Adsorptive removal of crystal violet from wastewater using sodium alginate-gelatin-montmorillonite ternary composite microbeads

A Double Network Composite Hydrogel with Self-Regulating Cu2+/Luteolin Release and Mechanical Modulation for Enhanced Wound Healing

Designing adaptive and smart hydrogel wound dressings to meet specific needs across different stages of wound healing is crucial. Here, we present a composite hydrogel, GSC/PBE@Lut, that offers self-regulating release of cupric ions and luteolin and modulates mechanical properties to promote chronic wound healing. The double network hydrogel, GSC, is fabricated through photo-cross-linking of gelatin methacrylate, followed by Cu2+-alginate coordination cross-linking. On one hand, GSC allows for rapid Cu2+ release to eliminate bacteria in the acidic pH environment during inflammation and reduces the hydrogel's mechanical strength to minimize tissue trauma during early dressing changes. On the other hand, GSC enables slow Cu2+ release during the proliferation stage, promoting angiogenesis and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the inclusion of pH- and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive luteolin nanoparticles (PBE@Lut) in the hydrogel matrix allows for controlled release of luteolin, offering antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and promoting anti-inflammatory macrophage polarization. In a murine model of Staphylococcus aureus infected wounds, GSC/PBE@Lut demonstrates exceptional therapeutic benefits in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, angiogenic, and tissue regeneration. Overall, our results suggest that smart hydrogels with controlled bioactive agent release and mechanical modulation present a promising solution for treating chronic wounds.

Recycled gold-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet

In this study, gold-reduced graphene oxide (Au@rGO) nanocomposite has been synthesized by repurposing electronic waste and dry batteries. This innovative approach involved utilizing the graphite rod from dry batteries to produce reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which was subsequently modified through the incorporation of gold nanoparticles obtained from recycled electronic waste. This methodology marks a significant breakthrough in electronic waste recycling, presenting a cost-effective and sustainable means of creating novel nanocomposites for applications in photocatalysis and adsorption, particularly in the removal of crystal violet (CV) from aqueous media. The synthesized Au@rGO nanocomposite was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersed X-ray, and N2 adsorption/desorption. Parameters that affect the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of CV dye have been studied in detail. The optimal conditions for CV adsorption and photocatalytic degradation were pH of 10, equilibrium time of 30 min, CV concentration of 10 mg/L and adsorbent dosage of 40 mg. Furthermore, the isotherm and kinetics of CV removal were also studied. The removal of CV dye using adsorption and photocatalytic degradation techniques reached 95% and 99%, respectively. Consequently, the results showed that photocatalytic degradation of CV dye onto the mesoporous Au@rGO nanocomposite is more proper way than the adsorption technique for removing the CV dye from aqueous media. The designed photocatalyst has high efficiency and it can be reused and activated several times so it can be used in real water treatment applications.

Sponge-like biodegradable polypyrrole-modified biopolymers for selective adsorption of basic red 46 and crystal violet dyes from single and binary component systems

Recently, several researchers have been trying to reduce the ecological effects of water pollution by considering the use of biodegradable materials that prevent the generation of secondary pollution in our environment and enable water reuse. Here, new biodegradable hydrogels based on alginate (Alg), gelatin (Gel) and polypyrrole (PPy) were successfully implemented to remove two known highly toxic cationic dyes from wastewater. The design process was performed in two steps: in-situ polymerization of polypyrrole within the Alg/Gel mixture, followed by hydrogel formation. Biocomposites showed promising efficacy for the removal of both basic red 46 (BR46) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from real and demineralized water samples. However, Alg-Gel-PPy hydrogel showed better selectivity for BR46 than for CV as compared to the pristine Alg-Gel hydrogel. Adsorption of both pollutants on biocomposite hydrogel beads followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic models. Besides, the highest adsorption capacities (125 mg g-1 for BR46 and 88.5 mg g-1 for CV) were obtained for the Alg-Gel-PPy hydrogel, compared with those determined for PPy-free hydrogel (103.09 mg g-1 for BR46 and 86.96 mg g-1 for CV) and remained at a satisfactory level for five adsorption-desorption cycles. Finally, the obtained hydrogels showed excellent biodegradability by natural soil microorganisms, with 91 % decomposition.

