Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to examine parent-reported ratings of temperament in toddlers with and without prelingual hearing loss. METHOD The parent-completed Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) was used to assess temperament in toddlers aged 18-36 months. Three dimensions of temperament were examined: surgency, negative affectivity, and effortful control. Analyses were conducted to (a) examine differences in temperament across toddlers with and without prelingual hearing loss; (b) examine possible associations between temperament, demographic, and communication factors; and (c) determine if the ECBQ is sensitive to differences in hearing, communication, and listening skills among toddlers with prelingual hearing loss. RESULTS The parent-completed ECBQ revealed that toddlers with prelingual hearing loss differed from their hearing peers on some but not all dimensions of temperament. Specifically, children with prelingual hearing loss were rated as displaying higher levels of surgency and lower levels of effortful control but comparable levels of negative affectivity when compared to their hearing peers. Regression analyses revealed that chronological age and communication strategy predicted scores of effortful control in toddlers with prelingual hearing loss, whereas chronological age alone predicted scores of effortful control in toddlers with hearing. Finally, the ECBQ appears to contain "listening" items that skew (lower) levels of effortful control in toddlers with prelingual hearing loss, such that only the group effect of higher levels of surgency remained after removing these "listening" items. Correlations between the original and our modified ECBQ (removing the "listening" items) revealed strong associations, reflective of high construct validity. CONCLUSIONS This was the first study to measure temperament in toddlers with prelingual hearing loss using the ECBQ. Our results revealed differences between children with and without prelingual hearing loss centering on the dimension of surgency. Examining differences in temperament during the toddler period of development may be particularly important and useful for predicting functional outcomes following prelingual hearing loss.

Abstract
Motivation Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss interferes with a child's development at the cognitive, linguistic, academic, and social levels. Since the beginning of the pediatric auditory rehabilitation program through cochlear implantation in the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Service of the Coimbra Hospital and University Center (CHUC), Portugal, its mentors defended the early diagnosis of hearing loss followed by timely intervention, and this was considered the starting point to optimize (re)habilitation through this method. Three decades or so later, recently we conducted this study to evaluate the performance of patients implanted in the initial phase of the cochlear implantation program. Objectives The study aimed to evaluate the performance of individuals with severe to profound congenital hearing loss who underwent pediatric cochlear implantation and have used the cochlear implant for at least 25 years, to analyze the beneficial effect of early intervention in improving performance results. Methods The study sample is composed of 31 individuals with severe to profound congenital hearing loss and no other comorbidities, divided into two groups (Group 1: age at implantation was under 3 years; Group 2: age at implantation was over 3 years). All 31 subjects were evaluated at 15, 20, and 25 years of cochlear implant (CI) use with a comprehensive set of tests. In addition, data were collected regarding the academic level of each participant. The results of both groups were compared to find out if there is an effect of age at implantation on auditory performance, and if there is an improvement in the performance with CI over time (15, 20, and 25 years of use). Results The results show that there is a positive effect, with statistical significance, of early implantation on auditory performance, and telephone use. In both groups, there is an increase in performance over time, but it tends to stabilize after 20 years of CI use. Discussion and conclusion The results obtained in this work support the importance of early intervention in patients with severe to profound hearing loss who are cochlear implant users and show that CI is an effective and reliable method in the treatment of these patients, contributing to their improved socio-educational integration, and that the benefits last over time.

