Abstract
Various pathogens have the ability to grow on food matrices and instruments. This grow may reach to form biofilms. Bacterial biofilms are community of microorganisms embedded in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) containing lipids, DNA, proteins, and polysaccharides. These EPSs provide a tolerance and favorable living condition for microorganisms. Biofilm formations could not only contribute a risk for food safety but also have negative impacts on healthcare sector. Once biofilms form, they reveal resistances to traditional detergents and disinfectants, leading to cross-contamination. Inhibition of biofilms formation and abolition of mature biofilms is the main target for controlling of biofilm hazards in the food industry. Some novel eco-friendly technologies such as ultrasound, ultraviolet, cold plasma, magnetic nanoparticles, different chemicals additives as vitamins, D-amino acids, enzymes, antimicrobial peptides, and many other inhibitors provide a significant value on biofilm inhibition. These anti-biofilm agents represent promising tools for food industries and researchers to interfere with different phases of biofilms including adherence, quorum sensing molecules, and cell-to-cell communication. This perspective review highlights the biofilm formation mechanisms, issues associated with biofilms, environmental factors influencing bacterial biofilm development, and recent strategies employed to control biofilm-forming bacteria in the food industry. Further studies are still needed to explore the effects of biofilm regulation in food industries and exploit more regulation strategies for improving the quality and decreasing economic losses.

Abstract
Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have become a major challenge for global healthcare systems. The search for antibacterial compounds from plants has received increasing attention in the fight against MDR bacteria. As a medicinal and edible plant, Lophatherum gracile Brongn. (L. gracile) has favorable antibacterial effect. However, the main antibacterial active compound and its antimicrobial mechanism are not clear. Here, our study first identified the key active compound from L. gracile as luteolin. Meanwhile, the antibacterial effect of luteolin was detected by using the broth microdilution method and time-kill curve analysis. Luteolin can also cause morphological structure degeneration and content leakage, cell wall/membrane damage, ATP synthesis reduction, and downregulation of mRNA expression levels of sulfonamide and quinolones resistance genes in multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli (MDR E. coli). Furthermore, untargeted UPLC/Q-TOF-MS-based metabolomics analysis of the bacterial metabolites revealed that luteolin significantly changed riboflavin energy metabolism, bacterial chemotaxis cell process and glycerophospholipid metabolism of MDR E. coli. This study suggests that luteolin could be a potential new food additive or preservative for controlling MDR E. coli infection and spread.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Side effects associated with antimicrobial drugs, as well as their high cost, have prompted a search for low-cost herbal medicinal substances with fewer side effects. These substances can be used as supplements to medicine or to strengthen their effects. The current study investigated the effect of oleuropein on the inhibition of fungal and bacterial biofilm in-vitro and at the molecular level. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this experimental study, antimicrobial properties were evaluated using microbroth dilution method. The effect of oleuropein on the formation and eradication of biofilm was assessed on 96-well flat bottom microtiter plates and their effects were observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Its effect on key genes (Hwp1, Als3, Epa1, Epa6, LuxS, Pfs) involved in biofilm formation was investigated using the quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) method. RESULTS The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal/bactericidal concentration (MFC/MBC) for oleuropein were found to be 65 mg/ml and 130 mg/ml, respectively. Oleuropein significantly inhibited biofilm formation at MIC/2 (32.5 mg/ml), MIC/4 (16.25 mg/ml), MIC/8 (8.125 mg/ml) and MIC/16 (4.062 mg/ml) (p < 0.0001). The anti-biofilm effect of oleuropein was confirmed by SEM. RT-qPCR indicated significant down regulation of expression genes involved in biofilm formation in Candida albicans (Hwp1, Als3) and Candida glabrata (Epa1, Epa6) as well as Escherichia coli (LuxS, Pfs) genes after culture with a MIC/2 of oleuropein (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that oleuropein has antifungal and antibacterial properties that enable it to inhibit or destroy the formation of fungal and bacterial biofilm.

