Conjugate Polymer-clothed TiO2@V2O5 nanobelts and their enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance in water remediation

Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance of the FePt/PPy-C Composite toward Methanol Oxidation

A novel FePt/PPy-C composite nanomaterial has been designed and investigated as a methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) electrocatalyst. The FePt nanoparticles with an average diameter of about 3 nm have been prepared by the co-reduction method and then loaded onto the PPy-C composite support. The electrocatalytic performance is affected by the composition of the FePt nanoparticles. The experimental results indicated that the Fe1.5Pt1/PPy-C catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability for MOR, with mass activity and specific activity of 1.76 A mgPt-1 and 2.71 mA cm-2, respectively, which are 5.18 and 4.60 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) has been employed to simulate the electrical structures of catalyst supports, and the mechanism of the methanol oxidation process has been further analyzed. The heterojunctions of the PPy-C interface could accelerate the electron migration from the electrocatalytic center to the electrodes. The possibility of methanol oxidation has been improved effectively, which can be confirmed by the d-band center and CO adsorption energy on FePt nanoparticles in the DFT calculation results.

A flexible capacity-metric creatinine sensor based on polygon-shape polyvinylpyrrolidone/CuO and Fe2O3 NRDs electrodeposited on three-dimensional TiO2-V2O5-Polypyrrole nanocomposite

The innovations of the present work include these items; (i) Design and preparation of three-dimensional flexible conductive polymeric nanocomposites (3D-FCPNCs) containing polypyrrole (PPy), V2O5 and TiO2 and modification of their surface with polygon-shape polyvinylpyrrolidone/CuO nanorods (PVP/CuO NRDs) and Fe2O3 NRDs using an hierarchical process based on isoelectric point (IEP), (ii) Application of the prepared surfaces as the flexible enzymeless creatinine sensors using four calibration curves (impedimetric, real capacitance (C'), imaginary capacitance (C″) and double layer capacitance (Cdl)) obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique. The best results have been obtained using PVP/CuO NRDs-Fe2O3 NRDs/TiO2-V2O5-PPy 3D-FCPNC hierarchical electrode with a wide range of the linear concentration range (10 nmol L-1 -1.3 mmol L-1). Although, determination of creatinine through extraction of parameters such as charge transfer resistance (Rct) and Cdl from measuring impedance at a wide range of frequencies provides useful information about the characteristics of the electrolyte/electrode interface, but measuring real and imaginary capacitances at a specific frequency instead of a wide frequency range can decrease the response time to lower than 1 min. Finally, the prepared hierarchical enzymeless sensors have been successfully used to estimate creatinine concentration in blood serum.

Strategy and Technical Progress of Recycling of Spent Vanadium-Titanium-Based Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalysts

Selective catalytic reduction denitration technology, abbreviated as SCR, is essential for the removal of nitrogen oxide from the flue gas of coal-fired power stations and has been widely used. Due to the strong demand for energy and the requirements for environmental protection, a large amount of SCR catalyst waste is produced. The spent SCR catalyst contains high-grade valuable metals, and proper disposal or treatment of the SCR catalyst can protect the environment and realize resource recycling. This review focuses on the two main routes of regeneration and recycling of spent vanadium-titanium SCR catalysts that are currently most widely commercially used and summarizes in detail the technologies of recycling, high-efficiency recycling, and recycling of valuable components of spent vanadium-titanium SCR catalysts. This review also discusses in depth the future development direction of recycling spent vanadium-titanium SCR catalysts. It provides a reference for promoting recycling, which is crucial for resource recovery and green and low-carbon development.

Ag2CO3-Based Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals Degradation: A Review

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the aquatic environment have garnered a lot of attention during the past few years. Due to their toxic behavior, which interferes with endocrine functions in both humans and aquatic species, these types of compounds have been recognized as major polluting agents in wastewater effluents. Therefore, the development of efficient and sustainable removal methods for these emerging contaminants is essential. Photocatalytic removal of emerging contaminants using silver carbonate (Ag2CO3)-based photocatalyst is a promising process due to the unique characteristics of this catalyst, such as absorption of a larger fraction of the solar spectrum, wide band gap, non-toxicity, and low cost. The photocatalytic performance of Ag2CO3 has recently been improved through the doping of elements and optimization variation of operational parameters resulting in decreasing the rate of electron–hole pair recombination and an increase in the semiconductor’s excitation state efficiency, which enables the degradation of contaminants under UV or visible light exposure. This review summarized some of the relevant investigations related to Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials for EDC removal from water. The inclusion of Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials in the water recovery procedure suggests that the creation of a cutting-edge protocol is essential for successfully eliminating EDCs from the ecosystem.

