Biopolymer-based beads for the adsorptive removal of organic pollutants from wastewater: Current state and future perspectives

Among biopolymer-based adsorbents, composites in the form of beads have shown promising results in terms of high adsorption capacity and ease of separation from the effluents. This review addresses the potential of biopolymer-based beads to remediate wastewaters polluted with emerging organic contaminants, for instance dyes, active pharmaceutical ingredients, pesticides, phenols, oils, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls. High adsorption capacities up to 2541.76 mg g-1 for dyes, 392 mg g-1 for pesticides and phenols, 1890.3 mg g-1 for pharmaceuticals, and 537 g g-1 for oils and organic solvents have been reported. The review also attempted to convey to its readers the significance of wastewater treatment through adsorption by providing an overview on decontamination technologies of organic water contaminants. Various preparation methods of biopolymer-based gel beads and adsorption mechanisms involved in the process of decontamination have been summarized and analyzed. Therefore, we believe there is an urge to discuss the current state of the application of biopolymer-based gel beads for the adsorption of organic pollutants from wastewater and future perspectives in this regard since it is imperative to treat wastewater before releasing into freshwater bodies.

Functional magnetic alginate/gelatin sponge-based flexible sensor with multi-mode response and discrimination detection properties for human motion monitoring

The functional flexible sensors that can simultaneously detect multiple external excitations have exhibited great potential in the human-machine interaction and wearable electronics. However, it is still a primary challenge to develop a multi-mode sensor that can achieve sensitivity equilibrium towards different stimuli, and effectively recognize external stimulus while in a facile and cost-effective material and methodology. This study presented a functional flexible sensor based on natural polymer sodium alginate and gelatin sponge electrode which could detect both external mechanical and magnetic stimuli with superiorities of outstanding sensing capability and stability. With the optimal multilayered structure, it possessed high magnetic responsive sensitivity of 0.45 T-1, excellent stability and recoverability. Its electrical property variations also displayed high sensitivity and durability under cyclic stretching, bending and compressing stimuli for 1000 cycles. More importantly, the sensor could not only respond to magnetic field and compression stimuli with contrary electrical responses, but also recognize the respective input signals to decouple different stimuli in real time. Furthermore, it was developed as electronic skins and smart sensor arrays for human physiological signals and mechanical-magnetic detection. Based on excellent multifunctional response characteristics, the sensor showed significant potential in next-generation intelligent multifunctional electronic system and artificial intelligence.

Continuous treatment of highly concentrated tannery wastewater using novel porous composite beads: Central composite design optimization study

This present study depicts the successful employment of fixed-bed column for total chromium removal from tannery wastewater in dynamic mode using sodium alginate-powdered marble beads (SA-Marble) as adsorbent. The SA-Marble composite beads prepared were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method. The adsorption process performance of this bio-sorbent was examined in batches and columns for real effluent (tannery wastewater). After 90 min, the total chromium removal efficiency could be kept above 90% in the batch experiment. The adsorption kinetics fit better with the pseudo-second-order model, indicating the chemisorption process and the adsorption capacity of about 67.74 mg g-1 at 293 K (C0 = 7100 mg L-1) was obtained. Additionally, dynamic experiments indicate that the total chromium removal efficiency could be maintained above 90% after 120 min at 293 K and 60 min at 318 and 333 K; it's an endothermic but rapid process. The effects of two adsorption variables (Temperature and time) were investigated using central composite design (CCD), which is a subset of response surface methodology (total Cr, COD, sulfate, and total phosphorus percentage removal). This work paves a new avenue for synthesizing SA-Marble composite beads and provides an adsorption efficiency of total chromium removal from tannery wastewater.

Hydrophobization of aerogels based on chitosan, nanocellulose and tannic acid: Improvements on the aerogel features and the adsorption of contaminants in water