Abstract
This investigation aims to highlight the applicability of a potent eco-friendly developed composite film to combat the Escherichia coli biofilm formed in a model food system. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized using green methods were anchored on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Subsequently, nano-chitosan (NCh) solutions were used to disperse the synthesized nanoparticles and cinnamon essential oil (CEO). These solutions, containing various concentrations of CNC@ZnO NPs and CEO, were sequentially coated onto cellulosic papers to inhibit Escherichia coli biofilms on grey zucchini slices. Six films were developed, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, biodegradation, and mechanical properties were assessed. The film containing 5 % nano-emulsified CEO + 3 % dispersed CNC@ZnO nano-hybrid in an NCh solution was selected for further testing since it exhibited the largest zone of inhibition (34.32 mm) against E. coli and the highest anti-biofilm activity on biofilms developed on glass surfaces. The efficacy of the film against biofilms on zucchini surfaces was temperature-dependent. During 60 h, the selected film resulted in log reductions of approximately 4.5 logs, 2.85 logs, and 1.57 logs at 10 °C, 25 °C, and 37 °C, respectively. Applying the selected film onto zucchini surfaces containing biofilm structures leads to the disappearance of the distinctive three-dimensional biofilm framework. This innovative anti-biofilm film offers considerable potential in combatting biofilm issues on food surfaces. The film also preserved the sensory quality of zucchini evaluated for up to 60 days.

Abstract
The present study assessed the prevalence, virulence characteristics, antimicrobial resistance and biofilm-forming ability of E. coli and S. aureus recovered from egg samples in Ludhiana, Punjab. A total of 393 samples from hatcheries (n = 238), retail shops (n = 94), and households (n = 61) were collected. The prevalence of E. coli was observed as 11.70% and 9.16% for S. aureus. A total of 41.30% of E. coli isolates were positive for aggR gene and 52.17% were for fimA gene; while 36.11% of the S. aureus isolates were positive for coa gene. A high proportion of E. coli (76.10%) and S. aureus (69.44%) isolates were resistant toward ≥3 tested antibiotic classes. A total of 39.13% of E. coli isolates were moderate biofilm former, whereas the majority of the S. aureus (41.67%) were weak biofilm former. No significant difference regarding biofilm formation was observed between MDR and non-MDR isolates of E. coli and S. aureus. Biofilm genes viz., fimC and crl were reported in 43.47% and 80.43% of E. coli isolates, respectively; while icaA and icaD genes were reported in 58.34% and 47.22% of S. aureus isolates, respectively. A strong metabolic activity among 52.17% of E. coli and 41.66% of S. aureus isolates was observed using XTT assay. The present study highlights the need for applied food safety measures across the egg production chain of the region to prevent the development of MDR strains and biofilms.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the occurrence, antibiotic resistance, and biofilm formation of Escherichia coli in the Vietnamese Pangasius fish processing facility. Among 144 samples including Pangasius fish, wash water, food contact surfaces, and personnel gloves, 18 E. coli isolates was detected and characterized. The E. coli was detected most frequently in wash water samples (22%, 8/36), followed by Pangasius fish (18%, 8/45). According to the antibiotic susceptibility test by the disc diffusion method, isolates showed the highest resistance against sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (45%), followed by tetracycline (39%), whereas all the E. coli isolates were susceptible to meropenem and fosfomycin. Notably, 39% of the isolates (7/18) were found to be multidrug resistant while no E. coli isolates were confirmed as extended-spectrum β-lactamase producers by the double-disk synergy test. The potency to form biofilm on the polystyrene surface of E. coli isolates indicated that 44% of the isolates (8/18) were classified as weak, 39% (7/18) as moderate, and 17% (3/18) as strong biofilm formers. Interestingly, multidrug resistant E. coli isolates were observed in moderate and strong biofilm producers. Additionally, either slightly acidic hypochlorous water with 40 mg/L of available chlorine or sodium hypochlorite with 100 mg/L of available chlorine exhibited a significant reduction in biofilm mass and biofilm cells of E. coli isolates. This study may provide helpful information about the actual state of E. coli isolates for effective control in the fish processing plant.

