The use of high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector for the determination of sulfide ions in human urine samples using pyrylium salts

Cu2(OH)3NO3 nanozyme sensor array for the discrimination of multiple sulfides in food

In the food industry, sulfides are commonly used as preservatives and flavor regulators. However, long-term excessive intake of sulfides can lead to serious health problems. Therefore, developing efficient sulfide detection methods is particularly important. Here, we have effectively synthesized a novel bifunctional copper hydroxide nitrate (Cu2(OH)3NO3) nanozyme with outstanding peroxidase-like and laccase-like behaviors in basic deep eutectic solvents (DES). Because the various types of sulfides have diverse regulatory effects on the two catalytic behaviors of Cu2(OH)3NO3, a two channel nanozyme sensor array based on the peroxidase-like and laccase-like behaviors of Cu2(OH)3NO3 was constructed and successfully used for the identification of six kinds of sulfides (Na2S, Na2S2O3, Na2SO3, Na2SO4, NaHSO3, and Na2S2O8). Remarkably, the sensor array has achieved successful discrimination among six sulfides present in wine, egg, and milk samples. Finally, the sensor array has successfully distinguished and differentiated three actual samples (wine, egg, and milk). This study is of great significance in promoting the efficient construction of array units and improving the effective identification of sulfides in complex food samples.

Novel H2S sensing mechanism derived from the formation of oligomeric sulfide capping the surface of gold nanourchins

A gold nanourchin (AuNU) probe with a novel sensing mechanism for monitoring H2S was developed as a feasible colorimetric sensor. In this study, AuNUs that are selectively responsive to H2S were fabricated in the presence of trisodium citrate and 1,4-hydroquinone using a seed-mediated approach. Upon exposure of the AuNU solution to H2S, the hydrosulfide ions (HS-) in the solution are converted into oligomeric sulfides by 1,4-hydroquinone used as a reducing agent during the synthesis of AuNUs. The oligomeric sulfides formed in the AuNU solution upon the addition of H2S were found to coat the surface of the AuNUs, introducing a blue shift in absorption accompanied by a color change in the solution from sky blue to light green. This colorimetric alteration by the capping of oligomeric sulfides on the surface of AuNUs is unique compared to well-known color change mechanisms, such as aggregation, etching, or growth of nanoparticles. The novel H2S sensing mechanism of the AuNUs was characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and atom probe tomography. H2S was reliably monitored with two calibration curves comprising two sections with different slopes according to the low (0.3-15 μM) and high (15.0-300 μM) concentration range using the optimized AuNU probe, and a detection limit of 0.29 μM was obtained in tap water.

Paper-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensors for on-site sensing of sulfide based on the target-induced inner filter effect

Dissolved sulfide tends to species transformation and loss upon leaving the matrix, thus the development of a practical on-site determination of sulfide is crucial for environmental monitoring and human health. In this work, a novel paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor was developed for the field analysis of sulfide, which system was constructed by the inner filter effect (IFE) of CdS quantum dots (QDs) toward carbon dots (C-dots). Instead of an aqueous phase system, the conversion of sulfide to its hydride would induce the in-situ formation of CdS QDs on the paper, which acted as an energy acceptor to quench the emission of C-dots, leading to a variation of ratiometric fluorescence from blue to yellow with the increasing concentration of sulfide. Moreover, we proposed a smartphone-based fluorescence capture device integrated with a programmed Python program, accomplishing both color recognition and accurate detection of sulfide. Under the optimal condition, this ratiometric fluorescence sensor allowed for the on-site analysis of sulfide with a limit of detection of 0.05 μM. The accuracy of the sensor was validated via the successful field analysis of environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries. Compared to other fluorescence methods used for sulfide analysis, this developed system retains the advantages of label-free, low-cost, ease of operation, and miniaturization, showing great potential for the measurement of sulfide on-site, as well as environmental monitoring.

