Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association of an elevated level of uric acid (UA) in the bloodstream with an increased likelihood of acute kidney injury (AKI) following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study using a multivariate logistic regression model. SETTING Single institution. PARTICIPANTS Recipients of CABG surgery. INTERVENTION None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS A total of 761 individuals who underwent CABG were included in the study. The participants were categorized into 4 groups based on their UA level: Q1 group (UA <292.5 μmol/L), Q2 group (292.5 ≤ UA <353 μmol/L), Q3 group (353 ≤ UA < 423 μmol/L), and Q4 group (UA ≥423 μmol/L). A total of 167 patients, accounting for 21.9% of the sample, experienced postoperative AKI. The study found a significantly higher risk of AKI in the Q4 group compared to the Q1 group (40.4% v 8.9%; p < 0.001). After adjustment for confounding variables, an independent association between serum UA concentration and an elevated risk of AKI post-CABG was identified (odds ratio, 6.41; 95% confidence interval, 3.49-12.32; p < 0.001; p for trend < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS There is a relationship between preoperative blood UA level and the occurrence of AKI following CABG surgery.

Abstract
Introduction Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains a critical disease, characterized by a high fatality rate in several countries. In clinical practice, the incidence of AMI is increased in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the early diagnosis of AMI in the above group of patients is still poor. Methods In the present study, a total of 829 patients with CKD, defined by an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of <60 ml/min/1.73 m2 or 60-90 ml/min/1.73 m2 for patients with mildly reduced kidney function, who attended the Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital (SPPH) between January 2018 and November 2022 were enrolled. All patients underwent coronary angiography due to the presence of typical or atypical symptoms of AMI. Patients were divided into the following two groups: The training cohort, including 255 participants with AMI and 242 without AMI; and the testing cohort, including 165 and 167 subjects with and without AMI, respectively. Furthermore, a forward stepwise regression model and a multivariable logistic regression model, named SPPH-AMI-model, were constructed to select significant predictors and assist the diagnosis of AMI in patients with CKD, respectively. Results The following factors were evaluated in the model: Smoking status, high sensitivity cardiac troponin I, serum creatinine and uric acid levels, history of percutaneous coronary intervention and electrocardiogram. Additionally, the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve were determined in the risk model in the training set [AUC, 0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.74-0.82] vs. the testing set (AUC, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.69-0.79) vs. the combined set (AUC, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.73-0.80). Finally, the sensitivity and specificity rates were 71.12 and 71.21%, respectively, the percentage of cases correctly classified was 71.14%, while positive and negative predictive values of 71.63 and 70.70%, respectively, were also recorded. Discussion The results of the current study suggested that the SPPH-AMI-model could be currently considered as the only risk scoring system for the early diagnosis of AMI in patients with CKD. This method could help clinicians and emergency physicians to quickly and accurately diagnose AMI in patients with CKD to promote the immediate and effective treatment of these patients.

Abstract
Aim To clarify the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) and glycosylated hemoglobin (UA/HbA1c) ratio and all-cause mortality in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Methods A total of 172 inpatients with DFUs (PEDIS grades 2-4) were eligible for inclusion in this study from 2018 to 2023. This was a retrospective, longitudinal cohort study. All subjects were followed up every 6 months for a median of 60 months. According to the cutoff value of the UA/HbA1c ratio of 39.07 obtained from ROC analysis, the participants were divided into two groups: low-level (≤ 39.07, n = 107) and high-level (> 39.07, n = 65) groups. The correlation between UA/HbA1c ratio and all-cause mortality was also evaluated by Cox regression analysis TheKaplan-Meier survival curve analysis and Log rank tests were used to assess the incidence rates of all-cause mortality. The contribution rate of risk factors was estimated by the population-attributable risk percentage (PAR%) analysis. Results ROC analysis showed that the optimal cutoff values for UA and the UA/HbA1c ratio were 372 μmol/L and 39.07, respectively. Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that a high UA/HbA1c ratio (HR =4.63; 95% CI = 2.004-10.7, P < 0.001) was independently associated with a high risk of all-cause mortality in patients with DFUs. Stratified analysis indicated that subjects aged ≥ 60 years had a greater risk of all-cause mortality associated with a high UA/HbA1c ratio (HR = 4.450; 95% CI = 1.711-11.574, P = 0.002). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that all-cause mortality had a significant positive association with a high UA/HbA1c ratio (log-rank, P < 0.001) and a significant negative correlation with the lowered HbA1c level (< 6.5%) after a follow-up of 32 months (log-rank, P < 0.001). The population attributable risk percentage (PAR%) analysis suggested that the contribution rate of the high-level UA/HbA1c ratio to all-cause mortality was 33.7%, which was much greater than the 19.69% of UA. Conclusion In brief, our study showed that for every 1.0% increase in the UA/HbA1c ratio, the all-cause mortality rate in elderly patients with DFUs aged ≥ 60 years increased by 3.45-fold. For elderly patients with DFUs, a safe and effective strategy to reduce all-cause mortality is to strictly control serum UA levels to < 372 μmol/L and appropriately loosen the control goal of HbA1c to ≥ 6.5%.