Abstract
Good water quality for livestock is critical for preserving animal health, ensuring the quality of animal products, supplying safe food, and increasing food production economics. Higher water levels of toxic compounds than permitted can impair meat, fat, eggs, and milk production, lower fertility, and represent public health hazards. Water picks up pollutants from its surroundings and those caused by animal and human activities. Many physicochemical parameters were used to ensure water quality, including pH, salt, taste, color, alkalinity, odor, and hardness. Water quality, directly and indirectly, impacts livestock performance and, thus, the poultry industry. Employing drinking water as a carrier of drugs still faces substantial barriers. The effectiveness of vaccinations and drugs is affected by inadequate water quality. Furthermore, contaminated water and poor nutrition negatively affect broiler chicken immunity, survival, and production. Antibiotics are widely utilized in poultry production to preserve animal health and growth. They can eliminate harmful bacteria in the gut, reduce the load on the immune system, optimize the digestive system, and boost growth performance. However, the abuse of antibiotics in animal agriculture has resulted in antibiotic-resistant infections threatening people and animals. As a result of its positive impact on the metabolome and gut microbiome, the natural antimicrobial combination could be used as an alternative; improving broiler chicken growth performance without negatively affecting the environment is currently paramount.

Abstract
The lytic bacteriophages have potential application value in the treatment of bacterial infections. However, the narrow host spectrum of these phages limits their range of clinical application. Here, we demonstrate the use of scarless Cas9-assisted recombination (no-SCAR) gene-editing technology to regulate phage-host range. We used phage PHB20 as the scaffold to create agents targeting different multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli by replacing its phage tail fiber gene (ORF40). The engineered phages were polyvalent and capable of infecting both the original host bacteria and new targets. Phage-tail fiber genes can be amplified by PCR to construct a recombinant phage PHB20 library that can deal with multidrug-resistant bacteria in the future. Our results provide a better understanding of phage-host interactions, and we describe new anti-bacterial editing methods.

