Synthesis and optimization of polyurethane microcapsules containing [BMIm]PF6 ionic liquid lubricant

Preparation and characterization of chitosan/ZnO-Ag composite microcapsules and their applications in solar energy harvesting and electromagnetic interference shielding

Phase change microcapsules are known for their latent heat storage capability. However, the efficient absorption and utilization of solar energy by these microcapsules remains a significant challenge. In this study, we successfully prepared composite phase change microcapsules containing ZnO-Ag nanospheres, chitosan, and paraffin. These microcapsules demonstrated remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency. ZnO was found to effectively absorb ultraviolet light, while the plasmonic resonance of Ag was utilized to absorb and make use of light energy in the visible region. Moreover, due to the synergistic absorption and reflection of electromagnetic waves by ZnO-Ag nanoparticles and graphene, the well-dispersed chitosan/ZnO-Ag composite microcapsules and graphene in the fabric coating demonstrated exceptional electromagnetic shielding performance. In addition, the coated fabric based on composite microcapsules exhibited excellent antibacterial properties, effectively inhibiting the growth of bacteria such as S. aureus and E. coli. This antibacterial performance adds to their potential applications in various fields. These multifunctional phase change microcapsules offer vast potential for the effective utilization of solar energy, serving as efficient photothermal conversion and energy storage materials.

Progress in Fabrication and Applications of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Microcapsules

Liquid crystals (LCs) are well known for inherent responsiveness to external stimuli, such as light, thermal, magnetic, and electric fields. Cholesteric LCs are among the most fascinating, since they possess distinctive optical properties due to the helical molecular orientation. However, the good flow, easy contamination, and poor stability of small-molecule LCs limit their further applications, and microencapsulation as one of the most effective tools can evade these disadvantages. Microencapsulation can offer shell-core structure with LCs in the core can strengthen their stability, avoiding interference with the environment while maintaining the stimuli-responsiveness and optical properties. Here, we report recent progress in the fabrication and applications of cholesteric LC microcapsules (CLCMCs). We summarize general properties and basic principles, fabrication methods including interfacial polymerization, in-situ polymerization, complex coacervation, solvent evaporation, microfluidic and polymerization of reactive mesogens, and then give a comprehensive overview of their applications in various popular domains, including smart fabrics, smart sensor, smart displays, anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, biomedicine and actuators. Finally, we discuss the currently facing challenges and the potential development directions in this field.

Versatile Fabrication of Polymer Microcapsules with Controlled Shell Composition and Tunable Performance via Photopolymerization

In this work, a series of polymer microcapsules based on UV-curable prepolymers are prepared by combining an emulsion template and photopolymerization. The modulation of the shell structure is achieved by employing UV-curable prepolymers with different chemical structures (polyurethane acrylates, polyester acrylates, and epoxy acrylates) and functionalities (di-, tetra-, and hex-). The relationships between the shell structure and the microcapsule properties are investigated in detail. The results show that the properties of the microcapsules can be effectively regulated by adjusting the composition and cross-linking density of the shell. Epoxy acrylate-based microcapsules exhibit higher impermeability, solvent resistance, and barrier and mechanical properties than polyurethane acrylate and polyester acrylate-based microcapsules. Using UV-curable prepolymer with high functionality as a shell-forming material could effectively improve the impermeability, solvent resistance, and barrier and mechanical properties of microcapsules. In addition, the dispersion of microcapsules in the coating matrix tends to follow the "similar component, better compatibility" principle, i.e., a uniform dispersion of the microcapsule in the coating matrix is more easily achieved when the compositions of the microcapsule shell and coating are similar in structure. The convenient adjustment of the shell structure and the investigation of the "structure-property" relationship provide guidance for the further controlled design of microcapsules.