Abstract
AIM Previous studies have implicated the uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (UHR) was associated with type 2 diabetes. However, the association between UHR and diabetes-related vascular damages is still unclear. METHODS The total of 4551 patients with type 2 diabetes from the cross-sectional Environmental Pollutant Exposure and Metabolic Diseases in Shanghai study (METAL study) were enrolled. UHR was calculated as uric acid to HDL-C ratio. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) was defined as previously diagnosed with stroke, coronary heart disease, or peripheral arterial disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate ≤60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and/or urinary albumin to creatinine ratio ≥30 mg/g. Fundus image was examined by trained individuals and degree of diabetic retinopathy (DR) was evaluated. RESULTS UHR was positively correlated with CVD (OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.02-1.61) and CKD (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.39-2.27) after adjusting for all confounders. No association was found between UHR and DR. In stratified analyses, UHR was predominantly correlated with CVD in diabetic patients with age older than 65 (OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.08-1.85), female (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.06-1.94) and BMI≥24kg/m2 (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.17-2.11). A 1-SD increment of UHR was also positively associated with CVD (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.03, 1.15) and CKD (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.20,1.39). UHR was positively associated with CKD in all subgroups analysis. No significant interaction effect was observed between UHR and all subgroup variables in CVD and CKD risk. CONCLUSION Our study reported a positive association between the UHR and diabetic-related vascular complications in men and postmenopausal women. The relationship between the UHR and DR seems to be uncertain and requires further investigation. And no significant interaction effect was observed between the UHR and all subgroup variables in CVD and CKD risk.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been continuously increasing, and this trend is projected to continue. CVD is rapidly becoming a significant public health issue. Every year there is a spike in hospital cases of CVD, a critical health concern in lower- and middle-income countries. Based on identification of novel biomarkers, it would be necessary to study and evaluate the diagnostic requirements or CVD to expedite early detection. Main body The literature review was written using a wide range of sources, such as well-known medical journals, electronic databases, manuscripts, texts, and other writings from the university library. After that, we analysed the specific markers of CVD and compiled a systematic review. A growing body of clinical research aims to identify people who are at risk for cardiovascular disease by looking for biomolecules. A small number of biomarkers have been shown to be useful and reliable in medicine. Biomarkers can be used for a variety of clinical applications, such as predicting heart disease risk, diagnosing disease, or predicting outcomes. As a result of the ability for a single molecule to act as a biomarker, its usefulness in medicine is expected to increase significantly. Conclusions Based on assessing the current trends in the application of CVD markers, we discussed and described the requirements for the application of CVD biomarkers in coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease, and other cardiovascular illnesses. Furthermore, the current review focuses on biomarkers for CVD and the procedures that should be considered to establish the comprehensive nature of the expression of biomarkers for cardiovascular illness.