Study on adsorption of salicylic acid and sulfosalicylic acid by MOF-sodium alginate gel beads obtained in a green way

A composite (ZS-UiO-66-NH2) zirconium crosslinked sodium alginate gel beads (ZS)-metal-organic skeleton (UiO-66-NH2) were prepared in this study through in-situ growth under simple, green and mild conditions for removal of the salicylic acid (SA) and sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) from water. The physicochemical properties of ZS-UiO-66-NH2 were characterized using various analytical methods. The influencing factors in the adsorption process including pH of solution, amount of adsorbent, coexisting ions, adsorption time, reaction temperature and equilibrium concentration of SA/SSA were performed in batch adsorption. The experimental results indicated that ZS-UiO-66-NH2 had high stability and could achieve efficient adsorption of SA/SSA in broad pH range (2-9) and salinity (0-0.2 mol·L-1). SA and SSA adsorbed on the composite at 293 K reached high values of 193 and 167 mg·g-1 from Langmuir model, respectively. Kinetic and isotherm studies demonstrated that the adsorption processes were mainly multilayer heterogeneous chemisorption. Thermodynamic data manifested that the two processes were exothermic and spontaneous with increasing entropy. ZS-UiO-66-NH2 can effectively remove SA/SSA from simulated wastewater under different pH and can be reused after elution with a NaHCO3 solution (5 mmol·L-1). The ZS-UiO-66-NH2 composite has great potential for removing SA/SSA from actual water bodies.

Activated Carbon-Incorporated Tragacanth Gum Hydrogel Biocomposite: A Promising Adsorbent for Crystal Violet Dye Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Biomaterials-based adsorbents have emerged as a sustainable and promising solution for water purification, owing to their eco-friendly nature and remarkable adsorption capacities. In this study, a biocomposite hydrogel was prepared by the incorporation of activated carbon derived from pomegranate peels (PPAC) in tragacanth gum (TG). The hydrogel biocomposite (PPAC/TG) showed a porous structure, a negative surface charge at a pH of more than 4.9, and good stability in aqueous media. The adsorption properties of the PPAC/TG hydrogel biocomposite were assessed for the removal of crystal violet dye (CV) from aqueous solutions using a batch adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption data followed the Sips isotherm model, as supported by the calculated R2 (>0.99), r-χ2 (<64), and standard error values (<16). According to the Sips model, the maximum values of the adsorption capacity of PPAC/TG were 455.61, 470.86, and 477.37 mg/g at temperatures of 25, 30, and 35 °C, respectively. The adsorption kinetic of CV onto the PPAC/TG hydrogel biocomposite was well described by the pseudo-second-order model with R2 values more than 0.999 and r-χ2 values less than 12. Thermodynamic studies confirmed that the CV dye adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the prepared hydrogel exhibited excellent reusability, retaining its adsorption capacity even after being used more than five times. Overall, this study concludes that the prepared PPAC/TG exhibited a significant adsorption capacity for cationic dyes, indicating its potential as an effective and eco-friendly adsorbent for water treatment.

Adsorptive exclusion of crystal violet dye using barium encapsulated alginate/carbon composites: characterization and adsorption modeling studies

The present study is devoted to the removal of crystal violet dye using the synthesized barium alginate/carbon composites abbreviated as BA (barium alginate), BAAC (barium alginate/activated carbon), BASC (barium alginate/starch carbon), and BASSC (barium alginate/starch carbon modified with CTAB). The adsorptive removal of crystal violet as a function of contact time, pH of solution, composite dose, initial dye concentration, and temperature was studied. The uptake of crystal violet (CV) dye for the composites was recorded in the range of 36 mg g-1 to 50 mg g-1 at pH 8.03 ± 0.03 for an equilibrium time of 120 min. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms in compliance with the CV sorption onto BA/carbon composites corroborated the utmost fit of pseudo-second-order and Freundlich isotherm models, respectively. The recycling process was achieved using the barium alginate-treated bead carbons for different initial CV dye concentrations of 10-30 mg L-1 with a scope of zero disposal. The practicability of BA/carbon composites in a groundwater sample spiked with 30 mg L-1 of CV was successfully achieved with a removal efficiency of about 65-74%. Characterization studies for the composites using FTIR, SEM (with EDS), XRD, TGA, and BET were carried out and discussed in the paper.

Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles loaded guava leaves powder impregnated into calcium alginate hydrogel beads (Fe3O4-GLP@CAB) for efficient removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous environment: Synthesis, characterization, and its adsorption performance

In the present work, a novel Fe3O4-GLP@CAB was successfully synthesized via a co-precipitation procedure and applied for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous environment. The structural and physicochemical characteristics of the as-prepared materials were explored using a variety of characterization methods, including pHPZC, XRD, VSM, FE-SEM/EDX, BJH/BET, and FTIR. The effects of several experimental factors on the uptake of MB using Fe3O4-GLP@CAB were examined through batch experiments. The highest MB dye removal efficiency of Fe3O4-GLP@CAB was obtained to be 95.2 % at pH 10.0. Adsorption equilibrium isotherm data at different temperatures showed an excellent agreement with the Langmuir model. The adsorption uptake of MB onto Fe3O4-GLP@CAB was determined as 136.7 mg/g at 298 K. The kinetic data were well-fitted by the pseudo-first-order model, indicating that physisorption mainly controlled it. Several thermodynamic variables derived from adsorption data, like as ΔGo, ΔSo, ΔHo, and Ea, accounted for a favourable, spontaneous, exothermic, and physisorption process. Without seeing a substantial decline in adsorptive performance, the Fe3O4-GLP@CAB was employed for five regeneration cycles. Because they can be readily separated from wastewater after treatment, the synthesized Fe3O4-GLP@CAB was thus regarded as a highly recyclable and effective adsorbent for MB dye.

