Physicochemical, antioxidant properties of giant croaker (Nibea japonica) swim bladders collagen and wound healing evaluation

Valorization of Yellowfin Tuna Tails: From Proteolytic Enzyme Production to Gelatin and Antioxidant Hydrolysate Extraction

This study investigates the valorization potential of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) tails to produce high-value commercial products. Firstly, the tuna tails were placed in a perforated stainless-steel cylinder, and hydraulic pressure was applied to separate the skin from the muscle in the tails. The extracted muscle was then utilized as a nitrogen source for the growth of the proteolytic enzyme producer Bacillus subtilis, while the skins were employed for gelatin extraction. The proteases from B. subtilis were partially purified and used to produce antioxidant peptides from the obtained gelatin. The gelatin formed a gel upon cooling, with gelling and melting temperatures of 16 °C and 22 °C, respectively, and a Bloom strength of approximately 160. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed to determine the optimal hydrolysis conditions to achieve the highest antioxidant activity (35.96% measured as DPPH radical scavenging activity), which were 50 °C and 6.5 IU of enzyme. The findings emphasize the importance of an integrated approach to maximize the value of tuna by-products, promoting sustainability within the framework of a circular bioeconomy. Overall, these results contribute to the efficient utilization of tuna by-products, waste reduction, and enhanced economic viability of the tuna industry.

Enhancing Guided Bone Regeneration with a Novel Carp Collagen Scaffold: Principles and Applications

Bone defects resulting from trauma, surgery, and congenital, infectious, or oncological diseases are a functional and aesthetic burden for patients. Bone regeneration is a demanding procedure, involving a spectrum of molecular processes and requiring the use of various scaffolds and substances, often yielding an unsatisfactory result. Recently, the new collagen sponge and its structural derivatives manufactured from European carp (Cyprinus carpio) were introduced and patented. Due to its fish origin, the novel scaffold poses no risk of allergic reactions or transfer of zoonoses and additionally shows superior biocompatibility, mechanical stability, adjustable degradation rate, and porosity. In this review, we focus on the basic principles of bone regeneration and describe the characteristics of an "ideal" bone scaffold focusing on guided bone regeneration. Moreover, we suggest several possible applications of this novel material in bone regeneration processes, thus opening new horizons for further research.

Swim bladder-derived biomaterials: structures, compositions, properties, modifications, and biomedical applications

Animal-derived biomaterials have been extensively employed in clinical practice owing to their compositional and structural similarities with those of human tissues and organs, exhibiting good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, and extensive sources. However, there is an associated risk of infection with pathogenic microorganisms after the implantation of tissues from pigs, cattle, and other mammals in humans. Therefore, researchers have begun to explore the development of non-mammalian regenerative biomaterials. Among these is the swim bladder, a fish-derived biomaterial that is rapidly used in various fields of biomedicine because of its high collagen, elastin, and polysaccharide content. However, relevant reviews on the biomedical applications of swim bladders as effective biomaterials are lacking. Therefore, based on our previous research and in-depth understanding of this field, this review describes the structures and compositions, properties, and modifications of the swim bladder, with their direct (including soft tissue repair, dural repair, cardiovascular repair, and edible and pharmaceutical fish maw) and indirect applications (including extracted collagen peptides with smaller molecular weights, and collagen or gelatin with higher molecular weights used for hydrogels, and biological adhesives or glues) in the field of biomedicine in recent years. This review provides insights into the use of swim bladders as source of biomaterial; hence, it can aid biomedicine scholars by providing directions for advancements in this field.

Novel Ca-Chelating Peptides from Protein Hydrolysate of Antarctic Krill (Euphausia superba): Preparation, Characterization, and Calcium Absorption Efficiency in Caco-2 Cell Monolayer Model

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is the world's largest resource of animal proteins and is thought to be a high-quality resource for future marine healthy foods and functional products. Therefore, Antarctic krill was degreased and separately hydrolyzed using flavourzyme, pepsin, papain, and alcalase. Protein hydrolysate (AKH) of Antarctic krill prepared by trypsin showed the highest Ca-chelating rate under the optimized chelating conditions: a pH of 8.0, reaction time of 50 min, temperature of 50 °C, and material/calcium ratio of 1:15. Subsequently, fourteen Ca-chelating peptides were isolated from APK by ultrafiltration and a series of chromatographic methods and identified as AK, EAR, AEA, VERG, VAS, GPK, SP, GPKG, APRGH, GVPG, LEPGP, LEKGA, FPPGR, and GEPG with molecular weights of 217.27, 374.40, 289.29, 459.50, 275.30, 300.36, 202.21, 357.41, 536.59, 328.37, 511.58, 516.60, 572.66, and 358.35 Da, respectively. Among fourteen Ca-chelating peptides, VERG presented the highest Ca-chelating ability. Ultraviolet spectrum (UV), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis indicated that the VERG-Ca chelate had a dense granular structure because the N-H, C=O and -COOH groups of VERG combined with Ca2+. Moreover, the VERG-Ca chelate is stable in gastrointestinal digestion and can significantly improve Ca transport in Caco-2 cell monolayer experiments, but phytate could significantly reduce the absorption of Ca derived from the VERG-Ca chelate. Therefore, Ca-chelating peptides from protein hydrolysate of Antarctic krill possess the potential to serve as a Ca supplement in developing healthy foods.