Hydrogel/β-FeOOH-Coated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Membranes with Superhydrophilicity/Underwater Superoleophobicity Facilely Fabricated via an Aqueous Approach for Multifunctional Applications

Hydrogel coatings that can endow various substrates with superior properties (e.g., biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, and lubricity) have wide applications in the fields of oil/water separation, antifouling, anti-bioadhesion, etc. Currently, the engineering of multifunctional hydrogel-coated materials with superwettability and water purification property using a simple and sustainable strategy is still largely uninvestigated but has a beneficial effect on the world. Herein, we successfully prepared poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) hydrogel/β-FeOOH-coated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF/PAMPS/β-FeOOH) membrane through free-radical polymerization and the in situ mineralization process. In this work, owing to the combination of hydrophilic PAMPS hydrogel coating and β-FeOOH nanorods anchored onto PVDF membrane, the resultant PVDF/PAMPS/β-FeOOH membrane achieved outstanding superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity. Moreover, the membrane not only effectively separated surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions, but also possessed a long-term use capacity. In addition, excellent photocatalytic activity against organic pollutants was demonstrated so that the PVDF/PAMPS/β-FeOOH membrane could be utilized to deal with wastewater. It is envisioned that these hydrogel/β-FeOOH-coated PVDF membranes have versatile applications in the fields of oil/water separation and wastewater purification.

A Review on Resource Utilization of Spent V-W-Ti Based Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalysts

To address the environmental pollution caused by nitrogen oxides, V₂O₅-WO₃/TiO₂ is widely used as a catalyst based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. However, spent SCR catalysts pose a potential hazard to the environment due to the presence of heavy metals. This problem continues to plague countries with predominantly thermal power generation, and landfills as the dominant disposal method wastes significant metal resources. Previous research into the recovery of these metal resources has received considerable attention. Here, we summarise the methods of recovery and find that research trends are beginning to move towards improving the added value of recovered products. One very promising application is photocatalysts; however, the atomic efficiency of current methods is not satisfactory. Therefore, this review first focuses on the regeneration of spent SCR catalysts and the processes used for elemental extraction to clarify what forms of V, W and Ti can be obtained from existing processes. This is followed by providing directions for the conversion of spent SCR catalysts into photocatalysts with improvements based on such processes. From a different perspective, this also provides a new resource for photocatalysts and is expected to significantly reduce the cost of photocatalyst production.

Nano-architectural design of TiO2 for high performance photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant: A review

In the past several decades, significant efforts have been paid toward photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in environmental research. During the past years, titanium dioxide nano-architectures (TiO₂ NAs) have been widely used in water purification applications with photocatalytic degradation processes under Uv/Vis light illumination. Photocatalysis process with nano-architectural design of TiO₂ is viewed as an efficient procedure for directly channeling solar energy into water treatment reactions. The considerable band-gap values and the subsequent short life time of photo-generated charge carriers are showed among the limitations of this approach. One of these effective efforts is the using of oxidation processes with advance semiconductor photocatalyst NAs for degradation the organic pollutants under UV/Vis irradiation. Among them, nano-architectural design of TiO₂ photocatalyst (such as Janus, yolk-shell (Y@S), hollow microspheres (HMSs) and nano-belt) is an effective way to improve oxidation processes for increasing photocatalytic activity in water treatment applications. In the light of the above issues, this study tends to provide a critical overview of the used strategies for preparing TiO₂ photocatalysts with desirable physicochemical properties like enhanced absorption of light, low density, high surface area, photo-stability, and charge-carrier behavior. Among the various nanoarchitectural design of TiO₂, the Y@S and HMSs have created a great appeal given their considerable large surface area, low density, homogeneous catalytic environment, favorable light harvesting properties, and enhanced molecular diffusion kinetics of the particles. In this review was summarized the developments that have been made for nano-architectural design of TiO2 photocatalyst. Additional focus is placed on the realization of interfacial charge and the possibility of achieving charge carriers separation for these NAs as electron migration is the extremely important factor for increasing the photocatalytic activity.

Polymer Composite-Based Materials with Photocatalytic Applications in Wastewater Organic Pollutant Removal: A Mini Review

The development of new technologies using nanomaterials has allowed scientists to design advanced processes with many applications in environmental protection, energy production and storage, and medicinal bio-mediated processes. Due to their significant potential applications in different branches of science, the development of new polymer composites represents a priority, especially for nano-technological processes. Interest in polymeric composites was outlined by the synthesis of a large number of nano- or mezzo-scale materials with targeted functional properties for polymer matrix hybridization. The present mini review explores some of the most representative and recent papers reporting the photocatalytic activity of polymer composites toward different organic compounds (dyes, pharmaceutically active molecules, phenol, etc.). The polymer composites were divided based on their composition and photocatalytic activity. TiO2- and ZnO-based polymeric composites have been described here in light of their photocatalytic activity toward different pollutants, such as rhodamine B, phenol, or methyl orange. Polymeric composites based on WO3, Fe2O3, or Bi2MoO6 were also described. The influence of different polymeric composites and photocatalytic parameters (light spectra and intensity, pollutant molecule and concentration, irradiation time, and photocatalyst dosage) on the overall photocatalytic efficiency indicates that semiconductor (TiO2, ZnO, etc.) insertion in the polymeric matrix can tune the photocatalytic activity without compromising the structural integrity. Future perspectives and limitations are outlined considering the systematic and targeted description of the reported results. Adopting green route synthesis and application can add economic and scientific value to the knowledgebase by promoting technological development based on photocatalytic designs.

