Abstract
In this study, a promising active food-packaging film of Gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol (GEL/PVA) integrated with doubly stabilized clove essential oil chitosome nanoparticles (CNP) was developed to maintain the freshness of marinated steaks. Results from the XRD and SEM experiments indicated excellent compatibility between the CNP and GEL/PVA matrix. Additionally, CNP was found to introduce more free hydroxyl groups, enhance the water retention and surface wettability of the CNP-GEL/PVA (C-G/P) film, and significantly reduce the swelling index from 963.78% to 495.11% (p < 0.05). Notably, the highest tensile strength and elongation at break (53.745 MPa and 46.536%, respectively) were achieved with the addition of 30% (v/v, based on the volume of gelatin) CNP; UVC was fully absorbed with 40% CNP; and films containing 60% CNP showed optimal inhibition of both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coil, extending the shelf life of marinated steak from 3 to 7 days.

Abstract
Peanut shells (PSs) generated from agricultural waste contain valuable compounds with bioactive properties such as anti-aging, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, making it desirable to recycle them as a sustainable resource. The aim of this study is to design an effective luteolin recovery process as the first step of an integrated biorefinery utilizing PSs as raw material. The major extraction variables and their ranges for luteolin recovery from PSs were determined (0-60 °C, 1-5 h, 0-100% MeOH concentration) and a predictive model was derived through a response surface methodology (RSM). Based on the predictive model, the equation determined for the maximal extraction of luteolin at 1 h was as follows: y = -1.8475x + 159.57, and the significant range of variables was as follows: 33.8 °C ≤ temperature (x) ≤ 48.5 °C and 70.0% ≤ MeOH concentration (y) ≤ 97.5%, respectively. High antioxidant and elastase inhibitory activities of PS extracts were confirmed, and these results support their potential to be used as functional materials. In addition, 39.2% of the solid residue after extraction was carbohydrate, which has potential as a carbon source for fermentation. This study provides a useful direction on an integrated biorefinery approach for sustainable agricultural waste valorization.

Abstract
Thermoplastic biofilms were developed from achira starch, chitosan and nanoclays using the solvent-casting method. To obtain the filmogenic solutions, different sonication times (0, 10, 20 and 30 min) were considered in order to evaluate the incidence of this parameter on the chemical and physico-mechanical properties of the bionanocomposite films. The chemical analysis using FTIR spectroscopy showed strong intermolecular interactions between the components with increasing sonication times. The results for tensile strength and elongation were satisfactory for films with 20 min of sonication with increases of 154% and 161%, respectively. Morphological analysis showed greater homogeneity, while thermal analysis showed that sonication favoured the plasticization process and thus, the production of homogeneous materials. The water absorption and wettability tests showed less hydrophilic materials allowing these new materials to be considered for use as coatings or packaging for the food sector.

Abstract
Peanut shell is an agricultural byproduct being wasted on a large scale, which is in urgent need to be recycled. To fully utilize its pharmacological ingredients, e.g. luteolin, eriodyctiol, and 5,7-dihydroxychromone, we evaluated the curative effect of ethanol extract deriving from peanut shell (PSE) in treating chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depressive mice. The chronic stress lasted for 10 weeks, and PSE at 100-900 mg/kg/day was gavaged to mice in the last 2 weeks of modeling. The depressive behaviors were assessed by analyses of sucrose preference, tail suspension, and forced swimming. The brain injury was demonstrated by Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E), Nissl body, and TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) stainings in the mouse hippocampus. Biochemical indicators were analyzed, including levels of neurotrophic factors, neurotransmitters, stress hormones, and inflammatory mediators. The feces were collected for the 16S rDNA sequencing of gut microbiome. Administration of PSE improved the sucrose water consumption of depressive mice, while it decreased the immobile time in tail suspension and forced swimming tests. Meanwhile, the anti-depressive effect of PSE was supported by ameliorated histochemical staining, increased levels of neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitters, as well as down-regulated stress hormones. Furthermore, the treatment of PSE was able to mitigate the levels of inflammatory cytokines in brain, serum, and small intestine. Besides, the tight junction proteins, e.g., occludin and ZO-1, of gut showed elevated expressions, which coincided with the elevated abundance and diversity of gut microbiota upon PSE treatment. This study validated the therapeutic efficacy of PSE in fighting against depression, as well as its modulatory action on inflammation and gut microbiota, which promoted the recycling of this agricultural waste to be health supplements of added value.