Preparation of Enzyme-Soluble Swim Bladder Collagen from Sea Eel (Muraenesox cinereus) and Evaluation Its Wound Healing Capacity

In the present research, the enzyme-facilitated collagen from sea eel (Muraenesox cinereus) swim bladder was isolated, and the collagen characteristics were analyzed. Then, the collagen sponge was prepared and its potential mechanism in promoting skin wound healing in mice was further investigated. Collagen was obtained from the swim bladder of sea eels employing the pepsin extraction technique. Single-factor experiments served as the basis for the response surface method (RSM) to optimize pepsin concentration, solid-liquid ratio, and hydrolysis period. With a pepsin concentration of 2067 U/g, a solid-liquid ratio of 1:83 g/mL, and a hydrolysis period of 10 h, collagen extraction achieved a yield of 93.76%. The physicochemical analysis revealed that the extracted collagen belonged to type I collagen, and the collagen sponge displayed a fibrous structure under electron microscopy. Furthermore, in comparison to the control group, mice treated with collagen sponge dressing exhibited elevated activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and decreased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin (IL)-1β, interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. The collagen sponge dressing effectively alleviated inflammation in the wound area, facilitating efficient repair and rapid healing of the skin tissue. During the initial phase of wound healing, the group treated with collagen sponge dressing exhibited an enhancement in the expressions of cluster of differentiation (CD)31, epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, and type I collagen, leading to an accelerated rate of wound healing. In addition, this collagen sponge dressing could also downregulate the expressions of CD31, EGF, and type I collagen to prevent scar formation in the later stage. Moreover, this collagen treatment minimized oxidative damage and inflammation during skin wound healing and facilitated blood vessel formation in the wound. Consequently, it exhibits significant potential as an ideal material for the development of a skin wound dressing.

Antioxidant Peptides from the Collagen of Antler Ossified Tissue and Their Protective Effects against H2O2-Induced Oxidative Damage toward HaCaT Cells

Antler ossified tissue has been widely used for the extraction of bioactive peptides. In this study, collagen was prepared from antler ossified tissue via acetic acid and pepsin. Five different proteases were used to hydrolyze the collagen and the hydrolysate treated by neutrase (collagen peptide named ACP) showed the highest DPPH radical clearance rate. The extraction process of ACP was optimized by response surface methodology, and the optimal conditions were as follows: a temperature of 52 °C, a pH of 6.1, and an enzyme concentration of 3200 U/g, which resulted in the maximum DPPH clearance rate of 74.41 ± 0.48%. The peptides (ACP-3) with the strongest antioxidant activity were obtained after isolation and purification, and its DPPH free radical clearance rate was 90.58 ± 1.27%; at the same time, it exhibited good scavenging activity for ABTS, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide anion radical. The study investigated the protective effect of ACP-3 on oxidative damage in HaCaT cells. The findings revealed that all groups that received ACP-3 pretreatment exhibited increased activities of SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT compared to the model group. Furthermore, ACP-3 pretreatment reduced the levels of ROS and MDA in HaCaT cells subjected to H2O2-induced oxidative damage. These results suggest that collagen peptides derived from deer antler ossified tissue can effectively mitigate the oxidative damage caused by H2O2 in HaCaT cells, thereby providing a foundation for the utilization of collagen peptides in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Cardiac-Adaptive Conductive Hydrogel Patch Enabling Construction of Mechanical-Electrical Anisotropic Microenvironment for Heart Repair

The biomimetic construction of a microstructural-mechanical-electrical anisotropic microenvironment adaptive to the native cardiac tissue is essential to repair myocardial infarction (MI). Inspired by the 3D anisotropic characteristic of the natural fish swim bladder (FSB), a novel flexible, anisotropic, and conductive hydrogel was developed for tissue-specific adaptation to the anisotropic structural, conductive, and mechanical features of the native cardiac extracellular matrix. The results revealed that the originally stiff, homogeneous FSB film was tailored to a highly flexible anisotropic hydrogel, enabling its potential as a functional engineered cardiac patch (ECP). In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the enhanced electrophysiological activity, maturation, elongation, and orientation of cardiomyocytes (CMs), and marked MI repair performance with reduced CM apoptosis and myocardial fibrosis, thereby promoting cell retention, myogenesis, and vascularization, as well as improving electrical integration. Our findings offer a potential strategy for functional ECP and provides a novel strategy to bionically simulate the complex cardiac repair environment.

Improving the Sustainability of Processing By-Products: Extraction and Recent Biological Activities of Collagen Peptides

Society and consumers are increasingly concerned about food safety and the sustainability of food production systems. A significant amount of by-products and discards are generated during the processing of aquatic animals, which still needs to be fully utilized by the food industry. The management and sustainable use of these resources are essential to avoiding environmental pollution and resource waste. These by-products are rich in biologically active proteins, which can be converted into peptides by enzymatic hydrolysis or fermentation treatment. Therefore, exploring the extraction of collagen peptides from these by-products using an enzymatic hydrolysis technology has attracted a wide range of attention from numerous researchers. Collagen peptides have been found to possess multiple biological activities, including antioxidant, anticancer, antitumor, hypotensive, hypoglycemic, and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties can enhance the physiological functions of organisms and make collagen peptides useful as ingredients in food, pharmaceuticals, or cosmetics. This paper reviews the general methods for extracting collagen peptides from various processing by-products of aquatic animals, including fish skin, scales, bones, and offal. It also summarizes the functional activities of collagen peptides as well as their applications.

Isolation, Identification, and Biological Activity Analysis of Swim Bladder Polypeptides from Acipenser schrencki

Swim bladder polypeptides (SBPs) of Acipenser schrencki were analyzed for their antioxidant activity and physicochemical properties. The results showed the optimal enzymatic conditions were alkaline protease with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20, an incubation time of 4 h, a temperature of 55 °C, and an enzyme dosage of 5000 U/g. Three different molecular weight fractions (F1, F2, and F3) were obtained via ultrafiltration. F3 (912.44-2135.82 Da) showed 77.90%, 72.15%, and 66.25% removal of O₂•^-, DPPH•, and •OH, respectively, at 10 mg/mL, which was significantly higher than the F1 and F2 fractions (p < 0.05). F3 contained proline (6.17%), hydroxyproline (5.28%), and hydrophobic amino acids (51.39%). The UV spectrum of F3 showed maximum absorption at 224 nm. Peptide sequence analysis showed that F3 contained antioxidant peptides (MFGF, GPPGPRGPPGL, and GPGPSGERGPPGPM) and exhibited inhibitory activities on angiotensin-converting enzyme and dipeptidyl peptidase III/IV (FRF, FPFL and LPGLF). F3 was considered a good raw material for obtaining bioactive peptides.

