Toluene Oxidation: CO2 vs Benzaldehyde: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Toluene is a common and significant volatile organic compound (VOC). Although it finds extensive application in various industrial processes (chemical manufacturing, paint and adhesive production, and as a solvent), it creates a huge environmental impact when emitted freely into the atmosphere. Two solutions were found to mitigate the emission of this pollutant: the total oxidation to CO2 and H2O and the selective oxidation into benzaldehyde. This review discusses the two main alternatives for tackling this problem: converting the toluene into carbon dioxide by total oxidation or into benzaldehyde by selective oxidation. It presents new catalytic advances, new trends, and the advantages and disadvantages of both methods.

Defective UiO-66 metal-organic gels for optimizing gaseous toluene capture

Developing high-performance sorbents for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is urgently required for environmental cleaning and personnel protection. Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been deemed attractive candidates for gaseous toluene capture due to their superior stability and high adsorption capacity. However, the practical application of powdered Zr-MOFs is hindered by inherent limitations. Here, we report a series of defective UiO-66 metal-organic gels (G66-X) with variable missing linker deficiency by altering the modulator concentration. The defect concentration of the adsorbents has a significant impact on the porosity and gaseous toluene adsorption capacity. Dynamic breakthrough results reveal that G66-9 demonstrates optimal breakthrough time of 336 min/g and uptake amount of 334 mg/g, outperforming those of many other typical toluene adsorbents. The breakthrough times and the uptake capacities dramatically decrease with the increase of adsorption temperature. An outstanding regeneration performance of adsorbents can almost maintain even after five adsorption-desorption cycles.

Single-atom Pt-CeO2/Co3O4 catalyst with ultra-low Pt loading and high performance for toluene removal

The design and manufacture of high activity and thermal stability catalysts with minimal precious metal loading is essential for deep degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this paper, a novel single-atom Pt-CeO₂/Co₃O₄ catalyst with ultra-low Pt loading capacity (0.06 wt%, denoted as 0.06Pt-SA) was fabricated via one-step co-precipitation method. The 0.06Pt-SA exhibited excellent toluene degradation activity of T₉₀ = 169 °C, matched with the nanoparticle Pt-supported CeO₂/Co₃O₄ catalyst with more than six times higher Pt loading (0.41 wt%, denoted as 0.41Pt-NP). Moreover, the ultra-long durability (toluene conversion remains 99% after 120 h stability test) and excellent toluene degradation ability in a wide space speed range of 0.06Pt-SA were superior to that of 0.41Pt-NP catalyst. The excellent performance was derived from the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between the single atomic Pt and the carrier, which induced more Pt⁰ and Ce³⁺ for oxygen activation and more Co³⁺ for toluene removal. The in situdiffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments confirmed that the conversion of intermediates was accelerated in the reaction process, thereby promoting the toluene degradation. Our results should inspire the exploitation of noble single-atomic modification strategy for developing the low cost and high performance VOCs catalyst.

Plasma-catalysis for VOCs decomposition: A review on micro- and macroscopic modeling

Plasma-catalysis has been recognized as a promising method to decompose hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) since many years ago. To understand the fundamental mechanisms of VOCs decomposition by plasma-catalysis systems, both experimental and modeling studies have been extensively carried out. However, literature on summarized modeling methodologies is still scarce. In this short review, we therefore present a comprehensive overview of modeling methodologies ranging from microscopic to macroscopic modeling in plasma-catalysis for VOCs decomposition. The modeling methods of VOCs decomposition by plasma and plasma-catalysis are classified and summarized. The roles of plasma and plasma-catalyst interactions in VOCs decomposition are also critically examined. Taking the current advances in understanding the decomposition mechanisms of VOCs into account, we finally provide our perspectives for future research directions. This short review aims to stimulate the further development of plasma-catalysis for VOCs decomposition in both fundamental studies and practical applications with advanced modeling methods.

