Mxenes for membrane separation: from fabrication strategies to advanced applications

Transition metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides, commonly referred to as MXenes, have gained widespread attention since their discovery in 2011 as a promising family of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Their impressive chemical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and biological properties have fueled a surge in research focused on the synthesis and application of MXenes in various fields, including membrane-based separation. By engineering the materials and membrane structures, MXene-based membranes have demonstrated remarkable separation performance and added functionalities, such as antifouling and photocatalytic properties. In this review, we aim to have a timely and critical review of research on their fabrication strategy and performance in advanced molecular separation and ion exchange, beginning with a brief introduction of the preparation and physicochemical properties of MXenes. Finally, outlooks and future works are outlined with the aims to provide valuable insights and guidance for advancing membranes' applications in different separation domains.

Purification processes of polymeric nanoparticles: How to improve their clinical translation?

Polymeric nanoparticles, as revolutionary nanomedicines, have offered a new class of diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for a multitude of diseases. With its immense potential, the world witnesses the new age of nanotechnology after the COVID-19 vaccines were developed based on nanotechnology. Even though there are countless benchtop research studies in the nanotechnology world, their integration into commercially available technologies is still restricted. The post-pandemic world demands a surge of research in the domain, which leaves us with the fundamental question: why is the clinical translation of therapeutic nanoparticles so restricted? Complications in nanomedicine purification, among other things, are to blame for the lack of transference. Polymeric nanoparticles, owing to their ease of manufacture, biocompatibility, and enhanced efficiency, are one of the more explored domains in organic-based nanomedicines. Purification of nanoparticles can be challenging and necessitates tailoring the available methods in accordance with the polymeric nanoparticle and impurities involved. Though a number of techniques have been described, there are no available guidelines that help in selecting the method to better suit our requirements. We encountered this difficulty while compiling articles for this review and looking for methods to purify polymeric nanoparticles. The currently accessible bibliography for purification techniques only provides approaches for a specific type of nanomaterial or sometimes even procedures for bulk materials, that are not fully relevant to nanoparticles. In our research, we tried to summarize the available purification techniques using the approach of A.F. Armington. We divided the purification systems into two major classes, namely: phase separation-based techniques (based on the physical differences between the phases) and matter exchange-based techniques (centered on physicochemical induced transfer of materials and compounds). The phase separation methods are based on either using nanoparticle size differences to retain them on a physical barrier (filtration techniques) or using their densities to segregate them (centrifugation techniques). The matter exchange separation methods rely on either transferring the molecules or impurities across a barrier using simple physicochemical phenomena, like the concentration gradients (dialysis method) or partition coefficients (extraction technique). After describing the methods in detail, we highlight their advantages and limitations, mainly focusing on preformed polymer-based nanoparticles. Tailoring a purification strategy takes into account the nanoparticle structure and its integrity, the method selected should be suited for preserving the integrity of the particles, in addition to conforming to the economical, material and productivity considerations. In the meantime, we advocate the use of a harmonized international regulatory framework to define the adequate physicochemical and biological characterization of nanomedicines. An appropriate purification strategy serves as the backbone to achieving desired characteristics, in addition to reducing variability. As a result, the present review aspires to serve as a comprehensive guide for researchers, who are new to the domain, as well as a synopsis of purification strategies and analytical characterization methods used in preclinical studies.

An Overview of Photocatalytic Membrane Degradation Development

Environmental pollution has become a worldwide issue. Rapid industrial and agricultural practices have increased organic contaminants in water supplies. Hence, many strategies have been developed to address this concern. In order to supply clean water for various applications, high-performance treatment technology is required to effectively remove organic and inorganic contaminants. Utilizing photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) has shown promise as a viable alternative process in the water and wastewater industry due to its efficiency, low cost, simplicity, and low environmental impact. PMRs are commonly categorized into two main categories: those with the photocatalyst suspended in solution and those with the photocatalyst immobilized in/on a membrane. Herein, the working and fouling mechanisms in PMRs membranes are investigated; the interplay of fouling and photocatalytic activity and the development of fouling prevention strategies are elucidated; and the significance of photocatalysis in membrane fouling mechanisms such as pore plugging and cake layering is thoroughly explored.