Abstract
Background Previous studies showed variable estimate of the prevalence of hyperuricemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The prevalence of hyperuricemia and associated risk factors in Jordanian patients with T2DM is largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of hyperuricemia and its associated factors in Jordanian patients with T2DM. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 655 patients with T2DM. A structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data. In addition, records of the study subjects were reviewed to obtain other clinical data. Weight, height, and waist circumference were measured, and body mass index was calculated. Lipid profile, serum uric acid and glycated haemoglobin were analysed. The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. An informed written consent was obtained from each participant. The confidentiality of the information was assured and only used for scientific purposes. Results Overall, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was 28.1%. Female gender (OR: 2.37; 95%, CI: 1.63–3.45), intake of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs) (OR: 1.68; 95%, CI: 1.12–2.50), intake of β-blockers (OR: 2.20; 95%, CI: 1.51–3.22), increased waist circumference (OR: 3.17; 95%, CI: 1.39–7.22) and family history of hyperuricemia (OR: 2.56; 95%, CI: 1.57–4.16) were associated with increased odds of hyperuricemia. Conclusion Hyperuricemia was high among type 2 diabetic patients, and screening test will be useful for those patients.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. Cancer survivors have significantly elevated risk of poor cardiovascular (CV) health outcomes due to close co-morbid linkages and shared risk factors between CVD and cancer, as well as adverse effects of cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity. CVD and cancer-related outcomes are exacerbated by increased risk of inflammation. Results from different pharmacological interventions aimed at reducing inflammation and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) have been largely mixed to date. Greenspaces have been shown to reduce inflammation and have been associated with CV health benefits, including reduced CVD behavioral risk factors and overall improvement in CV outcomes. Greenspace may, thus, serve to alleviate the CVD burden among cancer survivors. To understand pathways through which greenspace can prevent or reduce adverse CV outcomes among cancer survivors, we review the state of knowledge on associations among inflammation, CVD, cancer, and existing pharmacological interventions. We then discuss greenspace benefits for CV health from ecological to multilevel studies and a few existing experimental studies. Furthermore, we review the relationship between greenspace and inflammation, and we highlight forest bathing in Asian-based studies while presenting existing research gaps in the US literature. Then, we use the socioecological model of health to present an expanded conceptual framework to help fill this US literature gap. Lastly, we present a way forward, including implications for translational science and a brief discussion on necessities for virtual nature and/or exposure to nature images due to the increasing human-nature disconnect; we also offer guidance for greenspace research in cardio-oncology to improve CV health outcomes among cancer survivors.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of global mortality and their pathogenesis lies mainly in the atherosclerotic process. There are close connections linking oxidative stress and inflammation to endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and, consequently, to CVD. This review focuses on the role of xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) and its products on the development of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, responsible for atheromatous plaque formation. Evidence is reported that an excessive level of XOR products favors inflammatory response and plaque development, thereby promoting major cardiovascular risk factors. Also, the relationship between hyperuricemia and hypertension as well as between XOR activity and CVD is confirmed. In spite of the increasing number of clinical studies investigating the output of cardiovascular patients treated with urate-lowering therapies (including uricosuric drugs, XOR inhibitors and recombinant uricase) the results are still uncertain. The inhibition of XOR activity appears more promising than just the control of uricemia level in preventing cardiovascular events, possibly because it also reduces the intracellular accumulation of urate, as well as the production of reactive oxygen species. However, XOR inhibition also reduces the availability of the multifaced mediator nitric oxide and, at present, can be recommended only in hyperuricemic patients.