Preparation and Characterization of Magnetic Metal–Organic Frameworks Functionalized by Ionic Liquid as Supports for Immobilization of Pancreatic Lipase

Enzymes are difficult to recycle, which limits their large-scale industrial applications. In this work, an ionic liquid-modified magnetic metal–organic framework composite, IL-Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂, was prepared and used as a support for enzyme immobilization. The properties of the support were characterized with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and so on. The catalytic performance of the immobilized enzyme was also investigated in the hydrolysis reaction of glyceryl triacetate. Compared with soluble porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL), immobilized lipase (PPL-IL-Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂) had greater catalytic activity under reaction conditions. It also showed better thermal stability and anti-denaturant properties. The specific activity of PPL-IL-Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ was 2.3 times higher than that of soluble PPL. After 10 repeated catalytic cycles, the residual activity of PPL-IL-Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ reached 74.4%, which was higher than that of PPL-Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ (62.3%). In addition, kinetic parameter tests revealed that PPL-IL-Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ had a stronger affinity to the substrate and, thus, exhibited higher catalytic efficiency. The results demonstrated that Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ modified by ionic liquids has great potential for immobilized enzymes.

Preparation and Tribological Properties of Self-Lubricating Epoxy Resins with Oil-Containing Nanocapsules

The design and development of self-lubricating materials aid in enhancing the tribological performance and prolonging the service life of aero self-lubricating spherical plain bearings. Herein, monodisperse hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres (HMCNs) with thin shell thickness and uniform particle size were synthesized. Afterward, oil-containing nanocapsules (Oil@HMCNs) were obtained by the impregnation method, which was an innovative approach to prepare nanoscale capsules. The Oil@HMCNs were monodispersed, and the oil content rate could reach 45 wt %. The nanocapsules were applied as additives to achieve the self-lubricating properties of epoxy resin (EP). It was revealed that the coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear rate of EP in dry friction can be decreased from 0.56 to 0.084 and from 50.15 × 10^-6 to 0.27 × 10^-6 mm³/N/m, respectively. The tribological properties of EP composites in dry friction are better than those of EP with external oil. According to the analysis of friction pairs, the antifriction performance was contributed by the released automatic transmission fluid 6HP (ATF6) from nanocapsules. Meanwhile, the presence of ATF6 effectively could inhibit fatigue wear, and the decrease of compressive strength and surface hardness led to plastic deformation and mechanical polishing. Both resulted in a lower wear rate of EP. In conclusion, this work explored the application possibility of hollow mesoporous materials in lubrication. The prepared EP composites exhibited excellent tribological performances and self-lubricating properties, which were expected to be applied to self-lubricating spherical plain bearings and other mechanical parts.

Lignocellulosic Materials for the Production of Biofuels, Biochemicals and Biomaterials and Applications of Lignocellulose-Based Polyurethanes: A Review

The present review is devoted to the description of the state-of-the-art techniques and procedures concerning treatments and modifications of lignocellulosic materials in order to use them as precursors for biomaterials, biochemicals and biofuels, with particular focus on lignin and lignin-based products. Four different main pretreatment types are outlined, i.e., thermal, mechanical, chemical and biological, with special emphasis on the biological action of fungi and bacteria. Therefore, by selecting a determined type of fungi or bacteria, some of the fractions may remain unaltered, while others may be decomposed. In this sense, the possibilities to obtain different final products are massive, depending on the type of microorganism and the biomass selected. Biofuels, biochemicals and biomaterials derived from lignocellulose are extensively described, covering those obtained from the lignocellulose as a whole, but also from the main biopolymers that comprise its structure, i.e., cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. In addition, special attention has been paid to the formulation of bio-polyurethanes from lignocellulosic materials, focusing more specifically on their applications in the lubricant, adhesive and cushioning material fields. High-performance alternatives to petroleum-derived products have been reported, such as adhesives that substantially exceed the adhesion performance of those commercially available in different surfaces, lubricating greases with tribological behaviour superior to those in lithium and calcium soap and elastomers with excellent static and dynamic performance.