Efficient oily wastewater treatment by a novel electroflotation-membrane separation system consisting a Ni-Cu-P membrane prepared by electroless nickel plating

Electroflotation-membrane separation system with a conductive membrane has recently emerged as a promising technology for oily wastewater treatment. However, the conductive membrane prepared by electroless plating often suffers the problems of low stability and high activation cost. To solve these problems, this work proposed a new strategy regarding surface metallization of polymeric membrane by surface nickel-catalyzed electroless nickel plating of nickel‑copper‑phosphorus alloys for the first time. It was found that, addition of copper source remarkably enhanced the membranes' hydrophilicity, corrosion resistance and fouling resistance. The Ni-Cu-P membrane had an underwater oil contact angle of up to 140°, and simultaneously possessed rejection rate > 98 % with rather high flux of 65,663.0 L·m^-2·h^-1 and excellent cycling stability when separating n-hexane/water mixtures under gravity drive. The permeability is higher than the state-of-the-art membranes for oil/water separation. The Ni-Cu-P membrane as the cathode can be assembled into an electroflotation-membrane separation system, allowing to separate oil-in-water emulsion with 99 % rejection. Meanwhile, the applied electric field significantly improved membrane flux and fouling resistance (flux recovery up to 91 %) when separate kaolin suspensions. Polarization curve and Nyquist curve analysis further confirmed that addition of Cu element obviously enhanced corrosion resistance of the Ni modified membrane. This work provided a novel strategy to make up high-efficiency membranes for oily wastewater treatment.

Janus Distillation Membrane via Mussel-Inspired Inkjet Printing Modification for Anti-Oil Fouling Membrane Distillation

In this work, inkjet printing technology was used to print a thin layer of a hydrophilic solution containing polydopamine as a binder and polyethyleneimine as a strong hydrophilic agent on a commercial hydrophobic membrane to produce a Janus membrane for membrane distillation. The pristine and modified membranes were tested in a direct-contact membrane distillation system with mineral oil-containing feedwater. The results revealed that an integrated and homogenous hydrophilic layer was printed on the membrane with small intrusions in the pores. The membrane, which contained three layers of inkjet-printed hydrophilic layers, showed a high underwater oil contact angle and a low in-air water contact angle. One-layer inkjet printing was not robust enough, but the triple-layer coated modified membrane maintained its anti-oil fouling performance even for a feed solution containing 70 g/L NaCl and 0.01 v/v% mineral oil concentration with a flux of around 20 L/m²h. This study implies the high potential of the inkjet printing technique as a facile surface modification strategy to improve membrane performance.

"Assessing exposure of printing factory workers in thailand to selected heavy metals using urine and hair as non-invasive matrices"

BACKGROUND

There are few thorough studies on the extent and inter-element relationships of heavy metal contamination in printing factory workers, especially in developing countries. The objective of this study was to determine the levels of eight heavy metals, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and manganese (Mn), in urine and scalp hair of printing industry workers, and assess inter-element correlations.

METHODS

We examined a total of 85 urine samples and 85 scalp hair samples (3 cm hair segments taken from near the scalp) in 85 printing workers from a printing house in Bangkok, Thailand. We used an interviewer-administered questionnaire about participants' printing techniques, work characteristics, and work environment. Urine and scalp hair samples were analyzed for levels of each element using the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) technique.

RESULTS

As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb were detected in urine with the geometric mean concentration range of 0.0028-0.0209 mg/L, and Hg, Pb, Ni, Cd, Co, Mn, Cr were detected in hair samples (0.4453-7.165 mg/kg dry weight) of printing workers. The geometric mean Ni level was significantly higher in the urine of production line workers than back-office personnel (0.0218 mg/L vs. 0.0132 mg/L; p = 0.0124). The other elements did not differ significantly between production line and back-office workers in either urine or hair. There was also a strong, statistically significant positive correlation between Ni and Co levels in hair samples of workers (r = 0.944, p < 0.0001).

