Hot-pressed polyelectrolyte complexes as novel alkaline stable monovalent-ion selective anion exchange membranes

Distribution of polyelectrolytes and counterions upon polyelectrolyte complexation

HYPOTHESIS

Understanding polyelectrolyte complexation remains limited due to the absence of a systematic methodology for analyzing the distribution of components between the polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) and the dilute phases.

EXPERIMENTS

We developed a methodology based on NMR to quantify all components of solid-like PECs and their supernatant phases formed by mixing different ratios of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid)-sodium salt (PAA). This approach allowed for determining relative and absolute concentrations of polyelectrolytes in both phases by 1H NMR studies. Using 23Na and 35Cl NMR spectroscopy we measured the concentration of counterions in both phases.

FINDINGS

Regardless of the mixing ratio of the polyelectrolytes the PEC is charge-stoichiometric, and any excess polyelectrolytes to achieve charge stoichiometry remains in the supernatant phase. The majority of counterions were found in the supernatant phase, confirming counterion release being a major thermodynamic driving force for PEC formation. The counterion concentrations in the PEC phase were approximately twice as high as in the supernatant phase. The complete mass balance of PEC formation could be determined and translated into a molecular picture. It appears that PAH is fully charged, while PAA is more protonated, so less charged, and some 10% extrinsic PAH-Cl- pairs are present in the complex.

Control over Charge Density by Tuning the Polyelectrolyte Type and Monomer Ratio in Saloplastic-Based Ion-Exchange Membranes

Membranes based on polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) can now be prepared through several sustainable, organic solvent-free approaches. A recently developed approach allows PECs made by stoichiometric mixing of polyelectrolytes to be hot-pressed into dense saloplastics, which then function as ion-exchange membranes. An important advantage of PECs is that tuning their properties can provide significant control over the properties of the fabricated materials, and thus over their separation properties. This work studies the effects of two key parameters─(a) ratio of mixing and (b) choice of polyelectrolytes─on the mechanical, material, and separation properties of their corresponding hot-pressed saloplastic-based ion-exchange membranes. By varying these two main parameters, charge density─the key property of any IEM─was found to be controllable. While studying several systems, including strong/strong, strong/weak, and weak/weak combinations of polyelectrolytes, it was observed that not all systems could be processed into saloplastic membranes. For the processable systems, expected trends were observed where a higher excess of one polyelectrolyte would lead to a more charged system, resulting in higher water uptake and better permselectivities. An anomaly was the polystyrenesulfonate-polyvinylamine system, which showed an opposite trend with a higher polycation ratio, leading to a more negative charge. Overall, we have found that it is possible to successfully fabricate saloplastic-based anion- and cation-exchange membranes with tunable charge densities through careful choice of polyelectrolyte combination and ratio of mixing.

Novel triazine-based cationic covalent organic polymers for highly efficient and selective removal of selenate from contaminated water

Selenium (Se) removal from contaminated water has become a major environmental problem in recent years. Designing efficient and selective materials for selenium adsorption is urgent and still represents a great challenge. Herein, two novel cationic covalent triazine frameworks (CTFS-Cl and CTFL-Cl) are developed for the first time and employed as a new class of Se adsorbents. The results from systematic adsorption experiments indicate that these materials can adsorb SeO₄^2- in a wide range of pH values (2-11) with fast kinetics (5 min), outstanding adsorption capacity, and excellent selectivity over other competing anions. The maximum adsorption capacity achieved (149.3 mg/g by CTFS-Cl) constitutes one of the highest values among the organic polymeric materials. More importantly, after a single step adsorption, these materials can reduce the Se concentrations to lower than 10 μg/L, the lowest drinking water standard in the world. The adsorption mechanism was probed by XPS technique, EDS analysis, adsorption experiments, and DFT calculations, which reveals that anion exchange between Cl^- and SeO₄^2- is the main driving force for Se adsorption. Additionally, CTFS-Cl and CTFL-Cl perform well toward real contaminated river water sample with the residual Se being less than 8.49 μg/L. This work demonstrates the excellent performance of CTFs-based materials with great application prospect for Se removal in contaminated water treatment.

