Recent advances on metal-organic framework-based electrochemical sensors for determination of organic small molecules

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an extraordinarily versatile class of porous materials renowned for their intricate three-dimensional skeletal architectures and exceptional chemical properties. These extraordinary attributes have pushed MOFs into the vanguard of diverse disciplines such as microporous conduction, catalysis, separation, biomedical engineering, and electrochemical sensing. The focus of this review is to offer a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in designing MOF-based electrochemical sensors for detecting organic small molecules. offer a comprehensive survey of the recent progress in the methodologies adopted for the construction of MOF composites, covering template-assisted synthesis, Modification in synthesis, and post-synthesis modification. In addition, we discuss the practical application of MOF-based electrochemical sensors in the detection of organic small molecules. Our findings highlight the superior electrochemical sensing capabilities of these novel composites compared to those of their pristine counterparts. In conclusion, we provide a condensed perspective on the potential future trajectories in this domain, underscoring the impetus for continued enquiry and enhancement of MOF composite assemblies. With sustained investigation, the horizon appears bright for electrochemical sensing of small organic molecules and their myriad applications.

Controllable synthesis of Fe3C-reinforced petal-like lignin microspheres with boosted electrochemical performance and its application in high performance supercapacitors

One more effective measure to solve the energy crisis caused by the shortage of fossil energy is to convert natural renewable resources into high-value chemical products for electrochemical energy storage. Lignin has broad application prospects in this field. In this paper, three kinds of lignin with different molecular weights were obtained by the ethanol/water grading of Kraft lignin (KL). Then, different surface morphology lignin microspheres were prepared by spray drying. Finally, petal-like microspheres were successfully prepared by mixing and grinding the above four kinds of surface morphology lignin microspheres with potassium ferrate and cyanogen chloride and carbonizing at 800 °C and were later used as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Compared with the other microspheres, LMS-F3@Fe3C has the highest specific surface area (1041.42 m2 g-1), the smallest pore size (2.36 nm) and the largest degree of graphitization (ID/IG = 1.06). At a current density of 1 A g-1, the maximum specific capacitance is 786.7 F g-1. At a power density of 1000 W kg-1, the high energy density of 83.3 Wh kg-1 is displayed. This work provides a novel approach to the modulation of surface morphology and structure of lignin microspheres.

Controllable synthesis of spherical carbon particles transition from dense to hollow structure derived from Kraft lignin

The tailored synthesis of carbon particles with controllable shapes and structures from biomass as a raw material would be highly beneficial to meet the demands of various applications of carbon materials from the viewpoint of sustainable development goals. In this work, the spherical carbon particles were successfully synthesized through a spray drying method followed by the carbonization process, using Kraft lignin as the carbon source and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the activation agent. As the results, the proposed method successfully controlled the shape and structure of the carbon particles from dense to hollow by adjusting the KOH concentration. Especially, this study represents the first demonstration that KOH plays a crucial role in the formation of particles with good sphericity and dense structures. In addition, to obtain an in-depth understanding of the particle formation of carbon particles, a possible mechanism is also investigated in this article. The resulting spherical carbon particles exhibited dense structures with a specific surface area (1233 m²g^-1) and tap density (1.46 g cm^-3) superior to those of irregular shape carbon particles.

Research on the effects of hydrothermal synthesis conditions on the crystal habit of MIL-121

The investigation of the influence of hydrothermal synthesis conditions such as synthetic temperature, the amount of solvent, addition of additives including sodium hydroxide, lithium chloride and 2-methylimidazole on the morphology and size of MIL-121 was carried out. The experimental results indicated the significant impact of hydrothermal synthesis conditions on the morphologies and sizes of MIL-121 crystals. The synthesis temperature has little effect on the morphology, which is mainly reflected in the change of the aspect ratio, but the effect on the size is significant under low-temperature conditions. Additives have an important influence on the morphology and size of MIL-121. Our study provides a potential for the improvement of MIL-121 adsorption performance.

