Mechanism of carboxymethyl chitosan hybrid montmorillonite and adsorption of Pb(II) and Congo red by CMC-MMT organic-inorganic hybrid composite

Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide-Modified Laponite@Diatomite Composites for Enhanced Adsorption Performance of Organic Pollutants

This work aims to enhance the adsorption performance of Laponite @diatomite for organic pollutants by modifying it with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The microstructure and morphology of the CTAB-modified Laponite @diatomite material were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and TG. Furthermore, the influences of key parameters, containing pH, adsorbent dosage, reaction time, and reaction temperature, on the adsorption process were investigated. The kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm models of the adsorption process were analyzed. Finally, potential adsorption mechanisms were given based on the characterization. The research findings indicate that CTAB-La@D exhibits good adsorption performance toward Congo red (CR) over a broad pH range. The maximum adsorption capacity of CR was 451.1 mg/g under the optimum conditions (dosage = 10 mg, contact time = 240 min, initial CR concentration = 100 mg/L, temperature = 25 °C, and pH = 7). The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption isotherms indicated that the adsorption process of CR was more in line with the Langmuir model, and it was physical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis illustrates that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Additionally, the mechanisms of electrostatic adsorption and hydrophobic effect adsorption of CR were investigated through XPS and FTIR analysis. This work provides an effective pathway for designing high-performance adsorbents for the removal of organic dye, and the synthesized materials hold great capability for practical utilization in the treatment of wastewater.

Tetracycline decontamination from aqueous media using nanocomposite adsorbent based on starch-containing magnetic montmorillonite modified by ZIF-67

In the present study, starch/zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) modified magnetic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) as an emerging antibiotic-based contaminant from aqueous media. The surface properties of the adsorbents were investigated using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX-Map, XPS, TEM, BET, and VSM analysis. The specific surface area of MMT, St/MMT-MnFe2O4, and St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite samples were found to be 15.63, 20.54, and 588.41 m2/g, respectively. The influence of pH, adsorbent amount, initial TC concentration, temperature, contact time, and coexisting ions on TC elimination was explored in a batch adsorption system. The kinetic and equilibrium data were well matched with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of TC were obtained to be 40.24, 66.1, and 135.2 mg/g by MMT, St/MMT-MnFe2O4, and St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite adsorbents, respectively. Also, thermodynamic studies illustrated that the TC adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the magnetic nanocomposite adsorbent St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 showed good reusability and could be recycled for up to five cycles. This excellent adsorption performance, coupled with the facile separation of the magnetic nanocomposite, gave St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 a high potential for TC removal from aqueous media.

On-line extraction and determination of coumarins compounds from mouse plasma based on a homemade phenyl-hybrid monolithic adsorbent

A phenyl-hybrid monolithic adsorbent was prepared using an organic monomer of ethylene glycol phenyl ether acrylate and inorganic monomers of tetramethoxysilane and vinyltrimethoxysilane, via polycondensation and polymerization in a stainless-steel column, which shows porous structure and multiple functional groups, according to the measurements of scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption method and infrared spectroscopy. The resulting hybrid phenyl-based monolith was used as a solid-phase extraction column, combining with an analytical column in conjunction with high-performance liquid chromatography system for the on-line extraction and determination of coumarins (praeruptorin A and praeruptorin B) in Peucedani Radix from mouse plasma. The homemade hybrid monolithic solid-phase extraction column exhibits good removal ability for the sample matrices, as well as unique selectivity for the two praeruptorins. Methodology validation results indicate that the present method is applicable for the on-line extraction and quantitative analysis of praeruptorin A and praeruptorin B in Peucedani Radix from mouse plasma with a limit of quantitation 0.06 μg/mL and a linear range 0.06-5 μg/mL (r＞0.999), thus indicating the present method is a promising and alternative method for the quantitative determination of similar target components with micro or trace concentration from complex extract solution and plasma.

