Removal of heavy metal ion cobalt (II) from wastewater via adsorption method using microcrystalline cellulose-magnesium hydroxide

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of Cu(II) by sodium alginate/carboxymethylcellulose/magnesium hydroxide (SC-MH) hydrogel

In the present work, an environmentally-friendly, reusable hydrogel ball characterized by its great adsorption capacity to Cu(II) was synthesized. The preparation of this hydrogel drew on sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as primary composition elements. The endeavor brought novelty by ingeniously infusing it with slurry magnesium hydroxide (MH). The factors (pH, SC-MH amount, initial concentration, adsorption time) that are critical to adsorption were also investigated. FTIR, SEM-EDS and XPS were used to reveal the adsorption mechanism of Cu on SC-MH. The results show that the surface of SC-MH is rough, and there are a large number of gully-like structures conducive to adsorption, which are rich in hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity reached 215.68 mg/g. Based on its high R2 value (0.999), the Langmuir model is determined to be the most appropriate for describing the adsorption behavior, indicating monolayer homogeneous adsorption. The kinetic data align well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, thermodynamic analysis reveals the adsorption process to be spontaneous and endothermic, as demonstrated by a negative ΔG and positive ΔH (38.8859 KJ/mol). The mechanism involves electrostatic attraction, chelation, Mg(OH)2 adsorption and ion exchange.

Recovery of Metal Ions (Cd2+, Co2+, and Ni2+) from Nitrate and Sulfate on Laser-Induced Graphene Film Using Applied Voltage and Its Application

The urgent removal of Cd, Co, and Ni from nitrate and sulfate is essential to mitigate the potential risk of chemical pollution from large volumes of industrial wastewater. In this study, these metal ions were rapidly recovered through applying voltage on nitrate and sulfate, utilizing laser-induced graphene/polyimide (LIG/PI) film as the electrode. Following the application of external voltage, both the pH value and conductivity of the solution undergo changes. Compared to Co2+ and Ni2+, Cd2+ exhibits a lower standard electrode potential and stronger reducibility. Consequently, in both nitrate and sulfate solutions, the reaction sequence follows the order of Cd2+ > Co2+ > Ni2+, with the corresponding electrode adsorption quantities in the order of Cd2+ > Co2+ ~ Ni2+. Additionally, using the recovered Co(OH)2 as the raw material, a LiCoO2 composite was prepared. The assembled battery with this composite exhibited a specific capacity of 122.8 mAh g-1, meeting practical application requirements. This research has significance for fostering green development.

Study of graphene incorporation into ZnO-PVA nanocomposites modified electrode for sensitive detection of cadmium

The presence of heavy metals often causes significant health risks, particularly cadmium, which is known for its high toxicity. In this study, a glassy carbon electrode was successfully modified by incorporating ZnO-PVA-Graphene nanocomposite, leveraging the excellent electrical properties and electron mobility of the material. Comprehensive material analysis, including XRD, confirmed that ZnO maintained its hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure despite the addition of graphene. Moreover, FESEM analysis showed that increasing graphene concentration led to a reduction in ZnO particle size by 85, 68, and 52 nm, respectively, accompanied by a decrease in band gap energy, as verified by UV-Vis measurements. Photoluminescence tests were also conducted and the result showed a noticeable blue shift in ZnO-PVA-Graphene nanocomposites compared to ZnO-PVA, specifically in the near band-edge (NBE) UV emission within the 374-379 nm wavelength range. Through I-V characterization, the optimal graphene concentration for cadmium detection was identified as 1.5 wt% in ZnO-PVA-Graphene nanocomposites, showing an approximate ohmic response. Meanwhile, square-wave voltammetry analysis of cadmium concentrations ranging from 0 to 80 ppm produced a coefficient of determination of 0.98926 and a Limit of Detection (LOD) of 9.88 ppm. These results showed the significant potential of ZnO-PVA-Graphene nanocomposites as a promising material for further development as an effective electrode modifier, enhancing the sensitivity of detection systems.

