Highly-efficient and stable photocatalytic activity of lead-free Cs2AgInCl6 double perovskite for organic pollutant degradation

Metal/Covalent Organic Framework Encapsulated Lead-Free Halide Perovskite Hybrid Nanocatalysts: Multifunctional Applications, Design, Recent Trends, Challenges, and Prospects

Perovskites are bringing revolutionization in a various fields due to their exceptional properties and crystalline structure. Most specifically, halide perovskites (HPs), lead-free halide perovskites (LFHPs), and halide perovskite quantum dots (HPs QDs) are becoming hotspots due to their unique optoelectronic properties, low cost, and simple processing. HPs QDs, in particular, have excellent photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications because of their tunable emission, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), effective charge separation, and low cost. However, practical applications of the HPs QDs family have some limitations such as degradation, instability, and deep trap states within the bandgap, structural inflexibility, scalability, inconsistent reproducibility, and environmental concerns, which can be covered by encapsulating HPs QDs into porous materials like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) that offer protection, prevention of aggregation, tunable optical properties, flexibility in structure, enhanced biocompatibility, improved stability under harsh conditions, consistency in production quality, and efficient charge separation. These advantages of MOFs-COFs help HPs QDs harness their full potential for various applications. This review mainly consists of three parts. The first portion discusses the perovskites, halide perovskites, lead-free perovskites, and halide perovskite quantum dots. In the second portion, we explore MOFs and COFs. In the third portion, particular emphasis is given to a thorough evaluation of the development of HPs QDs@MOFs-COFs based materials for comprehensive investigations for next-generation materials intended for diverse technological applications, such as CO2 conversion, pollutant degradation, hydrogen generation, batteries, gas sensing, and solar cells. Finally, this review will open a new gateway for the synthesis of perovskite-based quantum dots.

Ultrathin 2D/2D ZnIn2S4/La2Ti2O7 nanosheets with a Z-scheme heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Layered lanthanum titanate (La2Ti2O7) perovskite is a good photocatalytic material owing to its high stability, strong redox ability, and non-toxicity. However, its inherent wide bandgap limits its application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Therefore, combining La2Ti2O7 with two-dimensional (2D) narrow-bandgap semiconductors to form 2D/2D layered structures is the preferred strategy to improve its photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel 2D/2D ZnIn2S4/La2Ti2O7 Z-scheme heterojunction was prepared through a solvothermal method. The experimental results show that when the molar ratio of La2Ti2O7 to ZnIn2S4 is 1 : 4, the hydrogen evolution rate of the composite under ultraviolet-visible light reaches 6.97 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 3.5 times higher than that of the pure ZnIn2S4. The results of the morphological characterization studies of the samples and the photoelectrochemical measurements show that channels for the rapid transfer of carriers are generated by the unique 2D/2D structure of these samples, and the separation and migration efficiency of the photogenerated carriers significantly improved due to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction. This study provides useful insights into the modulation of wide-bandgap semiconductors and research into solar energy conversion.

Designing and synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals: a promising wide-spectrum solar light-responsive photocatalyst and lead ion sensor

Perovskites are an emerging material with a variety of applications, ranging from their solar light conversion capability to their sensing efficiency. In current study, perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) were designed using theoretical density functional theory (DFT) analysis. Moreover, the theoretically designed PNCs were fabricated and confirmed by various characterization techniques. The calculated optical bandgap from UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra were 2.15 and 2.05 eV, respectively. The average crystallite size of PNCs calculated from Scherrer equation was 15.18 nm, and point of zero charge (PZC) was obtained at pH 8. The maximum eosin B (EB) removal efficiency by PNCs was 99.56% at optimized conditions following first-order kinetics with 0.98 R2 value. The goodness of the response surface methodology (RSM) model was confirmed from analysis of variance (ANOVA), with the experimental F value (named after Ronald Fisher) of 194.66 being greater than the critical F value F0.05, 14, 14 = 2.48 and a lack of fit value of 0.0587. The Stern-Volmer equation with a larger Ksv value of 1.303710 × 10 6 for Pb2+ suggests its greater sensitivity for Pb2+ among the different metals tested.