Swim Bladder of Farmed Totoaba macdonaldi: A Source of Value-Added Collagen

Finding strategies to use the swim bladder of farmed totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) is of the utmost need to reduce waste. Fish swim bladders are rich in collagen; hence, extracting collagen is a promising alternative with benefits for aquaculture of totoaba and the environment. The elemental biochemical composition of totoaba swim bladders, including their proximate and amino acid compositions, was determined. Pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) was used to extract collagen from swim bladders, and its characteristics were analyzed. Alcalase and papain were used for the preparation of collagen hydrolysates. Swim bladders contained 95% protein, 2.4% fat, and 0.8% ash (on a dry basis). The essential amino acid content was low, but the functional amino acid content was high. The PSC yield was high, at 68% (dry weight). The amino acid composition profile, electrophoretic pattern, and structural integrity analyses of the isolated collagen suggested it is a typical type-I collagen with high purity. The denaturalization temperature was 32.5 °C, probably attributable to the imino acid content (205 residues/1000 residues). Papain-hydrolysates (≤3 kDa) of this collagen exhibited higher radical scavenging activity than Alcalase-hydrolysates. The swim bladder from the farmed totoaba could be an ideal source to produce high-quality type I collagen and may be considered an alternative to conventional collagen sources or bioactive peptides.

Collagen Derived from Fish Industry Waste: Progresses and Challenges

Fish collagen garnered significant academic and commercial focus in the last decades featuring prospective applications in a variety of health-related industries, including food, medicine, pharmaceutics, and cosmetics. Due to its distinct advantages over mammalian-based collagen, including the reduced zoonosis transmission risk, the absence of cultural-religious limitations, the cost-effectiveness of manufacturing process, and its superior bioavailability, the use of collagen derived from fish wastes (i.e., skin, scales) quickly expanded. Moreover, by-products are low cost and the need to minimize fish industry waste's environmental impact paved the way for the use of discards in the development of collagen-based products with remarkable added value. This review summarizes the recent advances in the valorization of fish industry wastes for the extraction of collagen used in several applications. Issues related to processing and characterization of collagen were presented. Moreover, an overview of the most relevant applications in food industry, nutraceutical, cosmetics, tissue engineering, and food packaging of the last three years was introduced. Lastly, the fish-collagen market and the open technological challenges to a reliable recovery and exploitation of this biopolymer were discussed.

Solubility of Amino Acids in the Eutectic Solvent Constituted by Sodium Acetate Trihydrate and Urea and in Its Mixture with Water

Industrial fish and aquaculture processing leads to the generation of a huge quantity of by-products, whose accumulation and mismanagement involve serious environmental consequences as well as high economic losses. Taking advantage of these residues as a source of added-value compounds must be a priority in a circular economy. This work is a preliminary study to analyze the possibility of using the eutectic mixture of urea and sodium acetate trihydrate as a solvent for collagen extraction. To that end, the solid-liquid equilibrium of the system was determined in order to define the exact composition and temperature of the eutectic. The solubility in this solvent of the main amino acids that constitute fish collagen was studied at several temperatures and atmospheric pressure. At 308.15 K, solubilities of the major constituents of the target protein, namely L-proline, trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline, and glycine, were 0.19, 0.16, and 0.12 (mass fraction), respectively. These values increased with temperature. Dilution with water (50 wt%) allowed operation at lower temperature and led to an increase in the solubilities. The van 't Hoff model was satisfactorily used to correlate the experimental data and to calculate apparent properties of dissolution. All the dissolution processes studied herein are endothermic, non-spontaneous, and enthalpy-driven. Both the eutectic and its mixture with water are promising solvents for the design of an environmentally benign process for collagen extraction.

Sodium Danshensu Cream Promotes the Healing of Pressure Ulcers in Mice through the Nrf2/HO-1 and NF-κB Pathways

On the basis of the mice pressure ulcers (PU) model, the protective effect and potential mechanism of sodium Danshensu (SDSS) cream against PU were investigated. The mice were randomly divided into three groups: the negative control group (cream without 0.5 g SDSS), the SDSS group (cream containing 0.5 g SDSS), and the positive group (0.5 g Hirudoid®). After 7 and 14 days of ointment application, the wound-healing rate of the SDSS and positive groups was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). The results of hematoxylin−eosin staining also indicated that SDSS has the potential to promote the healing of PU. In addition, the serum IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and MDA levels decreased significantly (p < 0.01) after 14 days of SDSS treatment, while the SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px activities increased significantly (p < 0.01). In addition, SDSS cream was able to significantly increase the expression of Nrf2, HO-1, GCLM, NQO1, NF-κB p65, NF-κB p50, IKKα, and IKKβ while decreasing the expression of Keap1 and IκBαin the Nrf2/HO-1 and NF-κB pathways. Our research will provide a foundation for the future clinical prevention and treatment of PU with SDSS cream.

Properties of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) Collagen and Gel for Application in Biomaterials

The biochemical properties of collagens and gels from grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were studied to explore the feasibility of their application in biomaterials. The yields of skin collagen (SC) and swim bladder collagen (SBC) extracted from grass carp were 10.41 ± 0.67% and 6.11 ± 0.12% on a wet basis, respectively. Both collagens were characterized as type I collagen. Denaturation temperatures of SC and SBC were 37.41 ± 0.02 °C and 39.82 ± 0.06 °C, respectively. SC and SBC had high fibril formation ability in vitro, and higher values of salinity (NaCl, 0-280 mM) and pH (6-8) in formation solution were found to result in faster self-assembly of SC and SBC fibrils as well as thicker fibrils. Further tests of SC gels with regular morphology revealed that their texture properties and water content were affected by pH and NaCl concentration. The hardness, springiness, and cohesiveness of SC gels increased and the chewiness and water content decreased as pH increased from 7 to 8 and NaCl concentration increased from 140 to 280 mM. These properties suggest that collagens from grass carp may be useful in biomaterial applications in the future.

