromethamine, using aqueous free radical polymerization technique. The polymerization of polymer with monomers was carried out by a crosslinking agent N', N'-methylene bisacrylamide in the presence of initiator ammonium persulfate. The prepared microgels were characterized for structure, surface morphology, thermal stability, and crystallinity. Similarly, studies such as sol-gel analysis, drug loading, and polymer volume fraction were performed for the fabricated microgels. The pH-sensitivity of the developed microgels was investigated at three different pH values i.e., pH 1.2, 4.6, and 7.4 by swelling and in-vitro drug release studies. Maximum swelling and drug release were found at pH 7.4 as compared to pH 1.2 and 4.6, which indicated the pH-sensitive nature of the prepared microgels. The toxicity of the prepared microgels was evaluated by cell line and HET-CAM test, which demonstrated no toxic effect of the prepared microgels. In-vivo study was carried out on rabbits and high plasma concentration was reported for the drug loaded microgels as compared to drug solution and commercial product Keten. Hence, the prepared microgel system could be employed as an excellent carrier for the controlled drug delivery system.

Polyelectrolyte Chondroitin Sulfate Microgels as a Carrier Material for Rosmarinic Acid and Their Antioxidant Ability

Polyelectrolyte microgels derived from natural sources such as chondroitin sulfate (CS) possess considerable interest as therapeutic carriers because of their ionic nature and controllable degradation capability in line with the extent of the used crosslinker for long-term drug delivery applications. In this study, chemically crosslinked CS microgels were synthesized in a single step and treated with an ammonia solution to attain polyelectrolyte CS^-[NH₄]⁺ microgels via a cation exchange reaction. The spherical and non-porous CS microgels were injectable and in the size range of a few hundred nanometers to tens of micrometers. The average size distribution of the CS microgels and their polyelectrolyte forms were not significantly affected by medium pH. It was determined that the -34 ± 4 mV zeta potential of the CS microgels was changed to -23 ± 3 mV for CS^- [NH₄]⁺ microgels with pH 7 medium. No important toxicity was determined on L929 fibroblast cells, with 76 ± 1% viability in the presence of 1000 μg/mL concentration of CS^-[NH₄]⁺ microgels. Furthermore, these microgels were used as a drug carrier material for rosmarinic acid (RA) active agent. The RA-loading capacity was about 2.5-fold increased for CS^-[R]⁺ microgels with 32.4 ± 5.1 μg/mg RA loading, and 23% of the loaded RA was sustainably release for a long-term period within 150 h in comparison to CS microgels. Moreover, RA-loaded CS^-[R]⁺ microgels exhibited great antioxidant activity, with 0.45 ± 0.02 μmol/g Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity in comparison to no antioxidant properties for bare CS particles.

Loading and Release of Phenolic Compounds Present in Mexican Oregano (Lippia graveolens) in Different Chitosan Bio-Polymeric Cationic Matrixes

Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) polyphenols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential, but low bioaccessibility. Therefore, in the present work the micro/nano-encapsulation of these compounds in two different matrixes of chitosan (CS) and chitosan-b-poly(PEGMA2000) (CS-b-PPEGMA) is described and assessed. The particle sizes of matrixes of CS (~955 nm) and CS-b-PPEGMA (~190 nm) increased by 10% and 50%, respectively, when the phenolic compounds were encapsulated, yielding loading efficiencies (LE) between 90–99% and 50–60%, correspondingly. The release profiles in simulated fluids revealed a better control of host–guest interactions by using the CS-b-PPEGMA matrix, reaching phenolic compounds release of 80% after 24 h, while single CS retained the guest compounds. The total reducing capacity (TRC) and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) of the phenolic compounds (PPHs) are protected and increased (more than five times) when they are encapsulated. Thus, this investigation provides a standard encapsulation strategy and relevant results regarding nutraceuticals stabilization and their improved bioaccessibility.

