Synthesis of a 2D copper(II)-carboxylate framework having ultrafast adsorption of organic dyes

An Oxalato-Bridged Cu(II)-Based 1D Polymer Chain: Synthesis, Structure, and Adsorption of Organic Dyes

In the current research, we prepared a polymeric framework, {[Cu(C2O4)(C10H8N2)]·H2O·0.67(CH3OH)]}n (1) (where C2O4 = oxalic acid; C10H8N2 = 2,2-bipyridine), and explored this compound for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The crystal structure of the compound consists of a Cu(ox)(bpy) unit connected via oxalate to form a 1D polymeric chain. This polymeric chain has adsorption capacities of 194.0 and 167.3 mg/g for MB and MO, respectively. The removal rate is estimated to be 77.6% and 66.9% for MB and MO, respectively. The plausible mechanisms for adsorption are electrostatic, π-π interaction, and OH-π interaction for dye stickiness. The adsorbent surface exhibits a negative charge that produces the electrostatic interaction, resulting in excellent adsorption efficiency at pH 7 and 8. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model is selected for the adsorption of MB and MO on the adsorbent. The reported compound has remarkable efficiency for sorption of organic dyes and can be useful in wastewater treatment.

The antibacterial activity of three zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks and zinc oxide nanoparticles derived from them

Zinc has been widely studied for its antibacterial properties due to its low toxicity, availability, and low cost. This research focused on analysing the antibacterial effects of three types of MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) with zinc as the central metal: ZIF-4, ZIF-7, and ZIF-8. The study found that ZIF-8 had the strongest antibacterial effect, while ZIF-7 had the weakest among them. These findings were consistent with the results of the ICP (inductively coupled plasma) analysis, which measured the amount of zinc released. Additionally, the antibacterial effect of ZIF-8 was found to be higher than that of zinc oxide species obtained from calcination of the compounds. Among the zinc oxide samples, ZnO nanoparticles which derived from ZIF-4 showed the highest antibacterial activity.

Applications of covalent organic frameworks for the elimination of dyes from wastewater: A state-of-the-arts review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are class of porous coordination polymers made up of organic building blocks joined together by covalent bonding through thermodynamic and controlled reversible polymerization reactions. This review discussed versatile applications of COFs for remediation of wastewater containing dyes, emphasizing the advantages of both pristine and modified materials in adsorption, membrane separation, and advanced oxidations processes. The excellent performance of COFs towards adsorption and membrane filtration has been centered to their higher crystallinity and porosity, exhibiting exceptionally high surface area, pore size and pore volumes. Thus, they provide more active sites for trapping the dye molecules. On one hand, the photocatalytic performance of the COFs was attributed to their semiconducting properties, and when coupled with other functional semiconducting materials, they achieve good mechanical and thermal stabilities, positive light response, and narrow band gap, a typical characteristic of excellent photocatalysts. As such, COFs and their composites have demonstrated excellent potentialities for the elimination of the dyes.

Efficiency and selectivity of cost-effective Zn-MOF for dye removal, kinetic and thermodynamic approach

Green synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted a lot of attention as a crucial step for practical industrial applications. In this work, green synthesis of zinc(II) metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) has been carried out at room temperature. The Zn metal (node) was extracted from spent domestic batteries, and the linker was benzene di-carboxylic acid (BDC). The characterization of the as-prepared Zn-MOF was accomplished by PXRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, TGA, and nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. All the characterization techniques strongly supported that as-synthesized Zn-MOF using metallic solid waste Zn is similar to that was reported in the literature. The as-prepared Zn-MOF was stable in water for 24 h without any changes in its functional groups and framework. The prepared Zn-MOF was tested for the adsorption of three dyes, two anionic dyes, aniline blue (AB), and orange II (O(II)) as well as methylene blue (MB), an example of cationic dye from aqueous solution. AB has the highest equilibrium adsorbed amount, qe, of value 55.34 mg g-1 at pH = 7 and 25 °C within 40 min. Investigation of the adsorption kinetics indicated that these adsorption processes could be described as a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the adsorption process of the three dyes was described well by the Freundlich isotherm model. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption of AB on the prepared Zn-MOF was an endothermic and spontaneous process. In contrast, it was non-spontaneous and exothermic for the uptake of O(II) and MB. This study complements the business case development model of "solid waste to value-added MOFs."

