Abstract
Introduction Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy in the United States. The majority of cases are identified in Non-Hispanic Whites (NHW) and are far less demonstrated in patients of colour (POC). However, the Hispanic population represents a large and growing proportion of the US population, and skin cancer diagnoses in Hispanics are rising. Thus, the goal of this study is to examine clinicopathologic differences between BCC in Hispanics versus NHW. Methods A retrospective chart review of Hispanic and NHW patients with BCC at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center from January 2018 to March 2020 was performed. In total, 101 BCC samples from the first 100 patients identified of Hispanic ancestry, as well as 50 BCC samples identified from the first 50 patients identifying as NHW, were included for analysis. Patient characteristics (age, sex, medical history, and ethnicity), as well as tumour characteristics (location, subtype, tumour depth, and perineural invasion), were collected. We used between subjects t-tests for continuous variables, and chi-square tests for categorical variables. Results In total, 151 specimens were collected amongst 122 subjects (79 Hispanics and 43 NHW patients). Among NHW, the majority of patients (74.4%) were men, but among the Hispanic population, the majority (68.4%) were female (p < 0.001). Prior history of other skin cancer was more common among NHW (67.4%) than Hispanics (31.6%) (p=<0.001). The Hispanic population had a significantly higher proportion of head and neck tumours (p = 0.0004) but a lower proportion of extremity tumours (p = 0.001) compared to NHW. Pigmented BCC was significantly more common among Hispanic patients (p < 0.01). Finally, within the Hispanic group, there was a significant association between sex and histology (p = 0.004), with Hispanic men demonstrating more aggressive mix histology compared to Hispanic women. Discussion Our study supports the notion that BCC disparities occur among POC compared to NHW. This includes variations in epidemiologic factors such as sex and past medical history, primary tumour location, and pathologic characteristics. Further research should be conducted to identify additional differences in skin cancer presentation in POC to reduce the gaps in skin cancer knowledge and care.

Abstract
Skin cancer ranks as the most prevalent cancer in the United States. Over the past two decades, the incidence of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, among Hispanics has risen by 20%. Melanoma mortality rates are higher in Hispanics than in non-Hispanic Whites (NHW). Early detection of melanoma via skin self-examination may lead to diagnosis of melanoma at an earlier stage, when they are thinner, less invasive, and more easily treatable, resulting in improved survival rates. Given the gap in research addressing culturally relevant factors related to skin cancer prevention and detection among Hispanics and informed by the Preventive Health Model, this study tested the associations between social and normative factors and self-efficacy with thorough skin self-examination (TSSE) intentions and queried participants about their preferences for skin cancer-related interventions. Among respondents (n = 79), 55.7% were female (n = 44), and 89.9% held a college or higher degree (n = 71). Self-efficacy fully mediated the effects of descriptive norms, injunctive norms, and provider-patient communication on TSSE intentions among Hispanics. On average, respondents demonstrated considerable interest in participating in a skin cancer-related behavioral intervention using a mobile application (75.6%) and/or using WhatsApp (71.8%). These preliminary findings provide new insights for development of future digital skin cancer intervention programs among Hispanics targeting social factors, including social norms and provider-patient communication, and utilizing preferred digital tools.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin cancer incidence and prognosis vary by ethnicity and gender, and previous studies demonstrate ethnic and gender differences in sun-related cognitions and behaviors that contribute to this disease. The current study sought to inform skin cancer interventions tailored to specific demographic groups of college students. The study applied the prototype willingness model (PWM) to examine how unique combinations of ethnic and gender identities influence sun-related cognitions. METHOD Using data from a survey of 262 college students, the study tested whether self-reported sun-related cognitions were different for White women, Hispanic women, White men, and Hispanic men. Path modeling was also used to identify which PWM cognitions (e.g., prototypes, norms) were