Morphological, barrier, and mechanical properties of banana starch films reinforced with cellulose nanoparticles from plantain rachis

Bibliometric study and potential applications in the development of starch films with nanocellulose: A perspective from 2019 to 2023

This study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis of starch films with nanocellulose, using the Scopus database and VOSviewer and Bibliometrix software. A total of 258 documents were identified between 2019 and 2023, reflecting a growing interest in research, particularly in journals such as the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Polymers, and Carbohydrate Polymers. The most common terms were "starch" (349 occurrences), "cellulose" (207), and "tensile strength" (175). China (58 articles), Brazil (38), and India (33) led scientific production, with authors like Ilyas (13 articles) and Sapuan (10) at the forefront. Approximately 41.7 % of the studies used corn starch. The analysis revealed that 66 % of the studies investigated films with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), 32 % with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and 2 % with bacterial nanocellulose (CB). The majority of studies (94.1 %) used the casting method for film production. Additionally, 35.44 % focused on reinforcing films with nanocellulose, while 7 % developed blends with other biopolymers. About 59.44 % examined the performance of starch films for food packaging, 11.25 % explored practical applications in various foods. Furthermore, 7.94 % incorporated active agents to improve antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, 1.30 % investigated active packaging. Moreover, 2.36 % explored the use of films in materials engineering, and 2.36 % explored biomedical potential. Only 0.40 % evaluated the impact of films on wastewater treatment. The analysis highlights the potential of starch films with nanocellulose, demonstrating their diverse applications and the growing interest in the field.

Robust holocellulose barrier films from agricultural byproduct of Camellia Oleifera shells through dilute acid and ultrasonic treatments

Camellia oleifera shells (COS) are commonly discarded as an agricultural by-product. Effective utilization of COS can not only reduce environmental pollution but also enhance the value of the tea-oil industry. The unique composition of COS, with high hemicellulose and low cellulose content, makes it suitable for the production of film materials. In this study, COS holocellulose (COSH) was isolated and treated with four different types of dilute acids (15 % acetic acid, gallic acid, citric acid, and 0.5 % sulfuric acid, 1-24 h, 75°-105 °C) to produce barrier films. Among these, citric acid treatment resulted in the strongest and toughest film. By incorporating a brief ultrasonic pretreatment (15 min, 300 w) prior to the citric acid reaction, translucent films were achieved with impressive mechanical properties, showing tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break up to 75.72 MPa, 3306.11 MPa and 8.01 %, respectively. Through a comprehensive analysis of the structure-property relationships, it was discovered that the combined effects of ultrasonic and citric acid treatments disrupted the integrated holocelluose fiber structure and facilitated the formation of a robust hydrogen bond network during the film preparation process. The resulting films exhibited enhanced water vapor barrier properties, antioxidant capacity, and complete decomposition in soil, suggesting the potential application as wraps for fresh fruits.

Sodium alginate-based indicator film with enhanced physicochemical properties induced by cellulose nanocrystals and monitor the freshness of chilled meat

Intelligent indicator films with colorimetric pH indicator properties were developed, incorporating black soybean seed coat anthocyanin (BA), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and sodium alginate (SA) to monitor meat freshness. The effect of different CNC additions on the microstructure, water barrier properties of the films, and BA release kinetics were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that with the increasement of CNC addition, the mechanical properties of SA/BA/CNC films were improved, the water contact angle significantly increased from 51.6° to 69°. Moreover, water solubility, vapor adsorption, and permeability significantly decreased, indicating enhanced water barrier properties. The release kinetic results showed that BA was released rapidly within 72 h and slowly thereafter, and its release process was described by Fick's model. Films with 7 % and 10 % CNC had lower BA diffusion coefficients. Their diffusions were formulated as linear regression equations (y = nx + a), where R2 was >0.80 and n was <0.50. Structural characterization showed that CNC immobilized BA mainly through hydrogen bonding, forming compact network microstructures with SA and BA. Meat freshness monitoring results showed that the film containing 7 % CNC showed visible color changes with increasing total volatile basic nitrogen and pH, along with low BA release, high water barrier and mechanical properties. Therefore, CNC has great potential for improving the physicochemical properties of indicator films, and the intelligent colorimetric indicator film could be applied to various food product.