Recent advances of metal-organic framework-based and derivative materials in the heterogeneous catalytic removal of volatile organic compounds

Since the environmental hazards of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are well known, heterogeneous catalysis has become one of the most popular methods to treat VOCs due to its environmental friendliness and simplicity of operation. Although a large number of reports have reviewed the application of catalytic oxidation for the degradation of VOCs, relatively few reports are based on this direction of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF derivatives. Herein, this paper reviews the recent applications of heterogeneous catalytic technologies in the degradation of VOCs, including photocatalysis, thermal catalysis and other catalytic approaches. The applications of MOFs and their derivatives in VOCs degradation, such as the progress of MOF-derived metal oxides in the treatment of toluene, were highlighted. The mechanisms of VOCs degradation by different catalytic approaches were systematically presented. Finally, we presented the views and directions of VOCs treatment technology development. We hope that this reaction type-oriented review will provide important insights into MOFs and MOF-derived materials for VOCs pollution control.

Pyridinium-derived polycationic covalent organic polymers for aromatic C-H bond photocatalytic oxidation

Using oxygen in the air as the sole oxidant to oxidize hydrocarbons into high value-added compounds is a highly promising synthesis strategy with economic advantages. However, the oxidation of hydrocarbons with molecular oxygen under mild conditions is challenging due to the large C-H bond energy in hydrocarbons. Herein, a metal-free two-dimensional covalent organic polymers (COP) functionalized by photoactive pyridinium units has been developed for heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons. This is the first kind of COPs material that can achieve photocatalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons without any additives or stoichiometric oxidants except for the oxygen in the air.

Structure-performance correlation guided cerium-based metal-organic frameworks: Superior adsorbents for fluoride removal in water

Fluoride in the hydrosphere exceeds the standard, which could be critically hazardous to human health and the natural environment. The adsorption method is a mature and effective way to remove pollutants in water, including fluoride. In this study, we synthesized three kinds of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) with different structures and properties by modulating the organic ligands (i.e., trimesic acid (BTC), 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA), and terephthalic acid (BDC)) via the solvothermal method. The adsorption kinetics of Ce-MOFs on fluoride well fit the pseudo second order model, and their adsorption isotherms also conform to Langmuir isothermal model. The thermodynamic study reveals that the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The maximum saturated adsorption capacities of Ce-BTC, Ce-PMA, and Ce-BDC are 70.7, 159.6, and 139.5 mg g^-1, respectively. Ce-MOFs have stable and excellent adsorption capacity at pH = 3-9. Coexisting anions (Cl^-, SO₄^2-, and NO₃^-) do not affect the performance of Ce-MOFs for fluoride removal. Moreover, Ce-MOFs also show their broad prospect as superior fluoride adsorbents because of their excellent performance and reusability in real water samples. Organic ligands have a remarkable influence on the defluoridation performance of Ce-MOFs. This work will provide a feasible idea for designing MOFs as superiors adsorbents for defluoridation.

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon from Biomass with Efficient Toluene Adsorption and Superior Catalytic Performance

The chemical composition and surface groups of the carbon support affect the adsorption capacity of toluene. To investigate the effect of catalyst substrate on the catalytic performance, two different plant biomasses, banana peel and sugarcane peel, were used as carbon precursors to prepare porous carbon catalyst supports (Cba, Csu, respectively) by a chemical activation method. After decorating PtCo₃ nanoparticles onto both carbon supports (Cba, Csu), the PtCo₃-su catalyst demonstrated better catalytic performance for toluene oxidation (T₁₀₀ = 237 °C) at a high space velocity of 12,000 h^-1. The Csu support possessed a stronger adsorption capacity of toluene (542 mg g^-1), resulting from the synergistic effect of micropore volume and nitrogen-containing functional groups, which led to the PtCo₃-su catalyst exhibiting a better catalytic performance. Moreover, the PtCo₃-su catalyst also showed excellent stability, good water resistance properties, and high recyclability, which can be used as a promising candidate for practical toluene catalytic combustion.

