Recent Advances in Hydrogel Technology in Delivering Mesenchymal Stem Cell for Osteoarthritis Therapy

Osteoarthritis (OA), a chronic joint disease affecting over 500 million individuals globally, is characterized by the destruction of articular cartilage and joint inflammation. Conventional treatments are insufficient for repairing damaged joint tissue, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), with their potential for differentiation and self-renewal, hold great promise as a treatment for OA. However, challenges such as MSC viability and apoptosis in the ischemic joint environment hinder their therapeutic effectiveness. Hydrogels with biocompatibility and degradability offer a three-dimensional scaffold that support cell viability and differentiation, making them ideal for MSC delivery in OA treatment. This review discusses the pathological features of OA, the properties of MSCs, the challenges associated with MSC therapy, and methods for hydrogel preparation and functionalization. Furthermore, it highlights the advantages of hydrogel-based MSC delivery systems while providing insights into future research directions and the clinical potential of this approach.

Multi-Technique Assessment of Chelators-Loaded PVA-Borax Gel-like Systems Performance in Cleaning of Stone Contaminated with Copper Corrosion Products

Currently, one of the most important challenges for the conservation of stone artworks is the removal of metal corrosion products on their surfaces. Traditional cleaning methods, which typically involve the application of aqueous solutions containing chelating agents capable of complexing these metal ions, have shown some weaknesses. These weaknesses become apparent when such methods are applied to statues and other vertical surfaces or when aiming to limit the cleaning process to a specific area with controlled application times. Furthermore, the porosity of the stone surface plays a role concerning the cleaning efficiency. To address these issues, chelating agents can be incorporated into gel-like materials. This study is a proof of concept to evaluate the cleaning efficacy of various gel formulations composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), borax (B), and agarose (AG), loaded with two chelators: ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and potassium sodium tartrate (PST or Rochelle salt). Three types of carbonate stones (travertine, Lecce stone, and Carrara marble) characterized by different porosities were artificially stained with copper sulphates and treated with the different PVA-B-AG formulations. The effectiveness of the treatment was directly monitored on the stones using a multi-technique approach that included scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and non-invasive portable nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Additionally, the rheological properties of the gels were investigated, and the Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (FTIR ATR) was used to analyse the chemical structure of the gel before and after treatment, aiming to understand the changes induced by the cleaning process.

Tailoring the properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) "twin-chain" gels via sebacic acid decoration

HYPOTHESIS

The development of gels capable to adapt and act at the interface of rough surfaces is a central topic in modern science for Cultural Heritage preservation. To overcome the limitations of solvents or polymer solutions, commonly used in the restoration practice, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) "twin-chain" polymer networks (TC-PNs) have been recently proposed. The properties of this new class of gels, that are the most performing gels available for Cultural Heritage preservation, are mostly unexplored. This paper investigates how chemical modifications affect gels' structure and their rheological behavior, producing new gelled systems with enhanced and tunable properties for challenging applications, not restricted to Cultural Heritage preservation.

EXPERIMENTS

In this study, the PVA-TC-PNs structural and functional properties were changed by functionalization with sebacic acid into a new class of TC-PNs. Functionalization affects the porosity and nanostructure of the network, changing its uptake/release of fluids and favoring the uptake of organic solvents with various polarity, a crucial feature to boost the versatility of TC-PNs in practical applications.

FINDINGS

The functionalized gels exhibited unprecedented performances during the cleaning of contemporary paintings from the Peggy Gugghenheim collection (Venice), whose restoration with traditional solvents and swabs would be difficult to avoid possible disfigurements to the painted layers. These results candidate the functionalized TC-PNs as a new, highly promising class of gels in art preservation.