Removal of cadmium and cobalt from water by Slovak bentonites: efficiency, isotherms, and kinetic study

Slovak bentonite was used as an effective natural adsorbent for the removal of Cd(II) and Co(II). Characterization of the samples was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy with an X-ray energy dispersion spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Adsorption experiments were carried out for pure water and artificial seawater, each containing cobalt and cadmium cations within the concentration range of 5-60 mg/L. The highest bentonite adsorption capacities of the tested bentonites were 23.5 (Cd) and 32.2 (Co) mg g-1. The kinetics data revealed that, in addition to chemisorption, intraparticle diffusion contributes to metal removal. The physical and structural properties of bentonites play an important role in adsorption. Bentonite P 135 from the Lieskovec deposit showed the highest efficiency for removing both ions, with removal percentages exceeding 90% and 77.5% for pure water and artificial seawater, respectively. The results indicate the suitability of using Slovak bentonites as an alternative sorbent for both metal extractions. The mechanism of metal ion adsorption on bentonite clay can be understood through surface complexation and ion exchange. The examined bentonite deposits show potential as promising natural sorbents for the removal of cobalt and cadmium cations from polluted waters.

Adsorption of Sb(III) and Pb(II) in wastewater by magnetic γ-Fe2O3-loaded sludge biochar: Performance and mechanisms

Magnetically modified carbon-based adsorbent (BC@γ-Fe2O3) was prepared through facile route using activated sludge biomass and evaluated for the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Pb(II). BC@γ-Fe2O3 exhibited outstanding Sb(III) and Pb(II) adsorption capacity when 200 mg of adsorbent was employed at pH 5.0 for 240 min, with the removal efficiency higher than 90%. The experiments demonstrated the excellent reusability and the potent anti-interference properties of the prepared absorbent. Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic were prior to describe the adsorption process. The adsorption of Sb(III) and Pb(II) onto BC@γ-Fe2O3 was spontaneous and endothermic. BC@γ-Fe2O3 with high specific surface area revealed the exceptional competence to absorb Sb(III) and Pb(II) through pore filling, electrostatic adsorption and complexation. The adsorption mechanisms of Sb(III) and Pb(II) showed similarities with slight disparities. The removal of Sb(III) involved the Fe-O-Sb bond and π-π bond, while the adsorption of Pb(II) was closely related to ion exchange. Moreover, Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) in a minor part during adsorption. The Fe-O-Cl active sites on BC allowed for the binding of γ-Fe2O3, guaranteeing the abundant adsorption sites and stability. BC@γ-Fe2O3 provides an efficient and green insight into the simultaneous removal of complex heavy metals with promising application in wastewater treatment.

Preparation, characterization, and adsorption kinetics of graphene oxide/chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose composites for the removal of environmentally relevant toxic metals

This study attempted to develop a low-cost and eco-friendly bio-based composite adsorbent that is highly efficient in capturing potential toxic metals. The bio-composite adsorbent was prepared using graphene oxide (GO), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS); and characterized using FTIR, SEM-EDX and WAXD techniques. Metal-ion concentration in an aqueous solution was measured by ICP-OES. This article reveals that the adsorption of heavy metal ions varied according to the adsorbent quantity, initial metal concentration, pH, and interaction time. The metal ions' adsorption capacity (mg/g) was observed to increase when the interaction time and metal concentration increased. Conversely, metal ions adsorption was decreased with an increase in adsorbent dosages. The effect of pH on metal ions' adsorption was ion-specific. The substantial adsorption by GO/CMC/CS composite for Co2+, CrO42-, Mn2+ and Cd2+, had the respective values of 43.55, 77.70, 57.78, and 91.38 mg/g under acidic conditions. The metal ions experimental data were best fitted with pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics, and Freundlich isotherm model (except Co2+). The separation factors (RL) value in the present investigation were found between 0 and 1, meaning that the metal ions adsorption onto GO/CS/CMC composite is favorable. The RL and sorption intensity (1/n) values fitted well to the adsorption isotherm.