CONCLUSIONS

Average concentrations of most of the metals in urine and hair of printing workers were found to be above the upper reference values. The significantly higher concentrations of Ni in production line workers might be due to more exposure to printed materials. A strong inter-element correlation between Ni and Co in hair samples can increase stronger health effects and should be further investigated. This study reveals possible dependencies and impact interactions of heavy metal exposure in printing factory workers.

A novel composite membrane for simultaneous separation and catalytic degradation of oil/water emulsion with high performance

It is of great significance to develop novel membranes with dual-function of simultaneously separating oil/water emulsion and degrading the contained water-miscible toxic organic components. To meet this requirement, a dual-functional Ni nanoparticles (NPs)@Ag/C-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite membrane was fabricated via electroless nickel plating strategy in this study. The as-prepared composite membrane possessed superhydrophilicity with water contact angle of 0° and splendid underwater oleophobic property with oil contact angle of 142°. When the membrane was applied for separation of surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsion, high permeate flux (about 97 L m^-2·h^-1 under gravity), oil rejection (about 98.8%) and antifouling property were achieved. Benefitting from the NiNPs@Ag/C-CNTs layer on membrane surface, the composite membrane exhibited high catalytic degradation activity for water-miscible toxic organic pollutant (4-nitrophenol) with addition of NaBH₄ in a flow-through mode. Meanwhile, the NiNPs@Ag/C-CNTs composite membrane possessed excellent durability, which was verified by the good structural integrity even under ultrasonic treatment. The cost-efficiency, high separation and degradation performance of the prepared membrane suggested its great potential for treatment of oily wastewater.

Effect of the Zeta Potential on the Corrosion Resistance of Electroless Nickel and PVDF Composite Layers Using Surfactants

Composite layers of Ni-P and PVDF were obtained using surfactants to enhance the corrosion resistance of the fluoride ion. The zeta potential of PVDF particles was changed with the surfactants (cationic, anionic, and nonionic). The effects of the zeta potential of PVDF particles on the particle distribution, morphology, composition, hydrophobicity, and corrosion resistance of the composite layers were studied using the different types of surfactants. The deposition behaviors of the Ni-P layer and PVDF particles strongly depended on the zeta potential of PVDF particles. Using anionic surfactants, especially C₁₂H₂₅SO₄Na (SDS), the zeta potential of PVDF particles was -30.6 mV. The densification and uniformity of the composite layers with a higher amount of PVDF particles were achieved, which resulted in the superior resistance to fluoride ion corrosion. After heating at 180 °C, the PVDF particles were melted, spread, and filled into the pores of the composite layers, which led to the further enhanced corrosion resistance. It was demonstrated that the zeta potential of PVDF particles affected the dispersion, stability, and codeposition with electroless nickel, which resulted in the uniform and dense composite layers and enhanced the corrosion resistance of the fluoride ion.

Temperature and immigration effects on quorum sensing in the biofilms of anaerobic membrane bioreactors

Quorum sensing (QS), a microbial communication mechanism modulated by acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) molecules impacts biofilm formation in bioreactors. This study investigated the effects of temperature and immigration on AHL levels and biofouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactors. The hypothesis was that the immigrant microbial community would increase the AHL-mediated QS, thus stimulating biofouling and that low temperatures would exacerbate this. We observed that presence of immigrants, especially when exposed to low temperatures indeed increased AHL concentrations and fouling in the biofilms on the membranes. At low temperature, the concentrations of the main AHLs observed, N-dodecanoyl-L-homoserine lactone and N-decanoyl-L-homoserine lactone, were significantly higher in the biofilms than in the sludge and correlated significantly with the abundance of immigrant bacteria. Apparently low temperature, immigration and denser community structure in the biofilm stressed the communities, triggering AHL production and excretion. These insights into the social behaviour of reactor communities responding to low temperature and influx of immigrants have implications for biofouling control in bioreactors.