Crystallographic structure, antibacterial effect, and catalytic activities of fig extract mediated silver nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) play a pivotal role in the current research landscape due to their extensive applications in engineering, biotechnology, and industry. The aim is to use fig (Ficus hispida Linn. f.) extract (FE) for eco-friendly Ag NPs synthesis, followed by detailed characterization, antibacterial testing, and investigation of bioelectricity generation. This study focuses on the crystallographic features and nanostructures of Ag NPs synthesized from FE. Locally sourced fig was boiled in deionized water, cooled, and doubly filtered. A color change in 45 mL 0.005 M AgNO3 and 5 mL FE after 40 min confirmed the bio-reduction of silver ions to Ag NPs. Acting as a reducing and capping agent, the fig extract ensures a green and sustainable process. Various analyses, including UV-vis absorption spectrophotometry (UV), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles, and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the fig extract revealed the presence of eleven chemicals. Notably, the Ag NPs exhibited a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 418 nm, confirmed by UV analysis, while FTIR and XRD results highlighted the presence of active functional groups in FE and the crystalline nature of Ag NPs respectively. With an average particle size of 44.57 nm determined by FESEM and a crystalline size of 35.87 nm determined by XRD, the nanoparticles showed strong antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli. Most importantly, fig fruit extract has been used as the bio-electrolyte solution to generate electricity for the first time in this report. The findings of this report can be the headway of nano-biotechnology in medicinal and device applications.

Characterization and Implementation of Cocoa Pod Husk as a Reinforcing Agent to Obtain Thermoplastic Starches and Bio-Based Composite Materials

When the cocoa pod husk (CPH) is used and processed, two types of flour were obtained and can be differentiated by particle size, fine flour (FFCH), and coarse flour (CFCH) and can be used as a possible reinforcement for the development of bio-based composite materials. Each flour was obtained from chopping, drying by forced convection, milling by blades, and sieving using the 100 mesh/bottom according to the Tyler series. Their physicochemical, thermal, and structural characterization made it possible to identify the lower presence of lignin and higher proportions of cellulose and pectin in FFCH. Based on the properties identified in FFCH, it was included in the processing of thermoplastic starch (TPS) from the plantain pulp (Musa paradisiaca) and its respective bio-based composite material using plantain peel short fiber (PPSF) as a reinforcing agent using the following sequence of processing techniques: extrusion, internal mixing, and compression molding. The influence of FFCH contributed to the increase in ultimate tensile strength (7.59 MPa) and higher matrix-reinforcement interaction when obtaining the freshly processed composite material (day 0) when compared to the bio-based composite material with higher FCP content (30%) in the absence of FFCH. As for the disadvantages of FFCH, reduced thermal stability (323.57 to 300.47 °C) and losses in ultimate tensile strength (0.73 MPa) and modulus of elasticity (142.53 to 26.17 MPa) during storage progress were identified. In the case of TPS, the strengthening action of FFCH was not evident. Finally, the use of CFCH was not considered for the elaboration of the bio-based composite material because it reached a higher lignin content than FFCH, which was expected to decrease its affinity with the TPS matrix, resulting in lower mechanical properties in the material.

Biosynthesis and characterizations of silver nanoparticles by using green banana peel extract: Evaluation of their antibacterial and electrical performances

Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) hold tremendous promise in nano-bioscience, with applications spanning engineering, science, and industry. This study delves into their fabrication process, crystallographic characteristics, and nanostructures. Employing green banana peel extract (GBPE), Ag NPs were synthesized. Various analytical techniques, such as UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometry (UV), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) elucidate their attributes. UV-visible analysis reveals a 413 nm absorption band due to surface plasmon resonance. The Ag NPs exhibit a face-centered cubic structure with an average crystallite size of 45.87 nm. Lattice parameters and dislocation density are also determined. When tested against harmful bacteria, such as E. coli and S. epidermidis, advanced microscopy reveals a median size of particles of 55.12 nm and demonstrates their antibacterial characteristics. These environmentally benign Ag NPs also improve the efficiency of bio-electrochemical cells (BECs), opening the door to large-scale manufacturing at a reasonable cost and broadening the range of possible uses.