Enhanced adsorption selectivity of Au(III) over Cu(II) from acidic chloride solutions by chitosan/palm kernel fatty acid distillate/magnetite nanocomposites

This work aimed to develop a modified chitosan adsorbent with enhanced adsorption selectivity for Au(III) over Cu(II) from acidic chloride solutions using low-cost and green raw materials. Various adsorbents, i.e., chitosan powder, chitosan microbeads, chitosan/palm kernel fatty acid distillate (PKFAD) microcomposites, magnetite nanoparticles, and chitosan/PKFAD/magnetite nanocomposites (CPMNs), were first evaluated for their ability to adsorb Au(III) and Cu(II) from single- and binary-metal solutions across different pH levels, followed by parametric analysis of Au(III) and Cu(II) adsorption from binary- and multi-metal solutions onto CPMNs, Au(III) desorption from Au(III)-loaded CPMNs, and reusability of CPMNs. Finally, Au(III)-loaded CPMNs were characterized with SEM-EDX, XRD, FTIR, and XPS to confirm the proposed adsorption mechanisms. Among all the adsorbents studied, CPMNs exhibited outstanding performance in adsorbing Au(III) from an equimolar binary Au(III)-Cu(II) solution, achieving the highest equilibrium adsorption capacity of 0.479 mmol/g (94.4 mg/g) without reaching saturation. Under optimal adsorption conditions of pH 3, 1 g/L CPMN dosage, and 90 min contact time, CPMNs adsorbed 96 % of Au(III) with a selectivity over Cu(II) exceeding 99 %. CPMNs demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining over 80 % adsorption and desorption efficiencies for 5 cycles. The proposed adsorption mechanisms of CPMNs for Au(III) encompass electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, solvation, and reduction.

Design and Development of a Pilot-Scale Industrial Wastewater Treatment System with Plant Biomass and EDTA

The impact generated by the indiscriminate disposal of heavy metals into the different bodies of water is not only environmental but also social due to the health effects it produces in several organisms, including ourselves. Therefore, treatment systems around the world are the subject of continuous research to find treatment systems that are economical, efficient, and easy to implement in the industries that generate these increasingly harmful impacts on society and the environment in general. One way to design and develop systems of water treatment is that which takes advantage of the waste generated, such as the waste from the E. crassipes plant. The conditions of this plant make it perfect due to its abundant biomass and important content of cellulose and hemicellulose. Nevertheless, in almost all the investigations that characterize the way in which the biomass of this plant adsorbs heavy metals, it does so under laboratory conditions, being very far from the reality of industrial discharges. The objective of this project is to design and develop a pilot-scale industrial wastewater treatment system with plant biomass and EDTA. Three pilot-scale systems were built with EDTA-modified biomass in different concentrations, giving the parameters of the design for the development of a system that can treat around 80 L of Chromium (VI) contaminated water. This treatment system with E. crassipes biomass and EDTA with proportions of 9:1 costs around USD 10, which is quite cheap compared to conventional ones.

Functional MOF-Based Materials for Environmental and Biomedical Applications: A Critical Review

Over the last ten years, there has been a growing interest in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are a unique category of porous materials that combine organic and inorganic components. MOFs have garnered significant attention due to their highly favorable characteristics, such as environmentally friendly nature, enhanced surface area and pore volume, hierarchical arrangements, and adjustable properties, as well as their versatile applications in fields such as chemical engineering, materials science, and the environmental and biomedical sectors. This article centers on examining the advancements in using MOFs for environmental remediation purposes. Additionally, it discusses the latest developments in employing MOFs as potential tools for disease diagnosis and drug delivery across various ailments, including cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders, and ocular diseases. Firstly, a concise overview of MOF evolution and the synthetic techniques employed for creating MOFs are provided, presenting their advantages and limitations. Subsequently, the challenges, potential avenues, and perspectives for future advancements in the utilization of MOFs in the respective application domains are addressed. Lastly, a comprehensive comparison of the materials presently employed in these applications is conducted.

