Abstract
Brønsted acid zeolites catalyze alkene oligomerization reactions, an important route to produce fuels and chemicals from light hydrocarbon feedstocks. Propene dimerization rates (per H+, 503 K) decrease monotonically with increasing crystallite size in MFI zeolites because heavy oligomer products remain occluded within microporous voids and restrict intrazeolite diffusion of reactants and products. Here, we show that the preferential zoning of framework Al centers and their associated H+ sites toward exterior surfaces of MFI crystallites in an "egg-shell" architecture minimizes the extent of diffusion-enhanced secondary reactions within a given crystallite, which increases both propene dimerization rates (per H+) and selectivity to true oligomer products. These results show that tailoring Al distributions to be spatially zoned toward external surfaces of medium-pore zeolite crystallites is efficacious at minimizing diffusion path lengths to increase alkene oligomerization rates and selectivity to true oligomer products.

Abstract
High-efficiency production of xylene/trimethylbenzene from benzene/toluene with methanol is a potential way to promote the implementation on the coupled cycle development strategy of petrochemical and coal chemical industry and optimize the resource structure. At the same time, relying on the innovation of catalytic new materials, physical chemistry, intelligent capture technology, process engineering, and other principles and methods, p-xylene (PX) and trimethylbenzene (TMB) with higher added value were prepared by C6-8~arene methylation, which could elevate the level of methylation field and improve the competitiveness of the industry. This paper focuses on the one-step methylation reaction of benzene with methanol or toluene with methanol to obtain high-purity p-xylene (BM-PX/TM-PX), and the one-step methylation reaction of xylene with methanol to obtain mesitylene (XM-TMB). The methylation reaction mechanism and the preparation strategy of a high-performance catalyst were reviewed. The high selectivity of PX obtained by precisely controlling the pore size and acid site distribution of zeolites was emphasized. Meanwhile, the current research progress of TMB, the kinetic/thermodynamics of the BM-PX/TM-PX, and XM-TMB methylation reaction were described. Based on a literature research and the conclusion of our research group, the mechanism of methylation reaction process was expounded. Finally, the new research direction of catalysts used and reaction process in methylation reaction were prospected in order to guide the rapid development of this field.

Methanol to Gasoline (MTG): Preparation, Characterization and Testing of HZSM-5 Zeolite-Based Catalysts to Be Used in a Fluidized Bed Reactor. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
The preparation of catalysts suitable for MTG processes in a fluidized bed reactor has been studied with emphasis on improving the textural, physico-chemical, morphological, structural and mechanical properties. A mixture of HZSM-5 zeolite (active material), boehmite or bentonite (binder) and alumina (inert filler) was used to prepare different catalysts. After preparation, characterization by physical adsorption of N2, XRF, XRD and SEM-EDX techniques was carried out. The screening of catalysts was performed in a fluidized bed reactor. The distribution of products was very similar in all cases, with the yield of light hydrocarbons always being higher than that of gasoline. Among the catalysts tested, the one containing boehmite as a binder (HZ_Boeh) was found as the most appropriate due to its high mechanical strength, high yield to aromatics and lower yield to durene.

Zn-P Co-Modified Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolites Directly Synthesized via Dry Gel Conversion for Enhanced Methanol to Aromatics Reaction. Catalysts 2021. Abstract
A unique method to prepare Zn-P co-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites was developed. The ZSM-5 zeolite was directly synthesized by a dry gel conversion without adding any templates or seeds. Afterwards, the hierarchical structure was endowed to the ZSM-5 zeolite by the sequential desilication-dealumination. Zn and P species were then introduced into the hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites by the impregnation method and their activity in methanol to aromatics process was investigated. It was found that the Zn-P co-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites possessed more Zn-related Lewis acid sites, and the ratio of Zn(OH)+/ZnO was increased. The catalytic evaluation results revealed that the benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) and aromatics selectivity were significantly improved from 20.59% and 29.41% of pristine ZSM-5 zeolite to 28.12% and 41.88% of Zn-P co-modified hierarchical counterpart (1.5Zn0.3P/HZSM-5), respectively. Owing to the introduced highly stable Zn-P co-modified hierarchical structures, the lifetime (conversion not less than 99%) of ZSM-5 zeolite during methanol to aromatics reaction was increased from 6 h to 18 h.

Combined Ex and In Situ Measurements Elucidate the Dynamics of Retained Species in ZSM-5 and SAPO-18 Catalysts Used in the Methanol-to-Olefins Reaction. Chemistry 2021; 27:6719-6731. Abstract
The dynamics of the retained species on ZSM-5 and SAPO-18 catalysts are studied by using a combination of temperature-programmed desorption/oxidation, ex situ analysis, and in situ FTIR spectroscopic measurements over the entire conversion range, using fixed-bed and spectroscopic cell reactors, in continuous and discontinuous mode. The results point to the appropriateness of the combined methodologies to track the interconversion of active into deactivating species. A statistically relevant (supported by linear regression and multivariate analysis) association of the observations is found by using the different complementary methodologies. The kinetics of this interconversion depends on the initial conversion (tuned by acidity and space time) and microporous topology, and involve: (i) in the ZSM-5 catalysts, the diffusion of monocyclic aromatics toward the exterior of the zeolite to form coke, and (ii) in the SAPO-18 catalysts, the obstruction of the cavities by aromatics that grow into tetracyclic aromatic islands.

Abstract
Water is formed and added in the conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons, slowing down both the reaction and deactivation rates. The retained species that are reaction intermediates and coke precursors are swept/desorbed, particularly those on silanol sites.

Abstract
Establishing structure-reactivity relationships for specific channel orientations of zeolites is vital to developing new, superior materials for various applications, including oil and gas conversion processes. Herein, a well-defined model system was developed to build structure-reactivity relationships for specific zeolite-channel orientations during various catalytic reaction processes, for example, the methanol- and ethanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH and ETH) process as well as oligomerization reactions. The entrapped and effluent hydrocarbons from single-oriented zeolite ZSM-5 channels during the MTH process were monitored by using operando UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and on-line mass spectrometry (MS), respectively. The results reveal that the straight channels favor the formation of internal coke, promoting the aromatic cycle. Furthermore, the sinusoidal channels produce aromatics, (e.g., toluene) that further grow into larger polyaromatics (e.g., graphitic coke) leading to deactivation of the zeolites. This underscores the importance of careful engineering of materials to suppress coke formation and tune product distribution by rational control of the location of zeolite acid sites and crystallographic orientations.