In-Situ Fabricating V2O5/TiO2-Carbon Heterojunction from Ti3C2 MXene as Highly Active Visible-Light Photocatalyst

Titanium dioxide is a mainstream photocatalyst, but it still confronts great obstacles of poor visible light absorption and rapid recombination rate of photogenerated carriers. Herein, we describe the design of a highly active visible-light photocatalytic system of graphited carbon layers anchored V2O5/TiO2 heterojunctions derived from Ti3C2 MXene, which demonstrates about 4.58 and 2.79 times higher degradation activity of MB under visible light (λ > 420 nm) than pure V2O5 and TiO2-carbon. Combined with the characterization results, the formed V2O5/TiO2 heterojunction promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers, while the graphitized carbon derived from MXene acts as an electronic reservoir to enhance the absorption of visible light. The ESR results show that superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals are the main active species in the reaction system. Therefore, we propose a possible mechanism model to provide a feasible idea for the subsequent design of high-efficiency photocatalysts for environmental treatment.

Applications of Heterogeneous Photocatalysis to the Degradation of Oxytetracycline in Water: A Review

Photocatalytic processes are being studied extensively as potential advanced wastewater treatments for the removal of pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other recalcitrant micropollutants from the effluents of conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a widespread antibiotic which is frequently detected in surface water bodies as a recalcitrant and persistent micropollutant. This review provides an update on advances in heterogeneous photocatalysis for the degradation of OTC in water under UV light, sunlight and visible-light irradiation. Photocatalysts based on pure semiconducting oxides are rarely used, due to the problem of rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs. To overcome this issue, a good strategy could be the coupling of two different semiconducting compounds with different conduction and valence bands. Several methods are described to enhance the performances of catalysts, such as doping of the oxide with metal and/or non-metal elements, surface functionalization, composites and nano-heterojunction. Furthermore, a discussion on non-oxidic photocatalysts is briefly provided, focusing on the application of graphene-based nanocomposites for the effective treatment of OTC.

Effect of magnetic field on improvement of photocatalytic performance of V2O5/TiO2 nanoheterostructure films prepared by sparking method

Our porous V2O5/TiO2 nanoheterostructure films (with a Ti/V atomic ratio of 1:1) were fabricated via a single-step sparking method using a strong magnetic field (0.5 T) without annealing requirement for the first time. We found that the magnetic flux arrangement has effect on film crystallization, unique morphology, large specific surface area, and surprisingly controllable phase structure of the films. An amorphous TV film was transformed to the TiO2 (anatase/rutile) phase (for TVN) and V2O5-VO2 mixed-phase (for TVH) without destroying the mesopores from an annealing process. Moreover, the TVH sample able to improve the degradation rate up to 270% compared with pre-annealed TV films and up to 30% with post-annealed (400 °C) TVA films. In this paper, the influence of magnetic flux arrangement on structural, morphological, optical, and photocatalytic properties of prepared sample have been investigated and reported.

Synergistic effects of Tin sulfide Nitrogen-doped titania Nanobelt-Modified graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets with outstanding photocatalytic activity

Designing efficient ternary nanostructures is a feasible approach for energy production under simulated solar irradiation. In this study, excellent photoexcited charge carrier separation and enhanced visible-light response were achieved with nitrogen-doped titania nanobelts (N-TNBs), whose 1D geometry facilitated the fabrication of a heterostructure with SnS₂ on the surface of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄). We established the design of SnS₂@N-TNB and SnS₂@N-TNB/g-C₃N₄ heterostructures by in situ hydrothermal and ultrasonication processes, and achieved commendable simulated solar light driven photocatalytic H₂ generation. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis revealed a red shift in the absorption spectra of the SnS₂@N-TNB and SnS₂@N-TNB/g-C₃N₄ samples. The H₂ produced via SnS₂@N-TNB-10/g-C₃N₄ (6730.8 µmol/g/h) was 2.6 times higher than that produced by SnS₂@N-TNB (2515.1 µmol/g/h), and 299 times higher than that produced by N-TNB (22.5 µmol/g/h). The improved photocatalytic H₂ production was attributed to the maximum interface contact between SnS₂@N-TNB and g-C₃N₄, and to the improved visible-light absorption and effective charge-carrier separation. Therefore, the present study provides novel insights for combining the advantages of ternary materials to improve the conversion of solar energy to H₂ fuel.