Subnanometer Ion Channel Anion Exchange Membranes Having a Rigid Benzimidazole Structure for Selective Anion Separation

Ion-conductive polymers having a well-defined phase-separated structure show the potential application of separating mono- and bivalent ion separation. In this work, three side-chain-type poly(arylene ether sulfone)-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been fabricated to investigate the effect of the stiffness of the polymer backbone within AEMs on the Cl^-/NO₃^- and Cl^-/SO₄^2- separation performance. Our investigations via small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), positron annihilation, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrate that the as-prepared AEM with a rigid benzimidazole structure in the backbone bears subnanometer ion channels resulting from the arrangement of the rigid polymer backbone. In particular, SAXS results demonstrate that the rigid benzimidazole-containing AEM in the wet state has an ion cluster size of 0.548 nm, which is smaller than that of an AEM with alkyl segments in the backbone (0.760 nm). Thus, in the electrodialysis (ED) process, the former exhibits a superior capacity of separating Cl^-/SO₄^2- ions relative to latter. Nevertheless, the benzimidazole-containing AEM shows an inability to separate the Cl^-/NO₃^- ions, which is possibly due to the similar ion size of the two. The higher rotational energy barrier (4.3 × 10^-3 Hartree) of benzimidazole units and the smaller polymer matrix free-volume (0.636%) in the AEM significantly contribute to the construction of smaller ion channels. As a result, it is believed that the rigid benzimidazole structure of this kind is a benefit to the construction of stable subnanometer ion channels in the AEM that can selectively separate ions with different sizes.

A comprehensive review on the synthesis and applications of ion exchange membranes

Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are undergoing prosperous development in recent years. More than 30,000 papers which are indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) have been published on IEMs during the past twenty years (2001-2020). Especially, more than 3000 papers are published in the year of 2020, revealing researchers' great interest in this area. This paper firstly reviews the different types (e.g., cation exchange membrane, anion exchange membrane, proton exchange membrane, bipolar membrane) and electrochemical properties (e.g., permselectivity, electrical resistance/ionic conductivity) of IEMs and the corresponding working principles, followed by membrane synthesis methods, including the common solution casting method. Especially, as a promising future direction, green synthesis is critically discussed. IEMs are extensively applied in various applications, which can be generalized into two big categories, where the water-based category mainly includes electrodialysis, diffusion dialysis and membrane capacitive deionization, while the energy-based category mainly includes reverse electrodialysis, fuel cells, redox flow battery and electrolysis for hydrogen production. These applications are comprehensively discussed in this paper. This review may open new possibilities for the future development of IEMs.

Polyelectrolytes as Building Blocks for Next-Generation Membranes with Advanced Functionalities

The global society is in a transition, where dealing with climate change and water scarcity are important challenges. More efficient separations of chemical species are essential to reduce energy consumption and to provide more reliable access to clean water. Here, membranes with advanced functionalities that go beyond standard separation properties can play a key role. This includes relevant functionalities, such as stimuli-responsiveness, fouling control, stability, specific selectivity, sustainability, and antimicrobial activity. Polyelectrolytes and their complexes are an especially promising system to provide advanced membrane functionalities. Here, we have reviewed recent work where advanced membrane properties stem directly from the material properties provided by polyelectrolytes. This work highlights the versatility of polyelectrolyte-based membrane modifications, where polyelectrolytes are not only applied as single layers, including brushes, but also as more complex polyelectrolyte multilayers on both porous membrane supports and dense membranes. Moreover, free-standing membranes can also be produced completely from aqueous polyelectrolyte solutions allowing much more sustainable approaches to membrane fabrication. The Review demonstrates the promise that polyelectrolytes and their complexes hold for next-generation membranes with advanced properties, while it also provides a clear outlook on the future of this promising field.
