Starch phosphate carbamate hydrogel based slow-release urea formulation with good water retentivity

Preparation and characterization of starch carbamate modified natural sodium alginate composite hydrogel blend formulation and its application for slow-release fertilizer

The exploration of environmentally friendly slow-release fertilizer (SRF) based on natural bio-polymers is of great importance in the development of modern agriculture and horticulture. Herein, a novel starch carbamate (SC) modified sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel (SC/SAH) was prepared utilizing as-synthesized SC and natural SA through the cationic ions crosslinking method and ultimately the corresponding slow-release fertilizer (SC/SAH-SRF) was successfully developed by immersing the dried SC/SAH matrix into saturated urea solution. Due to the low gelation temperature and high viscosity of the synthesized SC, the formed SC/SAH exhibits significantly enhanced properties including excellent water absorbency up to 8.02 g/g with considerable repeatability, abundant pore structure and high hydrophilicity compared with the neat SAH and natural starch based hydrogel (NS/SAH). Accordingly, the SC/SAH leads to higher urea loading amount ~ 1.28 g/g. Importantly, the resultant SC/SAH-SRF also shows superior slow-release performance, yielding a cumulative urea release of only 61.6 % within 10 h and almost completely release >16 h in water, what's more, only 58.5 % of the urea releases within 25 days and exceeding 50 days for complete release in soil column assays. The slow-release of urea from SC/SAH-SRF well complies for the first-order kinetics and accomplishes via a non-Fickian diffusion process. Moreover, the pot experiment demonstrates that the SC/SAH-SRF has higher growth promotion role for the maize seedlings than those of others. Consequently, this work provides a novel strategy for preparing environmentally friendly SRF by blending modified starch and hydrogel.

Preparation and characterization of slow-release urea fertilizer encapsulated by a blend of starch derivative and polyvinyl alcohol with desirable biodegradability and availability

In this study, a novel double-layer slow-release fertilizer (SRF) was developed utilizing stearic acid (SA) as a hydrophobic inner coating and a blend of starch phosphate carbamate (abbreviated as SPC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a hydrophilic outer coating (designated as SPCP). The mass ratios of SPC and PVA in the SPCP matrices were systematically optimized by comprehensively checking the water absorbency, water contact angle (WCA), water retention property (WR), and mechanical properties such as percentage elongation at break and tensile strength with FTIR, XRD, EDS, and XPS techniques, etc. Moreover, the optimal SPCP/5:5 demonstrated superior water absorbency with an 80.2 % increase for the total mass compared to natural starch/PVA(NSP), along with desirable water retention capacity in the soil, exhibiting a weight loss of only 48 % over 13 d. Relative to pure urea and SA/NSPU/5:5, SA/SPCPU/5:5 released 50.3 % of its nutrient within 15 h, leading to nearly complete release over 25 h in the aqueous phase, while only 46.6 % of urea was released within 20 d in soil, extending to approximately 30 d. The slow release performance of urea reveals that the diffusion rate of urea release shows a significant decrease with an increase in coating layers. Consequently, this work demonstrated a prospective technology for the exploration of environmentally friendly SRF by integrating biodegradable starch derivatives with other polymers.

Experimental investigation of influence of amide polymer on loess for subgrade

The effects of moisture and drying shrinkage can lead to uneven settlement, cracking, and other diseases in loess subgrade. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of amide polymer (AP) on the permeability, mechanical properties and crack resistance of loess by orthogonal experiments. The basic properties of AP and the permeability, mechanical properties, and dry-wet variation properties of polymer-modified loess were tested, and a scale model verification and simulation analysis were conducted. In this paper, water migration in subgrade is regulated by improving the water sensitivity of loess. By reducing the variation range of subgrade water content, the stress accumulation in subgrade caused by water is weakened. The results show that the curing time and mechanical properties of AP are directly affected by the oxidant and reducing agent, and the mechanical properties of AP are compatible with the characteristics of loess. AP filled the grain gap and reduced the permeability of loess by 34.05-280.83%. The ductility of polymer-modified loess is significantly increased, and the strain of peak strength is increased by 17.21-126.36%. AP can regulate moisture change, reduce the surface tension between particles, and reduce stress concentration. The strength loss rate was reduced by 19.98-51.21% by enhancing the cracking resistance and weakening the strength loss caused by dry and wet cycling. The increase of upper layer moisture content in the scale model of polymer-modified loess subgrade is reduced by 31.38-36.11%.

