Green and efficient in-situ biosynthesis of antioxidant and antibacterial bacterial cellulose using wine pomace

Properties and application of antioxidant and antibacterial composite films based on methylcellulose and spine grape pomace fabricated by thermos-compression molding

Methylcellulose (MC)/grape pomace (GP) films, plasticized with either glycerol (GLY) or cinnamon essential oil (CEO), were prepared by thermo-compression molding and characterized. Compared to the GLY-plasticized MC50/GP50 films, a considerable increase in TS and YM values of CEO-plasticized films was observed, rising from 9.66 to 30.05 MPa, 762 to 1631 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the water vapor barrier, surface hydrophobic properties, and antioxidant/antibacterial activities of CEO-plasticized films remarkedly improved with increasing CEO content from 5 to 15% w/w. From scanning electron microscopy, phase separation between GP and the MC/GLY mixture were evident for GLY-plasticized MC/GP films. On the other hand, the CEO-plasticized films showed compact morphologies, attributable to the formation of hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interaction. Preliminary shelf-life study on showed that fresh chicken wrapped with the CEO-plasticized MC/GP films exhibited lower TVB-N, TBARS, and TVC values than the unwrapped control samples, during 7 d storage at 4 °C.

Enhanced bacterial cellulose production by Komagataeibacter species and Hibiscus sabdariffa herbal tea

This study proposed Hibiscus sabdariffa as a novel substrate for BC production with Komagataeibacter species and their consortia. K. intermedius is found as the most efficient producer (5.98 g/L BC, 3.56 × 10-2 g-1 h-1 productivity rate) following K. maltaceti (4.44 g/L BC, 2.64 × 10-2 g-1 h-1 productivity rate) and K. nataicola (3.67 g/L BC, 2.18 × 10-2 g-1 h-1 productivity rate). Whereas agitation increased BC production with K. nataicola (1.22-fold, 4.49 g/L BC), K. maltaceti (1.24-fold, 5.52 g/L BC) and K. intermedius (1.27-fold, 7.63 g/L BC), irregular shaped BC was obtained. This could be a novel result as Komagataeibacter consortia increased BC production by 1.17-2.01-fold compared to monocultures resulting as 8.11 g/L BC through the co-cultivation of K. maltaceti-K. intermedius. Maximum increase was found to be 1.75-fold (1.79-fold WHC), occurring with monoculture of K. maltaceti, while 1.94-fold (1.26-fold WHC) with K. maltaceti-K. intermedius consortium when H. sabdariffa-based media compared Hestrin-Schramm media. Based on these results, this could be a novel result as H. sabdariffa-based media may replace the use of HS media in BC production by means of a bioactive content-rich plant and obtaining 3-D ultrafine porous structure with high thermal resistant (∼460-500 °C) BC with mono and co-cultivation of Komagataeibacter species to be used in industrial area.

Characterization of multilayer bacterial cellulose-chitosan films loaded with grape bagasse antioxidant extract: Insights into spectral and water properties, microstructure, and antioxidant activity

This work explores the development and characterization of composite multilayer films comprising bacterial cellulose (BC) and chitosan enriched with antioxidant compounds from grape bagasse extract (GE) and glycerol. SEM images revealed a compact structure with successful interactions between BC and chitosan, confirmed by FT-IR analysis. Equilibrium moisture content, water vapor permeability (WVP), swollen capacity, and solubility were systematically investigated, unveiling the influence of glycerol and GE concentrations. Moisture content increased with elevated glycerol and GE levels, attributed to their hydrophilic nature. WVP rose with higher concentrations of hydrophilic compounds, affecting the films' permeability. Swollen capacity decreased, and solubility increased with the addition of GE and glycerol, indicating a more compact film structure. The incorporation of GE conferred antioxidant properties to the films, as evidenced by DPPH and ABTS+ assays, and Total Phenolic Content (TPC) determination. TPC values varied from 0 to 1.75 mg GAE/g dried film, depending on GE. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) highlighted polymeric associations, and UV-Vis spectra demonstrated enhanced UV-blocking properties. Overall, these multilayer films offer promising applications in food packaging, leveraging natural antioxidant sources for an enhanced functionality.

