Photocatalytic antibacterial agents based on inorganic semiconductor nanomaterials: a review

Microbial contamination and antibiotic pollution have threatened public health and it is important to develop a rapid and safe sterilization strategy. Among various disinfection strategies, photocatalytic antibacterial methods have drawn increasing attention due to their efficient disinfection performances and environment-friendly properties. Although there are some reviews about bacterial disinfection, specific reviews on photocatalysis focused on inorganic semiconductor nanomaterials are rarely reported. Herein, we present a systematic summary of recent disinfection developments based on inorganic nanomaterials (including metal oxides, sulfides, phosphides, carbon materials, and corresponding heterostructures) over the past five years. Moreover, key factors and challenges for inorganic nanomaterial-based photocatalytic disinfection are outlined, which holds great potential for future photocatalytic antibacterial applications.

Principle of CoS2/ZnIn2S4 heterostructure effect and its mechanism of action in a visible light-catalyzed antibacterial process

The development of visible-light-driven catalytic antimicrobial technology is a significant challenge. In this study, heterojunctions were constructed for the appropriate modification of semiconductor-based photocatalysts. A simple hydrothermal method was used for material reconstruction, and smaller CoS2 nanoparticles were deposited and in situ grown on two-dimensional nanoflower-like ZnIn2S4 carriers to form CoS2/ZnIn2S4 (CS/ZIS) Schottky heterojunctions. Systematic study via characterization techniques and density functional theory calculations indicated that the excellent photocatalytic activity of CS/ZIS stemmed from the solid interfacial coupling between the two solid-phase materials. These materials acted as co-catalysts to increase the number of active reaction sites, enhance charge transfer, drive unidirectional electron movement, and improve charge separation efficiency, which effectively facilitated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The optimized CS/ZIS heterojunction exhibited excellent performance for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic matter and inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) compared with the ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst. Moreover, the antibacterial mechanism of the heterojunction photocatalyst and the extent of damage to the cell membrane and internal cytoplasm were explored by performing various assays. It was demonstrated that superoxide radicals are the predominant active species and multiple ROS act together to cause oxidative stress damage and cell inactivation.

Surface functionalized silver-doped ZnO nanocatalyst: a sustainable cooperative catalytic, photocatalytic and antibacterial platform for waste treatment

The different dyes used and discharged in industrial settings and microbial pathogenic issues have raised serious concerns about the content of bodies of water and the impact that dyes and microbes have on the environment and human health. Efficient treatment of contaminated water is thus a major challenge that is of great interest to researchers around the world. In the present work, we have fabricated functionalized silver-doped ZnO nanoparticles (Ag-doped ZnO NPs) via a hydrothermal method for wastewater treatment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the doping of Ag with ZnO NPs, and X-ray diffractometry analysis showed a decreasing trend in the crystallite size of the synthesized ZnO NPs with increased Ag concentration. Field emission scanning electron microscopy study of pure ZnO NPs and Ag-doped ZnO NPs revealed nanocrystal aggregates with mixed morphologies, such as hexagonal and rod-shaped structures. Distribution of Ag on the ZnO lattice is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis. ZnO NPs with 4 wt% Ag doping showed a maximum degradation of ∼95% in 1.5 h of malachite green dye (80 mg L-1) under visible light and ∼85% in 4 h under dark conditions. Up to five successive treatment cycles using the 4 wt% Ag-doped ZnO NP nanocatalyst confirmed its reusability, as it was still capable of degrading ∼86% and 82% of the dye under visible light and dark conditions, respectively. This limits the risk of nanotoxicity and aids the cost-effectiveness of the overall treatment process. The synthesized NPs showed antibacterial activity in a dose-dependent manner. The zone of inhibition of the Ag-doped ZnO NPs was higher than that of the pure ZnO NPs for all doping content. The studied Ag-doped ZnO NPs thus offer a significant eco-friendly route for the effective treatment of water contaminated with synthetic dyes and fecal bacterial load.

