Abstract
The removal to oils from water has become a global issue because of the growing of wastewater discharge and unceasing appearance of oil leaks. Herein, a kind of durably dual superlyophobic (superhydrophobic under oil and superoleophobic under water) cotton fabric (CF) was fabricated via simple assembly route that introduced guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride‑calcium (GHTC-Ca) chelate compound on the fabric surface. The coated CF exhibits good resistance to mechanical abrasion, corrosive aqueous solution, high temperature, and organic solvent immersion. Furthermore, due to prewetting-caused superoleophobicity underwater and superhydrophobicity underoil, the as-prepared CF can selectively separate both heavy oils and light oils in water under extremely harsh conditions with separation efficiencies as high as 98.7 % and 98.4 %, respectively. More importantly, the as-prepared fabrics are able to remove dispersed oil droplets from oil-in-water emulsions and water droplets from water-in-oil emulsions with separation efficiency of over 89 % and 91.4 %, respectively. Hence, this prominent separation performance suggests a good application prospect of GHTC-Ca functionalized CF in oily water purification.

Abstract
Oily sewage has made serious impact on environment and people's life, and its treatment has become a global problem to be urgently solved. Oil-water separation has been considered to be an effective method to treat oily sewage at present. In this work, an underwater super-oleophobic/super-hydrophilic membrane with oil-water separation and self-cleaning properties was fabricated by electrochemical oxidation of sodium lignosulfonate doped polypyrrole. The membrane showed super-hydrophilicity for water-removal in air and super-hydrophilicity for oil-removal underwater in both oxidation and reduction states. The oil-water separation efficiency of the membranes for different organics exceeded 98.44%, no matter in oxidation or reduction state. Moreover, the membrane still exhibited excellent performance in terms of the oil-water separation efficiency and flux after 70 cycles, which were greater than 97.18% and 70.14 L·m-2·h-1, respectively. Simultaneously, through exploration of the mechanism, it was found that the larger anion kept intact in the membrane during the redox process, which made the stability of composition and performance. Thus, the membrane with advantageous properties, including underwater super-oleophobic/super-hydrophilicity, high oil-water separation efficiency, high circulating rate and stability, has significant potential in separation and collection of oily sewage.

Abstract
The superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials based on polyurethane foams have been layered with three different polymers and extensive modification with iron/magnetic nanocomposite. The general desires are to study the effect of the polymer layer and to eliminate the oil contaminant from the oil-water system which is crucial due to the development of environmental technologies. These materials were generated by facile dip-coating two-step method on the polyurethane foams (PUF) surface. PUF was directly layered with polydopamine/polypyrrole/polyaniline (PDA/PPy/PANI) and incorporated with Fe-SA (stearic acid) nanocomposites by ultrasonication and refluxing. In addition, characterization by FTIR, SEM/EDX, XRD, and TGA presented that the polymer layer and Fe-SA nanocomposites successfully covered the PUF surface caused by the chelating interaction between the carboxylates and active sites on iron particles due to intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction. Interestingly, the water contact angle (WCA) measurement of the nanocomposites displayed that the contact angle significantly improved up to 164°. After 20 cycles of oil absorption capacity, the WCA steadily remained up to 153° indicating powerful superhydrophobic properties of the materials. Furthermore, the oil absorption capacity of the materials was evaluated using typical oil-water separation methods such as reusability, separation efficiency, and oil permeate flux. The results exhibited that the modified PUFs have enhanced the absorption capacity up to 44 times the foam weight, 99 % separation efficiency, and about 8000 L.m-2.h-1 oil flux. For oil removal, the dyed oil phase was rapidly absorbed within 2 s confirming the highly used products for a wide area of oil-water separation. PDA-coated PUF nanocomposites obtained the most outstanding results due to their remarkable interfacial adhesion properties which provide larger active functional groups for hydrogen bonding interaction on PUF surface and Fe-SA nanocomposites.

Abstract
Nanomaterials use in cosmetics is markedly enhancing, so their exposure and toxicity are important parameters to consider for their risk assessment. This review article provides an overview of the active cosmetic ingredients used for cosmetic application, including dermal cosmetics and also hair dye cosmetics, as well as their safety assessment, enriched with a compilation of the safety assessment tests available to evaluate the different types of toxicity. In fact, despite the increase in research and the number of papers published in the field of nanotechnology, the related safety assessment is still insufficient. To elucidate the possible effects that nanosized particles can have on living systems, more studies reproducing similar conditions to what happens in vivo should be conducted, particularly considering the complex interactions of the biological systems and active cosmetic ingredients to achieve newer, safer, and more efficient nanomaterials. Toward this end, ecological issues and the toxicological pattern should also be a study target.