Hydrophobic chitosan aerogels are promising adsorbents for immiscible contaminants such as oils and organic solvents. However, few studies have reported the application of hydrophobic aerogels as adsorbent for organic contaminants dissolved in water. Herein, novel highly hydrophobic chitosan (CS) beads containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and hydrophobized tannic acid (HTA) composite were prepared with different CS and CNC-HTA content to achieve an optimized adsorbent to remove emerging contaminants from water in batch and fixed-bed assays. The CS@CNC-HTA beads properties were assessed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, XPS, Micro-CT, WCA, and zeta potential. Supramolecular interactions and physical interlacements between CS and CNC-HTA enabled the formation of CS@CNC-HTA beads with high porosity (98.6%), great volume of open pore space (10.16 mm³) and hydrophobicity (121.8°). The 1:1 CS@CNC-HTA beads showed the best performance for removing the pharmaceutical sildenafil citrate, the basic blue 26 dye, and the surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride, reaching adsorption capacities of 86 (73%), 375 (84%), and 390 (90%) mg.g^-1, respectively. The 1:1 CS@CNC-HTA beads efficiently removed sildenafil citrate, basic blue 26 and cetylpyridinium chloride in fixed-bed experiments with exhaustion times of 890, 300, and 470 min, respectively. Theoretical calculations and adsorption assays indicate that the main attractive interactions are pyridinium-π, π-π, electrostatic and hydrophobic.

Methylene Blue Removed from Aqueous Solution by Encapsulation of Bentonite Aerogel Beads with Cobalt Alginate

It can be difficult to remove dark methylene blue (MB) from water effectively. The use of sodium alginate and bentonite (Ben) as the matrix produced a displacement reaction that occurred in cobalt chloride, which allowed Ben to be successfully encapsulated in cobalt alginate (CA). Finally, a vacuum freeze-drying method was used to prepare a low-cost composite of CA/Ben aerogel for adsorbing MB in aqueous solutions. In addition to scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the composites were also characterized and analyzed. Different adsorption experiments were conducted in order to determine the effects of dosage, pH, adsorption time, and temperature on the adsorption performance of the adsorbent. According to the results of the experiment, the adsorption capacity of CA/Ben aerogel was 258.92 mg·g^-1, and the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model can fully explain the adsorption process of MB on this aerogel. The composite material reported in this paper is easily recycled, and the removal rate reaches 65% after four times of recycling. Moreover, compared with other adsorbents, the composite material of the invention is highly environmentally friendly and has a simple preparation process. A large-scale application of this technology is the removal of dyes from water on a large scale.

Alginic Acid Beads Containing Fluorescent Solvatochromic Dyes Display an Emission Color Response to a Cationic Surfactant

Lipophilic fluorescent dyes can be employed as sensors for surfactants present in concentrations above the critical micellar concentration (CMC) where the dyes are monodispersed in micelles. However, the surfactant concentration range over which these dyes are effective is narrowed because by the sigmoidal nature of their responses. To overcome this limitation, we developed a novel sensor material comprised of a labeled fluorescent solvatochromic dye covalently bonded to alginate gel, which is known to strongly adsorb cationic surfactants. We hypothesized that the dye-alginate conjugate would undergo fluorescent color changes in response to binding of surfactants which alter the polarity of the surrounding environment. Indeed, addition of the representative cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), to an aqueous solution of the alginate conjugated fluorescent solvatochromic dye leads to a visible fluorescent color change when the concentration of CPC is below the CMC. The average values of the color appearance parameter, referred to as a hue, of light emitted from gels, calculated by analysis of fluorescence microscopy images using ImageJ software, were found to be approximately linearly dependent on the concentration of CPC encapsulated in the alginate-fluorescent dye complex. This finding shows that absorbed CPC can be quantitatively determined over a wide concentration range in the form of simple fluorescence wavelength or visible responses.

Investigation into a Lightweight Polymeric Porous Sponge with High Magnetic Field and Strain Sensitivity

Recently, flexible sensors have gained significant attention due to their potential applications in soft robotics and biomimetic intelligent devices. However, the successful production of favorable flexible sensors integrated with high flexibility, sensitivity and excellent environment adaptability toward multiple external stimuli is still an enormous challenge. Herein, a lightweight polymeric porous sponge capable of detecting an external magnetic field and strain excitations is proposed by assembling a sodium alginate/chitosan (SA/CHI) porous sponge with micron carbonyl iron and nanoscale Fe3O4 magnetic particles (MPs). Based on the double network structure, the SA/CHI sponge possesses preferable mechanical strength and hydrophilicity, demonstrating its high flexibility and deformability. More importantly, the electrical response of the SA/CHI sponge sensors can display remarkable variation under external magnetic and mechanical stimuli due to their superior magnetic characteristics and electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, their sensing properties can maintain relatively stable recoverability and repeatability towards the periodic excitations and releases. Additionally, a potential mechanism is provided to investigate their stimuli-sensitive behavior. It is highly dependent on the microstructure variations in MPs and conductive multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) networks. Due to its exceptional magnetic controllability and appropriate electrical sensitivity, the proposed sensor shows high potential in wearable multi-sensing electronics and intelligent transport devices.

