Abstract
Background In the United States, the relationship between visceral obesity and the risk of developing atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) for the first time in 10 years is unclear. Methods Data for this cross-sectional study came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2020. We collected variable information related to 10-year ASCVD risk and visceral obesity reliable indicators [Visceral obesity index (VAI) and Lipid accumulation product (LAP)]. And we used multiple logistic regression to analyze the correlation of visceral obesity indicators (VAI and LAP) with 10-year ASCVD risk. In addition, we assessed the linear relationship between VAI or LAP and 10-year ASCVD risk by smoothing curve fitting. Finally, we conducted subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis after excluding participants with extreme VAI and LAP values to ensure that we obtained accurate and reliable results. Results Our study included a total of 1,547 participants (mean age: 56.5 ± 10.1, 60% of males). The results of the multiple logistic regression showed that compared with participants with the lowest VAI in the 1st Quartile (≤0.79), the adjusted OR values for VAI and elevated 10-year ASCVD risk in Q3 (1.30-2.14), and Q4 (≥2.15) were 2.58 (95% CI: 1.24-5.36, P = 0.011), 15.14 (95% CI: 6.93-33.05, P < 0.001), respectively. Compared with participants with the lowest LAP in the 1st Quartile (≤28.29), the adjusted OR values for VAI and elevated 10-year ASCVD risk in Q3 (46.52-77.00), and Q4 (≥77.01) were 4.63 (95% CI: 2.18-9.82, P < 0.001), 16.94 (95% CI: 6.74-42.57, P < 0.001), respectively. Stratified analysis showed that the association between VAI or LAP and the first ASCVD event was more pronounced in males. Conclusion Higher VAI or LAP scores are significantly associated with elevated 10-year ASCVD risk in adults aged 40 to 79 in the USA, which suggested that monitoring visceral obesity is crucial to reduce the risk of a first ASCVD event.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Whether carotid artery disease could improve stroke risk stratification tools in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) remains uncertain. This study was undertaken to investigate the risk of ischemic stroke associated with occlusive and nonocclusive carotid atherosclerotic disease in patients with AF in the prospective population-based Cardiovascular Health Study. METHODS We included participants aged ≥65 years with AF. We used multivariable Cox regression analysis to explore the risk of ischemic stroke associated with the percentage of carotid stenosis, plaque irregularity, echogenicity, and vulnerability (markedly irregular, ulcerated, or hypoechoic plaques). RESULTS A total of 1398 participants were included (55.2% female, 61.7% aged 65-74 years). The maximum carotid stenosis was <50%, 50%-99%, and 100% in 94.5%, 5%, and 0.5% of participants, respectively. High-risk plaques based on echogenicity and plaque irregularity were found in 25.6% and 8.9% of participants, respectively. After a median follow-up of 10.9 years (interquartile range = 7.5-15.6), 298 ischemic strokes were recorded. There was no difference in the incidence of ischemic stroke according to the degree of carotid artery stenosis (p = 0.44), plaque echogenicity (low vs. high risk, p = 0.68), plaque irregularity (low vs. high risk, p = 0.55), and plaque vulnerability (p = 0.86). The CHA₂DS₂-VASc score was associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.28, 95% confidence interval = 1.18-1.40, p < 0.001). Both maximum grade of stenosis and plaque vulnerability were not associated with incident ischemic stroke (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Neither the degree of carotid stenosis nor the presence of vulnerable plaques was associated with incident ischemic stroke in this cohort of individuals with AF. This suggests that carotid disease was probably not a significant contributor to ischemic stroke in this population.