Abstract
A functional material integrated with a variety of functions is highly desired in wastewater treatment. In this research, a mussel-inspired method of immobilizing silver nanoparticles on the skeleton of a melamine sponge is proposed and applied for water remediation. Ag NPs were reduced in situ and grown on a polydopamine-modified melamine sponge. The catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of the obtained MS-PDA-Ag was evaluated, and the results demonstrated that the MS-PDA-Ag presented high catalytic reduction activity. In addition, the monolithic MS-PDA-Ag presents excellent reusability with no remarkable decrease in catalytic efficiency after multiple reuses. Owing to the immobilized Ag NPs, the MS-PDA-Ag can also effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria against both gram-positive and gram-negative species, making it possible for bacteria elimination in polluted water. To further explore the possibility of utilizing the MS-PDA-Ag for versatile applications, a superhydrophobic derivative (S-MS-PDA-Ag) was prepared by coating a low-surface-energy substance (octadecanethiol) on the surface of MS-PDA-Ag. The obtained S-MS-PDA-Ag presents the capacities of oil/organics adsorption and water repellence, which can separate the insoluble oil/organics from water. The melamine sponge immobilized with Ag NPs demonstrates prominent catalytic reduction of 4-NP, antibacterial activity and the superhydrophobic derivative presents the capacity of insoluble oil/organics separation from oil-water mixtures, exhibiting high potential in the remediation of polluted water.

Abstract
Polypyrrole (PPY) spherical particles synthesized using carbon dots as an efficient catalyst were strongly embedded on fluorinated nonwoven fabric by ultrasonication to form a membrane with high hydrophilicity. An optimal amount of PPY adhered to the membrane after 30 min of sonication enhanced the overall membrane area with high hydrophilicity. Oil with high hydrophobicity was repelled by the resulting membrane, whereas water was freely penetrated and diffused from the membrane. The membrane exhibited good reusability and efficiency for the recovery of oil from a cooking oil-water mixture within 30 s. The incorporation of PPY in the fluorinated fabric imparts significant antibacterial properties against two common pathogens, Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive). The anti-biofouling membrane could pave the way for its potential application to separate spilled oil from contaminated waters, comprising different microorganisms and living species. The novelty of this manuscript is described in a new system, the fabrication of PPY membranes with two important properties: biocidal and oil/water separation.

Abstract
The occurrence of membrane fouling has resulted in limited wastewater treatment applications. The development of superhydrophilic-underwater superoleophobic materials has received significant attention owing to their good anti-fouling properties. However, to fabricate such materials need costly regents and tedious steps. Thus, developing a one-step process to prepare a low-cost material for oil/water separation is still desired. In this study, bio-inspired from an arachnid, inorganic carbon nanotube stainless steel meshes (CNT@SSMs) having superhydrophilic-underwater superoleophobic and excellent anti-fouling properties and a unique fiber structure were fabricated via a one-step thermal chemical vapor deposition method. The CNT@SSMs had a small pore size enabling a high water flux of 10,639 L m-2h-1 and the separation of oily wastewater, including various emulsions, at a high rejection ratio of >98.89%. As a result of its excellent chemical stability under high temperatures, a broad pH range, and saline environments, the CNT@SSM has the potential to be used in extreme conditions. In summary, these CNT@SSMs are easy to fabricate and are low-cost as a result of inexpensive reagents involved. Moreover, these novel superwetting membranes are promising candidates for treatment of hazardous oily wastewater.

Abstract
Studies toward tailoring macroscopic extreme wetting behaviors on a certain well-defined surface in multiphase media are significant but still at an infant stage. Herein, superantiwetting evolutions in the oil-water-air system can be programmed from single to quadruple superrepellence by controlling the surface hydrophobic-hydrophilic heterogeneous chemistry. Ammonia vapor exposure makes the realization of challenging superhydrophilicity-superoleophobicity possible in air medium, causing the transition from quadruple to triple superantiwetting states in the oil-water-air system. Upon UV illumination, only single superrepellence-underwater superoleophobicity is maintained on titanium dioxide (TiO2, P25)-based coatings. A reversible transition between underoil superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity via an alternating UV irradiation and heating process leads to a switching between "water-absorbing" and "size-sieving" effects in water-in-oil emulsion separation. A comparative study for investigating two such effects in emulsion separation is further investigated. The current conceptual insights not only extend superwetting states to multiphase media, but can also deepen the understanding of the relationship between macroscopic extreme wetting behaviors and surface chemistry.