Biodegradable Polymers for Microencapsulation Systems

Environmentally friendly alternatives have become sought after upon the development of scientific research and industrial processes. Recent trends suggest biodegradable polymers as the most promising solution for synthetic microcapsule systems. Safety, efficiency, biocompatibility, and biodegradability are some of the properties that biodegradable systems in microencapsulation can provide for a broad spectrum of applications. The controlled release of encapsulated active agents is a research field that, over the years, has been constantly innovating due to the promising applications in the areas of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, textile industry, among others. This article presents an overview of different polymers with potential for microcapsule synthesis, namely, biodegradable polymers. First, natural polymers are discussed, which are divided into two categories: polysaccharide-based polymers (cellulose, starch, chitosan, and alginate) and protein polymers (gelatin). Second, synthetic polymers are described, where biodegradable polymers such as polyesters, polyamides, among others appear as examples. For each polymer, this review presents its origin, relevant properties, applications, and examples found in the literature regarding its use in biodegradable microencapsulation systems.

Microfluidic Production of Monodisperse Biopolymer Microcapsules for Latent Heat Storage

Microencapsulation of phase change materials in a polymer shell is a promising technology to prevent them from leakage and to use them as a handleable powder state. However, the microencapsulation process is a time-consuming process because the typical shell-forming step requires polymerization or evaporation of the solvent. In this study, we report a simple and rapid flow process to prepare monodisperse biocompatible cellulose acetate (CA) microcapsules encapsulating n-hexadecane (HD) for latent heat storage applications. The microcapsules were prepared by combining microfluidic droplet formation and subsequent rapid solvent removal from the droplets by solvent diffusion. The diameter and shell thickness of the microcapsules could be controlled by adjusting the flow rate and the HD-to-CA weight ratio in the dispersed phase. We found that 1-hexadecanol added to the microcapsules played the role of a nucleation agent and mitigated the supercooling phenomenon during crystallization. Furthermore, cross-linking of the CA shell with poly(propylene glycol), tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate terminated, resulted in the formation of a thin and dense shell. The microcapsules exhibited a 66 wt % encapsulation efficiency and a 176 J g^-1 latent heat storage capacity, with negligible supercooling. We believe that this microflow process can contribute to the preparation of environmentally friendly microcapsules for heat storage applications.

Synthesis and characterization of microencapsulated phase change materials with chitosan-based polyurethane shell

In this paper, chitosan-based polyurethane (c-PU) microencapsulated phase change materials (MicroPCMs) were prepared via the interfacial polymerization reaction of hexamethylene diisocyanate and chitosan accompanied by the charge attraction-assisted. The utilization of natural non-toxic chitosan in MicroPCMs expanded the application of chitosan and guided a new approach to preparing green shell. And the morphology of MicroPCMs with different reaction ration, surfactant and the pH value of reaction system were systematically investigated. The MicroPCMs with c-PU shell exhibited outstanding latent thermal performance (ΔH_m = 106.3 J/g, ΔH_c = -105.1 J/g), high energy storage efficiency (E = 71.4%), excellent thermal stability and cyclic durability. The c-PU MicroPCMs with reversible photochromic show promising application in the fields of anti-counterfeiting technology and flexible wearable UV protective clothing.

Engineering encapsulated ionic liquids for next-generation applications

Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted considerable attention in several sectors (from energy storage to catalysis, from drug delivery to separation media) owing to their attractive properties, such as high thermal stability, wide electrochemical window, and high ionic conductivity. However, their high viscosity and surface tension compared to conventional organic solvents can lead to unfavorable transport properties. To circumvent undesired kinetics effects limiting mass transfer, the discretization of ILs into small droplets has been proposed as a method to increase the effective surface area and the rates of mass transfer. In the present review paper, we summarize the different methods developed so far for encapsulating ILs in organic or inorganic shells and highlight characteristic features of each approach, while outlining potential applications. The remarkable tunability of ILs, which derives from the high number of anions and cations currently available as well as their permutations, combines with the possibility of tailoring the composition, size, dispersity, and properties (e.g., mechanical, transport) of the shell to provide a toolbox for rationally designing encapsulated ILs for next-generation applications, including carbon capture, energy storage devices, waste handling, and microreactors. We conclude this review with an outlook on potential applications that could benefit from the possibility of encapsulating ILs in organic and inorganic shells.

