Abstract
The substantial waste of perishable foods during transportation significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, intensifying the climate crisis. To mitigate the rapid spoilage of fruits, an eco-friendly bilayer film was developed using natural egg white (EW), amylose (Am), and tannic acid (TA). The EW/Am-TA bilayer film features a primary layer of amphiphilic EW, ensuring a uniform coating on hydrophobic fruit surfaces, and a secondary layer composed of Am and TA, imparting notable tensile strength (5.3 ± 0.5 MPa) and elongation at break (28.5 ± 4.1 %). This bilayer film effectively shields fruits from UV-B and UV-C radiation (~0 % transmittance at 280 and 330 nm) and exhibits antioxidant and antibacterial properties due to the presence of TA. Fruits such as bananas, avocados, and cherry tomatoes, when dip-coated with the optimized EW/Am-TA bilayer, maintained their freshness, color, weight, and texture for up to seven days, demonstrating the effectiveness of this bilayer coating in food preservation. The natural materials in the coated film are edible and can be safely removed with tap water at room temperature in <10 s, posing no food safety risks. Thus, the proposed bilayer coating presents a significant solution to the global problem of food waste.

Abstract
Green (Penicillium digitatum) mold can severely endanger the citrus fruits production and quality. Targeting the protection of lemon fruits from green mold infestations with nanobiotechnology approach, the fenugreek seed mucilage (FM) was extracted and exploited for biosynthesis of selenium (SeNPs) nanoparticles; their nanocomposites (NCs) with chitosan (CT) was constructed and employed as antifungal materials and edible coating (ECs) to protect lemon fruits against green mold. The nanoparticles formation and conjugations were verified by infrared (FTIR) analysis and electron microscopy. The FM-synthesized SeNPs had particles average of 8.35 nm, were the NCs of them with CT had size mean of 49.33 nm and charged with +22.8 mV. The CT/FM/SeNPs composite exhibited superior antifungal actions toward P. digitatum isolates, up to 32.2 mm inhibition diameter and 12.5 mg/mL inhibitory concentration, which exceeded the actions of imazilil. The microscopic screening of exposed P. digitatum to NCs clarified their mycelial destructive action within 30 h. The coating of infected lemons with fabricated NCs led to complete elimination of green mold development after 10 days of coating, without any infestation remarks. The innovative fabrication of NCs from CT/FM/SeNPs is strongly suggested to protect citrus crops from green mold and preserve fruits quality.

Abstract
Edible mushrooms are prone to deteriorate during storage. A Single chitosan film or coating has limitations in preservation. Therefore, this article focused on the improvement of modified chitosan-based films and coatings on properties related to storage quality of edible mushrooms (e.g.: safety, barrier, mechanical, antioxidant and antibacterial properties). Besides, the application of chitosan-based materials in the preservation of mushrooms was also discussed. The modified chitosan film and coating can slow down the respiration of mushrooms, inhibit the growth of microorganisms, protect antioxidant compositions, and regulate the activity of related enzymes, thus improving the quality and prolonging the shelf life of mushrooms. Meanwhile, the added ingredients improve the water and gas barrier properties of chitosan through volume and group occupation, and reduce the light transmittance of chitosan through light transmission, scattering and absorption. Essential oils and polyphenolic compounds had a better enhancement of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of chitosan.

Abstract
Walnuts play a positive role in human health due to their large amounts of unsaturated fatty acids, whereas lipid oxidation can easily occur during storage. Herein, three natural antioxidants (epicatechin, sesamol, and myricetin) were added to the composite film cross-linked with chitosan and soy protein peptide, and the antioxidant film appropriate for the preservation of walnut kernels from Juglans sigillata was screened to improve the storage quality of walnuts. The results showed that three antioxidant films could all enhance the storage performance of walnut kernels, with sesamol being the best. The characterization of antioxidant film cross-linked with chitosan and soy protein peptide containing sesamol (C/S-ses film) revealed that the composite film improved the slow release and stability of sesamol; in addition, the presence of sesamol could effectively reduce the light transmittance and water vapor permeability of the composite film, together with significantly enhancing the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, resulting in an effective prolongation of the storage period of walnut kernels. These findings indicated that C/S-ses possess excellent potential for retarding the oxidative rancidity of unsaturated fatty acids and will provide an effective strategy for the preservation of walnut kernels.

Abstract
The continuous development of sustainable food-active packaging materials and practices with high performance is a response to the increasing challenges posed by microbial food safety and environmental contamination. In this study, a multifunctional bio-nanocomposite composed primarily of chitosan, cellulose nanomaterials and carvacrol was proposed as a conformal coating for fruit preservation. The coating exhibits excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activities owing to the incorporation of the carvacrol. The inhibition rate of the coating on E. coli and S. aureus is enhanced by 57.13 % and 62.18 %, respectively. And its antioxidant activities is also improved by 77.45 %. In addition, the oxygen permeability (OP) and water vapor permeability (WVP) of this CS/CNC coating are significantly lowered by 67 % and 46 %, respectively, comparing with the CS coating. The coating exhibited excellent biosafety and cytocompatibility because of over 90 % of the HepG2 cells remained alive in each concentration of the coating after 24 h incubation. Additionally, the efficacy of the coating in prolonging the freshness and visual appeal of perishable fruits is substantiated by the experiment involving two fruit specimens. Furthermore, the coating's ease of production, ingestibility, washability, and utilization of cost-effective and easily accessible biomaterials, including renewable waste materials, indicate its potential as a viable economic substitute for commercially accessible fruit coatings.