One-step in situ formation of 3D hollow sphere-like V2O5 incorporated Ni3V2O8 hybrids with enhanced photocatalytic performance

3-D hollow sphere-like Ni₃V₂O₈ immobilizing V₂O₅ nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via in situ recrystallization method without any template. The compact contact between V₂O₅ and Ni₃V₂O₈ ensuring the photo-inducted carriers fast transport, which would be beneficial for inhibiting recombination rate of electron-hole (e^-/h⁺) pairs. Moreover, the hollow sphere-like structure composed of the smaller nanoparticle could effectively improve of visible light capture capacity (multiple scattering for hollow architectures). Benefiting the synergistic promoting effect of the suitable heterojunction and the fascinating 3D hollow feature, the V₂O₅@Ni₃V₂O₈ indicated significantly degradation performance when evaluated as photocatalyst for degradation antibiotics and chlorophenols under visible light irradiation. Impressively, the 2-V₂O₅@Ni₃V₂O₈ heterojunction deliver the optimal degradation efficiency for TC (OTC) and 2,4-DCP (4-CP) were 90.0% (~91.2%) and 92.6% (~90.0%), respectively. The appearance mechanism for the enhancement photocatalytic performance was also elucidated in detail. The facile strategy provides a novel insight into the designing of the photocatalyst with advantages of charges separation and light-harvesting for degradation of contaminants in wastewater.

Recent advances in photocatalytic decomposition of water and pollutants for sustainable application

Photoinduced reduction and oxidation, the important processes in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation, have generated increasing interest to address the energy and environmental issues. In this review, the recent developments in bandgap and interfacial engineering for enhanced light absorption, efficient charge separation and interfacial reaction are focused toward the applications in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation. In photoinduced reduction for hydrogen evolution, three major strategies are discussed: cocatalysts, sacrificial agents and heterojunctions. In photoinduced oxidation for organic degradation, three types of emerging pollutants of current concerns are highlighted: organic dyes, pharmaceuticals and volatile organic compounds. The key challenges of promising photocatalysts are discussed for future development and practical application.

Immobilization of MIL-88(Fe) anchored TiO2-chitosan(2D/2D) hybrid nanocomposite for the degradation of organophosphate pesticide: Characterization, mechanism and degradation intermediates

In this study, we have rationally designed and grafted a bio-assisted 2D/2D TiO₂/MIL-88(Fe) (TCS@MOF) heterojunction by growing granular TiO₂ on the surface of MIL-88(Fe) nanosheet, as hybrid photocatalyst. The hierarchical TCS@MOF composite was prepared via the one-pot solvothermal process and employed for monocrotophos (MCP) degradation under visible light region, since its persistent nature on soil and water causes major threat to the environment. The TCS@MOF promotes a number of packed high-speed nano-tunnels in the (p-n) heterojunctions, which significantly enhance the migration of photo-induced electrons (e^-) and holes (h⁺), respectively and thus limits the charge recombination of e^-s. The optimized photocatalyst achieves significant catalytic activity of ~98.79% for the degradation of MCP within 30 min of irradiation. The prominent oxidative radicals namely •OH, •O₂^- etc., were involved in the oxidation of organic pesticide. Besides, TCS@MOF exhibits outstanding stability even after five repetitive cycles for the oxidation of MCP with a negligible decrease in photo-activity. The proposed mechanism and oxidative pathways of MCP were rationally deduced in detail subject to experimental results. The mechanism renders insight into the oxidation and consequent bond rupture of pollutant as well as into the formation of products such as H₂O, CO₂, etc. This report unveils a novel architecture of proficiently optimized TCS@MOF material structure for the perceptive oxidation of organic contaminants.

Porous V2O5/TiO2 Nanoheterostructure Films with Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance Prepared by the Sparking Method

Porous V2O5/TiO2 nanoheterostructure films with different atomic ratios of Ti/V (4:1, 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2) were synthesized by a sparking method for the first time. The sparking method, which is a simple and cost-effective process, can synthesize highly porous and composite films in one step. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images revealed the porosity morphology of all prepared samples. V2O5/TiO2 nanoheterostructure films were confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The secondary particle size and band gap of the samples were highly correlated to the V2O5 proportion, resulting in enhanced visible-light absorbance. V2O5/TiO2 nanoheterostructure films at an atomic ratio of 1:1 showed the highest photocatalytic performance, which improved the degradation rate up to 24% compared to pure TiO2 film. It is believed that the formed nanoheterostructure and greater portion of V4+ ions are reflected by this ratio.