Abstract
The widely use of petroleum-based plastics causes serious environmental pollution and oil resource shortage. In this work, biodegradable films were prepared based on gallic acid (GA)-induced Chinese yam starch (YS) and chitosan (CS). The fresh-keeping effect of biodegradable films on the pork meat preservation were investigated. The prepared GA/YS/CS biodegradable films exhibited thinner thickness and better light transmittance, because CS effectively decreased the viscosity of film-forming solution and weaken its internal link structure. The SEM results and mechanical results revealed that the YS, GA, and CS had a good compatibility, GA modification and adding CS markedly improved the tensile strength of YS-based film, because the interaction between CS and starch molecular was facilitate owing to the NH3+ of CS tended to form hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl group of starch. Sensory analysis results suggested that GA/YS/CS films can effectively improve the quality of pork during storage compared to the package of polyethylene film. In summary, the prepared GA/YS/CS film in this work had practical application potential in pork preservation due to its excellent mechanical, antibacterial, oxidation resistance properties, and the development and application of biodegradable starch film can greatly reduce the increasingly serious environmental pollution pressure.

Abstract
Research on the utilization of food waste and by-products, such as peels, pomace, and seeds has increased in recent years. The high number of valuable compounds, such as starch, protein, and bioactive materials in waste and by-products from food manufacturing industries creates opportunities for the food packaging industry. These opportunities include the development of biodegradable plastics, functional compounds, active and intelligent packaging materials. However, the practicality, adaptability and relevance of up-scaling this lab-based research into an industrial scale are yet to be thoroughly examined. Therefore, in this review, recent research on the development of active and intelligent packaging materials, their applications on seafood and meat products, consumer acceptance, and recommendations to improve commercialization of these products were critically overviewed. This work addresses the challenges and potential in commercializing food waste and by-products for the food packaging industry. This information could be used as a guide for research on reducing food loss and waste while satisfying industrial demands.

Abstract
The concept of this study is the replacement of previous fossil-based techniques for food packaging and food shelf-life extension, with novel more green processes and materials following the spirit of circular economy and the global trend for environmentally positive fingerprints. A novel adsorption process to produce thymol-halloysite nanohybrids is presented in this work. The high dispersion of this thymol-halloysite nanostructure in chitosan biopolymer is one of the goals of this study. The incorporation of this biodegradable matrix with poly-vinyl-alcohol produced a very promising food-packaging film. Mechanical, water-oxygen barrier, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties were measured. Transparency levels were also tested using a UV-vis instrument. Moreover, the developed films were tested in-vivo for the preservation and the extension of the shelf-life of kiwi fruits. In all cases, results indicated that the increased fraction of thymol from thyme oil significantly enhances the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the prepared chitosan-poly-vinyl- alcohol gel. The use of the halloysite increases the mechanical and water-oxygen barrier properties and leads to a control release process of thymol which extends the preservation and the shelf-life of kiwi fruits. Finally, the results indicated that the halloysite improves the properties of the chitosan/poly-vinyl-alcohol films, and the thymol makes them further advantageous.

Abstract
Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) shell, an abundant by-product of peanut production, contains a complex combination of organic compounds, including flavonoids. Changes in the total phenolic content, flavonoid content, antioxidant capacities, and skin aging-related enzyme (tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase)-inhibitory activities of peanut shell were investigated after treatment in pressure swing reactors under controlled gas conditions using surface dielectric barrier discharge with different plasma (NOx and O3) and temperature (25 and 150 °C) treatments. Plasma treatment under ozone-rich conditions at 150 °C significantly affected the total phenolic (270.70 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g) and flavonoid (120.02 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g) contents of peanut shell compared with the control (253.94 and 117.74 mg CE/g, respectively) (p < 0.05). In addition, with the same treatment, an increase in functional compound content clearly enhanced the antioxidant activities of components in peanut shell extracts. However, the NOx-rich treatment was significantly less effective than the O3 treatment (p < 0.05) in terms of the total phenolic content, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activities. Similarly, peanut shells treated in the reactor under O3-rich plasma conditions at 150 ℃ had higher tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase inhibition rates (55.72%, 85.69%, and 86.43%, respectively) compared to the control (35.81%, 80.78%, and 83.53%, respectively). Our findings revealed that a reactor operated with O3-rich plasma-activated gas at 150 °C was better-suited for producing functional industrial materials from the by-products of peanuts.