Abstract
Background: Circulating CD34+ progenitor cells (CD34+CPCs) are characterized by pronounced tissue regeneration activity. Dyslipidemic subjects seemed to have reduced CD34+CPCs, and statin therapy appeared to restore their levels. We aimed to evaluate the effects of PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9-i) on CD34+CPCs and pulse wave velocity (PWV) in a cohort of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) subjects. Methods: We determined CD34+ cell count and its change after PCSK9-i in 30 selected HeFH subjects and 30 healthy controls. Lipid profile and PWV were evaluated at baseline (T0), 6 months after intensive lipid lowering strategy (statin plus ezetimibe, T1), and after 6 months of optimized therapy with PCSK9-i (T2); CD34+ cell count was reported at T1 and T2. Results: At T1, the median value of CD34+ cells was not significantly different between HeFH subjects and controls, and the same result was obtained at T2. PWV was significantly reduced at T1 (ΔPWV − 14.8%, p < 0.001 vs. T0) and T2 (ΔPWV − 10.96%, p < 0.001 vs. T1). Dividing HeFH subjects into two groups of high- and low-CD34+ cell count, CD34+CPCs appeared to be polarized with a significant difference between the two groups (1.2 (0.46) vs. 4.74 (1.92), p < 0.001), also with respect to controls (both p < 0.001). This polarization was no longer observed at T2, and neither with respect to controls. ΔCD34+ was +67.4% in the low-CD34+ group and −39.24% in the high-CD34+ group (p < 0.001). Lastly, we found a significant correlation between ΔCD34+ cell number and ΔPWV in HeFH subjects (rho = −0.365, p < 0.05), particularly in the low-CD34+ group (rho = −0.681, p < 0.001). Conclusion: PCSK9-i exhibited favorable effects on CD34 + CPCs as was on PWV values in a cohort of FH subjects. Our preliminary findings suggest a possible positive role of this novel lipid-lowering strategy on vascular homeostasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS There is limited evidence on the association between insulin resistance (IR) and carotid plaque was reported in prospective study. We aimed to exploit the relationship between IR and carotid plaque in a prospective cohort study. METHODS AND RESULTS The study was performed in a functional community cohort in urban Beijing. In 2015, a total of 7061 individuals without intima-media thickness (IMT) thickening and carotid artery plaque were recruited and followed up until 2019. Restricted cubic spline was conducted to exploit the dose-response relationship between carotid plaque and baseline HOMA-IR or TyG index as continuous variables. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between carotid plaque and HOMA-IR or TyG index. During the average 4 years follow-up, 589 subjects developed carotid plaque. Both HOMA-IR and TyG index showed significant linear dose-response relationship on carotid plaque (p < 0.001). The RRs (95%CI) for subjects with baseline HOMA-IR in quartile 2, quartile 3 and quartile 4 were 1.52 (1.14-2.04), 1.86 (1.40-2.46), and 2.55 (1.94-3.35) compared to quartile 1, respectively. Compared to the first quartile of TyG, the RRs (95%CI) for subjects in quartile 2, quartile 3 and quartile 4 were 1.43 (1.08-1.90), 1.59 (1.20-2.12), and 1.69 (1.26-2.25), respectively. In total population, the predictive ability of HOMA-IR for carotid plaque was significantly better than that of TyG index (p = 0.025). CONCLUSION IR is an independent risk factor of carotid plaque. Both HOMA-IR and TyG has significant predictive ability for carotid plaque.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review aims to evaluate the major cardiovascular adverse events (MACE) and antithrombotic approaches in concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) and atherosclerosis. RECENT FINDINGS MACE in concomitant AF and atherosclerosis has been evaluated in recent studies. A recent retrospective study of 2670 patients with AF revealed that atherosclerosis burden with AF can be a marker of adverse vascular outcomes with extracranial atherosclerosis as a potent predictor of MACE. Trials to evaluate the antithrombotic approaches in concomitant atherosclerotic disease and AF has been mainly in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). AFIRE trial demonstrated that in patients with AF and stable CAD rivaroxaban alone is not inferior to rivaroxaban plus aspirin with better safety profile. Atherosclerosis is common in AF and poses additional risk to patients. Antithrombotic management of atherosclerosis in AF is not well investigated and needs further trial to identify the subgroups that benefit from more intensive antithrombotic measures.

