Abstract
Importance Elevated maternal psychological distress during pregnancy is associated with altered fetal brain development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, prenatal maternal psychological distress more than doubled. Objective To examine the association of the pandemic and rising maternal psychological distress with brain growth in newborns using quantitative 3-dimensional volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Design, Setting, and Participants This prospective cross-sectional study recruited mother-infant dyads at Children's National Hospital, Washington, DC, during the COVID-19 pandemic (June 1, 2020, to June 30, 2022) into a longitudinal infant brain development study and compared them with an existing normative healthy cohort (recruited March 1, 2014, to December 31, 2019). Exclusion criteria included multiple gestation pregnancy, known or suspected congenital infection, documented chromosomal abnormalities, or any maternal contraindication to MRI, as well as prenatal COVID-19 exposure. Infants with structural brain abnormalities or a postnatal confirmation of a genetic syndrome were excluded. Exposure Psychological distress during COVID-19 pandemic. Main Outcomes and Measures Prenatal maternal mental health was evaluated using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Perceived Stress Scale. Neonates underwent nonsedated brain MRI. An ordinary least squares linear regression model was used to measure the differences in regional brain volumes of neonates born before vs during the pandemic with and without exposure to elevated prenatal maternal psychological distress after adjustment for neonatal sex and gestational age at MRI and maternal age and educational level. Results A total of 159 mother-infant dyads were included in the analysis: 103 before and 56 during the pandemic (median gestational age of infants, 39.6 [IQR, 38.4-40.4] weeks; median maternal age, 34.5 [IQR, 31.0-37.0] years). Eighty-three infants (52.2%) were female. Among the mothers, 130 (81.8%) had a college degree and 87 (54.7%) had a graduate degree. Forty-four mothers (27.7%) identified as Asian, Hispanic, or multiracial; 27 (17.0%), as Black; and 88 (55.3%), as White. Scores on anxiety and stress measures were significantly increased in the pandemic cohort. Infants of mothers with elevated maternal distress showed median reductions in white matter (-0.36 [95% CI, -0.61 to -0.11] cm3; Q < .001), right hippocampal (-0.35 [95% CI, -0.65 to -0.06] cm3; Q = .04), and left amygdala (-0.49 [95% CI, -0.84 to -0.13] cm3; Q = .03) volumes compared with infants of mothers with low distress levels. After adjusting for the cohort effect of the pandemic, elevated trait anxiety remained significantly associated with decreased left amygdalar volumes (-0.71 [95% CI, -1.12 to -0.29]; Q < .001). Conclusions and Relevance In this cross-sectional study of maternal-infant dyads prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic, regional neonatal brain volumes were associated with elevated maternal psychological distress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by impaired social functioning that negatively impacts individuals' quality of life. Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed morphological and functional changes in various brain regions associated with SAD. Recent advances in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have enabled the investigation of microstructural white matter (WM) alterations in SAD. This study aims to provide an overview of DTI/DWI studies exploring WM microstructure changes in SAD. METHODS A systematic search on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO was conducted for relevant records on July 8, 2023. An exploratory meta-analysis was also performed. RESULTS Eight studies were reviewed. Consistent findings indicated reduced fractional anisotropy and increased diffusivity measures in different WM tracts in SAD patients compared to healthy controls. These alterations were mostly observed within regions of the fronto-limbic network, like uncinate fasciculus (UF) and superior and inferior longitudinal fasciculi (SLF and ILF). Finally, our exploratory meta-analysis on four studies utilizing a voxel-wise analytic approach yielded no significant differences between SAD patients and controls. LIMITATIONS Limited number of studies, small sample sizes, and heterogeneity in analysis methods. CONCLUSIONS Patients with SAD exhibited altered WM integrity, particularly in the UF, SLF, and ILF, compared to healthy controls. However, due to the limited number of included studies, our meta-analysis yielded no significant differences between SAD patients and controls. Therefore, future research is crucial to unravel the link between altered WM structure and the involvement of other limbic and cortical structures in SAD pathogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Traumatic stress has been associated with increased risk for brain alterations and development of anxiety disorders. Studies conducted in posttraumatic patients have shown white-mater volume and diffusion alterations in the corpus-callosum. Decreased cognitive performance has been demonstrated in acute stress disorder and posttraumatic patients. However, whether cognitive alterations result from stress related neuropathology or reflect a predisposition is not known. In the current study, we examined in healthy controls, whether individual differences in anxiety are associated with those cognitive and brain alterations reported in stress related pathologies. METHODS Twenty healthy volunteers were evaluated for anxiety using the state-trait inventory (STAI), and were tested for memory performance. Brain imaging was employed to extract volumetric and diffusion characteristics of the corpus-callosum. RESULTS Significant correlations were found between trait anxiety and all three diffusion parameters (fractional-anisotropy, mean and radial-diffusivity). Associative-memory performance and corpus-callosum volume were also significantly correlated. CONCLUSION We suggest that cognitive and brain alterations, as tested in the current work and reported in stress related pathologies, are present early and possibly persist throughout life. Our findings support the hypothesis that individual differences in trait anxiety predispose individuals towards negative cognitive outcomes and brain alterations, and potentially to stress related disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxious depression is one of the subtypes of major depressive disorder (MDD), usually defined as "patients with MDD and high levels of anxiety symptoms". Compared to non-anxious MDD (naMDD), patients with anxious MDD (aMDD) have more severe depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation, worse treatment outcomes and remission rates, and poorer prognosis. Current research suggests that the Papez circuit is an important brain structure closely related to emotion, memory, and cognition. This study applied DTI to explore the altered white matter integrity in Papez circuit of patients with aMDD. METHODS DTI data were acquired from 30 medication-naive