Conductive biomass-based composite wires with cross-linked anionic nanocellulose and cationic nanochitin as scaffolds

Effect of incorporating modified pinhão starch in alginate-based hydrogel beads for encapsulation of bioactive compounds by hydrodynamic electrospray ionization jetting

Known for its antioxidant properties, Araucaria angustifolia bracts extract was encapsulated using hydrodynamic electrospray ionization jetting within calcium alginate cross-linked hydrogel beads with varying contents of modified pinhão starch. The rheological properties of the dispersions and analysis of the physicochemical and digestive properties of encapsulated beads were studied. The results demonstrated that dispersions containing starch exhibited higher viscosity and reduced compliance values, indicating samples with stronger, more compact, and stable structures that are less susceptible to deformation. This was confirmed by the beads rupture strength test. The ATR-FTIR analysis suggest that no new chemical bonds were formed, with encapsulation being responsible only for physical interactions between the functional groups of the polymers used and the active groups of the compounds present in the extract. The thermal stability of starch-containing beads was higher. Total tannins were higher in beads containing starch, with 53.61 %, 56.83 %, and 66.99 % encapsulation yield for samples with 2 %, 4 %, and 6 % starch, respectively, and the remaining antioxidant activity ranged from 96.04 % to 81.08 %. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion simulation indicated that the highest releases occurred in the intestinal phase, ranging from 60.72 % to 63.50 % for the release of total phenolic compounds.

Nanochitin: Chemistry, Structure, Assembly, and Applications

Chitin, a fascinating biopolymer found in living organisms, fulfills current demands of availability, sustainability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, functionality, and renewability. A feature of chitin is its ability to structure into hierarchical assemblies, spanning the nano- and macroscales, imparting toughness and resistance (chemical, biological, among others) to multicomponent materials as well as adding adaptability, tunability, and versatility. Retaining the inherent structural characteristics of chitin and its colloidal features in dispersed media has been central to its use, considering it as a building block for the construction of emerging materials. Top-down chitin designs have been reported and differentiate from the traditional molecular-level, bottom-up synthesis and assembly for material development. Such topics are the focus of this Review, which also covers the origins and biological characteristics of chitin and their influence on the morphological and physical-chemical properties. We discuss recent achievements in the isolation, deconstruction, and fractionation of chitin nanostructures of varying axial aspects (nanofibrils and nanorods) along with methods for their modification and assembly into functional materials. We highlight the role of nanochitin in its native architecture and as a component of materials subjected to multiscale interactions, leading to highly dynamic and functional structures. We introduce the most recent advances in the applications of nanochitin-derived materials and industrialization efforts, following green manufacturing principles. Finally, we offer a critical perspective about the adoption of nanochitin in the context of advanced, sustainable materials.

Novel lanthanum vanadate-based nanocomposite for simultaneously electrochemical detection of dopamine and uric acid in fetal bovine serum

The abnormal levels of two biological molecules, dopamine (DA) and Uric acid (UA), in human body are symptoms of diseases such as Parkinson's disease and arrhythmia. A novel lanthanum vanadate and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (LaV-MWCNTs) composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was developed and utilized as an efficient electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA. LaV-MWCNTs composite was successfully fabricated by a facile ultrasonic self-assembly method and identified by means of a series of successive measurements including XPS, XRD, FT-IR and FE-SEM. The LaV-MWCNTs modified GCE shows the concentration linear ranges of DA and UA are 2-100 μΜ using DPV. The limits of detection (LODs; signal-to-noise ratio of 3, S/N = 3) of the LaV-MWCNTs modified GCE sensor for DA and UA were calculated to be 0.046 μM and 0.025 μM, respectively. The feasibility of using the LaV-MWCNTs modified GCE sensor to detect DA and UA in a typical biological fluid, fetal bovine serum, was also evaluated by the standard addition method.

Rheological behavior of nanocellulose gels at various calcium chloride concentrations

In this work, the effects of calcium chloride (CaCl₂) concentration on the creep-recovery, linear and nonlinear rheological behavior of nanocellulose gels had been investigated to quantify gel properties. The absolute zeta potential of nanocellulose gels were decreased as the CaCl₂ concentration increased, which was related to the electrostatic repulsion that origin from carboxyl group could be effectively screened with increasing CaCl₂ concentration. Rheological measurements further confirmed this result for nanocellulose gels, which revealed that the increased modulus and viscoelastic properties were obtained in the presence of CaCl₂. The rheological properties of nanocellulose gels were showed to depend on CaCl₂ concentration. The enhanced gel network structure was related to the Ca²⁺ ions that promoted crosslink between nanocellulose by salt bridge. This work highlighted the potential of using electrostatic complexation between nanocellulose and Ca²⁺ ions to form gels, and demonstrated the tunability of the rheological behavior by adjusting the concentration of CaCl₂.

Liquid and Solid Functional Bio-Based Coatings

The development of new bio-based coating materials to be applied on cellulosic and plastic based substrates, with improved performances compared to currently available products and at the same time with improved sustainable end of life options, is a challenge of our times. Enabling cellulose or bioplastics with proper functional coatings, based on biopolymer and functional materials deriving from agro-food waste streams, will improve their performance, allowing them to effectively replace fossil products in the personal care, tableware and food packaging sectors. To achieve these challenging objectives some molecules can be used in wet or solid coating formulations, e.g., cutin as a hydrophobic water- and grease-repellent coating, polysaccharides such as chitosan-chitin as an antimicrobial coating, and proteins as a gas barrier. This review collects the available knowledge on functional coatings with a focus on the raw materials used and methods of dispersion/application. It considers, in addition, the correlation with the desired final properties of the applied coatings, thus discussing their potential.

Vapor phase polymerization for electronically conductive nanopaper based on bacterial cellulose/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)

Eco-friendly conductive polymer nanocomposites have garnered attention as an effective alternative for conventional conductive nanocomposites. Here, we report the fabrication and optimization of flexible, self-standing, and conductive bacterial cellulose/poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (BC/PEDOT) nanocomposites using the vapor phase polymerization (VPP) method. Eco-friendly bacterial cellulose (BC) is used as a flexible matrix, and the highly conductive PEDOT polymer is introduced into the BC matrix to achieve electronic conductivity. We demonstrate that vapor phase polymerized BC/PEDOT composites exhibit more than 10 times lower sheet resistance (18 Ω/square) compared to solution polymerized BC/PEDOT (188 Ω/square). The resultant BC/PEDOT fabricated could be bent up to 100 times and completely rolled up without a notable decrease in electronic performance. Moreover, bent BC/PEDOT films enable operation of a green light-emitting diode (LED) light, indicating the flexibility and stability of conductive BC/PEDOT films. Overall, this study suggests a strategy for the development of eco-friendly, flexible, and conductive nanocomposite films.

Industrial sea food residues, mainly crab and shrimp shells, are considered to be the most promising and abundant source of chitin. In-depth understanding of the biological properties of chitin and scientific advancements in the field of nanotechnology have enabled the development of high-performance chitin nanomaterials. Nanoscale chitin is of great economic value as an efficient functional and reinforcement material for a wide range of applications ranging from water purification to tissue engineering. The use of polymers and nanochitin to produce (bio) nanocomposites offers a good opportunity to prepare bioplastic materials with enhanced functional and structural properties. Most processes for nanochitin isolation rely on the use of chemical, physical or mechanical methods. Chitin-based nanocomposites are fabricated by various methods, involving electrospinning, freeze drying, etc. This review discusses the progress and new developments in the isolation and physico-chemical characterization of chitin; it also highlights the processing of nanochitin in various composite and functional materials.