Water-soluble amino functionalized chitosan: Preparation, characterization, antioxidant and antibacterial activities

Amino functionalized chitosan has attracted much attention because of the fascinated bioactivities. In our study, a novel water-soluble amino functionalized chitosan bearing free amino group at C-2 and quaternary ammonium moiety contained free amino group at C-6 (5c) was prepared by a four-step method. The structural characterization was identified by FTIR and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The water-solubility and antioxidant activities against hydroxyl, DPPH radicals and reducing power were estimated. The results displayed that amino functionalized chitosan 5c exhibited improved water-solubility and antioxidant ability, especially its DPPH scavenging rate reached about 90 % at the minimum test concentration of 0.10 mg/mL. Besides, antibacterial tests showed that amino functional chitosan 5c had best antibacterial activities, which indicated that amino group made main contribution to the enhanced bioactivities. In short, the novel chitosan 5c possessed enhanced water-solubility and excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activities, which could provide novel strategy for the development of antioxidant and antibacterial agents in biomedicine and food fields.

Preparation and Properties of Blended Composite Film Manufactured Using Walnut-Peptide-Chitosan-Sodium Alginate

In this study, layer-by-layer assembly was performed to prepare sodium alginate (SA) layer and walnut-peptide-chitosan (CS) bilayer composite films. Genipin was adopted to crosslink CS and walnut peptide. The properties of walnut peptide-CS-SA composite film were determined, and the influence of material ratio on the performance of composite film was explored. According to the results, the mechanical tensile property, oil absorption property, and water vapor barrier property of the composite film were improved with the presence of genipin. Moreover, the proportion of CS and walnut peptide had significant effects on color, transmittance, mechanical properties, barrier properties, and antioxidant properties of the composite films. Among them, the composite film containing 1% (w/v) CS, 1% (w/v) walnut peptide, and 0.01% (w/v) genipin showed the best performance, with a tensile strength of 3.65 MPa, elongation at break of 30.82%, water vapor permeability of 0.60 g·mm·m-2·h-1·kPa-1, oil absorption of 0.85%, and the three-phase electrochemistry of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging rate of 25.59%. Under this condition, the tensile property, barrier property, and oxidation resistance of the composite film are good, which can provide a good preservation effect for food, and has great application potential.

Preparation and Characterization of Yellow Peach Peel/Sodium Alginate/Glycerol Antioxidant Film Applicable for Oil Package

This work was dedicated to improving the utilization rate of yellow peach peel (YPP), with the addition of sodium alginate (SA) and glycerol (G) to prepare a biodegradable antioxidant film. First, the formulation of the film was optimized via response surface methodology (RSM) combined with the multi-index comprehensive evaluation method, considering physical properties including tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E%), water solution (WS) and light transmittance (T). The RSM results displayed the best process condition was 2.50% of YPP, 0.60% SA and 0.80% of G (based on water) and compared with pure YPP film and YPP-SA film, the optimized (YPP-SA-G) film presented excellent properties with TS of 21.52 MPa, E of 24.8%, T of 21.56% on 600 nm, and WS of 41.61%, the comprehensive evaluation score of the film was 0.700. Furthermore, the films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FTIR analysis showed the main interaction of hydrogen between YPP, SA and G make the film has excellent compatibility, and the SEM images displayed that the film was dense and compacted with a little roughness. In addition, the optimized film had excellent thermal stability, suggested by TGA and XRD showed that the film’s crystal structure has been changed significantly when the SA and G were mixed in. The TPC and the ability of DPPH radical scavenging of the YPP-SA-G film was 17.68 mg·g−1 of GAE and 18.65%, then potential packaging applications were evaluated using soybean oil and the YPP-SA-G antioxidant film significantly decreased peroxide value (POV) to delay oil oxidation during storage. Therefore, the YPP-SA-G film is expected to provide a new theoretical basis for the use of food processing by-products and the packaging industry.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties of Modified Chitosan Nonwovens