outpatients with naMDD and 55 with aMDD and 88 demographically similar healthy control (HC) subjects. Voxel-based analysis (VBM) and region of interest (ROI) analysis were conducted to explore the significant difference of fractional anisotropy (FA) values among 3 groups. Pearson's correlations were performed to analyze the correlation between FA values and the score of HAMA-14 and HAMD-17. RESULTS We found that aMDD patients had significantly higher FA values in left fornix (belong to Papez circuit) and left posterior thalamic radiation and right anterior corona radiata (belong to limbic-thalamo-cortical circuitry) compared with HC. And there was variability in the white matter integrity in right posterior thalamic radiation (belong to limbic-thalamo-cortical circuitry) and left fornix (belong to Papez circuit) between aMDD and naMDD patients. LIMITATIONS The cross-sectional study and the population vary between aMDD group and naMDD group are limitations. CONCLUSIONS Abnormal white matter integrity in Papez circuit and Limbic-Thalamo-Cortical circuitry may play an important role in the neuropathology of aMDD and might help to identify aMDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The early identification of patients with panic disorder (PD) with a poor prognosis is important for improving treatment outcomes; however, it is challenging due to a lack of objective biomarkers. We investigated the reliability of characterizing structural white matter (WM) connectivity and its ability to predict PD prognosis after pharmacotherapy. METHODS A total of 138 patients (59 men) with PD and 153 healthy controls (HCs; 73 men) participated in this study. PD symptom severity was measured using the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) at baseline and follow-up periods of 8 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) was utilized to identify prognosis-related WM regions on diffusion imaging features. RESULTS Lasso identified seven prognosis-related WM regions: the bilateral posterior corona radiata, bilateral posterior limb of the internal capsule, the left retrolenticular part of the internal capsule, the left sagittal stratum, and the right fornix/stria terminalis. Some of these regions showed lower mean fractional anisotropy (FA) values in patients with PD than in HCs. The predicted PDSS scores using FA from these regions consistently correlated with the actual prognosis in all periods. LIMITATIONS This study had limited ability to evaluate individual longitudinal changes in detail owing to the data acquisition time and brain atlas resolution. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest the possibility of using structural WM connectivity as a biomarker for the clinical characterization of PD. Our findings will expand our understanding of the neurobiology of PD and improve biomarker-based prognosis prediction in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early and accurate diagnosis of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PDA) is crucial to reducing disease burden and individual suffering. However, its diagnosis is challenging for lack of validated biomarkers. This study aimed to investigate whether radiomic features extracted from T1-weighted images (T1) of major fear-circuit structures (amygdala, insula, and anterior cingulate cortex [ACC]) could differentiate patients with PDA from healthy controls (HCs). METHODS The 213 participants (93 PDA, 120 HCs) were allocated to training (n = 149) and test (n = 64) sets after undergoing magnetic resonance imaging. Radiomic features (n = 1498) were extracted from T1 of the studied structures. Machine learning models were trained after feature selection and then validated in the test set. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) explored the model interpretability. RESULTS We identified 29 radiomic features to differentiate participants with PDA from HCs. The area under the curve, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the best performing radiomics model in the test set were 0.84 (95% confidence interval: 0.74-0.95), 81.3%, 75.0%, and 86.1%, respectively. The SHAP model explanation suggested that the energy features extracted from the bilateral long insula gyrus and central sulcus of the insula and right ACC were highly associated with the risk of PDA. LIMITATIONS This was a cross-sectional study with a relatively small sample size, and the causality of changes in radiomic features and their biological and clinical meanings remained to be elucidated. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that radiomic features from the fear-circuit structures could unveil hidden microstructural aberrations underlying the pathogenesis of PDA that could help identify PDA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a candidate for susceptibility locus of Panic disorder (PD). However, the findings about the role of the BDNF Val66Met variant in PD were not consistent. Till now, the relationship between BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and anxiety-related traits in PD patients has been rarely explored. This study aimed to explore the relationship among BDNF Val66Met polymorphism, plasma BDNF level and anxiety-related trait in Chinese PD patients. METHOD This multi-center study included 116 PD patients and 99 health controls. We detected single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of BDNF rs6265 (Val66Met) and BDNF plasma level in the two groups. In addition, PD patients were administered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Panic Disorder Severity Scale-Chinese Version (PDSS-CV) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA-14). Quantitative comparison of the differences of BDNF concentration among subjects with different genotypes and association between BDNF Val66Met genotype and trait anxiety were performed. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the genotype frequency (p = 0.79) or allele frequency (p = 0.88) between PD patients and health controls. BDNF plasma levels of PD patients were significantly lower than those in control group (p = 0.003). BDNF plasma levels of the Met/Met genotype were significantly lower than those of Val/Met genotype in PD patients (p = 0.033). PD patients carried Met/Met genotype showed significantly higher scores in STAI trait compared to those carried Val/Val genotype (p = 0.045) and Val/Met genotype (p = 0.018). STAI trait scores of PD patients with agoraphobia were significantly higher than those of patients without agoraphobia (p < 0.05). The ANCOVA showed that the dependent variable STAI trait score was significantly affected by factor "genotype" (Val/Val, Val/Met, Met/Met, p = 0.029), and covariate "agoraphobia" (p = 0.008). In this model, 11.5% of the variance of the STAI trait score was explained by the BDNF genotype. Contrast analysis showed STAI trait scores of Met/Met subjects were significantly higher than those of Val/Met (p = 0.018) and Val/Val individuals (p = 0.045). CONCLUSION We found that anxiety trait was associated with the BDNF polymorphism in PD patients. BDNF Met/Met genotype may decrease plasma BDNF level and increase trait anxiety in panic disorder.