Abstract
Importance Cochlear implants (CIs) have been shown to be effective in improving auditory skills and speech and language development. However, less is known about the long-term outcomes of CIs on educational functioning or quality of life. Objective To evaluate long-term educational outcomes and quality of life in adolescents over 13 years postimplantation. Design, Setting, and Participants This longitudinal cohort study included 188 children with bilateral severe to profound hearing loss with CIs from the Childhood Development After Cochlear Implantation (CDaCI) study from hospital-based CI programs; a cohort of 340 children with severe to profound hearing loss without CIs from a nationally representative survey (National Longitudinal Transition Study-2; NLTS-2), and results from the literature of comparable children without CIs. Exposure(s) Cochlear implantation (early and late). Main Outcomes and Measures Adolescent performance on measures of academic achievement (Woodcock Johnson), language (Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language), and quality of life (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, Youth Quality of Life Instrument-Deaf and Hard of Hearing). Results The CDaCI cohort included 188 children, 136 of whom completed the wave 3 postimplantation follow-up visits (77 [55%] female) with CIs; mean [SD] age was 11.47 [1.27] years. The NLTS-2 cohort included 340 children (50% female) with severe to profound hearing loss without CIs. Children with CIs had better academic performance compared with children without CIs with similar levels of hearing loss. The largest benefits were seen for children who received implants early (prior to age 18 months), who performed at or above age and gender norms for language and academic achievement. Similarly, adolescents with CIs reported better quality of life on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory compared with children without CIs. On a condition-specific measure (Youth Quality of Life Instrument-Deaf and Hard of Hearing), children who received implants early scored higher across all 3 domains than comparisons without CIs. Conclusions and Relevance To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate long-term educational outcomes and quality of life in adolescents using CIs. This longitudinal cohort study showed better outcomes of CIs in terms of language, academic performance, and quality of life. While the greatest benefits were observed for children who received implants before age 18 months, benefits were also noted for children who received implants later, providing evidence that children with severe to profound hearing loss with CIs can achieve at or above expected levels compared with hearing peers.

Abstract
Sensory perturbation in one modality results in the adaptive reorganization of neural pathways within the spared modalities, a phenomenon known as "crossmodal plasticity," which has been examined during or after the classic "critical period." Because peripheral perturbations can alter the auditory cortex (ACX) activity and functional connectivity of the ACX subplate neurons (SPNs) even before the critical period, called the precritical period, we investigated if retinal deprivation at birth crossmodally alters the ACX activity and SPN circuits during the precritical period. We deprived newborn mice of visual inputs after birth by performing bilateral enucleation. We performed in vivo widefield imaging in the ACX of awake pups during the first two postnatal weeks to investigate cortical activity. We found that enucleation alters spontaneous and sound-evoked activities in the ACX in an age-dependent manner. Next, we performed whole-cell patch clamp recording combined with laser scanning photostimulation in ACX slices to investigate circuit changes in SPNs. We found that enucleation alters the intracortical inhibitory circuits impinging on SPNs, shifting the excitation-inhibition balance toward excitation and this shift persists after ear opening. Together, our results indicate that crossmodal functional changes exist in the developing sensory cortices at early ages before the onset of the classic critical period.