Design and manufacture of new hybrid hydrogel and superabsorbent polymer for controlled release of fulvic acid based on grafted xanthan gum/gelatin using electron irradiation and its use in fodder corn cultivation

A humic acid-gelatin (HA-Gel) hydrogel, a gallic acid-xanthan gum (GA-XG) hydrogel, a HA-Gel/GA-XG hydrogel, and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) of HA-Gel/GA-XG/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel were synthesized using electron beam irradiation method. The capability of synthesized hydrogels in loading and controlled release of fulvic acid (FA) was studied. The chemical and physical structure of sorbents was confirmed by various analyses. The effect of irradiation dose on mechanical properties, gel percentage, swelling, and absorbency under load (AUL) of the sorbents was investigated. By changing the hydrogel structures into the SAP form, its swelling capacity was increased from 37 to 320 g/g. Both hybrid hydrogel and SAP were reusable for up to 7 cycles. The maximum fertilizer loading capacities for SAP and hybrid hydrogel were 402.1 and, 175.5 mg g-1, respectively. In comparison to hydrogels, the SAP showed a slower FA-release performance. Thus, in soil media, 86 % of FA was released in 15-20 days from the hybrid hydrogel while with the SAP, 81 % of FA was released in 30-35 days. The significant improvement in the growth of fodder corn treated with FA-loaded SAP in the greenhouse media in comparison to the control groups showed the effective performance of the designed SAP, favoring its practical applications.

Bone-inspired (GNEC/HAPAAm) hydrogel with fatigue-resistance for use in underwater robots and highly piezoresistive sensors

A novel bone-inspired fatigue-resistant hydrogel with excellent mechanical and piezoresistive properties was developed, and it exhibited great potential as a load and strain sensor for underwater robotics and daily monitoring. The hydrogel was created by using the high edge density and aspect ratio of graphene nanosheet-embedded carbon (GNEC) nanomaterials to form a three-dimensional conductive network and prevent the expansion of microcracks in the hydrogel system. Multiscale progressive enhancement of the organic hydrogels (micrometer scale) was realized with inorganic graphene nanosheets (nanometer scale). The graphene nanocrystals inside the GNEC film exhibited good electron transport properties, and the increased distances between the graphene nanocrystals inside the GNEC film caused by external forces increased the resistance, so the hydrogel was highly sensitive and suitable for connection to a loop for sensing applications. The hydrogels obtained in this work exhibited excellent mechanical properties, such as tensile properties (strain up to 1685%) and strengths (stresses up to 171 kPa), that make them suitable for use as elastic retraction devices in robotics and provide high sensitivities (150 ms) for daily human monitoring.

A Comprehensive Review of Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogels as Promising Biomaterials

Polysaccharides have emerged as a promising material for hydrogel preparation due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cost. This review focuses on polysaccharide-based hydrogels' synthesis, characterization, and applications. The various synthetic methods used to prepare polysaccharide-based hydrogels are discussed. The characterization techniques are also highlighted to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of polysaccharide-based hydrogels. Finally, the applications of SAPs in various fields are discussed, along with their potential benefits and limitations. Due to environmental concerns, this review shows a growing interest in developing bio-sourced hydrogels made from natural materials such as polysaccharides. SAPs have many beneficial properties, including good mechanical and morphological properties, thermal stability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, abundance, economic viability, and good swelling ability. However, some challenges remain to be overcome, such as limiting the formulation complexity of some SAPs and establishing a general protocol for calculating their water absorption and retention capacity. Furthermore, the development of SAPs requires a multidisciplinary approach and research should focus on improving their synthesis, modification, and characterization as well as exploring their potential applications. Biocompatibility, biodegradation, and the regulatory approval pathway of SAPs should be carefully evaluated to ensure their safety and efficacy.