Abstract
Uric acid crystal is known to activate the NLRP3 inflammasome and to cause tissue damages, which can result in many diseases, such as gout, chronic renal injury and myocardial damage. Meanwhile, soluble uric acid (sUA), before forming crystals, is also related to these diseases. This study was carried out to investigate whether sUA could also activate NLRP3 inflammasome in cardiomyocytes and to analyse the mechanisms. The cardiomyocyte activity was monitored, along with the levels of mature IL-1β and caspase-1 from H9c2 cells following sUA stimulus. We found that sUA was able to activate NLRP3 inflammasome, which was responsible for H9c2 cell apoptosis induced by sUA. By elevating TLR6 levels and then activating NF-κB/p65 signal pathway, sUA promoted NLRP3, pro-caspase 1 and pro-IL-1β production and provided the first signal of NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Meanwhile, ROS production regulated by UCP2 levels also contributed to NLRP3 inflammasome assembly and subsequent caspase 1 activation and mature IL-1β secretion. In addition, the tlr6 knockdown rats suffering from hyperuricemia showed the lower level of IL-1β and an ameliorative cardiac function. These findings suggest that sUA activates NLRP3 inflammasome in cardiomyocytes and they may provide one therapeutic strategy for myocardial damage induced by sUA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Uric acid, the end-product of human purine metabolism, is associated with hypertension, diabetes and obesity. It has also been independently associated with the onset of chronic kidney disease in several populations. In this study, the association between serum uric acid (SUA) level and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was investigated in healthy individuals belonging to two Brazilian birth cohorts. METHODS AND RESULTS Data from 3541 to 3482 individuals, aged 30 and 22-years old, respectively, was included. eGFR was calculated using Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation based on creatinine measurement. Regression analyses were sex-stratified due to interaction between SUA and sex (p < 0.001) and adjusted for perinatal, cardiometabolic and behavioral variables. We observed an inverse association between eGFR and SUA even after adjustment. In the highest tertile (3rd) of SUA, the eGFR coefficients at 30-years were-0.21 (95%CI -0.24;-0.18) for men and -0.20 (95%CI -0.23; -0.17) for women; at 22-years, were -0.09 (95%CI -0.12;-0.05) for men and -0.13 (95%CI -0.15; -0.10) for women. Higher differences among exponential means (95% CI) of eGFR between the 1st and the 3rd tertile of SUA were seen in older participants, being more pronounced in men. At 22-years, the highest difference was found in women. CONCLUSIONS In young healthy individuals from a low-middle income country, SUA level was inversely associated with eGFR. Gender-related differences in eGFR according tertiles of SUA were higher in men at 30-years and in women at 22-years.

Abstract
Background There is a paucity of data relating to the association of gout with the
occurrence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in patients with stroke.
This study aimed to determine the association of gout with the risk of
hypertension and diabetes mellitus in a cohort of stroke patients from
Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among stroke survivors in South and
East Auckland, New Zealand from the years 2010 to 2014. Electronic health
record data were collected and analysed using Statistical Package for Social
Science version 23. Multivariate logistic regression modelling adjusted for
age, gender, and ethnicity was conducted to determine the association of
gout with the risk of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in patients
discharged with a diagnosis of stroke. Results The age-, gender-, and ethnicity-adjusted odds ratio for having hypertension
and diabetes mellitus among stroke survivors with gout history were 3.25
(95% confidence interval 1.32–8.03) and 1.94 (95% confidence interval
1.12–3.36), respectively. Māori stroke survivors with gout history had the
highest risk of having diabetes mellitus with age- and gender-adjusted odds
ratio of 5.10 (95% confidence interval 1.90–18.93). Conclusion The findings from this study suggest gout may be independently associated
with an increased risk of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in patients
with stroke. Māori who are the indigenous population of New Zealand show a
greater risk of diabetes mellitus associated with a gout diagnosis compared
to other populations. This finding highlights the importance of the need for
further research with Māori stroke survivors and other indigenous
populations.

Abstract
Background:
Erding granule (EDG) widely used as an agent with the effect of heat-clearing,
detoxifying, eliminating dampness, relieving jaundice and upper respiratory tract disease in clinical
application, but the systematic chemical information and anti-hyperuricemia effect of EDG was still
unclear.
Methods:
An ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with electrospray ionization
quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC/ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS) method was utilized to
rapidly identify the chemical constituents of EDG. The anti-hyperuricemia effect of EDG was evaluated
based on the effect on xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity (in vitro) and lowering uric acid (in vivo).
Results:
198 compounds were tentatively separated and identified or characterized within 30 min by
UHPLC/ESI-Q-TOF MS/MS. These compounds were categorized as 22 coumarins, 38 flavones, 67
alkaloids, 36 organic acids, 16 sesquiterpenes, 14 lignans and 5 the others constituents. Meanwhile,
EDG significantly decreases the serum urate level of hyperuricemic mice induced by potassium
oxonate, while EDG did not significantly decrease the serum urate level of hyperuricemic mice induced
by hypoxanthine and activity of xanthine oxidase in vitro.