Abstract
Chitosan (CTS)/corn starch (CSH)/nano-TiO2/graphene (Gr) antibacterial active packaging films were prepared by ultrasonic-assisted electrospray deposition and solution-casting methods, and the effects of the TiO2:Gr mass ratio and ultrasonication power on their morphology and mechanical, optical, thermal, barrier, and antibacterial properties were investigated. The film fabricated at a TiO2:Gr ratio of 6:4 and an ultrasonication power of 160 W exhibited a uniform distribution of the nanofillers in the CTS/CSH matrix and significantly enhanced the mechanical, barrier, and water-resistance properties. Furthermore, this film demonstrated superior ultraviolet and visible light-shielding characteristics as compared with those of the non-filled CTS/CSH film, while its Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus inhibition efficiencies were equal to 96.67 ± 0.09% and 99.85 ± 0.13%, respectively. Therefore, the film can effectively prevent food spoilage, indicating its potential for food-packaging applications.

Abstract
Peanut shells are an agricultural by-product rich in flavonoids, but their utilization is not high at present. This research developed a method for the rational utilization of flavonoids in peanut shells, which could enhance the comprehensive utilization of peanut resources. A green and efficient natural extraction technique based on a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) and alkaline destruction was exploited for the extraction of the flavonoids from peanut shells. NADES synthesized with DL-menthol (Me) and DL-lactic acid (LA) was selected as the solvent. KOH was used as a destructive agent that could destroy the structure of Me/LA, which could aid not only recovering the flavonoids, but also aid Me recovery and recycling. The NADES with the molar ratio of Me to LA of 1 : 4 showed a higher extraction capacity for flavonoids and better maintenance of antioxidant activity than water and ethanol. The maximum extraction efficiency was 23.33 mg rutin equivalents per g. In addition, the mass-transfer kinetics model of flavonoids extraction was established using Fick's second law, which well fitted the experimental results and proved that the temperature had a significant effect on the extraction efficiency. These results offered some insights for the research and exploitation of an environmentally friendly method to extract bio-active flavonoids for future applications in actual industrial manufacturing.

Abstract
Thehighly efficient utilization of lignin is of great importance for the development of the biorefinery industry. Herein, a novel "core-shell" lignin nanoparticle (LNP) with a diameter of around 135 nm was prepared, after the lignin was isolated from the effluent of formic acid fractionation via dialysis. In an attempt to endow composite materials with vital functionalities, the LNP was added to the starch film and the starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or starch/polyethylene oxide (PEO) composite film. The results showed that the hydrophobicity performance of the synthesized films was enhanced significantly. Specifically, the dynamic water contact angle value of the starch/PVA composite film with 1% (wt) addition of LNPs could be maintained as high as 122° for 180 s; the starch/PEO composite film also achieved an excellent water contact angle above 120°. The addition of LNPs promoted the formation of some rough structures on the film surface, as shown by the scanning electron microscopy images, which could repel the water molecules efficiently and are closely related to the enhanced hydrophobicity of the starch film. What is more, the as-prepared LNP conferred strengthened thermal stability and ultraviolet blocking properties on the starch composite film. The structural combination of the polymer film with LNPs holds the promise for providing advanced functionalities to the composite material with wide applications.

Abstract
Starch is a biopolymer with enormous potential for generating new biodegradable packages due to its easy availability and low cost. However, due to its weak functional properties, limitation of its interaction with some hydroxyl groups and evaluation of blends with other polymers are necessary in order to improve its performance. Glycerol-plasticized acetylated corn starch films were developed using the casting method, and the impact of incorporating chitosan (TPS:CH) in various proportions (75:25, 50:50, and 25:75 v/v) was studied in the present research. The effect of chitosan ratios on the physical, mechanical, water-vapor barrier, and thermal properties of the film was studied. Chitosan-protonated amino groups promoted the formation of intermolecular bonds, improving tensile strength, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, water adsorption capacity, and the gas barrier of starch films. The results show that the film composed of TPS25-CH75 proved to be the best barrier to water vapor; thus, these composite films are excellent choices for developing biodegradable packaging for the food industry.

Abstract
This work aimed to prepare ulluco starch (US)/chitosan (Ch) edible films and evaluate the effect of the concentration of US on their physicochemical properties. The use of edible films is a means of adding value to the ulluco crop and evaluating the viability of using new sources to produce packaging materials. Different samples were prepared at different US concentrations (2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% w/v) and a fixed chitosan concentration (1.5% w/v); then, samples were analyzed, considering their physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. The US/Ch edible films showed an increase in solubility from 17.5% to 21.7%, swelling power (SP) from 38.9% to 267%, tensile strength (TS) from 3.69 MPa to 10.7 MPa, Young modulus (YM) from 18.0 Pa to 652 Pa, and thermal stability as the US concentration increased. However, samples with low US concentrations showed higher elongation at break (EB) (36.6%) and better barrier properties (WVP) (5.61 × 10−11 g/m s Pa). The films evaluated in this work presented good physical, mechanical, and barrier properties, revealing their potential as packaging material ensuring food security, and demonstrating the technological potential of US.