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles by banana pulp extract: Characterizations, antibacterial activity, and bioelectricity generation

Here, green banana pulp extract (PE) has been used as a bio-reducing agent for the reduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Bio-synthesized AgNPs were characterized by using UV, XRD, FEEM, TEM, and FTIR analysis. The face-centered cubic structures of AgNPs were formed with an average crystallite size of 31.26 nm and an average particle size of 42.97 nm. In this report, the electrical activities of green synthesized AgNPs have been evaluated along with the antibacterial activities. The antibacterial activities of AgNPs were evaluated against two pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli (gram-negative) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (gram-positive). AgNPs were added to the electrochemical cell and results demonstrated the improvement of power of the electrochemical cell. Green synthesized AgNPs showed excellent antibacterial activities against both gram-positive and negative bacteria and most importantly the NPs played an important role as an effective catalyst to enhance the electrical performance of bio-electrochemical cells. These significant findings may help in the advancement of nanotechnology in biomedical applications as well as in the creation of cheap and eco-friendly power generation devices.

Effect of apple polyphenols on physicochemical properties of pea starch/pulp cellulose nanofiber composite biodegradable films

A pea starch (PS) and pulp cellulose nanofibers (CNF-P) hybrid matrix biodegradable film was prepared using apple polyphenol (AP) as the active substance. SEM and thermogravimetric analyses showed that apple polyphenols could be uniformly distributed and form hydrogen bonds with the matrix, and the increase in crystallinity improved the thermal stability of the films (the final residue of the films increased from 22.66 % to 31.82 %). The TS and EAB of the films reached their maximum values of 11.14 ± 1.73 MPa and 71.55 ± 8.8 %, respectively, at an AP content of 1.5 %. It should be noted that the antioxidant properties of the films were significantly positively correlated with the AP content, and the DPPH radical scavenging rate of the films reached 73.77 % at an AP content of 4.5 %, which was about 49 times higher than that of the control film. The same trend was observed in the UV-vis spectra. In addition, the total color difference and water solubility of the membranes increased from 4.29 ± 0.29 to 31.86 ± 1.90 and from 20.01 ± 0.97 % to 21.70 ± 1.99 %, respectively, and the biodegradability also showed an upward trend. These findings provide a theoretical basis and data support for the development of multifunctional biodegradable food packaging materials.

Functionality and characterization of modified starch films with pineapple leaf fibers

The objective of this work was to modify banana starch with pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) and its production of biodegradable films. The reaction conditions of the starch modification were a Starch/PALF mass ratio of 50, a time of 1 h and a temperature of 140 °C, to obtain a yield of 41.18 %. Characterization by FTIR and NMR confirmed that the chemical reaction was carried out. XRD and TGA analysis showed that the crystalline zones of the starch were affected during the modification and the product obtained is thermally less stable compared to unmodified starch. The modified starch showed a lower pasting profile compared to the native starch; however, the modified starch showed the ability to form a film. The starch-PALF films were obtained by the casting method and partially characterized. These films presented better mechanical properties compared to the unmodified films. Also, these films could compete with conventional non-biodegradable plastics.

Recent advances in qualitative and quantitative characterization of nanocellulose-reinforced nanocomposites: A review

Nanocellulose has received immense consideration owing to its valuable inherent traits and impressive physicochemical properties such as biocompatibility, thermal stability, non-toxicity, and tunable surface chemistry. These features have inspired researchers to deploy nanocellulose as nanoscale reinforcement materials for bio-based polymers. A simple yet efficient characterization method is often required to gain insights into the effectiveness of various types of nanocellulose. Despite a decade of continuous research and booming growth in scientific publications, nanocellulose research lacks a measuring tool that can characterize its features with acceptable speed and reliability. Implementing reliable characterization techniques is critical to monitor the specifications of nanocellulose alone or in the final product. Many techniques have been developed aiming to measure the nano-reinforcement mechanisms of nanocellulose in polymer composites. This review gives a full account of the scientific underpinnings of techniques that can characterize the shape and arrangement of nanocellulose. This review aims to deliver consolidated details on the properties and characteristics of nanocellulose in biopolymer composite materials to improve various structural, mechanical, barrier and thermal properties. We also present a comprehensive description of the safety features of nanocellulose before and after being loaded within biopolymeric matrices.