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Genome Wide Association study (GWAS) has revealed that the transmembrane protein 132D (TMEM132D) is a gene of sensitive for panic disorder (PD). As the main type of childhood trauma experience, childhood abuse has become a public health issue attracting much attention at home and abroad, and has been proved to be a risk factor for the onset of PD. However, how it affects the occurrence and development of panic disorder has not yet been revealed. We examined the relationship between TMEM132D methylation, childhood abuse and symptoms based on this finding. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two patients with PD and 22 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited after age, gender, and the education level were matched. The DNA methylation levels of CpG sites across the genome were examined with genomic DNA samples (PD, N = 32, controls, N = 22) extracted from subjects' elbow venous blood. A mediation model was used to explore the relationship between the methylation degree of different CpG sites and childhood maltreatment and clinical symptoms. RESULTS We found that the PD group had significantly lower methylation at CpG1, CpG2, CpG3, CpG4, CpG5, CpG6, CpG7, CpG8, CpG11, CpG14, and CpG18 than did the HCs (p < 0.05). The CpG2 (r = 0.5953, p = 0.0117) site in the priming region of TEME132D gene were positively associated with PDSS score. The CpG2 (r = 0.4889, p = 0.046) site in the priming region of TEME132D gene were positively associated with physical abuse. Furthermore, path analyses showed that the methylation of CpG2 of TMEM132D played a fully mediating role in the relationship between physical abuse and PD symptom severity (95. CONCLUSION Childhood abuse experiences, especially physical abuse, are significantly related to PD. The methylation of CpG2 of TMEM132D was shown to have a fully mediating effect between panic disorder and physical abuse. The interaction between TMEM132D methylation and physical abuse can predict panic disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that the thalamus is not a unitary and homogeneous entity but a complex and highly connected archeocortical structure. Although many neuroimaging studies have reported alterations in the thalamus in major depressive disorder (MDD), the structural alterations in thalamic subfields remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate changes in gray matter volume (GMV) in thalamic subfields in MDD patients. METHODS The present study included structural images of 848 MDD patients and 794 age-matched normal controls (NC) from 17 study sites of the REST-meta-MDD consortium. We performed voxel-based morphometric analyses to calculate the GMV in the entire thalamus and its subfields using three different automated anatomical labeling atlases and subsequently compared the differences between first-episode drug-naïve major depressive disorder (FEDN), recurrent major depressive disorder (RMDD), and NC groups. We also evaluated the relationships between thalamic GMV and clinical symptoms in MDD patients. RESULTS Compared to NC, the FEDN patients showed increased GMV in thalamic subfields but not in the entire thalamus, while RMDD patients showed no significant alterations in GMV in the entire thalamus and its subfields. Moreover, the mean GMV in the right anterior thalamus and left anteroventral thalamus in RMDD patients were mildly positively correlated with the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale scores. LIMITATIONS The main limitations are a single-modal analysis based on T1-weighted MR images and a cross-sectional design. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that FEDN and RMDD patients show heterogeneous alterations across thalamic subfields, which may help us understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of MDD.

Abstract
Objectives: Methylation of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS1/nNOS) gene has recently been identified as a promising biomarker of psychiatric disorders. NOS1 plays an essential role in neurite outgrowth and may thus affect the microstructure development of white matter (WM) in the corpus callosum (CC), which is known to be altered in panic disorder (PD). We examined the relationship between NOS1 methylation, WM tracts in the CC, and symptoms based on this finding. Methods: Thirty-two patients with PD and 22 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited after age, gender, and the education level were matched. The cell type used was whole-blood DNA, and DNA methylation of NOS1 was measured at 20 CpG sites in the promoter region. Although 25 patients with PD were assessed with the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans were only collected from 16 participants with PD. Results: We observed that the PD group showed lower methylation than did the HCs group and positive correlations between the symptom severity of PD and methylation at CpG4 and CpG9. In addition, CpG9 methylation was significantly correlated with the fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) values of the CC and its major components (the genu and the splenium) in the PD group. Furthermore, path analyses showed that CpG9 methylation offers a mediating effect for the association between the MD values of the genu of the CC and PD symptom severity (95% CI = −1.731 to −0.034). Conclusions: The results suggest that CpG9 methylation leads to atypical development of the genu of the CC, resulting in higher PD symptom severity, adding support for the methylation of NOS1 as a future prognostic indicator of PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders during adolescence, and early diagnosis and treatment are important. We aimed to characterize the microstructure of the brain in medication-naïve adolescents with first-episode MDD. METHODS Patients with MDD (N = 31) and healthy controls (N = 27) participated in this study and severity of depressive symptoms, duration of untreated depressive episode, demographic data, and diffuse tensor imaging data were collected. A comparative analysis of patients and healthy controls was performed, and the effect of medication on the brain`s integrity was investigated through comparison before and after 3 months of treatment in the patient group. Tract-based spatial statistics was used for diffusion tensor image analysis. RESULTS In the patient group, functional anisotropy (FA) values were significantly higher at the genu of the corpus callosum, body of the corpus callosum, and right anterior corona radiata than in healthy controls. After 3 months of treatment, FA values were significantly decreased in the left anterior limb of the internal capsule, left posterior limb of the internal capsule, and left superior longitudinal fasciculus. LIMITATIONS The sample size is relatively small and 3-month treatment period was relatively short. CONCLUSION FA values of patients with MDD were increased compared to healthy controls and decreased after treatment. These results suggested that pharmacological treatments in the early stages of MDD might restore the brain`s integrity.