Bacterial Nanocellulose Hydrogel for the Green Cleaning of Copper Stains from Marble

Cultural heritage stone materials frequently experience significant discoloration induced by copper corrosion products, especially calcareous stones associated with bronze or copper statues and architectural elements. This alteration originates from the corrosion of unprotected copper, resulting in the formation of various Cu minerals and the migration of soluble ions to adjacent stone materials. Traditional cleaning methods involve mechanical, chemical, and laser techniques, which are generally time-consuming, costly, not ecological, or can possibly damage original materials. The loading of highly effective chelating agents, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), into hydrogels has recently been exploited. However, the preference for synthetic hydrogels has been prominent until now, although they lack renewability and biodegradability and require high costs. This study explores for the first time the potential to clean copper corrosion with bacterial nanocellulose (BC) loaded with EDTA as a biologically based, sustainable, and biodegradable hydrogel. The BC hydrogel was characterised by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), simultaneous thermal analysis (TG-DSC), and tensile testing. It revealed a nano-fibrous structure with high crystallinity and purity and mechanical properties suitable for cultural heritage applications. The EDTA-loaded hydrogel effectively removed copper stains from marble after 120 min of application. Micro-Raman and colorimetric analyses assessed the cleaning efficacy. The study introduces bacterial nanocellulose as a green and effective alternative for heritage conservation, aligning with sustainable methodologies in stone conservation.

Engineering of PVA/PVP Hydrogels for Agricultural Applications

Hydrogels have gained significant popularity in agricultural applications in terms of minimizing waste and mitigating the negative environmental impact of agrochemicals. This review specifically examines the utilization of environmentally friendly, shapable hydrogels composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in various casings for crop protection against different pests, fertilizing, and watering. To activate their effectiveness, PVA/PVP hydrogels were loaded with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic environmentally friendly pesticides, namely hydrogen peroxide (HP), the essential oil thymol, and urea as a fertilizer, either separately or in combination. This review covers various physical and chemical approaches used for loading, shaping, and controlling the release profiles of pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, it explores the evaluation of the chemical composition, structure, classification, rheology, and morphology of the hydrogels as well as their impact on the thermal stability of the encapsulated pesticides and fertilizer, followed by biological tests. These hydrogels significantly contribute to the stabilization and controlled release of essential nutrients and biocides for plants, while maintaining excellent biocidal and fertilizing properties as well as sustainability characteristics. By shedding light on the latest insights into the concepts, applications, and results of these hydrogels, this review demonstrates their immense potential for widespread future use in agriculture.

Sponge-like Cryogels from Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation: Structure, Porosity, and Diffusional Gel Properties

Macroporous gels find application in several scientific fields, ranging from art restoration to wastewater filtration or cell entrapment. In this work, two-component sponge-like cryogels are challenged to assess their cleaning performances and to investigate how pores size and connectivity affect physico-chemical properties. The gels were obtained through a freeze-thaw process, exploiting a spontaneous polymer-polymer phase-separation occurring in the pre-gel solution. During the freezing step, a highly hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol (H-PVA) forms the hydrogel walls. The secondary components, namely a partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol (L-PVA) or polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), act as modular porogens, being partially extracted during gel washing. H-PVA/L-PVA and H-PVA/PVP mixtures were studied by confocal laser scanning microscopy to unveil sols and gels morphology at the micron-scale, while small angle X-ray scattering was used to get insights about characteristic dimensions at the nanoscale. The gelation mechanism was investigated through rheology measurements, and the characteristic exponents were compared to De Gennes' scaling laws gathered from percolation. In the field of art conservation, these sponge-like gels are ideal systems for the cleaning of artistic painted surfaces. Their interconnected pores allow the diffusion of cleaning fluids at the painted interface, facilitating dirt uptake and/or detachment. This study uncovered a direct relationship linking a gel's cleaning performance to its apparent tortuosity. These findings can pave the way to fine-tuning systems with enhanced cleaning abilities, not restricted to the restoration of irreplaceable priceless works of art, but with possible application in diverse research fields.

Nanostructured bio-based castor oil organogels for the cleaning of artworks

HYPOTHESIS

Organic solvents are often used for cleaning highly water-sensitive artifacts in modern/contemporary art. Due to the toxicity of most solvents, confining systems must be formulated to use these fluids in a safe and controlled way. We propose here castor oil (CO) organogels, obtained thorough cost-effective sustainable polyurethane crosslinking. This methodology is complementary to previously demonstrated hydrogels, when conservators opt for organic solvents over aqueous formulations.

EXPERIMENTS

The gels were characterized via Small-angle Neutron Scattering and rheology before and after swelling in two organic solvents commonly adopted in cleaning paintings. The removal of a photo-aged acrylic-ketonic varnish was evaluated under visible and ultraviolet light, and with FTIR 2D imaging.