Magnetic hierarchical porous SiO2 microparticles from droplet microfluidics for water decontamination

A simple and flexible strategy based on droplet microfluidics is developed for controllable fabrication of uniform magnetic SiO2 microparticles with highly-interconnected hierarchical porous structures for enhanced water decontamination. Uniform precursor water droplets containing surfactants and homogenized fine oil droplets with a relatively high volume ratio are generated from microfluidics as templates for microparticle synthesis via hydrolysis/condensation reaction. The SiO2 microparticles possess hierarchical porous structures, containing both mesopores with size of several nanometers, and well-controlled and highly-interconnected macropores with size of hundreds of nanometers. The SiO2 microparticles synergistically integrate fast mass transfer and large functional surface area for enhanced adsorption. To demonstrate the enhanced adsorption performances for organic dyes and toxic heavy metal ions, the microparticles are respectively used for removal of methylene blue in water, and modified with thiol-groups for removal of Pb2+ ions in water. Meanwhile, the microparticles can be easily recycled by magnetic field for reuse.

Chemical Crosslinking Assembly of ZSM-5 Nanozeolites into Uniform and Hierarchically Porous Microparticles for High-Performance Acid Catalysis

Hierarchically porous zeolites combining the advantages of desirable mass transport of nanozeolites and easy separation and handling of micro-zeolites are ideal candidates in catalytic applications. Facile routes for the assembly of zeolite microparticles with hierarchical porosity and high mechanical strength are much expected. Herein, based on a microfluidic jet spray drying technology, we report a facile and scalable chemical crosslinking assembly strategy for the synthesis of hierarchical zeolite microparticles by directly using the conventional as-synthesized nanozeolite suspension as a precursor. This route not only avoids the energy-intensive centrifugal separation process of nanozeolites but also significantly increases the uniformity and mechanical strength of the microparticles. The soluble aluminosilicate species act as a stabilizer to improve the droplet stability during the drying process and then as a "cross-linker" to chemically bind and interconnect zeolite nanoparticles to form robust bodies after drying and calcination. Zeolite microparticles with variable morphologies (spherical, bowl-like, and dimpled) and uniform and controllable sizes (from 70 to 108 μm) can be obtained by adjusting the experimental parameters. The particle formation mechanism is discussed based on the zeolite microparticles obtained from the purified nanozeolite suspension as a control. The zeolite microparticles possess emerged uniform mesopores (∼6 nm) and a well-maintained high surface area, large pore volume, high microporosity, and strong acidity of the original nanozeolites. As a result, they exhibit excellent acid catalytic performances in acetolysis of epichlorohydrin and catalytic cracking of low-density polyethylene, far better than those of the commercial ZSM-5.

Anisotropic interaction driven surface modulation on spray-dried microgranules

Rapid evaporation of solvent from spray colloidal droplets induces directed self-assembly among the nanoparticles, eventually interlocking them into correlated granular structures. In this work, it is demonstrated that anisotropy in colloidal interparticle interaction plays a key role in governing the surface topology of spray-dried granules. Colloidal dispersion comprised of spherical nanosilica (NS) and cylindrical carbon nanotubes (CNT) was chosen as a model system in this regard. For identical polarities of the colloidal components, granules with prominent wrinkle-like modulations are obtained, which is in drastic contrast with the case of opposite polarities. The extent of surface modulation depends on the relative concentration of CNT with respective to NS. A plausible mechanism for the formation of surface modulation is elucidated on the basis of the evolving anisotropic interparticle interactions during assembly. Electron microscopy, small-angle scattering, Raman spectroscopic techniques have been used for quantitative characterization of these micro-granules.

Microsphere Assemblies via Phosphonate Monoester Coordination Chemistry

By complexing a bent phosphonate monoester ligand with cobalt(II), coupled with in situ ester hydrolysis, coordination microspheres (CALS=CALgary Sphere) are formed whereas the use of the phosphonic acid directly resulted in a sheet-like structure. Manipulation of the synthetic conditions gave spheres with different sizes, mechanical stabilities, and porosities. Time-dependent studies determined that the sphere formation likely occurred through the formation of a Co²⁺ and ligand chain that propagates in three dimensions through different sets of interactions. The relative rates of these assembly processes versus annealing by ester hydrolysis and metal dehydration determine the growth of the microspheres. Hardness testing by nanoindentation is carried out on the spheres and sheets. Notably, no templates or capping agents are employed, the growth of the spheres is intrinsic to the ligand geometry and the coordination chemistry of cobalt(II) and the phosphonate monoester.