Abstract
In this study, the amendment of red mud (RM) in dairy manure composting on the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) by both direct (bacteria community, mobile genetic elements and quorum sensing) and indirect ways (environmental factors and antibiotics) was analyzed. The results showed that RM reduced the total relative abundances of 10 ARGs and 4 mobile genetic elements (MGEs). And the relative abundances of total ARGs and MGEs decreased by 53.48% and 22.30% in T (with RM added) on day 47 compared with day 0. Meanwhile, the modification of RM significantly increased the abundance of lsrK, pvdQ and ahlD in quorum quenching (QQ) and decreased the abundance of luxS in quorum sensing (QS) (P < 0.05), thereby attenuating the intercellular genes frequency of communication. The microbial community and network analysis showed that 25 potential hosts of ARGs were mainly related to Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and structural equation model (SEM) further indicated that RM altered microbial community structure by regulating antibiotic content and environmental factors (temperature, pH, moisture content and organic matter content), which then affected horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in ARGs mediated by QS and MGEs. These results provide new insights into the dissemination mechanism and removal of ARGs in composting process.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes can easily be transferred between bacteria in the biofilm. In the dairy industry, many bacterial species forming biofilms on the surfaces of equipment are widely reported. The experiments reported in this research paper aimed to investigate the carbapenem resistance and biofilm formation properties of Enterobacterales isolates which are spoilage microorganisms obtained from raw milk. In addition, the study determined that whether there was a relationship between the biofilm formation ability or the protein spectra of these isolates. In this study, ninety-two Enterobacterales isolates collected from 173 raw milk samples were investigated. Initially, the isolates were identified as Citrobacter braakii (n = 18), Citrobacter freundii (n = 12), Enterobacter asburiae (n = 1), Enterobacter cloacae (n = 3), Escherichia coli (n = 10), Hafnia alvei (n = 18), Klebsiella oxytoca (n = 1), Serratia fonticola (n = 24), Serratia liquefaciens (n = 4), and Serratia marcescens (n = 1) using MALDI-TOF MS. As a result, carbapenem resistance was determined in 6.5% of the isolates by CIM test, MHT, and the disk diffusion methods, but none of them had blaOXA-48, blaKPC, blaNDM-1, blaOXA23, blaOXA-58, blaOXA-51, blaVIM, and blaIMP genes. This may be due to the effect of other resistance mechanisms such as porin loss or increased flow pump activity. Furthermore, biofilm formation (weak and moderate) was detected in 97.8% of the Enterobacterales isolates. The mass spectra of the moderate biofilm producer isolate of Serratia spp. and the mass spectra of the weak biofilm producers of E.coli presented similarities.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA) on Vibrio parahaemolyticus biofilm formation and its effects on gene expression. Crystal violet assay, metabolic activity assay, and fluorescence experiments were used to evaluate the antibiofilm activities of PCA and to reveal its possible antibiofilm mechanisms using transcriptomic analysis. The results indicated that the minimum antibacterial concentration of PCA against V. parahaemolyticus was 300 μg/mL. PCA (9.375 μg/mL) inhibited biofilm generation and adhesion of the mature biofilm. PCA (75 μg/mL) significantly reduced the metabolic viability of V. parahaemolyticus, reduced polysaccharide production, and inhibited cell surface flagella-mediated swimming and aggregation phenotypes. Meanwhile, transcriptome analysis showed that the key genes of V. parahaemolyticus expressed under PCA (75 μg/mL) inhibition were mainly related to biofilm formation (pfkA, galE, narL, and oppA), polysaccharide production and adhesion (IF, fbpA, and yxeM), and motility (cheY, flrC, and fliA). By regulating these key genes, PCA reduced biofilm formation, suppressed polysaccharide production and transport, and prevented the adhesion of V. parahaemolyticus, thereby reducing the virulence of V. parahaemolyticus. This study demonstrated that protocatechuic aldehyde can be used to control V. parahaemolyticus biofilm to ensure food safety.

Abstract
Today, the increment in microbial resistance has guided the researches focus into new antimicrobial compounds or transmission systems. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is an opportunistic pathogen, producing a biofilm responsible for a wide range of nosocomial infections which are often difficult to eradicate with available antibiotics. On the other hand, Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon oil) (CO) is widely used as a natural antibacterial agent and Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are promising carriers for antibacterial compounds due to their lipophilic nature and ease of transmission through the bacterial cell wall. In this study, nanoparticles containing cinnamon oil (CO-SLN) were prepared by dual emulsion method and evaluated in terms of particle size, shape, entrapment efficiency (EE), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), oil release kinetics, and cell compatibility. The antibacterial activity of CO-SLN and CO against 10 drug-resistant E. coli strains was investigated. The anti-biofilm activity of CO-SLN on the selected pathogen was also investigated. Nanoparticles with an average size of 337.6 nm, and zeta potential of -26.6 mV were fabricated and their round shape was confirmed by TEM images. The antibacterial effects of CO-SLN and CO were reported with MIC Value of 60–75 µg/mL and 155–165 µg/mL and MBC value of 220–235 µg/ml and 540–560 µg/ml, respectively. On the other hand, CO-SLN with 1/2 MIC concentration had the greatest inhibition of biofilm formation in 24 h of incubation (55.25%). The data presented indicate that the MIC of CO-SLN has significantly reduced and it seems that SLN has facilitated and promoted CO transmission through the cell membrane.