Nano zinc oxide decorated latex drainage: A promising antibacterial material prevent retrograde infection associated with drainage

Surgical site infections (SSI) represent a considerable burden for healthcare systems. Studies show retrograde infection of the drainage tube is an important cause of surgical site infection. To this end, Surgeons work in various ways to reduce the incidence of retrograde infections. Fast progress in nanoscience and nanotechnology is revolutionizing the field of medicine to improve the quality of life due to the myriad of applications stemming from their unique properties, including the antibacterial activity against pathogens. Herein, we investigate the antibacterial properties of a novel nanomaterial composed of nano zinc oxide-decorated latex drainages. These materials were produced by the hydrothermal method and characterized through field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and DLS (Dynamic light scattering techniques). Then inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements showed that nano zinc oxide on the surface of the latex drainages showed a gradient release process. The antimicrobial activity of nano zinc oxide -decorated latex drainage was evaluated against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, the main bacteriological agent in the retrograde infection associated with drainage. The results showed that slices and rods nano zinc oxide (SAR-ZnO) drainage tubes had the best antibacterial properties both in vivo and in vitro. In addition, the cell viability assay demonstrated that nano zinc oxide-decorated latex drainages exerted good biocompatibility. Therefore, SAR-ZnO drainage tubes can be a perfect nanomaterial against the retrograde infection associated with drainage.

3D Printed Piezoelectric Wound Dressing with Dual Piezoelectric Response Models for Scar-Prevention Wound Healing

During the long process of wound defect repair, the bioelectric stimulation around the wound gradually decreases, which can cause gradual down-regulation of the wound healing cascade response, disordered deposition of collagen fibers, and abnormal remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM). All these combined will eventually result in delayed wound healing and scar tissue formation. To resolve these issues, a novel ZnO nanoparticles modified PVDF/sodium alginate (SA) piezoelectric hydrogel scaffold (ZPFSA) is prepared by 3D printing technology. The prepared ZPFSA scaffold has dual piezoelectric response models, mainly consisting of vertical swelling and horizontal friction, which can be used to simulate and amplify endogenous bioelectricity to promote wound healing and prevent scar formation. Compared with other composite scaffolds, ZPFSA 0.5 (contain 0.5% ZnO nanoparticles) exhibits good biocompatibility, excellent antimicrobial properties, and stable piezoelectric response, so that it can significantly accelerate the wound healing and effectively prevent the scar tissue formation within 2 weeks thanks to the cascade regulation in wound healing, including cell migration, vascularization, collagen remodeling, and the expression of related growth factors. The proposed dual piezoelectric response models will provide a new solution to accelerate wound healing process, prevent scar formation, and extend new application range of piezoelectric materials in wound dressing.

Photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of green synthesized Ag doped MgO nanocomposites towards environmental sustainability

The utilization of MgO nanoparticles (NPs) for Photocatalytic and antimicrobial activities has gained lots of attention in recent years. Since silver is an expensive material, it's of interest to check that doping of very small concentration of silver will increase the pollutant degradation efficiency of composites. Here Aloe Vera plant extract was used for synthesis of MgO, Ag NPs and Ag/MgO-nanocomposites (NCs). Green synthesized NPs and NCs were confirmed by using different techniques like UV-Vis, BET, TGA, FTIR, PL, XRD (optical, functional, Thermal, Structural) EDX, TEM, SEM, XPS, EIS and EPR (morphological, elemental, photoelectrical and ROS) studies respectively. Then NPs and NCs were applied for the photocatalytic activity of methylene blue (MB), phenol and antimicrobial studies of E. coli bacteria. Ag/MgO-NCs showed 90.18% dye and 80.67% phenol degradation in 120 min which killed E. Coli pathogenic bacteria in 25 min under solar light irradiations. In disk diffusion methods, it inactivates 24 mm area of bacterial cell growth. Thus, among these green synthesized NPs and NCs, Ag/MgO-NCs exhibited enhanced photocatalytic and antimicrobial activities.

Viscosity Simulation of Glass Microfiber and an Unusual Air Filter with High-Efficiency Antibacterial Functionality Enabled by ZnO/Graphene-Modified Glass Microfiber

The current global pandemic of new coronary pneumonia clearly reveals the importance of developing highly efficient filtration and fast germicidal performance of multifunctional air filters. In this study, a novel air filter with a controllable morphology based on the rod-like to flower-like zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles loaded on glass microfiber was prepared by one-step microwave rapid synthesis. The multifunctional air filter shows the following special functions: the 10 mg·L^-1 organic pollutant solution RhB was completely degraded within 2 h under a 500 W xenon lamp, and also 99% of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were inactivated under a 60 W light-emitting diode lamp. Furthermore, after introducing the controllable morphology zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles, the filtration efficiency of the multifunctional air filter was also kept at the same level (99.8%) as the one without any addition, indicating no loss of high-efficiency filtration while obtaining the rapid bactericidal function. The rapid antibacterial principle of the multifunctional air filter has also been proposed through the UV-vis spectroscopies, photoluminescence, and electron-spin resonance spectrum. The zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles tightly coated on the glass microfiber surface could increase the active sites by changing the morphology of zinc oxide and, in the meantime, promote the separation of zinc oxide photo-generated electron-hole pairs to improve the rapid sterilization ability of the multifunctional air filters. In addition, an empirical formula to evaluate the relationship between the composition, viscosity, and viscosity modulus of glass microfiber was proposed by testing the viscosity of glass microfiber composed of 14 different compositions at 1300 and 1400 °C, which can be used as a criterion to evaluate the production technology of glass microfiber filters.