Abstract
The peripheral and central auditory subsystems together form a complex sensory network that allows an organism to hear. The genetic programs of the two subsystems must therefore be tightly coordinated during development. Yet, their interactions and common expression pathways have never been systematically explored. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression and are essential for normal development of the auditory system. We performed mRNA and small-RNA sequencing of organs from both auditory subsystems at three critical developmental timepoints (E16, P0, P16) to obtain a comprehensive and unbiased insight of their expression profiles. Our analysis reveals common and organ-specific expression patterns for differentially regulated mRNAs and miRNAs, which could be clustered with a particular selection of functions such as inner ear development, Wnt signalling, K+ transport, and axon guidance, based on gene ontology. Bioinformatics detected enrichment of predicted targets of specific miRNAs in the clusters and predicted regulatory interactions by monitoring opposite trends of expression of miRNAs and their targets. This approach identified six miRNAs as strong regulatory candidates for both subsystems. Among them was miR-96, an established critical factor for proper development in both subsystems, demonstrating the strength of our approach. We suggest that other miRNAs identified by this analysis are also common effectors of proper hearing acquirement. This first combined comprehensive analysis of the developmental program of the peripheral and central auditory systems provides important data and bioinformatics insights into the shared genetic program of the two sensory subsystems and their regulation by miRNAs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the incidence of brain abnormalities in a cohort of prelingually deaf children and whether these abnormalities can impact the hearing outcomes of patients eligible for cochlear implantation (CI). METHODS We performed a retrospective review of consecutive medical charts of prelingually deaf children under 12 years of age who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during their preoperative workup for CI surgery. We used the category of auditory performance (CAP) test and the speech intelligibility rating (SIR) test to assess the hearing and speech performance of the children, respectively. RESULTS The MRIs of 285 patients, 174 boys and 111 girls with a mean age of 36.4 (±16) months, were evaluated for this study. We identified 31 patients with abnormal findings (10.88%): (17/31) (54.8%) had MRI brain abnormalities, (9/31) (29%) had inner ear anomalies, and (5/31) (16.1%) had both inner ear and brain abnormalities. The most frequent inner ear anomaly was an enlarged vestibular aqueduct, while white matter lesions were the most common brain abnormality. The CAP and SIR mean score of patients with inner ear anomalies was slightly, but not significantly, higher than those of patients with brain abnormalities. CONCLUSION CAP and SIR scores were not significantly different in children with brain abnormalities than inner ear anomalies. These patients can still benefit from CI to improve their overall hearing and speech performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the results of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaire scores from deaf children fitted with at least one cochlear implant (CI) and compare responses to normal-hearing age-peers (NHP) and to their parents. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 33 pediatric patients with a hearing experience of at least 1 year with CI and a control group of 21 NHP. The KINDLR questionnaire for measuring HRQoL (generic) in children (7-12years) and adolescents (13-17years) and a CI questionnaire (specific) were completed by CI users and their parents. Scores were transformed to a 100-point scale with 100 representing the most positive response. RESULTS The group of children and adolescents with CI reached a similar score in the generic HRQoL (Children:78,6; Adolescents:80,4; p = 0,35) and in the overall CI questionnaire (Children:77,6; Adolescents:75,6; p = 0,53). CI users in both age groups scored generic HRQoL similarly to their NHP (NH children:82,2, p = 0,18; NH adolescents:77,5; p = 0,07) and higher than CI users from other centers (OC) (OC children:75,4; OC adolescents:70,3). CI users scored their school domain lower than their NHP (p = 0,04). Generic and CI questionnaire scores of parents and their children correlated positively (r = 0,66, p = 0,00 and r = 0,73, p = 0,00). The total scores of HRQoL in the self-rating and parent rating correlate with none of the variables at study (gender, cause of deafness, age at implantation, years with a CI, chronological age) except with speech progression (p = 0,007). CONCLUSIONS Children with CI experience similar quality of life as NHP. Parents are reliable reporters on the status of their child's overall quality of life.

Abstract
It has been forty years since the first multi-channel cochlear implant was used in Australia. While heralded in the hearing world as one of the greatest inventions in modern medicine, not everyone reflects on this achievement with enthusiasm. For many people in the Deaf community, they see the cochlear implant as a tool that reinforces a social construct that pathologizes deafness and removes Deaf identity. In this paper, I set out the main arguments for and against cochlear implantation. While I conclude that, on balance, cochlear implants improve the well-being and broaden the open futures of deaf children, this does not justify mandating implants in circumstances where parents refuse them because this may compound unintended harms when society interferes in the parent-child relationship. For this reason, I argue that parental refusal of cochlear implantation falls within Gillam's concept of the zone of parental discretion.

Abstract
Spoken language outcomes after cochlear implantation are highly variable. Some variance can be attributed to individual characteristics. Research with typically hearing children suggests that the amount of language directed to children may also play a role. However, several moderating factors may complicate the association between language input and language outcomes in children with cochlear implants. In this article, I present a conceptual framework that posits that the association between total language input directed to children and language outcomes is moderated by factors that influence what is accessible, attended to, and coordinated with the child. The framework also posits that children with cochlear implants exhibit more variability on those moderating factors, which explains why the relation between language input and language outcomes may be more complex even if language input is more important for successful language outcomes in this population.

