Significant Increase in the Dipole Moment of Graphene on Functionalization: DFT Calculations and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The limited solubility of graphene in water can be attributed to the existence of π-π bonds connecting its layers. Functionalized graphene or graphene oxide (GO) is frequently produced in order to overcome the shortcomings of graphene. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculation, functionalized graphene with various combinations of hydroxyl, epoxy, and carboxylic functional groups were investigated computationally. The study focused on the effects of functional group combinations on the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies, giving information about the chemical reactivity and stability of the molecules under investigation. Global chemical reactivity descriptors, including chemical hardness, softness, electronegativity, chemical potential, and electrophilicity index, were calculated to further elucidate the overall stability and reactivity of the molecules. The results demonstrated that the introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups on graphene significantly influenced its electronic properties, leading to variations in the chemical reactivity and stability. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps highlighted the susceptibility of specific regions to electrophilic and nucleophilic attacks. The flexibility and stability of functionalized graphene through root mean square fluctuation (RMSF) and root mean square deviation (RMSD) analyses indicate the stability of functionalized graphene in water. This comprehensive computational investigation provides valuable insights into the design and understanding of functionalized graphene for potential applications in drug delivery.

Bioanalytical strategies to evaluate cisplatin nanodelivery systems: From synthesis to incorporation in individual cells and biological response

Cisplatin metallodrugs have been widely used in the treatment of multiple cancers over the last years. Nevertheless, its limited effectiveness, development of acquired drug resistances, and toxic effects decrease nowadays their application in clinical settings. Aiming at improving their features, investigations have been oriented towards the coupling of cisplatin to nanocarriers, like liposomes or inorganic nanoparticles. Moreover, these systems can be further developed to allow targeted co-delivery of drugs. In this review, we describe the major nanosystems and the optimal analytical strategies for their assessment. Finally, we describe the main biological effects of these metallodrug conjugates and the available approaches for their study.

Metal/metal oxide-carbohydrate polymers framework for industrial and biological applications: Current advancements and future directions

Recently, the development and consumption of metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites (M/MOCPNs) are withdrawing significant attention because of their numerous salient features. Metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites are being used as environmentally friendly alternatives for traditional metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites exhibit variable properties that make them excellent prospects for a variety of biological and industrial uses. In metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites, carbohydrate polymers bind with metallic atoms and ions using coordination bonding in which heteroatoms of polar functional groups behave as adsorption centers. Metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites are widely used in woundhealing, additional biological uses and drug delivery, heavy ions removal or metal decontamination, and dye removal. The present review article features the collection of some major biological and industrial applications of metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites. The binding affinity of carbohydrate polymers with metal atoms and ions in metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites has also been described.

Development of chitosan-graphene oxide blend nanoparticles for controlled flurbiprofen delivery

The use of natural polymeric nanoparticles (Nps) as drug carriers is a highly promising area of research in the field of drug delivery systems because of their high efficiency. In this study, flurbiprofen (FB) loaded chitosan-graphene oxide (CS-GO) blend Nps were synthesized as a controlled delivery system using the emulsion method. The crystalline, molecular, and morphological structures of the prepared CS-GO Nps were characterized using a variety of analytical methods, including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-Ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the introduction of GO into the CS nanoparticle formulation increased its thermal stability. The range of the average particle size was between 362 ± 5.06 and 718 ± 2.21 nm, with negative zeta potential values between -7.67 ± 4.16 and - 27.93 ± 2.26 mV. The effects of the CS/GO ratio, the FB/polymer ratio, the amount of span 80, and the cross-linker concentration were assessed on FB release profiles. In vitro release studies displayed a two-stage release behaviour with a fast initial release of the FB, followed by sustained and extended release, and the incorporation of GO into the CS Nps made the FB release more sustained and controlled manner. Besides, the cytotoxicity test of the FB-loaded CS-GO Nps was studied through MTT assay, and it was found that they were biocompatible. Based on these findings, it can be inferred that the prepared CS-GO Nps might be a promising candidate drug carrier system for FB.