Physicochemical, Structural and Antioxidant Properties of Collagens from the Swim Bladder of Four Fish Species

This study aimed to isolate and characterize pepsin-solubilized collagen (PSC) from marine and freshwater fish swim bladders. The physicochemical properties, protein pattern, amino acid composition, structure, thermal denaturation temperature, and antioxidant activity of PSC from four different swim bladder sources were investigated and compared. The results demonstrated that the four types of collagen extracted were all type I collagen. The yield of PSC extracted from grass carp (GCSB-PSC), bighead carp (BCSB-PSC), grouper (GSB-PSC), and monkfish swim bladders (MSB-PSC) were 38.98, 27.97, 18.16, and 10.35%, respectively. Compared to the other three PSCs, BCSB-PSC has the highest thermal denaturation temperature (38.60 °C). Based on FTIR spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD) analysis, the extracted PSCs retained the triple helix and secondary structure well. Antioxidant studies showed that in the swim bladders of four species the swim bladder PSC could scavenge DPPH and ABTS radicals. Overall, swim bladders from marine and freshwater fish can be utilized as raw materials for collagen extraction, and the extracted collagen has potential commercial applications.

In Vitro Antioxidant and Antiaging Activities of Collagen and Its Hydrolysate from Mackerel Scad Skin (Decapterus macarellus)

The skin of mackerel scad fish (Decapterus macarellus) is a new source for pepsin-soluble collagen and its hydrolysate, both of which have never been explored. This study aims to characterize and determine the in vitro antioxidant, antiglycation, and antityrosinase activity of pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) and hydrolyzed collagen (HC) from mackerel scad skin. PSC was extracted using 0.5 M acetic acid containing 0.1% pepsin for 48 h at 4 °C. The obtained PSC was then hydrolyzed with collagenase type II (6250 U/g) to produce HC. The PSC yield obtained was 6.39 ± 0.97%, with a pH of 6.76 ± 0.18, while the HC yield was 96% from PSC. SDS-PAGE and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis showed the typical features of type I collagen. HC demonstrated high solubility (66.75–100%) throughout the entire pH range (1–10). The PSC and HC from mackerel scad skin showed antioxidant activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), with IC50 values of 148.55 ± 3.14 ppm and 34.966 ± 0.518 ppm, respectively. In the antiglycation test, PSC had an IC50 value of 239.29 ± 15.67 ppm, while HC had an IC50 of 68.43 ± 0.44 ppm. PSC also exhibited antityrosinase activity, with IC50 values of 234.66 ± 0.185 ppm (on the L-DOPA substrate), while HC had an IC50 value of 79.35 ± 0.5 ppm. Taken together, these results suggest that the skin of mackerel scad fish has potential antiaging properties and can be further developed for pharmaceutical and cosmetic purposes.

Physicochemical Properties of Collagen from the Bone of Harpadon nehereus and Its Protective Effects against Angiotensin II-Induced Injury in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

The physicochemical characterization of a new collagen from the bone of Harpadon nehereus (HNBC) and its protective effects against Ang II-induced injury of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were investigated. The triple helix of HNBC analyzed by SDS-PAGE was formed as (α₁)₂α₂, belonging to type I collagen. UV spectra showed that HNBC had a maximum absorbance at 230 nm. FTIR spectra indicated the triple helical structure and activity of HNBC. The high solubility of HNBC was observed in the low pH ranges (≤4) and NaCl concentrations (≤2%, w/v). The maximum transition (T _m) of HNBC was determined to be 48.5 °C. The amino acid composition analysis showed that glycine, glutamic acid, proline, and alanine were the abundant amino acids available in HNBC. HNBC showed free radical (DPPH and OH·) scavenging activities in the tested concentrations (0.5-6 mg/mL). In addition, HNBC could effectively protect against Ang II-induced injury of HUVEC by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as CAT, SOD, and GSH-Px. Overall, collagen from the bone of H. nehereus has promising prospects in functional food and biomedical industries.

Production of Collagens and Protein Hydrolysates with Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Activity from Sheep Slaughter By-Products

This work aimed to produce collagens and hydrolysates with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity from sheep slaughter by-products. The by-products (sheep and lamb) were treated and extracted. The collagens were hydrolyzed with the enzyme Alcalase^®. The spectra of collagens and hydrolysates were similar (amide bands I, II, III, A, B). The bands presented by the collagens (α₁, α₂, β) were characteristic of type I collagen. The hydrolysates showed molecular weight peptides equal to/lower than 15 kDa. Collagens had a denaturation temperature of 39.32 (lamb) and 36.38 °C (sheep), whereas the hydrolysates did not undergo thermal transition. Hydrolysates showed lower values of antioxidant activity (AA) than the collagens. The collagens from lamb and from sheep displayed an AA of 13.4% (concentration of 0.0002%) and 13.1% (concentration of 0.0005%), respectively. At the concentration of 0.0020%, the lamb hydrolysates displayed an AA of 10.2%, whereas the sheep hydrolysates had an AA of only 1.98%. Collagen also showed higher antimicrobial activity compared to hydrolysates, requiring a lower concentration to inhibit the microorganisms tested. Sheep slaughter by-products proved to be a viable source for obtaining protein hydrolysates and collagens with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, which can be applied in the development of nutraceuticals beneficial to human health.

Extraction and characterization of bovine collagen type and its effects on cell behaviors

Collagen Type V (Col. V) plays an essential role in cell behaviors and has attracted increasing attention in recent years. High-purity Col. V is needed for evaluating its biological properties. In this research, the enzymatic hydrolysis process was combined with ultrafiltration to purify Col. V from the bovine cornea. The purity of Col. V was determined to be above 90% by both sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and high-performance liquid chromatography methods. The effect of Col. V on cell behaviors was evaluated. The circular dichroism spectroscopy results demonstrated that the extracted Col. V exhibited a complete triple helix structure. SDS-PAGE suggested that the molecular weight of Col. V was 440 kDa. The self-assembly experiment revealed that the proportion of Col. V in the collagen mixture can affect the Col. I fiber diameter. The cell culture results implied that Col. V can inhibit fibroblasts (L929) proliferation. The L929 showed maximum mobility when the addition of Col. V was 30%. Thus, Col. V has the effect of inhibiting L929 proliferation and promoting migration. The high-purity Col. V provides useful information for further understanding its biological implications.