the strongest predictors of risk and protection intentions and willingness in each demographic group. RESULTS Several differences in sun-related cognitions and PWM pathways emerged across groups, emphasizing the need for tailored skin cancer education and interventions. Results suggest that, for White women, interventions should primarily focus on creating less favorable attitudes toward being tan. CONCLUSION Interventions for Hispanic women may instead benefit from manipulating perceived similarity to sun-related prototypes, encouraging closer personal identification with images of women who protect their skin and encouraging less identification with images of women who tan. For White men, skin cancer interventions may focus on creating more favorable images of men who protect their skin from the sun. Lastly, interventions for Hispanic men should increase perceived vulnerability for skin cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Examine retention and evaluation of incorporating melanocortin-1 receptor genetic risk information materials in a skin cancer prevention intervention conducted in Hispanics living near Tampa, Florida and Ponce, Puerto Rico. METHODS Two researchers applied thematic content analysis to identify major themes of open-ended responses (n = 1689) from 489 participants. RESULTS Five major thematic categories emerged: 1) intervention comments; 2) tips and tricks; 3) cancer prevention; 4) general information; and 5) risk factors and genetics. Responses captured under intervention comments (e.g., information was clear, easy to understand) and tips and tricks for sun protection (e.g., using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing) were most frequent. Participants noted the importance of conducting skin exams professionally or at home. English-preferring Tampa residents stated their individual risk factors, especially race and/or ethnicity, more frequently than Ponce residents and Spanish-preferring Tampa residents. Ponce residents were more likely to comment on wanting to share intervention materials with family and friends. CONCLUSION Findings suggest Hispanic participants implemented sun safety activities.

Abstract
Our goal is to determine whether our objective 9-point Self-Assessment Skin Tone Palette (SASTP) is correlated with a colorimeter’s assessment of a melanin index, so that Hispanic and Black people can be included in skin cancer research where scales were developed for White populations. Subjects were asked to self-identify their skin tones using the SASTP. This study assessed the criterion validity of the SASTP by measuring a range of skin colors compared to a melanin index reported from a colorimeter for the upper-inner arm (non-sun-exposed skin color), and the outer forearm (sun-exposed). Among 188 non-artificial tanners, 50% were White, 30% were Hispanic or White-Hispanic, and 20% were other racial categories. Meanwhile, 70% were female (30% male) and 81% were age 18–29 (19% age 30+). The mean melanin of the upper-inner arm decreased with lighter skin color and stronger tendency to burn. The SASTP in comparison to melanin index values was correlated for both the upper-inner arm (r = 0.81, p < 0.001) and the outer forearm (r = 0.77, p < 0.001). The SASTP provides a 9-point scale that can be considered as an alternative, less expensive method that is comparable to the objective colorimeter melanin index, which may be useful in studies on skin cancer among White, non-White, and Hispanic peoples.

Abstract
Knowledge regarding skin tone preferences and their influence on skincare behaviors among people of color is limited. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a difference between ideal and actual skin tone among people of color and whether this difference is associated with tanning and sunscreen use. This was a one-time, voluntary, anonymous, electronic survey designed in REDCap and delivered through ResearchMatch, a national electronic, recruitment tool. Eligible participants were at least 18 years old and self-identified as Black, Asian, Latinx, American Indian/Alaskan Native or Mixed Race. In total, 548 completed survey results were analyzed using SAS. Only the Latinx population was found to have a significant preference for tanner skin (p < 0.05). The Latinx population had significantly more subjects that participated in outdoor tanning than both the Black (p < 0.0001) and Asian population (p < 0.05). Latinx participants who indicated a preference for tanner skin were 2.8 times more likely to never use sunscreen than those without this preference (OR = 2.821, CI = 1.029-7.732, p < 0.05). Our findings have implications for how dermatologists screen, treat, and educate Latinx and skin of color populations.