Abstract
It is believed of great interest to incorporate silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) into stable supported materials using biological methods to control the adverse properties of nanoscale particles. In this study, in-situ biofabrication of Ag-NPs using Entada spiralis (E. spiralis) aqueous extract in Ceiba pentandra (C. pentandra) fiber as supporting material was used in which, the E. spiralis extract acted as both reducing and stabilizing agents to incorporate Ag-NPs in the C. pentandra fiber. The properties of Ag-NPs incorporated in the C. pentandra fiber (C. pentandra/Ag-NPs) were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Transmission Electron Microscope (FETEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Thermogravimetric (TGA) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analyses. The average size of Ag-NPs measured using FETEM image was 4.74 nm spherical in shape. The C. pentandra/Ag-NPs was easily separated after application, and could control the release of Ag-NPs to the environment due to its strong attachment in C. pentandra fiber. The C. pentandra/Ag-NPs exposed good qualitative and quantitative antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Proteus vulgaris (ATCC 33420). The dye catalytic properties of C. pentandra/Ag-NPs revealed the dye reduction time in which it was completed within 4 min for 20 mg/L rhodamine B and 20 min for 20 mg/L methylene blue dye, respectively. Based on the results, it is evident that C. pentandra/Ag-NPs are potentially promising to be applied in wound healing, textile, wastewater treatment, food packaging, labeling and biomedical fields.

Abstract
Superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity demonstrate mutual advantages in various water-related interfacial applications. However, achieving such two opposite superwetting states on a single one-fabric surface without introducing any continuous external stimulus remains a great challenge. In this work, a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) modification methodology for achieving superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity on a single one-fabric surface is presented. The CVD methodology plays a crucial role in realizing such unusual superwetting properties that can be achieved through a moderate synergetic effect from hydrophobic and hydrophilic components in surface chemistry. Driven only by gravity, the as-prepared fabric with reasonable resistance to repeatable laundering cycles and long-time corrosive liquid submersion can be further applied in high-efficiency on-demand oil-water separation.

Gravity-driven catalytic nanofibrous membrane with microsphere and nanofiber coordinated structure for ultrafast continuous reduction of 4-nitrophenol. J Colloid Interface Sci 2019; 538:108-115. [PMID: 30502531 DOI: 10.1016/j.jcis.2018.11.086] [Citation(s) in RCA: 18] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/16/2018] [Revised: 11/21/2018] [Accepted: 11/22/2018] [Indexed: 01/27/2023]
Abstract
Silver loaded nanofibrous membrane with high catalytic performance for 4-nitrophenol under continuous gravity-driven filtration was developed in this study. A polydopamine (PDA) microsphere and nanofiber coordinated composite structure was fabricated through an in situ PDA synthesis to achieve a high catalyst loading and controllable residence time of 4-nitrophenol. The incorporated PDA microspheres played an important role for the enhancement of catalytic performance due to the increased surface area (23% increase compared with PAN and PAN-PDAs-Ag) and reduced membrane porosity. Silver loading amount and the residence time of 4-nitrophenol was increased by more than 108% (from 1.2 wt% to 2.5 wt%) and 45% (from 0.79 s to 1.15 s) when comparing with PAN-PDAc-Ag and PAN-PDAs-Ag nanofibrous membrane. The conversion rate of 4-nitrophenol in a gravity-driven filtration process was as high as 97% when PAN-PDAs-Ag nanofibrous membrane was used, which was much higher than the PAN-PDAc-Ag membrane (80%). In addition, the PAN-PDAs-Ag nanofibrous membrane exhibited excellent recycle performance, the conversion rate was maintained as high as 93% after five times of reuse. The microsphere and nanofiber coordinated structure with enhanced surface area and controllable residence time of contaminants proposed in this study might advance the real applications of electrospun nanofibrous membrane for catalytic removal of contaminants.