Natural Polymeric Nanobiocomposites for Anti-Cancer Drug Delivery Therapeutics: A Recent Update

Cancer is one of the most common lethal diseases and the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Effective cancer treatment is a global problem, and subsequent advancements in nanomedicine are useful as substitute management for anti-cancer agents. Nanotechnology, which is gaining popularity, enables fast-expanding delivery methods in science for curing diseases in a site-specific approach, utilizing natural bioactive substances because several studies have established that natural plant-based bioactive compounds can improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Bioactive, in combination with nanotechnology, is an exceptionally alluring and recent development in the fight against cancer. Along with their nutritional advantages, natural bioactive chemicals may be used as chemotherapeutic medications to manage cancer. Alginate, starch, xanthan gum, pectin, guar gum, hyaluronic acid, gelatin, albumin, collagen, cellulose, chitosan, and other biopolymers have been employed successfully in the delivery of medicinal products to particular sites. Due to their biodegradability, natural polymeric nanobiocomposites have garnered much interest in developing novel anti-cancer drug delivery methods. There are several techniques to create biopolymer-based nanoparticle systems. However, these systems must be created in an affordable and environmentally sustainable way to be more readily available, selective, and less hazardous to increase treatment effectiveness. Thus, an extensive comprehension of the various facets and recent developments in natural polymeric nanobiocomposites utilized to deliver anti-cancer drugs is imperative. The present article provides an overview of the latest research and developments in natural polymeric nanobiocomposites, particularly emphasizing their applications in the controlled and targeted delivery of anti-cancer drugs.

Graphene as Nanocarrier for Gold(I)-Monocarbene Complexes: Strength and Nature of Physisorption

Gold(I) metal complexes are finding increasing applications as therapeutic agents against a variety of diseases. As their potential use as effective metallodrugs is continuously confirmed, the issue of their administration, distribution and delivery to desired biological targets emerges. Graphene and its derivatives possess attractive properties in terms of high affinity and low toxicity, suggesting that they can efficaciously be used as drug nanocarriers. In the present study, we computationally address the adsorption of a gold(I) N-heterocyclic monocarbene, namely, IMeAuCl (where IMe = 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene), on graphene. The Au(I) N-heterocyclic carbene family has indeed shown promising anticancer activity and the N-heterocyclic ring could easily interact with planar graphene nanostructures. By means of high-level electronic structure approaches, we investigated the strength and nature of the involved interaction using small graphene prototypes, which allow us to benchmark the best-performing DFT functionals as well as assess the role of the different contributions to total interaction energies. Moreover, realistic adsorption enthalpies and free energy values are obtained by exploiting the optimal DFT method to describe the drug adsorption on larger graphene models. Such values (ΔH_ads = -18.4 kcal/mol and ΔG_ads= -7.20 kcal/mol for the largest C₁₅₀H₃₀ model) indicate a very favorable adsorption, mainly arising from the dispersion component of the interaction, with the electrostatic attraction also playing a non-negligible role.

Gum Acacia attenuates cisplatin toxic effect spermatogenesis dysfunction and infertility in rats

This study aimed to investigate the potential benefits Gum Arabic/Acacia Senegal (GA) in mitigating the harmful effects of cisplatin (CP) on spermatogenesis and testicular health in male adult rats. A total of forty albino rats were used in the study and divided into four groups; control, GA, CP, and Co-treated group, which received both CP and GA concurrently. The results revealed that CP caused a significant increase in oxidative stress and a decrease in antioxidant levels (CAT, SOD, and GSH), which disturbed the testicular machinery. This caused significant histological and ultrastructural damage to the testicular structure, including atrophied seminiferous tubules with severely reduced germinal epithelium. Additionally, CP caused a decrease in reproductive hormones (testosterone and LH), a decline in nucleic proliferation PCNA immunoexpression, and an increase in cytoplasmic apoptotic Caspase-3 protein expression in testicular tissue, when compared to the control and GA groups. Moreover, The CP treatment impaired spermatogenesis and decreased sperm number and motility with abnormal morphology. However, co-administration of GA with CP mitigated the dysfunction in spermatogenesis and reversed testicular damage caused by CP through significantly (P < 0.01) reducing oxidative stress (MDA) and increasing the activities of CAT, SOD, and GSH. Additionally, co-administration of GA elevated the levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone in blood sera, significantly (P < 0.01) improved the histometric measurements of seminiferous tubules diameter, their epithelial height, Johnsen's score of spermatogenesis, 4-level histological grading scale Cosentino's score, immunohistochemical expression of nucleic PCNA, and cytoplasmic Caspase-3 proteins. Furthermore, TEM examination confirmed the synergistic effect of GA in restoring the germinal epithelial cells ultrastructure, the elongated and transverse sections of spermatozoa in the lumen, and the interstitial tissue. All of these effects resulted in a significant improvement in sperm quality in the Co-treated animals compared with the CP group, as well as, a significant decline in the morphological abnormalities of sperm in Co-treated rats compared to those in the CP group. GA is a valuable agent for ameliorating chemotherapy-related infertility.