Progress on photocatalytic semiconductor hybrids for bacterial inactivation

Due to its use of green and renewable energy and negligible bacterial resistance, photocatalytic bacterial inactivation is to be considered a promising sterilization process. Herein, we explore the relevant mechanisms of the photoinduced process on the active sites of semiconductors with an emphasis on the active sites of semiconductors, the photoexcited electron transfer, ROS-induced toxicity and interactions between semiconductors and bacteria. Pristine semiconductors such as metal oxides (TiO₂ and ZnO) have been widely reported; however, they suffer some drawbacks such as narrow optical response and high photogenerated carrier recombination. Herein, some typical modification strategies will be discussed including noble metal doping, ion doping, hybrid heterojunctions and dye sensitization. Besides, the biosafety and biocompatibility issues of semiconductor materials are also considered for the evaluation of their potential for further biomedical applications. Furthermore, 2D materials have become promising candidates in recent years due to their wide optical response to NIR light, superior antibacterial activity and favorable biocompatibility. Besides, the current research limitations and challenges are illustrated to introduce the appealing directions and design considerations for the future development of photocatalytic semiconductors for antibacterial applications.

Synthesis of Nanocomposites of V₂O5©Selenium Nanoparticles and Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Antimicrobial Activity

The authors report the preparation of the nanocomposite comprising of vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) and selenium (Se) nanoparticles and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (V₂O₅@Se NPs/MWCNTs). Since Se NPs possesses extraordinary physicochemical properties including larger surface area with higher adsorption capacity, V₂O₅ NPs were adsorbed onto Se NPs surface through physisorption process (designated as V₂O₅@Se NPs). The nanocomposite synthesized hydrothermally was evaluated for its antimicrobial activity. The morphology and microstructure of the nanocomposite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) were employed to analyze the spectral properties of nanocomposite. The microbicidal efficacy of nanocomposite was tested against Gram-negative (G-)ZGram-positive (G+) bacteria and fungus. This is the first report on the synthesis of V₂O₅@Se NPs/MWCNTs nanocomposites by chemical method that showed microbicidal effect on micro-organisms. The thiol (-SH) units facilitates the enrichment of V₂O₅@Se NPs onto MWCNTs surface. Ultimately, it reflects on the significant antimicrobial activity of V₂O₅@Se NPs/MWCNTs.

Continuous photocatalysis via photo-charging and dark-discharging for sustainable environmental remediation: Performance, mechanism, and influencing factors

Continuous photocatalysis via photo-charging and dark-discharging presents a paradigm shift in conventional photocatalysis with the requirement of continuous illumination to maintain the catalytic activity. This is expected to meet the ever-increasing demand for sustainable development of energy and environment driven by natural day-night cycles. Substantial advances in continuous photocatalysis for various environmental applications under light-dark cycles have been witnessed during the last decade. However, there lacks a systematic and critical review on basic but important information of continuous photocatalysis for environmental remediation, challenging robust scientific progress of this technology towards potential practical use. Here, the general description of continuous photocatalysis involving energy storage mechanisms (hole and electron storage) and characterizations (electron storage behaviors, release behaviors and storage capacity) has been first introduced. Importantly, the remediation performance and mechanism of continuous photocatalysis for environmental applications are qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrated, including chemical pollutant oxidation and reduction, microbial pathogen inactivation, and multifunctional treatment. In addition, key factors influencing its remediation performance are analyzed, for the first time, from both operational and environmental views. The ample opportunities in the field of continuous photocatalysis for sustainable environmental remediation are also pointed out, calling for more efforts to fill current knowledge gaps in the future.

