Glutathione capped core/shell CdSeS/ZnS quantum dots as a medical imaging tool for cancer cells

Annealing temperature effects on the size and band gap of ZnS quantum dots fabricated by co-precipitation technique without capping agent

ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were fabricated using the co-precipitation technique with no capping agent. The effects of different annealing temperatures (non-annealed, 240 °C and 340 °C for 2 h) on the structural and optical characteristics of ZnS QDs are reported. The samples were examined by XRD, TEM, PL, FTIR, and UV-Vis. An increase in annealing temperature led to an increase in the dot size and a lowering of the energy band gap (E_G). The average crystallite size, D of ZnS was between 4.4 and 5.6 nm. The ZnS QDs showed a band gap of 3.75, 3.74 and 3.72 eV for non-annealed, 240 °C, and 340 °C annealed samples. The reflection spectra increased in the visible light and decreased in UV region with an increase in annealing temperature. This work showed that the band gap and size of ZnS QDs could be tuned by varying the annealing temperature.

Zero-Biased Photoelectrochemical Detection of Cardiac Biomarker Myoglobin Based on CdSeS/ZnS Quantum Dots and Barium Titanate Perovskite

Cardiovascular diseases are considered one of the leading causes of premature mortality of patients worldwide. Therefore, rapid diagnosis of these diseases is crucial to ensure the patient's survival. During a heart attack or severe muscle damage, myoglobin is rapidly released in the body to constitute itself as a precise biomarker of acute myocardial infarction. Thus, we described the photoelectrochemical immunosensor development to detect myoglobin. It was based on fluorine-doped tin oxide modified with CdSeS/ZnSe quantum dots and barium titanate (BTO), designated as CdSeS/ZnSQDS/BTO. It was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and amperometry. The anodic photocurrent at the potential of 0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and pH 7.4 was found linearly related to the myoglobin (Mb) concentration from 0.01 to 1000 ng mL^-1. Furthermore, the immunosensor showed an average recovery rate of 95.7-110.7% for the determination of myoglobin.

A comprehensive exploration of pharmacological properties, bioactivities and inhibitory potentiality of luteolin from Tridax procumbens as anticancer drug by in-silico approach

Tridax procumbens is a flowering plant of the Asteraceae family with a wide range of medicinal uses like anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, immunomodulatory, etc. This study aimed to investigate the anti-cancerous activity of human lung cancer for targeting luteolin, a phytochemical of Tridax procumbens. The computational study has been done for studying the structural properties of luteolin. The drug-likeness of the molecule has been predicted by virtual screening of ADMET properties. The molecular docking technique of the in-silico method is performed to check the complex formation between protein and ligand. The reactivity and stability of the molecule are investigated with the help of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In the present work, we have tried to establish a strong candidature of any of the phytochemical of Tridax Procumbens as an inhibitor against human lung cancer.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy study of intercellular events in filopodia using 3-mercaptopropoinc acid capped CdSe/ZnS quantum dots

Physico-chemical mobility of cells in three dimensions is dependent on the development of filipodia, which is the fundamental instinct for survival and other cellular functions in live cells. Specifically, our present research paper describes the synthesis of 3-Mercaptopropoinc acid (MPA) capped CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), which are biocompatible and utilized for cellular bioimaging applications. Using the pancreatic cell lines BXCP3 cells, we successfully demonstrated the applicability of MPA-capped QDs for intercellular filopodia imaging. Employing these QDs, we examined the dynamics of filopodia formation in real-time along the Z-axis by using confocal laser microscopy.

Cutting-edge Nanotechnological Approaches for Lung Cancer Therapy

Lung cancer is the second leading cancer with a high rate of mortality. It can be treated using different intervention techniques such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgical removal, and photodynamic therapy. All of these interventions lack specificity, implying that it harms the normal cells adjacent to the infected ones. Nanotechnology provides a promising solution that increases the bioavailability of anticancer drugs at the tumor site with reduced toxicity and improved therapeutic efficacy. Nanotechnology also improves the way lung cancer is diagnosed and treated. Various nanocarriers like liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, and different theranostic approaches are already approved for medical use, while various are under clinical and preclinical stages. This review article covers the details about lung cancer, types of overexpressed receptors, and cutting-edge nanocarriers used for treating lung cancer at its specific target.