Ag@MUT-16 nanocomposite as a Fenton-like and plasmonic photocatalyst for degradation of Quinoline Yellow under visible light

A new cobalt-based metal-organic framework with the chemical formula of [Co2(DClTPA)2(DABCO)]·(DMF)4 (MUT-16) containing 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid (DClTPA) has been designed and prepared through a solvothermal method. MUT-16 (MUT = Materials from University of Tehran) crystallized in a tetragonal system with I41/acd space group, based on single-crystal X-ray analysis. The Ag@MUT-16 nanocomposite was prepared using Ag nanoparticles (NPs) loaded into/onto porous MUT-16via photoreduction route (PR). The MUT-16 and Ag@MUT-16 were characterized using various techniques, such as PXRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA, DRS, PL, EIS, and Mott-Schottky measurements. The Ag@MUT-16 nanocomposite showed photocatalytic activity of 87.75% in the degradation of Quinoline Yellow (QY) after 30 min under visible light irradiation. The distinctive characteristics of the Ag@MUT-16 nanocomposite, such as the Fenton-like effect of Co2+ ions, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag NPs, Schottky junction at interfaces between Ag NPs and MUT-16, and reduction of electron-hole recombination through electron trapping by Ag NPs as co-catalyst, all play significant roles in the photocatalytic degradation of Quinoline Yellow (QY).

PVP Passivated δ-CsPbI3: Vacancy Induced Visible-Light Absorption and Efficient Photocatalysis

The aqueous instability of halide perovskite seriously hinders its direct application in water as a potential photocatalyst. Here, we prepared a new type of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) passivated δ-CsPbI3 (δ-CsPbI3@PVP) microcrystal by a facile method. This material can be uniformly dispersed in water and stably maintain its crystal structure for a long time, breaking through the bottleneck of halide perovskite photocatalysis in water. Under visible light, δ-CsPbI3@PVP can almost completely photodegrade organic dyes (including Rhodamine B, methylene blue, and crystal violet) in only 20 min. The efficient photocatalytic activity is attributed to the enhanced visible light absorption arising from PbI2 defects in δ-CsPbI3@PVP and the intrinsic low photoluminescence quantum yield of δ-CsPbI3, which induces efficient light absorption and photocatalytic activity. We highlight δ-CsPbI3@PVP as an effective aqueous photocatalyst, and this study provides new insights into how to exploit the potential of halide perovskite in photocatalytic applications.

Structural Modification Strategies, Interfacial Charge-Carrier Dynamics, and Solar Energy Conversion Applications of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Photocatalysts

Over the past few decades, organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) as novel photocatalyst materials have attracted intensive attention for an impressive variety of photocatalytic applications due to their excellent photophysical (chemical) properties. Regarding practical application and future commercialization, the air-water stability and photocatalytic performance of OIHPs need to be further improved. Accordingly, studying modification strategies and interfacial interaction mechanisms is crucial. In this review, the current progress in the development and photocatalytic fundamentals of OIHPs is summarized. Furthermore, the structural modification strategies of OIHPs, including dimensionality control, heterojunction design, encapsulation techniques, and so on for the enhancement of charge-carrier transfer and the enlargement of long-term stability, are elucidated. Subsequently, the interfacial mechanisms and charge-carrier dynamics of OIHPs during the photocatalytic process are systematically specified and classified via diverse photophysical and electrochemical characterization methods, such as time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, transient photocurrent densities, and so forth. Eventually, various photocatalytic applications of OIHPs, including hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and photocatalytic conversion of organic matter.

