Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is often misidentified as unipolar depression (UD) during its early stages, typically until the onset of the first manic episode. This study aimed to explore both shared and unique neurostructural changes in patients who transitioned from UD to BD during follow-up, as compared to those with UD. METHODS This study utilized high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to collect brain data from individuals initially diagnosed with UD. During the average 3-year follow-up, 24 of the UD patients converted to BD (cBD). For comparison, the study included 48 demographically matched UD patients who did not convert and 48 healthy controls. The MRI data underwent preprocessing using FreeSurfer, followed by surface-based morphometry (SBM) analysis to identify cortical thickness (CT), surface area (SA), and cortical volume (CV) among groups. RESULTS The SBM analysis identified shared neurostructural characteristics between the cBD and UD groups, specifically thinner CT in the right precentral cortex compared to controls. Unique to the cBD group, there was a greater SA in the right inferior parietal cortex compared to the UD group. Furthermore, no significant correlations were observed between cortical morphological measures and cognitive performance and clinical features in the cBD and UD groups. LIMITATIONS The sample size is relatively small. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that while cBD and UD exhibit some common alterations in cortical macrostructure, numerous distinct differences are also present. These differences offer valuable insights into the neuropathological underpinnings that distinguish these two conditions.

Abstract
Importance Not all people who die by suicide have a psychiatric diagnosis; yet, little is known about the percentage and demographics of individuals with lifetime suicide attempts who are apparently psychiatrically healthy. If such suicide attempts are common, there are implications for suicide risk screening, research, policy, and nosology. Objective To estimate the percentage of people with lifetime suicide attempts whose first attempt occurred prior to onset of any psychiatric disorder. Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study used data from the US National Epidemiologic Study of Addictions and Related Conditions III (NESARC-III), a cross-sectional face-to-face survey conducted with a nationally representative sample of the US civilian noninstitutionalized population, and included persons with lifetime suicide attempts who were aged 20 to 65 years at survey administration (April 2012 to June 2013). Data from the NESARC, Wave 2 survey from August 2004 to September 2005 were used for replication. Analyses were performed from April to August 2023. Exposure Lifetime suicide attempts. Main Outcomes and Measures The main outcome was presence or absence of a psychiatric disorder before the first lifetime suicide attempt. Among persons with lifetime suicide attempts, the percentage and 95% CI of those whose first suicide attempt occurred before the onset of any apparent psychiatric disorders was calculated, weighted by NESARC sampling and nonresponse weights. Separate analyses were performed for males, females, and 3 age groups (20 to <35, 35-50, and >50 to 65 years). Results In the total sample of 36 309 respondents, 1948 persons had lifetime suicide attempts; 66.8% (95% CI, 64.1%-69.4%) were female, and 6.2% (95% CI, 4.9%-7.4%) had no apparent lifetime psychiatric diagnoses when surveyed. In addition, 13.4% (95% CI, 11.6%-15.2%) made their first suicide attempt prior to psychiatric disorder onset. Thus, an estimated 19.6% of respondents first attempted suicide without an antecedent psychiatric disorder. No significant age or sex differences were detected in the percentage of those with lifetime suicide attempts absent psychiatric disorders, although females were more likely than males to attempt suicide in the year of psychiatric disorder onset (14.9% [95% CI, 12.5%-17.3%] vs 8.6% [95% CI, 6.0%-11.2%]; P < .001), and attempts were less frequent among those older than 50 to 65 years (3.9% [95% CI, 3.5%-4.4%] vs 6.1% [95% CI, 5.4%-6.8%] for 35-50 years and 6.2% [95% CI, 5.6%-6.9%] for 20 to <35 years; P < .001). Conclusions and Relevance In this study, an estimated 19.6% of individuals who attempted suicide did so despite not meeting criteria for an antecedent psychiatric disorder. This finding challenges clinical notions of who is at risk for suicidal behavior and raises questions about the safety of limiting suicide risk screening to psychiatric populations.

