Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a large gap of understanding the determinants of disability, especially the contextual characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the important predictors of disability in Chinese older adults based on the social ecological framework. METHODS We used the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study to examine predictors of disability, defined as self-report of any difficulty for six activity of daily living items. We restricted analytical sample to older adults aged 65 or above (N=1816). We considered 44 predictors, including personal-, behavioral-, interpersonal-, community-, and policy-level characteristics. The built-in variable importance measure (VIM) of random forest and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were applied to assess key predictors of disability. A multilevel logit regression was further used to examine the associations of individual and contextual characteristics with disability. RESULTS The mean age of study sample was 72.62 years old (standard deviation: 5.77). During a 2-year of follow-up, 518 (28.52 %) of them developed into disability. Walking speed, age, and peak expiratory flow were the top important predictors in both VIM and SHAP. Contextual characteristics such as humidity, PM2.5, temperature, normalized difference vegetation index, and landscape also showed promise in predicting disability. Multilevel logit regression showed that people with male gender, arthritis, vision impairment, unable to finish semi tandem, no social activity, lower grip strength, and higher waist circumference, had much higher risk of disability. CONCLUSION Disability prevention strategies should specifically focus on multilevel factors such as individual and contextual characteristics, although the latter is warranted to be verified in future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study aimed to assess the relationship between lifestyle factors and incident functional disability in South Africa. METHODS Longitudinal data (N = 4113) from two consecutive waves in 2014/2015 and 2018/2019 in Agincourt, South Africa, were analysed. RESULTS Moderate sedentary behaviour (AOR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.31-2.58) and being overweight (AOR: 1.61, 95% CI: 1.10-2.36) increased the odds of incident functional disability among men. Moderate and high sedentary behaviour (AOR: 1.83, 95% CI: 1.31, 2.57, and AOR: 1.83, 95% CI: 1.08-3.10) increased the odds, and frequent fruit intake (AOR: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.19-0.91) and moderate physical activity (AOR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.30-0.75) decreased the odds of incident functional disability among women. CONCLUSIONS Sedentary behaviour and being overweight increased odds, and physical activity and frequent fruit intake decreased odds of incident functional disability among ageing men and/or women in South Africa.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to assess the trends in disabilities in activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) among older Chinese adults and explore the influence of multimorbidity and unhealthy behaviors on ADL/IADL disability over time. METHODS Data were obtained from four waves (2011-2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Disability in ADL/IADL was defined as inability to perform any ADL/IADL task. Latent class analysis was used to identify multimorbidity patterns. The generalized estimating equation was used to test disability trends. Logistic regression was used to investigate the factors influencing disability. RESULTS The prevalence of IADL and ADL disability showed significant increasing trends among older Chinese adults from 2011 to 2018 (ptrend < 0.001). The negative association between alcohol intake more than once per month and IADL disability strengthened over time (ptrend < 0.05). The influence of the "arthritis/digestive diseases" pattern, "cardiometabolic disease" pattern and "high multimorbidity" pattern on ADL disability weakened over time (ptrend < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of IADL and ADL disability among Chinese older adults increased over time. The "arthritis/digestive diseases" pattern, "cardiometabolic disease" pattern and "high multimorbidity" pattern appeared to be less disabling in ADL over time. Improving the prevention and treatment of multimorbidity and developing age-friendly living conditions could be helpful to reduce the risks of disability.

