Abstract
The incorporation of active compounds into polymeric matrices using traditional methods has several drawbacks mainly due to the high volatility and thermal sensitivity of these substances. A solution to this problem could be the incorporation of bioactive compounds forming inclusion complexes as a strategy to improve the chemical stability, bioactivity and achieve controlled release. In this work, β-cyclodextrin/carvacrol inclusion complex was prepared by spray drying to be incorporated into poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Mater-Bi® films by supercritical CO2 impregnation. The impregnation process was carried out at pressures of 10, 15 and 20 MPa and at 40 °C. Both polymers showed the highest amount of incorporated inclusion complex at 15 MPa, where the percentage of impregnation varied from 0.6 % to 7.1 % in Mater-Bi® and PLA, respectively. Release tests for PLA films impregnated with inclusion complex showed a slow release of the active compound, which did not reach equilibrium after 350 h under the experimental conditions. This prolonged release was not observed in Mater-Bi® due to the lower incorporation of the inclusion complex. The release rate was described herein by a comprehensive phenomenological model considering the decomplexation kinetics combined with the equilibrium and mass transfer expressions.

Abstract
Sustainable poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) films incorporating lignin nanoparticles (LN) and trans-cinnamaldehyde (CN) have been developed to preserve mango freshness and provide food safety. PBS/LN, PBS/CN, and PBS/LN/CN composite films were produced by blown film melt extrusion. This study investigated the effect of CN-LN on the CN remaining content, thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties, diffusion coefficient, and antifungal activity of PBS films both in vitro and in vivo. Results showed that LN in the PBS/LN/CN composite film contained more CN than in the PBS/CN film. The compatibility of CN-LN with PBS produced homogeneous surfaces with enhanced barrier properties. PBS/LN/CN composite films demonstrated superior antifungal efficacy, inhibiting the growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and preserving mango quality during storage. Results suggested that incorporating LN into PBS composite films prolonged the sustained release of antifungal agents, thereby inhibiting microbial growth and extending the shelf life of mangoes. Development of PBS/LN/CN composite films is a beneficial step toward reducing food waste and enhancing food safety.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to develop active packaging based on polypropylene (PP) and polylactic acid (PLA) matrices using a high value by-product extracted from orange peel as an active compound for food packaging applications. Different films with and without orange peel extract (OPE) based on PP and PLA were obtained via cast extrusion and characterized in terms of their mechanical, thermal, optical, and sealing properties. The films obtained were transparent, but when OPE was incorporated, the transmittance spectrum decreased, causing slight coloration. Mechanical properties were affected by the incorporation of OPE, as elongation at break and tensile strength increased in the cross-direction of the PP film, although the main differences found were related to the polymer itself. In addition, sealing strength also increased via the incorporation of OPE in the PP matrix. However, thermal properties were not affected by OPE in the PP matrix but slightly decreased stability in PLA. Regarding antimicrobial activity in in vitro studies, no inhibition of the growth of Listeria innocua, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aspergillus niger, or Escherichia coli was observed. Finally, antioxidant activity was observed in in vitro studies with 2,2-Diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. The results of this study showed that the obtention of materials with OPE incorporated into the PLA and PP matrix is feasible. The new materials obtained can be used for applications of oxidation-sensitive fresh products.

Abstract
In response to the growing demand for biodegraded film with high mechanical properties for complex preservation application scenarios, we developed a curdlan (CD) blended films with exceptional mechanical strength through an alkali dissolution method. Notably, the alkali-soluble CD film exhibited five-fold increase in tensile strength (TS) when compared to its water-soluble counterpart. Furthermore, the inclusion of 2 % bacterial cellulose (BC) resulted in a significant 41.1 % augmentation of the film's TS. Thermal stability improvements were observed through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results provided insights into alterations in film crystallinity and intermolecular interactions. Specifically, the incorporation of 10 % CEO led to an additional improvement in TS. Our experimental investigations involving the packaging of chilled fresh meat with these blended films unveiled their capacity to effectively inhibit microorganism growth, maintain meat color stability, delay protein decomposition and fat oxidation, and extend the storage time up to 9 days. Our study offers a promising solution for food packaging, emphasizing the development of a high-strength degradable CD/BC/CEO blended film, which holds potential for extending the shelf life of food products.