Visible-light-assisted persulfate activation by SnS2/MIL-88B(Fe) Z-scheme heterojunction for enhanced degradation of ibuprofen

Herein, a highly efficient Z-scheme SnS₂/MIL-88B (Fe) (SnSFe) heterojunction was successfully synthesized to use both as photocatalysts and persulfate (PS) activator for ibuprofen (IBP) degradation. Flower-liked SnS₂ was uniformly loaded on MIL-88B (Fe), and SnSFe retained the original polyhedral morphology of MIL-88B (Fe). The highest removal of IBP was achieved in the presence of SnSFe with 0.5% SnS₂(SnSFe0.5). Characteristic results and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the enhanced degradation of IBP was due to the difference in Fermi energy levels of SnS₂ and MIL-88B (Fe) leading to electrons transferred from SnS₂ to MIL-88B (Fe), and SnO bond was formed in SnSFe. , OH and O₂^- were the main active species in SnSFe0.5/PS/visible light system. Z-scheme heterojunction of SnSFe was constructed to propose the degradation mechanism. This research revealed that the synergism of photocatalysis and PS activation using SnS₂/Fe-based MOFs composites possessed great potentials in wastewater remediation.

Enhancement of the Catalytic Performance and Operational Stability of Sol-Gel-Entrapped Cellulase by Tailoring the Matrix Structure and Properties

Commercial cellulase Cellic CTec2 was immobilized by the entrapment technique in sol–gel matrices, and sol–gel entrapment with deposition onto magnetic nanoparticles, using binary or ternary systems of silane precursors with alkyl- or aryl-trimethoxysilanes, at different molar ratios. Appropriate tailoring of the sol–gel matrix allowed for the enhancement of the catalytic efficiency of the cellulase biocatalyst, which was then evaluated in the hydrolysis reaction of Avicel microcrystalline cellulose. A correlation between the catalytic activity with the properties of the sol–gel matrix of the nanobiocatalysts was observed using several characterization methods: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence microscopy (FM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA). The homogeneous distribution of the enzymes in the sol–gel matrix and the mass loss profile as a function of temperature were highlighted. The influence of temperature and pH of the reaction medium on the catalytic performance of the nanobiocatalysts as well as the operational stability under optimized reaction conditions were also investigated; the immobilized biocatalysts proved their superiority in comparison to the native cellulase. The magnetic cellulase biocatalyst with the highest efficiency was reused in seven successive batch hydrolysis cycles of microcrystalline cellulose with remanent activity values that were over 40%, thus we obtained promising results for scaling-up the process.

Scent of knowledge: The molecular fingerprint of volatiles in an emblematic historical library in Italy

Heritage guidelines recognize odors as a value associated with a place. This study aims to clarify the connection between heritage and volatile organic compounds at the molecular level. At variance with previous studies, usually focused only on book-related compounds from accelerated degradation tests, the whole air of one of the most significant historical libraries in Italy was studied. A sampling of the volatiles off-gassing from the two most iconic rooms, respectively open and forbidden to visitors, was performed via a non-invasive, nondestructive green method, solid-phase-micro-extraction. The gas-chromatographic analyses resulted in the appraisal of olfactory contributions from books, storage environment, and, for the first time, anthropic activities and pollution.Concerning the paper decay process, for the very first time, the presence of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol in the chromatographic signature of the library air is rationalized according to the Guerbet reaction. The presence of all other compounds is explained by the paper decay process, anthropic sources, and pollution. Indoor air comprises analytes related to paper decay, identified by previous studies, and additional compounds never found before.Most volatile compounds are aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, terpenes, and terpenoids. Odor contributions from a selected number of analytes were pinpointed. Alkanes dominate the volatiles chromatographic signature, and impart a slight hydrocarbon smell. Aromatics supplement their characteristic aromatic odor. Aldehydes' very low odor threshold makes them strongly contribute to both fruity and fatty descriptors. Benzaldehyde, furfural, vanillin, and camphor add, respectively, an hint of almond, bread, vanilla, and camphor. Alcohols such as 2-ethyl hexanol have a floral scent. Wood-related terpenes and terpenoids contribute to the woody smell of the library.The digital molecular fingerprint of the "scent of knowledge" enables documentation, conservation, and future chemical reproduction of the historical library odor.