Antibacterial Cu or Zn-MOFs Based on the 1,3,5-Tris-(styryl)benzene Tricarboxylate

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly versatile materials. Here, two novel MOFs, branded as IEF-23 and IEF-24 and based on an antibacterial tricarboxylate linker and zinc or copper cations, and holding antibacterial properties, are presented. The materials were synthesized by the solvothermal route and fully characterized. The antibacterial activity of IEF-23 and IEF-24 was investigated against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli via the agar diffusion method. These bacteria are some of the most broadly propagated pathogens and are more prone to the development of antibacterial resistance. As such, they represent an archetype to evaluate the efficiency of novel antibacterial treatments. MOFs were active against both strains, exhibiting higher activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Thus, the potential of the developed MOFs as antibacterial agents was proved.

Application of a Mixed-Ligand Metal-Organic Framework in Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction, Antibacterial Activity and Dye Adsorption

In this paper, a known mixed-ligand MOF {[Co₂(TZMB)₂(1,4-bib)_0.5(H₂O)₂]·(H₂O)₂}_n (compound 1) was reproduced, and its potential application potential was explored. It was found that compound 1 had high photocatalytic activity for CO₂ reduction. After 12 h of illumination, the formation rate of CO, which is the product of CO₂ reduction by compound 1, reached 3012.5 μmol/g/h. At the same time, compound 1 has a good antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Candida albicans (C. albicans), which has potential research value in the medical field. In addition, compound 1 can effectively remove Congo Red from aqueous solutions and achieve the separation of Congo red from mixed dye solutions.

π-Electron-Extended Triazine-Based Covalent Organic Framework as Photocatalyst for Organic Pollution Degradation and H2 Production from Water

Herein, we report the efficient preparation of π-electron-extended triazine-based covalent organic framework (TFP-TPTPh COF) for photocatalysis and adsorption of the rhodamine B (RhB) dye molecule, as well as for photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water. The resultant TFP-TPTPh COF exhibited remarkable porosity, excellent crystallinity, high surface area of 724 m2 g−1, and massive thermal stability with a char yield of 63.41%. The TFP-TPTPh COF demonstrated an excellent removal efficiency of RhB from water in 60 min when used as an adsorbent, and its maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 480 mg g−1 is among the highest Qm values for porous polymers ever to be recorded. In addition, the TFP-TPTPh COF showed a remarkable photocatalytic degradation of RhB dye molecules with a reaction rate constant of 4.1 × 10−2 min−1 and an efficiency of 97.02% under ultraviolet–visible light irradiation. Furthermore, without additional co-catalysts, the TFP-TPTPh COF displayed an excellent photocatalytic capacity for reducing water to generate H2 with a hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 2712 μmol g−1 h−1. This highly active COF-based photocatalyst appears to be a useful material for dye removal from water, as well as solar energy processing and conversion.