Abstract
Sustainable agriculture plays a crucial role in meeting the growing global demand for food while minimizing adverse environmental impacts from the overuse of synthetic pesticides and conventional fertilizers. In this context, renewable biopolymers being more sustainable offer a viable solution to improve agricultural sustainability and production. Nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers are among these innovative biopolymers that are much sought after for their unique features. These biomaterials have complex hierarchical structures, great stability, adjustable mechanical strength, stimuli-responsiveness, and self-healing attributes. Functional molecules may be added to their flexible structure, for enabling novel agricultural uses. This overview scrutinizes how nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers may radically alter farming practices and solve lingering problems in agricultural sector namely improve agricultural production, soil health, and resource efficiency. Controlled bioactive ingredient released from biopolymers allows the tailored administration of agrochemicals, bioactive agents, and biostimulators as they enhance nutrient absorption, moisture retention, and root growth. Nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers may protect crops by appending antimicrobials and biosensing entities while their eco-friendliness supports sustainable agriculture. Despite their potential, further studies are warranted to understand and optimize their usage in agricultural domain. This effort seeks to bridge the knowledge gap by investigating their applications, challenges, and future prospects in the agricultural sector. Through experimental investigations and theoretical modeling, this overview aims to provide valuable insights into the practical implementation and optimization of supramolecular biopolymers in sustainable agriculture, ultimately contributing to the development of innovative and eco-friendly solutions to enhance agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

Abstract
Lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNF) obtained from agricultural waste are potential candidates for enhancing composite materials because of their excellent mechanical properties, abundant groups and high biocompatibility. However, the application of LCNF has received limited attention to date from researchers in the healthcare field. Herein, based on the bifunctional group (carboxyl and aldehyde groups) modified LCNF (DCLCNF) and chitosan (CS), we developed a multifunctional bio-based hydrogel (CS-DCLCNF). The addition of lignin-containing DCLCNF strengthened the internal crosslinking and the intermolecular interaction of hydrogels, and the presence of lignin and carboxyl groups increased the mechanical strength of the hydrogel and the adsorption of aromatic drugs. Results revealed that the hydrogels exhibited self-healing, injectable, and high swelling rates. The hydrogels had favorable mechanical strength (G'max of ~16.60 kPa), and the maximum compressive stress was 24 kPa. Moreover, the entire tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) release process was slow and pH-responsive, because of the rich noncovalent and π-π interactions between DCLCNF and TH. The hydrogels also exhibited excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial properties. Notably, the wound healing experiment showed that the hydrogels were beneficial in accelerating wounds healing, which could heal completely in 13 days. Therefore, CS-DCLCNF hydrogels may have promising applications in drug delivery for wound healing.

Abstract
Chitosan is considered the second most ubiquitous polysaccharide next to cellulose. It has gained prominence in various industries including biomedicine, textile, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and notably, the food industry over the last few decades. The polymer's continual attention within the food industry can be attributed to the increasing popularity of greener means of packaging and demand for foods incorporated with natural alternatives instead of synthetic additives. Its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and film-forming abilities reinforced by the polymer's biocompatible, biodegradable, and nontoxic nature have fostered its usage in food packaging and preservation. Microbial activity and lipid oxidation significantly influence the shelf-life of meat, resulting in unfavorable changes in nutritional and sensory properties during storage. In this review, the scientific studies published in recent years regarding potential applications of chitosan in meat products; and their effects on shelf-life extension and sensory properties are discussed. The utilization of chitosan in the form of films, coatings, and additives in meat products has supported the extension of shelf-life while inducing a positive impact on their organoleptic properties. The nature of chitosan and its compatibility with various materials make it an ideal biopolymer to be used in novel arenas of food technology.

Abstract
A chitosan-based nanocomposite film (CSC) was developed by mixing chitosan (CS, 2 %, v/v) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs, 500 μg∙mL-1) synthesized using Alpinia officinarum extract for the safe storage of mango fruit. The effects of CuO NPs on the morphological, mechanical, thermal, physical and antifungal properties of the CS films and postharvest quality of mango fruit were determined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed that CuO NPs were uniformly dispersed into the CS matrix. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) profiles showed that intermolecular H-bondings occurred between CS and CuO NPs, accompanied by decreased crystallinity and increased amorphous structure. In comparison to the pure CS film, addition of CuO NPs obviously improved the morphological, mechanical, thermal, physical and antifungal properties of CSC film. CSC coating treatment obviously delayed the fruit decay and yellowing, as well as reduced losses of weight and firmness of mango (Mangifera indica L.) fruit during the storage, when compared with the control and CS coating treatment. Meanwhile, it significantly decreased the respiration rate and ethylene generation and maintained high level of ascorbic acid (AsA), titratable acid (TA) and soluble sugar content (SSC) of the fruit during the storage. Notably, Cu presented in the CSC film was restrained to the peel, indicating that the CSC coated mango fruit had good edible safety. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed that CSC coating played a positive role in mango preservation. Therefore, CSC coating can be considered a potential application for successfully controlling of postharvest disease and prolonging the shelf life for mango fruit.