Conclusion:
The method developed was rapid and sensitive to characterize the chemical constituents of
EDG, and provide a systematic view of chemical information for EDG. Furthermore, we first discovered
the anti-hyperuricemia effect of EDG and it would further provide the reference for clarifying the
mechanism of EDG on lowering uric acid.

Serum Uric Acid as an Independent Risk Factor for the Presence and Severity of Early-Onset Coronary Artery Disease: A Case-Control Study. DISEASE MARKERS 2018; 2018:1236837. Abstract
Serum uric acid (UA) is the final product of purine metabolism in humans. The present study is aimed at identifying the potential association between serum UA and early-onset coronary artery disease (EOCAD). The study population consisted of 1093 EOCAD patients aged ≤50 years, and 1117 age- and sex-matched apparently healthy people served as controls. The concentrations of UA were measured by uricase method. The severity of CAD was evaluated by Gensini score. The mean serum level of UA was 5.843 ± 1.479 mg/dl in EOCAD patients and 5.433 ± 1.529 mg/dl in controls. Serum UA levels were significantly higher in the EOCAD group than those in the control group (P < 0.001) and was an independent risk factor for EOCAD (OR = 1.100, 95% CI: 1.022–1.185). The early-onset myocardial infarction patients with 3-vessel disease had higher serum UA levels than those with 1- or 2-vessel disease. The serum UA levels of EOCAD patients with acute coronary syndrome were significantly higher than those with chronic coronary artery disease. EOCAD patients with hyperuricemia had higher Gensini scores than those without hyperuricemia. In addition, the serum UA levels were affected by drinking (P < 0.01) and were positively correlated with serum creatinine (r = 0.323) and weight (r = 0.327). Our results show that serum UA was an independent risk factor for EOCAD. The serum UA levels were associated with the presence and severity of EOCAD and suggested that UA may be involved in the progression of EOCAD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between serum uric acid level and the presence and progression of carotid atherosclerosis in Chinese individuals aged 75 years or older. DESIGN Case-control study. SETTING In a teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS Five hundred and sixty-four elderlies (75 years or above) who underwent general health screening in our hospital were enrolled. MEASUREMENTS The detailed carotid ultrasound results, physical examination information, medical history, and laboratory test results including serum uric acid level were recorded, these data were used to analyze the relationship between serum uric acid level and carotid atherosclerosis. Then, subjects who underwent the second carotid ultrasound 1.5-2 years later were further identified to analyzed the relationship between serum uric acid and the progression of carotid atherosclerosis. RESULTS A total of 564 subjects were included, carotid plaque was found in 482 (85.5%) individuals. Logistic regression showed that subjects with elevated serum uric acid (expressed per 1 standard deviation change) had significantly higher incidence of carotid plaque (odds ratio, 1.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-1.75; P= 0.012) after controlling for other factors. A total of 236 subjects underwent the follow-up carotid ultrasound. Linear regression showed that serum uric acid level (expressed per 1 standard deviation change; 1 standard deviation = 95.5 μmol/L) was significantly associated with percentage of change of plaque score (P = 0.008). Multivariable linear regression showed that 1 standard deviation increase in serum uric acid levels was expected to increase 0.448% of plaque score (P = 0.023). CONCLUSION The elevated serum uric acid level may be independently and significantly associated with the presence and progression of carotid atherosclerosis in Chinese individuals aged 75 years or older.