Peroxyacetic Acid Pretreatment: A Potentially Promising Strategy towards Lignocellulose Biorefinery

The stubborn and complex structure of lignocellulose hinders the valorization of each component of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in the biorefinery industries. Therefore, efficient pretreatment is an essential and prerequisite step for lignocellulose biorefinery. Recently, a considerable number of studies have focused on peroxyacetic acid (PAA) pretreatment in lignocellulose fractionation and some breakthroughs have been achieved in recent decades. In this article, we aim to highlight the challenges of PAA pretreatment and propose a roadmap towards lignocellulose fractionation by PAA for future research. As a novel promising pretreatment method towards lignocellulosic fractionation, PAA is a strong oxidizing agent that can selectively remove lignin and hemicellulose from lignocellulose, retaining intact cellulose for downstream upgrading. PAA in lignocellulose pretreatment can be divided into commercial PAA, chemical activation PAA, and enzymatic in-situ generation of PAA. Each PAA for lignocellulose fractionation shows its own advantages and disadvantages. To meet the theme of green chemistry, enzymatic in-situ generation of PAA has aroused a great deal of enthusiasm in lignocellulose fractionation. Furthermore, mass balance and techno-economic analyses are discussed in order to evaluate the feasibility of PAA pretreatment in lignocellulose fractionation. Ultimately, some perspectives and opportunities are proposed to address the existing limitations in PAA pretreatment towards biomass biorefinery valorization. In summary, from the views of green chemistry, enzymatic in-situ generation of PAA will become a cutting-edge topic research in the lignocellulose fractionation in future.

Unravelling the Therapeutic Potential of Nano-Delivered Functional Foods in Chronic Respiratory Diseases

Chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract is one of the most concerning public health issues, as it can lead to chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), some of which are more detrimental than others. Chronic respiratory diseases include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer, and pulmonary fibrosis. The conventional drug therapies for the management and treatment of CRDs only address the symptoms and fail to reverse or recover the chronic-inflammation-mediated structural and functional damage of the respiratory tract. In addition, the low efficacy and adverse effects of these drugs have directed the attention of researchers towards nutraceuticals in search of potential treatment strategies that can not only ameliorate CRD symptoms but also can repair and reverse inflammatory damage. Hence, there is a growing interest toward investigating the medicinal benefits of nutraceuticals, such as rutin, curcumin, zerumbone, and others. Nutraceuticals carry many nutritional and therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, and anti-obesity properties, and usually do not have as many adverse effects, as they are naturally sourced. Recently, the use of nanoparticles has also been increasingly studied for the nano drug delivery of these nutraceuticals. The discrete size of nanoparticles holds great potential for the level of permeability that can be achieved when transporting these nutraceutical compounds. This review is aimed to provide an understanding of the use of nutraceuticals in combination with nanoparticles against CRDs and their mechanisms involved in slowing down or reversing the progression of CRDs by inhibiting pro-inflammatory signaling pathways.

The Properties, Modification, and Application of Banana Starch

Banana is a tropical fruit crop that is consumed at large, not only because of the quantity produced but also because it serves the calorific needs of millions of people. Banana is a potential source of high starch content (more than 60%). The application of starch for various purposes is dependent upon its structural, physicochemical, and functional properties. A native starch does not possess all required properties for specific use in the food product. To improve its application, starch can be modified physically, chemically, and enzymatically. Each of these modification methods provides different characteristics to the modified starch. This review aims to examine the chemical composition, granule morphology, crystallinity, pasting, thermal properties, and digestibility of banana starch, and discusses the various modifications and potential applications of banana starch in the food industry.