Highly Efficient and Controllable Methodology of the Cd0.25Zn0.75Se/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dots Synthesis

The surface of any binary or multi-component nanocrystal has imperfections and defects. The number of surface defects depends both on the nature of the nanomaterial and on the method of its preparation. One of the possibilities to confine the number of surface defects is the epitaxial growth of the shell, which leads to a change in the physical properties while maintaining the morphology of the core. To form a shell of the desired thickness, an accurate calculation of the amount of its precursors is substantial to avoid the appearance of individual crystals consisting of the shell material. This study aimed to develop an effective calculation method for the theoretical amount of precursors required for the formation of a ZnS shell on the surface of a Cd_0.25Zn_0.75Se core, followed by the practical implementation of theoretical calculations and characterization of the prepared nanomaterials. This method allows the complete control of the masses and volumes of the initial reagents, which will in turn prevent undesirable nucleation of nuclei consisting of the shell material. In the synthesis of Cd_0.25Zn_0.75Se/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs), the sources of chalcogens were substituted seleno- and thioureas, which are capable of not only supplanting modern toxic sources of sulfur and selenium but also allowing one to perform the controlled synthesis of highly photoluminescent QDs with a low number of surface defects. The result of this shell overcoating method was an impetuous augmentation in the photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY up to 83%), uniformity in size and shape, and a high yield of nanomaterials. The developed synthetic technique of core/shell QDs provides a controlled growth of the shell on the core surface, which makes it possible to transfer this method to an industrial scale.

Imaging cancer cells with nanostructures: Prospects of nanotechnology driven non-invasive cancer diagnosis

The application of nanostructured materials in medicine is a rapidly evolving area of research that includes both the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Metals, metal oxides and carbon-based nanomaterials have shown much promise in medical technological advancements due to their tunable physical, chemical and biological properties. The nanoscale properties, especially the size, shape, surface chemistry and stability makes them highly desirable for diagnosing and treating various diseases, including cancers. Major applications of nanomaterials in cancer diagnosis include in vivo bioimaging and molecular marker detection, mainly as image contrast agents using modalities such as radio, magnetic resonance, and ultrasound imaging. When a suitable targeting ligand is attached on the nanomaterial surface, it can help pinpoint the disease site during imaging. The application of nanostructured materials in cancer diagnosis can help in the early detection, treatment and patient follow-up . This review aims to gather and present the information regarding the application of nanotechnology in cancer diagnosis. We also discuss the challenges and prospects regarding the application of nanomaterials as cancer diagnostic tools.

Silanized Luminescent Quantum Dots for the Simultaneous Multicolor Lateral Flow Immunoassay of Two Mycotoxins

A critical point for the successful development of a fluorescent quantum dot (QD)-based immunoassay is maintaining the high fluorescence quantum yield of QDs during hydrophilization and bioconjugation. In this paper, we carefully designed CdSe/CdS and CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-shell heterostructures and extended them with silica coating of different surface composition allowing preservation of fluorescence quantum yield as high as 70% in aqueous media. The silanized QDs containing epoxy and carboxy surface groups were bioconjugated with monoclonal antibodies. The synthesized fluorescent conjugates were used in a multicolor lateral flow immunoassay for simultaneous determination of two mycotoxins. Zearalenone and deoxynivalenol were chosen as a proof of concept. Cutoff levels for the zearalenone and deoxynivalenol detection were adjusted to be at 40 and 400 μg kg^-1, respectively, complying with the European Commission regulation. Validation of the developed test was performed by analysis of 34 naturally contaminated maize and wheat samples; as a confirmatory method, LC-MS/MS was used.

Facile one-pot aqueous synthesis of highly soluble and luminescent CdSe quantum dots without nitrogen bubbling