Effects of Fucoidan Isolated From Laminaria japonica on Immune Response and Gut Microbiota in Cyclophosphamide-Treated Mice

The effects of Laminaria japonica fucoidan (LF) on immune regulation and intestinal microflora in cyclophosphamide (CTX)-treated mice were investigated in this work. Results indicated that LF significantly enhanced the spleen and thymus indices, promoted spleen lymphocyte and peritoneal macrophages proliferation, and increased the immune-related cytokines production in serum. Moreover, LF could regulate intestinal flora composition, increasing the abundance of Lactobacillaceae and Alistipes, and inhibiting Erysipelotrichia, Turicibacter, Romboutsia, Peptostreptococcaceae, and Faecalibaculum. These results were positively correlated with immune characteristics. Overall, LF could be useful as a new potential strategy to mitigate CTX immunosuppression and intestinal microbiota disorders.

Protein by-products: Composition, extraction, and biomedical applications

Significant upsurge in animal by-products such as skin, bones, wool, hides, feathers, and fats has become a global challenge and, if not properly disposed of, can spread contamination and viral diseases. Animal by-products are rich in proteins, which can be used as nutritional, pharmacologically functional ingredients, and biomedical materials. Therefore, recycling these abundant and renewable by-products and extracting high value-added components from them is a sustainable approach to reclaim animal by-products while addressing scarce landfill resources. This article appraises the most recent studies conducted in the last five years on animal-derived proteins' separation and biomedical application. The effort encompasses an introduction about the composition, an overview of the extraction and purification methods, and the broad range of biomedical applications of these ensuing proteins.

Quantitation of Collagen Type V in Tissues by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled to Mass Spectrometry

A method for quantifying the bovine collagen type V (Col. V) was established based on high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry by the marker peptide external standard. High-purity Col. V was extracted by the acid-enzyme hydrolysis process, and the marker peptide of Col. V was identified by LCQ mass spectrometry as GPAGPMGLTGR. A broad linear range (0.01-5.00 μg/mL) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9984 was achieved, and the limit of detection and limit of quantification were found to be 3.00 × 10^-3 and 6.25 × 10^-3 μg/mL, respectively. The method precision was 1.49%. The recovery rate was determined as 97.1-109.6% with a relative standard deviation less than 5%. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of Col. V contents in the bovine heart, lung, and cornea, which were 0.72 ± 0.01%, 0.23 ± 0.01%, and 2.89 ± 0.00%, respectively. The results show that the proposed method is more suitable for measuring the content of Col. V in tissue samples compared with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The marker peptide method has high accuracy and great reproducibility, and will lay a foundation for the extraction and application of Col. V. Impact statement The accurate quantitative method for collagen type V (Col. V) is particularly important in scientific research, disease diagnosis and treatment, and industrial production. In this article, we proposed a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry method based on the external standard marker peptide to quantify bovine Col. V. This method shows a higher accuracy and recovery rate than enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indicating that it is more suitable for measuring the content of Col. V in tissue samples than ELISA. The establishment of this method has laid a solid foundation for the extraction and application of Col. V.

Effect of Mammalian Tissue Source on the Molecular and Macroscopic Characteristics of UV-Cured Type I Collagen Hydrogel Networks

The tissue source of type I collagen is critical to ensure scalability and regulation-friendly clinical translation of new medical device prototypes. However, the selection of a commercial source of collagen that fulfils both aforementioned requirements and is compliant with new manufacturing routes is challenging. This study investigates the effect that type I collagen extracted from three different mammalian tissues has on the molecular and macroscopic characteristics of a new UV-cured collagen hydrogel. Pepsin-solubilised bovine atelocollagen (BA) and pepsin-solubilised porcine atelocollagen (PA) were selected as commercially available raw materials associated with varying safety risks and compared with in-house acid-extracted type I collagen from rat tails (CRT). All raw materials displayed the typical dichroic and electrophoretic characteristics of type I collagen, while significantly decreased lysine content was measured on samples of PA. Following covalent functionalisation with 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (4VBC), BA and CRT products generated comparable UV-cured hydrogels with significantly increased averaged gel content (G ≥ 97 wt.%), while the porcine variants revealed the highest swelling ratio (SR = 2224 ± 242 wt.%) and an order of magnitude reduction in compression modulus (Ec = 6 ± 2 kPa). Collectively, these results support the use of bovine tissues as a chemically viable source of type I collagen for the realisation of UV-cured hydrogels with competitive mechanical properties and covalent network architectures.

The Bioactivity Prediction of Peptides from Tuna Skin Collagen Using Integrated Method Combining In Vitro and In Silico

The hydrolysates and peptide fractions of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) skin collagen have been successfully studied. The hydrolysates (HPA, HPN, HPS, HBA, HBN, HBS) were the result of the hydrolysis of collagen using alcalase, neutrase, and savinase. The peptide fractions (PPA, PPN, PPS, PBA, PBN, PBS) were the fractions obtained following ultrafiltration of the hydrolysates. The antioxidant activities of the hydrolysates and peptide fractions were studied using the DPPH method. The effects of collagen types, enzymes, and molecular sizes on the antioxidant activities were analyzed using profile plots analysis. The amino acid sequences of the peptides in the fraction with the highest antioxidant activity were analyzed using LC-MS/MS. Finally, their bioactivity and characteristics were studied using in silico analysis. The hydrolysates and peptide fractions provided antioxidant activity (6.17-135.40 µmol AAE/g protein). The lower molecular weight fraction had higher antioxidant activity. Collagen from pepsin treatment produced higher activity than that of bromelain treatment. The fraction from collagen hydrolysates by savinase treatment had the highest activity compared to neutrase and alcalase treatments. The peptides in the PBN and PPS fractions of <3 kDa had antidiabetic, antihypertensive and antioxidant activities. In conclusion, they have the potential to be used in food and health applications.