Eco-Friendly Recycling of Lithium Batteries for Extraction of High-Purity Metals

The significant increase in lithium batteries consumption produces a significant quantity of discarded lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). On the one hand, the shortage of high-grade ores leads to the necessity of processing low-grade ores, which contain a low percentage of valuable metals in comparison to the discarded LIBs that contain a high percentage of these metals, which enhances the processing of the discarded LIBs. On the other hand, the processing of discarded LIBs reduces the negative environmental effects that result from their storage and the harmful elements contained in their composition. Hence, the current study aims at developing cost-effective and ecofriendly technology for cobalt and lithium metal ion recovery based on discarded LIBs. A novel synthesized solid-phase adsorbent (TZAB) was utilized for the selective removal of cobalt from synthetic solutions and spent LIBs. The synthesized TZAB adsorbent was characterized by using 13C-NMR, GC-MS, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and TGA. The factors affecting the adsorption of cobalt and lithium ions from synthetic solutions and spent LIBs, including the sorbent dose, pH, contact time, temperature, and cobalt concentration were investigated. The conditions surrounding the recovery of cobalt and lithium from processing discarded LIBs, were investigated to optimize the maximum recovery. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models were used to study the kinetics of the adsorption process. The obtained results showed that high-purity CoC₂O₄ and Li₃PO₄ were obtained with a purity of 95% and 98.3% and a percent recovery of 93.48% and 95.76%, respectively. The maximum recovery of Co(II) from synthetic solutions was obtained at C₀ = 500 mg·L^-1, dose of 0.08 g, pH 7.5, T = 25 °C, and reaction time = 90 min. The collected data from Langmuir's isotherm and the adsorption processes of Co agree with the data predicted by the D-R isotherm models, which shows that the adsorption of Co(II) onto the TZAB seems to be chemisorption, and the results agree with the Langmuir and D-R isotherm models.

Ni-Al layered double hydroxide-coupled layered mesoporous titanium dioxide (Ni-Al LDH/LM-TiO2) composites with integrated adsorption-photocatalysis performance

Nickel aluminum layered double hydroxides (Ni-Al LDHs) and layered mesoporous titanium dioxide (LM-TiO₂) were prepared via a simple precipitation process and novel precipitation-peptization method, respectively, and Ni-Al LDH-coupled LM-TiO₂ (Ni-Al LDH/LM-TiO₂) composites with dual adsorption and photodegradation properties were obtained via the hydrothermal approach. The adsorption and photocatalytic properties were investigated in detail with methyl orange as the target, and the coupling mechanism was systematically studied. The sample with the best performance was recovered after photocatalytic degradation, which was labeled as 11% Ni-Al LDH/LM TiO₂(ST), and characterization and stability studies were carried out. The results showed that Ni-Al LDHs showed good adsorption for pollutants. Ni-Al LDH coupling enhanced the absorption of UV and visible light, and the transmission and separation of photogenerated carriers were also significantly promoted, which was conducive to improving the photocatalytic activity. After treatment in the dark for 30 min, the adsorption of methyl orange by 11% Ni-Al LDHs/LM-TiO₂ reached 55.18%. Under illumination for 30 min, the decolorization rate of methyl orange solution reached 87.54%, and the composites also showed an excellent recycling performance and stability.

Cyclic desorption based efficacy of polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan variant resins for multi heavy-metal removal

The simultaneous removal of Cu, Pb and Fe from water bodies has been targeted in this work with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (low, medium, and high molecular weight) derivative and with cyclic desorption efficacy target. For a varied range of adsorbent loading (0.2-2 g L^-1), initial concentration (187.7-563.1 mg L^-1 for Cu, 5.2-15.6 mg L^-1 for Pb, and 61.85-185.55 mg L^-1 for Fe), and resin contact time (5 to 720 min), batch adsorption-desorption studies were conducted. After first adsorption-desorption cycle, the optimum absorption capacity was 6.85 mg g^-1 for Pb, 243.90 mg g^-1 for Cu, and 87.72 mg g^-1 for Fe for the high molecular weight chitosan grafted polyvinyl alcohol resin (HCSPVA). The alternate kinetic and equilibrium models were analyzed along with the interaction mechanism between metal ions and functional groups. The cyclic desorption studies were carried out with simple eluent systems such as HCl, HNO₃, H₂SO₄, KOH, and NaOH. The experiments revealed that the HCSPVA derivative has been an impressive, reusable, and effective sorbent for the mitigation of Pb, Fe, and Cu in complex wastewater systems. This is due to its easy synthesis, excellent adsorption capacity, quick sorption rate, and remarkable regeneration capabilities.