Abstract
The widespread application of biodegradable polylactide (PLA) is hindered by its brittleness. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is commonly utilized as a plasticizer because of its favorable compatibility with PLA. However, the incorporation of PEG considerably diminishes the tensile strength of PLA. To address this issue, reactive isocyanate-modified graphene oxide (mGO) was synthesized and used as an enhancer in PLA/PEG blends. By virtue of the reaction between the isocyanate group in mGO and the terminal hydroxyl groups of PLA and PEG, graphene-based polyurethane (PU) in-situ formed and enhanced the interface between GO and the matrix. Consequently, the PLA/PEG/mGO composites exhibit simultaneously improved tensile and impact strengths, achieving an increase of 20.6% and 29.4%, respectively, compared to PLA/PEG blends. Moreover, the in situ formed PU reduces the relaxation time of the molecule motion and improved the entanglement density, thereby improving the shape-memory recovery rate and final recovery degree of the composites. This work provides a facile method to simultaneously improve the dispersion of GO and enhance its interface with polymer, thereby supplying well comprehensive properties of PLA and extending the applications of biodegradable polymers.

Abstract
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) based sustainable composites incorporated with cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) (CC) at different concentrations (1, 3, 5 and 10 wt%) were prepared using solvent casting method. Performance analysis of PLA/CC composite films in terms of food packaging properties like thermal, optical, oxygen barrier, mechanical, anti-bacterial as well as anti-oxidant effect is carried out. The PLA/CC-5 composite showed complete blockage of UV-B light at 320 nm, which is known to significantly induce the photo-chemical degradation of polymers. The incorporation of CC in the PLA matrix brought in improvement in mechanical and oxygen barrier properties. The PLA composite films showed effective antibacterial activity against food borne bacteria (S. aureus and E. coli), in addition to excellent antioxidant activity. All these important traits exhibited by PLA/CC composite films suggest its potential for food packaging application.

Abstract
Increasing concerns about food safety and the environment have facilitated the development of eco-friendly antibacterial packaging. This study aimed to demonstrate a facile way to fabricate active packaging materials with modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and compare the effects of different modified CNCs on the performance of compostable materials. Polylactic acid (PLA) film was selected as a model, and CNCs were modified with methacrylamide, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and zinc oxide, respectively, and then applied on the surface of PLA films by spray-coating. All modified CNCs showed excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli (>99.999 %). The effects of different CNC modifications on the performance of PLA films were investigated. Compared to neat PLA films, PLA/CNC films exhibited improved mechanical strength with maintained flexibility, lower gas permeability, and faster compost disintegration rate, and extended the shelf life of wrapped pork samples from 3 days to >10 days. Therefore, this work will also facilitate the applications of PLA materials in eco-friendly packaging.

Abstract
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is considered the most promising biobased substitute for fossil-derived polymers due to its compostability, biocompatibility, renewability, and good thermomechanical properties. However, PLA suffers from several shortcomings, such as low heat distortion temperature, thermal resistance, and rate of crystallization, whereas some other specific properties, i.e., flame retardancy, anti-UV, antibacterial or barrier properties, antistatic to conductive electrical characteristics, etc., are required by different end-use sectors. The addition of different nanofillers represents an attractive way to develop and enhance the properties of neat PLA. Numerous nanofillers with different architectures and properties have been investigated, with satisfactory achievements, in the design of PLA nanocomposites. This review paper overviews the current advances in the synthetic routes of PLA nanocomposites, the imparted properties of each nano-additive, as well as the numerous applications of PLA nanocomposites in various industrial fields.