FINDINGS

The new gels are dry systems that can be easily stored and loaded with solvents before use. Their nanoscale organization, viscoelasticity and cleaning action are controlled changing the amount of crosslinking, the polymeric backbone, and the loaded solvents. The fluids are confined in the nanosized polymeric mesh of the gels, which are highly retentive, granting controlled release over delicate paint layers, and transparent, allowing monitoring of the cleaning process. These features, along with their sustainable synthesis, candidate the CO organogels as feasible solutions for cultural heritage preservation, expanding the palette of advanced tools for conservators over traditional thickeners.

Mapping hierarchical networks of poly(vinyl alcohol)/cellulose nanofiber composite hydrogels via viscoelastic probes

Discriminating the roles of different networks in the multiply cross-linked hydrogels is vital to optimize their overall performance. Poly(vinyl alcohol)/cellulose nanofiber composite hydrogels were used as template for the study. Three types of characteristic networks, including chemical network cross-linked with boronic ester bonds, physical network cross-linked with microcrystallites, and coexistence of these two networks, were constructed in the system, and the viscoelastic responses were used to detect the characteristic relaxation behavior of those networks. The physical network is more sensitive to stress-induced deformation, whereas the chemical network more sensitive to strain-induced one. The former has lower level of viscous dissipation and higher level of elastic storage as compared to the latter, and dominates linear viscoelasticity of hydrogels as the two networks coexist. Their synergistic effect can be well defined by the scaling behavior of hysteretic work. This work proposes an interesting method of probing networks in the multiply cross-linked hydrogels.

Application and Monitoring of Oxidative Alginate–Biocide Hydrogels for Two Case Studies in “The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera”

The removal of biological colonization on building materials of cultural heritage is a difficult challenge, as the treatment must completely eliminate the biological patina without altering the treated substrate and possibly delaying new colonization. With the aim of searching for systems to minimize the biocide impact on the substrate, the environment and the operators, different alginate–oxidizing biocide hydrogels were previously tested and optimized in the laboratory and here selected for application in situ. The churches “San Pietro Barisano” and “Madonna dei Derelitti”, located in the Sassi of Matera (UNESCO World Heritage Site in Basilicata region, Italy), were chosen as case studies. They differ in terms of both the environmental conditions and the microorganisms responsible for colonization. Colorimetric measurements and microscopic investigation proved the efficacy of biocide hydrogels in removing biopatinas and in restoring the original chromaticity of the selected treated surfaces of both sites. After the biocidal treatments, new protective acrylic coatings were applied to prevent recolonization and minimize the loss of material grains. Samples collected, immediately after and two years later, established the absence of biological colonization, demonstrating the long-term efficacy of the proposed restoration protocol.

Formation of Hydrogels Based on a Copolymer of N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and Glycidyl Methacrylate in the Presence of the Reaction Product of 1,3-Dimethylmidazolium Dimethylphosphate and Elemental Sulfur

The aim of the study is to search for a reaction that provides the possibility of tandem "one-pot" formation of polymer networks during radical copolymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and glycidyl methacrylate. It was shown that the addition of recently synthesized 1,3-dimethylimidazolium (phosphonooxy-)oligosulfanide makes it possible to obtain a cross-linked copolymer in one stage as a result of radical copolymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and glycidyl methacrylate with a molar ratio of monomers less than 1.4. The structure of the copolymerization products of N-vinyl-2-pyrroldione and glycidyl methacrylate formed in the presence of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium (phosphonooxy-)oligosulfanide was characterized by ¹H NMR, FTIR and MALDI spectroscopy. ¹H NMR spectroscopy revealed an interaction under moderate heating between glycidyl methacrylate and 1,3-dimethylimidazolium (phosphonooxy-)oligosulfanide, accompanied by the formation of a mixture of unsaturated products of complex structure, presumably acting as crosslinking agents. It is shown that when the molar ratio of N-vinyl-2-pyrroldione/glycidyl methacrylate comonomers is 0.89, a densely crosslinked copolymer is formed, capable of limited swelling in water with a velocity constant of 5.06 × 10^-2 min^-1 and an equilibrium degree of swelling of about 227%.