Direct and Indirect Effects of SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in Subjects with Familial Hypercholesterolemia: A Single Lipid-Center Real-World Evaluation. J Clin Med 2021; 10:jcm10194363. Abstract
We evaluated the impact of direct and indirect effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in subjects with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). In this observational, retrospective study, 260 FH subjects participated in a telephone survey concerning lipid profile values, lipidologist and cardiologist consultations and vascular imaging evaluation during the 12 months before and after the Italian lockdown. The direct effect was defined as SARS-CoV-2 infection; the indirect effect was defined as the difference in one of the parameters evaluated by the telephone survey before and after lockdown. Among FH subjects, the percentage of the lipid profile evaluation was lower after lockdown than before lockdown (56.5% vs. 100.0%, p < 0.01), HDL-C was significantly reduced (47.78 ± 10.12 vs. 53.2 ± 10.38 mg/dL, p < 0.05) and a significant increase in non-HDL-C was found (117.24 ± 18.83 vs. 133.09 ± 19.01 mg/dL, p < 0.05). The proportions of lipidologist and/or cardiologist consultations and/or vascular imaging were lower after lockdown than before lockdown (for lipidologist consultation 33.5% vs. 100.0%, p < 0.001; for cardiologist consultation 22.3% vs. 60.8%, p < 0.01; for vascular imaging 19.6% vs. 100.0%, p < 0.001); the main cause of missed lipid profile analysis and/or healthcare consultation was the fear of SARS-CoV-2 contagion. The percentage of FH subjects affected by SARS-CoV-2 was 7.3%. In conclusion, a lower percentage of FH subjects underwent a lipid profile analysis, lipidologist and cardiologist consultations and vascular imaging evaluation after SARS-CoV-2 Italian lockdown.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia worldwide and results in a significantly increased ischemic stroke (IS) risk. IS risk stratification tools are widely being applied to guide anticoagulation treatment decisions and duration in patients with non-valvular AF (NVAF). The CHA2DS2-VASc score is largely validated and currently recommended by renowned guidelines. However, this score is heavily dependent on age, sex, and comorbidities, and exhibits only moderate predictive power. Finding effective and validated clinical biomarkers to assist in personalized IS risk evaluation has become one of the promising directions in the prevention and treatment of NVAF. A number of studies in recent years have explored differentially expressed biomarkers in NVAF patients with and without IS, and the potential role of various biomarkers for prediction or early diagnosis of IS in patients with NVAF. In this review, we describe the clinical application and utility of AF characteristics, cardiac imaging and electrocardiogram markers, arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis-related markers, circulating biomarkers, and novel genetic markers in IS diagnosis and management of patients with NVAF. We conclude that at present, there is no consensus understanding of a desirable biomarker for IS risk stratification in NVAF, and enrolling these biomarkers into extant models also remains challenging. Further prospective cohorts and trials are needed to integrate various clinical risk factors and biomarkers to optimize IS prediction in patients with NVAF. However, we believe that the growing insight into molecular mechanisms and in-depth understanding of existing and emerging biomarkers may further improve the IS risk identification and guide anticoagulation therapy in patients with NVAF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Glycoproteins play a key role in inflammatory and cardiometabolic processes. Their implication in atherosclerosis in type 1 diabetes (T1D) is unknown. We assessed the relationships between classic inflammatory markers, glycoproteins measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), and preclinical atherosclerosis in these patients. METHODS AND RESULTS We selected patients with T1D, without cardiovascular disease (CVD), with: age ≥40 years, nephropathy (micro/macroalbuminuria), or ≥10 years of evolution with another risk factor. The presence of plaque (intima-media thickness >1.5 mm) was determined by ultrasonography. Concentrations of high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), circulating leukocytes (classical inflammation markers) and 1H-NMR-glycoproteins (GlycA, GlycB, GlycF, and the height/width [H/W] ratios of GlycA and GlycB) were determined. We included 189 patients (58% male, age 47.0 [40.7-55.2] years). Thirty-five percent presented plaques (22%, ≥2 plaques). There was no association between hsCRP or leukocytes and atherosclerosis. However, in age- and sex-adjusted models, GlycA, GlycF, and the H/W ratios of GlycA and GlycB gradually increased with the number of plaques (0, 1, ≥2 plaques) only in patients without statins (p < 0.05), with no association in patients receiving this drug (p for interaction <0.05; in ≥2 plaques). Finally, in models adjusted for other classical and T1D-specific risk factors, GlycA and GlycB H/W ratios remained associated with carotid plaque (OR 1.39 [1.12-1.90] and OR 6.89 [1.85-25.62], respectively). CONCLUSION In T1D individuals without lipid-lowering treatment, 1H-NMR-glycoproteins were independently associated with the presence and amount of carotid atherosclerosis, unlike other classical inflammatory markers. Further studies are needed to ascertain their utility as CVD biomarkers.