The synthesis and evaluation of the antitumor and antibacterial activity of two novel oxovanadium complexes

Two novel oxovanadium(IV) complexes ([VO(hntdtsc)(BPIP)] and [VO(hntdtsc)(MOPIP)] (hntdtsc = 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehydethiosemicarbazone, BPIP = 2-(4-bromophenyl)-imidazo[4,5- f]-1,10-phenanthroline, MOPIP = 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-imidazo[4,5- f]1,10-phenanthroline), are synthesized and characterized. Subsequently, the Methyl Thiazolyl Tetrazolium (MTT) assay is used to investigate the antitumor activity of the ligand and two complexes in vitro.The results indicate that both complexes could significantly inhibit selected tumor cells (SH-SY5Y, MCF-7, and SK-N-SH). In addition, the antibacterial activity of VO(hntdtsc)(BPIP) against Staphylococcus aureus is further investigated. Interestingly, VO(hntdtsc)(BPIP) can efficiently attenuate S. aureus growth and abrogate α-hemolysin secretion and biofilm formation. The plasmid DNA cleavage activity of both complexes is also investigated. The results suggest that supercoiled plasmid DNA is efficiently cleaved after treatment with each complex, which might contribute to the biological activity of these oxovanadium(IV) complexes.

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic inactivation of S. aureus in aqueous environment by hydrophilic zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles based on the interfacial electron transfer in S. aureus/ZnO composites

Waterborne diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms pose severe threats to human health. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) hold great potentials as an effective, economical and eco-friendly method for water disinfection, but the exact antimicrobial mechanism of ZnO NPs under visible-light illumination is still not clear. Herein, we investigate the visible-light-driven photocatalytic inactivation mechanism of amino-functionalized hydrophilic ZnO (AH-ZnO) NPs against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in aqueous environment from the perspective of electron transfer theory. The results show that the antibacterial effects of AH-ZnO NPs are dependent on the AH-ZnO NPs concentration and treatment time. The bulk ORP value and released Zn²⁺ concentration in AH-ZnO NPs solutions increase with AH-ZnO NPs concentration. The SEM and intracellular protein leakage results indicate that AH-ZnO NPs can adhere to S. aureus surface without causing obvious cell membrane disruption. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity and fluorescence lifetime of AH-ZnO NPs are remarkedly decreased after adding S. aureus, which confirms the electron transfer from S. aureus to AH-ZnO NPs. Moreover, the ΔPL intensity is closely correlated with the inactivation efficiency, demonstrating that the interfacial electron transfer in S. aureus/AH-ZnO NPs composites contributes to the antibacterial activity, which is speculated to disrupt the normal respiratory electron transfer chain of S. aureus, thereby causing intracellular ROS generation, cell membrane depolarization and eventually apoptosis-like death.

Emerging Trends in Nanomaterials for Antibacterial Applications

Around the globe, surges of bacterial diseases are causing serious health threats and related concerns. Recently, the metal ion release and photodynamic and photothermal effects of nanomaterials were demonstrated to have substantial efficiency in eliminating resistance and surges of bacteria. Nanomaterials with characteristics such as surface plasmonic resonance, photocatalysis, structural complexities, and optical features have been utilized to control metal ion release, generate reactive oxygen species, and produce heat for antibacterial applications. The superior characteristics of nanomaterials present an opportunity to explore and enhance their antibacterial activities leading to clinical applications. In this review, we comprehensively list three different antibacterial mechanisms of metal ion release, photodynamic therapy, and photothermal therapy based on nanomaterials. These three different antibacterial mechanisms are divided into their respective subgroups in accordance with recent achievements, showcasing prospective challenges and opportunities in clinical, environmental, and related fields.

Facile Synthesis of Thermo-Sensitive Composite Hydrogel with Well Dispersed Ag Nanoparticles for Application in Superior Antibacterial Infections

In this study, we have described a facile process for fabrication of multifunctional composite hydrogel, in which sodium alginate was subjected to cross-linking using Ca²⁺ derived from ZnO/CaCO₃/Ag composite nanospheres. The ZnO/CaCO₃/Ag composite nanospheres were prepared based on our previously reported AA-[Zn(OH)₄]^2- composite nanosphere reaction conducted with silver and calcium salt following hydrothermal method, that led to the disintegration and release of Ca²⁺ under acidic conditions for application as a cross-linking agentto catalyze reaction with sodium alginate. Ag nanoparticles were well-dispersed in the multifunctional composite hydrogel, exhibiting excellent antibacterial activity. Additionally, polydopamine (PDA) with photothermal effect was also added to obtain a multifunctional composite hydrogel, and this hydrogel showed photothermal conversion performance and facilitated the release of Ag⁺ to achieve the rapid antibacterial effect. Simultaneously, PDA NPs could scavenge free radicals and improve cell adhesion. All such features would promote wound healing. The potent antimicrobial activity of the prepared composite hydrogel was demonstrated in the mouse model of S. aureus infection, and biosafety of the hydrogel was confirmed by conducting histopathological examination in the mouse model. This type of multifunctional hydrogel wound dressing with photosensitive and antibacterial properties presents with broad applications and prospects in antibacterial treatment.