A comparative study between two novel silicone/graphene-based nanostructured surfaces for maritime antifouling

Two novel superhydrophobic nanocomposite series of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) enriched with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and graphene oxide/boehmite nanorods (GO-γ-AlOOH) nanofillers were synthesized as maritime fouling-release (FR) surfaces. Controlling the nanofillers' structures and distribution in the silicone matrix influenced the self-cleaning and antifouling properties. γ-AlOOH nanorods had a single crystallinity with an average diameter of 10-20 nm and < 200 nm length. A hydrothermal method was used to prepare RGO, while the chemical deposition method was used to synthesis GO-γ-AlOOH nanocomposites for use as fouling-release coating materials. For studying the synergetic effects of graphene-based materials on the surface, mechanical, and FR features, these nanofillers were dispersed in the silicone matrix using the solution casting method. The hydrophobicity and antifouling properties of the surface were studied using water contact angle (WCA), scanning electron, and atomic force microscopes (SEM and AFM). Coatings' roughness, superhydrophobicity, and surface mechanical properties all improved for the homogeneity of the dispersion of the nanocomposite. Laboratory assessments were carried out for 30 days using selected microorganisms to determine the antifouling effects of the coating systems. PDMS/GO-γ-AlOOH nanorod composite had better antibacterial activity than PDMS/RGO nanocomposite against different bacterial strains. This is caused by the high surface area and stabilizing effects of the GO-γ-AlOOH hybrid nanofillers. The PDMS/GO-γ-AlOOH nanorod composite (3 wt%) had the lowest biodegradability percentage (1.6%) and the microbial endurability percentages for gram-positive, gram-negative, and fungi were 86.42%, 97.94%, and 85.97%, respectively. A field trial in natural seawater was conducted to confirm the coatings' FR performance based on the screening process and image analysis for 45 days in a tropical area. The most profound superhydrophobic antifouling nanostructured coating was the homogeneity of the GO-γ-AlOOH (3 wt%) dispersion, which had a WCA of 151° and a rough surface.

Microplotter printing of planar solid electrolytes in the CeO2-Y2O3 system

The formation process for planar solid electrolytes in the CeO₂-Y₂O₃ system has been studied using efficient, high-performance, high-resolution microplotter printing technology, using functional ink based on nanopowders (the average size of crystallites was 12-15 nm) of a similar composition obtained by programmed coprecipitation of metal hydroxides. The dependence of the microstructure of the oxide nanoparticles obtained and their crystal structure on yttrium concentration has been studied using a wide range of methods. According to X-ray diffraction (XRD), the nanopowders and coatings produced are single-phase, with a cubic crystal structure of the fluorite type, and the electronic state and content of cerium and yttrium in the printed coatings have been determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have shown that the coatings produced are homogeneous, they do not contain defects in the form of fractures and the height difference over an area of 1 µm² is 30-45 nm. The local electrophysical characteristics of the oxide coatings produced (the work function of the coating surface, capacitance values, maps of the surface potential and capacitive contrast distribution over the surface) have been studied using Kelvin-probe force microscopy (KPFM) and scanning capacitive microscopy (SCM). Using impedance spectroscopy, the dependence of the electrophysical characteristics of printed planar solid electrolytes in the CeO₂-Y₂O₃ system on yttrium content has been determined and the prospects of the technology developed for the manufacture of modern, intermediate-temperature, solid oxide fuel cells have been demonstrated.

A novel single-stage ceramic membrane moving bed biofilm reactor coupled with reverse osmosis for reclamation of municipal wastewater to NEWater-like product water