Abstract
Serum uric acid (SUA), as the end product of purine metabolism, has proven emerging roles in human disorders. Here based on a sample of 379 middle and old-aged Chinese twin pairs, we aimed to explore the magnitude of genetic impact on SUA variation by performing sex-limitation twin modeling analyses and further detect specific genetic variants related to SUA by conducting a genome-wide association study. Monozygotic (MZ) twin correlation for SUA level (rMZ = 0.56) was larger than for dizygotic (DZ) twin correlation (rDZ = 0.39). The common effects sex-limitation model provided the best fit with additive genetic parameter (A) accounting for 46.3%, common or shared environmental parameter (C) accounting for 26.3% and unique/nonshared environmental parameter (E) accounting for 27.5% for females and 29.9, 33.1, and 37.0% for males, respectively. Although no SUA-related genetic variants reached genome-wide significance level, 25 SNPs were suggestive of association (P < 1 × 10-5). Most of the SNPs were located in an intronic region and detected to have regulatory effects on gene transcription. The cell-type specific enhancer of skeletal muscle was detected which has been reported to implicate SUA. Two promising genetic regions on chromosome 17 around rs2253277 and chromosome 14 around rs11621523 were found. Gene-based analysis found 167 genes nominally associated with SUA level (P < 0.05), including PTGR2, ENTPD5, well-known SLC2A9, etc. Enrichment analysis identified one pathway of transmembrane transport of small molecules and 20 GO gene sets involving in ion transport, transmembrane transporter activity, hydrolase activity acting on acid anhydrides, etc. In conclusion, SUA shows moderate heritability in women and low heritability in men in the Chinese population and genetic variations are significantly involved in functional genes and regulatory domains that mediate SUA level. Our findings provide clues to further elucidate molecular physiology of SUA homeostasis and identify new diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for hyperuricemia and gout.

Abstract
AIM The study was done to establish the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) and vascular function and structure parameters including carotid femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV), carotid radial pulse wave velocity (CR-PWV), cardio ankle vascular index (CAVI), ankle brachial index (ABI), and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), and the gender difference in a real-world population from China. METHODS A total of 979 subjects were enrolled (aged 60.86±11.03 years, male 416 and female 563). Value of UA was divided by 100 (UA/100) for analysis. RESULTS Body mass index (BMI), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), UA, and UA/100 were significantly higher in males compared with females (all p<0.05); pulse pressure (PP), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were lower in males than females (all p<0.05). All vascular parameters including CF-PWV, CR-PWV, CAVI, ABI, and CIMT were higher in males than females (all p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that UA/100 was independently positively linearly correlated with CAVI (B=0.143, p=0.001) and negatively correlated with ABI in the male population (B=-0.012, p=0.020). In people with higher UA, the risk of higher CF-PWV was 1.593 (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS 1. All vascular parameters were higher in males than females. There was no gender difference in the relationship between UA and vascular markers except in ABI. 2. UA was independently linearly correlated with CAVI. 3. In people with higher UA level, the risk of higher CF-PWV increased. Therefore, higher UA may influence the vascular function mainly instead of vascular structure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Recent studies have suggested that serum uric acid (SUA) induces oxidative stress and inflammation, which are involved in the mechanism of cardiac hypertrophy. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), comorbidity of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) exacerbates cardiac function. In this study, we investigated the association between SUA and cardiac hypertrophy in AF patients. METHODS AND RESULTS Initially, 1296 consecutive elderly patients (age >60) with nonvalvular AF were retrospectively selected from the inpatient clinic between January 2012 and April 2015. Demographic, clinical, and echocardiographic characteristics were carefully recorded. The final study population was 577 patients. The mean SUA level was significantly higher in patients with LVH than those without LVH. Compared with the non-LVH group, the LVH group was older, had a higher percentage of female patients, and had lower hemoglobin levels and estimated glomerular filtration rates. Patients in the LVH group also had a higher rate of coronary heart disease and fewer had history of radiofrequency ablation compared with the non-LVH group. In the hyperuricemia group, B-type natriuretic peptide levels, left atrial diameter, left ventricular mass index, and percentage of NYHA (New York Heart Association) class III/IV were significantly higher than the SUA normal group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated the independent risk factors for LVH in elderly AF patients included SUA, age, male sex, the presence of coronary heart disease, and