Graphene oxide nanoarchitectures in cancer biology: Nano-modulators of autophagy and apoptosis

Nanotechnology is a growing field, with many potential biomedical applications of nanomedicine for the treatment of different diseases, particularly cancer, on the horizon. Graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles can act as carbon-based nanocarriers with advantages such as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, and the capacity for surface modification. These nanostructures have been extensively used in cancer therapy for drug and gene delivery, photothermal therapy, overcoming chemotherapy resistance, and for imaging procedures. In the current review, we focus on the biological functions of GO nanoparticles as regulators of apoptosis and autophagy, the two major forms of programmed cell death. GO nanoparticles can either induce or inhibit autophagy in cancer cells, depending on the conditions. By stimulating autophagy, GO nanocarriers can promote the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy. However, by impairing autophagy flux, GO nanoparticles can reduce cell survival and enhance inflammation. Similarly, GO nanomaterials can increase ROS production and induce DNA damage, thereby sensitizing cancer cells to apoptosis. In vitro and in vivo experiments have investigated whether GO nanomaterials show any toxicity in major body organs, such as the brain, liver, spleen, and heart. Molecular pathways, such as ATG, MAPK, JNK, and Akt, can be regulated by GO nanomaterials, leading to effects on autophagy and apoptosis. These topics are discussed in this review to shed some lights towards the biomedical potential of GO nanoparticles and their biocompatibility, paving the way for their future application in clinical trials.

On the possibility of using the Ti@Si16 superatom as a novel drug delivery carrier for different drugs: A DFT study

The potential application of an experimentally synthesized superatom Ti@Si₁₆ as a novel drug carrier for cisplatin (DDP), isoniazid (INH), acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu), and favipiravir (FPV) has been explored by density functional theory. It is observed that the Pt atom of DDP can be effectively absorbed on Ti@Si₁₆ via a "donation-back donation" electron transfer mechanism, resulting in a moderate adsorption energy of -19.95 kcal/mol for DDP@[Ti@Si₁₆]. As for INH, it prefers to combine with Ti@Si₁₆ via the N atom of pyridine ring by forming a strongly polar N-Si bond. Differently, the interaction between Ti@Si₁₆ and the ASA, 5-Fu, and FPV drugs is dominated by the Van der Waals interaction. Our results reveal that DDP@[Ti@Si₁₆] possesses a moderate recovery time under body temperature, which benefits the desorption of DDP from Ti@Si₁₆. More importantly, the release of DDP drug from the Ti@Si₁₆ surface can be effectively controlled by exerting small orientation external electric fields on the DDP@[Ti@Si₁₆] complex. Therefore, this study demonstrates that Ti@Si₁₆ can serve as a promising drug carrier for DDP, and thus will further expand its practical applications in the biomedical field.

Composite Nanoarchitectonics of Magnetic Silicon Dioxide-Modified Chitosan for Doxorubicin Delivery and In Vitro Cytotoxicity Assay

Developing drug delivery carriers for highly selective, controlled, and sustained release of the anti-cancer drugs is one of the crucial issues in the cancer strive. We herein report the synthesis of Fe3O4 (M) and SiO2 (S) nanoparticles and their nanocomposites with chitosan (CS) for high loading efficiency and subsequent release potentiality of Doxorubicin (DOX) anticancer drug. The as-synthesized nanostructures were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and thermal analysis techniques. The average crystallite sizes of the as-prepared M, S, CS/M, CS/S, and CS/M/S nanostructures were found to be 5, 15, 70, 22, and 29 nm, respectively. The loading and cumulative release of Doxorubicin for the produced nanostructures were examined, and the results exhibited loading efficacy of 71%, 95%, 96%, 79%, 17%, and 42% for M, S, CS, CS/M, CS/S, and CS/M/S nanostructures, respectively. The Doxorubicin releasing results revealed a promising cumulative release percentages at pH 4.2 and pH 5 compared with those at pH 7.4. At pH 4.2, the cumulative release percentages for DOX-M, DOX-S, DOX-CS, DOX/M, and DOX/CS/M/S were 94%, 96%, 92%, 95%, and 98%, respectively. While the corresponding percentages at pH 5 were 97%, 90%, 46%, 43%, and 70%. The percentage for DOX-CS/S was 60% at pH 5, though. The in-vitro cytotoxicity of M-DOX, CS-DOX, and M/CS-DOX was explored against two human cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and Hep-G2) using SRB (Sulforhodamine B) assay. The DOX-loaded M/CS exhibited the highest cytotoxicity and its IC50 values were 2.65 and 2.25 μg/mL against Hep-G2 and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively, compared to the corresponding values of 5.1 and 4.5 μg/mL for free DOX. The results indicated that M/CS nanocomposite is a good candidate as drug delivery nano-carrier for the Doxorubicin anti-cancer drug.