In this study, a single-stage ceramic membrane moving bed biofilm reactor (CMMBBR) was developed for simultaneous COD and nitrogen removal, while its effluent was further reclaimed to ultra-clean water by a coupled reverse osmosis (RO) unit. Results showed that approximately 97% of COD and 93% of total nitrogen (TN) removal were obtained in CMMBBR, with the effluent COD and TN concentrations being 8.15 mg/L and 2.31 mg/L, respectively. The excellent performance of CMMBBR was achieved at a constant permeate flux of 30 L/m²/h (LMH), with the average dTMP/dt of 0.05 bar/d due to the low suspended sludge concentration (i.e. 75 mg VSS/L) and the effective membrane scouring by fluidized biocarriers. The excellent permeate quality of CMMBBR could lead to a very low RO fouling rate of 0.029 bar/d, with the product water quality meeting typical NEWater standards in major ions concerned. In addition, the energy and cost analyses further indicated that the proposed CMMBBR-RO process could reduce 43.8% of energy consumption and 23.5% of operating cost compared to the current NEWater production process. It is expected that the integrated CMMBBR-RO process could provide a promising alternative for municipal wastewater reclamation to high-grade product water towards minimized sludge production and energy-efficient operation.

Green preparation of polyvinylidene fluoride loose nanofiltration hollow fiber membranes with multilayer structure for treating textile wastewater

In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) loose nanofiltration (NF) hollow fiber membranes with multilayer structure were prepared successfully based on a solvent-free process. Graphene oxide (GO) was used to cover the interface pores of the pristine PVDF membranes via vacuum filtration, and polypyrrole (PPy) was polymerized on the surface to further decorate the membrane structure. Interestingly, the modified membranes exhibited a multilayer structure due to synergistic effect of GO and PPy. The structure and property of PVDF loose NF membranes were investigated in detail. After modifying by GO and PPy, the hydrophilicity improved obviously. Moreover, the molecular weight cut off (MWCO) was about 3580 Da, and the smallest pore size of skin layer decreased to 2.5-4 nm. Furthermore, the PVDF loose NF hollow fiber membranes presented a high dye rejection (˃98.5%) for negative dyes, whereas a low salt rejection for NaCl (about 4%), showing a great potential for separating dye/salt accurately. Specifically, there were not any solvent used in all the preparation processes. The work offered a novel strategy for green preparation of loose NF membranes.

Flame-retardant ethylene vinyl acetate composite materials by combining additions of aluminum hydroxide and melamine cyanurate: Preparation and characteristic evaluations

There is a great interest to develop efficient fire-resistant materials. While ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is a widely used material, it suffers from the problem of relatively high inflammability which seriously hinders its usage as the product material with a high flame-retardant requirement. In this study, a strategy to combine aluminum hydroxide (ATH) and melamine cyanurate (MCA) with EVA was proposed to prepare the EVA composite materials with high flame resistance. It was found that slight addition of MCA could increase the lubricity of EVA and raise the compatibility between EVA and ATH. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the thermal stability of EVA was improved via adding MCA, which was evidenced by the delayed thermal decomposition temperature. Moreover, the combustion results indicated that the EVA composite with 60 parts per hundred (phr) ATH and 40 phr MCA addition (EVA-60-40) displayed the optimal isolated layer favoring the fire resistance. In addition, the highest limiting oxygen index (LOI) value (27.5%) and V-0 rating of the EVA-60-40 as compared with other components indicated its incombustible nature. These results suggested the synergetic effect of ATH and MCA additions, the high efficiency of the proposed strategy and the wide application prospect of the produced EVA-ATH-MCA composite materials.

Combined strategy of blending and surface modification as an effective route to prepare antifouling ultrafiltration membranes