Preparation and Characterization of Thermally Stable Collagens from the Scales of Lizardfish (Synodus macrops)

Marine collagen is gaining vast interest because of its high biocompatibility and lack of religious and social restrictions compared with collagen from terrestrial sources. In this study, lizardfish (Synodus macrops) scales were used to isolate acid-soluble collagen (ASC) and pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC). Both ASC and PSC were identified as type I collagen with intact triple-helix structures by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and spectroscopy. The ASC and PSC had high amino acids of 237 residues/1000 residues and 236 residues/1000 residues, respectively. Thus, the maximum transition temperature (T_max) of ASC (43.2 °C) was higher than that of PSC (42.5 °C). Interestingly, the T_max of both ASC and PSC was higher than that of rat tail collagen (39.4 °C) and calf skin collagen (35.0 °C), the terrestrial collagen. Solubility tests showed that both ASC and PSC exhibited high solubility in the acidic pH ranges. ASC was less susceptible to the “salting out” effect compared with PSC. Both collagen types were nontoxic to HaCaT and MC3T3-E1 cells, and ASC was associated with a higher cell viability than PSC. These results indicated that ASC from lizardfish scales could be an alternative to terrestrial sources of collagen, with potential for biomedical applications.

Marine-Derived Collagen as Biomaterials for Human Health

Collagen is a kind of biocompatible protein material, which is widely used in medical tissue engineering, drug delivery, cosmetics, food and other fields. Because of its wide source, low extraction cost and good physical and chemical properties, it has attracted the attention of many researchers in recent years. However, the application of collagen derived from terrestrial organisms is limited due to the existence of diseases, religious beliefs and other problems. Therefore, exploring a wider range of sources of collagen has become one of the main topics for researchers. Marine-derived collagen (MDC) stands out because it comes from a variety of sources and avoids issues such as religion. On the one hand, this paper summarized the sources, extraction methods and characteristics of MDC, and on the other hand, it summarized the application of MDC in the above fields. And on the basis of the review, we found that MDC can not only be extracted from marine organisms, but also from the wastes of some marine organisms, such as fish scales. This makes further use of seafood resources and increases the application prospect of MDC.

Comparison of collagen characteristic from the skin and swim bladder of Gulf corvina (Cynoscion othonopterus)

Collagens extracted from different tissues and fish species display different physicochemical properties, thus novel sources require characterization. Gulf corvina (Cynoscion othonopterus) is processed industrially for food. Of the by-products, the swim bladder is used for fish maw, but other tissues are treated as waste. In the present study, pepsin-soluble collagen from Gulf corvina skin and swim bladder was extracted and characterized. Skin produced a higher collagen yield (82 ± 1.53 %) than swim bladder (69 ± 1.60 %). Both collagens exhibited electrophoresis bands corresponding to ([α1(I)]2α2(I)) and β chains, all characteristic of type I collagen. Spectra analysis showed the collagens to maintain their triple-helix structure. The skin collagen had a lower denaturation temperature (29.8 °C) than the swim bladder collagen (32.5 °C), due to its relatively low imino acid content (168 vs. 190 /1000 residues, respectively). Both collagens were highly soluble in acidic pH ranges; Zeta potential values were 5.5 for the skin collagen and 6.2 for the swim bladder collagen. Gulf corvina skin and swim bladder are excellent sources of type I collagen with similar physicochemical properties.

Chemical and Antioxidant Characteristics of Skin-Derived Collagen Obtained by Acid-Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Bigeye Tuna (Thunnus obesus)

The utilization of bigeye tuna skin as a source of collagen has been increasing the value of these skins. In this study, the quality of the skin was studied first. The skin after 14 h freeze-drying showed a high protein level (65.42% ± 0.06%, db), no histamine and a lack of heavy metals. The collagens were extracted through acid and acid-enzymatic methods. The enzymes used were bromelain, papain, pepsin, and trypsin. The two highest-yield collagens were pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) and bromelain-soluble collagen (BSC). Both were type I collagen, based on SDS-PAGE and FTIR analysis. They dissolved very well in dimethyl sulfoxide and distilled water. The pH ranges were 4.60-4.70 and 4.30-4.40 for PSC and BSC, respectively. PSC and BSC were free from As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, and Pb. They showed antioxidant activities, as determined by the DPPH method and the reducing power method. In conclusion, bigeye tuna skin shows good potential as an alternative source of mammalian collagen. Although further work is still required, PSC and BSC showed the potential to be further used as antioxidant compounds in food applications. Other biological tests of these collagens might also lead to other health applications.

Camelina lipid droplets as skin delivery system promotes wound repair by enhancing the absorption of hFGF2

Human basic fibroblast growth factor (hFGF2) is widely recognized for accelerating skin wound healing in both animal models and randomized clinical trials. However, the low skin permeation and bioavailability of hFGF2 remain the most limiting factors in the pharmacological application. For the first time, Camelina Lipid Droplets (CLD) delivery system was displayed important virtue, by promoting the skin absorption of hFGF2, which is a key factor that accelerates the skin wound repair, and provide a new alternative for skin therapy. In this study, we used the CLD as a safer material to prepare the nanoparticles, which were characterized by size and morphology. Our data revealed that particle sizes of Camelina Lipid Droplets linked to hFGF2 (CLD-hFGF2) were around 133.5 nm; it also displayed that the complex of CLD-hFGF2 penetrates the skin barrier in deeper than an individual hFGF2. This suggests that once the hFGF2 is fixed onto the surface of CLD, it can cross the stratum corneum and play a therapeutic role into the dermis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that CLD-hFGF2 enhances fibroblast migration, and significantly improves skin regeneration for accelerating wound healing without any significant toxicity. This paper highlights the importance of CLD as an emerging delivery system; it is also providing a new and applicable therapeutic research direction through enhancing the skin permeation of hFGF2 to accelerate wound healing.