Abstract
Prevention of ischemic stroke relies on the use of antithrombotic medications comprising antiplatelet agents and anticoagulation. Stroke risk is particularly high in patients with cardiovascular disease. This review will focus on the role of antithrombotic therapies in the context of different types of cardiovascular disease. We will discuss oral antiplatelet medications and both IV and parental anticoagulants. Different kinds of cardiovascular disease contribute to stroke via distinct pathophysiological mechanisms, and the optimal treatment for each varies accordingly. We will explore the mechanism of stroke and evidence for antithrombotic therapy in the following conditions: atrial fibrillation, prosthetic heart values (mechanical and bioprosthetic), aortic arch atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure (CHF), endocarditis (infective and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis), patent foramen ovale (PFO), left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). While robust data exist for antithrombotic use in conditions such as atrial fibrillation, optimal treatment in many situations remains under active investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aimed to summarize the evidence on the risk of thromboembolism associated with carotid and aortic atherosclerosis in patients with AF, and the potential impact of their inclusion in current stroke risk stratification scores. METHODS MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE were systematically searched to identify all published studies providing relevant data through 28 February 2021. RESULTS We identified 10 eligible studies. There was high heterogeneity across studies, precluding a meta-analysis. Carotid stenosis was not associated with incident ischemic stroke in three prospective studies, including the SPAF II trial and the ROCKET-AF trial. An association between carotid stenosis and thromboembolism was found in two studies, with a potential reporting bias due to their retrospective design. The evidence suggesting that carotid plaque predicts stroke or transient ischemic attack in AF patients were more consistent in the four studies evaluating this association. The inclusion of carotid plaque and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) into stroke risk stratification tools for AF patients improved their performance. Data on the association of aortic plaque with thromboembolism is scarce in patients with AF. The two studies reporting on this association suggest that aortic plaque alone does not predict incident ischemic stroke. CONCLUSION Available data suggest an association of carotid atherosclerosis with the risk of stroke and transient ischemic attack in patients with AF. Future studies should evaluate whether incorporating cIMT and characteristics of carotid and aortic plaques into scoring systems would improve stroke prediction and prevention in patients with AF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Vascular disease is an established risk factor for stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), which is included in CHA2DS2-VASc score. However, the role of carotid atherosclerosis remains to be determined. METHODS Three hundred-ten patients with AF who underwent carotid sonography were enrolled. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 31 months, 18 events (5.8%) of stroke were identified. Patients with stroke had higher carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) (1.16 ± 0.33 mm vs. 0.98 ± 0.25 mm, p = 0.017). CIMT was significantly increased according to the CHA2DS2-VASc score (p < 0.001) and it was correlated with left ventricular mass index and early diastolic mitral annular velocity (e'), a ratio of early transmitral flow velocity to e' (E/e') and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (all p < 0.05). Cox regression using multivariate models showed that carotid plaque was associated with the risk of stroke (hazard ratio, 3.748; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.107 to 12.688; p = 0.034). C-statistics increased from 0.648 (95% CI, 0.538 to 0.757) to 0.716 (95% CI, 0.628 to 0.804) in the CHA2DS2-VASc score model after the addition of CIMT and carotid plaque as a vascular component (p = 0.013). CONCLUSION Increased CIMT and presence of carotid plaque are associated with a high risk of ischemic stroke, and CIMT is related to myocardial remodeling and diastolic dysfunction, suggesting that carotid atherosclerosis can improve risk prediction of stroke in patients with AF, when included under vascular disease in the CHA2DS2-VASc scoring system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS CKD patients have a high prevalence of LVH and this leads to an increase of cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left ventricular geometry in a group of 293 hypertensive patients with stage 2-5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared with 289 essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function. METHODS AND RESULTS All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Patients on stage 1 CKD, dialysis treatment, or with cardiovascular diseases were excluded. LVH was observed in 62.8% of patients with CKD and in 51.9% of essential hypertensive patients (P < 0.0001). We found increasingly higher left ventricular diameters, thicknesses, and mass from stage 2-5 CKD. Distribution of concentric and eccentric LVH was not very different between the two groups. However, after introducing mixed hypertrophy, the difference between the two groups group was disclosed (P = 0.027). Multiple regression analysis confirmed that the association between renal function and left ventricular mass (β -0.287; P < 0.0001) was independent by potential confounders. Diastolic function was significantly worse in patients with CKD, especially in more advanced stages. CONCLUSION Our study confirms that LVH is highly prevalent in patients with CKD, especially by using the most recent cut off; in this population, LVH is often characterized by the simultaneous increase of wall thicknesses and diameters with negative effects on diastolic function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an elevated risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Although previous data have suggested that serum calcium levels could be involved in T2DM and cardiovascular disease, whether this applies in T2DM patients with atherosclerosis remains unclear. This study therefore aimed to investigate the relationship between serum calcium levels within the physiological ranges and carotid atherosclerotic plaque in T2DM patients. METHODS A total of 594 normocalcaemic in-patients with T2DM were recruited, of whom 231 had carotid atherosclerotic plaque. Serum calcium levels were measured and carotid ultrasonography was performed. RESULTS Patients with plaque had significantly higher serum albumin-corrected calcium than those without plaque [9.02 (8.78-9.34) mg/dL versus 8.86 (8.66-9.06) mg/dL, p < 0.001]. As serum albumin-corrected calcium levels increased across tertiles, the percentage of plaque increased (27.6%, 35.5%, and 55.7%; p < 0.001). Logistic regression showed that serum albumin-corrected calcium levels were independently and positively correlated with the presence of plaque, but not parathyroid hormone levels. Compared with patients in the lowest serum calcium tertiles, the odds ratio for plaque in patients in the upper quartile was 2.47 (95% confidence interval 1.51-4.03, p < 0.001) after adjustment for potential confounders. CONCLUSION Serum albumin-corrected calcium levels are elevated in patients with T2DM and carotid atherosclerotic plaques.

Abstract
In recent years a growing body of evidence supported the role of inflammation in the initiation, maintenance and outcome of atrial fibrillation (AF). Nevertheless, despite a large amount of information, whether AF or the underlying structural heart disease (SHD) is the cause of the inflammatory process is still under debate. We, therefore, sought to determine if the inflammatory process reflect an underlying disease or the arrhythmia ‘per se’. We evaluated plasma levels of soluble Interleukin 2 Receptor Alpha (sIL-2Rα), TNF-α and IL-18 in 100 consecutive patients with permanent AF, (43 with a SHD and 57 without a SHD) compared to 121 age and sex-matched controls which had normal sinus rhythm. We also evaluated the endothelial function in both groups of patients using reactive hyperemia index (RHI) values measured by Endo-PAT2000. Compared to controls, AF patients showed higher circulating levels of inflammatory markers and a lower mean value of RHI. At multiple logistic regression analysis, the inflammatory markers and RHI were significantly associated with AF presence, whereas ROC curve analysis had good sensitivity and specificity in inflammatory variables and RHI for AF presence. No significant association was observed in the group of permanent AF patients, between inflammatory markers and the presence of an underlying SHD. These findings could help to clarify the role of inflammation in subjects with AF and suggest that the markers of systemic inflammation are not associated with the underlying cardiovascular disease, rather with the atrial fibrillation ‘per se’.