A bifunctionalised Pb-based MOF for iodine capture and dye removal

A 2-dimensional Pb(II) metal-organic framework, [Pb(bdc)_0.5(py-Phen)NO₃]_n (SM-3), was synthesized under solvothermal conditions using a mixed ligand approach. SM-3 was assembled using dinuclear SBUs [Pb₂(COO)₂]^2-, an oxygen donor H₂bdc = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid, and nitrogen donor py-Phen = pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]-phenanthroline linkers. SM-3 was characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, powder-X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, SEM, EDS, TEM, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Crystallographic studies confirmed that SM-3 displays a 2D layered structure with unique anagostic (Pb⋯H) interactions. Interestingly, the presence of abundant π-electron-rich rings embellished with free -N donor sites in the framework makes SM-3 an excellent adsorbent that exhibits adsorption performance for iodine and dyes. The experimental results show that SM-3 reversibly adsorbs radioactive iodine in the solution and vapor phases and exhibits selective adsorption performance for hazardous cationic dyes, namely, methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine-B (Rh-B), from aqueous solution. Moreover, the possible mechanism of iodine and dye adsorption was also discussed in detail. Thus, this work is remarkable for coordination chemists to engineer layered MOFs for adsorption purposes and expands their potential characteristics by converting them into 2D MOF nanosheets to further enhance the adsorption of hazardous pollutants for environment protection.

Recyclable Magnetic Iron Immobilized onto Chitosan with Bridging Cu Ion for the Enhanced Adsorption of Methyl Orange

Chitosan (CS) is a natural and low-cost adsorbent for capturing metal ions and organic compounds. However, the high solubility of CS in acidic solution would make it difficult to recycle the adsorbent from the liquid phase. In this study, the CS/Fe₃O₄ was prepared via Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles immobilized onto a CS surface, and the DCS/Fe₃O₄-Cu was further fabricated after surface modification and the adsorption of Cu ions. The meticulously tailored material displayed the sub-micron size of an agglomerated structure with numerous magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. During the adsorption of methyl orange (MO), the DCS/Fe₃O₄-Cu delivered a superior removal efficiency of 96.4% at 40 min, which is more than twice the removal efficiency of 38.7% for pristine CS/Fe₃O₄. At an initial MO concentration of 100 mg L^-1, the DCS/Fe₃O₄-Cu exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity of 144.60 mg g^-1. The experimental data were well explained by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, suggesting the dominant monolayer adsorption. The composite adsorbent still maintained a large removal rate of 93.5% after five regeneration cycles. This work develops an effective strategy to simultaneously achieve high adsorption performance and convenient recyclability for wastewater treatment.

Acid catalyzed one-pot approach towards the synthesis of curcuminoid systems: unsymmetrical diarylidene cycloalkanones, exploration of their single crystals, optical and nonlinear optical properties

In the present study crystalline unsymmetrical diarylidene ketone derivatives BNTP and BDBC have been prepared by two sequential acid catalyzed aldol condensation reactions in a one pot manner. The crystal structures of both compounds were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis which revealed the presence of H-bonding interactions of type C-H⋯O, along with weak C-H⋯π and weak π⋯π stacking interactions that are involved in the crystal stabilization of both organic compounds. Hirshfeld surface analysis is carried out for the broad investigation of the intermolecular interactions in both compounds. The quantum chemical investigation was performed on the optimized molecular geometries of BNTP and BDBC to calculate optical and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The density functional theory (DFT) study showed that the third-order NLO polarizabilities of compounds BNTP and BDBC are found to be 226.45 × 10^-36 esu and 238.72 × 10^-36 esu, respectively, which indicates noticeable good NLO response properties. Additionally, the BNTP and BDBC molecules also showed the HOMO-LUMO orbital gaps of 5.96 eV and 6.06 eV, respectively. Furthermore, the computation of UV-visible spectra of the titled compounds indicated a limited and/or no absorption above the 400 nm region, directing a good transparency and NLO property trade-off for both synthesized compounds that may play a significant contribution in the future for optoelectronic technologies.