Abstract
Decedents with no known mental disorder comprise 5-40% of suicides, suggesting that suicide ideation (SI) and behavior may occur in the psychiatrically healthy with important implications for suicide risk screening. Healthy Volunteers (HV) and patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) provided 7 days of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data about SI and stressors. Longitudinal mixed effects logistic regression models compared HV and patient SI and stressors. Mixed effects linear regression models compared HVs' and patients' SI score change from the previous epoch's SI score when each stressor occurred. HVs (n = 42) reported less frequent (p < 0.001) and less intense SI (p < 0.003) than patients (n = 80), yet did endorse SI and/or SI-related items in 44% of EMA epochs, endorsing SI items in 25% of epochs with non-zero SI scores. For 7 of 8 stressors, patients reported stressors more often than HVs (all p < 0.001) responding to them with increased SI (0.0001 < p < 0.0472). HVs were relatively resilient to stressors, reporting SI increases only in response to neglect (p < 0.0147). Although SI and SAs are documented among psychiatrically healthy individuals, scientific attention to these observations has been scant. Real-time SI measurement showed that HVs' SI was less pronounced than MDD patients', but was endorsed, nonetheless. Patients were more likely to report stressors than HVs, perhaps due to greater sensitivity to the environment, and reported SI in response to stressors, which was less common in HVs. Both MDD patients and HVs most often manifested passive SI (viz, "decreased wish to live"). However, passive SI (viz, "desire for death"), may predict suicide, even absent SI per se (thinking about killing yourself). This study validates the utility of real-time SI assessment, showing that HVs endorse SI items in 11% of epochs, which implies that suicide risk screening focused on those with mental disorders may be too narrow an approach.

Abstract
Suicide is prevalent among young adults, and epidemiological studies indicate that insomnia, nightmares, and depression are significantly associated with a high incidence of suicidal ideation (SI). However, the causal relationship between these factors and SI remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between nightmares and depression and insomnia and SI in young adults, as well as to develop a mediation model to investigate the causal relationship between insomnia, nightmare, depression, and SI. We assessed insomnia, nightmares, depression, and SI in 546 young adults using the Insomnia Severity Scale (ISI), Disturbing Dream and Nightmare Severity Scale (DDNSI), Depression Study Scale (CESD-20), and Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). Using the Bootstrap method, the mediation effects of nightmares and depression between insomnia and SI were calculated. The results demonstrated that nightmares and depression fully mediated the relationship between insomnia and SI, including the chain-mediation of insomnia and SI between nightmare and depression with an effect value of 0.02, 95% CI 0.01-0.04, and depression as a mediator between insomnia and SI with an effect value of 0.22, 95% CI 0.15-0.29. This study found that depression and nightmares may be risk and predictive factors between insomnia and SI, which implies that the assessment and treatment of depression and the simple or linked effect of nightmares play crucial roles in preventing SI in young adults.