Fish Waste: From Problem to Valuable Resource

Following the growth of the global population and the subsequent rapid increase in urbanization and industrialization, the fisheries and aquaculture production has seen a massive increase driven mainly by the development of fishing technologies. Accordingly, a remarkable increase in the amount of fish waste has been produced around the world; it has been estimated that about two-thirds of the total amount of fish is discarded as waste, creating huge economic and environmental concerns. For this reason, the disposal and recycling of these wastes has become a key issue to be resolved. With the growing attention of the circular economy, the exploitation of underused or discarded marine material can represent a sustainable strategy for the realization of a circular bioeconomy, with the production of materials with high added value. In this study, we underline the enormous role that fish waste can have in the socio-economic sector. This review presents the different compounds with high commercial value obtained by fish byproducts, including collagen, enzymes, and bioactive peptides, and lists their possible applications in different fields.

Biocompatibility, hemostatic properties, and wound healing evaluation of tilapia skin collagen sponges

Dialyzed tilapia skin collagen sponge (DTSCS) and self-assembled tilapia skin collagen sponge (STSCS) were prepared by freeze-drying. The raw components used in the fabrication of DTSCS and STSCS were separated and purified from tilapia fish skin. It is anticipated that these collagen sponges could be developed into medical dressings for hemostasis and wound healing. The aim of the present research was to explore the possibility of DTSCS and STSCS as medical dressings and compare their differences by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water absorption measurement, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), measurement of porosity, cytotoxicity, hemolysis, in vivo biocompatibility, and evaluation of hemostatic performance and wound healing. The results indicate that DTSCS and STSCS are suitable materials for use in medical applications with a loose and porous structure, high water absorption, high porosity, and high thermal stability. The materials also displayed good biocompatibility, including excellent blood compatibility, a lack of cytotoxicity, with no apparent rejection following implantation. STSCS exhibited rapid hemostasis and promoted healing, with slightly greater efficacy than DTSCS. The hemostatic properties and promotion of healing in DTSCS was similar to that of commercial bovine collagen sponge. Therefore, DTSCS and STSCS both represented excellent potential candidate materials for use as hemostatic agents and wound dressings.

Optimization of Extraction of Bioactive Peptides from Monkfish (Lophius litulon) and Characterization of Their Role in H2O2-Induced Lesion

Background: Marine fish meat has been widely used for the extraction of bioactive peptides. This study was aimed to optimize the preparation of monkfish muscle peptides (LPs) using response surface methodology (RSM) and explore the antioxidant activities of <1 kDa LPs. Methods: Peptides were prepared from the muscles of monkfish (Lophius litulon), and five proteases were tested to hydrolyze muscle proteins. The hydrolysate that was treated using neutrase showed the highest degree of hydrolysis (DH) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activities. Results: The optimized conditions were as follows: water/material ratio of 5.4:1, a time span of 5 h, pH of 7.0, enzyme concentration of 2000 U/g, and temperature of 45 °C; the maximum DPPH scavenging activity and DH were 92.861% and 19.302%, respectively. LPs exhibited appreciable antioxidant activities, including DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, 2,2′-azinobis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate (ABTS) radical, and superoxide anion scavenging activities. LPs attenuated H₂O₂-related oxidative injury in RAW264.7 cells, reduced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) levels. Conclusion: We concluded that LPs could be an ideal source of bioactive peptides from monkfish and also have pharmaceutical potential.

Carrageenan-based physically crosslinked injectable hydrogel for wound healing and tissue repairing applications

In this study, a novel injectable hydrogel based on iota and kappa carrageenan, locust bean gum and gelatin was prepared for wound healing and tissue repairing applications. This injectable hydrogel was obtained via physical crosslinking. FTIR analysis confirmed the physical interaction between the biopolymeric components of the hydrogel. The prepared injectable hydrogel exhibited shear-thinning characteristics and could be injected for minimally invasive applications. Also, the hydrogel showed a porous structure, physiological and mechanical stability and biocompatibility. The in vitro cell culture studies showed that fibroblasts were able to grow, adhere and spread inside the hydrogel, indicating that hydrogel could support tissue repair. Moreover, hydrogel could be useful for the delivery of biomolecules. Vascular endothelial growth factor was encapsulated within the hydrogel and subsequently released, which accelerated the migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells and facilitated in vitro wound healing. Overall, the results indicate that hydrogel can be a potential injectable delivery vehicle for wound healing and tissue repair.

Collagen Peptides from Swim Bladders of Giant Croaker (Nibea japonica) and Their Protective Effects against H2O2-Induced Oxidative Damage toward Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

Five different proteases were used to hydrolyze the swim bladders of Nibea japonica and the hydrolysate treated by neutrase (collagen peptide named SNNHs) showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity. The extraction process of SNNHs was optimized by response surface methodology, and the optimal conditions were as follows: a temperature of 47.2 °C, a pH of 7.3 and an enzyme concentration of 1100 U/g, which resulted in the maximum DPPH clearance rate of 95.44%. Peptides with a Mw of less than 1 kDa (SNNH-1) were obtained by ultrafiltration, and exhibited good scavenging activity for hydroxyl radicals, ABTS radicals and superoxide anion radicals. Furthermore, SNNH-1 significantly promoted the proliferation of HUVECs, and the protective effect of SNNH-1 against oxidative damage of H2O2-induced HUVECs was investigated. The results indicated that all groups receiving SNNH-1 pretreatment showed an increase in GSH-Px, SOD, and CAT activities compared with the model group. In addition, SNNH-1 pretreatment reduced the levels of ROS and MDA in HUVECs with H2O2-induced oxidative damage. These results indicate that collagen peptides from swim bladders of Nibea japonica can significantly reduce the oxidative stress damage caused by H2O2 in HUVECs and provides a basis for the application of collagen peptides in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