Synthesis of 3D Cadmium(II)-Carboxylate Framework Having Potential for Co-Catalyst Free CO2 Fixation to Cyclic Carbonates

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous coordination polymers with interesting structural frameworks, properties, and a wide range of applications. A novel 3D cadmium(II)-carboxylate framework, CdMOF ([Cd2(L)(DMF)(H2O)2]n), was synthesized by the solvothermal method using a tetracarboxylic bridging linker having amide functional moieties. The CdMOF crystal structure exists in the form of a 3D layer structure. Based on the single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, the supramolecular assembly of CdMOF is explored by Hirshfeld surface analysis. The voids and cavities analysis is performed to check the strength of the crystal packing in CdMOF. The CdMOF followed a multistage thermal degradation pattern in which the solvent molecules escaped around 200 °C and the structural framework remained stable till 230 °C. The main structural framework collapsed (>60 wt.%) into organic volatiles between 400–550 °C. The SEM morphology analyses revealed uniform wedge-shaped rectangular blocks with dimensions of 25–100 μm. The catalytic activity of CdMOF for the solvent and cocatalyst-free cycloaddition of CO2 into epichlorohydrin was successful with 100% selectivity. The current results revealed that this 3D CdMOF is more active than the previously reported CdMOFs and, more interestingly, without using a co-catalyst. The catalyst was easily recovered and reused, having the same performance.

Exploring Highly Functionalized Tetrahydropyridine as a Dual Inhibitor of Monoamine Oxidase A and B: Synthesis, Structural Analysis, Single Crystal XRD, Supramolecular Assembly Exploration by Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, and Computational Studies

Ethyl 4-(4-fluorophenylamino)-2,6-bis(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-1-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylate (FTEAA) has been synthesized efficiently in an iodine-catalyzed five-component reaction of 4-fluoroaniline, 4-trifluoromethyl benzaldehyde, and ethyl acetoacetate in methanol at 55 °C for 12 h. Various spectro-analytical techniques such as ¹H and ¹³C NMR and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy have validated the structure of FTEAA. Further confirmation of the structure of FTEAA has been established on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The supramolecular assembly of FTEAA in terms of strong and comparatively weak noncovalent interactions is fully investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis, the interaction energy between pairs of molecules, and energy frameworks. The void analysis is conducted to explore the strength and stability of the crystal structure. Furthermore, molecular docking analysis was computationally performed to see the potential intermolecular interactions between the selected proteins and FTEAA. The binding interaction energies are found to be -8.8 and -9.6 kcal/mol for the proteins MAO-B (PDB ID: 2V5Z) and MAO-A (PDB ID: 2Z5X), respectively. These reasonably good binding energies (more negative values) indicate the efficient associations between the FTEAA and target proteins. The proteins and FTEAA were also analyzed for intermolecular interactions. FTEAA and proteins interact in a variety of ways, like conventional hydrogen bonds, carbon-hydrogen bonds, alkyl, π-alkyl, and halide interactions.

Recent advances in the tuning of the organic framework materials - The selections of ligands, reaction conditions, and post-synthesis approaches

Organic framework materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), graphene-organic frameworks (GOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have led to the revolution across fields including catalysts, sensors, gas capture, and biology mainly owing to their ultra-high surface area-to-volume ratio, on-demand tunable crystal structures, and unique surface properties. While the wet chemistry routes have been the predominant synthesis approach, the crystal phase, morphological parameters, and physicochemical properties of organic framework materials are largely affected by various synthesis parameters and precursors. In this work, we specifically review the influences of synthesis parameters towards crystal structures and chemical compositions of organic framework materials, including selected ligand types and lengths, reaction temperature/solvent/reactant compositions, as well as post-synthesis modification approaches. More importantly, the subsequent impacts on the general electronic, mechanical, surface chemical, and thermal properties as well as the consequent variation in performances towards catalytic, desalination, gas sensing, and gas storage applications are critically discussed. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of organic framework materials are provided.