Preliminary Cleaning Approach with Alginate and Konjac Glucomannan Polysaccharide Gel for the Surfaces of East Asian and Western String Musical Instruments

The cleaning of string musical instruments is challenging due to the traditional finishing treatments used by the makers. Multilayered coating systems were applied to Western musical instruments, while the Nakdong technique was applied in East Asia. Furthermore, by restorations and performance, dust and grime were overlapped together with polishes, adhesives, and varnishes. Gel cleaning is important in the field of conservation because of the ability to selectively remove chemical and biological degradation products from the surface, minimizing the interactions with the inner layers. In this study, hydrogels based on sodium alginate (SA) and konjac glucomannan (KG) polysaccharides were applied on laboratory mock-ups of East Asian and Western instruments to test their ability to remove synthetic soiling and sweat from the surface. In particular, SA cross-linked with calcium cations and KG cross-linked with borate gels were used. To control the exposure of the cleaning solvent on the surface of mock-ups, the moisture content of the gels was determined. The effectiveness of removing synthetic contaminants was investigated by noninvasive analytical methods. Stereomicroscopy and colorimetry, together with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in reflection mode and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), were used to evaluate the cleaning efficacy. Overall, polysaccharide hydrogels resulted in promising cleaning systems on both smooth and rough surfaces of wood.

Non-Invasive Assessment of PVA-Borax Hydrogel Effectiveness in Removing Metal Corrosion Products on Stones by Portable NMR

The cleaning of buildings, statues, and artworks composed of stone materials from metal corrosion is an important topic in the cultural heritage field. In this work the cleaning effectiveness of a PVA-PEO-borax hydrogel in removing metal corrosion products from different porosity stones has been assessed by using a multidisciplinary and non-destructive approach based on relaxation times measurement by single-sided portable Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Scanning Electron Microscopy—Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Raman Spectroscopy. To this end, samples of two lithotypes, Travertine and Carrara marble, have been soiled by triggering acidic corrosion of some copper coins in contact with the stone surface. Then, a PVA-PEO-borax hydrogel was used to clean the stone surface. NMR data were collected in untreated, soiled with corrosion products, and hydrogel-cleaned samples. Raman spectroscopy was performed on PVA-PEO-borax hydrogel before and after cleaning of metal corrosion. Furthermore, the characterization of the dirty gel was obtained by SEM-EDS. The combination of NMR, SEM-EDS and Raman results suggests that the mechanism behind the hydrogel cleaning action is to trap heavy metal corrosion products, such as Cu²⁺ between adjacent boron ions cross-linked with PVA. Moreover, the PVA-PEO-borax hydrogel cleaning effectiveness depends on the stone porosity, being better in Carrara marble compared to Travertine.

Enhancement of dispersion stability of inorganic additives via poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) treatment geared to hydrogel applications

This study reports the preparation of poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) treated bentonite and clinoptilolite to prevent the agglomeration and sedimentation of these inorganic fillers during the preparation of hydrogel. For this purpose PSS treated fillers were prepared by using various techniques (dip and dry, hydrothermal, one-step ball milling and ultrasonication methods). The most suitable technique for preparing these PSS treated inorganic fillers (abbreviated as BP-dip and CP-dip) was the dip and dry method. BP-dip and CP-dip based polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA/PVP) composite hydrogels were prepared using the freeze/thawing method after the addition of one of BP-dip and CP-dip inorganic fillers in various amounts. The swelling properties, stability behaviors and Rhodamine B (RhB) adsorption of the composite hydrogels were studied. It was found that the swelling degrees of CP-dip and BP-dip based composite hydrogels with 25 mg of filler were higher than that of all other samples. The kinetic mechanism of RhB adsorption process and the related characteristic kinetic parameters were investigated by Pseudo kinetic models. The adsorption kinetics results for RhB adsorption were found best fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The maximum RhB adsorption capacity was determined to be for PVA/PVP-CP-dip25, which was 3.3 times higher than that of the unfilled PVA/PVP hydrogel.