Abstract
We examined the association of modifiable cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics with physical function among rural older adults in China and the potential role of inflammatory mechanisms in the association. This study included 3733 stroke- and dementia-free participants (age ≥65 years; 56.9% women) in the baseline survey of a multimodal intervention study in rural China. From March-September 2018, data were collected via face-to-face interviews, clinical assessments, and laboratory tests. The Short Performance Physical Battery (SPPB) test was performed to assess physical function. We defined six modifiable CVH metrics according to the modified American Heart Association's recommendations. Serum interleukin (IL)-6 was measured in a subsample (n = 1156). Data were analyzed with multiple general linear and logistic regression models and structural equation modeling. Poor physical function (SPPB score ≤9) was defined in 1443 participants. Ideal CVH (vs. poor CVH) was associated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of 0.60 (95%CI 0.48-0.75) for poor physical function. Ideal CVH was significantly associated with higher scores on balance, chair stand, and walking speed tests (all p < 0.05). Moreover, ideal CVH profile was associated with lower serum IL-6 (multivariable-adjusted β=-0.04; 95% CI -0.06, -0.01). Mediation analysis revealed that serum IL-6 accounted for 14% of the association of CVH with total SPPB score and 10% of the association with walking speed score (p < 0.05). This study suggests that an ideal CVH profile is associated with better physical function among stroke- and dementia-free older adults, partly via inflammatory mechanisms. The preventive implications of these findings warrant further investigation in cohort studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to identify the unique multimorbidity combinations (MMCs) and their associations with the functional disability of Indian older adults. Moreover, the population attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated to assess the potential impact of additional diseases in the nested groups on disability. DESIGN A cross-sectional data were analysed in this study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS The present study uses data from the first wave of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (2017-2018). The sample for the study consists of 27 753 aged 60 years and over. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcome variable was functional disability, measured by the combined activities of daily living (ADL)-instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) index. RESULTS Out of 197 uniquely identified MMCs, the combination of hypertension and high depressive symptoms (HDS) was the most prevalent (10.3%). Overall, all MMCs were associated with increased functional limitation. Specifically, the combination of hypertension, arthritis and HDS was associated with greater ADL-IADL disability than any other MMC. The addition of HDS in group 3 (hypertension and arthritis) (incidence rate ratios (IRR)=1.44; 95% CI 1.26 to 1.64) and the addition of arthritis in group 1 (hypertension, HDS) (IRR=1.48; 95% CI 1.28 to 1.71) and group 2 (hypertension, diabetes) (IRR=1.49; 95% CI 1.22 to 1.82) significantly increases the rates of ADL-IADL disability. The estimated PAFs of the group 1 (hypertension and HDS), group 3 (hypertension and arthritis) and group 4 (arthritis and HDS) for ADL-IADL disability were 22.5% (19.2-25.5), 21.6% (18.7-24.4) and 23.5% (20.6-26.3), respectively. CONCLUSION The findings from this study underscore the importance of addressing the morbidity combinations which are more disabling than the others in older adults. Understanding the somatic and psychological relevance of the morbidities in functional health is necessary and can help reduce disabilities among older adults.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze (a) population and socioeconomic factors affecting disability, excluding the occurrence of disability due to accidents and congenital diseases, and (b) health-related behavioral factors and factors that can prevent and reduce the cause of disability due to disease in Korea. This study was a longitudinal research. Data were obtained from The 2018 Korean Health Panel (KHP) is a survey jointly conducted by the Korea Institute of Health and Social Affairs and the National Health Insurance Service. A total of 7, 372 (Mage = 52.14, SD = 21.39; Male = 47.52%) were analyzed in this study. People with Higher education attainments and more income levels were associated with lower hazard of developing new disabilities (all p < 0.05). In this study, the health factors that could be related to the occurrence of new disabilities were smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and stress (all p < 0.0001). However, physical activity was negatively associated with the risk of developing a disability at all follow-ups (p < 0.05). Higher scores on the number of chronic diseases (valid scores = 0, 1, 2, 3, or more) represented a greater level of newly developing disability present at all follow-ups (all p < 0.0001). This longitudinal study confirmed the relationship between health-related factors and specific chronic diseases. Its findings can be used as a crucial foundation for establishing healthcare policies and services that can lower and prevent disability by preventing and reducing specific negative health behaviors and unhealthy behavioral factors, and alleviating chronic diseases in Korea.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this study was to assess the bidirectional association between multimorbidity (MM) and functional disability among middle-aged and older adults in a longitudinal study in Thailand. Methods We analyzed longitudinal data of participants aged 45 years and older from two consecutive waves (in 2015 and 2017) of the Health, Aging, and Retirement in Thailand (HART). Functional disability was assessed with a 4-item activity of daily living (ADL) scale. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the association between baseline functional disability and incident MM (≥2), and baseline morbidity and incident functional disability. Results The results indicate that a total of 1,716 individuals without morbidity at baseline and 3,529 without functional disability at baseline were included. At follow-up, 16.7 and 20.0% of functional disability cases and 7.1 and 3.6% of nonfunctional disability cases developed 2 morbidities and 3 or more morbidities, respectively, and 6.6% of MM cases and 4.0% of non-MM cases developed a functional disability. In the final logistic regression model adjusted for education, income, age, marital status, sex, smoking tobacco, body mass index (BMI), alcohol use, physical activity, and social engagement, functional disability at baseline was positively associated with incident MM (≥2) (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.58, 95% CI: 1.42-4.72), and MM (≥3) at baseline was positively associated with incident functional disability (aOR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.13-3.43). Conclusion Multimorbidity and functional disability were bidirectionally associated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maintaining