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes blended with hydrophilic nanomaterials usually exhibit preferable overall performance including the membrane permeability and antifouling capability. However, the improvement in antifouling performance may be not outstanding due to the small amount of nanomaterial distributed near the membrane surface and the limited improvement in membrane hydrophilicity. Notably, excess addition of nanomaterials may lead to the decline in membrane permeability. In order to solve the above problem, we integrated the strategy of blending and surface modification to construct novel hybrid UF membranes. Novel nanohybrid was prepared via tannic acid (TA) coating on hydroxyapatite nanotubes (HANTs) and the subsequent grafting of zwitterionic polyethylenimine (ZPEI). The prepared nanohybrid (HANTs@TA-ZPEI) was incorporated with the polysulfone containing tertiary amine groups to fabricate hybrid membranes via the solution blending and the subsequent immersion-precipitation phase inversion process. Then the matrix was modified with zwitterions via the reaction of tertiary amine group with 1, 3-propane sultone. UF tests were conducted using the bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) as the representative foulants. Results showed that both the permeability and the antifouling performance of the membranes achieved favorable promotion. Thereinto, the water flux of M-B0.4-Z membrane (pre blended with 0.4 wt% HANTs@TA-ZPEI in the casting solution and post-surface modified) exhibited 2.6 times that of the pristine membrane and the flux recovery ratio (FRR) for BSA and HA attained 93.4% and 96.1%, respectively. By the combination of blending and surface modification, both the membrane permeability and fouling resistant properties could attain remarkable promotion, which exerted the advantages of two methods and made up the deficiency of single blending method.

Performance evaluation of conventional membrane bioreactor and moving bed membrane bioreactor for synthetic textile wastewater treatment

In this study, conventional membrane bioreactor (MBR) and moving bed-membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR) processes were compared in synthetic textile wastewater treatment. For this purpose, the bioreactors were operated as a conventional MBR, an MB-MBR with a biocarrier filling ratio of 20 % and an MB-MBR with a biocarrier filling ratio of 10 %, respectively. In the conventional MBR operation, 93.1 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 87.1 % color (Reactive Red 390) removal efficiencies were obtained. In both MB-MBR operations, almost equal COD and color removal efficiencies were found as 98.5 % and 89.5 %, respectively. Moreover, offline physical and chemical membrane cleaning processes were applied every other day and every 15 days throughout the conventional MBR operation, respectively, while no physical or chemical membrane cleaning was required during both MB-MBR operations. Furthermore, lower polysaccharide concentrations of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and floc sizes of sludge and higher zeta potential of sludge were determined in MB-MBR. Considering the obtained results, it may be stated that the MB-MBR process is an attractive treatment technology for reducing membrane fouling propensity for treatment of textile wastewater.

Clarification of 1,3-Propanediol Fermentation Broths by Using a Ceramic Fine UF Membrane

This work examined the use of a ceramic fine ultrafiltration (UF) membrane for the pre-treatment of 1,3-propanodiol (1,3-PD) fermentation broths. It has been demonstrated that the membrane used provides obtaining a high-quality, sterile permeate, which can be sequentially separated by other processes such as nanofiltration (NF) and membrane distillation (MD). Special attention was paid to the impact of the operational parameters on the membrane performance. The series of UF experiments under transmembrane pressure (TMP) from 0.1 to 0.4 MPa and feed flow rate (Q) from 200 to 400 dm3/h were performed. Moreover, the impact of the feed pH, in the range from 5 to 10, on the flux was investigated. It has been demonstrated that for fine UF, increasing the TMP is beneficial, and TMP equal to 0.4 MPa and Q of 400 dm3/h ensure the highest flux and its long-term stability. It has been shown that in terms of process efficiency, the most favorable pH of the broths is equal to 9.4. An effective and simple method of membrane cleaning was presented. Finally, the resistance-in-series model was applied to describe resistances that cause flux decline. Results obtained in this study can assist in improving the cost-effectiveness of the UF process of 1,3-PD fermentation broths.

Surface activation towards manganese dioxide nanosheet arrays via plasma engineering as cathode and anode for efficient water splitting

Developing high-efficiency, low-cost electrocatalysts for water splitting is important but challenging. Two-dimensional nanosheet manganese dioxide (MnO₂) arrays are promising candidates for the design and development of advanced catalysts because of their large surface area. Here, a feasible solution to improve the catalytic activity of MnO₂ materials via decorating the active sites on the surface is proposed. With the help of plasma engineering, we successfully enabled surface activity of the MnO₂ nanosheets by decorating P or Fe species together with rich vacancies on the surface. The decorated P (P-MnO₂) or Fe (Fe-MnO₂) species were highly beneficial for the absorption of protons and OH^- respectively, and rich oxygen vacancies induced the formation of stable Mn³⁺, which contributed to electron and charge transfer. Thus, increased electrochemically active specific areas, accelerated charge transfer, and a proper surface electronic structure could be achieved. On the basis of this activation strategy, the fabricated P-MnO₂ and Fe-MnO₂ showed excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions. To our knowledge, the performance of P-MnO₂ and Fe-MnO₂ outperformed most MnO₂-based electrocatalysts in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting. Surface activation of two-dimensional MnO₂ materials by decorating active species via plasma treatment can provide a feasible route for modulating the performance of earth-abundant electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Performance Evaluation of Tight Ultrafiltration Membrane Systems at Pilot Scale for Agave Fructans Fractionation and Purification