Natural polyphenols for drug delivery and tissue engineering construction: A review

Polyphenols, natural compounds rich in phenolic structures, are gaining prominence due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anticancer properties, making them valuable in biomedical applications. Through covalent and noncovalent interactions, polyphenols can bind to biomaterials, enhancing their performance and compensating for their shortcomings. Such polyphenol-based biomaterials not only increase the efficacy of polyphenols but also improve drug stability, control release kinetics, and boost the therapeutic effects of drugs. They offer the potential for targeted drug delivery, reducing off-target impacts and enhancing therapeutic outcomes. In tissue engineering, polyphenols promote cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, thus aiding in the formation of functional tissues. Additionally, they offer excellent biocompatibility and mechanical strength, essential in designing scaffolds. This review explores the significant roles of polyphenols in tissue engineering and drug delivery, emphasizing their potential in advancing biomedical research and healthcare.

An overview of bio-cellulose derived materials for catalytic water treatment

Bio-cellulose derived materials (BCM) exhibit distinct structural and morphologic properties, which make them suitable for catalytic environmental remediation. In the domain of water treatment, the prospects for BCM remain bright, offering new possibilities for the development of advanced materials with low environmental impact. Research on BCM as catalysts or catalyst immobilization platforms for water treatment is still limited, mostly using laboratory-grown biomaterials for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes. BCM production costs can be significant, which can hinder its application. Thus, cost-effective alternatives using waste materials as substrates for BCM culture media are highly desirable to optimize production, while also decreasing food waste. Moreover, advances in biotechnology can enhance BCM production, tailoring its properties to meet specific requirements. Hybrid catalytic BCM composites can be easily developed, due to the straightforward functionalization of the biomaterial's network, promoting the efficiency of a variety of catalytic systems. Still considering the intrinsic features of the biomaterial, membrane development and application pose as an opportunity for continuous flow evaluations, facilitating long-term usage and reusability. Nevertheless, there are still challenges regarding catalytic BCM for water treatment (i.e., cost-effectiveness, scaling up, and consistent performance in diverse treatment scenarios). Addressing these aspects can lead to innovative environmental remediation options.

Bacterial cellulose/gum Arabic composite production by in-situ modification from lavender residue hydrolysate

In this study, bacterial cellulose/gum Arabic composite (BC/GA) was synthesized by in-situ modification from lavender residue hydrolysate for the first time. The in-situ modification with GA adding showed great beneficial effect for BC/GA synthesis. Both the product (BC or BC/GA) yield and the product (BC or BC/GA) production per sugars consumption increased greatly by the in-situ modification when compared with the fermentation without GA adding (2.90 g/L vs. 0.91 g/L, and 0.461 g/g vs. 0.138 g/g). It is hypothesized that the combination of BC and GA is the main mechanism for the beneficial effect of the in-situ modification, and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images confirmed this hypothesis. GA adding showed little effect on the rheological properties of lavender residue hydrolysate, and this environment was suitable for the combination of BC and GA. The in-situ modification had an obvious influence on the crystallinity index and the thermal stability of BC/GA, but affected little on its functional groups and cellulose structural framework. Besides BC/GA synthesis and structure, the in-situ modification could also alter the texture properties of BC/GA. Overall, this study can offer some useful information for the biochemical conversion from green and cost-effective lavender residue hydrolysate to attractive biomaterial BC/GA.

Acetic acid bacteria in agro-wastes: from cheese whey and olive mill wastewater to cellulose

In this study, cheese whey and olive mill wastewater were investigated as potential feedstocks for producing bacterial cellulose by using acetic acid bacteria strains. Organic acids and phenolic compounds composition were assayed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate modifications in bacterial cellulose chemical and morphological structure. Cheese whey was the most efficient feedstock in terms of bacterial cellulose yield (0.300 g of bacterial cellulose/gram of carbon source consumed). Bacterial cellulose produced in olive mill wastewater presented a more well-defined network compared to pellicles produced in cheese whey, resulting in a smaller fiber diameter in most cases. The analysis of bacterial cellulose chemical structure highlighted the presence of different chemical bonds likely to be caused by the adsorption of olive mill wastewater and cheese whey components. The crystallinity ranged from 45.72 to 80.82%. The acetic acid bacteria strains used in this study were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, allowing to assign them to Komagataeibacter xylinus and Komagataeibacter rhaeticus species. This study proves the suitability to perform sustainable bioprocesses for producing bacterial cellulose, combining the valorisation of agro-wastes with microbial conversions carried out by acetic acid bacteria. The high versatility in terms of yield, morphology, and fiber diameters obtained in cheese whey and olive mill wastewater contribute to set up fundamental criteria for developing customized bioprocesses depending on the final use of the bacterial cellulose. Biosorption of bioactive compounds in bacterial nanocellulose: Mechanisms and physical-chemical properties