Self-Shaping Microemulsion Gels for Cultural Relic Cleaning

Cleaning is a foundational and essential operation of protection and restoration of cultural relics, which is also the key step of follow-up works. To overcome the problems of uncontrollable diffusion of cleaning solvents and poor coverage of the cleaning solvent carriers on rough surfaces, here, we propose a strategy of using a self-shaping microemulsion gel that is prepared via emulsifying oleophilic solvents into the specific shear-thinning hydrogel structures. The gel can adaptively cover rough surfaces during the cleaning process coupled with avoidance of unnecessary diffusion of the cleaning solvents, and the mechanical reinforcement of in situ polymerized double-network gels enables its easy peeling off from the surfaces without leaving determinable residues. As a representative demonstration, Paraloid B72, a widely used material for the repair and reinforcement of cultural relics, is employed as a model discolored coating, which can be effectively removed from the rough surface of simulated cultural relics after treatment with the resulting gels. Convincingly, the strategy of constructing agarose/polyacrylamide hybrid double-network gels with shear-thinning and self-shaping performances for the cleaning of cultural relics not only improves the convenience and accuracy of operation but also exhibits an efficient cleaning effect, which will greatly expand the application of microemulsion gels in the cleaning of rough surfaces of cultural relics.

How Science Can Contribute to the Remedial Conservation of Cultural Heritage

Colloid science is contributing solutions to counteract the degradation of artifacts, favoring their transfer to future generations. Advanced materials such as nanoparticles, coatings, gels and microemulsions have been assessed in conservation, spanning from archeological sites to modern and contemporary art. We give an overview of the fundamental milestones and latest innovations in conservation science, targeting solutions and tools for remedial conservation based on green nanomaterials and hybrid systems. Future perspectives and outstanding challenges in this exciting field are then outlined.

Advanced Materials in Cultural Heritage Conservation

Cultural Heritage is a crucial socioeconomic resource; yet, recurring degradation processes endanger its preservation. Serendipitous approaches in restoration practice need to be replaced by systematically addressing conservation issues through the development of advanced materials for the preservation of the artifacts. In the last few decades, materials and colloid science have provided valid solutions to counteract degradation, and we report here the main highlights in the formulation and application of materials and methodologies for the cleaning, protection and consolidation of works of art. Several types of artifacts are addressed, from murals to canvas paintings, metal objects, and paper artworks, comprising both classic and modern/contemporary art. Systems, such as nanoparticles, gels, nanostructured cleaning fluids, composites, and other functional materials, are reviewed. Future perspectives are also commented, outlining open issues and trends in this challenging and exciting field.

Easy-to-Make Polymer Hydrogels by UV-Curing for the Cleaning of Acrylic Emulsion Paint Films

The cleaning of acrylic emulsion paint surfaces poses a great challenge in the conservation field, due to their high water sensitivity. In this article, we present easy-to-make polymer hydrogels, made by UV-photopolymerization, that show excellent cleaning properties. The formulation of hydrogels obtained by UV-curing and their performance as dry cleaners for acrylic paints was investigated. First, different hydrogel formulations based on functional acrylic monomers were used to formulate a series of UV cross-linked hydrogels by fast UV photopolymerization. Their effectiveness on surface dirt removal was investigated by SEM microscopy and colorimetry. The hydrogels showed excellent cleaning properties and controlled water release, and they still performed satisfactorily after several cleaning uses. The obtained UV-hydrogels were compared to the well-known agar gels, showing benefits in terms of reducing excess water. This article shows that easy-to-make UV-cured hydrogels are an efficient tool for the cleaning of surface dirt from water-sensitive paintings, overcoming the limits of traditional cleaning methods.

Single-Sided Portable NMR Investigation to Assess and Monitor Cleaning Action of PVA-Borax Hydrogel in Travertine and Lecce Stone

In this work, we investigated the potential of PVA-borax hydrogel for cleaning limestones and the dependence of the cleaning on the porosity of the rock and on the action time of the hydrogel treatment. Towards this goal, we used a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, developed for non-invasive and non-destructive applications on cultural heritage. T2-NMR parameters were quantified on different samples of Lecce stone and Travertine cut perpendicular (Pe) and parallel (Pa) to the bedding planes under different experimental conditions: untreated samples, treated with Paraloid B72 and cleaned with PVA-PEO-borax hydrogel applied for 4 min and 2 h. The T2 results suggest that the effectiveness of the cleaning strongly depended on the porosity of the stones. In Lecce stone, the hydrogel seemed to eliminate both the paramagnetic impurities (in equal measure with 4 min and 2 h treatment) and Paraloid B72. In Travertine Pe, characterized by a smaller pore size compared to Lecce stone, no significant effects were found regarding both the cleaning and the treatment with Paraloid B72. In Travertine Pa, characterized by a larger pore size than the other two samples, the hydrogel seemed to clean the paramagnetic agents (it worked better if applied for a longer time) but it did not appear to have any effect on Paraloid B72 removal.