Nanozyme colorimetric sensor array based on monatomic cobalt for the discrimination of sulfur-containing metal salts

The identification of sulfur-containing metal salts (SCMs) is of great interest because they play an important role in many biological processes and diseases. Here, we constructed a ternary channel colorimetric sensor array to detect multiple SCMs simultaneously, relying on monatomic Co embedded in nitrogen-doped graphene nanozyme (CoN₄-G). Due to the unique structure, CoN₄-G exhibits activity similar to native oxidases, capable of catalysing directly the oxidization of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by O₂ molecules independent of H₂O₂. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that CoN₄-G has no potential barrier in the whole reaction route, thus presenting higher oxidase-like catalytic activity. Based on different degrees of TMB oxidation, different colorimetric response changes are obtained as "fingerprints" on the sensor array. The sensor array can discriminate different concentrations of unitary, binary, ternary, and quaternary SCMs and has been successfully applied to detect six real samples (soil, milk, red wine and egg white). To advance the field detection of the above four types of SCMs, we creatively propose a smartphone-based autonomous detection platform with a linear range of 1.6-320 μM and a limit of detection of 0.0778-0.218 μM, which demonstrates the potential use of sensor arrays in the application of disease diagnosis and food and environment monitoring.

Ratiometric fluorescent detection of sulfide ions in Radix Codonopsis and living cells based on PVP-supported gold/copper nanoclusters with tunable dual emission

Herein, a novel fluorometric-sensor with dual-emission system was constructed on the basis of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) co-functionalized gold/copper nanoclusters (PVP/MBT-Au@CuNCs) by a facile and eco-friendly one-pot approach. The sensor exhibited ratiometric fluorescence emission (F_{590 nm}/F_{422 nm}) for visual and selective detection of S^2- with a sensitive detection limit of 11.9 nM. Besides, fluorescence quenched sensing of S^2- was chalked up by a quickly selectivity monitoring time of 30 s, owing to the strongly binding of Cu₂S and Au₂S by hard-soft-acid-base theory and the destruction of the aggregated structure of PVP/MBT-Au@CuNCs. Furthermore, the platform also provided the portable analysis for visual detection of S^2- by capturing the change in fluorescence color with a single dual-emissive ratiometric paper strip. It is worth mentioning that the fluorescent gold-copper nanoclusters showed excellent application activities in the selective detection of S^2- in Radix Codonopsis or Tremella samples and recognition of S^2- in HeLa cells or macrophages by confocal microscopy fluorescent imaging. Overall, the sensing system paved a new avenue for effectively developing a convenient ratiometric fluorescent sensor platform for evaluating the safety of food with S^2- pollution in environment and biological system.

Synthesis optimization of rich-urea carbon-dots and application in the determination of H2S in rich- and barren-liquids of desulphurizing solutions

In the research of carbon dots (CDs) containing various nitrogen sources, it was first found that urea/citric acid-CDs showed a selective discolouration reaction with sulphide ions. Therefore, by optimizing various synthesis and detection conditions of the CDs determining sulfur ions, such as the raw material ratio, temperature, time, pH, and oxidation atmosphere in the CD synthesis, a discolour CD-probe method for trace-level sulphide ions was developed. The method is environmentally friendly, shows two linear-response ranges in 0.050-1.0 mg L^-1 (A = -0.0827c + 0.8366) and 1.0-15 mg L^-1 S^2- (A = -0.0209c + 0.7587) and can be used for the high and low concentration quantification of sulphide in various wastewaters. Subsequently, in order to realize the separation and detection of sulphide ions in wastewaters or rich- and barren-liquids containing N-methyldiethanolamine and other substances in desulphurizing solutions, an automatic pretreatment system was also established.

A novel selective detection method for sulfide in food systems based on the GMP-Cu nanozyme with laccase activity

A selective and sensitive colorimetric strategy for sulfide analysis was developed using GMP-Cu nanozymes with a laccase-like activity. This research discovered for the first time that sulfide could significantly enhance the catalytic activity of the GMP-Cu nanozymes by about 3.5 folds. The enhanced laccase activities duo to two reasons. First, Cu²⁺ in GMP-Cu nanozymes was reduced to Cu⁺. The other reason was the formation of Cu-S bond which was beneficial to accelerate the electron transfer rate to improve catalytic activity. Therefore, this method showed an excellent selectivity for sulfide. And it had a linear relationship in the sulfide concentration range of 0-220 μmol/L with a detection limit of 0.67 μmol/L. Furthermore, the proposed method was successfully applied to examine sulfide in the food systems. This new method may be used in sulfide detection to improve food quality and safety.