Abstract
Disrupted interoceptive processes are present in a range of psychiatric conditions, and there is a small but growing body of research on the role of interoception in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In this review, we outline dimensions of interoception and review current literature on the processing of internal bodily sensations within OCD. Investigations in OCD utilizing objective measures of interoception are limited and results mixed, however, the subjective experience of internal bodily sensations appears to be atypical and relate to specific patterns of symptom dimensions. Further, neuroimaging investigations suggest that interoception is related to core features of OCD, particularly sensory phenomena and disgust. Interoception is discussed in the context of treatment by presenting an overview of existing interventions and suggesting how modifications aimed at better targeting interoceptive processes could serve to optimize outcomes. Interoception represents a promising direction for multi-method research in OCD, which we expect, will prove useful for improving current interventions and identifying new treatment targets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early trauma (ET) is a risk factor for adult psychiatric disorders. ET exposure is known to cause structural brain alterations, particularly in the fronto-temporo-limbic circuitry. ET-related effects on brain development may differ based on individual characteristics and cause different psychiatric outcomes. We investigated the interaction effect of ET exposure and panic disorder (PD) on cortical thickness. METHODS Sixty-six participants with PD and 66 healthy controls were enrolled. High-resolution T1-weighted images were acquired, and a whole-brain vertex-based analysis was performed to estimate cortical thickness. The Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form, Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory-Revised, Panic Disorder Severity Scale, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Beck Anxiety Inventory were administered. RESULTS There was a significant interaction between ET exposure and PD on the mean cortical thickness in the bilateral insula and right pars triangularis. An exploratory correlational analysis revealed a positive correlation between the mean cortical thickness in the left insula and severity of anxiety sensitivity to cardiovascular symptoms in participants with PD. LIMITATIONS Our findings may be affected by recall bias because this study is limited by its retrospective cross-sectional design. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that ET exposure may affect brain structures differently based on a diagnosis of PD. Furthermore, individual variations in brain alterations after ET may confer trait vulnerability that triggers the development of PD. Future longitudinal studies are warranted to elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying ET and psychiatric outcomes.

Abstract
While stress may be a potential mechanism by which childhood threat and deprivation influence mental health, few studies have considered specific stress‐related white matter pathways, such as the stria terminalis (ST) and medial forebrain bundle (MFB). Our goal was to examine the relationships between childhood adversity and ST and MFB structural integrity and whether these pathways may provide a link between childhood adversity and affective symptoms and disorders. Participants were young adults (n = 100) with a full distribution of maltreatment history and affective symptom severity. Threat was determined by measures of childhood abuse and repeated traumatic events. Socioeconomic deprivation (SED) was determined by a measure of childhood socioeconomic status (parental education). Participants underwent diffusion spectrum imaging. Human Connectome Project data was used to perform ST and MFB tractography; these tracts were used as ROIs to extract generalized fractional anisotropy (gFA) from each participant. Childhood threat was associated with ST gFA, such that greater threat was associated with less ST gFA. SED was also associated with ST gFA, however, conversely to threat, greater SED was associated with greater ST gFA. Additionally, threat was negatively associated with MFB gFA, and MFB gFA was negatively associated with post‐traumatic stress symptoms. Our results suggest that childhood threat and deprivation have opposing influences on ST structural integrity, providing new evidence that the context of childhood adversity may have an important influence on its neurobiological effects, even on the same structure. Further, the MFB may provide a novel link between childhood threat and affective symptoms.

Abstract
Panic disorder (PD) is a harmful mental condition that causes relapsed and persistent impairment. In the treatment of PD, the prognosis for PD should be considered. However, the relationship between pharmacotherapy and biomarkers, for predicting a better response through neuroimaging, is a little known. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether there would be the initial white matter (WM) regions associated with the remission in 6 months. A total of 104 patients with PD were investigated in the study. After six months, there were 17 remission patients with PD and 81 non-remission patients. The Panic Disorder Severity Scale, Albany Panic and Phobia Questionnaire, Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory-Revised, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory were assessed for all patients at baseline. We compared the diffusion indices between remission and non-remission group at 6 months using Tract-Based Spatial Statistics. The results showed that the fractional anisotropy (FA) values were significantly higher in the non-remitter group compared with those in the remitter group in the WM regions, such as the posterior corona radiata and superior longitudinal fasciculus, at the 6 month evaluation. The logistic regression analysis with clinical symptom severity and FA values of the WM regions as covariates showed that FA values in those regions and the Beck Depression Inventory-II predicted poor remission. This study suggests that posterior corona radiata and superior longitudinal fasciculus are related to potential predictive factors of 6-month remission in patients with PD. WM regions associated with the long-term remission should be verified with further investigations.