Abstract
Minorities, particularly non-White minorities, often encounter implicit biases from healthcare professionals that may impact their standard of care and quality of life. The study of dermatology has long been based on Whites, unintentionally affecting the treatment of non-White patients. Melanoma, although mostly curable, can become fatal in those presenting with advanced stages at diagnosis. Despite being rare in racial minorities, melanoma is associated with a worse prognosis among them compared to White populations. In light of this, the objective of this study was to determine the role of education in preventing biases and improving the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma in minority groups to improve patient outcomes. This study was designed as a scoping review to gather evidence on the impact of implicit bias and lack of education on the treatment of melanoma in people of color. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we searched for peer-reviewed studies involving melanoma, education, and treatment bias in people of color on the databases PubMed, Medline EBSCO, CINAHL, and Cochrane. The data were extracted pertaining to the following main aspects: (1) risk factors, (2) surveys of current knowledge, and 3) educational interventions. This scoping review identified socioeconomic factors, bias, and lack of education in minority populations as causes of increased mortality rates in melanoma. Moreover, because preventative dermatology is largely based on White skin types, incorporating darker skin tones into education will help dispel implicit bias. Additionally, there is evidence to indicate that current patient knowledge and understanding of skin cancer is inaccurate among many and can be significantly improved through educational interventions, such as brochures and videos. Further educational interventions may be beneficial to increase understanding of melanoma in populations of color to address health disparities in dermatological care.

Abstract
Objective Racial and ethnic health disparities affect the diagnosis and management of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers, leading to deleterious outcomes. Non-Hispanic White patients make up the majority of skin cancers cases, yet racial and ethnic minorities have poorer prognoses and outcomes. The skin cancer literature is fragmented with regards to potential contributors to these healthcare disparities. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of the skin cancer literature to briefly quantify racial and ethnic inequities, highlight contributing factors, and propose practical changes that can be made. Methods A PubMed search was completed to identify articles related to racial and ethnic health care disparities in the context of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Results Relative to non-Hispanic White patients, patients of racial and ethnic minorities have differing clinical presentations of skin cancers and genetic risk factors. Insurance, access to specialty care, cultural beliefs, and available educational resources further contribute to racial and ethnic disparities. Limitations We are limited to the level of detail provided in the existing literature, and at some times are unable to distinguish race of Hispanic populations. We also acknowledge that there are different nationalities grouped under these broad labels as well as multi-racial populations that may not be accounted for. Conclusion Awareness of and familiarization with innate factors and potentially more modifiable contributors can help inform efforts to close the observed gap in racial and ethnic inequities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Pediatric melanoma is rare and remains poorly characterized, especially in racial/ethnic minorities of whom Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing in the United States. The health care burden of melanoma in Hispanics, who often present with more advanced disease, is rising and has even been called an early epidemic in California. We sought to document key clinicopathologic features of melanoma in Hispanic pediatric patients and to compare these parameters to pediatric non-Hispanic whites (NHWs) under the a priori hypothesis that Spitzoid melanomas occur in greater proportions in Hispanics. METHODS Single-institution cross-sectional study of pediatric melanoma cases (age < 20 years) with Hispanic stratification and comparison with matched Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data from the same time frame (1988-2016). RESULTS Of our 61 institutional cases of pediatric melanoma, Hispanics (11), compared with NHWs (40), presented significantly younger (11.7 years, 95% CI: 2.77-8.00 years; P = .001), with lower limb predominance (46%; P < .05), mostly Spitzoid melanomas (82%; P < .05), and thicker tumors (2.34 mm, CI: 0.26-2.19 mm; P < .05). Similarly, SEER data (2499 cases) showed greater proportions of childhood/pre-pubertal