Abstract
Background Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), a transdiagnostic behavior, often emerges during adolescence. This study used the Research Domain Criteria approach to examine cognitive control (CC) with a focus on response inhibition and urgency relative to NSSI severity in adolescents. Methods One hundred thirty-eight adolescents, assigned female sex at birth, with a continuum of NSSI severity completed negative and positive urgency measurements (self-report), an emotional Go/NoGo task within negative and positive contexts (behavioral), and structural and functional imaging during resting state and task (brain metrics). Cortical thickness, subcortical volume, resting-state functional connectivity, and task activation focused on an a priori-defined CC network. Eighty-four participants had all these main measures. Correlations and stepwise model selection followed by multiple regression were used to examine the association between NSSI severity and multiunit CC measurements. Results Higher NSSI severity correlated with higher negative urgency and lower accuracy during positive no-inhibition (Go). Brain NSSI severity correlates varied across modalities and valence. For right medial prefrontal cortex and right caudate, higher NSSI severity correlated with greater negative but lower positive inhibition (NoGo) activation. The opposite pattern was observed for the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Higher NSSI severity correlated with lower left dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) negative inhibition activation and thicker left dorsal ACC, yet it was correlated with higher right rostral ACC positive inhibition activation and thinner right rostral ACC, as well as lower CC network resting-state functional connectivity. Conclusions Findings revealed multifaceted signatures of NSSI severity across CC units of analysis, confirming the relevance of this domain in adolescent NSSI and illustrating how multimodal approaches can shed light on psychopathology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older adults with bipolar disorder (BD) have received little study, although they often have severe symptoms, treatment resistance and high suicide risk. Furthermore, a subset develops cognitive dysfunction for unknown reasons. METHODS Here, cortical thickness and subcortical gray matter volume were compared across individuals ages 40-79y: 103 with BD ("later-onset" at ages ≥25y, n = 21; "early-onset" < 25y, n = 82) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 98). RESULTS Overall, those with BD showed lower prefrontal, cingulate, sensorimotor, parahippocampal, insula, temporal, parietal, and occipital cortical thickness (Cohen's d: 0.4 to 0.8) and hippocampal, amygdalar, thalamic, and striatal gray matter volume (d: 0.6 to 0.8). Later-onset BD showed negative relationships between age and parahippocampal, insular, temporal, parietal, and occipital cortical thickness, and hippocampal, thalamic and striatal volume (r: -0.7 to -0.4). Suicide attempt history was associated with lower dorsolateral prefrontal cortical thickness (d = 0.5). LIMITATIONS The study used a cross-sectional design and the sample of those with a later-onset of BD was relatively modest. CONCLUSIONS Results support widespread gray matter decreases in older adults with BD, and also suggest a separable later-onset phenotype characterized by age-related gray matter reductions in regions subserving cognitive, emotional and perceptual processes. Moreover, the results are the first to demonstrate structural brain differences associated with a history of suicide attempts in older adults with BD.

Abstract
THE AIM OF THE STUDY Was to identify the cerebral areas, which demonstrate the most significant structural changes and damaged functional activity in patients with suicidal behavior. The original studies, presented in PubMed database, were used to analyze the literature. Additional literature in the form of atlases, review articles and publications, written in related spheres, was used to interpret the results. The study identified the 69 cerebral regions, demonstrating significant changes and the structures with the most significant deviations among them were selected. The regions of cerebral grey matter, in particular basal ganglia (structures of striatum and limbic system), as well as selected regions of cerebral cortex, specifically frontal, insularis, singulate and parietal mostly were included in the list. The decrease in grey matter volume, changes of neuronal and glial density, special patterns of activity and variations of functional association with other cerebral regions are described within mentioned structures. The literature review found that there was a lack of postmortem examinations in suicidal cases. Advanced study of the described structures is required in cases of completed suicide using new research methods.

Abstract
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. Historically, scientific inquiry has focused on psychological theory. However, more recent studies have started to shed light on complex biosignatures using MRI techniques, including task-based and resting-state functional MRI, brain morphometry, and diffusion tensor imaging. Here, we review recent research across these modalities, with a focus on participants with depression and Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior (STB). A PubMed search identified 149 articles specific to our population of study, and this was further refined to rule out more diffuse pathologies such as psychotic disorders and organic brain injury and illness. This left 69 articles which are reviewed in the current study. The collated articles reviewed point to a complex impairment showing atypical functional activation in areas associated with perception of reward, social/affective stimuli, top-down control, and reward-based learning. This is broadly supported by the atypical morphometric and diffusion-weighted alterations and, most significantly, in the network-based resting-state functional connectivity data that extrapolates network functions from well validated psychological paradigms using functional MRI analysis. We see an emerging picture of cognitive dysfunction evident in task-based and resting state fMRI and network neuroscience studies, likely preceded by structural changes best demonstrated in morphometric and diffusion-weighted studies. We propose a clinically-oriented chronology of the diathesis-stress model of suicide and link other areas of research that may be useful to the practicing clinician, while helping to advance the translational study of the neurobiology of suicide.