Application of DFT Calculations in Designing Polymer-Based Drug Delivery Systems: An Overview

Drug delivery systems transfer medications to target locations throughout the body. These systems are often made up of biodegradable and bioabsorbable polymers acting as delivery components. The introduction of density functional theory (DFT) has tremendously aided the application of computational material science in the design and development of drug delivery materials. The use of DFT and other computational approaches avoids time-consuming empirical processes. Therefore, this review explored how the DFT computation may be utilized to explain some of the features of polymer-based drug delivery systems. First, we went through the key aspects of DFT and provided some context. Then we looked at the essential characteristics of a polymer-based drug delivery system that DFT simulations could predict. We observed that the Gaussian software had been extensively employed by researchers, particularly with the B3LYP functional and 6-31G(d, p) basic sets for polymer-based drug delivery systems. However, to give researchers a choice of basis set for modelling complicated organic systems, such as polymer–drug complexes, we then offered possible resources and presented the future trend.

A novel solar-powered electrochemical mineralization system for persistent remediation of uranium-contaminated groundwater

Reduction of the migratory ability of uranium via reduction, co-precipitation or immobilization is a widely used technology for remediation of uranium contaminated groundwater (UCG). However, the re-released uranium due to environmental alterations such as oxidation, acid dissolution, or microbial decomposition limits the long-term effect of UCG remediation. Here, we developed a novel solar-powered electrochemical mineralization (SPEM) system for persistent remediation of UCG under laboratory conditions. The SPEM system incorporates uranium into magnetite crystal to achieve long-term stability of uranium. The effects of photoelectric conversion, subsurface void fraction, groundwater seepage velocity, and electrode configuration on uranium removal were systematically analyzed. The results showed that the remediation system had excellent adaptability to complex water quality and geological conditions, and could remediate large-area contamination. After 12 h of persistent treatment, the system with newly hexagonal two-dimensional electrode configuration (1A6C) reduced uranium concentration by more than 85% in simulated subsurface environment. The mineralized uranium was not re-released within continuous rinsing of treated regions using an acid solution (pH = 3.0), for 370 h. The developed method solely requires metallic iron as a raw material, which has high and long-term efficiency, is eco-friendly, simple, and widely applicable, thus reliable for the remediation of deep UCG.

Multifunctional graphene oxide nanoparticles for drug delivery in cancer

Recent advancements in nanotechnology have enabled us to develop sophisticated multifunctional nanoparticles or nanosystems for targeted diagnosis and treatment of several illnesses, including cancers. To effectively treat any solid tumor, the therapy should preferably target just the malignant cells/tissue with minor damage to normal cells/tissues. Graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles have gained considerable interest owing to their two-dimensional planar structure, chemical/mechanical stability, excellent photosensitivity, superb conductivity, high surface area, and good biocompatibility in cancer therapy. Many compounds have been functionalized on the surface of GO to increase their biological applications and minimize cytotoxicity. The review presents an overview of the physicochemical characteristics, strategies for various modifications, toxicity and biocompatibility of graphene and graphene oxide, current trends in developing GO-based nano constructs as a drug delivery cargo and other biological applications, including chemo-photothermal therapy, chemo-photodynamic therapy, bioimaging, and theragnosis in cancer. Further, the review discusses the challenges and opportunities of GO, GO-based nanomaterials for the said applications. Overall, the review focuses on the therapeutic potential of strategically developed GO nanomedicines and comprehensively discusses their opportunities and challenges in cancer therapy.