Abstract
Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a multidimensional construct associated with the etiology and maintenance of panic disorder (PD) symptoms. However, only a few studies have evaluated whether cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) can modify the condition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of CBGT on AS in patients with PD and to analyze AS and its dimensions as predictors of response to CBGT. In the present clinical trial, an intervention group (n = 37) attended 12 CBGT sessions, while a control group (n = 52) did not receive any intervention. The severity of symptoms and of AS were evaluated before and after CBGT in the intervention group and once in the control group. Significant improvement occurred in all specific PD symptoms and in general anxiety and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, AS scores reduced significantly after intervention. This study confirmed that AS is higher in patients with more severe PD. The effectiveness of CBGT for reducing the physical, cognitive, and social dimensions of AS was also observed, supporting the hypothesis of a positive impact of therapy.

Abstract
Background:
Panic disorder (PD) is a kind of anxiety disorder that impacts the life quality
and functional perspectives in patients. However, the pathophysiological study of PD seems still
inadequate and many unresolved issues need to be clarified.
Objectives:
In this review article of biomarkers in PD, the investigator will focus on the findings of
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain in the pathophysiology study. The MRI biomarkers
would be divided into several categories, on the basis of structural and functional perspectives.
Methods:
The structural category would include the gray matter and white matter tract studies. The
functional category would consist of functional MRI (fMRI), resting-state fMRI (Rs-fMRI), and
magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). The PD biomarkers revealed by the above methodologies
would be discussed in this article.
Results:
For the gray matter perspectives, the PD patients would have alterations in the volumes of
fear network structures, such as the amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, thalamus, anterior cingulate
cortex, insula, and frontal regions. For the white matter tract studies, the PD patients seemed to have
alterations in the fasciculus linking the fear network regions, such as the anterior thalamic radiation,
uncinate fasciculus, fronto-occipital fasciculus, and superior longitudinal fasciculus. For the fMRI
studies in PD, the significant results also focused on the fear network regions, such as the amygdala,
hippocampus, thalamus, insula, and frontal regions. For the Rs-fMRI studies, PD patients seemed to
have alterations in the regions of the default mode network and fear network model. At last, the
MRS results showed alterations in neuron metabolites of the hippocampus, amygdala, occipital
cortex, and frontal regions.
Conclusion:
The MRI biomarkers in PD might be compatible with the extended fear network model
hypothesis in PD, which included the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, insula, frontal regions, and
sensory-related cortex.

Abstract
During emergencies, people are more or less capable of performing adequately. Knowledge about human behavior while facing emergencies has become more significant nowadays. This knowledge can help improving our already present defensive responses and natural coping mechanisms when facing imminent dangers, natural disasters, and catastrophes. A new method is here offered to explore the core points of this topic. The Emergency Reaction Questionnaire (ERQ), is proposed for predicting one's reaction and behaviour in an emergency. First, a large item pool was created based on interviews with people facing emergencies on a weekly basis and related literature. The factor structure, reliability and validity were assessed on a large sample of lay people (N = 1115, 440 males) and specific groups of firefighters and people doing extreme sports (N = 85, all males). Participants were Caucasian with an age range of 18-70. We also used measures of anxiety, depression, and sensation seeking, behavioral inhibition and activation and coping in stressful situations. The ERQ was proved to be reliable and consistent in time and having sound psychometric properties both on the community and special samples. Results show that psychometric properties are satisfying; the test has excellent validity ratings. Consequently, the ERQ can be used in future research effectively and facilitate a better understanding of how people react in a highly dangerous situation. Future directions in the utilization of the new method are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met (rs6265) polymorphism is suggested to be associated with the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders, including panic disorder (PD). Although the fronto-limbic white matter (WM) microstructures have been investigated, the corpus callosum (CC) has not yet been studied regarding its relationship with BDNF Val66Met polymorphism in PD. METHODS Ninety-five PD patients were enrolled. The Neuroticism, the Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory-Revised, Panic Disorder Severity Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) were administered. Voxel-wise statistical analysis of diffusion tensor imaging data was performed within the CC regions using Tract-Based Spatial Statistics. RESULTS The GG genotype in BDNF Val66Met polymorphism has significantly higher fractional anisotropy (FA) values of the body and splenium of the CC, neuroticism and depressive symptom scale scores than the non-GG genotype in PD. The FA values of the body of the CC in the two groups were significantly different independent of age, sex, neuroticism, and BDI-II. CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrate that the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism is associated with WM connectivity of the body and splenium of the CC, and may be related to neuroticism and depressive symptoms in PD. Additionally, the CC connectivity according to BDNF polymorphism may play a role in the pathophysiology of PD.