Abstract
As the most important intestinal mucosal barrier of the main body, the innate immune barrier in intestinal tract plays especially pivotal roles in the overall health conditions of infants and young children; therefore, how to strengthen the innate immune barrier is pivotal. A variety of bioactivities of lactoferrin (LF) has been widely proved, including alleviating enteritis and inhibiting colon cancer; however, the effects of LF on intestinal immune barrier in infants and young children are still unclear, and the specific mechanism on how LF inhibits infantile enteritis by regulating immune signaling pathways is unrevealed. In the present study, we firstly performed pharmacokinetic analyses of LF in mice intestinal tissues, stomach tissues and blood, through different administration methods, to confirm the metabolic method of LF in mammals. Then we constructed in Vitro and in Vivo infantile intestinal immune barrier damage models utilizing lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and evaluated the effects of LF in alleviating LPS-induced intestinal immune barrier damage. Next, the related immune molecular mechanism on how LF exerted protective effects was investigated, through RNA-seq analyses of the mouse primary intestinal epithelial cells, and the specific genes were analyzed and screened out. Finally, the genes and their related immune pathway were validated in mRNA and protein levels; the portions of special immune cells (CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells) were also detected to further support our experimental results. Pharmacokinetic analyses demonstrated that the integrity of LF could reach mice stomach and intestine after oral gavage within 12 h, and the proper administration of LF should be the oral route. LF was proven to down-regulate the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines in both the primary intestinal epithelial cells and mice blood, especially LF without iron (Apo-LF), indicating LF alleviated infantile intestinal immune barrier damage induced by LPS. And through RNA-seq analyses of the mouse primary intestinal epithelial cells treated with LPS and LF, embryonic lethal abnormal vision Drosophila 1 (ELAVL1) was selected as one of the key genes, then the ELAVL1/PI3K/NF-κB pathway regulated by LF was verified to participate in the protection of infantile intestinal immune barrier damage in our study. Additionally, the ratio of blood CD4+/CD8+ T cells was significantly higher in the LF-treated mice than in the control mice, indicating that LF distinctly reinforced the overall immunity of infantile mice, further validating the strengthening bioactivity of LF on infantile intestinal immune barrier. In summary, LF was proven to alleviate LPS-induced intestinal immune barrier damage in young mice through regulating ELAVL1-related immune signaling pathways, which would expand current knowledge of the functions of bioactive proteins in foods within different research layers, as well as benefit preclinical and clinical researches in a long run.

Abstract
Foodborne pathogens have acquired the ability to produce biofilms to survive in hostile environments. This study evaluated biofilm formation, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and heavy metal tolerance of bacteria isolated from dairy and non-dairy food products. We aseptically collected and processed 200 dairy and non-dairy food specimens in peptone broth, incubated them overnight at 37 °C, and sub-cultured them on various culture media. Bacterial growth was identified with biochemical tests and API 20E and 20NE strips. The AMR of the isolates was observed against different antibacterial drug classes. Biofilm formation was detected with the crystal violet tube method. Heavy metal salts were used at concentrations of 250−1500 µg/100 mL to observe heavy metal tolerance. We isolated 180 (50.4%) bacteria from dairy and 177 (49.6%) from non-dairy food samples. The average colony-forming unit (CFU) count for dairy and non-dairy samples was 2.9 ± 0.9 log CFU/mL and 5.1 ± 0.3 log CFU/mL, respectively. Corynebacterium kutscheri (n = 74), lactobacilli (n = 73), and Staphylococcus aureus (n = 56) were the predominant Gram-positive and Shigella (n = 10) the predominant Gram-negative bacteria isolated. The correlation between biofilm formation and AMR was significant (p < 0.05) for most cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. Heavy metal tolerance tended to be higher in biofilm producers at different metal concentrations. The pathogens isolated from dairy and non-dairy food showed a high burden of AMR, high propensity for biofilm formation, and heavy metal tolerance, and pose an imminent threat to public health.