Abstract
Background: While a cochlear implant (CI) can restore access to audibility in deaf children, implanted children may still have difficulty in concentrating. Previous studies have revealed a close relationship between sensory gating and attention. However, whether CI children have deficient auditory sensory gating remains unclear. Methods: To address this issue, we measured the event-related potentials (ERPs), including P50, N100, and P200, evoked by paired tone bursts (S1 and S2) in CI children and normal-hearing (NH) controls. Suppressed amplitudes for S2 compared with S1 in these three ERPs reflected sensory gating during early and later phases, respectively. A Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham IV (SNAP-IV) scale was performed to assess the attentional performance. Results: Significant amplitude differences between S1 and S2 in N100 and P200 were observed in both NH and CI children, indicating the presence of sensory gating in the two groups. However, the P50 suppression was only found in NH children and not in CI children. Furthermore, the duration of deafness was significantly positively correlated with the score of inattention in CI children. Conclusion: Auditory sensory gating can develop but is deficient during the early phase in CI children. Long-term auditory deprivation has a negative effect on sensory gating and attentional performance.

Abstract
Extensive research has demonstrated the benefits of cochlear implants (CI) in contributing to improve the linguistic skills of children with hearing impairment; however, few studies have focused on the development of pragmatic ability and its relationship with age of implantation. Pragmatics is the ability to use language in different contexts and its development has crucial implications, e.g., social inclusion and professional attainments. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of pragmatic ability using the Language Pragmatic Abilities (APL Medea), a battery composed by five different tasks: Comprehension of Metaphors, Implicit meaning, Comics, Situations and Colors Game (a perspective taking task). Eighteen children with early CI, belonging to 3 different age groups (6; 11-7; 11, 8; 0-8; 11 and 9; 0-9; 11 years-old), and twenty-four children with typical development (Control Group) participated to the study. We also investigated how the precocity of CI, i.e., age of first implantation, may affect the pragmatic development. Globally, children with CI obtained lower scores in the APL Medea battery than typically hearing children. However, focusing on the Medea tasks separately, children with CIs differed from their hearing peers only in Comics and Colors Game tasks. Finally, age of implantation was a moderate but significant predictor of pragmatic performance.

Abstract
Compared with children having normal hearing (NH), those with cochlear implants (CIs) perform poorly in spoken language comprehension which involves both low-level acoustic encoding and higher-level cognitive processing. Here, we performed an electroencephalography study to portray this brain dynamics of speech perception in CI children. We presented a Mandarin Chinese monosyllable or four-syllable idiom to CI and NH children, and infrequently varied its lexical tone to form a novel monosyllable or pseudo-idiom in an oddball paradigm. The tone contrast embedded in the monosyllables evoked similar mismatch negativities (MMNs) in CI and NH children at an early stage (~200 ms). However, the amplitude of the MMN evoked by the tone contrast in the idiom context was significantly lower in CI children than in NH children. Furthermore, robust late discriminative negativity (LDN) at a late stage (~500 ms) was found only in NH children, but not in CI children. The MMN and LDN findings indicate deficits of low-level acoustic encoding in a complex context (such as an idiom) and higher-level cognitive processing in CI children, respectively. Both deficient sensory and cognitive processing may contribute to the speech perception difficulties in CI children.

Abstract
Objective: Parental views about the outcomes of implantation on the child's quality of life are valuable sources of information for implantation specialists. The aim at this study was to validate the "Parental Perspectives" questionnaire in Persian language.Design: The original questionnaire was translated from English to Persian language; the final Persian version of questionnaire was prepared and evaluated for validity and reliability. The internal consistency of the questionnaire and test-retest reliability were respectively evaluated by Cronbach's alpha and ICC index. Factor analysis was used to determine the construct validity.Study Sample: The participants of this study were 370 parents of CI children.Results: Sampling adequacy for executing of factor analysis was confirmed by the results of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (=0.84) and Bartlett test (p < .05). Three factors were extracted from exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the accuracy of the three-dimensional structures. Principal component analysis revealed the structural validity of three factors. Correlation between questionnaire items was good (r = 0.76). Reliability coefficient was calculated as 0.93.Conclusions: The Persian version of the questionnaire has good validity and reliability and can be used to examine the perspectives of the parents about CI.

