Hydrothermal fabrication of sandwich-structured Silver sulfide/ferroferric oxide/silver metavanadate graphene microtube using capillary effect for enhancing photocatalytic degradation and disinfection

Construction of site-specific magnetic Z-scheme CdS/Fe3O4@N-doped graphene aerogel microtube/N-doped TiO2 with porous structure: enhanced catalytic performance in photo-Fenton reaction

The development of composite photocatalysts with high charge transfer efficiency, great visible light absorption, and quick recovery has aroused the interest of many researchers. Herein, based on the hydrothermal assisted vacuum freeze drying method, CdS, Fe3O4, and N-TiO2 were, respectively, fixed in the inner, middle, and outer layers of nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel for preparation of the site-specific magnetic porous Z-scheme CdS/Fe3O4@N-doped graphene aerogel microtube/N-doped TiO2 (CdS/Fe3O4@NGAM/N-TiO2) photocatalyst. For the composite, Fe3O4@NGAM carrier with porous and tubular structure not only helps the recycle and reactants/productions mass transport in the photocatalytic process but also ensures the well-steered transfer of electrons and holes from CdS and N-TiO2 in the Z-type heterojunction system, greatly improving the separation of photogenerated carriers. Besides, Fe3O4 can also work as a Fenton catalyst to activate hydrogen peroxide which is generated in situ by CdS. Thus, the CdS/Fe3O4@NGAM/N-TiO2 composite presents excellent degradation efficiencies towards methyl orange ((MO) 98% removal rate within 50 min), bisphenol A ((BPA) 96% removal rate within 50 min), tetracycline hydrochloride ((TCH) 96% removal rate within 120 min) and strong stabilities after 6 cycles. The free radical removal experiments show that ·O2- and ·OH are the main active substances of catalysis, which further confirms the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and Fenton catalysis.

MoS2/polyaniline (PANI)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)@BiFeO3 bilayer hollow nanofiber membrane: Photocatalytic filtration and piezoelectric effect enhancing degradation and disinfection

A novel MoS₂/polyaniline (PANI)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)@BiFeO₃ bilayer hollow nanofiber membrane (PPBM-H) was successfully synthesized by coaxial electrospinning technique. In the nanofiber, BiFeO₃ nanoparticles (NPs) and MoS₂ nanosheets (NSs) were loaded in the middle and outer layers of the PANI/PAN composites, respectively, which constructs a type II heterojunction with spatially separated microtopography, thus significantly improving the charge separation in photocatalysis. Moreover, the hollow structure and the vast number of exposed groups on the surface of PPBM-H help to improve the mass transfer efficiency and pollutant adsorption performance in wastewater treatment. In addition, PPBM-H can generate H₂O₂ by in-situ activation of BiFeO₃/MoS₂ for photo-Fenton catalysis, enabling Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺ recycling. Also, PPBM-H can produce piezoelectric polarisation under ultrasonic excitation, which can further enhance the efficiency of electron/hole separation and transfer, and induce the generation of active free radicals. Owing to its wonderful self-cleaning effect, the PPBM-H has good mechanical strength (2.95 Mpa), hydrophilicity (11.6°), water flux (1248 L·m^-2·h^-1), BSA rejection (98.8 %), and exhibits distinguished photocatalytic filtration efficiencies (99.5 % tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and 99.9 % methyl orange (MO) within 60 min), piezo-photocatalysis (99.2 % TCH within 2 h), disinfection performance for Escherichia coli (E. coli) (100 %, within 60 min).

Graphene-derived antibacterial nanocomposites for water disinfection: Current and future perspectives

Antimicrobial nanomaterials provide numerous opportunities for the synthesis of next-generation sustainable water disinfectants. Using the keywords graphene and water disinfection and graphene antibacterial activity, a detailed search of the Scopus database yielded 198 and 1433 studies on using graphene for water disinfection applications and graphene antibacterial activity in the last ten years, respectively. Graphene family nanomaterials (GFNs) have emerged as effective antibacterial agents. The current innovations in graphene-, graphene oxide (GO)-, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-, and graphene quantum dot (GQD)-based nanocomposites for water disinfection, including their functionalization with semiconductor photocatalysts and metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, have been thoroughly discussed in this review. Furthermore, their novel application in the fabrication of 3D porous hydrogels, thin films, and membranes has been emphasized. The physicochemical and structural properties affecting their antibacterial efficiency, such as sheet size, layer number, shape, edges, smoothness/roughness, arrangement mode, aggregation, dispersibility, and surface functionalization have been highlighted. The various mechanisms involved in GFN antibacterial action have been reviewed, including the mechanisms of membrane stress, ROS-dependent and -independent oxidative stress, cell wrapping/trapping, charge transfer, and interaction with cellular components. For safe applications, the potential biosafety and biocompatibility of GFNs in aquatic environments are emphasized. Finally, the current limitations and future perspectives are discussed. This review may provide ideas for developing efficient and practical solutions using graphene-, GO-, rGO-, and GQD-based nanocomposites in water disinfection by rationally employing their unique properties.