Abstract
Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is an individual difference factor reflecting the fear of anxiety-related sensations and is one of the best researched risk factors for psychopathology. Decades of research have focused on exploring the relations between AS and clinical symptoms and disorders, although most of the research has employed self-report or interview-based methodologies to index primary dependent measures. No past research has sought to characterize the explanatory relevance of AS from a body kinematics perspective. The present study explored AS in relation to body kinematics to AS-specific images using a dual-task attentional control paradigm (i.e., approach versus avoidance) that employs AS-specific stimuli and motion-tracking technology. Participants included 108 young adults (58.3% female, M age = 25.3) who took part in a ball catching game to index their measures of behavioral engagement with the AS-specific and neutral stimuli presented at either side of the game environment. After adjusting for age, gender, race, handedness, physical functioning, and negative affectivity, self-reported AS was significantly associated with biokinematically-driven behavioral engagement with the AS-specific stimuli. The present study provides novel empirical evidence that AS is related to anxiety-related bodily kinematics. Future work is needed to extend the current results to clinical samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early trauma exposure is suggested to confer a greater risk for the development of panic disorder (PD) by altering neurodevelopmental processes. A body of studies have shown that white matter microstructures, particularly in the fronto-limbic and callosal regions, could be affected by a history of early trauma in patients with PD. The tapetum, the extended posterior part of the corpus callosum connecting the bilateral temporal lobes, has not yet been studied regarding its relationship with early trauma, especially sexual one. METHODS Seventy participants with PD, sixty age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. The Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF), Neuroticism Scale, and Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) were administered. Voxel-wise statistical analysis of diffusion tensor imaging data was performed within the bilateral tapetum regions using Tract-Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS). RESULTS In participants with PD, higher levels of sexual trauma were significantly associated with the increased fractional anisotropies (FAs) in a cluster of the right tapetum. Exploratory correlation analysis revealed that FAs in this cluster were significantly correlated with higher neuroticism and poorer treatment response after one year of pharmacotherapy. No significant correlation was found between FAs of the right tapetum cluster and the PDSS scores. LIMITATIONS The possibility of retrospective recall bias for early trauma cannot be completely ruled out. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest that the right tapetum may serve as a potential neural marker of early sexual trauma in patients with PD and contribute to personal vulnerability and poorer treatment outcome after pharmacotherapy.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive fear and anxiety and related behavioral disturbances. Because diffusion tensor imaging is sensitive to detect subtle pathology of the brain, it has been used to characterize differences in white matter microstructure for a broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders. The neurobiological underpinnings of a trait anxiety seem to be associated with the uncinate fasciculus, a major pathway between the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex. Apparent WM micro-alterations in patients with panic disorder are present in diverse and widespread regions, although alterations vary in terms of clinical symptom severity and comorbidities. Social anxiety disorder is associated with structural dysconnectivity in a fronto-limbic network consistent with reduced fractional anisotropy values in uncinate fasciculus and inferior longitudinal fasciculus. The pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder may include abnormal findings in not only the fronto-striato-thalamic circuit but also the posterior and temporal regions of forceps major and cingulum bundle. Studies of white matter status in anxiety revealed overlapping patterns of front-cortical and fronto-limbic changes with uncinate fasciculus and cingulum alterations a frequent component.

Abstract
Rapid emotion processing is an ecologically essential ability for survival in social environments in which threatening or advantageous encounters dynamically and rapidly occur. Efficient emotion recognition is subserved by different processes, depending on one's expectations; however, the underlying functional and structural circuitry is still poorly understood. In this study, we delineate brain networks that subserve fast recognition of emotion in situations either congruent or incongruent with prior expectations. For this purpose, we used multimodal neuroimaging and investigated performance on a dynamic emotion perception task. We show that the extended amygdala structural and functional networks relate to speed of emotion processing under threatening conditions. Specifically, increased microstructure of the right stria terminalis, an amygdala white-matter pathway, was related to faster detection of emotion during actual presentation of anger or after cueing anger. Moreover, functional connectivity of right amygdala with limbic regions was related to faster detection of anger congruent with cue, suggesting selective attention to threat. On the contrary, we found that faster detection of anger incongruent with cue engaged the ventral attention "reorienting" network. Faster detection of happiness, in either expectancy context, engaged a widespread frontotemporal-subcortical functional network. These findings shed light on the functional and structural circuitries that facilitate speed of emotion recognition and, for the first time, elucidate a role for the stria terminalis in human emotion processing.

Depression and panic disorder (PD) share the common pathophysiology from the perspectives of neurotransmitters. The relatively high comorbidity between depression and PD contributes to the substantial obstacles to differentiate from depression and PD, especially for the brain pathophysiology. There are significant differences in the diagnostic criteria between depression and PD. However, the paradox of similar pathophysiology and different diagnostic criteria in these two disorders were still the issues needing to be addressed. Therefore the clarification of potential difference in the field of neuroscience and pathophysiology between depression and PD can help the clinicians and scientists to understand more comprehensively about significant differences between depression and PD. The researchers should be curious about the underlying difference of pathophysiology beneath the significant distinction of clinical symptoms. In this review article, I tried to find some evidences for the differences between depression and PD, especially for neural markers revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The distinctions of structural and functional alterations in depression and PD are reviewed. From the structural perspectives, PD seems to have less severe gray matter alterations in frontal and temporal lobes than depression. The study of white matter microintegrity reveals more widespread alterations in fronto-limbic circuit of depression patients than PD patients, such as the uncinate fasciculus and anterior thalamic radiation. PD might have a more restrictive pattern of structural alterations when compared to depression. For the functional perspectives, the core site of depression pathophysiology is the anterior subnetwork of resting-state network, such as anterior cingulate cortex, which is not significantly altered in PD. A possibly emerging pattern of fronto-limbic distinction between depression and PD has been revealed by these explorative reports. The future trend for machine learning and pattern recognition might confirm the differentiation pattern between depression and PD based on the explorative results.