Abstract
Fruit rotting at the postharvest stage severely limits their marketing supply chains and shelf-life. Thus, developing a green and cost-effective approach to extend the shelf-life of perishable foods is highly desired. In this study, inspired by the mussel-adhesion strategy, a multifunctional fruit coating material has been developed using a quaternized catechol-functionalized chitosan (CQ-CS) grafted with 2, 3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and 3, 4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde. The as-prepared CQ-CS coating exhibited excellent mechanical properties, universal surface adhesion abilities, antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities without any potential toxicity effects. Using strawberry and banana as model fruits, we showed that the CQ-CS coating could effectively maintain the fruit's firmness and color, decrease the weight loss rate, and prevent microbial growth, thus finally extending their shelf- life when compared to uncoated samples, indicating the universal application of the as-prepared CQ-CS coating. These findings demonstrated that this novel conformal coating of CQ-CS has great potential for fruit preservation in the food industry.

Abstract
The application of polysaccharide-based coatings to prolong the shelf-life of fruits has attracted increasing attention. This study aims to develop a fruit coating comprising locust bean gum/carboxycellulose nanocrystals/ZnO (LCZ) blended with bayberry tannins (BT). The results revealed a significant increase from 4.89% and 11.04% to 29.92% and 45.01% in the free radical scavenging rates of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-di-[3-ethylbenzthiazthiazoline sulfonate] with the percentage of BT increasing from 0% to 5%, respectively. At a 5% of BT, the antibacterial activity against both E.coli and S. aureus exceeded 90% while simultaneously achieving excellent UV shielding (transmittance of 380-200 nm ≤ 0.19%). After 3 days of storage, uncoated bananas showed signs of browning, and their titratable acid and vitamin C (Vc) contents decreased from 0.57% to 0.30% and from 7.37 mg/100 g to 4.77 mg/100 g, respectively. However, bananas coated with LCZ containing 3% BT not only exhibited a better appearance, but also possessed higher titratable acid (0.44%) and Vc content (5.31 mg/100 g). This study provides a sustainable and multifunctional coating for fruit preservation.

Abstract
Background: According to recent studies, tens of millions of tons of fruit are wasted each year in Europe in primary production and home/service consumption. Among fruits, berries are most critical because they have a shorter shelf life and a softer, more delicate, and often edible skin. Curcumin is a natural polyphenolic compound extracted from the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) which exhibits antioxidant, photophysical, and antimicrobial properties that can be further enhanced by photodynamic inactivation of pathogens when irradiated with blue or ultraviolet light. Materials and methods: Multiple experiments were performed in which berry samples were sprayed with a complex of β-cyclodextrin containing 0.5 or 1 mg/mL of curcumin. Photodynamic inactivation was induced by irradiation with blue LED light. Antimicrobial effectiveness was assessed with microbiological assays. The expected effects of oxidation, curcumin solution deterioration, and alteration of the volatile compounds were investigated as well. Results: The treatment with photoactivated curcumin solutions reduced the bacterial load (3.1 vs. 2.5 colony forming units/mL (UFC/ml) in the control and treated groups; p-value = 0.01), without altering the fruit organoleptic and antioxidant properties. Conclusions: The explored method is a promising approach to extend berries' shelf life in an easy and green way. However, further investigations of the preservation and general properties of treated berries are still needed.

Abstract
Polysaccharide films containing protein additives have good application prospects in agriculture and food field. However, interfacial incompatibility between hydrophobic proteins and hydrophilic polymers remains a major technical challenge. In this work, the interfacial compatibility between hydrophobic zein and hydrophilic chitosan (CS) is improved by the chemical crosslinking between zinc ions of curcumin-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Cur-ZIF-8) with CS and zein. With the improvement of interface compatibility, the results show that the elongation at break and O2 barrier property of synthesized Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein are 9.2 and 1.5 times higher than CS/Zein, respectively. And the Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein exhibits superior antibacterial and antioxidant properties as well. Importantly, Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein can also be used as an intelligent-responsive release platform for curcumin. As a result, Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein can keep the freshness and appearance of litchi at least 8 days longer than that of CS/Zein. Therefore, this study provides a novel method to improve the interfacial compatibility between hydrophobic proteins and hydrophilic polymers, and is expected to expand the application of protein/polymer composites in agriculture and food field.