independence in older age is an important aspect of quality of life. We investigated depressive symptoms as an important modifiable risk factor that may mediate the effects of physical and cognitive decline on disability. METHODS We prospectively analyzed data from 223 adults (age 50-85; 117 controls and 106 with type-2 diabetes) over 48 weeks who were participating in a clinical trial "Memory Advancement by Intranasal Insulin in Type 2 Diabetes." Data from self-reported disability (World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule) and depressive symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale) were obtained from baseline, week 25, and week 48 visits. Cognition (Mini-mental status examination) and medical comorbidities (Charlson Comorbidity Index) were assessed at baseline. Longitudinal analysis assessed the extent to which change in depressive symptoms predicted worsening disability. Mediation analyses were performed to determine the extent to which depressive symptoms accounted for disability associated with worse cognition, walking speed, and comorbidities. RESULTS At baseline, depressive symptoms, cognition, and walking speed were within normal limits, but participants had a high 10-year risk of cardiovascular mortality. Depressive symptoms were related to disability at baseline (p<0.001), and longitudinally (p<0.001). Cognition, walking speed, and comorbidities were associated with disability at baseline (p-values = 0.027-0.001). Depressive symptoms had a large mediating effect on disability longitudinally: the indirect effect on disability via depression accounts for 51% of the effect of cognition, 34% of the effect of mobility, and 24% of the effect of comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS Depressive symptoms substantially exacerbated the effects of worsening cognition, gait speed, and comorbidities on disability. In our sample, most individuals scored within the "normal" range of the Geriatric Depression Scale, suggesting that even subclinical symptoms can lead to disability. Treating subclinical depression, which may be under-recognized in older adults, should be a public health priority to help preserve independence with aging.

Abstract
Background Though motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) share risk factors with disability, whether it predict disability remains understudied. Objectives This study aims to examine the association between MCR and incident disability. Design Longitudinal study. Methods MCR was defined as subjective cognitive complaints and objective slow gait speed. Two subtypes of MCR were defined by whether memory impairment (MI) was also present, MCR-MI and MCR-non-MI. Incident activities of daily living (ADL) disability and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability were outcome measures. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independent effect of MCR at baseline on the odds of ADL/IADL disability at a 7 year follow-up. Results Among the subjects who were not disabled at baseline and followed for 7 years, 34.66% reported incident ADL disability, and 31.64% reported incident IADL disability. Compared with participants without MCR at baseline, those with MCR had 58% increased odds of incident ADL disability (OR=1.58, 95% CI: 1.19–2.09) and 46% increased odds of incident IADL disability (OR=1.46, 95% CI: 1.13–1.88) after 7 years. MCR-non-MI was associated with a 56.63% increased risk of ADL disability and a 34.73% increased risk of IADL disability. MCR-MI was associated with an even higher risk of IADL disability (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.18–3.88). Conclusions MCR is an independent risk factor for both incident ADL and IADL disability. MCR-MI predicts a higher risk for disability than MCR-non-MI. Early identification of MCR among older adult is recommended and may decrease future risk of disability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES To clarify whether the presence or absence of fast walking and habitual physical activity are independently associated with the incidence of functional disability. METHODS This historical cohort study was comprised of 9,652 (4,412 men, mean age 65 years) individuals aged 39-98 years without functional disability at baseline. Functional disability was determined based on the Japanese long-term care insurance system, which specified requirements for assistance in the activities of daily living. The impact of fast walking and habitual physical activity on the incidence of functional disability was analysed by Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS The follow-up period was a median of 3.7 years during which 165 patients were newly certified as having functional disability. In the multivariate analysis, baseline age in 5-year increments (hazard ratio 2.42 [95% confidence interval 2.18-2.69]), no habitual physical activity (1.56 [1.07-2.27]), and not fast walking (1.89 [1.32-2.69]) significantly increased the risk of functional disability after adjustment for covariates. The stratified analysis showed that compared with physical activity (+), the impact of physical activity (-) on the incidence of functional disability was observed in those aged ≥75 years regardless of fast walking (+). Fast walking (-) significantly increased the risk of disability compared with fast walking (+) in those aged <75 years regardless of a physical activity habit. CONCLUSION In Japanese, slow walking speed and lack of a physical activity habit were shown to be independent risk factors for incident functional disability, with their impact differing according to age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current evidence on the association between Mediterranean diet (MeDi) intake and activities of daily living (ADL) is limited and inconsistent in older adults. METHODS This study included 1 696 participants aged ≥65 years in the Washington Heights-Inwood Community Aging Project study. The MeDi score was calculated based on data collected from the Willett's semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The multivariable-adjusted Cox regression model was applied to examine the association of MeDi score with risks of disability in basic (BADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL), as well as the overall ADL (B-IADL). RESULTS Eight hundred and thirty-two participants with incident ADL disability were identified over a median follow-up of 5.39 years. The continuous MeDi score was significantly associated with decreased risk of disability in B-IADL (hazard ratio = 0.95, 95% confidence interval = 0.91-0.99, p = .018) in a model adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, educational level, and dietary calories intake but was no longer significant after additionally adjusted for multiple comorbidities and physical activities (0.97 [0.93, 1.01], p = .121). The continuous MeDi score was significantly associated with decreased risk of disability in B-IADL (0.92 [0.85, 1.00], p = .043) and BADL (0.90 [0.82, 0.99], p = .030) in non-Hispanic Whites, but not in non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics (p > .05 for all). CONCLUSIONS Higher MeDi score was associated with decreased risk of ADL disability, particularly in non-Hispanic Whites.