adolescent melanomas (<15 years), lower limb involvement, Spitzoid subtype (36.5% vs 22.5% in NHWs; P = .001), and advanced (regional/distant) disease stages in Hispanics (212) compared with NHWs (2197). CONCLUSIONS Pediatric melanomas may present differently in Hispanics, and heightened awareness/lower threshold to biopsy high-risk Spitzoid tumors on the lower limb may be warranted. Further investigations are needed to aid prevention and early detection in a vulnerable minority population less likely to seek outpatient dermatology specialty care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of skin cancer has been increasing in Puerto Rico in recent years. Sun protection behaviors are suboptimal among Puerto Ricans. However, there are limited data regarding major factors associated with Puerto Rican adults' sun protection behaviors. To examine factors associated with Puerto Rican adults' sun protection behaviors, a survey study was conducted in Puerto Rico. METHOD A population-based sample of 667 Puerto Rican adults completed a telephone survey in 2016. Survey items addressed potential correlates of sun protection behaviors. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses examining correlates of the sun protection behaviors index were conducted. RESULTS Higher levels of sun protection behaviors were found among English language acculturated compared to Spanish language acculturated individuals (p < .05) and among individuals with private versus no health insurance (p < .05). Higher levels of sun protection behaviors were found among individuals with greater skin cancer knowledge (p < .001), fewer sun protection barriers (p < .01), and greater sun protection self-efficacy (p < .001). CONCLUSION By identifying correlates of Puerto Rican adults' sun protection behaviors, this timely study provides insight on factors to target in future skin cancer interventions in this understudied population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although there is an emergent increase in the epidemiology of skin cancer in Saudi Arabia, yet knowledge, attitude, and awareness towards skin cancer prevention measures is still poor. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes and practice towards skin cancer among the Saudi population, as well as, to evaluate the level of awareness relating to exposure to sunlight. METHODS This cross-sectional survey involved 438 participants who were randomly selected from Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia. A standard questionnaire was used to collect data regarding skin cancer. The questionnaire focused on three main aspects knowledge, attitude, and practice. The skin cancer quality of life impact tool (SCQOLIT) was employed. RESULTS The present study included 438 participants, aged 18 to 55 years old. The response in the present study was 81.9%. Regarding the causes and effects of skin cancer, 61.2% of the respondents have prior knowledge about it. The positive attitude about skin cancer was exhibited by 68.9%, and only 31.1% showed a negative attitude towards it. CONCLUSION In conclusion, Knowledge, attitude, and practice towards skin cancer still under the desired level to prevent skin cancer and its related conditions in Saudi Arabia. Greater emphasis should be made through awareness campaigns and available media to raise the knowledge about implications related to prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Abstract
Background Hispanics diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma are more likely to present at advanced stages but the reasons for this are unknown. We identify census tracts at high risk for late stage melanoma diagnosis (LSMD) and examine the contextual predictors of LSMD in California, Texas, and Florida. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using geocoded state cancer registry data. Using hierarchical multilevel logistic regression models we estimated ORs and 95% confidence intervals for the impact of socioeconomic, Hispanic ethnic concentration, index of dissimilarity, and health resource availability measures on LSMD. Results We identified 12,493 cases. In California, late stage cases were significantly more likely to reside within census tracts composed mostly of Hispanics and immigrants. In Texas, LSMD was associated with residence in areas of socioeconomic deprivation and a higher proportion of immigrants. In Florida, living in areas of low education attainment, high levels of poverty, and a high percentage of Hispanic residents was significantly associated with LSMD. Residential segregation did not independently affect LSMD. Conclusion The influence of contextual predictors on LSMD varied in magnitude and strength by state, highlighting both the cosegregation of social adversity and poverty and the complexity of their interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are the most common malignancy in the United States. Although historically most cases occurred in