Abstract
Cochlear implantation is a safe and reliable treatment for children with severe to profound hearing loss. The primary benefit of these medical devices in children is the acquisition of hearing, which promotes development of spoken language. The present paper reviews published literature demonstrating predictive effects of a number of factors on acquisition of hearing development and speech recognition. Of the many variables that contribute to an individual child's development after implantation, age at implantation, the presence of medical comorbidities, social determinants of health, and the provision of bilateral versus unilateral hearing are those that can vary widely and have consistently shown clear impacts. Specifically, age of implantation is crucial to reduce effects of deafness on the developing auditory system and capture the remarkable plasticity of early development. Language development after cochlear implantation requires therapy emphasizing hearing and oral communication, education, and other support which can be influenced by known social determinants of health; specifically, outcomes in children decline with reductions in socioeconomic status and levels of parental education. Medical co-morbidities also slow rates of progress after cochlear implantation. On the other hand, benefits of implantation increase in children who are provided with access to hearing from both ears. In sum, cochlear implants promote development of hearing in children and the best outcomes are achieved by providing early access to sound in both ears. These benefits can be limited by known social determinants of health which restrict access to needed support and medical comorbidities which add further complexity in care and outcome.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the auditory performance and speech intelligibility of 100 children with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss up to 3 years after cochlear implantation.Methods: A cohort study was established consisting of 100 children who received cochlear implantation at Shandong Ear Nose and Throat Hospital from 2012 to 2015. Children were examined after 1 month, 1, 2, and 3 years of implantation to assess auditory performance and speech intelligibility using standard tools. The paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to assess whether the scores obtained at different testing points differed significantly. The Mann-Whitney test was utilized to examine the between-group differences (e.g., age at implantation).Results: Three years after implantation, 60% out of 100 children reached the maximal category (7) of categorical auditory performance and 37% achieved the highest category (5) of speech intelligibility rating. Significant improvements were found over time in categorical auditory performance category and speech intelligibility rating (from month 1 to year 1, p < 0.001; from year 1 to year 2, p < 0.001; and from year 2 to year 3, p < 0.001). Larger improvements in auditory outcomes and speech intelligibility were observed in children with a younger age at implantation and those who received speech therapy.Conclusions: Cochlear implantation appears to make a significant, positive contribution to the development of communication skills of young congenital and prelingually deaf children in China. These improvements continue for up to 3 years after implantation. Positive outcomes appear to be associated with earlier age at implantation and receipt of speech therapy.Implications for rehabilitationBilateral sensorineural hearing loss.Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss in children can cause delay in speech development, poor language skills and potentially disorders in psychological behaviour and social isolation.Cochlear implantation (CI) is an effective strategy that helps children with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss gain the ability to hear and continue to develop language.This study shows that the auditory performance and speech intelligibility of deaf children who speak Mandarin continued to improve up to 3 years of implantation, when follow-up ceased.