Cubically cage-shaped mesoporous ordered silica for simultaneous visual detection and removal of uranium ions from contaminated seawater

A dual-function organic-inorganic mesoporous structure is reported for naked-eye detection and removal of uranyl ions from an aqueous environment. The mesoporous sensor/adsorbent is fabricated via direct template synthesis of highly ordered silica monolith (HOM) starting from a quaternary microemulsion liquid crystalline phase. The produced HOM is subjected to further modifications through growing an organic probe, omega chrome black blue G (OCBBG), in the cavities and on the outer surface of the silica structure. The spectral response for [HOM-OCBBG → U(VI)] complex shows a maximum reflectance at λ_max = 548 nm within 1 min response time (t_R); the LOD is close to 9.1 μg/L while the LOQ approaches 30.4 μg/L, and this corresponds to the range of concentration where the signal is linear against U(VI) concentration (i.e., 5-1000 μg/L) at pH 3.4 with standard deviation (SD) of 0.079 (RSD% = 11.7 at n = 10). Experiments and DFT calculations indicate the existence of strong binding energy between the organic probe and uranyl ions forming a complex with blue color that can be detected by naked eyes even at low uranium concentrations. With regard to the radioactive remediation, the new mesoporous sensor/captor is able to reach a maximum capacity of 95 mg/g within a few minutes of the sorption process. The synthesized material can be regenerated using simple leaching and re-used several times without a significant decrease in capacity.

Nano-hydroxyapatite as a delivery system: overview and advancements

Nano-hydroxyapatite is being investigated as vital components of implants and dental and tissue engineering devices. It is found as a bone replacement due to its non-toxicity and cytocompatibility with dental tissues and bone. The reality that nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite can be made of porous granules and scaffolds. Additionally, it has a massive loading potential indicating its use as a transporter for drugs or a regulated drug release mechanism in pharmaceutical research. This review aims to present existing nano-hydroxyapatite research developments as a drug carrier employed in bone tissue disorders locally and deliver poorly soluble drugs with reduced bioavailability. We have discussed the nano-hydroxyapatite role in the delivery of drugs (i.e. anti-resorptive, anti-cancer, and antibiotics), proteins, genetic material, and radionuclides.

A Review on the Production Methods and Applications of Graphene-Based Materials

Graphene-based materials in the form of fibres, fabrics, films, and composite materials are the most widely investigated research domains because of their remarkable physicochemical and thermomechanical properties. In this era of scientific advancement, graphene has built the foundation of a new horizon of possibilities and received tremendous research focus in several application areas such as aerospace, energy, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, wastewater management, and wearable technology. Although graphene has been found to provide exceptional results in every application field, a massive proportion of research is still underway to configure required parameters to ensure the best possible outcomes from graphene-based materials. Until now, several review articles have been published to summarise the excellence of graphene and its derivatives, which focused mainly on a single application area of graphene. However, no single review is found to comprehensively study most used fabrication processes of graphene-based materials including their diversified and potential application areas. To address this genuine gap and ensure wider support for the upcoming research and investigations of this excellent material, this review aims to provide a snapshot of most used fabrication methods of graphene-based materials in the form of pure and composite fibres, graphene-based composite materials conjugated with polymers, and fibres. This study also provides a clear perspective of large-scale production feasibility and application areas of graphene-based materials in all forms.

Advances in Drug Delivery Nanosystems Using Graphene-Based Materials and Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. In addition to the well-known crystallographic modifications such as graphite and diamond, other allotropic carbon modifications such as graphene-based nanomaterials and carbon nanotubes have recently come to the fore. These carbon nanomaterials can be designed to help deliver or target drugs more efficiently and to innovate therapeutic approaches, especially for cancer treatment, but also for the development of new diagnostic agents for malignancies and are expected to help combine molecular imaging for diagnosis with therapies. This paper summarizes the latest designed drug delivery nanosystems based on graphene, graphene quantum dots, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes, mainly for anticancer therapy.

Low molecular weight chitosan-cyanocobalamin nanoparticles for controlled delivery of ciprofloxacin: Preparation and evaluation

This study was carried out to project a safe nano-drug carrier composed of chitosan and cyanocobalamin (CNCbl) to improve oral delivery of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP). CIP is classified in class IV of the biopharmaceutical classification system with low solubility and permeabilityA, so it has some problems if given orally. Novel conjugate of low molecular weight chitosan, as a natural biopolymer, and CNCbl was synthesized, and then drug loading and in-vitro drug release were assessed. The loading of CIP was optimized by the Design-Expert software and the central composite design method, and that the optimal drug loading efficiency (57%) was obtained via analysis of variance (ANOVA). In-vitro drug release studies showed controlled release patterns in two various conditions, namely phosphate buffer saline (pH = 7.4) and 0.1 N HCl. Functionalized nano-drug-loaded carrier showed cytotoxicity as much as that of free drug, particle size less than 100 nm as well as positive zeta potential. Due to the beneficial properties of the chitosan-based drug carrier and the suitable features of the CIP-loaded carrier, this chitosan-based nano-drug delivery system can be regarded as an ideal candidate for oral delivery of the CIP as a drug model.