Utilization of Prepared Nanocellulose as a Biopolymer for Adsorption Kinetics of Cobalt Ions from Wastewater

This study evaluated nanocellulose derived from discarded palm leaves for its ability to remove cobalt ions from industrial wastewater. The process involved extracting cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from date palm leaves through a series of repeated chemical treatments. The study examined the adsorption rates of cobalt ions under various conditions using different techniques. Two equilibrium models, the Langmuir and Freundlich models, were employed, and the Langmuir model was found to be consistent with the experimental data. The maximum amount of cobalt ions adsorbed at room temperature was 5.98 mg/g. Furthermore, several kinetic models were used to gain insight into the adsorption mechanism, including the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models. The pseudo-second-order model provided an accurate description of the adsorption process, while the Elovich equation suggested a chemical reaction between cobalt ions and nanocellulose, involving multiple chemical reactions and mass-transfer processes. Kinetic parameters were critical in interpreting the results, and the study's findings were in agreement with the pseudo-second-order and intraparticle models, indicating general chemical reactions and diffusion resistance.

Sustainable soy protein microsponges for efficient removal of lead (II) from aqueous environments

Protein-based materials recently emerged as good candidates for water cleaning applications, due to the large availability of the constituent material, their biocompatibility and the ease of preparation. In this work, new adsorbent biomaterials were created from Soy Protein Isolate (SPI) in aqueous solution using a simple environmentally friendly procedure. Protein microsponge-like structures were produced and characterized by means of spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy methods. The efficiency of these structures in removing lead (Pb²⁺) ions from aqueous solutions was evaluated by investigating the adsorption mechanisms. The molecular structure and, consequently, the physico-chemical properties of these aggregates can be readily tuned by selecting the pH of the solution during production. In particular, the presence of β-structures typical of amyloids as well as an environment characterized by a lower dielectric constant seem to enhance metal binding affinity revealing that hydrophobicity and water accessibility of the material are key features affecting the adsorption efficiency. Presented results provide new knowledge on how raw plant proteins can be valorised for the production of new biomaterials. This may offer extraordinary opportunities towards the design and production of new tailorable biosorbents which can also be exploited for several cycles of purification with minimal reduction in performance. SYNOPSIS: Innovative, sustainable plant-protein biomaterials with tunable properties are presented as green solution for water purification from lead (II) and the structure-function relationship is discussed.

Preparation of manganese-oxides-coated magnetic microcrystalline cellulose via KMnO4 modification: Improving the counts of the acid groups and adsorption efficiency for Pb(II)

Herein, the manganese-oxides-coated magnetic microcrystalline cellulose (MnOx@Fe₃O₄@MCC) was prepared by coprecipitation and subsequently modified with KMnO₄ solution at room temperature, which was in turn applied for the removal of Pb(II) from wastewater. The adsorption properties of Pb(II) on MnOx@Fe₃O₄@MCC were investigated. The kinetics and isothermal data of Pb(II) were described well by the Pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. At pH = 5, 318 K, the Langmuir maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of MnOx@Fe₃O₄@MCC was 446.43 mg/g, which is higher than many documented bio-based adsorbents. The results of Fourier transform infra-red and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the adsorption mechanisms for Pb(II) mainly involved surface complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic interaction and precipitation. Interestingly, the increased amount of carboxyl group on the surface of microcrystalline cellulose modified by KMnO₄ was one of the important reasons for the high Pb(II) adsorption performance of MnOx@Fe₃O₄@MCC. Furthermore, MnOx@Fe₃O₄@MCC exhibited excellent activity (70.6 %) after five consecutive regeneration cycles, indicating its high stability and reusability. Endorsing to the cost-effectiveness, environmentally friendliness, and reusable nature, MnOx@Fe₃O₄@MCC can be counted as a great alternative contender for the remediation of Pb(II) from industrial wastewater.