Ultrasound-Stimulated PVA Microbubbles for Adhesive Removal from Cellulose-Based Materials: A Groundbreaking Low-Impact Methodology

In this work, we shed new light on ultrasound contrast agents applied to the field of cultural heritage as an invaluable fine-tune cleaning tool for paper artworks. In this context, one of the primary and challenging issues is the removal of modern adhesives from paper artifacts. Modern adhesives are synthetic polymers whose presence enhances paper degradation and worsens its optical features. A thorough analytical and high-spatial-resolution combined study was successfully performed to test the capability of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based microbubbles stimulated by a proper noninvasive 1 MHz ultrasound field exposure in removing these adhesives from paper surfaces, in the absence of volatile invasive and toxic chemicals and without damaging paper and/or leaving residues. We demonstrate that poly(vinyl alcohol)-shelled microbubbles are suitable for interacting with paper surfaces, targeting and boosting in a few minutes the nondamaging removal of adhesive particles from paper samples thanks to their peculiar shell composition together with their ultrasound dynamics.

Selective removal of over-paintings from "Street Art" using an environmentally friendly nanostructured fluid loaded in highly retentive hydrogels

HYPOTHESIS

The removal of over-paintings or graffiti is a priority for conservators and restorers. This operation is complex, especially when over-paintings lay on painted surfaces that must be preserved, as in the case of vandalism on street art, where the layers are usually chemically similar. Traditional methodologies often do not provide satisfactory results and pose health and eco-compatibility concerns. An alternative methodological approach based on an environmentally friendly nanostructured fluid loaded in a retentive hydrogel is here proposed.

EXPERIMENTS

Six paints (based on vinyl, acrylic and alkyd polymers) were selected and studied by means of attenuated total reflection - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The phase behavior of four alkyl carbonates (green, low-toxicity organic solvents) and a biodegradable nonionic surfactant in water was investigated with Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in order to formulate a novel nanostructured cleaning system. The developed system, which also includes 2-butanol and an alkyl glycoside hydrotrope, was loaded in highly retentive hydrogels and tested in the selective removal of over-paintings from laboratory mockups and from real pieces of street art.

FINDINGS

The selective and controlled removal of modern paints from substrates with similar chemical composition has been achieved using a specifically tailored NSF embedded in a retentive hydrogel. The proposed methodology and cleaning system provided excellent cleaning results, representing a new tool for the conservation of contemporary and, in particular, street art.

Fundamental Concepts of Hydrogels: Synthesis, Properties, and Their Applications

In the present review, we focused on the fundamental concepts of hydrogels-classification, the polymers involved, synthesis methods, types of hydrogels, properties, and applications of the hydrogel. Hydrogels can be synthesized from natural polymers, synthetic polymers, polymerizable synthetic monomers, and a combination of natural and synthetic polymers. Synthesis of hydrogels involves physical, chemical, and hybrid bonding. The bonding is formed via different routes, such as solution casting, solution mixing, bulk polymerization, free radical mechanism, radiation method, and interpenetrating network formation. The synthesized hydrogels have significant properties, such as mechanical strength, biocompatibility, biodegradability, swellability, and stimuli sensitivity. These properties are substantial for electrochemical and biomedical applications. Furthermore, this review emphasizes flexible and self-healable hydrogels as electrolytes for energy storage and energy conversion applications. Insufficient adhesiveness (less interfacial interaction) between electrodes and electrolytes and mechanical strength pose serious challenges, such as delamination of the supercapacitors, batteries, and solar cells. Owing to smart and aqueous hydrogels, robust mechanical strength, adhesiveness, stretchability, strain sensitivity, and self-healability are the critical factors that can identify the reliability and robustness of the energy storage and conversion devices. These devices are highly efficient and convenient for smart, light-weight, foldable electronics and modern pollution-free transportation in the current decade.