Abstract
Psychiatric symptoms and motor impairment are major contributions to the poor quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we applied a novel diffusion-weighted imaging approach, diffusion MRI connectometry, to investigate the correlation of quality of life, evaluated by Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ39) with the white matter structural connectivity in 27 non-demented PD patients (disease duration of 5.3 ± 2.9 years, H and Y stage = 1.5 ± 0.6, UPDRS-III = 13.7 ± 6.5, indicating unilateral and mild motor involvement). The connectometry analysis demonstrated bilateral posterior limbs of the internal capsule (PLIC) with increased connectivity related to the higher quality of life (FDR = 0.027) in a multiple regression model. The present study suggests for the first time a neural basis of the quality of life in PD in the light of major determinants of poor quality of life in these patients: anxiety, depression, apathy and motor impairment. Results in our sample of non-demented PD patients with relatively mild motor impairment and no apparent sign of depression/anxiety also identify a unique and inexplicable association of the PLIC to the quality of life in PD patients.

Abstract
Mood depressive disorder is one of the most disabling chronic diseases with a high rate of everyday life disability that affects 350 million people around the world. Recent advances in neuroimaging have reported widespread structural abnormalities, suggesting a dysfunctional frontal-limbic circuit involved in the pathophysiological mechanisms of depression. However, a variety of different white matter regions has been implicated and is sought to suffer from lack of reproducibility of such categorical-based biomarkers. These inconsistent results might be attributed to various factors: actual categorical definition of depression as well as clinical phenotype variability. In this study, we 1/ examined WM changes in a large cohort (114 patients) compared to a healthy control group and 2/ sought to identify specific WM alterations in relation to specific depressive phenotypes such as anhedonia (i.e. lack of pleasure), anxiety and psychomotor retardation –three core symptoms involved in depression. Consistent with previous studies, reduced white matter was observed in the genu of the corpus callosum extending to the inferior fasciculus and posterior thalamic radiation, confirming a frontal-limbic circuit abnormality. Our analysis also reported other patterns of increased fractional anisotropy and axial diffusivity as well as decreased apparent diffusion coefficient and radial diffusivity in the splenium of the corpus callosum and posterior limb of the internal capsule. Moreover, a positive correlation between FA and anhedonia was found in the superior longitudinal fasciculus as well as a negative correlation in the cingulum. Then, the analysis of the anxiety and diffusion metric revealed that increased anxiety was associated with greater FA values in genu and splenium of corpus callosum, anterior corona radiata and posterior thalamic radiation. Finally, the motor retardation analysis showed a correlation between increased Widlöcher depressive retardation scale scores and reduced FA in the body and genu of the corpus callosum, fornix, and superior striatum. Through this twofold approach (categorical and phenotypic), this study has underlined the need to move forward to a symptom-based research area of biomarkers, which help to understand the pathophysiology of mood depressive disorders and to stratify precise phenotypes of depression with targeted therapeutic strategies. Mood depressive disorder is one of the most disabling chronic disease. Past studies of diffusion analysis had found inconsistent results. We analyzed white matter integrity in a large cohort of depressed patients. We conducted both categorical and dimensional approaches. In the future, these biomarkers could help to develop new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Increasing data indicate that prevalent forms of psychopathology can be organized into second-order dimensions based on their correlations, including a general factor of psychopathology that explains the common variance among all disorders and specific second-order externalizing and internalizing factors. Nevertheless, most existing studies on the neural correlates of psychopathology employ case-control designs that treat diagnoses as independent categories, ignoring the highly correlated nature of psychopathology. Thus, for instance, although perturbations in white matter microstructure have been identified across a range of mental disorders, nearly all such studies used case-control designs, leaving it unclear whether observed relations reflect disorder-specific characteristics or transdiagnostic associations. Using a representative sample of 410 young adult twins oversampled for psychopathology risk, we tested the hypothesis that some previously observed relations between white matter microstructure properties in major tracts and specific disorders are related to second-order factors of psychopathology. We examined fractional anisotropy (FA), radial diffusivity (RD), and axial diffusivity (AD). White matter correlates of all second-order factors were identified after controlling for multiple statistical tests, including the general factor (FA in the body of the corpus callosum), specific internalizing (AD in the fornix), and specific externalizing (AD in the splenium of the corpus callosum, sagittal stratum, anterior corona radiata, and internal capsule). These findings suggest that some features of white matter within specific tracts may be transdiagnostically associated multiple forms of psychopathology through second-order factors of psychopathology rather with than individual mental disorders.

Abstract
Individuals with elevated symptoms of depression exhibit alterations in white matter integrity, including lower fractional anisotropy (FA) evident on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Similarly, individuals with a history of early life stress (ELS) exhibit lower FA in the white matter independent of concurrent depression. Prior studies have not determined whether the neuroimaging signature of comorbid ELS and adult depression differs from the pattern of brain white matter changes associated with depression in the absence of self-reported ELS. The current study examined FA in multiple white matter tracts in 186 adults (93 males; 93 females) with a current diagnosis of major depressive disorder, including 88 who reported a history of bullying before the age of 18 (43 males; 45 females). All patients were antidepressant medication free at the time of testing. After adjusting for demographics and other ELS subtypes, participants with a history of bullying exhibited increased FA in the right medial lemniscus (p =.039) and left posterior corona radiata (p =.008) compared to participants with depression but no self-reported history of bullying. Both groups endorsed similar levels of depression. Group differences were most pronounced among individuals who endorsed bullying in late adolescence (14-17 years of age). Results suggest bullying in late adolescence is uniquely related to abnormal brain microstructure among individuals with current diagnoses of depression, possibly due to an overactive fear response. Further work is needed to differentiate why ELS within bullying is associated with higher FA.