Transition metal oxide and chalcogenide-based nanomaterials for antibacterial activities: an overview

A new battle line is drawn where antibiotic misuse and mismanagement have made treatment of bacterial infection a thorny issue. It is highly desirable to develop active antibacterial materials for bacterial control and destruction without drug resistance. A large amount of effort has been devoted to transition metal oxide and chalcogenide (TMO&C) nanomaterials as possible candidates owing to their unconventional physiochemical, electronic and optical properties and feasibility of functional architecture assembly. This review expounds multiple TMO&C-based strategies to combat pathogens, opening up new possibilities for the design of simple, yet highly effective systems that are crucial for antimicrobial treatment. A special emphasis is placed on the multiple mechanisms of these nanoagents, including mechanical rupture, photocatalytic/photothermal activity, Fenton-type reaction, nanozyme-assisted effect, released metal ions and the synergistic action of TMO&C in combination with other antibacterial agents. The applications of TMO&C nanomaterials mostly in air/water purification and wound healing along with their bactericidal activities and mechanisms are also described. Finally, the contemporary challenges and trends in the development of TMO&C-based antibacterial strategies are proposed.

Dextran mediated MnFe2O4/ZnS magnetic fluorescence nanocomposites for controlled self-heating properties

Dextran mediated MnFe2O4/ZnS opto-magnetic nanocomposites with different concentrations of ZnS were competently synthesized adopting the co-precipitation method. The structural, morphological, magnetic, and optical properties of the nanocomposites were exhaustively characterized by XRD, HRTEM, FTIR, VSM techniques, and PL spectroscopy. XRD spectra demonstrate the existence of the cubic spinel phase of MnFe2O4 and the cubic zinc blend phase of ZnS in the nanocomposites. HRTEM images show the average crystallite size ranges of 15-21 nm for MnFe2O4 and 14-45 nm for ZnS. Investigation of the FTIR spectra reveals the incorporation of ZnS nanoparticles on the surface of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles by dint of biocompatible surfactant dextran. The nanocomposites exhibit both magnetic and photoluminescence properties. Photoluminescence analysis confirmed the redshift of the emission peaks owing to the trap states in the ZnS nanocrystals. The room temperature VSM analysis shows that the saturation magnetization and coercivity of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles initially increase then decrease with the increasing concentration of ZnS in the nanocomposite. The induction heating analysis shows that the presence of dextran enhances the self heating properties of the MnFe2O4/ZnS nanocomposites which can also be controlled by tailoring the concentration of the ZnS nanoparticles. These suggest that MnFe2O4/Dex/ZnS is a decent candidate for hyperthermia applications.

Development of novel BiOBr0.75I0.25 nanostructures with remarkably High dark phase bactericidal activities

Semiconductor materials with promising photocatalytic activities are being developed for numerous applications including their use in the development of antibacterial products. However, the light may not be available everywhere, which restrict the use of semiconductor photocatalytic materials in real applications. In this area, we report a novel nanostructure of BiOBr_0.75I_0.25 to show enormously high bactericidal activities even at dark. We used a solution based single step method at room temperature to produce highly porous and crystalline BiOBr_xI_1-x (x = 0-1) nanostructures. Next, the developed materials were thoroughly characterized by different analytical techniques, such as FESEM, XRD, XPS, etc. To evaluate the bactericidal activities Escherichia coli (gram-negative bacteria) and Bacillus subtilis (gram-positive bacteria) were selected. Interestingly we found that the solid solutions exhibited high potential towards both the bacteria and among them, BiOBr_0.75I_0.25 showed extremely high efficiencies even at dark. Due to their semiconductor behavior, the materials have shown higher activities in the presence of any light source. The knowledge about the behavior of these unique materials revels a new area of research and would certainly help to find out the solution for ever-increasing environmental issues.