Chitosan acquires bacteriostatic properties via protonation of its amino groups. However, much of the literature assumes that chitosan itself inhibits the growth of bacteria. This article presents a comparative study of chitosan nonwovens modified with various acids, including acetic, propionic, butyric, and valeric organic acids, as well as hydrochloric acid. The aim was to determine which acid salts influence the antibacterial and antifungal activity of chitosan-based materials. Two methods were used to modify (formation of ammonium salts) the chitosan nonwovens: First, acid vapors (gassing process) were used to find which salt of chitosan had the best antibacterial properties. Based on the results, the most effective acid was prepared in a solution in ethanol. The influence of the acid concentration in ethanol, the time of treatment of chitosan materials with acid solution, and the rinsing process of modified nonwovens on the antimicrobial activity of the modified materials was investigated. The modified materials were subjected to microbiological tests. Each of the modified materials was placed in bacterial inoculum. The cultures were tested on agar to observe their microbial activity. Toxicity to human red blood cells was also investigated. A reduction in the number of bacterial cells was observed for the S. aureus strain with chitosan salt modified with 10% acetic acid in ethanol. The antibacterial activity of the chitosan salts increased with the percentage of acid salts formed on the surface of the solid material (decreasing numbers of bacterial colonies or no growth). No reduction in growth was observed for the E. coli strain. The chitosan samples were either inactive or completely eliminated the bacterial cells. Antimicrobial activity was observed for chitosan salts with hydrochloric acid and acetic acid. Finally, ¹H-NMR spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy were used to confirm the incorporation of the acid groups to the amino groups of chitosan.

Evaluation of Antimicrobial and Anti-Biofilm Formation Activities of Novel Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels Reinforced with Crosslinked Chitosan and Silver Nano-Particles

Novel hydrogels were prepared by blending chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, then crosslinking the resulting blends using trimellitic anhydride isothiocyanate at a concentration based on chitosan content in the blends. The weight ratios of chitosan: PVA in the blends were 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1 to produce three hydrogels symbolized as H13, H11, and H31, respectively. For a comparison, H10 was also prepared by crosslinking pure chitosan with trimellitic anhydride isothiocyanate. For further modification, three H31/silver nanocomposites (AgNPs) were synthesized using three different concentrations of silver nitrate to obtain H31/AgNPs1%, H31/AgNPs3% and H31/AgNPs5%. The structures of the prepared samples were emphasized using various analytical techniques. PVA has no inhibition activity against the tested microbes and biofilms. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm formation activities of the investigated samples was arranged as: H31/AgNPs5% ≥ H31/AgNPs3% > H31/AgNPs1% > H10 > H31 > H11 > H13 > chitosan. H31/AgNPs5% and H31/AgNPs3% were more potent than Vancomycin and Amphotericin B against most of the tested microbes. Interestingly, H31 and H31/AgNPs3% were safe on the normal human cells. Consequently, hydrogels resulting from crosslinked blends of chitosan and PVA loaded with AgNPs in the same structure have significantly reinforced the antimicrobial and inhibition activity against the biofilms of PVA.

Facile Preparation of Chitosan-Based Composite Film with Good Mechanical Strength and Flame Retardancy

To improve on the poor strength and flame retardancy of a chitosan (CS)-based functional film, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was taken as the reinforced material and both ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) as the flame-retardant additives in the CS matrix to prepare the CS/CNF/APP/BPEI composite film by simple drying. The resulting composite film showed good mechanical strength, with a tensile strength reaching 71.84 Mpa due to the high flexibility of CNF and the combination of CS, CNF and BPEI through strong hydrogen bonding interactions. The flame retardant-performance of the composite film greatly enhanced the limit oxygen index (LOI), up to 32.7% from 27.6% for the pure film, and the PHRR intensity decreased to 28.87 W/g from 39.38% in the micro-scale combustion calorimetry (MCC) test due to the ability of BPEI to stimulate the decomposition of APP, releasing non-flammable gases such as CO₂, N₂, NH₃, etc., and forming a protective phosphating layer to block the entry of O₂. Based on the good flame retardancy, mechanical strength and transparency, the CS/CNF/APP/BPEI composite film has a great potential for future applications.