Abstract
As the clinical complications induced by microbial infections are known to have life-threatening side effects, conventional anti-infective therapy is necessary, but not sufficient to overcome these issues. Some of their limitations are connected to drug-related inefficiency or resistance and pathogen-related adaptive modifications. Therefore, there is an urgent need for advanced antimicrobials and antimicrobial devices. A challenging, yet successful route has been the development of new biostatic or biocide agents and biomaterials by considering the indisputable advantages of biopolymers. Polymers are attractive materials due to their physical and chemical properties, such as compositional and structural versatility, tunable reactivity, solubility and degradability, and mechanical and chemical tunability, together with their intrinsic biocompatibility and bioactivity, thus enabling the fabrication of effective pharmacologically active antimicrobial formulations. Besides representing protective or potentiating carriers for conventional drugs, biopolymers possess an impressive ability for conjugation or functionalization. These aspects are key for avoiding malicious side effects or providing targeted and triggered drug delivery (specific and selective cellular targeting), and generally to define their pharmacological efficacy. Moreover, biopolymers can be processed in different forms (particles, fibers, films, membranes, or scaffolds), which prove excellent candidates for modern anti-infective applications. This review contains an overview of antimicrobial polyester-based formulations, centered around the effect of the dimensionality over the properties of the material and the effect of the production route or post-processing actions.

Abstract
In this work, films containing AgNPs were obtained by different green synthesis techniques (AgNP in situ and AgNP L). The inclusion of nanoparticles in the starch matrix improved both mechanical and barrier properties. The migration of AgNPs from the nanocomposite material to three food simulants (water, 3% v/v acetic acid and 15% v/v ethanol) was studied. The experimental data were fitted by using different widely accepted mathematical models (Fickian, Ritger and Peppas, and Weibull), indicating that the AgNP migration followed a complex mechanism. The silver concentration (mg Ag per kg of simulant) that was released from the nanocomposite films was higher for the samples with AgNPs in situ than for those containing AgNP L. Likewise, the maximum release value (0.141 mg/dm2 for AgNPs in situ in acetic acid simulant) was lower than the limits proposed by the legislation (European Commission and MERCOSUR; 10 and 8 mg/dm2, respectively). The replacement of conventional plastic materials by biodegradable ones requires the evaluation of bio-disintegration tests in soil. In this sense, a period of 90 days was necessary to obtain ≥50% weight loss in both nanocomposite films. Additionally, the bio-disintegration of the samples did not contribute with phytotoxic compounds to the soil, allowing the germination of fast-growing seeds.

Abstract
Microcellular nanocomposite foams functionalized with cinnamaldehyde (Ci) were obtained through two-step supercritical foaming and impregnation processing. PLA nanocomposite foams with different C30B concentrations (1, 2, and 3 wt.%) were obtained by foaming with scCO2 at 25 MPa and 135 °C and impregnated with Ci at 12 MPa and 40 °C. The effect of the C30B content and Ci incorporation on the morphological, structural, thermal, and release properties of the developed foams were investigated. The incorporation of Ci was not influenced by C30B’s addition. The presence of C30B and Ci incorporation reduced the average pore diameter slightly and the crystallinity degree of the foams extensively. Simultaneously, the experimental and theoretical characterization of the Ci release from the PLA nanocomposite foams in EtOH 50% was analyzed. The mechanism of Ci release from the foams was defined as a quasi-Fickian diffusion process that could be successfully described using the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. The active PLA foams presented a higher potential of migration and faster release when compared with that reported in commonly used PLA films, showing that biopolymeric foams could be potentially used as active food packaging to improve the migration of active compounds with low migration potentials in order to improve their biological activity in foods.

Abstract
A supercritical solvent impregnation (SSI) technique was employed to incorporate, by batch- and semicontinuous-modes, bioactive olive leaf extract (OLE) into a food-grade multilayer polyethylene terephthalate/polypropylene (PET/PP) film for active food packaging applications. The inclusion of OLE in the polymer surfaces significantly modified the colour properties of the film. A correlation of 87.06% between the CIELAB colour parameters and the amount of the OLE impregnated in the film was obtained which suggests that colour determination can be used as a rapid, non-destructive technique to estimate the OLE loading in the impregnated matrices. The UV barrier and water permeability properties of the films were not significantly modified by the incorporation of OLE. The migration of OLE into a 50% (v/v) ethanol food simulant demonstrated faster release of OLE from the PP surface than from the PET surface which may be due to the different interactions between OLE and each polymer.