Photothermal Localization in an Optofluidic Microreactor for Rapid Pretreatment toward Online Pollutant Analysis

The realization of high-efficient digestion in a microfluidic reactor is considered to be advantageous for pretreatment toward online pollutant detection. However, it is difficult to achieve satisfactory device performance due to the gap between the low digestion reaction efficiency and the demand for rapid pretreatment for online detection. Herein, we design and manufacture an optofluidic microreactor combined with a MnO₂ nanofilm localizing the heat inside the reaction chamber under solar irradiation, which contributes a lot to the on-chip nutrient digestion efficiency enhancement. The overall temperature of the water sample in the reactor chamber can be dramatically increased in a fleeting time of less than 1 s and maintained at 78 °C. The digestion rate constant of the microreactor is improved by about 100 times compared with that obtained by the traditional method in the national standard, which is attributed to temperature enhancement and various oxidation reactions in the heated reaction chamber. Notably, when pretreating the actual total phosphorus water samples, the digestion efficiency is demonstrated to be higher than 95% within 12 s under solar light irradiation. The optofluidic platform brings many benefits to accelerate the various photochemically enhanced reactions using solar light and is extremely adapted for rapid pretreatment of biochemical samples to further develop their online analysis.

A Comparative Loading and Release Study of Vancomycin from a Green Mesoporous Silica

Since its first use as a drug delivery system, mesoporous silica has proven to be a surprisingly efficient vehicle due to its porous structure. Unfortunately, most synthesis methods are based on using large amounts of surfactants, which are then removed by solvent extraction or heat treatment, leading to an undesired environmental impact because of the generated by-products. Hence, in the present study, we followed the synthesis of a silica material with a wormhole-like pore arrangement, using two FDA-approved substances as templates, namely Tween-20 and starch. As far as we know, it is the first study using the Tween-20/starch combo as a template for mesoporous silica synthesis. Furthermore, we investigated whether the obtained material using this novel synthesis had any potential in using it as a DDS. The material was further analyzed by XRD, TEM, FT-IR, N₂ adsorption/desorption, and DLS to investigate its physicochemical features. Vancomycin was selected as the active molecule based on the extensive research engaged towards improving its bioavailability for oral delivery. The drug was loaded onto the material by using three different approaches, assuming its full retention in the final system. Thermal analysis confirmed the successful loading of vancomycin by all means, and pore volume significantly decreased upon loading, especially in the case of the vacuum-assisted method. All methods showed a slower release rate compared to the same amount of the pure drug. Loadings by physical mixing and solvent evaporation released the whole amount of the drug in 140 min, and the material loaded by the vacuum-assisted method released only 68.2% over the same period of time, leading us to conclude that vancomycin was adsorbed deeper inside the pores. The kinetic release of the three systems followed the Higuchi model for the samples loaded by physical mixing and vacuum-assisted procedures, while the solvent evaporation loading method was in compliance with the first-order model.

Universitetet i Oslo-67 (UiO-67)/graphite oxide composites with high capacities of toluene: Synthesis strategy and adsorption mechanism insight

In this paper, a simple solvothermal synthesis method was proposed for the preparation of metal organic framework/graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposite (UiO-67/GO). A series of UiO-67/GO composites were prepared by varying the addition forms and amounts of GO, and the optimal synthesis conditions were screened. The composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS), water contact angles (CA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption capacity and the adsorption process of toluene were investigated by dynamic adsorption and adsorption kinetics, respectively. The results indicated that 67/GO-0.5% reached the maximum adsorption capacity (876 mg g^-1), which far exceeded the other adsorbents. Kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model correlated satisfactorily to the experimental data. The improved adsorption performance was attributed to GO, which enhanced π-π interaction, promoted defect generation and provided more adsorption sites. Finally, the excellent regeneration performance of the adsorbent was verified by temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and cyclic adsorption-desorption experiments. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was further revealed. Combined with the related adsorption experiments and the density functional theory (DFT) analysis, the efficient removal of toluene by UiO-67/GO was attributed to the cooperation of defects, π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding.