diuretic therapy. Subgroup analysis identified SUA as a significant risk factor associated with LVH in men. CONCLUSIONS SUA was independently associated with LVH in elderly male patients with nonvalvular AF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The first objective was to examine whether A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and Body Roundness Index (BRI) can identify hyperuricemia in rural China. The second aim was to compare the relative strength of association between anthropometric indices and hyperuricemia. METHODS A total of 11,345 participants were involved in this cross-sectional study. Obesity measurements included BMI, WC, WHtR, ABSI and BRI. According to the statistical distribution of serum uric acid (SUA), we split our study population in sex-specific tertiles of SUA. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding variables, BRI (linear regression: 0.170; AUC: 0.641; OR: 1.459) showed more powerful predictive ability for hyperuricemia than BMI (linear regression: 0.151; AUC: 0.630; OR: 1.108), while having a similar predictive power for hyperuricemia as WHtR (linear regression: 0.191; AUC: 0.656; OR: 1.067) and WC (linear regression: 0.209; AUC: 0.658; OR: 1.047) in the female group, but not in the male group. However, ABSI (A) (linear regression: 0.089 for women, 0.121 for men; AUC: 0.589 for women, 0.578 for men; OR: 1.027 for women, 1.034 for men) and ABSI (B) (linear regression: 0.118 for women, 0.121 for men; AUC: 0.607 for women, 0.578 for men; OR: 1.049 for women, 1.034 for men) had the lowest predictive power for hyperuricemia in both sex categories. CONCLUSIONS ABSI, BRI, BMI, WC and WHtR were all significantly associated with hyperuricemia in both sexes. In addition, BRI rather than ABSI showed a superior predictive ability for identifying hyperuricemia than BMI in female and similar capabilities as those of WC and WHtR in the female, but not in the male gender.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death and disability worldwide. Therefore, great importance has been placed on the discovery of novel risk factors and metabolic pathways relevant in the prevention and management of CVD. Such research is ongoing and may continue to lead to better risk stratification of individuals and/or the development of new intervention targets and treatment options. This review highlights emerging biomarkers related to lipid metabolism, glycemia, inflammation, and cardiac damage, some of which show promising associations with CVD risk and provide further understanding of the underlying pathophysiology. However, their measurement methodology and assays will require validation and standardization, and it will take time to accumulate evidence of their role in CVD in various population settings in order to fully assess their clinical utility. Several of the novel biomarkers represent intriguing, potentially game-changing targets for therapy.

Abstract
The treatment of tuberculosis (TB) requires long-term multiple drug use. Hyperuricemia is frequently reported in adults, but there are few data for the pediatric population. This study aimed to review drug-related side effects in pediatric patients that received treatment for TB. Patients with active TB undergoing treatment were followed for drug-related side effects. During the 7 year period, 23 patients with a mean age of 7.9 ± 4.66 years were treated. Drug-related side effects were observed in 14 patients. Hyperuricemia occurred in 12 of the 14 patients, vs. hepatotoxicity in 2. In all, eight of the patients with hyperuricemia had ≥2 episodes during pyrazinamide (PZA) therapy. Based on these findings, we devised an algorithm that could be used for the management of hyperuricemia in patients receiving PZA because of TB, and recommend that hyperuricemia be closely monitored during PZA therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To estimate the all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality risks associated with serum uric acid levels in elderly adults. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING The Annual Geriatric Health Examination Program database from 2006 to 2010. PATICIPANTS Community-dwelling Taipei citizens aged 65 and older (N = 77,541). MEASUREMENTS Stratified according to sex, serum uric acid levels were analyzed in quartiles and as normal versus high categories. Mortality was determined by matching cohort identifications with national death files. RESULTS Men had significantly higher uric acid levels than women (P < .001), and mean levels increased with age (P < .001). Serum uric acid levels (normal vs high) were an independent risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in men and women, with the strongest association found for cardiovascular mortality. The association between serum uric acid levels and cardiovascular mortality was independent of other cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and glomerular filtration rate levels. When levels were analyzed as quartiles, men with levels in the second quartile had the lowest hazard ratios for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. CONCLUSION High serum uric acid levels are associated with greater risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality but not cancer mortality in elderly adults. Further studies are warranted to investigate the prognostic implications and potential utility in the monitoring of therapy.