Abstract
Background The neurobiological basis of suicidal behaviors among female adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) remains largely unclear. Materials and methods Fifty-eight drug-naïve, first-episode female adolescent MDD [including 31 patients with suicidal attempt (SA group) and 27 patients without SA (non-SA group)], and 36 matched healthy controls (HCs) participated in the present study. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on each subject. The metrics of the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), and regional homogeneity (ReHo) were compared among the three groups. Then seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was conducted based on the ALFF/fALFF and ReHo results, which were then correlated to clinical variables. Results Compared with the non-SA group, the SA group exhibited increased fALFF in the bilateral insula and right precentral gyrus, and enhanced ReHo in the left superior temporal gyrus, left middle cingulate cortex, right insula, and right precentral gyrus. Relative to the HCs, the SA group demonstrated additionally reduced fALFF and ReHo in the left middle frontal gyrus. Moreover, the SA group showed increased FC between the right precentral gyrus and the left middle frontal gyrus and left insula, and between the right insula and anterior/middle cingulate cortex compared to the non-SA and HC groups. In addition, the fALFF in the left middle frontal gyrus was positively correlated with the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores, and the values in the fALFF/ReHo in the right insula were positively correlated with the duration of MDD within the patient group. Conclusion These findings highlight the multiple abnormalities of the frontolimbic circuit, which may enhance our understanding of the neurobiological basis underlying female MDD with SA during adolescence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicidal ideation (SI) is a common symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD). Accumulating studies demonstrated that MDD with SI was associated with static alterations in brain activity and functional connectivity. However, given that brain is a highly dynamic system, the changes of brain dynamic patterns in MDD with SI remain unknown. METHODS We included 60 MDD patients with SI (MDD-SI), 58 MDD patients without SI (MDD-NSI), and 58 healthy controls (HCs) who underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. The sliding-window approach was used to calculate the dynamic fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (dfALFF) and dynamic degree centrality (dDC) to characterize the temporal dynamic regional activity and distant functional connectivity. We compared dfALFF and dDC across groups and further conducted correlations between abnormal dynamic metrics and the severity of suicidality. RESULTS In terms of the dynamic regional activity, MDD-SI showed decreased dfALFF in the left lingual gyrus and right middle occipital gyrus compared with MDD-NSI; in terms of the dynamic distant connectivity, MDD-SI showed decreased dDC in the right middle frontal gyrus compared with MDD-NSI. The decreased dDC in the right middle frontal gyrus was correlated with increased severity of suicidality. LIMITATIONS The relatively small sample size. CONCLUSIONS We demonstrate the specific brain dynamic patterns of MDD-SI in regional activity and distant functional connectivity compared to MDD-NSI. Especially the decreased temporal variability of the distant connectivity in the middle frontal gyrus was associated with SI. These altered dynamic patterns may represent a potential neurobiological diathesis of SI in MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Youth with bipolar disorder (BD) are at greatly elevated risk for suicide. Self-harm, encompassing all self-injurious behaviors regardless of suicidal intent, is among one of the greatest risk factors for death by suicide. This study aims to extend the sparse literature regarding the neurostructural correlates of self-harm in youth with BD. METHODS Participants included 156 youth (17.14 ± 1.61 years): 38 BD with lifetime history of self-harm (BDSH+ ), 43 BD without history of self-harm (BDSH- ), and 75 healthy controls (HC). Measures of cortical thickness, surface area (SA), and volume were obtained using 3 T magnetic resonance imaging. Orbitofrontal and ventrolateral prefrontal cortices were examined in region-of-interest (ROI) analyses, complemented by exploratory vertex-wise analyses using a general linear model controlling for age, sex, and intracranial volume. RESULTS In ROI analyses, there were no between-group differences after correction for multiple comparisons. Vertex-wise analysis revealed three significant clusters in precentral gyrus SA, inferior temporal gyrus SA, and caudal middle frontal gyrus volume. Post-hoc vertex-wise analyses showed BDSH+ had lower cortical SA and volume compared with both BDSH- and HC for all clusters. CONCLUSIONS Significant vertex-wise findings were observed in frontotemporal regions relevant to BD and self-harm, with smaller neurostructural measures among BDSH+ compared with both BDSH- and HC. Future studies are needed to evaluate the temporal nature of the relationship of these neurostructural differences (i.e., potential risk indicators) to self-harm and to identify mechanisms underlying these findings.