Electrospun Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Gelatin and Cellulose Acetate Bi-Layer Scaffold Loaded with Gentamicin as Possible Wound Dressing

Acceleration of wound healing can be achieved with the use of wound dressings. Through the electrospinning technique, a polymeric scaffold composed of two layers was processed: a gelatin and polyvinylpyrrolidone layer with gentamicin, and a second layer of cellulose acetate. The conditions for the electrospinning process were standardized for voltage parameters, feed flow and the distance from the injector to the collector. Once the values of the main variables for the electrospinning were optimized, a three-hour processing time was established to allow the separation of the material from the collector. The obtained material was characterized by observations on scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis; contact angle measurement was performed to evaluate wettability properties, and antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated using the Kirby–Bauer test. The obtained fibers that form the bi-layer scaffold present diameters from 100 to 300 nm. The scaffold presents chemical composition, thermal stability, wettability characteristics and antibacterial activity that fulfill the proposal from this study, based on obtaining a scaffold that could be used as a drug delivery vehicle and a wound dressing material.

Cryostructuring of Polymeric Systems. 55. Retrospective View on the More than 40 Years of Studies Performed in the A.N.Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds with Respect of the Cryostructuring Processes in Polymeric Systems

The processes of cryostructuring in polymeric systems, the techniques of the preparation of diverse cryogels and cryostructurates, the physico-chemical mechanisms of their formation, and the applied potential of these advanced polymer materials are all of high scientific and practical interest in many countries. This review article describes and discusses the results of more than 40 years of studies in this field performed by the researchers from the A.N.Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds, Russian Academy of Sciences-one of the key centers, where such investigations are carried out. The review includes brief historical information, the description of the main effects and trends characteristic of the cryostructuring processes, the data on the morphological specifics inherent in the polymeric cryogels and cryostructurates, and examples of their implementation for solving certain applied tasks.

Nonionic Surfactants for the Cleaning of Works of Art: Insights on Acrylic Polymer Films Dewetting and Artificial Soil Removal

The use of nanostructured fluids (NSFs), that is, micellar solutions and microemulsions, in art conservation is often associated with cleaning purposes as the removal of polymeric coatings and/or soil from artistic surfaces. In both cases, the use of NSFs grants significant improvements over the use of traditional cleaning techniques that employ neat unconfined organic solvents, water, or aqueous solutions. The study of the nature and properties of surfactants present in NSF formulations is important to boost the effectiveness of these systems in applicative contexts and in the search of innovative and highly performing amphiphiles. This work reports on the methoxy-pentadeca(oxyethylene) dodecanoate (MPD) surfactant in two different NSFs, whose utilization in conservation of cultural heritage is new. Its effectiveness is compared to the conventional nonionic amphiphiles used in conservation practice, as pentadeca(oxyethylene) dodecyl ether, for the cleaning of poly(ethyl methacrylate/methyl acrylate) 70:30, p(EMA/MA), and artificially soiled surfaces. The mechanism, through which NSFs interact with polymeric coatings or soiled surfaces, was investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, photographic observation, contact angle, surface tension measurements, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The results highlighted the superior MPD's performance, both in inducing polymer removal and in detaching the soil from coated surfaces. At the microscale, the cleaning involves dewetting-like processes, where the polymer or the soil oily phase is detached from the surface and coalesce into separated droplets. This can be accounted by considering the different surface tensions and the different adsorption mechanisms of MPD with respect to ordinary nonionic surfactants (likely due to the methyl capping of the polar head chain and to the presence of the ester group between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts of the MPD surfactant molecule), showing how a tiny change in the surfactant architecture can lead to important differences in the cleaning capacity. Overall, this paper provides a detailed description of the mechanism and the kinetics involved in the NSFs cleaning process, opening new perspectives on simple formulations that are able to target at a specific substance to be removed. This is of utmost importance in the conservation of irreplaceable works of art.