Abstract
Biofilms pose a serious public health hazard with a significant economic impact on the food industry. The present scoping review is designed to analyze the literature published during 2001-2020 on biofilm formation of microbes, their detection methods, and association with antimicrobial resistance (if any). The peer-reviewed articles retrieved from 04 electronic databases were assessed using PRISMA-ScR guidelines. From the 978 preliminary search results, a total of 88 publications were included in the study. On analysis, the commonly isolated pathogens were Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Bacillus spp., Vibrio spp., Campylobacter jejuni and Clostridium perfringens. The biofilm-forming ability of microbes was found to be influenced by various factors such as attachment surfaces, temperature, presence of other species, nutrient availability etc. A total of 18 studies characterized the biofilm-forming genes, particularly for S. aureus, Salmonella spp., and E. coli. In most studies, polystyrene plate and/or stainless-steel coupons were used for biofilm formation, and the detection was carried out by crystal violet assays and/or by plate counting method. The strain-specific significant differences in biofilm formation were observed in many studies, and few studies carried out analysis of multi-species biofilms. The association between biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance wasn't clearly defined. Further, viable but non-culturable (VBNC) form of the foodborne pathogens is posing an unseen (by conventional cultivation techniques) but potent threat food safety. The present review recommends the need for carrying out systematic surveys and risk analysis of biofilms in food chain to highlight the evidence-based public health concerns, especially in regions where microbiological food hazards are quite prevalent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the distribution of class 1 integrons and their variable regional molecular characteristics, as well as the diversity of promoter and drug sensitivity of CR-Eco (carbapenem-resistant E. coli) strains. METHOD A total of 117 CR-Eco strains, collected between 2012.01 and 2019.12, underwent fully automated bacterial identification and sensitization using VITEK-2 Compact and supplemented by K-B assay. PCR was employed to screen for class 1 integrase genes and integron variable regions, while the promoter type and variable region gene cassette characteristics were determined by sequencing analysis. RESULTS The positive rate of the class 1 integron of the CR-Eco strains was 83.70% (92/117) herein. Moreover, class 1 integrase-positive strains exhibited statistically significant resistance to aztreonam, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, gentamicin, meropenem, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole compared to integron-negative strains (P < 0.05). Variable regions were observed in 77 of the 92 class 1 integrase-positive strains. In addition, seven gene cassettes were detected, namely dfrA17-aadA5, aadA22, dfrA12-aadA2, dfrA12, dfrA17, dfrA27 and aadA. Finally, five types of class 1 integron variable region promoters were identified in those 77 strains, including PcW, PcH1, PcWTGN-10, PcH1TGN-10, and P2, which were detected in 48, 18, 8, 2, and 1 strains, respectively. CONCLUSION The primary integrator variable region gene cassettes of this class were dfrA and aadA. The integron-positive strains displayed simultaneous high resistance to multiple antimicrobial drugs. The integrator variable region promoters of the CR-Eco strains are primarily weak and can potentially form and spread drug resistance.

Abstract
Diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) strains are important causes of gastrointestinal diseases worldwide, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to investigate the presence, antibiotic resistance, and potential biofilm formation in dairy products in Isfahan, Iran. A total of 200 samples, including traditional and pasteurized dairy products, were analyzed. In 200 samples, 54 E. coli isolates, including (48/110) and (6/90) positive samples of traditional and pasteurized dairy products, were detected. Furthermore, pathogenic strains were isolated from 30% of traditional dairy products and 5.55% of pasteurized dairy products. Most isolates were classified as enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). Moreover, antibiotic resistance was evaluated using the disk diffusion method for pathogenic E. coli. Overall, 73.68% of contaminated samples by pathogenic strains were resistant to at least one antibiotic. The highest resistance was observed against streptomycin (57.9%), followed by tetracycline (50%). Additionally, all isolates were sensitive to amikacin. For evaluating biofilm formation, the violet crystal assay was applied on a polystyrene microplate well for pathogenic isolates. In total, 68.42% of isolates were able to form biofilms. The presence of E. coli in dairy products indicates potential health risks for Iranian consumers. Serious measures are needed to control and prevent the spread of this pathogen.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of penicillin G (PENG) on the fate of bacterial communities and β-lactamase antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during chicken manure composting were assessed, to illustrate the roles of PENG in ARGs behavior. The results showed that the total absolute abundances of 9 ARGs and 4 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was significantly increased by PENG (P < 0.05). Dozens of potential hosts for ARGs were predominantly affiliated with Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Meanwhile, the higher concentration of PENG significantly increased the abundance of luxI and luxS in quorum sensing (QS) (P < 0.05), which enhanced the frequency of inter/intraspecific gene "communication." Redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling further revealed that QS had a strong regulatory role in horizontal gene transfer of ARGs mediated via MGEs. These results provide new insight into the mechanism of ARGs propagation in aerobic composting modified by PENG.

