Abstract
The removal of dye molecules in alkaline environments is an issue that should receive increased attention. In this study, the interaction mechanism between polydopamine-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (P-MWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) in alkaline environments was explained in depth by adsorption, spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT). The mechanism of action and dominant forces between the adsorbent and adsorbate were analyzed graphically by introducing energy decomposition analysis (EDA) and an independent gradient model (IGM) into the DFT calculations. In addition, the force distribution was investigated through an isosurface. Moreover, batch adsorption studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs for MB removal in alkaline environments. The maximum MB adsorption capacities of the MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in solution were 113.3 mg‧g-1 and 230.4 mg‧g-1, respectively, at pH 9. The IGM and EDA showed that the better adsorption capacity of the P-MWCNTs originated from the enhancement of the electrostatic effect by the proton dissociation of polydopamine. Moreover, the adsorption of MB by MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in alkaline environments was governed by dispersion and electrostatic effects, respectively. Through this study, it is hoped that progress will be made in the use of DFT to explore the mechanism of adsorbent-adsorbate interactions.

Abstract
Covalent organic structures (MOFs), known for their exceptional properties in separation and purification, have garnered significant attention. However, applying MOF-based adsorbents in complex flavonoid separation scenarios remains challenging. In this study, we successfully synthesized adsorbent materials capable of efficiently adsorbing flavonoids using a vacuum freeze-drying method. The materials were derived from a cross-linked chitosan aerogel functionalized with amino-substituted zeolite imidazolium ester skeleton (ZIF-8). The ZIF-8-NH2, synthesized via in situ substitution of 2-aminobenzimidazole within the ZIF-8 framework, exhibits a smaller pore size than mono ligand ZIF-8. Due to its synergistic interaction with chitosan's biocompatibility and porous structure, the aerogel material (ZIF-8-NH2/CS) exhibited outstanding adsorption capacities (183.37 mg/g, 226.34 mg/g, and 187.16 mg/g) in standard solutions (T = 318 K, rpm = 200) of luteolin, quercetin, and rutin, along with high adsorption rates (71.3 ± 2.3 %, 72.4 ± 1.4 %, and 70.7 ± 3.5 %). And showed rapid adsorption in the first 60 min. After 5 cycles, the adsorption capacity of ZIF-8-NH2/CS aerogel remained at 80.5 % of the adsorption capacity of the initial cycle, and therefore, ZIF-8-NH2/CS aerogel has a good potential for reusability. Additionally, the adsorption process adhered to pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, alongside Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption models. This study introduces novel ideas and methods for the extraction and separation of flavonoids. Furthermore, the developed ZIF-8-NH2/CS aerogels with amino functionality hold promise for diverse applications in separating and purifying bioactive substances.

Abstract
Efficient and simultaneous removal of anionic and cationic dyes from wastewater using low-cost and environmentally-friendly adsorbent is highly required. Herein, the carboxylated cellulose (carboxyl content: 2.97 mmol/g) derived from pomelo peel was extracted by a one-step H2O2/H2SO4-mediated oxidation method. Subsequently, a novel pomelo-peel cellulose/chitosan/sodium alginate (PCS) amphoteric aerogel with a specific core-shell structure was synthesized by multiple physical cross-linking strategies. The shell layer and core layer of the optimized P3CS0.75 aerogel can selectively adsorb cationic dyes and anionic dyes, in which, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities were 888.27 mg/g and 1816.87 mg/g towards methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR), respectively. Especially, the aerogel's core/shell layer exhibited hierarchical adsorption behavior without overlapping sites even in the binary dye systems. The adsorption performance of obtained amphoteric aerogel remained effective in a wide pH range and under different practical water systems. Moreover, the removal efficiencies for MB and CR were slightly reduced from 90.76 % and 99.66 % to 88.08 % and 91.39 %, respectively, after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles, and the aerogel's structural integrity was also maintained due to its good compressive strength (487.16 KPa). In addition, the adsorption mechanism of PCS aerogel was investigated using adsorption kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was proved that the adsorption process was endothermic spontaneous-monolayer adsorption driven by electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding. Therefore, the prepared biobased aerogel was expected to be a prospective material for removing mixed dyes from wastewater.

Abstract
The abundant pore structure and carbon composition of sphagnum peat moss render it a bio-based adsorbent for efficient methylene blue removal from wastewater. By utilizing sphagnum moss sourced from Guizhou, China, as raw material, a cost-effective and highly efficient bio-based adsorbent material was prepared through chemical modification. The structure and performance of the modified sphagnum moss were characterized using SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA techniques. Batch adsorption experiments explored the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, initial dye concentration, and temperature on adsorption performance. Kinetics, isotherm models, and thermodynamics elucidated the adsorption behavior and mechanism. The modified sphagnum moss exhibited increased surface roughness and uniform surface modification, enhancing active site availability for improved adsorption. Experimental data aligned well with the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating efficient adsorption. The study elucidated the adsorption mechanism, laying a foundation for effective methylene blue removal. The utilization of modified sphagnum moss demonstrates significant potential in effectively removing MB from contaminated solutions due to its robust adsorption capability and efficient reusability.

Abstract
Radioactive iodine is considered one of the most dangerous radioactive elements in nuclear waste. Therefore, effective capture of radioactive iodine is essential for developing and using nuclear energy to solve the energy crisis. Some materials that have been developed for removing radioactive iodine still suffer from complex synthesis, low removal capacity, and non-reusability. Herein, covalent organic framework (COF)/chitosan (CS) aerogels were prepared using vacuum freeze-drying, and the COF nanoparticles were tightly attached on the green biomass material CS networks. Due to the synergistic effect of both COF and CS, the composite aerogel shows a three-dimensional porous and stable structure in the recycle usage. The COF/CS aerogel exhibits excellent iodine adsorption capacity of 2211.58 mg g-1 and 5.62 g g-1 for static iodine solution and iodine vapor, respectively, better than some common adsorbents. Furthermore, COF/CS aerogel demonstrated good recyclability performance with 87 % of the initial adsorption capacity after 5 cycles. In addition, the interaction between iodine and imine groups, amino groups, and benzene rings of aerogel are the possible adsorption mechanisms. COF/CS aerogel has excellent adsorption properties, good chemical stability, and reusable performance, which is a potential and efficient adsorbent for industrial radioactive iodine adsorption from nuclear waste.