Abstract
Motor fitness and flexibility have been linked to several health issues. We aimed to investigate the predictive validity of motor fitness and flexibility tests in relation to health outcomes in adults and older adults. Web of Science and PubMed databases were screened for studies published from inception to November 2020. Two authors systematically searched, evaluated, and extracted data from identified original studies and systematic reviews/meta-analysis. Three levels of evidence were constructed: strong, moderate, and limited/inconclusive evidence. In total, 1182 studies were identified, and 70 studies and 6 systematic reviews/meta-analysis were summarized. Strong evidence indicated that (i) slower gait speed predicts falls and institutionalization/hospitalization in adults over 60 years old, cognitive decline/impairment over 55 years old, mobility disability over 50 years old, disability in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) over 54 years old, cardiovascular disease risk over 45 years old, and all-cause mortality over 35 years old; (ii) impaired balance predicts falls and disability in IADL/mobility disability in adults over 40 years old and all-cause mortality over 53 years old; (iii) worse timed up&go test (TUG) predicts falls and fear of falling over 40 years old. Evidence supports that slower gait speed, impaired balance, and worse TUG performance are significantly associated with an increased risk of adverse health outcomes in adults.

Abstract
[Purpose] The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused sudden lifestyle
changes. This study aimed to determine the limitations in activity and the influences of
remote exercise training on community-dwelling older adults during a state of emergency in
Japan. [Participants and Methods] In May 2020, during the COVID-19 state of emergency, we
carried out a mail survey of community-dwelling older adults who had previously
participated in a disability prevention program in Ami town, Ibaraki, Japan. The mail
included a brochure on exercises and a DVD. The attached exercise program was comprised of
10 different exercises, which could be conducted in approximately 30 minutes. [Results] Of
the 191 older adults, 73 responded to this survey (38.2%), of which 42 (58.5%)
participants had decreased outdoor exercise activity, and 50 (68.5%) decreased the amount
of time spent on physical activities during the COVID-19 state of emergency. There were
significant reductions (19.2–22.5%) in the perceived exercise load for each posture after
two weeks of remote exercise training with DVD (n=26). [Conclusion] Our results suggested
that the remote exercise training with the brochure and DVD may be effective. Since this
study involved a small number of participants, future studies should involve larger
populations.

Abstract
Background: Spinal cord injuries (SCI) are a variety of chronic diseases that various causes such as trauma may contribute to its onset. One of the problems in these patients is the problem of physical activity and, consequently, daily activities. Objectives: This study aimed to assess daily living of patients with SCI. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study in 2019, 120 patients with SCI in Kermanshah were included in the study using purposive sampling. The instruments used in this study fell into two parts. One part included the demographic characteristics of the SCI patients, and the other part was a questionnaire of the rate of the Impact on Participation and Autonomy questionnaire (IPA-P). Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 16 using descriptive tests such as mean and standard deviation. Results: The result showed there was a significant relationship between demographic characteristics such as education (P < 0.007), time of spinal cord injury (P < 0.01), and income (P = 0.000). Also, the results showed there was a relationship between Autonomy and Participation, and the age of patients and their autonomy and participation decreased with age (P = 0.000, R = 0.72). Most of the patients had severe problems with daily activities. Also, most patients had very poor scores in relation to daily living activities. Conclusions: Considering the low rate of participation and autonomy in patients with SCI, it is suggested to conduct studies aimed at improving their self-care and social participation.