A global systematic review and meta-analysis on correlation between Biofilm producers and Non-biofilm producers with antibiotic resistance in Uropathogenic Escherichiacoli. Abstract
Escherichia coli accounts for nearly 80% of community-acquired and 50% of hospital-acquired urinary tract infections (UTI). This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between biofilm producers and Non-biofilm producers with antibiotic resistance in Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) isolated from patients with UTI globally. The search was conducted between 1st 2000 to 30th October 2021 in various databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of sciences, and Google Scholar) with suitable MeSH terms, and text words. Then, after applying the appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria on the studies for their selection, the data were analyzed by CMA software. Thirty-seven studies met the eligibility criteria to include. The pooled prevalence of ESBL and MDR isolates were reported 37.9%, and 65.8%, respectively. Biofilm formation varied between 13.3% and 99% all over the world. A total of 74.4% of all isolates were biofilm producers, out of which 28.6%, 35.2%, and 38.6% showed strong, moderate, and weak biofilm. The highest and lowest resistance was against Amoxicillin and Meropenem with the prevalence of 80.8%, and 13%, respectively. Fourteen out of 17(82.35%) studies reported a positive correlation between biofilm and antibiotic resistance. Findings showed high numbers of isolates were able to form biofilm, which is one of the factors of antibiotic resistance, and this has been confirmed by the positive significant correlation between biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance that has been reported by studies included. Therefore, due to the importance of biofilm in the etiology of UTI caused by UPEC, it should be prevented; consequently, bacterial resistance can be reduced and controlled.

Abstract
Biofilm formation by E. coli is a serious threat to meat processing plants. Chemical disinfectants often fail to eliminate biofilms; thus, bacteriophages are a promising alternative to solve this problem, since they are widely distributed, environmentally friendly, and nontoxic to humans. In this study, the biofilm formation of 10 E. coli strains isolated from the meat industry and E. coli ATCC BAA-1430 and ATCC 11303 were evaluated. Three strains, isolated from the meat contact surfaces, showed adhesion ability and produced extracellular polymeric substances. Biofilms of these three strains were developed onto stainless steel (SS) surfaces and enumerated at 2, 12, 24, 48, and 120 h, and were visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Subsequently, three bacteriophages showing podovirus morphology were isolated from ground beef and poultry liver samples, which showed lytic activity against the abovementioned biofilm-forming strains. SS surfaces with biofilms of 2, 14, and 48 h maturity were treated with mixed and individual bacteriophages at 8 and 9 log10 PFU/mL for 1 h. The results showed reductions greater than 6 log10 CFU/cm2 as a result of exposing SS surfaces with biofilms of 24 h maturity to 9 log10 PFU/mL of bacteriophages; however, the E. coli and bacteriophage strains, phage concentration, and biofilm development stage had significant effects on biofilm reduction (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the isolated bacteriophages showed effectiveness at reducing biofilms of isolated E. coli; however, it is necessary to increase the libraries of phages with lytic activity against the strains isolated from production environments.