whites, in recent years, NMSC incidence in Hispanics and Asians has increased. As Hispanics and Asians are the 2 fastest growing groups in the United States, the NMSC rise in these populations is concerning. Currently, data on clinical characteristics of NMSCs in these minorities are limited, and a thorough analysis of risk differences among Hispanic, Asian, and white patients is lacking. OBJECTIVE To assess differences in NMSC prevalence, risk factors, and clinical presentation among Hispanic, Asian, and white populations at University of California San Diego Dermatologic and Mohs Micrographic Surgery Center. METHODS Five-year retrospective chart review. RESULTS Of 4,029 NMSC cases, 3,881 (96.3%) were in whites, 115 (2.9%) were in Hispanics, and 33 (0.8%) were in Asians. Most cases in whites occurred in men, whereas this gender ratio was reversed for Hispanics and Asians. Hispanics had significantly more cases occurring in the "central face." CONCLUSION The rise of NMSCs in Hispanic and Asians, especially among women, is concerning given that they are the fastest growing ethnic populations in the United States. It is important that proper counseling for photoprotection be stressed to these populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hispanic individuals who suffer from melanoma are diagnosed later and have a worse prognosis. Because the Hispanic population is one of the fastest growing in the United States, it is important to spread awareness of melanoma. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to evaluate whether an online educational video about skin cancer could improve knowledge about melanoma and encourage self-skin examinations (SSE). METHODS The authors directed Hispanic patients to an online survey, which assessed for knowledge about melanoma risk factors and prevention. This was followed by a 5-minute online video about melanoma. A second survey was sent immediately after the video, and a third survey was sent 1 month later. All project materials were in Spanish and available online. RESULTS Eighty-six participants completed the full experiment. After watching the online video, a significantly higher proportion of participants provided correct answers for melanoma risk factors and prevention techniques. A similar increase was seen in the number of individuals who reported performing SSEs. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence that an online educational video targeted at the Hispanic population has potential to improve melanoma awareness. This type of intervention may lead to earlier diagnosis and better prognosis for Hispanic individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of skin cancers is constantly increasing in Morocco, and they have gradually become more aggressive due to a significant delay in the diagnosis. Our aim was to assess the levels of awareness and the influencing factors related to skin cancer knowledge in Morocco. METHODS This cross-sectional study was carried out in Morocco through the medium of a validated questionnaire, which contained several items - demographics, skin cancer knowledge and attitudes towards skin cancer patients- during a period of 1 year (2014). RESULTS Out of the 700 participants enrolled in the study, 17.9% had never heard of skin cancer, 32.5% had a low score of skin cancer knowledge, 66.7% had a moderate score, and only 0.85% had a high score of skin cancer knowledge. Further, 15.1% of the participants were under the assumption that this cancer is contagious. The sun was the most incriminated risk factor in skin cancer occurrence by 74.3% of the participants, and 57.9% of them believed that prevention is important through using various means of photoprotection. After univariate and multivariate analysis, the influencing factors related to the skin cancer knowledge in Morocco were: the socioeconomic status (P = 0.003, OR = 7. 3) and the educational level (p < 0.001, OR = 20. 9). CONCLUSIONS Due to the lack of knowledge or the underestimation of skin cancer in our study population, efforts are needed to promote skin cancer surveillance behaviors in Morocco.

Abstract
Objective: Mohs micrographic surgery is widely utilized for the treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers with the advantage of tissue sparing and higher cure rate. The preoperative tumor size and post-Mohs micrographic surgery defect size are useful surrogate measures of nonmelanoma skin cancer morbidity. The authors sought to evaluate whether gender, Hispanic ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sun-safe practices and self-skin exams affected tumor size and Mohs micrographic surgery defect size. They also investigated factors associated with self-skin exams. Design: A cross-sectional survey-based study. Setting: Two dermatologic surgery clinics-one academic-associated and the other private. Participants: Patients receiving Mohs surgery for nonmelanoma skin cancers. Measurements: Tumor size and Mohs defect size