Strategies for improving the stability of perovskite for photocatalysis: A review of recent progress

Photocatalysis is currently a hot research field, which provides promising processes to produce green energy sources and other useful products, thus eventually benefiting carbon emission reduction and leading to a low-carbon future. The development and application of stable and efficient photocatalytic materials is one of the main technical bottlenecks in the field of photocatalysis. Perovskite has excellent performance in the fields of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), organic synthesis and pollutant degradation due to its unique structure, flexibility and resulting excellent photoelectric and catalytic properties. The stability problems caused by perovskite's susceptibility to environmental influences hinder its further application in the field of photocatalysis. Therefore, this paper innovatively summarizes and analyzes the existing methods and strategies to improve the stability of perovskite in the field of photocatalysis. Specifically, (i) component engineering, (ii) morphological control, (iii) hybridization and encapsulation are thought to improve the stability of perovskites while improving photocatalytic efficiency. Finally, the challenges and prospects of perovskite photocatalysts are discussed, which provides constructive thinking for the potential application of perovskite photocatalysts.

Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dot-Passivated δ-Phase CsPbI3: A Water-Stable Photocatalytic Adjuvant to Degrade Rhodamine B

Inorganic halide perovskite CsPbI3 is highly promising in the photocatalytic field for its strong absorption of UV and visible light. Among the crystal phases of CsPbI3, the δ-phase as the most aqueous stability; however, directly using it in water is still not applicable, thus limiting its dye photodegradation applications in aqueous solutions. Via adopting nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) as surfactants to prepare δ-phase CsPbI3 nanocrystals, we obtained a water-stable material, NGQDs-CsPbI3. Such a material can be well dispersed in water for a month without obvious deterioration. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometer characterizations showed that NGQDs-CsPbI3 is also a δ-phase CsPbI3 after NGQD coating. The ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra indicated that compared to δ-CsPbI3, NGQDs-CsPbI3 has an obvious absorption enhancement of visible light, especially near the wavelength around 521 nm. The good dispersity and improved visible-light absorption of NGQDs-CsPbI3 benefit their aqueous photocatalytic applications. NGQDs-CsPbI3 alone can photodegrade 67% rhodamine B (RhB) in water, while after compositing with TiO2, NGQDs-CsPbI3/TiO2 exhibits excellent visible-light photocatalytic ability, namely, it photodegraded 96% RhB in 4 h. The strong absorption of NGQDs-CsPbI3 in the visible region and effective transfer of photogenerated carriers from NGQDs-CsPbI3 to TiO2 play the key roles in dye photodegradation. We highlight NGQDs-CsPbI3 as a water-stable halide perovskite material and effective photocatalytic adjuvant.

Halides and oxyhalides-based photocatalysts for abatement of organic water contaminants - An overview

Recently, halides (silver halides, AgX; perosvkite halides, ABX₃) and oxyhalides (bismuth oxyhalides, BiOX) based nanomaterials are noticeable photocatalysts in the degradation of organic water pollutants. Therefore, we review the recent reports to explore improvement strategies adopted in AgX, ABX₃ and BiOX (X = Cl, Br and I)-based photocatalysts in water pollution remediation. Herein, the photocatalytic degradation performances of each type of these photocatalysts were discussed. Strategies such as tailoring the morphology, crystallographic facet exposure, surface area, band structure, and creation of surface defects to improve photocatalytic activities of pure halides and BiOCl photocatalysts are emphasized. Other strategies like metal ion and/or non-metal doping and construction of composites, adopted in these photocatalysts were also reviewed. Furthermore, the way of production of active radicals by these photocatalysts under ultraviolet/visible light source is highlighted. The deciding factors such as structure of pollutant, light sources and other parameters on the photocatalytic performances of these materials were also explored. Based on this literature survey, the need of further research on AgX, ABX₃ and BiOX-based photocatalysts were suggested. This review might be beneficial for researchers who are working in halides and oxyhalides-based photocatalysis for water treatment.