Harnessing the Antibacterial Properties of Fluoridated Chitosan Polymers against Oral Biofilms

Dental caries are a worldwide endemic chronic disease affecting people of all ages. Due to the limitations of daily used oral hygiene products, there is an unmet need for new, effective, safe, and economic oral products. We have recently demonstrated that N-(2(2,6-diaminohexanamide)-chitosan (CS3H Lys) has enhanced antibacterial properties against Streptococcus mutans, the main cariogenic bacterium, and here we investigated the effect of fluoridation of this polymer (CS3H Lys F) on its antibacterial properties and the ability to protect teeth from acid demineralization. We further formulated this polymer into mouthwash preparations and studied their cytocompatibility and physicochemical stability over 6 months. CS3H Lys F was 1.6-fold more effective than the highest tested oral NaF dose in preventing acid demineralization. CS3H Lys F has a 3- to 5-fold lower minimum inhibitory concentration value against S. mutants than the values reported for chitosan polymers and showed negligible cell toxicity. The mouthwashes were stable at both 25 and 40 °C. Further work is under way towards other CS3H Lys F oral hygiene products such as a toothpaste.

Angiogenesis, Osseointegration, and Antibacterial Applications of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Coatings Incorporated With Silver/Strontium Containing Mesoporous Bioactive Glass on 316L Stainless Steel

The main causes for failure in implant surgery are prolonged exposure of implants or wound and tissue ischemia. Bacterial infection caused by the surrounding medical environment and equipment is also a major risk factor. The medical risk would be greatly reduced if we could develop an implant coating to guide tissue growth and promote antibacterial activity. Mesoporous bioactive glasses are mainly silicates with good osteoinductivity and have been used in medical dentistry and orthopedics for several decades. Strontium ions and silver ions could plausibly be incorporated into bioactive glass to achieve the required function. Strontium ions are trace elements in human bone that have been proposed to promote osseointegration and angiogenesis. Silver ions can cause bacterial apoptosis through surface charge imbalance after bonding to the cell membrane. In this study, functional polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings were adhered to 316L stainless steel (SS) by spin coating. The multilayer film was composed of biocompatible and biodegradable collagen as a positively charged layer, γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) as a negatively charged layer. Chitosan was incorporated to the 11th positively charged layer as a stabilizing barrier. Spray pyrolysis prepared mesoporous bioactive glass incorporated with silver and strontium (AgSrMBG) was added to each negatively charged layer. The PEM/AgSrMBG coating was well hydrophilic with a contact angle of 37.09°, hardness of 0.29 ± 0.09 GPa, Young’s modulus of 5.35 ± 1.55 GPa, and roughness of 374.78 ± 22.27 nm, as observed through nano-indention and white light interferometry. The coating’s antibacterial activity was sustained for 1 month through the inhibition zone test, and was biocompatible with rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), as observed in the MTT assay. There was more hydroxyapatite precipitation on the PEM/AgSrMBG surface after being soaked in simulated body fluid (SBF), as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In both in vitro and in vivo tests, the PEM/AgSrMBG coating promoted angiogenesis, osseointegration, and antibacterial activity due to the sustained release of silver and strontium ions.

In Situ Growth of Silver Nanoparticles on Chitosan Matrix for the Synthesis of Hybrid Electrospun Fibers: Analysis of Microstructural and Mechanical Properties

A viable alternative for the next generation of wound dressings is the preparation of electrospun fibers from biodegradable polymers in combination with inorganic nanoparticles. A poly(vinyl alcohol)-chitosan-silver nanoparticles (PVA-CTS-Ag NPs) system has been developed for antimicrobial and wound healing applications. Here, the preparation of PVA-CTS-Ag electrospun fibers using a two-step process is reported in order to analyze changes in the microstructural, mechanical, and antibacterial properties and confirm their potential application in the biomedical field. The Ag nanoparticles were well-dispersed into the chitosan matrix and their cubic structure after the electrospinning process was also retained. The Ag NPs displayed an average diameter of ~33 nm into the CTS matrix, while the size increased up to 213 nm in the PVA-CTS-Ag(NPs) fibers. It was observed that strong chemical interactions exist between organic (CTS) and inorganic phases through nitrogenous groups and the oxygen of the glycosidic bonds. A defect-free morphology was obtained in the PVA-CTS-Ag NPs final fibers with an important enhancement of the mechanical properties as well as of the antibacterial activity compared with pure PVA-CTS electrospun fibers. The results of antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus confirmed that PVA-CTS-Ag(NPs) fibers can be potentially used as a material for biomedical applications.