Shedding Light on the Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Characterization, and Computational Study of Optoelectronic Properties and Bioactivity of Imine derivatives

Two imine compounds named as (E)-2-(((3,4-dichlorophenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (DC2H) and (E)-4-(((2,4-dimethylphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (DM4H) are synthesized, and their crystal structures are verified using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The crystal structures of the compounds are compared with the closely related crystal structures using the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). The crystal packing in terms of intermolecular interactions is fully explored by Hirshfeld surface analysis. Void analysis is carried out for both compounds to check the strength of the crystal packing. Furthermore, a state-of-the-art dual computational technique consisting of quantum chemical and molecular docking methods is used to shed light on the molecular structure, optoelectronic properties, and bioactivity of indigenously synthesized compounds. The optimized molecular geometries are compared with their counterpart experimental values. Based on previous reports of biofunctions of the indigenously synthesized imine derivatives, they are explored for their potential inhibition properties against two very crucial proteins (main protease (M^pro) and nonstructural protein 9 (NSP9)) of SARS-CoV-2. The calculated interaction energy values of DC2H and DM4H with M^pro are found to be -6.3 and -6.6 kcal/mol, respectively, and for NSP9, the calculated interaction energy value is found to be -6.5 kcal/mol. We believe that the current combined study through experiments and computational techniques will not only pique the interest of the broad scientific community but also evoke interest in their further in vitro and in vivo investigations.

Single-Crystal Investigation, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, and DFT Study of Third-Order NLO Properties of Unsymmetrical Acyl Thiourea Derivatives

In the current research work, unsymmetrical acyl thiourea derivatives, 4-((3-benzoylthioureido)methyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid (BTCC) and methyl 2-(3-benzoylthioureido)benzoate (MBTB), have been synthesized efficiently. The structures of these crystalline thioureas were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal diffractional analysis. The crystallographic investigation showed that the molecular configuration of both compounds is stabilized by intramolecular N-H···O bonding. The crystal packing of BTCC is stabilized by strong N-H···O bonding and comparatively weak O-H···S, C-H···O, C-H···π, and C-O···π interactions, whereas strong N-H···O bonding and comparatively weak C-H···O, C-H···S, and C-H···π interactions are responsible for the crystal packing of MBTB. The noncovalent interactions that are responsible for the crystal packing are explored by the Hirshfeld surface analysis for both compounds. The void analysis is performed to find the quantitative strength of crystal packing in both compounds. Additionally, state-of-the-art applied quantum chemical techniques are used to further explore the structure-property relationship in the above-entitled molecules. The optimization of molecular geometries showed a reasonably good correlation with their respective experimental structures. Third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) polarizability calculations were performed to see the advanced functional application of entitled compounds as efficient NLO materials. The average static γ amplitudes are found to be 27.30 × 10^-36 and 102.91 × 10^-36 esu for the compounds BTCC and MBTB, respectively. The γ amplitude of MBTB is calculated to be 3.77 times larger, which is probably due to better charge-transfer characteristics in MBTB. The quantum chemical analysis in the form of 3-D plots was also performed for their frontier molecular orbitals and molecular electrostatic potentials for understanding charge-transfer characteristics. We believe that the current investigation will not only report the new BTCC and MBTB compounds but also evoke the interest of the materials science community in their potential use in NLO applications.

A novel 3D terbium metal-organic framework as a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst for the cyanosilylation of aldehyde

A novel 3D lanthanide(iii) metal-organic framework (MOF) (namely Tb-MOF), was synthesized by self-assembly from Tb(iii) ion nitrate and the rigid organic ligand H₂sbdc (H₂sbdc = 5,5-dioxo-5H-dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-3,7-dicarboxylic acid), and could work as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes at room temperature. The obtained Tb-MOF has been characterized and analysed in detail by single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and so on. The pores of Tb-MOF provided a microenvironment that was beneficial for the substrates to be close to the Lewis acid catalytic sites. The IR spectrogram and the fluorescence titration proved that the substrates could be activated inside the channel of Tb-MOF. The heterogeneous Tb-MOF catalyst with fine catalytic efficiency exhibited a high TON (TON = 460), and could be recycled at least three times without significantly reducing its activity.