Encapsulated ionic liquids (ILs) are candidate materials for several applications owing to the attractive properties of ILs combined with the enhanced mass transfer rate obtained through the discretization of ILs in small capsules.

Chemical Vapor Deposition of Ionic Liquids for the Fabrication of Ionogel Films and Patterns

Film deposition and high-resolution patterning of ionic liquids (ILs) remain a challenge, despite a broad range of applications that would benefit from this type of processing. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of ILs. The IL-CVD method is based on the formation of a non-volatile IL through the reaction of two vaporized precursors. Ionogel micropatterns can be easily obtained via the combination of IL-CVD and standard photolithography, and the resulting microdrop arrays can be used as microreactors. The IL-CVD approach will facilitate leveraging the properties of ILs in a range of applications and microfabricated devices.

Preparation and Performance of Dual-functional Magnetic Phase-change Microcapsules

The fabrication of desired anti-magnetic materials for irradiation shielding remains a challenge to date. In this work, a new type of dual-functional magnetic shielding phase change microcapsules with paraffin as the core, melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin as the shell and doped with magnetic particles in the shell were successfully prepared by in situ polymerization. The magnetic particles were dispersed in the shell layer by coating a hydrophilic emulsifier on the surface. These microcapsules were specifically applied to the field of magnetic shielding by the screen printing method. The effect of magnetic particles on the performance of phase-change microcapsules was examined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses. The magnetic type and magnetic strength of the microcapsules were studied by the vibrating sample magnetometer. Moreover, the effects of different magnetic particles (Fe₃ O₄ , CrO₂ ) on the performance of phase change microcapsules and the magnetic strength of microcapsules were compared. The results showed that these two kinds of magnetic particles can greatly improve the phase change latent heat, thermal stability, and thermal conductivity of the microcapsules. Finally, the great magnetic shielding role of these microcapsules was demonstrated in both static and pulsed magnetic fields through the screen printing of magnetic shielding ink on wallpaper. Incorporating 0.5 g Fe₃ O₄ inside of microcapsules, specifically, the magnetic intensity was effectively reduced by ∼250 Oe within a short distance in the static field. We expect that these magnetic microcapsules hold great potential for the shielding of irradiations via the screen printing on various substrates.

Synthesis of Core-Shell Micro/Nanoparticles and Their Tribological Application: A Review

Owing to the diverse composition, adjustable performance, and synergistic effect among components, core–shell micro/nanoparticles have been widely applied in the field of tribology in recent years. The strong combination with the matrix and the good dispersion of reinforcing fillers in the composites could be achieved through the design of core–shell structural particles based on the reinforcing fillers. In addition, the performance of chemical mechanical polishing could be improved by optimizing the shell material coated on the abrasive surface. The physical and chemical state of the core–shell micro/nanoparticles played important effects on the friction and wear properties of materials. In this paper, the synthesis methods, the tribological applications (acted as solid/liquid lubricant additive, chemical mechanical polishing abrasives and basic units of lubricant matrix), and the functionary mechanisms of core–shell micro/nanoparticles were systematically reviewed, and the future development of core–shell micro/nanoparticles in tribology was also prospected.

Preparation and tribological behaviour of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules containing friction modifiers

Aims: Microcapsules comprising of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) shell and friction modifier (FM) core were prepared to reduce the friction and extend the service life of engine lubricating oil.Methods: Microcapsules containing both organic FM and molybdenum FM were produced via solvent evaporation technique. The friction coefficient, thermal stability, and chemical composition of microcapsules were investigated.Results: The incorporation of microcapsules in lubricating oil dramatically reduced the friction coefficient to be lower than that of virgin FM. Organic FM and molybdenum FM are compatible during the encapsulation process. The release of the FM inside the microcapsules was controllable by thermal degradation of polymeric shell at 150 °C or mechanical rupture at room temperature.Conclusions: This study provided a novel approach to improve the tribological properties of lubricating oil with long service life, facile fabrication and low cost and will find potential applications in lubrication industry for internal combustion engines.