Facile fabrication of a broad-spectrum starch/poly(α-l-lysine) hydrogel adsorbent with thermal/pH-sensitive IPN structure through simultaneous dual-click strategy

A thermal/pH-sensitive interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel was prepared facilely from starch and poly(α-l-lysine) through amino-anhydride and azide-alkyne double-click reactions in one pot. The synthesized polymers and hydrogels were systematically characterized using different analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and rheometer. The preparation conditions of the IPN hydrogel were optimized via one-factor experiments. Experimental results indicated the IPN hydrogel possessed pH and temperature sensitivity. Effect of different parameters (pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, ionic strength, and temperature) on adsorption behavior were investigated in monocomponent system with cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic Eosin Y (EY) as model pollutants. The results indicated that the adsorption process of the IPN hydrogel for MB and EY followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption data for MB and EY fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating monolayer chemisorption. The good adsorption performance was due to various active functional groups (-COOH, -OH, -NH₂, etc.) in the IPN hydrogel. The strategy described here opens up a new way for preparing IPN hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel exhibits potential application and bright prospects as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

Preparation and properties of Sanxan gel based fertilizer for water retention and slow-release

The advent of gel fertilizers has benefited agriculture and the environment. This study utilized sanxan, a novel polysaccharide, as a carrier and loaded it with urea to create sanxan gel fertilizer (SGF), thus creating a new, effective gel fertilizer. Water retention and sustained release ability of SGF were evaluated, and crop experiments were carried out. The results showed that, SGF that content 2.0 % solution of sanxan and loaded 20 g g^-1 of urea were prepared by heating-cooling method. The water-retention ratio of SGF was attained at 56.4 g g^-1 for 10 h. The urea releases of SGF in water have a more significant persistence than pure urea. In addition, wheat growth was promoted by SGF, compared with pure urea, the biomass of wheat shoot and root increased 27.4 % and 62.2 % during 20 days, respectively. Consequently, SGF has the ability to retain water and slowly release nutrition, which was an ideal carrier for managing water and urea. The SGF developed in this study provides data support and theoretical basis for the application of sanxan gel in agriculture and the environment.

Percutaneous Electroosmosis of Berberine-Loaded Ca2+ Crosslinked Gelatin/Alginate Mixed Hydrogel

Flexible conductive hydrogel has been driven by scientific breakthroughs and offers a wide variety of applications, including sensors, electronic skins, biomedicine, energy storage, etc. Based on the mixed-ion crosslinking method, gelatin and sodium alginate (Gel-Alg) composite hydrogels were successfully prepared using Ca²⁺ crosslinking. The migration behavior of berberine hydrochloride (BBH) in the matrix network structure of Gel-Alg hydrogel with a certain pore size under an electric field was studied, and the transdermal effect of berberine hydrochloride under an electric field was also studied. The experimental results show that Gel-Alg has good flexibility and conductivity, and electrical stimulation can enhance the transdermal effect of drugs. Gel-Alg composite hydrogel may be a new material with potential application value in future biomedical directions.

Evaluation of the Physical Stability of Starch-Based Hydrogels Produced by High-Pressure Processing (HPP)

Starch-based hydrogels are natural polymeric structures with high potential interest for food, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, the physical stability of starch-based hydrogels produced via high-pressure processing (HPP) was evaluated using conventional and accelerated methods. For this purpose, conventional stability measurements, namely swelling power, water activity, texture, and organoleptic properties, as well as microbiological analysis of rice, corn, wheat, and tapioca starch hydrogels, were determined at different time intervals during storage at 20 °C. Additionally, to assess the stability of these structures, accelerated tests based on temperature sweep tests and oscillatory rheological measurements, as well as temperature cycling tests, were performed. The experimental results demonstrated that the physical stability of starch-based HPP hydrogels was interdependently affected by the microorganisms’ action and starch retrogradation, leading to both organoleptic and texture modifications with marked reductions in swelling stability and firmness. It was concluded that tapioca starch hydrogels showed the lowest stability upon storage due to higher incidence of microbial spoilage. Accelerated tests allowed the good stability of HPP hydrogels to be predicted, evidencing good network strength and the ability to withstand temperature changes. Modifications of the rheological properties of corn, rice, and wheat hydrogels were only observed above 39 °C and at stress values 3 to 10 times higher than those necessary to modify commercial hydrogels. Moreover, structural changes to hydrogels after cycling tests were similar to those observed after 90 days of conventional storage. Data obtained in this work can be utilized to design specific storage conditions and product improvements. Moreover, the accelerated methods used in this study provided useful information, allowing the physical stability of starch-based hydrogels to be predicted.