and their relationship to patient factors ascertained from a survey, as well as the number of patients performing self-skin exams. The authors used t-tests and analysis of variance to compare tumor and defect sizes for each patient factor. Chi-squared tests were used to determine the factors associated with self-skin exams performance. Results: Lower education was associated with greater head and face tumor area (95mm2 vs. 41mm2, P=0.019), but not Mohs micrographic surgery defect size. Other studied patient factors were not associated with an increased morbidity. Hispanics performed self-skin exams at a lower rate than non-Hispanics (27% vs. 46%, p=0.03). Conclusion: This study innovatively uses tumor and Mohs micrographic surgery defect area as a measure of morbidity, allowing for identification of populations at need for improved education and prevention. Abstract
Cutaneous melanoma is a significant public health concern, accounting for thousands of deaths annually in the US. Early detection and diagnosis are critical given the poor prognosis and limited treatment options of advanced-stage disease. While non-Hispanic whites have higher incidence rates of melanoma, Hispanics are typically diagnosed at later disease stages and suffer higher morbidity and mortality. Currently, there is a paucity of literature investigating the root causes underlying these trends among Hispanics. Given that Hispanics are the most rapidly expanding demographic segment in the US, it is essential for cancer control efforts to elucidate the major determinants of their poor melanoma outcomes. Herein, we use the social ecological model as a framework to explore the multitude of influences on melanoma disparities among Hispanics and provide recommendations for planning future studies and interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify health disparities in pediatric patients with melanoma that affect disease presentation and outcome. STUDY DESIGN This was a retrospective cohort study of all persons aged ≤18 years diagnosed with melanoma and enrolled in the Texas Cancer Registry between 1995 and 2009. Socioeconomic status (SES) and driving distance to the nearest pediatric cancer treatment center were calculated for each patient. Logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with advanced-stage disease. Life table methods and Cox regression were used to estimate survival probability and hazard ratios. RESULTS A total of 185 adolescents (age >10 years) and 50 young children (age ≤10 years) were identified. Hispanics (n = 27; 12%) were 3 times more likely than non-Hispanic whites (n = 177; 75%) to present with advanced disease (OR, 3.8; 95% CI, 1.7-8.8). Young children were twice as likely as adolescents to present with advanced disease (OR, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.1-4.3). Distance to treatment center and SES did not affect stage of disease at presentation. Hispanics and those in the lowest SES quartile had a significantly higher mortality risk (hazard ratios, 3.0 [95% CI, 1.2-7.8] and 4.3 [95% CI, 1.4-13.9], respectively). In the adjusted survival model, only advanced disease was predictive of mortality (P < .001). CONCLUSION Hispanics and young children with melanoma are more likely to present with advanced disease, and advanced disease is the single most important predictor of survival. Heightened awareness among physicians is needed to facilitate early detection of melanoma within these groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anorectal melanoma is a rare type of malignant melanoma and thus the epidemiology of patients with this tumor has been poorly defined. OBJECTIVE To describe the epidemiology of anorectal melanoma in the United States. METHODS AND MATERIALS We obtained case and population data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 13 Registries Database (SEER 13) between 1992 and 2011 using rectal diagnostic codes C20.9 to 21.8 and ICD-O-3 melanoma codes 8720 to 8721 and 8742 to 8746. RESULTS There were 260 primary anorectal melanomas in SEER 13 from 1992 to 2011, occurring mostly in the rectum. The incidence of anorectal melanoma was higher among women than men with the highest rates occurring among white Hispanics ages 65 to 74 years. During this time period, the age-adjusted incidence rates rose significantly (p < .05) for both women and men with estimated annual percentage changes of 3.02% and 5.08%, respectively. Overall and melanoma-specific survival was poor irrespective of gender or ethnicity. CONCLUSION Anorectal melanoma in the United States is increasing in both men and women, with the highest rates in elderly Hispanic white women. Hispanic whites were more likely to develop anorectal melanoma than non-Hispanic whites, suggesting that this population may be targeted for screening interventions. These results warrant further investigation to better understand the gender, racial, ethnic, and geographic variations for anorectal melanomas.