Abstract
Background: Lower serum lipid metabolism might be associated with the decline of activity of daily living in the extreme longevity group. However, studies on models and possible paths of this correlation between total cholesterol (TC) and disability in centenarians are scarce. The aim of this study was to verify this correlation and explore the mediating effect of BMI and blood pressure on this relationship in Hainan centenarians. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1002 centenarians from the China Hainan Centenarians Cohort Study (CHCCS). Data on demographics, anthropometry data, lifestyle, and TC levels were collected through interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests. The Barthel index and Lawton index, measuring the disability status, were used to estimate the activity of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activity of daily living (IADL). A multivariable logistic regression model was used to explore the correlation between disability and TC levels. Mediation analyses were used to explore the both direct and indirect effects of TC level on disability. Results: After adjusting for covariates, with 1 mmol/L increment in TC, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of ADL severe disability and ADL moderate & severe disability were 0.789(95%CI: 0.650-0.959) and 0.822(95%CI: 0. 0.699-0.966), respectively. There was a significant declining trend in the prevalence of different types of disability with increment in TC. The correlation was more pronounced among Hainan female centenarians. In the analysis of mediating effect among the female population, BMI significantly mediated the effect of TC levels on different types of disability. BMI and SBP, as chain mediators, multiply and chain mediated the effect of TC levels on IADL. Conclusion: Low TC levels might be correlated with a higher frequency of disability in female centenarians, and this correlation might be mediated by BMI and blood pressure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify the heterogeneous disability trajectories among older Chinese adults and examine the association between disability trajectories and health care service utilization. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A community-based study including older adults aged ≥65 years from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. METHODS Disability was assessed by the difficulties in activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living between 2002 and 2018. Health care utilization was measured by the expenditures on outpatient and inpatient services in 2018. Growth mixture modeling was conducted to estimate heterogeneous disability trajectories. A 2-part model was used to analyze the association of disability trajectories and health care utilization. Covariates were included based on Andersen's behavioral model. RESULTS Three classes of disability trajectories were identified: the progressive (7.9%), late-onset (13.7%), and normal classes (78.4%). Older adults who followed the late-onset trajectory of disability were more likely to use inpatient services compared with the normal class (odds ratio = 1.47, P < .010), after controlling potential confounders. Compared with the normal class, the progressive class on average spent US$145.94 more annually (45.2% higher) on outpatient services (P < .010) and $738.99 more annually (72.6% higher) on inpatient services (P < .001); the late-onset class reported higher annual expenditures on outpatient and inpatient services of $215.94 (66.9% higher) and $1405.00 (138.0% higher), respectively (all P < .001). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Heterogeneous disability trajectories exhibited distinct health care service utilization patterns among older Chinese adults. Older adults affected by late-onset disability incurred the highest health care needs. These findings provide valuable policy-relevant evidence for reducing health care burden among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence of the trend of the incidence of activities of daily living (ADL) disability among Chinese older people is limited. We aimed to investigate the time trends and potential risk factors for the incidence of ADL disability among Chinese older people (≥65 years). METHODS We established two consecutive and nonoverlapping cohorts (6,857 participants in the 2002 cohort and 5,589 participants in the 2008 cohort) from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. ADL disability was defined as the need for assistance with at least one essential activity (dressing, bathing, toileting, eating, indoor activities, and continence). Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify factors associated with the trend in the incidence of ADL disability from 2002 to 2014. RESULTS The incidence (per 1,000 person-years) of ADL disability decreased significantly from 64.2 in the 2002 cohort to 46.6 in the 2008 cohort (p < .001), and decreasing trends in the incidence of ADL disability were observed for all sex, age, and residence subgroups (all p < .001), even after adjusting for multiple potential confounding factors. Moreover, we found that adjustment for sociodemographic, lifestyle information, and cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke) explained less of the decline in ADL disability during the period from 2002 to 2014. CONCLUSION The incidence of ADL disability among the older adults in China appears to have decreased during the study period, and this finding cannot be explained by existing sociodemographic and lifestyle information and cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To correlate anthropometric measurements, lipid profile, cardiorespiratory fitness, and visceral adiposity index (VAI) in sedentary obese older women. METHODS: Twenty-seven insufficiently active and overweight older women were included in this cross-sectional study. We evaluated their anthropometric profile (body weight and stature, body mass index, waist and hip circumferences) and body composition (fat mass, body fat percentage, and musculoskeletal mass). Venous blood samples were analyzed for high and low-density lipoproteins (HDL-c and LDL-c), triglycerides (TG), and the LDL/HDL ratio. Peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) was measured using an adapted Bruce test using direct spirometry. We tested data normality and applied Pearson’s correlation, assuming a p ≤ 0.05. RESULS: The following correlations were observed: VAI and HDL (r = -0.53); VAI and LDL (r = 0.35); VAI and TG (r = 0.86); VAI and TG/HDL (r = 0.99) and VAI and VO2 peak (r = -0.55), with p < 0.01 for all analyses. CONCLUSION: The findings suggested that VAI may be used as a tool to assess cardiometabolic risk in obese older women. Future studies should evaluate the applicability of VAI as a cardiometabolic risk factor indicator in older adults.