Development of biodegradable films using sunflower protein isolates and bacterial nanocellulose as innovative food packaging materials for fresh fruit preservation

This study presents the valorization of side streams from the sunflower-based biodiesel industry for the production of bio-based and biodegradable food packaging following circular economy principles. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was produced via fermentation in 6 L static tray bioreactors using nutrient-rich supplements derived from the enzymatic hydrolysis of sunflower meal (SFM) combined with crude glycerol as carbon source. Novel biofilms were produced using either matrices of protein isolates extracted from sunflower meal (SFMPI) alone or SFMPI matrices reinforced with nanocellulose biofillers of commercial or bacterial origin. Acid hydrolysis was employed for ex-situ modification of BC to nanostructures (56 nm). The biofilms reinforced with bacterial nanocellulose structures (SFMPI-BNC) showed 64.5% higher tensile strength, 75.5% higher Young’s modulus, 131.5% higher elongation at break, 32.5% lower water solubility and 14.1% lower water vapor permeability than the biofilms produced only with SFMPI. The biofilms were evaluated on fresh strawberries packaging showing that the SFMPI-BNC-based films lead to effective preservation at 10 °C considering microbial growth and physicochemical profile (weight loss, chemical characterization, color, firmness and respiration activity). The SFMPI-BNC-based films could be applied in fresh fruit packaging applications.

Development and Characterization of Plantain (Musa paradisiaca) Flour-Based Biopolymer Films Reinforced with Plantain Fibers

Agroindustrial wastes are a cheap and abundant source of natural fibers and macromolecules that can be used in the manufacturing of biocomposites. This study presents the development and thermo-mechanical characterization of a bio-composite film (TPF/PF), made of thermoplastic banana flour (TPF) matrix and plantain fibers (PF). Fabricated materials were characterized by physical analysis, chemical composition, Fourier-transformed spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (TGA), mechanical analysis, and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The physical analysis showed that TPF and PF have a low density and high affinity to water resulting in a lightweight, renewable, and biodegradable TPF/PF composite. The chemical composition and spectra analysis of the fiber showed that PF is a potential candidate for reinforcing composites due to its high α-cellulose and low lignin content. The thermal analysis determined that TPF degrades at a lower temperature than PF, therefore the matrix sets the processing temperature for TPF/PF composite films. The mechanical test showed an improvement in the tensile properties of the composite in comparison to neat TPF. Tensile strength and Young’s modulus were improved by 345% and 1196%, respectively, when PF fibers was used. Good bonding and mechanical interlocking of PF to the TPF were identified by SEM. Therefore, potential biocomposites can be developed using natural fibers and thermoplastic starches obtained from plantain agroindustrial wastes.

Bio-packaging based on cellulose acetate from banana pseudostem and containing Butia catarinensis extracts

Banana (Musa acuminata) pseudostem cellulose was extracted and acetylated (CA) to prepare membranes with potential use as bio-packages. The CA membrane was embedded by Butia seed (CA-BS) or Butia pulp (CA-BP) extracts obtained from Butia catarinenses (Butia). The produced CA, CA-BS, and CA-BP membranes were evaluated for their physical-chemical, mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial properties. The process for obtaining the cellulose yielded a material with about 92.17% cellulose (DS = 2.85). The purity, cellulose degree acetylation, and the incorporation of Butia extracts into the membranes were confirmed by FTIR. The CA-BS and CA-BP membranes showed a smaller contact angle and higher swelling ratio than the CA membrane. Furthermore, Butia seed or pulp extracts reduced the elastic modulus and deformation at break compared to the CA membrane. The DSC analysis suggested the compatibility between sections and the CA matrix, whereas the TGA analysis confirmed the thermal stability of the membranes. Moreover, less than 1% of the Butia seed and pulp extracts were put into a food simulant media from the membrane. Finally, the CA-BS and CA-BP membranes could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli on their surface, confirming the potential use of these membranes as bio-packaging for food preservation.