Abstract
The advent of cochlear implants has enormously improved the quality of sensory perception in deaf children. Notwithstanding these advantages, the current literature shows a substantial variability in language proficiency among implanted children. This case series explores the variability of language acquisition in congenitally deaf children with cochlear implants. We report 4 prelingually deaf children (mean age = 10.5; SD = 1.08), affected by a genetically determined bilateral deafness, due to GJB2 gene mutation Cx26. Each implanted child underwent a systematic assessment of speech perception and production, as well as of lexical, morphologic, and syntactic skills in both comprehension and production. Notwithstanding similar clinical histories and similarly good postimplant pure-tone audiometry, two of the four children fared very poorly in speech audiometry, whereas the other two children gained very good results. We suggest that the language impairment detected in (some) implanted children may not be fully accounted for by pure auditory thresholds and that may be the outcome of concomitant damage to core components of the child's linguistic brain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children with cochlear implants (CIs) from the parental perspective. The secondary objective was to explore possible relationships between demographic variables (such as age at assessment, gender, age at implantation, and duration of language rehabilitation) and the HRQoL. The third objective was to determine the developmental trajectories of HRQoL. DESIGN This study included parents of 123 children with CIs (mean age, 40.45 months; mean age of CI implantation, 24.74 months; mean device experience, 16.34 months). The time periods for follow-up were at 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12-month intervals of CI use. The Mandarin Children with Cochlear Implants: Parental Perspectives questionnaire was employed to assess HRQoL. RESULTS Parents were satisfied with HRQoL, especially with the domain of social relations; however, education received a less positive rating. The duration of CI use was positively correlated with 5 domains, suggesting that children who used CIs for a longer time had higher HRQoL ratings. Children with longer language rehabilitation received more positive ratings in the domains of social relations and education (p < 0.05); children whose mothers had higher education levels received more positive ratings in the domain of general functioning (p < 0.05); children living in cities received more positive ratings in the domains of communication, general functioning and self-reliance (p < 0.05). Girls received more positive rating than boys in the domain of well-being (p < 0.05). No significant correlation was found between age at implantation, age at assessment, only child status, and HRQoL. All domains showed clear increases in the duration of CI use; the majority of the domains showed steeper progress over the first 3 months of CI use. Communication exhibited the most rapid progress, with education progressing at a slower rate. CONCLUSIONS Parents were satisfied with all domains of HRQoL. Almost all domains exhibited rapid progress over the first 3 months of CI use, with education progressing at a slower rate. This research underscores the importance of language rehabilitation by revealing that strengthening language rehabilitation could be an effective means of improving the HRQoL of children with CIs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been suggested that children with higher degree of hearing loss may show more severe externalizing (e.g., aggression) and internalizing (e.g., depression and anxiety) behavioral problems compared to that of their normally hearing peers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of sound amplification through cochlear implants (CIs) on aggressive behaviors in Persian children. METHODS During a prospective study design, 72 children (40 girls, 32 boys) who underwent unilateral implantation and 72 (40 girls, 32 boys) age-matched normally hearing children (control group) participated. All CI children had age of <4 years at the time of implantation. The Aggression Scale for Preschoolers (ASFP) was utilized to measure various types of aggression including verbal aggression, physical aggression, relational aggression, and impulsive anger. The speech performance of children was also evaluated using Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR). The ASFP and SIR measurements were conducted at the pre-implantation phase and at 6, 12, and 18 months post-implantation period. RESULTS A repeated measures analysis of variance showed significant reduction in ASFP scores from "pre-operation" to "post-operative" conditions in CI group. However, aggression level in CI recipients were significantly higher than children in control group. In the analyses of ASFP subscales, we found a reduction and a consequent improvement in verbal aggression, physical aggression and impulsive anger. However, no significant difference was found in relational aggression across various time intervals. Furthermore, children who received CI before 2 years old exhibited better aggression level than children who received their devices at later ages. The significantly negative correlation (r = -0.76, p < 0.001) was found between the SIR and ASFP scores, so that lower speech intelligibity ability scores were associated with more aggressive behavior problems. CONCLUSION This study suggests that young children with noticeable degree of hearing loss may experience higher level of aggression compared to normally hearing peers. However, when they undergo early implantation and attend at regular post-operative rehabilitation programs, their aggression status will improve seriously.