Core-Shell Structured Magnetic Carboxymethyl Cellulose-Based Hydrogel Nanosorbents for Effective Adsorption of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution

This article reports effective removal of methylene blue (MB) dyes from aqueous solutions using a novel magnetic polymer nanocomposite. The core-shell structured nanosorbents was fabricated via coating Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with a layer of hydrogel material, that synthesized by carboxymethyl cellulose cross-linked with poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide). Some physico-chemical properties of the nanosorbents were characterized by various testing methods. The nanosorbent could be easily separated from aqueous solutions by an external magnetic field and the mass fraction of outer hydrogel shell was 20.3 wt%. The adsorption performance was investigated as the effects of solution pH, adsorbent content, initial dye concentration, and contact time. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at neutral pH of 7 with a sorbent dose of 1.5 g L⁻¹. The experimental data of MB adsorption were fit to Langmuir isotherm model and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model with maximum adsorption of 34.3 mg g⁻¹. XPS technique was applied to study the mechanism of adsorption, electrostatic attraction and physically adsorption may control the adsorption behavior of the composite nanosorbents. In addition, a good reusability of 83.5% MB recovering with adsorption capacity decreasing by 16.5% over five cycles of sorption/desorption was observed.

Sponge-like Ca-alginate/Lix-84 beads for selective separation of Mo(VI) from some rare earth elements

In this investigation, a novel alginate complex was developed for the selective separation of molybdenum (Mo(VI)) ions from some rare earth elements (REEs). In this regard, alginate as a natural polysaccharide was impregnated and modified with 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime (Lix-84) and characterized using FT-IR, TGA/DTA and SEM-EDX. The relation between medium acidity, adsorption kinetics, sorbent dose, isotherm models, temperature and Mo(VI) recovery was investigated. It was concluded that the impregnation stage promoted the Mo(VI) separation. The kinetics and isotherm data were well-fitted and matched with the pseudo-first-order model and Langmuir isotherm model; respectively. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of Mo(VI) reached 72.2 mg/g. The developed material showed excellent separation performance towards Mo ions over the investigated REEs. The desorption and recovery of the loaded Mo(VI) ions were achieved using 1.0 M HCl. Reutilization of Alg/Lix-84 was confirmed up to three adsorption-desorption cycles with no damage of the beads as proved with SEM analysis. The adsorption mechanism of molybdenum onto Alg/Lix-84 was elucidated through FTIR and XPS measurements and was found to be governed by both electrostatic interaction and ion exchange. Therefore, the developed material has a promising potential for the selective separation of molybdenum from REEs-containing solution.

Compressive Alginate Sponge Derived from Seaweed Biomass Resources for Methylene Blue Removal from Wastewater

Low cost fabrication of water treatment polymer materials directly from biomass resources is urgently needed in recent days. Herein, a compressive alginate sponge (AS) is prepared from seaweed biomass resources through a green two-step lyophilization method. This material is much different from conventional oven-, air-, vacuum-dried alginate-based adsorbents, which show limitations of shrinkage, rigidness, tight nonporous structure and restricted ions diffusion, hindering its practical applications, and was used to efficiently remove methylene blue (MB), a main colorful contaminant in dye manufacturing, from wastewater. The batch adsorption studies are carried out to determine the impact of pH, contact time and concentration of dye on the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity can be obtained at 1279 mg g-1, and the shape-moldable AS can be facilely utilized as a fixed-bed absorption column, providing an efficient approach for continuous removal of MB within a short time. It is also important that such a compressive AS can be regenerated by a simple squeezing method while retaining about 70% capacity for more than ten cycles, which is convenient to be reused in practical water treatment. Compressive AS demonstrates its merits of high capability, large efficiency and easy to recycle as well as low cost resources, indicating widespread potentials for application in dye contaminant control regarding environmental protection.