Abstract
The core concept for pathophysiology in panic disorder (PD) is the fear network model (FNM). The alterations in FNM might be linked with disturbances in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which is a common phenomenon in PD. The traditional FNM included the frontal and limbic regions, which were dysregulated in the feedback mechanism for cognitive control of frontal lobe over the primitive response of limbic system. The exaggerated responses of limbic system are also associated with dysregulation in the neurotransmitter system. The neuroimaging studies also corresponded to FNM concept. However, more extended areas of FNM have been discovered in recent imaging studies, such as sensory regions of occipital, parietal cortex and temporal cortex and insula. The insula might integrate the filtered sensory information via thalamus from the visuospatial and other sensory modalities related to occipital, parietal and temporal lobes. In this review article, the traditional and advanced FNM would be discussed. I would also focus on the current evidences of insula, temporal, parietal and occipital lobes in the pathophysiology. In addition, the white matter and functional connectome studies would be reviewed to support the concept of advanced FNM. An emerging dysregulation model of fronto-limbic-insula and temporooccipito-parietal areas might be revealed according to the combined results of recent neuroimaging studies. The future delineation of advanced FNM model can be beneficial from more extensive and advanced studies focusing on the additional sensory regions of occipital, parietal and temporal cortex to confirm the role of advanced FNM in the pathophysiology of PD.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of panic disorder (PD) have discovered various damaged brain regions, with heterogeneous results across studies. The present study used meta-analytic approaches to discover gray matter (GM) changes consistently detected in PD and to characterize the functional and connectivity profiles of these regions. In the present study we first conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of eight eligible whole-brain VBM studies. Then, meta-analytic connectivity modeling analyses (MACMs) were used to provide co-atrophy and co-activation profiles across all the experiments stored in BrainMap. Lastly, the co-atrophied and co-activated regions were analyzed using functional decoding to reveal their functions. Lower gray matter volume was found in the bilateral dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC), left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), right insula, right superior temporal gyrus (STG), right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and right superior orbital frontal cortex (OFC). Significant co-atrophies were found in the STG, DMPFC and OFC and co-activations were found between the left DLPFC and bilateral DMPFC. Decreased gray matter volume in STG, OFC, DLPFC and DMPFC and their co-atrophy and co-activation patterns indicate the damaged higher cognitive functions in PD and suggest that cortical regions are important structural imaging biomarkers in PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well accepted that panic disorder (PD) is associated with early trauma, and that the limbic systems are one of the main structures involved in PD pathophysiology. However, previous studies have not addressed the relationship between early trauma and major limbic white-matter (WM) structures in PD. METHODS Participants enrolled in the study consisted of 53 right-handed patients with PD and 21 healthy controls (HC). The Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF), Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory-Revised (ASI-R), and the Albany Panic and Phobia Questionnaire (APPQ) were applied in the study. Tract-based spatial statistics were used for diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging analysis. RESULTS Among the patients with PD, the fractional anisotropy (FA) values of the fornix body in major limbic WM regions showed significant negative correlation with the ETISR-SF total score, while the scores of mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD) in the same region of fornix had significant positive correlation with those scores (p<0.05; FWE corrected). Further significant correlation was observed between these four scores and the measures of symptom severity in PD, such as that in ASI-R and APPQ in the same region. LIMITATIONS Recall bias is possible in evaluating early trauma in the participants. CONCLUSIONS The current study suggests a significant association of early trauma with the fornix body possibly through axons and myelin disruptions within major limbic structures in PD. A multi-centered large sample will be needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE Recent neuroimaging findings have revealed that paralimbic and prefrontal regions are involved in panic disorder (PD). However, no imaging studies have compared differences in cortical thickness between patients with PD and healthy control (HC) subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-seven right-handed patients with PD who met the diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-4th edition-text revision, and 30 HC subjects were enrolled. We used the FreeSurfer software package for estimating the cortical thickness of regions of interest, including the temporal pole, insula, and pars triangularis (mid-ventrolateral prefrontal cortex). RESULTS Cortical thickness of the temporal pole (p=0.033, right), insula (p=0.017, left), and pars triangularis (p=0.008, left; p=0.025, right) in patients with PD was significantly lower, compared with HC subjects (Benjamini-Hochberg false discovery rate correction). Exploratory analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the cortical thickness of the right temporal pole and Beck Depression Inventory scores (r=-0.333, p=0.027) in patients with PD and positive correlations between the cortical thickness of the left pars triangularis and Panic Disorder Severity Scale (r=0.429, p=0.004), Anxiety Sensitivity Index-Revised (r=0.380, p=0.011), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (r=0.421, p=0.004) scores using Pearson's correlation. CONCLUSION Ours study is the first to demonstrate cortical thickness reduction in the temporal pole, insula, and pars triangularis in patients with PD, compared with the HC subjects. These findings suggest that reduced cortical thickness could play an important role in the pathophysiology of PD.