Ionic liquid lubricants: when chemistry meets tribology

Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as potential lubricants in 2001. Subsequently, there has been tremendous research interest in ILs from the tribology society since their discovery as novel synthetic lubricating materials. This also expands the research area of ILs. Consistent with the requirement of searching for alternative and eco-friendly lubricants, IL lubrication will experience further development in the coming years. Herein, we review the research progress of IL lubricants. Generally, the tribological properties of IL lubricants as lubricating oils, additives and thin films are reviewed in detail and their lubrication mechanisms discussed. Considering their actual applications, the flexible design of ILs allows the synthesis of task-specific and tribologically interesting ILs to overcome the drawbacks of the application of ILs, such as high cost, poor compatibility with traditional oils, thermal oxidization and corrosion. Nowadays, increasing research is focused on halogen-free ILs, green ILs, synthesis-free ILs and functional ILs. In addition to their macroscopic properties, the nanoscopic performance of ILs on a small scale and in small gaps is also important in revealing their tribological mechanisms. It has been shown that when sliding surfaces are compressed, in comparison with a less polar molecular lubricant, ion pairs resist "squeeze out" due to the strong interaction between the ions of ILs and oppositely charged surfaces, resulting in a film that remains in place at higher shear forces. Thus, the lubricity of ILs can be externally controlled in situ by applying electric potentials. In summary, ILs demonstrate sufficient design versatility as a type of model lubricant for meeting the requirements of mechanical engineering. Accordingly, their perspectives and future development are discussed in this review.

Relation between the particle size and release characteristics of aromatic melamine microcapsules in functional textile applications

The relation between the particle size and release characteristics of aromatic microcapsules with a melamine resin shell in functional textile applications have been investigated. Firstly, the microcapsules are characterized based on their Fourier transform infrared spectra, encapsulation efficiencies, particle size distributions, optical images, and scanning electron microscopy images. The impregnation performances of the microcapsules have been initially evaluated using image analysis. Subsequently, the impregnation efficiency and broken release characteristics are semi-quantitatively analyzed using solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The analysis results show that the highest impregnation efficiency and broken release intensity could be observed when the microcapsule size was similar to the fiber diameter (25–30 μm). Eventually, the sustained release of the microcapsules over a period of 2400 h was evaluated using the weighing calculation method, and the trends were studied using the Peppas model. It was found that the microcapsule release rate slowly and continuously decreased with time, and the release rates significantly increased with the decrease in microcapsule particle size. Thus, it could be concluded that the large microcapsules exhibited better leak tightness than the small microcapsules, whereas the small microcapsules exhibited faster sustained release rates.

The relation between the particle size and release characteristics of aromatic microcapsules with a melamine resin shell in functional textile applications have been investigated.

The Fabrication of Fragrance Microcapsules and Their Sustained and Broken Release Behavior

Their controlled release property is the most important feature of functional microcapsules and carriers. In this work, melamine resin shell fragrance microcapsules were fabricated in a non-ionic system, and their chemical structure, particle size, and morphology were analyzed. The sustained release property of the prepared microcapsules over 2400 h was studied with a weighing calculation method, and based on the fitting results, the release rate trend was consistent with the Peppas model (y = 100 - 2.30t^0.3213). Furthermore, the sustained and broken release behavior of the microcapsules in impregnated fabric samples were investigated for the first time by our proposed Solid Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (SPME-GC-MS) method. The qualitative and quantitative analysis results showed that the middle and base note compositions were outstanding in the sustained release state, and the top note showed more advantages in the broken release state. In addition, it was found that the characteristic peak species and intensities of the sample finished with the microcapsules were more similar to pure essence oil than the sample finished by traditional methods, suggesting that the prepared microcapsules showed an excellent odor recovery and strength.