Construction of visible light driven silver sulfide/graphitic carbon nitride p-n heterojunction for improving photocatalytic disinfection

Compared with the Z-scheme and type-II heterojunctions, p-n type heterojunctions are more favorable for the migration of photo-induced carriers owing to the advantage of built-in electric fields. In addition, it is still of great significance to understand the carrier migration properties of the p-n heterojunction. Therefore, the development of new p-n heterojunctions and the development of high-efficiency catalysts with effective modulation of light responsiveness and rapid transfer of charge to achieve photocatalytic inactivation have attracted much attention. In this study, we synthesized a Ag₂S/g-C₃N₄ heterojunction via the in situ deposition of Ag₂S onto the g-C₃N₄ substrate. The prepared Ag₂S/g-C₃N₄ composite facilitated photo-generated charge carrier transfer and exhibited outstanding photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria compared to that of a single catalyst under visible light irradiation. In addition, the ACN-2 composites fully deactivated 7 log10 CFU/mL E. coli and 7 log10 CFU/mL S. aureus cells in 90 min under visible light. The quenching experiments confirmed that photo-generated active species (O₂^-, OH, and h⁺) were the major reactive oxygen species that contributed to the inactivation of bacteria. Energy band alignment analysis indicated that a type-II band alignment was formed in the p-n heterostructure, thereby providing strong support for the photocatalytic mechanism. This study not only provides insights into the design of p-n heterostructures, but also presents a promising strategy to enhance the photocatalytic capacities of g-C₃N₄ based materials for pathogen inactivation.

Central-collapsed structure of CoFeAl layered double hydroxides and its photocatalytic performance

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has been regarded as one of the most potential photocatalysts for degradation of the pollutants, due to the tunable elements in the laminates, high surface area and exposed active sites. Developing a photocatalyst with a visible light activity and fast charge separation efficiency is a main research focus. In this work, a central-collapsed CoFeAl-LDHs was formed via the selective etching Al³⁺ in the laminates, which relied on the function of OH^- produced by urea hydrolysis. The Central-collapsed structure of CoFeAl-LDHs exhibited enhanced adsorption activity and photocatalytic efficiency. The results show that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model are suitable for adsorption behavior. This etching cavity is beneficial to the adsorption of MB and provides a better platform for the direct interaction between MB and CoFeAl-LDHs. The morphology and photoelectrochemical properties of the central-collapsed structure of LDHs were characterized and used to explore the relationship between the etching degree and photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic properties of all the samples under visible light irradiation were evaluated, and LDH-6 has the best photocatalytic activity. This work provides a novel approach for the fabrication of central-collapsed structure of layered double hydroxides photocatalysts to meet environmental and energy requirements.

Design and Preparation of Chitosan-Crosslinked Bismuth Ferrite/Biochar Coupled Magnetic Material for Methylene Blue Removal

Biochar obtained by pyrolysis of the fiber plant kenaf was mixed with bismuth ferrite (BiFeO₃) in a chitosan-containing acetic acid solution, magnetized, and modified to prepare a chitosan-crosslinked BiFeO₃/biochar coupled magnetic material. The adsorption properties of the composite were investigated using methylene blue dissolved in water, and the effects of external conditions, such as pH, methylene blue concentration, reaction time, and temperature, on the adsorption performance were studied. The adsorption data were fitted and analyzed with kinetic and isotherm models, and the results showed that the BiFeO₃/biochar coupled magnetic material effectively adsorbed methylene blue. The amounts adsorbed onto this magnetic material increased with increasing initial methylene blue concentration, reaction time, and temperature, and the adsorption performance improved under neutral and alkaline conditions. The pseudo-first-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models satisfactorily fitted the adsorption data, showing that the adsorption of methylene blue involved both chemical and physical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue onto the BiFeO₃/biochar coupled magnetic material reached 18.942 mg·g⁻¹ at 25 °C, confirming the excellent dye binding activity of this material.