Abstract
Proteus mirabilis is an opportunistic pathogen associated with a variety of infections in humans, especially those in the urinary tract. The isolation of this pathogen in foods of animal origin such as meat is poorly documented and should not be neglected, in view of the zoonotic risk that this can pose to human health. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, virulence profile, and similarity between P. mirabilis strains isolated from chicken, beef, and pork meat and those causing community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTI-CA), in order to better understand the role of this bacterium as a zoonotic pathogen. P. mirabilis was isolated from the three types of meat and was found to be more prevalent in chicken. All isolates exhibited several genotypic and phenotypic virulence characteristics, such as adhesion capacity in HEp-2 cell culture, biofilm formation, cytotoxicity in Vero cells and genes that express fimbriae (mrpA, pmfA, ucaA, atfA), hemolysin (hpmA), proteases (zapA and ptA) and siderophore receptor (ireA). UTI-CA strains showed a higher prevalence of ucaA and ireA genes, whereas those from the chicken meat had a higher prevalence of the atfA gene compared with the isolates from the beef and pork meat. It was observed that chicken meat and UTI-CA strains mainly formed very strong biofilms, whereas strains isolated from beef and pork formed more weak and moderate biofilms. Several strains from meat showed close genetic similarity to those from UTI-CA and had the same virulence profiles. Thus, meats may be an important source of the dissemination of P. mirabilis responsible for causing UTIs in the community.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of 20 strains of S. Heidelberg (SH) isolated from broilers produced in southern Brazil. The similarity and presence of genetic determinants linked to virulence, antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, and in silico-predicted metabolic interactions revealed this serovar as a threat to public health. The presence of the ompC, invA, sodC, avrA, lpfA, and agfA genes was detected in 100% of the strains and the luxS gene in 70% of them. None of the strains carries the blaSHV, mcr-1, qnrA, qnrB, and qnrS genes. All strains showed a multidrug-resistant profile to at least three non-β-lactam drugs, which include colistin, sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline. Resistance to penicillin, ceftriaxone (90%), meropenem (25%), and cefoxitin (25%) were associated with the presence of blaCTX–M and blaCMY–2 genes. Biofilm formation reached a mature stage at 25 and 37°C, especially with chicken juice (CJ) addition. The sodium hypochlorite 1% was the least efficient in controlling the sessile cells. Genomic analysis of two strains identified more than 100 virulence genes and the presence of resistance to 24 classes of antibiotics correlated to phenotypic tests. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) prediction shows two metabolic pathways correlation with biofilm formation. Virulence, resistance, and biofilm determinants must be constant monitoring in SH, due to the possibility of occurring infections extremely difficult to cure and due risk of the maintenance of the bacterium in production environments.

Abstract
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an enteric pathogen associated with human gastroenteritis outbreaks. Extensive use of antibiotics in agriculture selects resistant bacteria that may enter the food chain and potentially causes foodborne illnesses in humans that are less likely to respond to treatment with conventional antibiotics. Due to the importance of antibiotic resistance, this study aimed to investigate the combination of phenotypic and genotypic antibiotic resistance in STEC isolates belonging to serogroups O26, O45, O103, O104, O111, O121, O145, and O157 using disc diffusion and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), respectively. All strains were phenotypically resistant to at least one antibiotic, with 100% resistance to erythromycin, followed by gentamicin (98%), streptomycin (82%), kanamycin (76%), and ampicillin (72%). The distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the STEC strains was ampC (47%), aadA1 (70%), ere(A) (88%), blaSHV (19%), blaCMY (27%), aac(3)-I (90%), and tet(A) (35%), respectively. The results suggest that most of the strains were multidrug-resistant (MDR) and the most often observed resistant pattern was of aadA1, ere(A), and aac(3)-I genes. These findings indicate the significance of monitoring the prevalence of MDR in both animals and humans around the globe. Hence, with a better understanding of antibiotic genotypes and phenotypes among the diverse STEC strains obtained, this study could guide the administration of antimicrobial drugs in STEC infections when necessary.