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review aims to explore the relationship between AF and carotid atherosclerosis, and the impact on the outcomes of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Also, our aim is to critically review current knowledge and delineate future directions for effective treatment or prevention as well as strategies for improvement of the quality of life and survival. RECENT FINDINGS Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, increasing the risk of stroke and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality representing a significant worldwide public health problem. On the other hand, carotid artery atherosclerosis can also significantly increase the risk of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and death. Firstly, we report epidemiological data on AF patients in different countries and regions having carotid artery abnormalities such as carotid artery plaque formation, atherosclerotic, and even stenosis. Despite geographical variations, these abnormalities were more frequent in AF patients and correlated with the duration of AF and the value of CHA2DS2-VASc score. Moreover, it is evident that AF patients with carotid artery abnormalities have significantly increased risk of adverse outcomes from the heart and brain. According to the CHA(2)DS2 (-VASc) score, AF patients are managed with anticoagulation therapy. Reviewing existing data on the treatment for stroke prevention in patients with AF, carotid artery disease, or both, we found that antiplatelet therapy could be combined with anticoagulant therapy appropriately in certain circumstances. In addition, some emerging technologies, such as the percutaneous permanent carotid filter, may be used safely and effectively to prevent the occurrence of stroke in patients both with AF and carotid artery atherosclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation (AF) shares several risk factors with atherosclerosis. We investigated the association between total carotid plaque number (TPN) and long-term prognosis in ischemic stroke patients with AF. METHODS A total of 392 ischemic stroke patients with AF who underwent carotid ultrasonography were enrolled. TPN was assessed using B-mode ultrasound. The patients were categorized into two groups according to best cutoff values for TPN (TPN ≤ 4 vs. TPN ≥ 5). The long-term risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and mortality according to TPN was investigated using a Cox hazard model. RESULTS After a mean follow-up of 2.42 years, 113 patients (28.8%) had developed MACE and 88 patients (22.4%) had died. MACE occurred more frequently in the TPN ≥ 5 group than in the TPN ≤ 4 group (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.50; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-2.21; p < 0.05). Moreover, the TPN ≥ 5 group showed an increased risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted HR, 2.69; 95% CI, 1.40-5.17; p < 0.05). TPN along with maximal plaque thickness and intima media thickness showed improved prognostic utility when added to the variables of the CHAD2DS2-VASc score. CONCLUSION TPN can predict the long-term outcome of ischemic stroke patients with AF. Adding TPN to the CHAD2DS2-VASc score increases the predictability of outcome after stroke.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to assess the association between CHA2DS2-VASc score and carotid plaques in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Methods We conducted a retrospective study including 3,435 NVAF patients who underwent carotid ultrasound examinations from January 2015 to December 2017.We collected the clinical data on the medical records system. Chi-square trend test was used to analyze trends between the prevalence of carotid plaques with an increasing CHA2DS2-VASc score. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was also used to assess the association between carotid plaques and CHA2DS2-VASc scores. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was used to determine the optimal cutoff points of different CHA2DS2-VASc scores in NVAF patients. Results NVAF patients with carotid plaques had higher CHA2DS2-VASc scores compared with patients who did not have carotid plaques (3.01±1.36 vs. 2.55±1.28, P < 0.05). In all participants, male participants and female participants, the prevalence of carotid plaques increased significantly as the CHA2DS2-VASc score increased (P for trend < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that for each 1-point increase in the CHA2DS2-VASc score, there was an associated 37% increase in the prevalence of carotid plaques. ROC curve analysis revealed that a CHA2DS2-VASc score ≥ 2 in male patients (sensitivity, 44.67%; specificity, 75.64%; AUC, 0.639) or ≥ 3 in female patients (sensitivity, 47.24%; specificity, 72.40%; AUC, 0.634) were associated with carotid plaques. Conclusion The prevalence of carotid plaques in patients with NVAF was associated with the CHA2DS2-VASc score.