Ceramic and polymeric membrane systems were compared at the pilot scale for separating agave fructans into different molecular weight fractions that help to diversify them into more specific industrial applications. The effect of the transmembrane pressure of ultrafiltration performance was evaluated through hydraulic permeability, permeate flux and rejection coefficients, using the same operating conditions such as temperature, feed concentration and the molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of membranes. The fouling phenomenon and the global yield of the process were evaluated in concentration mode. A size distribution analysis of agave fructans is presented and grouped by molecular weight in different fractions. Great differences were found between both systems, since rejection coefficients of 68.6% and 100% for fructans with degrees of polymerization (DP) > 10, 36.3% and 99.3% for fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and 21.4% and 34.2% for mono-disaccharides were obtained for ceramic and polymeric membrane systems, respectively. Thus, ceramic membranes are better for use in the fractionation process since they reached a purity of 42.2% of FOS with a yield of 40.1% in the permeate and 78.23% for fructans with DP > 10 and a yield of 70% in the retentate. Polymeric membranes make for an efficient fructan purification process, eliminating only mono-disaccharides, and reaching a 97.7% purity (considering both fructan fractions) with a yield of 64.3% in the retentate.

Syntheses of Silver Nanowires Ink and Printable Flexible Transparent Conductive Film: A Review

Nowadays, flexible transparent conductive film (FTCF) is one of the important components of many flexible electronic devices. Due to comprehensive performances on optoelectronics, FTCF based on silver nanowires (AgNWs) networks have received great attention and are expected to be a new generation of transparent conductive film materials. Due to its simple process, printed electronic technology is now an important technology for the rapid production of low-cost and high-quality flexible electronic devices. AgNWs-based FTCF fabricated by using printed electronic technology is considered to be the most promising process. Here, the preparation and performance of AgNW ink are introduced. The current printing technologies are described, including gravure printing, screen printing and inkjet printing. In addition, the latest methods to improve the conductivity, adhesion, and stability of AgNWs-based FTCF are introduced. Finally, the applications of AgNWs-based FTCF in solar cells, transparent film heaters, optoelectronic devices, touch panel, and sensors are introduced in detail. Therefore, combining various printing technologies with AgNWs ink may provide more opportunities for the development of flexible electronic devices in the future.

Different fouling propensities of loosely and tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and the related fouling mechanisms in a membrane bioreactor

In this study, fouling propensities of loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPSs) and tightly bound EPSs (TB-EPSs) in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) were investigated. It was found that, both the LB-EPSs and TB-EPSs possessed rather high specific filtration resistance (SFR), and LB-EPSs possessed about three times higher SFR but a lower adhesion ability than the TB-EPSs. A series of characterizations demonstrated that LB-EPSs had higher ratio of proteins to polysaccharides (PN/PS ratio), lower CO bonds content, higher hydrophilicity, higher deformation or mixing ability and more abundant high molecular weight (MW) substances than TB-EPSs. Thermodynamic analyzes revealed that the total interaction energy between the TB-EPSs and membrane was always attractive and strengthened, well explaining the higher adhesion ability of the TB-EPSs than the LB-EPSs. Meanwhile, the filtration process was found to be associated with gel layer formation, and the high SFR of EPSs was caused by the chemical potential change in gel layer filtration. According to the Flory-Huggins lattice theory, LB-EPSs tended to form a gel layer with higher cross-linking and/or polymer entanglement level because they contained more abundant high molecular weight (MW) substance, corresponding to higher SFR than that of the TB-EPSs. The proposed thermodynamic mechanisms well interpreted the different fouling propensities of LB-EPSs and TB-EPSs in MBRs.