Abstract
Background. Cochlear implantation (CI) is the main treatment method for deaf children. CI influences not only communication, but also psychosocial outcomes in children with severe to profound hearing loss. Focusing on issues specific to CI (e.g., self-reliance, social relations, education) may provide a more accurate and relative view of functional status of paediatric cochlear implant users. The objectives of this study were to translate into Lithuanian and adapt an international questionnaire of the quality of life after cochlear implantation and to evaluate parental perspectives regarding CI and the child’s progress after a minimum of two years after surgery. Materials and methods. The parental questionnaire The Children with Cochlear Implants: Parental Perspectives CCIPP was used to evaluate the quality of life following cochlear implantation. The questionnaire includes 74 items covering two main domains: decision-making (26 items) and the outcomes of implantation (48 items). Quality of life is estimated according to the scores of eight sub-domains: communication, general functioning, well-being, self-reliance, social relations, education, effects of implantation, and supporting the child. Results. The paediatric sample consisted of 11 (39%) girls and 17 (61%) boys, whose mean age at the time of cochlear implantation was 2.41 ± 2.25 years, mean duration of the implant use 3.7 ± 1.3 years. All the grand means in the outcomes of implantation domain exceeded 3 on the 5-point scale, meaning that parents viewed the quality of life of their children as either average or better. Parents rated the sub-domains of communication (3.90 ± 0.77 points), social relations (4.05 ± 0.41), and supporting the child (3.89 ± 0.49) most positively. Conclusions. According to parents, the quality of life improves after the cochlear implantation, especially in the fields of communication, social relations and supporting the child.

Abstract
To evaluate the impact of cochlear implants on the school failure of deaf who attend mainstream classes by comparing them to their normal-hearing peers as well as deaf without cochlear implants. This case–control study included participants aged 8–18 years. The number of school years failed was obtained from school records. The greatest differences in achievement levels were found between hearing students and those who were deaf without cochlear implants. Cochlear implants provide educational opportunities for hearing-impaired students, yet those without cochlear implants remain at a great disadvantage. These findings suggest that measures promoting greater equity and quality for all deaf students allow achievement levels closer to those of the not impaired.

Abstract
Les implants cochléaires sont des prothèses électro-acoustiques qui ont pour rôle de pallier une déficience bilatérale de l'oreille interne, qu'elle soit profonde ou sévère, acquise ou congénitale. Nous rapportons l'expérience du service d'Oto-rhino-laryngologie et de chirurgie cervico-faciale de l'hôpital universitaire Mohammed VI de Marrakech, dont l'objectif est d'évaluer l'implantation cochléaire et de préciser les facteurs influençant les résultats dans notre pratique. Le profil APCEI a été utilisé pour évaluer les résultats orthophoniques. Il s'agit d'une étude rétrospective étalée sur une période de 7 ans (Décembre 2007 à Décembre 2014). Durant cette période; 54 patients ont été implantés et suivient dans notre formation. Il s'agit de 30 filles et 24 garçons atteints d'une surdité sévères à profonde bilatérale, dont 48 enfants avaient une surdité pré-linguale. L'âge moyen d'implantation cochléaire pédiatrique était de 5,15 ans. L'implantation était unilatérale chez tous les patients. L'intervention était suivie par des réglages et une rééducation orthophonique régulière. L'évaluation était réalisée par la même équipe chaque mois durant les premiers 6 mois, puis tous les 6 mois. La durée moyenne de suivi était de 30,86 mois. Tous les patients ont tiré un bénéfice de leurs implants avec une variabilité interindividuelle. Les bons résultats étaient corrélés à l'implantation précoce, à un investissement parental important et au un bon suivi de la rééducation orthophonique. L'implantation cochléaire a révolutionnée la prise en charge de la surdité profonde et sévère. C'est une technique sûre, efficace lorsqu'elle s'adresse à des populations correctement sélectionnées.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the safety, efficacy, and outcomes of cochlear implantation in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case review. SETTING Tertiary referral center with large cochlear implant program. PATIENTS Nineteen patients with CSOM who underwent cochlear implantation were identified. Case history, timing of surgical procedures, complications, infections, and postimplant audiometric scores (Hearing in Noise Test [HINT], City University of New York Sentences [CUNY], and Central Institute for the Deaf Sentences [CID]) were evaluated. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Rates of postoperative infections and complications as well as postimplant auditory performance. RESULTS Twelve patients underwent a staged procedure involving canal wall down mastoidectomy or radical revision mastoidectomy with middle ear and mastoid obliteration and closure of the external auditory canal followed by cochlear implantation approximately 5 months later. Seven patients were implanted in a single procedure. There were no infections or medical complications after implantation. On average, patients had excellent audiometric scores at 1 year postimplantation (mean sentence test, 79%; SD, 14), and these scores were comparable to our general population (mean sentence test, 71%; SD, 32). CONCLUSION Cochlear implant patients with CSOM have no increased risk of postoperative infections or complications. These patients have excellent outcomes with audiometric scores comparable to the general cochlear implant population. Cochlear implantation is a safe and effective treatment for patients with profound hearing loss secondary to CSOM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the hearing threshold and linguistic results of cochlear implanted children aged 10 months to 5 years, when they reached the age of 12. We studied the benefits of sequential bilateral implantation. METHOD AND RESULTS This is an observational, descriptive, transversal study comprising 57 cochlear implanted subjects. We performed a free field tonal audiometry at 65dB SPL, speech tests and sentences in quiet and noise (SNR+10) tests. The Objective and Criterial Language Battery (BLOC) was used to assess linguistic competence, in its screening version. RESULTS Children implanted under the age of 2 and with inter-implant period less than or equal to 4 years reached better statistically significant results in disyllabic and sentences with and without noise (p=0.006) tests and in the disyllabic test with noise (p=0.045) (the hardest speech test). This suggests the acquisition of binaurality, as opposed to children implanted after this age, with inter-implant period longer than 4 years, who do not reach the same performance levels. RESULTS of language development in the group implanted at ages 10 months to 2 years are better with respect to implanted children at ages 3-5 (<0.05) in both unilateral and bilateral implanted children in relation to the age of implantation. CONCLUSION Children with pre-lingual deafness implanted before the age of 2, when they are 12 years old obtain more benefits in their language development and in their linguistic competence than children implanted after this age. The audiology results are better in children implanted bilaterally under the age of 2.