The Interaction Effects of Suicidal Ideation and Childhood Abuse on Brain Structure and Function in Major Depressive Disorder Patients. Neural Plast 2021; 2021:7088856. Abstract
Suicidal ideation (SI) is a direct risk factor for suicide in patients with depression. Regarding the emergence of SI, previous studies have discovered many risk factors, including childhood abuse as the major public problem. Previous imaging studies have demonstrated that SI or childhood abuse has effects on brain structure and function, respectively, but the interaction effects between them have not been fully studied. To explore the interaction effect between SI and childhood abuse, 215 patients with major depressive disorder completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire to evaluate childhood abuse and Beck's Scale for Suicidal Ideation to evaluate SI. Then, they completed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within one week after completing questionnaires. Respectively, we preprocessed the structural and functional images and analyzed gray matter volumes (GMV) and mean fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (mfALFF) values. Results showed that the changes of GMV in the cuneus, precuneus, paracentric lobule, inferior frontal gyrus, and caudate nucleus and local activity in cuneal and middle temporal gyrus are in relation with SI and childhood abuse. And in left caudate, SI and childhood abuse interact with each other on the influence of GMV. That is, the influence of SI in GMV was related to childhood abuse, and the influence of childhood abuse in GMV was also related to SI. Therefore, the combination of SI and childhood abuse based on imaging should help us better understand the suicide ideation developing mechanism and propose more effective targeted prevention strategies for suicide prevention.

Abstract
Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with high risk of suicide, but the biological underpinnings of suicidality in MDD patients are far from conclusive. Previous neuroimaging studies using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) demonstrated that depressed individuals with suicidal thoughts or behaviors exhibit specific cortical structure alterations. To complement VBM findings, surface-based morphometry (SBM) can provide more details into gray matter structure, including the cortical complexity, cortical thickness and sulcal depth for brain images. Objective This study aims to use SBM to investigate cortical morphology alterations to obtain evidence for neuroanatomical alterations in depressed patients with suicidality. Methods Here, 3D T1-weighted MR images of brain from 39 healthy controls, 40 depressed patients without suicidality (patient controls), and 39 with suicidality (suicidal groups) were analyzed based on SBM to estimate the fractal dimension, gyrification index, sulcal depth, and cortical thickness using the Computational Anatomy Toolbox. Correlation analyses were performed between clinical data and cortical surface measurements from patients. Results Surface-based morphometry showed decreased sulcal depth in the parietal, frontal, limbic, occipital and temporal regions and decreased fractal dimension in the frontal regions in depressed patients with suicidality compared to both healthy and patient controls. Additionally, in patients with depression, the sulcal depth of the left caudal anterior cingulate cortex was negatively correlated with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores. Conclusions Depressed patients with suicidality had abnormal cortical morphology in some brain regions within the default mode network, frontolimbic circuitry and temporal regions. These structural deficits may be associated with the dysfunction of emotional processing and impulsivity control. This study provides insights into the underlying neurobiology of the suicidal brain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mood disorders are severe mental disorders related to increased suicidal behavior. Finding neural features for suicidal behavior, including suicide attempts (SAs) and suicidal ideation (SI), in mood disorders may be helpful in preventing suicidal behavior. METHODS Subjects consisted of 70 patients with mood disorders and suicidal behavior, 128 patients with mood disorders without suicidal behavior (mood disorders control, MC), and 145 health control (HC) individuals. All participants underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) techniques to examine gray matter volumes (GMVs). RESULTS Significant differences were found in GMVs of the left and right middle frontal gyrus among the patients with mood disorders and suicidal behavior, MC, and HC. Post hoc comparisons showed significant differences in the GMVs of the above regions across all three groups (P < 0.01): HC > MC > mood disorders with suicidal behavior. However, there were no significant differences in the GMVs of the left and right middle frontal gyrus between the mood disorders with SI and mood disorders with SAs groups. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide evidence that abnormal regional GMV in the middle frontal gyrus is associated with suicidal behavior in mood disorders. Further investigation is warranted to determine whether the GMV alterations in mood disorders with SI are different from these in mood disorders with SAs.