Theoretical exploration of mechanical, electronic structure and optical properties of aluminium based double halide perovskite

The mechanical, electronic structure and optical properties of aluminium based double halide perovskite were calculated by density functional theory. The formation energy and elastic constant confirm the stability of the cubic perovskite materials. The materials are all ductile and suitable for flexible photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. The band gap values vary from 0.773 eV to 3.430 eV, exactly corresponding to the range of ideal band gap values for good photoresponse. The band structure analysis shows that all the materials possess small effective mass, which indicates a good transport of carriers. And these materials have a broad energy range of optical absorption for utilization and a detector of photons. Moreover, less expensive K₂AgAlBr₆ were investigated for comparison with materials containing a cesium element, and according to the results, is also a candidate for photoelectronic devices due to the similar properties.

M₂AgAlX₆ (M = Cs, Rb and K, X = Cl, Br and I) is a stable vacancy ordered double halide perovskite direct band gap semiconductor material with good absorption of near-ultraviolet and short-wavelength visible light.

Molybdenum disulfide loading on a Z-scheme graphitic carbon nitride and lanthanum nickelate heterojunction for enhanced photocatalysis: Interfacial charge transfer and mechanistic insights

Interfacial design and the co-catalyst effect are considered to be effective to achieve separation and transport of photogenerated carriers in composite photocatalysts. In this study, a Z-scheme heterojunction was successfully combined with a co-catalyst to achieve a highly efficient LaNiO₃/g-C₃N₄/MoS₂ photocatalyst. MoS₂ flakes were loaded on a hybrid material surface, which was formed by LaNiO₃ nanocubes embedded on layered g-C₃N₄, and a good heterostructure with multiple attachment sites was obtained. Experimental studies confirmed that the Z-scheme heterojunction completely preserves the strong redox ability of the photogenerated electrons and holes. As a cocatalyst, MoS₂ further promoted interfacial charge separation and transport. The synergistic effect of the Z-scheme heterojunction and co-catalyst effectively realized the transfer of photogenerated carriers from "slow transfer" to "high transfer" and promoted water decomposition and pollutant degradation. Results revealed that under simulated sunlight irradiation, LaNiO₃/g-C₃N₄/MoS₂ composites exhibit superior hydrogen evolution of 45.1 μmol h^-1, which is 19.1 times that of g-C₃N₄ and 4.9 times that of LaNiO₃/g-C₃N₄, respectively. Moreover, the LaNiO₃/g-C₃N₄/MoS₂ Z-scheme photocatalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for antibiotic degradation and heavy-metal ion reduction under visible light. This study might provide some insights into the development of photocatalysts for solar energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Promotion effect of free Ag+ ions on photocatalytic dechlorination processes

Free silver ions (Ag+) in the solution exhibit enhanced photocatalytic dechlorination processes of organic chloride, including 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, over PhC2Cu under visible light irradiation.

Three-dimensional porous MoS2 nanobox embedded g-C3N4@TiO2 architecture for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant

Herein, a simple, highly efficient and stable MoS₂ nanobox embedded graphitic-C₃N₄@TiO₂ (g-CN@TiO₂) nanoarchitecture was synthesized by a facile solvothermal approach. The nano-hybrid photocatalyst was constructed by TiO₂ nanoparticles anchored on the surface of g-CN nanosheets. Then highly crystalline three-dimensional porous MoS₂ nanobox was homogeneously distributed on the g-CN@TiO₂ surface. The g-CN@TiO₂/MoS₂ hybrid achieved a high photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 97.5% for methylene blue (MB) dye pollutant under visible-light irradiant in an hour which was much better than TiO₂@MoS_2, g-CN@TiO_2, MoS_2, TiO₂ and g-CN. Furthermore, the reaction rate (k) value of g-CN@TiO₂/MoS₂ for MB dye is as high as 3.18 X 10^-2 min^-1, which is ~ 2.65 times better than those of g-CN@TiO₂ and MoS₂. This work presents a rational structure design, interfacial construction and suitable band gap strategy to synthesize advanced nano-hybrid photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutant with excellent performance and long-term stability.