Organic-inorganic interface chemistry for sustainable materials

This mini-review focuses on up-to-date advances of hybrid materials consisting of organic and inorganic components and their applications in different chemical processes. The purpose of forming such hybrids is mainly to functionalize and stabilize inorganic supports by attaching an organic linker to enhance their performance towards a target application. The interface chemistry is present with the emphasis on the sustainability of their components, chemical changes in substrates during synthesis, improvements of their physical and chemical properties, and, finally, their implementation. The latter is the main sectioning feature of this review, while we present the most prosperous applications ranging from catalysis, through water purification and energy storage. Emphasis was given to materials that can be classified as green to the best in our consideration. As the summary, the current situation on developing hybrid materials as well as directions towards sustainable future using organic-inorganic hybrids are presented.

Preparation and Superstrong Adsorption of a Novel La(Ⅲ)-Crosslinked Alginate/Modified Diatomite Macroparticle Composite for Anionic Dyes Removal from Aqueous Solutions

In order to solve the problem of dye pollution of the water environment, a green macroparticle composite (CPAM-Dia/SA-La) as a bioadsorbent was prepared through a sodium alginate (SA) reaction with a polyacrylamide (CPAM)-modified diatomite (Dia) and further La(III) ion crosslinking polymerization, and characterized by various analytical methods. The important preparation and adsorption conditions of the composite were explored by the adsorption of Acid blue 113 (AB 113) and Congo red (CR) dyes. The dye adsorption efficiency was evaluated. The results show that CPAM-Dia/SA-La composite prepared under the optimized conditions displays superstrong adsorption capacities of 2907 and 1578 mg/g for AB 113 and CR and almost 100% removal efficiency within 60 min adsorption time at pH 2.0 and 298 K, and they decrease slightly with the pH increase to 10. The fitting of equilibrium data to the Langmuir model is the best and the adsorption kinetic processes can be expressed by the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption processes are both spontaneous and exothermic. The analysis results of FT-IR and XPS revealed that the superstrong adsorption of CPAM-Dia/SA-La for dyes. The composite adsorbed by the dye can be recycled. CPAM-Dia/SA-La is a promising biosorbent for dye wastewater treatment.

Synergistic roles of montmorillonite and organic matter in reducing bioavailable state of chromium in tannery sludge

Organic matter (OM) has an excellent retention effect on stabilizing chromium (Cr), and functional groups on OM play a predominant role in this process. Based on this result, it is found that a considerable amount of Cr in tannery sludge is immobilized from ion exchangeable species into bound species, benefiting from complexing reaction with functional groups. Especially, the mentioned immobilizing process is enhanced in way of adding with montmorillonite (MMT) which performs adsorption reaction with Cr, as well as plays interaction with functional groups. The result is confirmed by employing density functional theory (DFT) analysis, suggesting the binding ability among Cr, functional groups, and MMT is stronger (- 77.36503 eV) than that of the system of Cr and MMT (- 61.29942 eV), indicating the synergetic roles of OM and MMT. This synergetic role could also be illustrated by a new peak (Cr-OH 20.1%) shown in XPS result. Meanwhile, DFT analysis emphasizes that functional groups on OM give the response for binding with Cr in the order of hydroxyl (-OH) > carboxyl (-COOH) > epoxy (-COC), and all the functional groups tend to donate electron to bind with Cr. In addition, the stabilizing process shows a better fitting effect with pseudo second-order kinetic model (R² > 0.94), indicating that exchangeable Cr mass transfer and chemical adsorption occur simultaneously.

High-strength and anti-bacterial BSA/carboxymethyl chitosan/silver nanoparticles/calcium alginate composite hydrogel membrane for efficient dye/salt separation

In order to solve the problems of poor mechanical property, non-antibacterial and low flux of calcium alginate (CaAlg) membrane, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) for improving CaAlg membrane in this paper. Meanwhile, the dispersion property of silver nanoparticles and the mechanical property, thermal stability, antibacterial property and filtration efficiency of the composite membrane were explored. The results illustrated CMCS observably strengthened the mechanical property and thermal stability of the composite membrane, and AgNPs endowed the composite membrane with excellent antibacterial property. The flux of the BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg composite membrane was raised compared to CaAlg membrane. Finally, the viscose fiber/polyethylene terephthalate fiber (VF-PET) nonwoven fabric was introduced as the support layer to further improve the filtration flux and mechanical property of the composite membrane. VF-PET/BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg membrane had a rejection rate of over 99.0 % for dye molecules and <9.0 % for salt ions, while the flux maintained 38.5 L·m^-2·h^-1. Furthermore, VF-PET/BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg membrane also had excellent separation effect on actual dye wastewater. The separation of dye and salt by the membrane mainly depended on the screening mechanism of membrane pore size, rather than adsorption. The composite membrane had an outstanding performance on the separation of dye molecules and inorganic salt ions.