Abstract
Biografting is a promising and ecofriendly approach to meet various application requirements of products. Herein, a popular green enzyme, laccase, was adopted to graft a hydrophobic phenolic compound (lauryl gallate, LG) onto chitosan (CTS). The resultant chitosan derivate (Lac/LG-CTS) was systematically analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), grafting efficiency, scanning probe microscopy (SPM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). This grafting technique produced a multifunctional chitosan copolymer with remarkably enhanced antioxidant property, hydrophobicity, and moisture barrier property. Furthermore, the swelling capacity and acid solubility of the copolymer film decreased significantly, although the tensile strength and elongation were slightly weakened as compared to those of native chitosan. These results suggest that the Lac/LG-CTS holds great potential as a food-packaging material, preservative agent, or edible coating material.

The effects of PPEs concentration (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) on the antioxidant capacity, optical, thermal, mechanical, barrier properties, and changes in PVOH-starch molecular structure of PVOH/ST films were investigated. The results revealed that with the increasing concertation of PPEs, prepared films' thickness and water vapor permeability slightly increased. Elongation at break of PVOH/ST films was also enhanced with PPEs concentration. All PPEs incorporated films exhibited enhanced thermal stability as the degradation occurred above 300 °C. The addition of PPE to PVOH/ST films remarkably increased the antioxidant properties. Finally, prepared PVOH/ST/PPE films demonstrated to be a capable material for developing active biodegradable packaging material due to its proven antioxidant activity and mechanical property, which can be helpful in the packaging of food products that gets spoiled due to oxidation reactions.

Abstract
Biodegradable packaging prepared from starch is an alternative to fossil-based plastic packaging. However, the properties of starch packaging do not comply with the necessary physicochemical properties to preserve food. Hence, in a previous study, we reported the preparation of a composite polymer material based on starch-chitosan-pluronic F127 that was found to be an adequate alternative packaging material. In this study, we modified the physicochemical properties of this material by storing it for 16 months under ambient conditions. The results indicate that the incorporation of pluronic F127 in the blend polymer can help avoid the retrogradation of starch. Moreover, at higher concentrations of pluronic F127, wettability is reduced. Finally, after storage, the materials exhibited surface modification, which is related to a color change and an increase in solubility, as well as a slight increase in stiffness.

Abstract
Active food packaging films based on chitosan and enriched with Artemisia campestris hydroalcoholic extract (ACHE), aqueous extract (ACAE) and essential oil (ACEO) were developed. The effects of incorporating A. campestris were investigated on the physical, mechanical, thermal and antioxidant characteristics of the films. The structural properties of the films were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that adding ACHE and ACEO improved the water resistance of chitosan films. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis revealed covalent interaction and hydrogen bonding between chitosan and ACHE. The XRD and SEM analyses indicated that interactions occurred between the film matrix and A. campestris active compounds, which could be reflected by the physical and mechanical properties of composite films. Incorporating ACHE and ACAE in the chitosan matrix decreased the tensile strength. The film extensibility was reduced when ACHE and ACEO were added. All films exhibited great thermal stability as the degradation occurred above 300 °C. The addition of A. campestris active compounds, particularly extracts, to chitosan films notably increased the antioxidant and UV-Vis barrier properties. Chitosan films enriched with the A. campestris antioxidant compounds could be applied as food packaging alternatives.

Abstract
Peanut skins are a waste product of the peanut processing industry with little commercial value. They are also significant sources of the polyphenolic compounds that are noted for their bioactivity. The extraction procedures for these compounds range from simple single solvent extracts to sophisticated separation schemes to isolate and identify the large range of compounds present. To take advantage of the bioactivities attributed to the polyphenols present, a range of products both edible and nonedible containing peanut skin extracts have been developed. This review presents the range of studies to date that are dedicated to extracting these compounds from peanut skins and their various applications.

Abstract
From an economic point of view, the spoilage of food products during processing and distribution has a negative impact on the food industry. Lipid oxidation and deterioration caused by the growth of microorganisms are the main problems during storage of food products. In order to reduce losses and extend the shelf-life of food products, the food industry has designed active packaging as an alternative to the traditional type. In the review, the benefits of active packaging materials containing biopolymers (polysaccharides and/or proteins) and active compounds (plant extracts, essential oils, nanofillers, etc.) are highlighted. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of this type of film has also been highlighted. In addition, the impact of active packaging on the quality and durability of food products during storage has been described.