Ag@MOF-loaded p-coumaric acid modified chitosan/chitosan nanoparticle and polyvinyl alcohol/starch bilayer films for food packing applications

Developing novel bilayer food packing film having the ability to prevent bacterial infections and capable of inhibiting oxidation is utmost important, since bacterial infections and oxidation can cause food spoilage. Ag-Metal-organic framework loaded p-coumaric acid modified chitosan (P-CS/Ag@MOF) or chitosan nanoparticles (P-CSNPs/Ag@MOF) and polyvinyl alcohol/starch (PVA/ST) were used as the upper film and lower layer film to successfully prepare a bilayer composite film. The microscopic morphology, water resistance, oil resistance, oxidation resistance, optical properties, cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties of the composite films were compared. The results showed that the surface of P-CS/Ag@MOF bilayer was relatively smooth and its tensile strength (TS) was higher (27.67 MPa). Among them, P-CS/Ag@MOF bilayer films had better oil resistance and oxidation resistance activity. In addition, the P-CS/Ag@MOF bilayer film had good UV-blocking properties and transparency. P-CSNPs/Ag@MOF bilayer film had higher antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity.

Synthesis, characterization, and anti-tumor properties of O-benzoylselenoglycolic chitosan

This study introduces a facile method for synthesizing O-benzoylselenoglycolic chitosan with a high selenium concentration of 45.32 mg/g. The characterizations of the chemical structure via FTIR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, TGA, and XRD analyses indicated that benzoylselenoglycolic acid was successfully grafted onto the C6 hydroxyl group of chitosan. The anti-cancer activity of the O-benzoylselenoglycolic chitosan was investigated in vitro using a HepG2 cell model, and the results indicated that it has excellent anticancer activity against HepG2 cancer cells with an IC₅₀ value of 0.53 μg/mL while exhibiting non-toxicity against normal cells (L-02). Furthermore, a mechanistic study revealed that the O-benzoylselenoglycolic chitosan could induce early apoptosis, G2/M, S phase arrest, and activation of caspase-3 activity to inhibit the HepG2 cell growth. This study has led to novel organic selenium species, and the results suggest its potential to be used as an effective ingredient for cancer prevention and therapy in the food and pharmaceutical fields.

Maturation Process, Nutritional Profile, Bioactivities and Utilisation in Food Products of Red Pitaya Fruits: A Review

Red pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus, red pulp with pink peel), also known as dragon fruit, is a well-known species of pitaya fruit. Pitaya seeds and peels have been reported to exhibit higher concentrations of total polyphenols, beta-cyanins and amino acid than pulp, while anthocyanins (i.e., cyanidin 3-glucoside, delphinidin 3-glucoside and pelargonidin 3-glucoside) were only detected in the pulp extracts. Beta-cyanins, phenolics and flavonoids were found to increase gradually during fruit maturation and pigmentation appeared earlier in the pulp than peel. The phytochemicals were extracted and purified by various techniques and broadly used as natural, low-cost, and beneficial healthy compounds in foods, including bakery, wine, dairy, meat and confectionery products. These bioactive components also exhibit regulative influences on the human gut microbiota, glycaemic response, lipid accumulation, inflammation, growth of microbials and mutagenicity, but the mechanisms are yet to be understood. The objective of this study was to systematically summarise the effect of red pitaya’s maturation process on the nutritional profile and techno-functionality in a variety of food products. The findings of this review provide valuable suggestions for the red pitaya fruit processing industry, leading to novel formulations supported by molecular research.