Abstract
United States Hispanics have seven times lower melanoma incidence rates than non-Hispanic whites (NHW). It is unclear whether this difference can be explained solely by phenotypic risk factors, like darker skin, or whether modifiable risk factors, like sun exposure, also play a role. The purpose of this paper is to summarize what is currently known about melanoma risk factors among Hispanics and NHWs, and whether or not those differences could explain the difference in melanoma incidence. Through literature review, relative risks and prevalence of melanoma risk factors in Hispanics and NHWs were identified and used to calculate the expected rate in Hispanics and rate ratio compared to NHWs. We found that melanoma risk factors either have similar frequency in Hispanics and NHWs (e.g., many large nevi) or are less frequent in Hispanics but do not explain a high proportion of disease variation (e.g., red hair). Considering current knowledge of risk factor prevalence, we found that melanoma incidence rates in the two groups should actually be similar. Sun exposure behavior among Hispanics may contribute to the explanation for the 7-fold difference in melanoma rates. Currently, limited data exist on sun exposure behavior among Hispanics, but possibilities for improving primary prevention by further studying these practices are substantial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Latinos, whose views are infrequently examined in genomic research, may be at risk of missing out on the benefits of genomic medicine. AIMS To explore this possibility, we conducted a qualitative study of awareness and attitudes about genetic testing among Latinos with lower acculturation in New York City. METHODS We conducted four focus groups (7 English-speaking men, 5 Spanish-speaking men, 13 English-speaking women and 13 Spanish-speaking women) to explore factors that influence the adoption of new innovations through the discussion of genetic testing in general, and a hypothetical vignette describing a genetic test for skin cancer risk, in particular. RESULTS Through inductive thematic text analysis of focus group transcripts, our multidisciplinary team identified themes within knowledge and attitudes, communication and sources of information, anticipated responses, factors that may increase adoption, and barriers to adoption of genetic testing. Specifically, a majority of participants expressed some degree of uncertainty regarding the purpose of genetic tests and information these tests provide, rarely discussed genetic testing with others in their social networks, and expressed concerns about the misuse of and possible adverse emotional responses to genetic information. However, participants also expressed high levels of interest in receiving a skin cancer genetic test in response to the vignette and believed that receiving actionable health information was a primary reason to consider testing. Gender-based differences in perceived barriers to testing emerged. CONCLUSIONS The results highlight beliefs and barriers that future interventions could target to help ensure that Latinos have adequate understanding of and access to genomic medicine advances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This article sought to elucidate how aspects of poverty and culture may contribute to race- and ethnicity-based disparities in cutaneous melanoma outcomes. METHODS We identified published studies addressing the social determinants of melanoma. Selected review articles included US-based studies comprised of patients representing adults, children, and adolescents. RESULTS African Americans and Hispanics diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma are more likely to present with more advanced stages of disease at diagnosis and have higher rates of mortality than their nonminority counterparts. These disparities may be a consequence of economic, social, and cultural barriers such as low income, public forms of health insurance, lower levels of education, lower levels of melanoma awareness and knowledge, and lower rates of participation in melanoma screening. No studies in the literature examined the potential impact of social injustice, English proficiency, immigrant status, and health literacy. CONCLUSIONS Substantial gaps exist in our knowledge of the pathways linking social determinants and race- and ethnicity-based disparities in melanoma. More studies are warranted to inform the development of effective interventions aimed at narrowing inequities and improving cutaneous melanoma outcomes among minority populations.

Abstract
Melanoma incidence is increasing among Hispanics/Latinos in California. This community-based project reached out to a rural Hispanic/Latino community in North San Diego County to provide melanoma prevention and screening education. At a local community health fair, bilingual volunteer lay health workers led 10- to 15-minute-long information sessions on melanoma disease, risk factors, and skin self-examination techniques. Pearson chi-square analyses of participants' (N = 34) responses to pre- and postintervention evaluation surveys indicate significant increases in knowledge, risk awareness, and self-efficacy for self-screening. The results revealed that Hispanics/Latinos in a low socioeconomic stratum might be at moderate to high risk for developing melanoma. Their low annual income, low level of education, occupational sun-exposure, and lack of access to health care are likely factors that deter at-risk Hispanics/Latinos from seeking health care.

Abstract
Purpose. We reviewed the literature on sun protection beliefs in Hispanics living in the United States to explore what challenges are faced by area of research. Method. A review of PubMED, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases was performed. Studies were published in peer-reviewed journals (in all years available) and written in English. The search terms used were [“skin cancer” OR “sun protection”] AND [“Latino” OR “Hispanic”] AND “beliefs.” Eligible papers were included in the final analysis after meeting the following inclusion criteria: (1) the records had to quantitatively examine and report sun protection beliefs in Hispanics, (2) the number of Hispanic participants in the sample had to be clearly specified, and (3) studies reporting differences in sun protection beliefs between Hispanics and other racial and ethnic groups were included in the review. Results. Of the 92 articles identified, 11 met inclusion criteria and addressed sun protection beliefs regarding skin cancer seriousness and susceptibility, and benefits and barriers of sun protection and skin cancer risk behaviors. Characteristics of studies and results were examined. Conclusion. There is insufficient evidence to determine a pattern of sun protection beliefs among Hispanics in the United States. More quality studies are needed which focus on sun protection beliefs in Hispanics.