Mesoporous crosslinked chitosan-activated clinoptilolite biocomposite for the removal of anionic and cationic dyes

A mesoporous crosslinked chitosan-activated clinoptilolite biocomposite (CS-GA/ACP) was prepared with chitosan (CS) as the substrate and glutaraldehyde (GA) as the crosslinking agent. Structural analysis of the CS-GA/ACP composite beads was performed using FTIR, SEM, and BET techniques. The adsorption properties of the CS-GA/ACP for Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) removal were examined using a batch method. The effects of CS loading, CS-GA/ACP dosages (0.005-0.25 g), pH values (3-11), initial concentrations (30-300 mg/L), contact time (5-120 min), ionic strength, and temperatures (25-65 ℃) on the adsorption of CR and MB on the CS-GA/ACP composite beads were investigated. The pseudo-second-order kinetics could better describe the adsorption process than the pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the Langmuir isotherms model agreed well with the experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacities of the CS-GA/ACP for CR and MB were 180.59 mg/g and 143.67 mg/g at 25 ℃, respectively. The proposed mechanism studies showed that the possible interaction between the adsorbent and dye molecules were Yoshida H-bonding, dipole-dipole H-bonding, electrostatic interaction and n-π interaction. The CS-GA/ACP can be recycled to remove dyes without significant loss of efficacy, and the adsorption of dyes on the CS-GA/ACP is spontaneous endothermic adsorption. Overall, the CS-GA/ACP showed an excellent performance for dyes removal in aqueous solution and could be a practical candidate for industrial applications.

Toxicological assessment and adsorptive removal of lead (Pb) and Congo red (CR) from water by synthesized iron oxide/activated carbon (Fe3O4/AC) nanocomposite

Heavy metals and dyes are the persistent pollutants causing harmful effects on living organisms in different ecosystems. In current study, removal of Lead (Pb) and Congo Red (CR) from water was performed using Iron oxide/Activated Carbon (Fe₃O₄/AC) nanocomposite. Ferromagnetic behavior of the nanocomposite is the crucial advantage in separation of nanocomposite after biosorption process. The biosorbent was thermally stable till 800 °C of temperature. The synthesized biosorbent was polycrystalline in nature comprising of elements like C, O, Fe. The influence of various experimental conditions was optimized through batch study with the biosorption capacity of 144.92 mg/g (Pb) and 122.22 mg/g (CR) at pH 5-6, Fe₃O₄/AC dosage (0.04 g) for 40 mg/L of Pb and CR. Toxicological assessment was performed using Danio rerio and seeds to evaluate the harmful effects of pollutants on these organisms. The phytotoxicity results revealed that growth inhibition of seeds lies between 85.64% and 55.92% (Pb) and 77.94%-51.85% (CR). The LC₅₀ value of Pb on the Danio rerio was found to be 20.98 mg/L. In contrast, we observed significant increase in LC₅₀ value about 86.82 mg/L after biosorption of Pb onto biosorbent.

A critical review on production of biopolymers from algae biomass and their applications

Algae is abundantly present in our ecosystems and can be easily extracted and used for production of biopolymers. Algae does not produce any anthropogenic, harmful effects, has a good growth rate, and cultivable in wastewater. This literature elucidates the potential of algae biomass by comparing various seaweed and microalgae strains. The routes for biopolymer production were portrayed and their novel methods of isolation such as microwave assisted, ultrasound assisted, and subcritical water assisted extraction are discussed in detail. These novel methods are observed to be highly efficient compared to conventional solvent extraction, with the microwave assisted and ultrasound assisted processes yielding 33% and 5% more biopolymer respectively than the conventional method. Biopolymers are used in variety of applications such as environmental remediation, adsorbent and antioxidant. Biopolymer is shown to be highly effective in the removal of potentially toxic elements and is seen to extract more than 40 mg PTE/g biopolymer.