Twin-chain polymer hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) as new advanced tool for the cleaning of modern and contemporary art

Conservation of our cultural heritage is fundamental for conveying to future generations our culture, traditions, and ways of thinking and behaving. Cleaning art, in particular modern/contemporary paintings, with traditional tools could be risky and impractical, particularly on large collections of important works to be transferred to future generations. We report on advanced cleaning systems, based on twin-chain polymer networks made of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) chains, semiinterpenetrated (semi-IPN) with PVA of lower molecular weight (L-PVA). Interpenetrating L-PVA causes a change from gels with oriented channels to sponge-like semi-IPNs with disordered interconnected pores, conferring different gel (and solvent) dynamics. These features grant residue-free, time efficient cleaning capacity and effective dirt capture, defeating risks for the artifact, making possible a safer treatment of important collections, unconceivable with conventional methods. We report as an example the conservation of Jackson Pollock's masterpieces, cleaned in a controlled way, safety and selectivity with unprecedented performance.

Polyvinyl alcohol based hydrogels as new tunable materials for application in the cultural heritage field

Hydrogel-based cleaning of paper artworks is an increasingly widespread process in the cultural heritage field. However, the search for tuned (compatible, highly retentive and not perishable) hydrogels is a challenging open question. In this paper, a complete characterization of chemical hydrogels based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) crosslinked with telechelic PVA and their remarkable performances as gels for cleaning paper artworks are reported. The rheological properties, porosity, water content of these gels were determined and analyzed as a function of the components concentration during synthesis. Due mechanical and retentive properties, the reported gels are optimum candidates for paper cleaning applications. The efficacy of these PVA-based gels has been demonstrated applying them on the surface of the sheets of several paper artworks, and characterizing the samples before and after the cleaning process by means of a multidisciplinary approach involving spectroscopic and chromatographic tests.

Maximizing Contact of Supersoft Bottlebrush Networks with Rough Surfaces To Promote Particulate Removal

Efficient removal of particulates from a rough surface with a soft material through a "press and peel" method (i.e., an adhesion and release approach) depends on good conformal contact at the interface; a material should be sufficiently soft to maximize contact with a particle while also conforming to rough surface features to clean the entire substrate surface. Here, we investigate the use of bottlebrush networks-extremely soft elastomers composed of macromolecules with polymeric side chains-as materials for cleaning model substrates of varying roughness. Formed through free-radical polymerization of mono- and dimethacrylate functionalized polysiloxanes, these solvent-free supersoft elastomers exhibit moduli comparable to those of solvated gels, allowing for a lower moduli regime of elastomers to be used in contact experiments than previously possible. By varying the macromonomer to cross-linker ratio, we study the effect of modulus on conformal contact and cleaning for materials that are as soft as gels while minimizing/negating physical and/or chemical concerns that using a traditional material may involve (e.g., changes in component concentrations, solvent evaporation, and syneresis). We study cleaning efficacy by quantifying the conformal contact between soft materials and rough substrates via a contact adhesion-based measurement. These results give insight into the correlation between shear modulus and conformal contact with surfaces of varying feature height. Not only does a decrease in shear modulus leads to improved conformal contact with rough surfaces, but also it facilitates adhesion to particulates situated on the rough surface, thus aiding removal. We highlight this property control with a case study illustrating the removal of an artificial soil mixture from a rough, acrylic surface via peeling rather than rubbing, which can cause damage to delicate surfaces.

Immobilized Enzymes on Gold Nanoparticles: From Enhanced Stability to Cleaning of Heritage Textiles

Enzyme-based treatments are used in heritage conservation for the effective removal of glues and other damaging organic layers from the surfaces of historic and artistic works. Despite their potential, however, the application of enzymatic treatments is currently limited because of their poor efficiency and low operational and environmental stability. We demonstrate the use of α-amylase immobilized on gold nanoparticles to improve the efficacy of enzymatic treatments enhancing both the reactivity and the stability of the formulations. Gold nanoparticles coated with α-amylase exhibit significant advantages compared to free enzymes. We report up to 5× greater resistance to environmental changes, up to 2× higher efficacy toward removal of starch-based glues from textiles and deeper penetration through the fibers, without causing damage or inducing salt precipitation. These results offer exciting prospects for the development of enzymatic formulations, both for heritage conservation and the wider application of enzymes, such as in medicine, the detergent industry, and green chemistry.