A rapid green synthesis of Ag/AgCl-NC photocatalyst for environmental applications

The present study focuses on extract-mediated Ag nanoparticles (NPs), AgCl-NPs, and Ag/AgCl nanocomposites (NCs) as photocatalysts along with its antimicrobial and dye degradation activities. The synthesis of these NPs and NCs was performed by using Azadirachta indica plant fruit extract and analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy to confirm the synthesis and band gap of these NPs and NCs, X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine its size and crystalline nature. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to discern phytochemicals, responsible for the reduction and capping of the synthesized NCs. Scanning electron microscopy analysis (SEM), transmission electron microscopy analysis (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis were performed to validate the morphology and presence of silver and chloride percentage in the composites. Later, these NPs and NCs were used for their potential role in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus of human pathogen. The prepared Ag/AgCl-NCs exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activities in comparison with pure Ag and AgCl nanomaterials. However, green-synthesized NPs and NCs played dual roles as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent in various biomedical and industrial sectors. Moreover, we found that it might be a hot research in many other environmental applications in upcoming days.

Nanofibers of polycaprolactone containing hydroxyapatite doped with aluminum/vanadate ions for wound healing applications

The combined doping of aluminum and vanadate ions into the structure of hydroxyapatite encapsulated in polycaprolactone nanofibers might represent a simple approach for wound dressing design.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis and Characterization of Solar-Light-Active Copper–Vanadium Oxide: Evaluation of Antialgal and Dye Degradation Activity

In this work, solar-light-active copper–vanadium oxide (Cu-VO) was synthesized by a simple microwave method and characterized by FESEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–Vis/near-infrared (NIR), and FT-IR spectroscopy. Antialgal and dye degradation activities of Cu-VO were investigated against Microcystis aeruginosa and methylene blue dye (MB), respectively. The mechanism of action of Cu-VO was examined regarding the production of hydroxyl radical (·OH) in the medium and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in M. aeruginosa. FESEM and XRD analyses of Cu-VO disclosed the formation of monoclinic crystals with an average diameter of 132 nm. EDX and XPS analyses showed the presence of Cu, V, and O atoms on the surface of Cu-VO. Furthermore, FT-IR analysis of Cu-VO exposed the presence of tetrahedral VO4 and octahedral CuO6. Cu-VO effectively reduced the algal growth and degraded methylene blue under solar light. A total of 4 mg/L of Cu-VO was found to be effective for antialgal activity. Cu-VO degraded 93% of MB. The investigation of the mechanism of action of Cu-VO showed that ·OH mediated antialgal and dye degradation of M. aeruginosa and MB. Cu-VO also triggered the production of intracellular ROS in M. aeruginosa, leading to cell death. Thus, Cu-VO could be an effective catalyst for wastewater treatment.

Selective antibiofilm properties and biocompatibility of nano-ZnO and nano-ZnO/Ag coated surfaces

Spread of pathogenic microbes and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in health-care settings and public spaces is a serious public health challenge. Materials that prevent solid surface colonization or impede touch-transfer of viable microbes could provide means to decrease pathogen transfer from high-touch surfaces in critical applications. ZnO and Ag nanoparticles have shown great potential in antimicrobial applications. Less is known about nano-enabled surfaces. Here we demonstrate that surfaces coated with nano-ZnO or nano-ZnO/Ag composites are not cytotoxic to human keratinocytes and possess species-selective medium-dependent antibiofilm activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Colonization of nano-ZnO and nano-ZnO/Ag surfaces by E. coli and S. aureus was decreased in static oligotrophic conditions (no planktonic growth). Moderate to no effect was observed for bacterial biofilms in growth medium (supporting exponential growth). Inversely, nano-ZnO surfaces enhanced biofilm formation by C. albicans in oligotrophic conditions. However, enhanced C. albicans biofilm formation on nano-ZnO surfaces was effectively counteracted by the addition of Ag. Possible selective enhancement of biofilm formation by the yeast C. albicans on Zn-enabled surfaces should be taken into account in antimicrobial surface development. Our results also indicated the importance of the use of application-appropriate test conditions and exposure medium in antimicrobial surface testing.