Biosorption kinetics of cerium(III) and cobalt(II) from liquid wastes using individual bacterial species isolated from low-level liquid radioactive wastes

The existence of toxic heavy metals in the aquatic environment has emphasized a considerable exigency to develop several multifunctional biosorbents for their removal. Herein, three individual bacterial species of Cellulosimicrobium cellulans, Bacillus coagulans, and Microbacterium testaceum were successfully isolated from low-level liquid radioactive wastes. Their loading capacities towards cerium and cobalt metal ions were inclusivity inspected under variable operational parameters of pH, primary pollutant concentration, interaction time, temperature, stirring speed, and biosorbent dosage. By analyzing the influence of solution pH, concentration, temperature, biosorbent mass, and agitation speed on the biosorption kinetics, the biosorption process confirms pseudo-second-order kinetic, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich equation. Remarkably, the isolated Microbacterium testaceum exhibited high loading capacities reaching 68.1 mg g^-1, and 49.6 mg g^-1 towards Ce(III), and Co(II) ions, respectively, at the initial concentration of 2.8 mM, pH 4.5, and 25 °C. Overall, the isolated bacterial species can potentially be offered up as a promising scavenger for Ce(III) and Co(II) from liquid waste effluents.

Divalent metal ion removal from simulated water using sustainable starch aerogels: Effect of crosslinking agent concentration and sorption conditions

This paper evaluates corn starch aerogels, studying different crosslinking agent (trisodium citrate) concentrations (1:1, 1:1.5, and 1:2) and sorption conditions (contact time, adsorbent weight, and initial concentration) regarding the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) [Cd(II) or Zn(II)] adsorption of the aqueous systems. Besides, other properties of aerogels, such as structural properties, specific surface area, and mechanical performance, were evaluated. For adsorption results, better values were observed in adsorption capacity and efficiency for the initial concentration of 100 ppm. In addition, an adsorption time of 12 h and an adsorbent weight of 3.0 g obtained better results due to the possible balance in this time and the high specific surface area available for Cd(II) adsorption. As for the type of adsorbent, the Aero 1:1.5 sample (intermediate crosslinking agent concentration) obtained better results, possibly due to the high porosity, smaller pore sizes, high pore density, and high specific surface area (198 m²·g^-1). In addition, hydroxyl groups in the starch aerogel removed Cd(II) ions with 30 % adsorption efficiency. Lastly, Aero 1:1.5 obtained a high mechanical strength at compression and a satisfactory compressive modulus. In contrast, starch aerogels did not absorb the Zn(II) ion.

Adsorption of heavy metal onto biomass-derived activated carbon: review

Due to the rapid development of the social economy and the massive increase in population, human beings continue to undertake processing, and commercial manufacturing activities of heavy metals, which has caused serious damage to the environment and human health. Heavy metals lead to serious environmental problems such as soil contamination and water pollution. Human health and the living environment are closely affected by the handling of heavy metals. Researchers must find several simple, economical and practical methods to adsorb heavy metals. Adsorption technology has been recognized as an efficient and economic strategy, exhibiting the advantages of recovering and reusing adsorbents. Biomass-derived activated carbon adsorbents offer large adjustable specific surface area, hierarchically porous structure, strong adsorption capacity, and excellent high economic applicability. This paper focuses on reviewing the preparation methods of biomass-derived activated carbon in the past five years. The application of representative biomass-derived activated carbon in the adsorption of heavy metals preferentially was described to optimize the critical parameters of the activation type of samples and process conditions. The key factors of the adsorbent, the physicochemical properties of the heavy metals, and the adsorption conditions affecting the adsorption of heavy metals are highlighted. In addition, the challenges faced by biomass-derived activated carbon are also discussed.

Green and Superior Adsorbents Derived from Natural Plant Gums for Removal of Contaminants: A Review

The ubiquitous presence of contaminants in water poses a major threat to the safety of ecosystems and human health, and so more materials or technologies are urgently needed to eliminate pollutants. Polymer materials have shown significant advantages over most other adsorption materials in the decontamination of wastewater by virtue of their relatively high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate. In recent years, "green development" has become the focus of global attention, and the environmental friendliness of materials themselves has been concerned. Therefore, natural polymers-derived materials are favored in the purification of wastewater due to their unique advantages of being renewable, low cost and environmentally friendly. Among them, natural plant gums show great potential in the synthesis of environmentally friendly polymer adsorption materials due to their rich sources, diverse structures and properties, as well as their renewable, non-toxic and biocompatible advantages. Natural plant gums can be easily modified by facile derivatization or a graft polymerization reaction to enhance the inherent properties or introduce new functions, thus obtaining new adsorption materials for the efficient purification of wastewater. This paper summarized the research progress on the fabrication of various gums-based adsorbents and their application in the decontamination of different types of pollutants. The general synthesis mechanism of gums-based adsorbents, and the adsorption mechanism of the adsorbent for different types of pollutants were also discussed. This paper was aimed at providing a reference for the design and development of more cost-effective and environmentally friendly water purification materials.