Investigating the effect of clay content and type on the mechanical performance of calcium alginate-based hybrid bio-capsules

This study aims to investigate the mechanical behavior of alginate-based simple and alginate@clay-based hybrid capsules under uniaxial compression using a Brookfield force machine. The effect of clay type and content on Young's modulus and nominal rupture stress of the capsules was investigated and characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Results showed that clay content improves the mechanical properties depending on its type. Montmorillonite and laponite clays showed optimal results at 3 wt% content, with a gain of 63.2 % and 70.34 % on Young's modulus, and a gain of 92.43 % and 108.66 % on nominal rupture stress, respectively, while kaolinite clay showed optimal results at 1.5 wt% content with an increase of 77.21 % on Young's modulus and 88.34 % on nominal rupture stress. However, exceeding the optimal content led to decrease the elasticity and rigidity due to the incomplete dispersion of clay particles in the hydrogel network. The theoretical modeling using Boltzmann superposition principle revealed that the elastic modulus was in good agreement with experimental values. Overall, this research provides insights into the mechanical behavior of alginate@clay-based capsules, which could have potential applications in drug delivery systems and tissue engineering.

Effective Adsorptive Removal of Coomassie Violet Dye from Aqueous Solutions Using Green Synthesized Zinc Hydroxide Nanoparticles Prepared from Calotropis gigantea Leaf Extract

The removal of color from dye wastewater is crucial, since dyes are extremely toxic and can cause cancer in a variety of life forms. Studies must be done to use cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of color from dye effluents to protect the environment. To our knowledge, virtually no research has been done to describe the possibility of using Calotropis gigantea leaf extract zinc hydroxide nanoparticles (CG-Zn(OH)2NPs) as an adsorbent for the decolorization of Coomassie violet (CV) from the aqueous emulsion, either in batch mode or continuously. In the present batch investigation, CV dye is removed from the synthetic aqueous phase using CG-Zn(OH)2NPs as an adsorbent. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using various instrumental techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume, a particle size analyser, and zero-point charge. The decolorization efficacy of CV dye from an aqueous phase by the adsorbent was examined in batch mode by varying process parameters. The consequences of various experimental variables were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) to achieve the maximum decolorization efficiency (90.74%) and equilibrium dye uptake, qe (35.12 mg g−1). The optimum pH, dye concentration, CG-Zn(OH)2NPs adsorbent dosage, and particle size were found to be 1.8, 225 mg L−1, 5 g L−1, and 78 μm, respectively for CV dye adsorption capacity at equilibrium. The adsorbent zero-point charge was found to be at pH 8.5. The Langmuir isotherm model provided a good representation of the equilibrium data in aqueous solutions, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capability (qmax) of 40.25 mg g−1 at 299 K. The dye adsorption rate follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model at various dye concentrations, which indicated that the reaction is more chemisorption than physisorption. The negative values of ΔG and positive values of ΔH at different temperatures indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic, respectively. Reusability tests revealed that the prepared nanoparticles may be used for up to three runs, indicating that the novel CG-Zn(OH)2NPs seems to be a very promising adsorbent for the removal of Coomassie violet dye from wastewater.

Engineering sodium alginate-SiO2 composite beads for efficient removal of methylene blue from water

The lack of sufficient active binding sites in commonly reported sodium alginate (SA)-based porous beads hampers their performances in adsorption of water contaminants. To address this problem, porous SA-SiO₂ beads functionalized with poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) (PAMPS) are reported in this work. Due to the porous properties and the existence of abundant sulfonate groups, the obtained composite material SA-SiO₂-PAMPS shows excellent adsorption capacity toward cationic dye methylene blue (MB). The adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm studies reveal that the adsorption process fits closely to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively, suggesting the existence of chemical adsorption and monolayer adsorption behavior. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir model is found to be 427.36, 495.05, and 564.97 mg/g under 25, 35, and 45 °C, respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicate that MB adsorption on SA-SiO₂-PAMPS is spontaneous and endothermic.