Abstract
The performance characteristics of polylactic acid (PLA) as an active food packaging film can be highly influenced by the incorporation of active agents (AAs) into PLA, and the type of processing technique. In this review, the effect of processing techniques and the addition of natural AAs on the properties related to PLA performance as a packaging material are summarized and described through a systematic analysis, giving new insights about the relation between processing techniques, types of AA, physical–mechanical properties, barriers, optical properties, compostability, controlled release, and functionalities in order to contribute to the progress made in designing antioxidant and antimicrobial PLA packaging films. The addition of AAs into PLA films affected their optical properties and influenced polymer chain reordering, modifying their thermal properties, functionality, and compostability in terms of the chemical nature of AAs. The mechanical and barrier performance of PLA was affected by the AA’s dispersion degree and crystallinity changes resulting from specific processing techniques. In addition, hydrophobicity and AA concentration also modified the barrier properties of PLA. The release kinetics of AAs from PLA were tuned, modifying diffusion coefficient of the AAs in terms of the different physical properties of the films that resulted from specific processing techniques. Several developments based on the incorporation of antimicrobial and antioxidant substances into PLA have displayed outstanding activities for food protection against microbial growth and oxidation.

Abstract
Bionanocomposites based on Polylactide (PLA) and Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) blends were successfully obtained through a combined extrusion and impregnation process using supercritical CO2 (scCO2). Graphene oxide (GO) and cinnamaldehyde (Ci) were incorporated into the blends as nano-reinforcement and an active compound, respectively, separately, and simultaneously. From the results, cinnamaldehyde quantification values varied between 5.7% and 6.1% (w/w). When GO and Ci were incorporated, elongation percentage increased up to 16%, and, therefore, the mechanical properties were improved, with respect to neat PLA. The results indicated that the Ci diffusion through the blends and bionanocomposites was influenced by the nano-reinforcing incorporation. The disintegration capacity of the developed materials decreased with the incorporation of GO and PHB, up to 14 and 23 days of testing, respectively, without compromising the biodegradability characteristics of the final material.

Abstract
The starch/polyvinyl alcohol (ST/PVA) films incorporated with cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) were developed. The effect of MFC content on the films' properties was studied. The SEM results showed that MFC promoted compatibility among starch, PVA and CIN. With increased content of MFC, the strength of the films was improved and their flexibility reduced, the films' crystallinity degree and hydrophobicity were improved. The oxygen and water vapor permeability of the films both reduced first and then increased as a whole. The release of CIN from films into the food stimulant (10% ethanol) could be controlled by MFC. When MFC content was between 1% and 7.5%, it decelerated the release of CIN but high MFC content exceeded 10% promoted the release of CIN. It revealed that films containing CIN could inhibit growth of S. putrefaciens. It showed a good prospect of using MFC to develop controlled release active ST/PVA films.

Lignin exhibited numerous advantages such as plentiful functional groups, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and high carbon content, which can be transformed into composites and carbon materials. Lignin-based materials are usually environmentally friendly and low cost, and are widely used in energy storage, environment, electronic devices, and other fields. In this review article, the pretreatment separation methods like hydrothermal process are illustrated briefly, and the properties and categories of technical lignin are introduced. Then, the latest progress of lignin-based composites and lignin-derived carbon materials is summarized. Finally, the current challenges and future developments were suggested based on our knowledge. It is expected that this review paper favored the applications of composites and lignin-derived carbon materials in the future.

Abstract
This study was dedicated to the functional characterization of innovative poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based bilayer films containing lignocellulosic nanostructures (cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) or lignin nanoparticles (LNPs)) and umbelliferone (UMB) as active ingredients (AIs), prepared to be used as active food packaging. Materials proved to have active properties associated with the antioxidant action of UMB and LNPs, as the combination of both ingredients in the bilayer formulations produced a positive synergic effect inducing the highest antioxidant capacity. The results of overall migration for the PLA bilayer systems combining CNCs or LNPs and UMB revealed that none of these samples exceeded the overall migration limit required by the current normative for food packaging materials in both non-polar and polar simulants. Finally, all the hydrophobic monolayer and bilayer films were completely disintegrated in composting conditions in less than 18 days of incubation, providing a good insight on the potential use of these materials for application as active and compostable food packaging.