Amine-bilayer-functionalized cellulose-chitosan composite hydrogel for the efficient uptake of hazardous metal cations and catalysis in polluted water

Herein, we represent a novel ecofriendly bilayer-amine group incorporated microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)/chitosan (CS) hydrogel, fabricated via integrating polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) for reliable and effective extraction of copper (Cu²⁺), zinc (Zn²⁺), and nickel (Ni²⁺) ions from effluents. Owing to abundant adsorptive sites, the MCC-PDA-PEI/CS-PDA-PEI hydrogel showed excellent Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Ni²⁺ adsorbabilities of ~434.8, ~277.7, and ~261.8 mg/g, respectively, in a single-ion adsorption system with the adsorption kinetics and isotherm complied with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. In a multi-ion adsorption system, hydrogel removes mixed metal cations with slightly higher selectivity for Cu²⁺. In accordance with X-ray photoelectron and Fourier-transform-infrared spectrometric analyses, a plausible binding mechanism of metal cations on the as-prepared hydrogel was proposed by chelation between hydrogel functional groups and metal ions. In the repetitive adsorption/desorption experiments, the hydrogel retained >40% metal ion adsorption and desorption capacities after four cycles. Furthermore, the Cu²⁺-adsorbing hydrogel could serve as a support for the in situ development of Cu nanoparticles, which showed excellent catalytic performance as demonstrated by the transformation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol. This work provides a novel ecofriendly, reusable, and highly-efficient adsorbent, as well as a biocatalyst for remediation of heavy metal cations and 4-NP polluted effluents.

Recent advances in starch-based magnetic adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from wastewater: A review

Considerable concern exists regarding water contamination by various pollutants, such as conventional pollutants (e.g., heavy metals and organics) and emerging micropollutants (e.g., consumer care products and interfering endocrine-related compounds). Currently, academics are continuously exploring sustainability-related materials and technologies to remove contaminants from wastewater. Magnetic starch-based adsorbents (MSAs) can combine the advantages of starch and magnetic nanoparticles, which exhibit unique critical features such as availability, cost-effectiveness, size, shape, crystallinity, magnetic properties, stability, adsorption properties, and excellent surface properties. However, limited reviews on MSAs' preparations, characterizations, applications, and adsorption mechanisms could be available nowadays. Hence, this review not only focuses on their activation and preparation methods, including physical (e.g., mechanical activation treatment, microwave radiation treatment, sonication, and extrusion), chemical (e.g., grafting, cross-linking, oxidation and esterification), and enzymatic modifications to enhance their adsorption properties, but also offers an all-round state-of-the-art analysis of the full range of its characterization methods, the adsorption of various contaminants, and the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Eventually, this review focuses on the recycling and reclamation performance and highlights the main gaps in the areas where further studies are warranted. We hope that this review will spark an interdisciplinary discussion and bring about a revolution in the applications of MSAs.

Multifunctional Cellulose and Cellulose-Based (Nano) Composite Adsorbents

In recent years, faced with the improvement of environmental quality problems, cellulose and cellulose-based (nano) composites have attracted great attention as adsorbents. In this review article, we first report the recent progress of modification and functionalization of cellulose adsorbents. In addition, the adsorbents produced by the modification and functionalization of carboxymehyl cellulose are also introduced. Moreover, the cellulose-based (nano) composites as adsorbents are reviewed in detail. Finally, the development prospect of cellulose and cellulose-based (nano) composites is studied in the field of the environment. In this review article, a critical comment is given based on our knowledge. It is believed that these biomass adsorbents will play an increasingly important role in the field of the environment.