Mechano-Informed Biomimetic Polymer Scaffolds by Incorporating Self-Powered Zinc Oxide Nanogenerators Enhance Motor Recovery and Neural Function

Piezoelectric materials can produce electrical power from the mechanical stimulation and thus, they may accelerate electroactive tissue healing as a promising treatment for traumatic peripheral nerve injuries. In this study, a piezoelectric zinc oxide nanogenerator scaffold is manufactured by 3D injectable multilayer biofabrication. The piezoelectric polymeric scaffold displays desirable mechanical and physical characteristics, such as aligned porosity, high elasticity, scaffold stiffness, surface energy, and excellent shear behavior. In addition, its biocompatibility supplies Schwann cells with an adhesive, proliferative, and angiogenic interface, as is reflected by higher expression of functional proteins including nerve growth factor (NGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In vivo mechanical stimuli by treadmill practice contribute to the comprehensive reparative therapy. The piezoelectric conduit accelerates nerve conducting velocity, promotes axonal remyelination, and restores motor function by recovering endplate muscles. Moreover, the piezoelectric nanogenerator scaffold creates biomimetic electrically conductive microenvironment without causing noticeable toxicity to functioning organs and improves peripheral nerve restoration by the multifunctional characteristics. Therefore, the mechano-informed biomimetic piezoelectric scaffold may have enormous potential in the neuroengineering for regenerative medicine.

Green synthesis of CuO- and Cu2O-NPs in assistance with high-gravity: The flowering of nanobiotechnology

This study, for the first time, reports the synthesis of CuO- and Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) using the Salvia hispanica extract by a high-gravity technique. The original green synthesis procedure led to the formation of nanoparticles with promising catalytic and biological properties. The synthesized nanoparticles were fully characterized and their catalytic activity was evaluated through a typical Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition (AAC) reaction. The potential antibacterial activity against gram positive (S. aureus) and gram negative (E. coli) bacteria were investigated. It was shown that the antibacterial properties were independent of the NP morphology as well as of the texture of the synthesis media. As a result, the presently synthesized nanoparticles showed very good photocatalytic and catalytic activities in comparison with the literature. From a biological perspective, they showed lower cytotoxicity in comparison with the literature, and also showed higher antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Thus, these present green CuO and Cu2O nanoparticles deserve further attention to improve numerous medical applications.

Pyramid-Shaped PEG-PCL-PEG Polymeric-Based Model Systems for Site-Specific Drug Delivery of Vancomycin with Enhance Antibacterial Efficacy

Antibacterial resistance remains a major global problem due to frequent prescriptions, leading to significant toxicities. To overcome the limitations of antibiotic therapy, it is highly desirable to provide site-specific delivery of drugs with controlled release. Inspired by the biocompatible, biodegradable, and site-specific mimicking behavior of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(caprolactone) (PCL), we developed vancomycin-PEG-PCL-PEG conjugates to maximize the pharmacological effects and minimize the side effects. Drug-loaded vancomycin-PEG-PCL-PEG conjugates are influenced by size, shape, surface area, encapsulation efficiency, in vitro drug release, hemolysis assay, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and bacterial kill kinetics. The results demonstrated that vancomycin (VCM) release from PEG-PCL-PEG triblock revealed a biphasic manner. Hemolysis assay showed the nonprescription nature of VCM-PEG-PCL-PEG. Cytotoxicity studies confirmed the biocompatibility of VCM-PEG-PCL-PEG. The in vitro antibacterial results showed enhance activity with minimum inhibitory concentration compared to bare VCM. Molecular dynamics simulation study revealed that binding between VCM and PEG-PCL-PEG by hydrophobic interactions offers molecular encapsulation and steric barrier to drug degradation. This newly developed therapeutic delivery system can offer to enhance activity and delivery VCM against MRSA.

Iron and zinc ions, potent weapons against multidrug-resistant bacteria

Drug-resistant bacteria are becoming an increasingly widespread problem in the clinical setting. The current pipeline of antibiotics cannot provide satisfactory options for clinicians, which brought increasing attention to the development and application of non-traditional antimicrobial substances as alternatives. Metal ions, such as iron and zinc ions, have been widely applied to inhibit pathogens through different mechanisms, including synergistic action with different metabolic enzymes, regulation of efflux pumps, and inhibition of biofilm formation. Compared with traditional metal oxide nanoparticles, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) display stronger bactericidal effect because of their smaller ion particle sizes and higher surface energies. The combined utilization of metal NPs (nanoparticles) and antibiotics paves a new way to enhance antimicrobial efficacy and reduce the incidence of drug resistance. In this review, we summarize the physiological roles and bactericidal mechanisms of iron and zinc ions, present the recent progress in the research on the joint use of metal NPs with different antibiotics, and highlight the promising prospects of metal NPs as antimicrobial agents for tackling multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Investigation on CH4 sensing characteristics of hierarchical V2O5 nanoflowers operated at relatively low temperature using chemiresistive approach