Asymmetric Membranes: A Potential Scaffold for Wound Healing Applications

Currently, due to uprising concerns about wound infections, healing agents have been regarded as one of the major solutions in the treatment of different skin lesions. The usage of temporary barriers can be an effective way to protect wounds or ulcers from dangerous agents and, using these carriers can not only improve the healing process but also they can minimize the scarring and the pain suffered by the human. To cope with this demand, researchers struggled to develop wound dressing agents that could mimic the structural and properties of native skin with the capability to inhibit bacterial growth. Hence, asymmetric membranes that can impair bacterial penetration and avoid exudate accumulation as well as wound dehydration have been introduced. In general, synthetic implants and tissue grafts are expensive, hard to handle (due to their fragile nature and poor mechanical properties) and their production process is very time consuming, while the asymmetric membranes are affordable and their production process is easier than previous epidermal substitutes. Motivated by this, here we will cover different topics, first, the comprehensive research developments of asymmetric membranes are reviewed and second, general properties and different preparation methods of asymmetric membranes are summarized. In the two last parts, the role of chitosan based-asymmetric membranes and electrospun asymmetric membranes in hastening the healing process are mentioned respectively. The aforementioned membranes are inexpensive and possess high antibacterial and satisfactory mechanical properties. It is concluded that, despite the promising current investigations, much effort is still required to be done in asymmetric membranes.

Label-free quantitative proteomics analysis of skin of yellow drum (Nibea albiflora) reveals immune mechanism against Cryptocaryon irritans

To explore the resistance mechanism of locally infected skin of yellow drum (Nibea albiflora) against Cryptocaryon irritans infection, N. albiflora were infected with C. irritans at a median lethal concentration of 2050 theronts/g fish. Then, the skin of the infected group (24 hT and 72 hT) and the control group (24 hC and 72 hC) were sampled at 24 h and 72 h for quantitative proteomics analysis. A total of 643 proteins were identified, of which 61 proteins were significantly affected by interaction between time and infection, 83 and 119 proteins were significantly affected by the infection and time, respectively. In addition, 17, 61, 81 and 45 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were obtained from pairwise comparison (24 hT vs 24 hC, 72 hT vs 72 hC, 72 hT vs 24 hT and 72 hC vs 24 hC), respectively. DEPs in 24 hT vs 24 hC and 72 hT vs 72 hC were mainly enriched in Gene Ontology terms (transferase activity, protein folding and isomerase activity) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways (biosynthesis of antibiotics, carbon metabolism and Citrate cycle). Among them, enriched DEPs were malate dehydrogenase 2 (MDH2), malate dehydrogenase 1 ab (MDH 1 ab), citrate synthase, etc. Immune-related DEPs such as complement component C3 and Cell division cycle 42 were involved in response to stimulus and signal transduction, etc. Also, DEPs such as collagen, heat shock protein 75 and MDH2 play a role in helping fish skin wounds to heal and provide energy. Furthermore, protein-protein interaction analysis indicated that 18 proteins such as MDH2, MDH 1 ab, complement C3 and collagen were interrelated. In conclusion, this study found that many proteins in N. albiflora contribute to resist against C. irritans and promote fish recovery.

Optimization of the collagen extraction from Nile tilapia skin (Oreochromis niloticus) and its hydrogel with hyaluronic acid

Nile tilapia skin, an abundant waste from fish processing, can be used for collagen extraction, which has a high aggregated value for biomedical applications. Collagen extraction was conducted under different reaction conditions (time, temperature, and concentration of acetic acid) in order to optimize the yield without compromising the integrity of the collagen. Temperature and time were responsible for increased yield. The extraction at 4 and 20 °C produced the acid-solubilized collagen (ASC) with the intact triple helix and was analysed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and circular dichroism (CD). The optimized ASC (which used 0.35 mol/L of acetic acid at 20 °C) was consumed to obtain for the first-time fish-based hydrogels with hyaluronic acid (HA) crosslinked with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropryl carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The hydrogel was characterized by FT-IR, rheology, swelling, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confirming that cross-linking was accomplished. It possesses a robust organized network, swells 255 % in PBS and bears interconnected pores with a diameter in the range of 10-100 μm. Until now, col-HA hydrogels crosslinked with EDC/NHS have not been reported in literature with collagen from Nile Tilapia skin. Fish collagen can be a better option than those from land-based animals (cow and pig).

Pepsin-Soluble Collagen from the Skin of Lophius litulo: A Preliminary Study Evaluating Physicochemical, Antioxidant, and Wound Healing Properties

The structure of pepsin-solubilized collagen (PSC) obtained from the skin of Lophius litulon was analyzed using the sodium dodecylsulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SDS-PAGE results showed that PSC from Lophius litulon skin was collagen type I and had collagen-specific α1, α2, β, and γ chains. FTIR results indicated that the infrared spectrum of PSC ranged from 400 to 4000 cm^-1, with five main amide bands. SEM revealed the microstructure of PSC, which consisted of clear fibrous and porous structures. In vitro antioxidant studies demonstrated that PSC revealed the scavenging ability for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), HO·, O₂^-·, and ABTS·. Moreover, animal experiments were conducted to evaluate the biocompatibility of PSC. The collagen sponge group showed a good biocompatibility in the skin wound model and may play a positive role in the progression of the healing process. The cumulative results suggest that collagen from the skin of Lophius litulon has potential applications in wound healing due to its good biocompatibility.

Protective effects of pentadecapeptide derived from Cyclaina sinensis against cyclophosphamide-induced hepatotoxicity

Our study was aimed at investigating the hepatoprotective effects of pentadecapeptide (RVAPEEHPVEGRYLV) from Cyclaina sinensis (SCSP) against cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Our results show that SCSP can significantly alleviate CTX-induced hepatotoxicity by decreasing the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), triglyceride (TG) and malondialdehyde (MDA), and increasing the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) in the liver. In addition, the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were also significantly decreased in the liver tissues when treated with SCSP. Moreover, the protein levels of the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-mediated nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway and apoptosis-related proteins were also restored by SCSP treatment. Overall, our results suggest that SCSP can potentially improve the CTX-induced hepatotoxicity.