Abstract
Background Asian-Americans represent the fastest growing minority group in the United States, but are under-represented patients in outpatient dermatology clinics. At the same time, skin cancer rates in individuals of Asian descent are increasing, but skin cancer detection appears to be delayed in Asian-Americans compared to white individuals. Some health-care provider related factors for this phenomenon have been reported in the literature, but the patient-related factors are unclear. Methods This exploratory study to identify patient-related factors associated with dermatology visits in Asian-Americans was performed after Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. An anonymous, online survey utilizing validated items was conducted on adults who self-identified as Asian-American in Northern California. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression for dermatology visits as indicated by responses to the question of “ever having had skin checked by a dermatologist” were performed on survey responses pertaining to demographic information, socioeconomic factors, acculturation, knowledge of melanoma warning signs and SSE belief and practice. Results 89.7% of individuals who opened the online survey completed the items, with 469 surveys included in the analysis. Only 60% reported ever performing a SSE, and only 48% reported ever having a skin examination by a dermatologist. Multivariate models showed that “ever performing SSE” (p < 0.0001), marital status (p = 0.02), family history of skin cancer (p = 0.03) and generation in the United States (p = 0.02) were significant predictors of the primary outcome of “ever had skin checked by a dermatologist”. Conclusions Identification of patient-related factors that associate with dermatology clinic visits in Asian-Americans is important so that this potential gap in dermatologic care can be better addressed through future studies.

Abstract
The incidence of skin cancer among U.S. Hispanics increased 1.3% annually from 1992 to 2008. However, little research has focused on skin cancer prevention among the rapidly growing Hispanic population. In this study, we examined theory-driven, psychosocial correlates of sun protection behaviors in a population-based sample of 787 Hispanic adults (49.6% female, mean age = 41.0 years) residing in five southern or western U.S. states. Participants completed an English- or Spanish-language online survey in September 2011. The outcomes of focus were sunscreen use, shade seeking, and use of sun protective clothing. The correlates included suntan benefits, sun protection benefits and barriers, skin color preference, perceived natural skin protection, photo-aging concerns, perceived skin cancer risk, skin cancer worry, skin cancer fatalism, and sun protection descriptive norms. Results of multiple linear regression analyses revealed the following: sun protection barriers were negatively associated with each outcome; descriptive norms were positively associated with each outcome; perceived natural skin protection was inversely associated with sunscreen use; skin cancer worry was positively associated with shade seeking and use of sun protective clothing; skin cancer fatalism was negatively associated with shade seeking; and skin color preference was negatively associated with use of sun protective clothing. A number of additional statistically significant associations were identified in bivariate correlation analyses. This study informs the potential content of interventions to promote engagement in sun protection behaviors among U.S. Hispanics.

Abstract
Minority populations have disproportionately more advanced stage melanoma and worse survival. To clarify the impact of race and ethnicity on late-stage melanoma diagnosis, we performed spatial analysis of geocoded melanoma cases diagnosed in Florida, 1999-2008, to identify geographic clusters of higher-than-expected incidence of late-stage melanoma and developed predictive models for melanoma cases in high-risk neighborhoods accounting for area-based poverty, race/ethnicity, patient insurance status, age, and gender. In the adjusted model, Hispanic ethnicity and census tract-level poverty are the strongest predictors for clustering of late-stage melanoma. Hispanic whites were 43% more likely to live in neighborhoods with excessive late-stage melanoma (P<0.001) compared with non-Hispanic whites (NHW). For every 1% increase in population living in poverty, there is a 2% increase in late-stage melanoma clustering (P<0.001). Census tract-level poverty predicted late-stage melanoma similarly among NHW and Hispanic whites. The impact of insurance coverage varied among populations; the most consistent trend was that Medicaid coverage is associated with higher odds for late-stage melanoma. The finding that Hispanics are most likely to reside in high-risk neighborhoods, independent of poverty and insurance status, underscores the importance of addressing, and overcoming community-level barriers to melanoma care.