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biomaterial produced by Gluconacetobacter xylinus, with wide applicability in different areas, such as biomedical, pharmaceutical, and food. BC production is usually carried out in a medium containing phenolic compounds (PC), such as teas, however, the purification process leads to the loss of such bioactive. Thus, the innovation of this research consists of the reincorporation of PC after the purification of the BC matrices through the biosorption process. In this context, the effects of the biosorption process in BC were evaluated to maximize the incorporation of phenolic compounds from a ternary mixture of hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), white tea (Camellia sinensis), and grape pomace (Vitis labrusca). The biosorbed membrane (BC-Bio) showed a great concentration of total phenolic compounds (TPC = 64.89 mg L^-1) and high antioxidant capacity through different assays (FRAP: 130.7 mg L^-1, DPPH: 83.4 mg L^-1, ABTS: 158.6 mg L^-1, TBARS: 234.2 mg L^-1). The physical tests also indicated that the biosorbed membrane presented high water absorption capacity, thermal stability, low permeability to water vapor and improved mechanical properties compared to BC-control. These results index that the biosorption of phenolic compounds in BC efficiently increases bioactive content and improves physical membrane characteristics. Also, PC release in a buffered solution suggests that BC-Bio can be used as a polyphenol delivery system. Therefore, BC-Bio is a polymer with wide application in different industrial segments.

Microbial Production of Bacterial Cellulose Using Chestnut Shell Hydrolysates by Gluconacetobacter xylinus ATCC 53524

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is gaining attention as a carbon-neutral alternative to plant cellulose, and as a means to prevent deforestation and achieve a carbon-neutral society. However, the high cost of fermentation media for BC production is a barrier to its industrialization. In this study, chestnut shell (CS) hydrolysates were used as a carbon source for the BC-producing bacteria strain, Gluconacetobacter xylinus ATCC 53524. To evaluate the suitability of the CS hydrolysates, major inhibitors in the hydrolysates were analyzed, and BC production was profiled during fermentation. CS hydrolysates (40 g glucose/l) contained 1.9 g/l acetic acid when applied directly to the main medium. As a result, the BC concentration at 96 h using the control group and CS hydrolysates was 12.5 g/l and 16.7 g/l, respectively (1.3-fold improved). In addition, the surface morphology of BC derived from CS hydrolysates revealed more densely packed nanofibrils than the control group. In the microbial BC production using CS, the hydrolysate had no inhibitory effect during fermentation, suggesting it is a suitable feedstock for a sustainable and eco-friendly biorefinery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to valorize CS by utilizing it in BC production.

Polishing of painting process effluents through adsorption with biochar from winemaking residues

A real industrial effluent from the pre-treatment and painting processes was polished through adsorption using alternative biochar derived from grape pomace wastes. The biochar was produced in a pilot-scale plant from composted grape pomace. Biochar showed an equilibrium between acidic and basic groups on the surface. The presence of irregular cavities in the structure and mesopores was confirmed by analyzing N₂ physisorption and SEM. Concerning the effluent, Ni and Zn were the main problematic elements. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of Ni and Zn from the effluent using the biochar could be represented by the Henry, pseudo-first-order, and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. Adsorption equilibrium was reached within 60 min for Ni and Zn present in the real effluent. Besides, the adsorption process was endothermic, favorable, and spontaneous. These results demonstrate that Zn and Ni metals were successfully removed from the industrial effluent, presenting final concentration values within the limit of legislation for effluent disposal in agricultural soil.