A Review on Recent Advancements of Graphene and Graphene-Related Materials in Biological Applications

Graphene is the most outstanding material among the new nanostructured carbonaceous species discovered and produced. Graphene’s astonishing properties (i.e., electronic conductivity, mechanical robustness, large surface area) have led to a deep change in the material science field. In this review, after a brief overview of the main characteristics of graphene and related materials, we present an extensive overview of the most recent achievements in biological uses of graphene and related materials.

An applied quantum-chemical model for genipin-crosslinked chitosan (GCS) nanocarrier

The genipin-crosslinked chitosan (GCS) nanocarrier has received a lot of attention due to its unique biological and chemical properties as an effective drug delivery system. GCS was modeled by considering two chitosan (CS) polymer sequences with six monomer units that are crosslinked by genipin. To investigate the characteristics of this model, we considered it as a nanocarrier of the anti-cancer drug cladribine (2CdA). Seven configurations of GCS and 2CdA (GCS/2CdA1-7) were optimized at M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) in aqueous solution. The average binding energy above 100 kJ mol^-1 indicates a high drug loading amount. The high adsorption of the drug on GCS is due to the hydrogen bonds that were investigated by AIM analysis. Hydrogen bonds also allow the drug to be released more slowly. These results were confirmed by experimental evidence and the comparison of this model with the simple model of one polymer chain. Also, the mechanism of GCS formation was investigated by calculating the activation parameters, which indicates that solvent (H₂O) molecules are explicitly involved in the formation of GCS.

Interaction and Reactivity of Cisplatin Physisorbed on Graphene Oxide Nano-Prototypes

The physical adsorption of cisplatin (CP) on graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is investigated at the DFT level of theory by exploiting suitable molecular prototypes representing the most probable adsorbing regions of GO and rGO nano-structures. The results show that the CP binding energy is enhanced with respect to that for the interaction with pristine graphene. This is due to the preferential adsorption of the drug in correspondence of the epoxy and hydroxy groups located on GO basal plane: an energy decomposition analysis of the corresponding binding energy reveals that the most attractive contribution comes from the electrostatic attraction between the -NH3 ends of CP and the oxygen groups on (r)GO, which can be associated with hydrogen bonding effects. Moreover, it is found that the reactivity of the physically adsorbed CP is practically unaltered being the free energy variation of the first hydrolysis reaction almost matching that of its free (unadsorbed drug) counterpart. The reported results suggest that the CP physical adsorption on GO and rGO carriers is overall feasible being an exergonic process in aqueous solution. The CP adsorption could facilitate its solubility and transport in water solutions, exploiting the high hydrophilicity of the peripheral carboxylic groups located on the edge of the GO and rGO nano-structures. Moreover, the the higher affinity of CP with respect to the oxidized sites suggests a possible dependence of drug loading and release on pH conditions, which would highly facilitate its specific delivery.

Glauconite clay-functionalized chitosan nanocomposites for efficient adsorptive removal of fluoride ions from polluted aqueous solutions

We herein have developed a mild approach for the fabrication of glauconite clay (G)-modified chitosan (CS) nanocomposites by the combination of a simple blending and crosslinking method. The chitosan was modified with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), glutaraldehyde (GL), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The as-prepared composites were identified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), nitrogen physical adsorption (BET), atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption activities of the as-prepared materials were assessed for the removal of fluoride ions from aqueous media using a batch technique. Raw glauconite (G), GL-CS/G, SDS-CS/G, EDTA-GL-CS/G, and CTAB-CS/G adsorbents displayed maximum adsorption capacity values of 1.15, 4.31, 4.55, 6.90, and 9.03 mg g⁻¹, respectively. The adsorption results were well described by employing the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The estimated thermodynamic constants indicated that the F⁻ ion adsorption was a spontaneous, physisorption process. Furthermore, the modified chitosan adsorbents are good candidates for the adsorptive elimination of F⁻ ions from aqueous solutions, according to their reusability, high stability, good adsorption capacity, and applicability for actual field water samples.