Abstract
CONCLUSIONS Cochlear implantation appears to favour the perception of improved quality of life (QoL) among children and adolescents. Similar trends were observed among the responses of deaf children and their parents. However, parents of deaf children perceive fewer feelings of provocation than children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess health-related QoL (HRQoL) among prelingual profoundly deaf children and adolescents with cochlear implants and to compare the responses of these children to those of their parents. METHODS Our sample consisted of deaf children and adolescents with cochlear implants and two control groups: hearing children and adolescents and deaf children and adolescents. The ages of the participants ranged between 8 and 18 years. Parents and children/adolescents were surveyed using the Kidscreen-52, which is a generic instrument for assessing the HRQoL of children and adolescents. Structured interviews were conducted with parents to collect information and clinical histories, and the Graffar scale was used to assess socioeconomic status. RESULTS The hearing participants exhibited significantly higher QoL than the deaf participants without implants in nearly all domains. In contrast, although hearing participants exhibited a slightly higher QoL than implanted deaf children, these differences were smaller and failed to reach statistical significance.

Abstract
Cochlear implants have a significant positive effect on spoken language development in severely hearing impaired children. Previous work in this population has focused mostly on the emergence of early-developing language skills, such as vocabulary. The current study aims at comparing narratives, which are more complex and later-developing spoken language skills, of a contemporary group of profoundly deaf school-aged children using cochlear implants (n=66, median age=8 years 3 months) with matched normal hearing peers. Results show that children with cochlear implants demonstrate good results on quantity and coherence of the utterances, but problematic outcomes on quality, content and efficiency of retold stories. However, for a subgroup (n=20, median age=8 years 1 month) of deaf children without additional disabilities who receive cochlear implantation before the age of 2 years, use two implants, and are raised with one spoken language, age-adequate spoken narrative skills at school-age are feasible. This is the first study to set the goals regarding spoken narrative skills for deaf children using cochlear implants.