Laser digital patterning of conductive electrodes using metal oxide nanomaterials

As an alternative approach to the conventional deposition and photolithographic processes, the laser digital patterning (LDP) process, which is also known as the laser direct writing process, has attracted considerable attention because it is a non-photolithographic, non-vacuum, on-demand, and cost-effective electrode fabrication route that can be applied to various substrates, including heat-sensitive flexible substrates. The LDP process was initially developed using noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) such as Au and Ag because such materials are free from oxidation even in a nanosize configuration. Thus, the NPs must be fused together to form continuous conductive structures upon laser irradiation. However, common metals are easily oxidized at the nanoscale and exist in oxidized forms owing to the extremely large surface-to-volume ratio of NPs. Therefore, to fabricate conductive electrodes using common metal NPs via the LDP process, laser irradiation should be used to sinter the NPs and simultaneously induce additional photochemical reactions, such as reduction, and defect structure modification to increase the conductivity of the electrodes. This review summarizes recent studies on the LDP process in which metal oxide NPs, such as ITO, ZnO, CuO, and NiO, were exclusively utilized for fabricating conductive electrodes. The outlook of the LDP process for these materials is also discussed as a method that can be used together with or as a replacement for conventional ones to produce next-generation transparent conductors, sensors, and electronics.

Inkjet printing assisted fabrication of polyphenol-based coating membranes for oil/water separation

While polyphenol-based coating has been regarded as a promising alternative to functionalize membrane surface, it usually suffers from problems of low-efficient procedure and low utilization rate of the polyphenolic compounds, hindering its large-scale implementations. To solve these problems, this study provided a first report on inkjet printing of polyphenols (catechol (CA) or tannic acid (TA)) and sodium periodate (SP) on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to improve membrane performance. A series of analyses showed the efficient formation of homogenous films on the PVDF membrane surface and the improvement of hydrophilicity by the inkjet printing technique. The PVDF membranes decorated with the optimized polyphenolic coating exhibited a promising oil/water separation efficiency (higher than 99%) with a high average water permeation flux of 5.2 times higher than that of the pristine membrane. Meanwhile, the modified membranes illustrated a good stability under acidic conditions (pH = 2-7). The novel method proposed in this study is facile, cost-saving and environment-friendly. The advantages of the proposed method and the modified membranes demonstrated the great significance of the proposed method in practical applications.

In-situ coating TiO2 surface by plant-inspired tannic acid for fabrication of thin film nanocomposite nanofiltration membranes toward enhanced separation and antibacterial performance

A major issue hindering development of thin film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration (NF) membrane is the interfacial defects induced by nanomaterial aggregation in top layer. Although various nanomaterials surface modification strategies have been developed to eliminate the interfacial defects, they usually involve extra modification steps and complex post-treatments. Inspired by the substrate-independent coating ability of tannic acid (TA) and the fact that the phenolic hydroxyl groups in TA can react with acyl chloride group in trimesoyl chloride, a TA coating solution containing TiO₂ nanoparticles was used as an aqueous phase of interfacial polymerization to prepare interfacial modified TFN NF membranes in this study. Surface modification of TiO₂ nanoparticles and interfacial polymerization can be carried out in a single step without any extra pre-modification step. It was found that the TA coating on TiO₂ nanoparticles surface could decrease TiO₂ aggregations and enhance interfacial compatibility between TiO₂ and polyester matrix. The TFN NF membrane prepared at a TiO₂ loading of 0.020 wt% exhibited a pure water flux of 28.8 L m^-2 h^-1 (284% higher than that of the controlled TFC membrane), and possessed enhanced NaCl and Na₂SO₄ rejections of 57.9% and 94.6%, respectively, breaking through the trade-off between permeability and selectivity.