Methane (CH₄) gas, the second most potent greenhouse gas share a substantial role in contributing to the global warming and it is a necessary pre-requisite to detect the release of CH₄ into the environment at its early stage to combat climate change. In that front, this work is focussed to develop an effective CH₄ gas sensor using vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) thin films that works at an operating temperature of ∼100 °C. To understand the effect of sputtering power towards the structural characteristics of V₂O₅ films, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) analysis were performed from which the orthorhombic polycrystalline structure of V₂O₅ thin films was confirmed with varied texture co-efficient. Further, the surface elemental studies using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the prominence of V⁺⁵ oxidation state from the binding energy of V2p_3/2 and O1s peak. The effect of sputtering power on the growth of different nanostructures were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The critical role of adsorption and desorption kinetics of the deposited nanostructures were explained through first order kinetics based on Elovich model and the phase stability of different nanostructures were evaluated using Raman spectral analysis. This work achieved the sensor response of about ∼8% towards CH₄ at an operating temperature of 100 °C towards 50 ppm concentration.

Advances in Template Prepared Nano-Oxides and their Applications: Polluted Water Treatment, Energy, Sensing and Biomedical Drug Delivery

The nano-oxide materials with special structures prepared by template methods have a good dispersion, regular structures and high specific surface areas. Therefore, in some areas, improved properties are observed than conventional bulk oxide materials. For example, in the treatment of dye wastewater, the treatment efficiency of adsorbents and catalytic materials prepared by template method was about 30 % or even higher than that of conventional samples. This review mainly focuses on the progress of inorganic, organic and biological templates in the preparation of micro- and nano- oxide materials with special morphologies, and the roles of the prepared materials as adsorbents and photocatalysts in dye wastewater treatment. The characteristics and advantages of inorganic, organic and biological template are also summarized. In addition, the applications of template method prepared oxides in the field of sensors, drug carrier, energy materials and other fields are briefly discussed with detailed examples.

One-step co-precipitation synthesis of novel BiOCl/CeO2composites with enhanced photodegradation of rhodamine B

BiOCl/CeO₂composites were synthesized by a facile one-step co-precipitation method and showed good photodegradation activity of rhodamine B (RhB).

Polymeric and inorganic nanoscopical antimicrobial fillers in dentistry

Failure of dental treatments is mainly due to the biofilm accumulated on the dental materials. Many investigations have been conducted on the advancements of antimicrobial dental materials. Polymeric and inorganic nanoscopical agents are capable of inhibiting microorganism proliferation. Applying them as fillers in dental materials can achieve enhanced microbicidal ability. The present review provides a broad overview on the state-of-the-art research in the field of antimicrobial fillers which have been adopted for incorporation into dental materials over the last 5 years. The antibacterial agents and applications are described, with the aim of providing information for future investigations. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Microbial infection is the primary cause of dental treatment failure. The present review provides an overview on the state-of-art in the field of antimicrobial nanoscopical or polymeric fillers that have been applied in dental materials. Trends in the biotechnological development of these antimicrobial fillers over the last 5 years are reviewed to provide a backdrop for further advancement in this field of research.

A systematic review of the interaction and effects generated by antimicrobial metallic substituents in bone tissue engineering

Electrospun reduced graphene oxide/TiO2/poly(acrylonitrile-co-maleic acid) composite nanofibers for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic removal of malachite green and leucomalachite green

Electrospun reduced graphene oxide/TiO₂/poly(acrylonitrile-co-maleic acid) composite nanofibers (E-spun RGO/TiO₂/PANCMA NFs) were fabricated using electrospinning of the dispersive solution of PANCMA, GO and TiO₂ followed by post-chemical reduction. The obtained composite nanofibers were compressed in a dialyzer and then used to absorb and degrade malachite green (MG) and leucomalachite green (LMG) from aqueous solution. Compared to the E-spun TiO₂/PANCMA and GO/TiO₂/PANCMA NFs, the E-spun RGO/TiO₂/PANCMA NFs exhibited higher adsorption capacity and photocatalytic degradation ability. Under optimized conditions, 90.6% of MG and 93.7% of LMG from 50 mL aqueous sample solution were adsorbed on the RGO/TiO₂/PANMA NFs (3.0 mg fibers) in 2.0 min, and subsequent the 91.4% and 95.2% of MG and LMG adsorbed on the NFs were degradated in 60 min under UV irradiation, respectively. In addition, the E-spun RGO/TiO₂/PANMA NFs exhibited good reusability and could be reused in multiple cycles of operations for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of MG and LMG. This work demonstrated that the electrospun composite nanofibers are promising materials for removal of pollutants from environmental water samples.