Abstract
Functional alterations in the subregions of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) have been observed in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Studies have shown that higher depressive symptoms are associated with altered functional connectivity (FC) in different ACC sub-regions. Suicide is highly prevalent in patients with MDD; however, it is unclear whether suicidal behavior is associated with the FC alterations in the subregions of the ACC in these indibiduals. Seventy-six patients with MDD (41 with and 35 without a history of suicidal behavior) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and were assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD), the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI), and the Columbia Scale for Rating of Suicide Severity. We investigated the FC between the ACC subregions and other brain regions in young MDD patients with and without a history of suicidal behavior. The FC in the subregions of the ACC-superior frontal gyrus differed significantly between the two groups. Additionally, the anterior sgACC-right caudate FC and the pgACC-left insula FC were found to be abnormal in the suicidal MDD group. Interestingly, the suicidal ideation score positively correlated with decreased FC in the pgACC-superior frontal gyrus in both groups, but it negatively correlated with increased FC in the anterior sgACC-superior frontal gyrus in the non-suicidal MDD group. Our findings indicate that altered connections of subregions in the ACC may be involved in the neurological mechanisms underlying suicide in young adults with MDD.

Abstract
Bipolar II disorder (BD-II) major depression episode is highly associated with suicidality, and objective neural biomarkers could be key elements to assist in early prevention and intervention. This study aimed to integrate altered brain functionality in the frontolimbic system and machine learning techniques to classify suicidal BD-II patients and predict suicidality risk at the individual level. A cohort of 169 participants were enrolled, including 43 BD-II depression patients with at least one suicide attempt during a current depressive episode (SA), 62 BD-II depression patients without a history of attempted suicide (NSA), and 64 demographically matched healthy controls (HCs). We compared resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in the frontolimbic system among the three groups and explored the correlation between abnormal rsFCs and the level of suicide risk (assessed using the Nurses' Global Assessment of Suicide Risk, NGASR) in SA patients. Then, we applied support vector machines (SVMs) to classify SA vs. NSA in BD-II patients and predicted the risk of suicidality. SA patients showed significantly decreased frontolimbic rsFCs compared to NSA patients. The left amygdala-right middle frontal gyrus (orbital part) rsFC was negatively correlated with NGASR in the SA group, but not the severity of depressive or anxiety symptoms. Using frontolimbic rsFCs as features, the SVMs obtained an overall 84% classification accuracy in distinguishing SA and NSA. A significant correlation was observed between the SVMs-predicted NGASR and clinical assessed NGASR (r = 0.51, p = 0.001). Our results demonstrated that decreased rsFCs in the frontolimbic system might be critical objective features of suicidality in BD-II patients, and could be useful for objective prediction of suicidality risk in individuals.

Abstract
Suicidal ideation (SUI) can occur in the absence of concomitant psychiatric diagnoses, and even normal levels can be problematic among individuals experiencing excess stress or lack of social support. The objective of this study was to investigate the neuroanatomical basis of SUI in non-clinical human populations who are within the normal limits of SUI, after accounting for elevated stress and perceived lack of social support. Neuroanatomical data were collected from 55 healthy individuals (mean age 30.9 ± 8.1 years, 27 females) whose depression severity levels were below the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria. Measures of SUI, aggression, stress, non-support, and treatment rejection were collected from the treatment-consideration scales (TCS) of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). Correlations between standardized SUI scores and three brain morphometry measures, including vertex wise cortical thickness (CT), cortical surface area (CSA), and cortical volume (CV), were estimated for each participant, controlling for age, sex, intracranial volume, and the remaining TCS measures. We observed a significant negative association between scores on SUI and both CSA and CV (cluster-forming threshold of p < 0.005, clusterwise threshold of p < 0.05, FDR corrected for multiple comparisons) within the left rostral middle frontal gyrus. Our findings suggest that greater CSA and CV within the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex are associated with reduced SUI in a non-clinical population with mild levels of stress and perceived lack of social support. Because the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex has been broadly linked to cognitive reappraisal, self-critical thoughts, and emotional regulation, greater CSA and CV within these regions may lead to better mental health by protecting healthy individuals from engaging in SUI during periods of stress and perceived insufficient social support. As our data consisted of only healthy individuals with non-clinical levels of SUI, further investigation will be necessary to explore the neural basis of SUI in populations who may be at greater risk of future suicidal behavior.