Abstract
Urban green spaces (UGS) have been linked with a series of benefits for the environment, and for the physical health and well-being of urban residents. This is of great importance in the context of the aging of modern societies. However, UGS have different forms and characteristics that can determine their utilization. Common elements in UGS such as the type of vegetation and the type of surface are surprisingly understudied in regard to their relationship with the type of activity undertaken in UGS. This paper aims to explore the relationship between landscape diversity and the type of surface with the time spent and the physical activity intensity performed by seniors. To do so, this study uses GPS tracking data in combination with accelerometer data gathered from 63 seniors residing in Barcelona, Spain. Results showed that senior participants spent little time inside the analyzed UGS and sedentary behaviors (SBs) were more common than physical activities (PAs). The presence of pavement surfaces positively influenced the total time spent in UGS while gravel surfaces were negatively associated with time spent in active behaviors. The provision of well-defined and maintained paved areas and paths are some key infrastructures to be considered when designing UGS for overall urban residents and, especially, when aiming to potentiate the access for senior visitors.

Abstract
Objective: Older adults present higher risk of functional disability detected by handgrip strength and an increased risk of poor health conditions, such as dehydration and low values of the sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio. This study aimed to quantify the association of hydration status and Na/K ratio with handgrip strength, based on the urinary excretion of older adults.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 735 older adults ≥ 65 years old. Handgrip strength was measured with a Jamar Dynamometer and low values were defined according to body mass index and to sex-specific cutoff points. The hydration status was evaluated based on free water reserve. Sodium and potassium intake were evaluated after converting 24-hour urinary sodium and potassium excretion, respectively. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the probability of presenting low handgrip strength, according to risk of hypohydration and to quartiles of Na/K, stratified by sex and adjusted for potential confounders.Results: The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for presenting low handgrip strength was higher in women at risk of hypohydration, but this association was not found in men. Both women and men with the highest values of Na/K ratio presented higher adjusted OR for low handgrip strength (OR in women was 2.03; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12-3.68, and in men was 2.19; 95% CI: 1.11-4.29).Conclusions: The risk of hypohydration was directly associated with low handgrip strength in older women. In older adults, higher values of urinary Na/K ratio were also directly associated with low handgrip strength.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the strength of the association between objectively and subjectively measured physical activity (PA) and cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) in a sample of older adults to assess which measure of PA is most appropriate for use in this population. STUDY DESIGN AND OUTCOME MEASURES The study was a cross-sectional analysis of a community-dwelling sample aged 60 years or more (61 women and 34 men). Data collection included anthropometric measurements, blood analytics, and objective and subjective measurements of PA from accelerometers and Yale PA Survey questionnaires, respectively. RESULTS Although the questionnaire indicated a higher summary index (total units) of PA in men than in women, objective measurements of total PA (mean counts per minute and steps per day) did not differ by sex. However, we obtained different results between women and men when we analyzed the relation between objective and subjective PA parameters and CVRF. In women, parameters that indicate cardiovascular risk, such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), glucose, and total cholesterol, negatively correlated with objective PA parameters, while HDLc positively correlated with objective PA parameters and negatively with subjective PA parameters. In men, BMI and WC were negatively correlated with objective PA parameters, while blood cholesterol, LDLc, and triglycerides negatively correlated with subjective PA parameters. CONCLUSIONS In women, it seems more appropriate to use objective methods to measure PA, while in men, objective and subjective methods seem to be complementary. Both methods of measurement, accelerometers and questionnaires, should be used simultaneously in research studies in older populations to establish precise relationships between PA and cardiovascular risk.