Instantaneous Adsorption of Synthetic Dyes from an Aqueous Environment Using Kaolinite Nanotubes: Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Studies

Innovative kaolinite nanotubes (KNTs) are synthesized utilizing a simple technique involving a sonication-induced exfoliation process, followed by chemical scrolling reactions. The KNTs as a material have high reactivity and promising surface area to be used in the purification of water from cationic dyes (safranin (SF) and malachite green (MG)) and anionic dyes (methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR)). The kinetic studies of the four dyes SF, MG, CR, and MO show an equilibration time interval of 240 min. The SF, MG, CR, and MO dyes' uptake reactions are in agreement with the kinetic behavior of the pseudo-first-order model and the equilibrium properties of the Langmuir model. Such modeling results, in addition to the Gaussian energies from the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model (SF (1.01 kJ/mol), MG (1.08 kJ/mol), CR (1.11 kJ/mol), and MO (1.65 kJ/mol)), hypothesize monolayer adsorption of the four dyes by physical reactions. The KNTs show theoretical q _max values of 431.6, 489.9, 626.2, and 675.5 (mg/g) for SF, MG, CR, and MO, respectively. The thermodynamic examination of SF, MG, CR, and MO adsorption reactions using KNTs verifies their adsorption by exothermic and spontaneous reactions. The KNT adsorbents achieve promising adsorption results in the presence of different coexisting ions and show significant recyclability properties. Therefore, the production of KNTs from kaolinite shows a strong effect on inducing the textural, physicochemical, and adsorption properties of clay layers as well as their affinity for different species of synthetic dyes.

Insight into carbohydrate polymers (chitosan and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate) intercalated bentonite-based nanocomposites as multifunctional and environmental adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide

Two-hybrid products of bentonite intercalated carbohydrate polymers (chitosan (BE.P.CH) and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer (BE/P.HEMA/MMA)) were synthesized as enhanced adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide (MPP). The intercalation processes induced the affinity and the capacity of bentonite achieving the best value at pH 8. The maximum MPP adsorption capacities of BE (287.3 mg/g), BE/P.CH (634.5 mg/g), and BE/P.HEMA-MMA (868.5 mg/g) obtained after 300 min, 240 min, and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic properties of BE follow the Pseudo-second order behavior (R² = 0.93) while BE/P.CH and BE/P.HEMA-MMA are of Pseudo-First order behavior (R² > 0.92). Based on the equilibrium studies, the three products are of Freundlich isotherm behavior (R² > 0.9) and the uptake is of multilayer forms on heterogeneous surfaces. The Gaussian energies (>8 KJ/mol), Gibbs free energies (>20 to <40 KJ/mol), and enthalpies (>40 to <80 KJ/mol) give an indication about adsorption mechanism involved chemical and physical reactions. The thermodynamics of MPP uptake reactions by the three products are of endothermic and spontaneous behaviors. The MPP uptake in the presence of NH⁺⁴, PO₄^-3, Mn⁺², and Pb⁺² competitive ions reflects enhancement in the affinity of BE after the integration between it and the selected polymers.

Removal of Sr(II) from water with highly-elastic carboxymethyl chitosan gel

A carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) gel was prepared by crosslinking and functionalizing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) using a one-pot reaction under mild conditions. Structural characterizations have revealed that the prepared O-CMC/EDTA gel has 3D porous structure with abundant carboxyl groups distributed in the pores. The prepared O-CMC/EDTA gel was used to adsorb Sr(II) ions in water while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to explore the adsorption mechanism. In order to analyze the adsorption process, we performed the adsorption kinetics and isotherms. The results show that the maximum adsorption capacity of O-CMC/EDTA for Sr (II) ions is about 105.81 mg/g at pH = 7. Notably, it exhibited fairly high compression elasticity due to multiple hydrogen bonds in the network. The showed no deformation after 30 continuous compression cycles. The ratio of O-CMC:EDTA significantly influences the adsorption property by affecting the crosslinking degree as well as the number of active sites. The high adsorption capacity, elasticity, and reusability have demonstrated that the prepared material is an effective and promising adsorbent for Sr(II) removal.