Engineering sodium alginate-based cross-linked beads with high removal ability of toxic metal ions and cationic dyes

Sodium alginate (SA) beads with ultrahigh adsorption capacity were prepared via hydrogen bonds between SA and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropa-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and the AMPS was then post-cross-linked to manufacture SA/PAMPS beads. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of methylene blue (MB) and Pb²⁺ for the SA/PAMPS10 beads were 2977 and 2042 mg/g, respectively. Although the SA beads exhibited higher equilibrium adsorption capacities of MB and Pb²⁺ than those of the SA/PAMPS10 beads, the SA/PAMPS10 beads had better mechanical property and higher stability. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm described the adsorption processes of the SA/PAMPS10 beads for MB well. In addition, the SA/PAMPS10 beads could be reused with stable adsorption capacity for at least three cycles. The beads also had excellent performances on absorbing methylene violet and other heavy metal ions (Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺). Therefore, the SA-based beads with high adsorption capacity might be good candidates for industrial pollutant treatments.

Synthesis and characterization of alginate beads encapsulated zinc oxide nanoparticles for bacteria disinfection in water

The use of polymer nanocomposites as novel materials for water remediation has emerged as a promising alternative for disinfection of bacteria contaminated water. Sodium alginate, a natural biopolymer has been investigated in this study by encapsulating antimicrobial zinc oxide nanoparticles supported bentonite. The confirmation of the alginate nanocomposites was done by use of TEM, SEM-EDS and XRD. The antimicrobial activity of the alginate nanocomposites was investigated by batch studies using surface water and synthetic bacteria contaminated water containing Staphylococcus aureus. The effect of nanocomposite amount and initial bacteria concentration has been studied. The inactivation results indicated that the nanocomposite effectively inactivated bacteria in both the synthetic and surface water. With an amount of 0.5 g of the nanocomposites, no bacteria was observed in the water after 70 min of contact time with initial bacteria concentration of 200 cfu/ml for synthetic water and within a min, no bacteria was observed in the water for surface water. It is worth noting that 200 cfu/ml is the bacteria concentration range in which environmental water is likely to contain. Therefore, the results of this study have indicated that the alginate nanocomposites can be deemed as a potential antimicrobial agent for water disinfection.

Synthesis of Quercetin Loaded Nanoparticles Based on Alginate for Pb(II) Adsorption in Aqueous Solution

Pb(II) is a representative heavy metal in industrial wastewater, which may frequently cause serious hazard to living organisms. In this study, comparative studies between alginate nanoparticles (AN) and quercetin-decorated alginate nanoparticles (Q-AN) were investigated for Pb(II) ion adsorption. Characterization of AN and Q-AN were analysed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG-DSC). The main operating conditions such as pH, initial concentration of Pb(II), and co-existing metal ions were also investigated using a batch experiment. AN and Q-AN, with a diameter of 95.06 and 58.23 nm, were constituted by many small primary nanoparticles. It revealed that when initial concentration of Pb(II) is between 250 and 1250 mg L(-1), the adsorption rate and equilibrium adsorption were increased with the increase of pH from 2 to 7. The maximum adsorption capacities of 147.02 and 140.37 mg L(-1) were achieved by AN and Q-AN, respectively, with 0.2 g adsorbents in 1000 mg L(-1) Pb(II) at pH 7. The adsorption rate of Pb(II) was little influenced by the co-existing metal ions, such as Mn(II), Co(II), and Cd(II). Desorption experiments showed that Q-AN possessed a higher desorption rate than AN, which were 90.07 and 83.26 %, respectively. AN and Q-AN would probably be applied as adsorbents to remove Pb(II) and then recover it from wastewater for the advantages of simple preparation, high adsorption capacity, and recyclability.

Influence of a cationic surfactant on adsorption of p-nitrophenol by a magsorbent based on magnetic alginate beads

The paper focuses on the removal of p-nitrophenol by an adsorption process. A magnetic adsorbent was synthesized by encapsulation of magnetic functionalized nanoparticles using alginate as a green biopolymer matrix. A cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPyCl), was used to confer a hydrophobic character to the magnetic beads and thus to promote their adsorption efficiency. The effect of different parameters such as initial concentrations of both PNP and CPyCl, contact time and solution pH value on the adsorption of PNP in the presence of CPyCl was investigated. It should be noted that combination of magnetic and adsorption properties in a same material is an interesting challenge which could overcome the recovery problems of pollutant-loaded adsorbent.

Facile method for the synthesis of a magnetic CNTs–C@Fe–chitosan composite and its application in tetracycline removal from aqueous solutions

A new type of biocomposite, as-prepared carbon nanotubes–chitosan (APCNTs–CS), was prepared and characterized.
